This paper studies a multiple-input–single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) featuring simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, where a multiantenna access point (AP) delivers both information and energy via radio signals to multiple single-antenna receivers simultaneously, and each receiver implements either information decoding (ID) or energy harvesting (EH). In particular, pseudorandom sequences that are a priori known and therefore can be cancelled at each ID receiver are used as the energy signals, and the information-theoretically optimal dirty paper coding is employed for the information transmission. We characterize the capacity region for ID receivers by solving a sequence of weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization (WSRMax) problems subject to a maximum sum-power constraint for the AP, and a set of minimum harvested power constraints for individual EH receivers. The problem corresponds to a new form of WSRMax problem in MISO-BC with combined maximum and minimum linear transmit covariance constraints (MaxLTCCs and MinLTCCs), which differs from the celebrated capacity region characterization problem for MISO-BC under a set of MaxLTCCs only and is challenging to solve. By extending the general BC–multiple-access-channel duality, which is only applicable to WSRMax problems with MaxLTCCs, and applying the ellipsoid method, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to solve this problem globally optimally. Furthermore, we also propose two suboptimal algorithms with lower complexity by assuming that the information and energy signals are designed separately. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) aided positioning technologies have been recently recognized as promising solutions to fulfil the high accuracy requirement of indoor localization systems. In this paper, exploiting a distributed M-MIMO framework, we propose to employ a deep belief network (DBN) to analyze the received signal strengths (RSS) generated by a diffraction model, where the impact from interfering persons on the targeted user equipment (UE) is considered. Next, the preliminary DBN estimates are forwarded to a long-short term memory network (LSTMN), where the trajectory information of the targeted UE can be extracted based on much less historical trajectory information than existing solutions. Then, the three-dimension (3D) coordinates of the UE’s positions can be estimated with a back propagation neural network (BPNN) which combines the outputs of DBN and LSTMN. Due to their ability to create favorable line-of-sight (LoS) propagation environments, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are regarded as promising enablers for future millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless communication. In this paper, we investigate channel estimation for IRS-assisted mm-wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. By leveraging the sparsity of mm-wave channels in the angular domain, we formulate the channel estimation problem as an $\ell _{1}$ -norm regularized optimization problem with fixed-rank constraints. To tackle the non-convexity of the formulated problem, an efficient algorithm is proposed by capitalizing on alternating minimization and manifold optimization (MO), which yields a locally optimal solution. To further reduce the computational complexity of the estimation algorithm, we propose a compressive sensing- (CS-) based channel estimation approach. In particular, a three-stage estimation protocol is put forward where the subproblem in each stage can be solved via low-complexity CS methods. Furthermore, based on the acquired channel state information (CSI) of the cascaded channel, we design a passive beamforming algorithm for maximization of the spectral efficiency. Simulation results reveal that the proposed MO-based estimation (MO-EST) and beamforming algorithms significantly outperform two benchmark schemes while the CS-based estimation (CS-EST) algorithm strikes a balance between performance and complexity. The incorporation of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) into wireless communication systems can extend the coverage and enhance the data transmission rate. This paper studies the joint transceiver and IRS designs in IRS-assisted multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems under both perfect channel state information (CSI) and imperfect CSI. Specifically, the transmit precoder, reflection coefficients at the IRS, and receive equalizer are jointly optimized to minimize the data detection mean square error (MSE), subject to the transmission power constraint and the modulus constraints for IRS reflection coefficients. The design problems, non-convex and challenging, are tackled under the framework of alternating optimization. For the design with perfect CSI, we successively optimize the IRS reflection coefficients given the precoder and present the closed-form optimal angle of one reflection coefficient given the others. For the robust design with imperfect CSI, we first average the detection MSE over channel uncertainties by using a generalized statistical CSI error model. Then, the averaged MSE is approximated by a more tractable upper bound. Subsequently, the robust design problem is elaborately transformed into a form similar to the problem with perfect CSI. Cloud-based cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) technology, which exploits a large number of distributed antennas to cooperatively serve multiple users, constitutes an appealing technique for B5G/6G wireless communications. However, the distributed nature of cloud-based CFmMIMO imposes great challenges in analyzing the error probability bounds, and very few efforts have so far been paid to optimize the detector design. In this paper, we try to add a stroke to this blank by analyzing the symbol error rate (SER) and design near-optimal detection algorithms. Specifically, considering non-identical large-scale coefficients and channel estimation errors, we first leverage the pairwise error probability to derive an asymptotic SER bound for uplink cloud-based CFmMIMO systems, which is verified by simulation results. Furthermore, motivated by the concepts of successive interference cancellation (SIC) and error correction mechanism (ECM), we design two distinct types of near-optimal detectors for cloud-based CFmMIMO systems and analyze their complexity and convergence performance. Finally, extensive simulation results show that our proposed SIC and ECM based detectors outperform conventional matched filtering (MF) and minimum mean squred error (MMSE) counterparts. In particular, the MMSE-SIC and MMSE-ECM detectors approach the derived asymptotic bound, and the MF-ECM detector strikes a balance between the SER and complexity in ultra CFmMIMO scenarios. The use of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology has enabled increased efficiency and capacity of wireless communication systems. When the downlink channel to user terminals (UTs) is known at the base station (BS), the BS can precode transmission to simplify detection at the UTs. In frequency division duplexed (FDD) systems, obtaining CSI at the transmitter to fully exploit the advantages of massive MIMO is complicated, since the number of channel coefficients to be trained and fed back from the UT is very large. This is exacerbated in the case where the channel is time varying, where frequent retraining and feedback is required. However, if the channel coefficients are spatially correlated, the amount of feedback required can be reduced significantly. In this paper, we consider the case where the channel coefficients from the BS to the UTs are spatially correlated, and show that efficient allocation of training power based on eigenvalues of the channel correlation matrix significantly boosts achievable rates. Further, we show that using Kalman filters to track the evolving channel coefficients reduces the need to retrain channels, and the reduced training requirement translates to higher data rates. Channel estimation is challenging for the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communications. Since the number of coefficients of the cascaded channel among the base station (BS), the RIS, and the user equipment (UE), is the product of the number of BS antennas, the number of RIS elements, and the number of UEs, the pilot overhead can be prohibitively high. In this paper, we propose a two-timescale channel estimation framework to exploit the property that the BS-RIS channel is high-dimensional but quasi-static, while the RIS-UE channel is mobile but low-dimensional. Specifically, to estimate the quasi-static BS-RIS channel, we propose a dual-link pilot transmission scheme, where the BS transmits downlink pilots and receives uplink pilots reflected by the RIS. Then, we propose a coordinate descent-based algorithm to recover the BS-RIS channel. Since the quasi-static BS-RIS channel is estimated less frequently than the mobile channel is, the average pilot overhead can be reduced from a long-term perspective. Although the mobile RIS-UE channel has to be frequently estimated in a small timescale, the associated pilot overhead is low thanks to its low dimension. The Terahertz band is envisioned to meet the demanding 100 Gbps data rates for 6G wireless communications. Aiming at combating the distance limitation problem with low hardware-cost, ultra-massive MIMO with hybrid beamforming is promising. However, relationships among wavelength, array size and antenna spacing give rise to the inaccuracy of planar-wave channel model (PWM), while an enlarged channel matrix dimension leads to excessive parameters of applying spherical-wave channel model (SWM). Moreover, due to the adoption of hybrid beamforming, channel estimation (CE) needs to recover high-dimensional channels from severely compressed channel observation. In this paper, a hybrid spherical- and planar-wave channel model (HSPM) is investigated and proved to be accurate and efficient by adopting PWM within subarray and SWM among subarrays. Furthermore, a two-phase HSPM CE mechanism is developed. A deep convolutional-neural-network (DCNN) is designed in the first phase for parameter estimation of reference subarrays, while geometric relationships of the remaining channel parameters between reference subarrays are leveraged to complete CE in the second phase. Extensive numerical results demonstrate the HSPM is accurate at various communication distances, array sizes and carrier frequencies. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks due to their fast and low-power configuration, which has increased potential in enabling massive connectivity and low-latency communications. Accurate and low-overhead channel estimation in RIS-based systems is one of the most critical challenges due to the usually large number of RIS unit elements and their distinctive hardware constraints. In this paper, we focus on the uplink of a RIS-empowered multi-user Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) uplink communication systems and propose a channel estimation framework based on the parallel factor decomposition to unfold the resulting cascaded channel model. We present two iterative estimation algorithms for the channels between the base station and RIS, as well as the channels between RIS and users. One is based on alternating least squares (ALS), while the other uses vector approximate message passing to iteratively reconstruct two unknown channels from the estimated vectors. To theoretically assess the performance of the ALS-based algorithm, we derived its estimation Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB). We also discuss the downlink achievable sum rate computation with estimated channels and different precoding schemes for the base station. Our extensive simulation results show that our algorithms outperform benchmark schemes and that the ALS technique achieves the CRB. It is also demonstrated that the sum rate using the estimated channels always reach that of perfect channels under various settings, thus, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed estimation algorithms. Large intelligent surfaces (LISs) constitute a new and promising wireless communication paradigm that relies on the integration of a massive number of antenna elements over the entire surfaces of man-made structures. The LIS concept provides many advantages, such as the capability to provide reliable and space-intensive communications by effectively establishing line-of-sight (LOS) channels. In this paper, the system spectral efficiency (SSE) of an active LIS system is asymptotically analyzed under a practical LIS environment with a well-defined uplink frame structure. In order to verify the impact on the SSE of pilot contamination, the SSE of a multi-LIS system is asymptotically studied and a theoretical bound on its performance is derived. Given this performance bound, an optimal pilot training length for multi-LIS systems subjected to pilot contamination is characterized and, subsequently, the number of devices that need to be serviced by the LIS in order to maximize the performance is derived. Simulation results show that the derived analyses are in close agreement with the exact mutual information in presence of a large number of antennas, and the achievable SSE is limited by the effect of pilot contamination and intra/inter-LIS interference through the LOS path, even if the LIS is equipped with an infinite number of antennas. Additionally, the SSE obtained with the proposed pilot training length and number of scheduled devices is shown to reach the one obtained via a brute-force search for the optimal solution. The universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) modulation is among the most considered solutions for the realization of beyond orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) air interfaces for future wireless networks. This paper focuses on the design and analysis of a UFMC transceiver equipped with multiple antennas and operating at millimeter-wave carrier frequencies. This paper provides the full mathematical model of an MIMO-UFMC transceiver, taking into account the presence of hybrid analog/digital beamformers at both ends of the communication links. Then, several detection structures are proposed, both for the case of single-packet isolated transmission and for the case of multiple-packet continuous transmission. In the latter situation, this paper also considers the case in which no guard time among adjacent packets is inserted, trading off an increased level of interference with higher values of spectral efficiency. At the analysis stage, several considered detection structures and transmission schemes are compared in terms of bit-error rate, root-mean-square error, and system throughput. The numerical results show that the proposed transceiver algorithms are effective and that the linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) data detector is capable of well managing the increased interference brought by the removal of guard times among consecutive packets, thus yielding throughput gains of about 10%–13%. The effect of phase noise at the receiver is also numerically assessed, and it is shown that the recursive implementation of the linear MMSE exhibits some degree of robustness against this disturbance. This paper provides an analytical performance characterization of both the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) user-centric network multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where a cooperating base station (BS) cluster is formed for each user individually and the clusters for different users may overlap. In this model, cooperating BSs (each equipped with multiple antennas) jointly perform zero-forcing beamforming to the set of single-antenna users associated with them. As compared with a baseline network MIMO system with disjoint BS clusters, the effect of user-centric clustering is that it improves signal strength in both the UL and DL, while reducing cluster-edge interference in the DL. This paper quantifies these effects by assuming that BSs and users form Poisson point processes and by further approximating both the signal and interference powers using Gamma distributions of appropriate parameters. We show that BS cooperation provides significant gain as compared to single-cell processing for both the UL and DL, but the advantage of user-centric clustering over the baseline disjoint clustering system is significant for the DL cluster-edge users only. Although the analytic results are derived with the assumption of perfect channel state information and infinite backhaul between the cooperating BSs, they nevertheless provide architectural insight into the design of the future cooperative cellular networks. In this paper, a comprehensive design and analysis of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex (FD) relaying systems in a multi-cell environment is investigated, where a multi-antenna amplify-and-forward FD relay station serves multiple half-duplex (HD) multi-antenna users. The pivotal obstacles of loopback self-interference (LI) and multiple co-channel interferers (CCI) at the relay and destination when employing FD relaying in cellular networks are addressed. In contrast to the HD relaying mode, the CCI in the FD relaying mode is predicted to double since the uplink and downlink communications are simultaneously scheduled via the same channel. In this paper, the optimal layout of transmit (receive) precoding (decoding) weight vectors which maximizes the overall signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is constructed by a suitable optimization problem, and then a closed-form sub-optimal formula based on null space projection is presented. The proposed hop-by-hop rank-1 zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming vectors are based on added ZF constraints used to suppress the LI and CCI channels at the relay and destination, i.e., the source and relay perform transmit ZF beamforming, while the relay and destination employ receive ZF combining. To this end, unified accurate expressions for the outage probability and ergodic capacity are derived in closed form. In addition, simpler tight lower bound formulas for the outage probability and ergodic capacity are presented. Moreover, the asymptotic approximations for outage probability are considered to gain insights into system behavior in terms of the diversity order and array gain. Numerical and simulation results show the accuracy of the presented exact analytical expressions and the tightness of the lower bound expressions. The case of hop-by-hop maximum-ratio transmission/maximal-ratio combining beamforming is included for comparison purposes. Furthermore, our results show that while multi-antenna terminals improve the system performance, the detrimental effect of CCI on FD relaying is clearly seen. This paper addresses point-to-point communication over block-fading channels with independent fading blocks. When both channel state information at the transmitter and receiver (CSIR) are available, most achievable schemes use separable coding, i.e., coding independently and in parallel over different fading states. Unfortunately, separable coding has drawbacks, including large memory requirements at both communication ends. In this paper, a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed that achieves the ergodic capacity without separable coding, with lattice codebooks and decoding decision regions that are universal across channel realizations. We first demonstrate this result for fading distributions with discrete, finite support whose sequences are robustly typical. Results are then extended to continuous fading distributions, as well as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In addition, a variant of the proposed scheme is presented for the MIMO ergodic fading channel with CSIR only, where we prove the existence of a universal codebook that achieves rates within a constant gap to capacity for finite-support fading distributions. The integration of local device-to-device (D2D) communications and cellular connections has been intensively studied to satisfy co-existing D2D and cellular communication demand. In future cellular networks, there will be numerous standby users possessing D2D communication capabilities in close proximity to each other. Considering that these standby users do not necessarily request D2D communications all the time, in this paper we propose a hybrid D2D-cellular scheme to make use of these standby users and to improve the rate performance for cellular users. More specifically, through D2D links, a virtual antenna array can be formed by sharing antennas across different terminals to realize the diversity gain of MIMO channels. This paper considers the use of millimeter wave links to enable high data rate D2D communications. We then design an orthogonal D2D multiple access protocol and formulate the optimization problem of joint cellular and D2D resource allocation for downlink transmissions using the proposed scheme. We obtain a closed-form solution for D2D resource allocation, which reveals useful insights for practical system design. Hardware calibration is essential to restore the uplink/downlink channel reciprocity for multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in a time division duplexing mode. Unfortunately, due to the associated overhead, calibration cannot be performed frequently; furthermore, any calibration procedure leaves behind a residual mismatch between the uplink and downlink channels. In this paper, we study the effects of these calibration errors on the achievable rates in the downlink of a multi-cell, multi-user, and distributed massive MIMO system. Specifically, we develop accurate, yet simple, lower-bounds on the per-user achievable rate, assuming either zero-forcing (ZF) or matched filtering (MF) are used. We also introduce a performance loss coefficient as a measure of sensitivity of the performance to the calibration errors. Using this measure, we identify the conditions under which ZF precoding is more sensitive to calibration errors than MF. Finally, we consider the robust weighted sum-rate maximization problem to mitigate the degrading effects of non-ideal calibration. Our numerical experiments show that the rate lower-bounds developed in this paper accurately quantify the impacts of non-ideal calibration on performance. Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) technologies play an important role in modern and future wireless communication systems as they can improve the capacity without increasing the bandwidth. MIMO detection is one of the key technologies for MIMO system designs. MIMO detection schemes based on Message Passing (MP) algorithms have attracted extensive attention in recent years. The MIMO detection scheme based on Expectation Propagation (EP), which is also a kind of MP algorithms, has been proved to achieve the Bayes-optimal performance under the conditions of large system limit and compression rate threshold. However, there is improvement space for the detection performance of the EP algorithm when the conditions are not satisfied, which are the common cases in the practical applications. In this paper, when the conditions of the large system limit and compression rate threshold are not satisfied, we analyze the influences of two factors, the initial parameters selection and the moment matching strategy, on the performance of EP based detection scheme. As a result, we propose an improved EP detection scheme based on optimizing the two factors. In this paper, we consider a wireless communication system, where a full-duplex hybrid access point (HAP) transmits to a set of cellular users (CUs) in the downlink channel, while receiving data from a set of energy-constrained communication devices like user equipments (UEs) in the uplink channel. The HAP has a massive antenna array, while all CUs and UEs nodes are equipped with single antenna each. Time switching protocol is adopted, where channel estimation, wireless power transfer, and information transfer between UEs, CUs and full-duplex HAP are performed in two phases. By adopting maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) and zero-forcing (ZF) processing at the HAP, the uplink and downlink achievable rate expressions in the large-antenna limit and approximate results that hold for any finite number of antennas are derived. Moreover, the optimum energy beamformer and time-split parameter at the HAP are found to maximize the downlink sum-rate under a constraint on uplink sum-rate. Our findings reveal that our proposed energy beamforming with ZF and MRC/MRT processing for information transfer achieves up to 47% and 14% average sum rate gains as compared with the suboptimum energy beamformer, respectively. It is known that superposition signaling in Gaussian interference networks is capable of improving the achievable rate region. However, the problem of maximizing the rate gain offered by superposition signaling is computationally prohibitive, even in the simplest case of two-user single-input single-output interference networks. This paper examines superposition signaling for the general multiple-input multiple-output broadcast Gaussian interference networks. The problem of maximizing either the sum rate or the minimal user’s rate under superposition signaling and dirty paper coding is solved by a computationally efficient path-following procedure, which requires only a convex quadratic program for each iteration but ensures convergence at least to a locally optimal solution. This paper investigates nonlinear transceiver design for full-duplex multiple-input multiple-output (FD-MIMO) relay systems. A dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying protocol is considered. At the destination, nonlinear successive-interference-cancellation (SIC) is used for signal detection. The goal is to find the source and relay precoders such that the symbol-vector error rate (SVER) can be minimized. Due to the loop interference (LI), optimizing the relay precoder in FD systems is much more involved. In this paper, we propose novel designs to solve this problem. Starting from the QR-SIC receiver, we theoretically show that the relay precoder can be solved with a closed-form expression even when the system incurs LI. Then, we consider the system with a minimum mean-squared-error SIC receiver, where the relay precoder design entails a different problem formulation and introduces new challenges. We propose a novel iterative method, with closed-form solutions in each iteration, to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid user pairing (HUP) scheme in multiuser multiple-input single-output non-orthogonal multiple access networks with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. In this system, two information users with distinct channel conditions are optimally paired while energy users perform energy harvesting (EH) under non-linearity of the EH circuits. We consider the problem of jointly optimizing user pairing and power allocation to maximize the overall spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) subject to user-specific quality-of-service and harvested power requirements. A new paradigm for the EE-EH trade-off is then proposed to achieve a good balance of network power consumption. Such design problems are formulated as the maximization of non-concave functions subject to the class of mixed-integer non-convex constraints, which are very challenging to solve optimally. To address these challenges, we first relax binary pairing variables to be continuous and transform the design problems into equivalent non-convex ones, but with more tractable forms. We then develop low-complexity iterative algorithms to improve the objectives and converge to a local optimum by means of the inner approximation framework. Simulation results show the convergence of proposed algorithms and the SE and EE improvements of the proposed HUP scheme over state-of-the-art designs. In addition, the effects of key parameters such as the number of antennas and dynamic power at the BS, target data rates, and energy threshold, on the system performance are evaluated to show the effectiveness of the proposed schemes in balancing resource utilization. Providing higher data rate is a momentous goal for wireless communications systems, while interference is an important obstacle to reach this purpose. To cope with this problem, interference alignment (IA) has been proposed. In this paper, we propose two rank minimization methods to enhance the performance of IA in the presence of uncoordinated interference, i.e., interference that cannot be properly aligned with the rest of the network and thus is a crucial issue. In this scenario, perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) cases are considered. Our proposed approaches employ the $l_{2}$ and the Schatten- $p$ norms to approximate the rank function, due to its non-convexity. Also, we propose a new convex relaxation to expand the feasible set of our optimization problem, providing lower rank solutions compared to other IA methods from the literature. In addition, we propose a modified weighted-sum method to deal with interference in the relay-aided MIMO interference channel, which employs a set of weighting parameters in order to find more solutions. This paper investigates the secrecy performance of multiple-input multiple-output systems under generalized $\alpha -\mu $ fading conditions. To this end, we focus on two distinct scenarios: 1) the transmitter has knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) of the eavesdropper channel and 2) the transmitter is not aware of the CSI of the wiretap link. By considering transmit antenna selection in the underlying system, we develop closed-form analytical expressions for the lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the probability of the strictly positive secrecy capacity. Furthermore, two novel approaches are proposed to derive an analytical expression of the average secrecy capacity (ASC). First, the ASC is expressed as a function of the average capacity of the desired link and an interaction term regarded as the ASC loss. Second, the ASC is expressed in terms of the average capacities of the desired and eavesdropper links, plus an interaction term that can be regarded as some sort of ASC gain due to the statistical independence between the desired and eavesdropper links. In this paper, imperfect feedback-based linear precoding schemes are proposed for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems, where input symbol streams are encoded by using generalized-orthogonal space-time block codes. The imperfect feedback information drastically degrades the system performance. Therefore, to overcome the effect of erroneous feedback information, error-tolerant weighting (ETW) schemes are implemented by employing diagonal precoder. The communication links are assumed to be Nakagami- $m$ distributed for accurately characterizing practical wireless channels under different fading scenarios. Exact and asymptotic symbol-error-rate (SER) expressions of the considered MIMO system are derived under imperfect feedback with the help of order statistics. The most appropriate values of the transmit weights of the precoder matrix are obtained by minimizing the derived average SER over fixed and adaptive signal-to-noise ratio. Further, we study the trade-off between the proposed optimal and suboptimal feedback-based precoding schemes. Moreover, the ergodic-rate of the ETW schemes is also derived with imperfect feedback for arbitrary MIMO system by using the moment generating function approach. The simulated and analytical results show that a significant performance gain is achieved by the ETW schemes as compared to the uniform power allocation and existing precoding techniques under erroneous feedback information. In wireless communication systems, channel state feedback (CSF) is widely used to improve link performance. However, CSF consumes extra system resources and results in transmission overhead. In this paper, we evaluate such resource consumption in terms of bit rate and provide an explicit expression for the lower bound of the CSF overhead. We propose an overhead optimization mechanism under the constraint of channel state reconstruction accuracy. The numerical simulations show that our paper is beneficial to select the optimum CSF parameters, including the average bit number and channel state feedback period. Multi-channel (MC) optical wireless communication (OWC) systems employing wave-division multiplexing for outdoors free-space optical communications, or multi-user time-division multiple access for indoors visible-light communications, e.g., can be modeled as parallel channels. Multi-input multi-output OWC systems can also be transformed, possibly with some performance loss, to parallel channels using pre-/post-coding. Studying the performance of such MC-OWC systems requires characterizing the capacity of the underlying parallel channels. In this paper, upper and lower bounds on the capacity of constant parallel OWC channels with a total average intensity constraint are derived. Then, this paper focuses on finding intensity allocations that maximize the lower bounds given channel-state information at the transmitter (CSIT). Due to its nonconvexity, the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions are used to describe a list of candidate allocations. Instead searching exhaustively for the best solution, low-complexity near-optimal algorithms are proposed. The resulting optimized lower bound nearly coincides with capacity at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Under a quasi-static channel model and in the absence of CSIT, outage probability upper and lower bounds are derived. Those bounds also meet at high SNR, thus characterizing the outage capacity in this regime. Finally, the results are extended to a system with both average and peak intensity constraints. By blending the concepts of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, in this paper, a novel hybrid scheme is conceived for supporting diverse services in future wireless systems. Motivating to maximize energy efficiency (EE), the joint resource management of user clustering (UC) and power allocation is investigated for the downlink hybrid NOMA systems. Under two different power consumption cases, the optimal resource allocation (Opt-RA) algorithm is developed with the help of converting the original mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem to the tractable decoupled problems. For practical implementation, the heuristic resource allocation (Heur-RA) algorithm is also proposed, and it includes a low-complexity UC algorithm based on the candidate search-and-allocation approach. Our simulation results show that, both the Opt-RA and Heur-RA algorithms achieve significantly higher EE performance than other existing algorithms. Further, the results also prove that, the hybrid NOMA conceived is able to exploit the advantages of NOMA scheme, and is superior to conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of EE, as well as achieving higher flexibility for system configuration than NOMA. In this paper, we analyze a carrier-sense multiple access system with all-to-all broadcast data traffic to assess the performance gain obtained by using multiple sector antennas and a receiver setup that can decode multiple packets simultaneously when packets arrive in narrow angle of arrivals. In the broadcast mode of IEEE 802.11p-based vehicle-to-vehicle communications, acknowledgment messages are absent and a fixed contention window is used in medium access. As a result, the probability of multiple vehicles simultaneously transmitting a packet increases with the number of vehicles. In the case of a simultaneous transmission, a receiver with omnidirectional antennas receives power from all the transmitting vehicles and the probability of successfully decoding a packet decreases. This problem can be alleviated by using sector antennas when the simultaneously transmitted packets arrive at a receiver in the narrow angle of arrivals. We show through analysis and simulations that the packet success rate (PSR) can be improved significantly by using the sector antennas’ setup instead of an omnidirectional antenna. Numerical results show that a several-fold increase in the PSR can be achieved in a setup with four sector antennas compared with an omnidirectional antenna when the density of vehicles is large. Aimed at providing high data rate in wireless local area networks (WLANs), the IEEE 802.11ac standard has been developed with key enhancements, including increasing the transmission rate and enlarging the packet payload length. The improvement in the sum rate performance, nevertheless, could become marginal or even disappear when nodes of legacy 802.11a/n standards coexist. It is, therefore, of paramount importance to study how to optimize the network sum rate of a multi-standard WLAN. In this paper, a multi-group model is proposed to analyze the data rate performance of a multi-standard WLAN where nodes with different standards have distinct transmission rates and packet payload lengths. It is shown that the packet payload length is a key system parameter that has a crucial impact on both the network sum rate and the ratio of node data rates. The enhancement proposed in the latest 802.11ac standard on enlarging the packet payload length can improve the data rate performance of its own nodes, but it may lead to the starvation of the legacy 802.11a/n nodes, and even impair the sum rate performance. To maximize the network sum rate with given target ratios of node data rates, the optimal packet payload lengths with or without joint tuning of the initial backoff window sizes are further obtained, which shed important light on the optimal network design of WLANs. In this paper, we consider device-to-device (D2D) communication that is underlaid in a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system and proposes a new framework for power control and pilot allocation. In this scheme, the cellular users (CUs) in each cell get orthogonal pilots which are reused with reuse factor one across cells, while all the D2D pairs share another set of orthogonal pilots. We derive a closed-form capacity lower bound for the CUs with different receive processing schemes. In addition, we derive a capacity lower bound for the D2D receivers and a closed-form approximation of it. We provide power control algorithms to maximize the minimum spectral efficiency (SE) and to maximize the product of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios in the network. Different from prior works, in our proposed power control schemes, we consider joint pilot and data transmission optimization. Finally, we provide a numerical evaluation, where we compare our proposed power control schemes with the maximum transmit power case and the case of conventional multi-cell massive MIMO without D2D communication. In this paper, we propose two non-uniform quantization (NUQ) codebook-based hybrid precoding schemes for two main hybrid precoding implementations, i.e., the full-connected structure and the sub-connected structure, to reduce the feedback overhead in millimeter wave single user multiple-input multiple-output systems. Specifically, we firstly group the angles of the arrive/departures (AOAs/AODs) of the scattering paths into several spatial lobes by exploiting the sparseness property of the millimeter wave in the angular domain, which divides the total angular domain into effective spatial lobes’ coverage angles and ineffective coverage angles. Then, we map the quantization bits non-uniformly to different coverage angles and construct NUQ codebooks, where high numbers of quantization bits are employed for the effective coverage angles to quantize AoAs/AoDs and zero quantization bit is employed for ineffective coverage angles. Finally, two low-complexity hybrid analog/digital precoding schemes are proposed, which utilize the NUQ codebooks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed two NUQ codebook-based hybrid precoding schemes achieve near-optimal spectral efficiencies and show the superiority in reducing the feedback overhead compared with the uniform quantization codebook-based works. In this paper, we consider the frequency synchronization issue in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing distributed antenna systems. There may exist multiple carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) between the transmitter and distributed receive antennas. To solve the multi-CFO estimation problem, we first derive the blind maximum likelihood estimator, which has superior estimation performance, but exhibits high computational complexity. Furthermore, we develop a blind pairing-based efficient estimator (PBEE), which divides the multiple antennas into pairs of two. The two CFOs in each pair are jointly estimated with a carefully designed cost function, which proves to be exactly a cosine function parameterized by the two CFOs even with the effect of noise. Consequently, the joint estimation of the two CFOs can be simplified to the one-dimensional search optimization problem. The PBEE can achieve better CFO estimation performance than the existing competitors. From the theoretical mean square error (MSE) analysis of PBEE, we further derive the optimal antenna pairing scheme by minimizing the signal-to-noise ratio degradation caused by the uncompensated residual CFOs. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is characterized by the ambiguous role of multi-user interference. In short, the beneficial effect of multi-user interference on RF energy harvesting is obtained at the price of a reduced link capacity, thus originating nontrivial tradeoffs between the achievable information rate and the harvestable energy. Arguably, in indoor environments, this tradeoff might be affected by the propagation loss due to blockage objects like walls. Hence, a couple of fundamental questions arise. How much must the network elements be densified to counteract the blockage attenuation? Is blockage always detrimental on the achievable rate-energy tradeoff? In this paper, we analyze the performance of an indoor multiple-input multiple-output SWIPT-enabled network in the attempt to shed a light of those questions. The effects of the obstacles are examined with the help of a stochastic geometry approach in which the locations of energy sources (also referred to as power heads) are distributed by using a Poisson point process and walls are generated through a Manhattan Poisson line process. The stochastic behavior of the signal attenuation and the multi-user interference is studied to obtain the joint complementary cumulative distribution function of information rate and harvested power. Theoretical results are validated through Monte Carlo simulations. Eventually, the rate-energy tradeoff is presented as a function of the density of walls to emphasize the cross-dependences between the deployment of the network elements and the macro parameters characterizing the topology of the venue. We study the optimal resource allocation in the MIMO-based wireless powered underground sensor network (WPUSN) for throughput maximization. Compared to existing WPUSNs that rely on single-antenna wireless power transfer techniques to transmit geological data in real time, the MIMO-based WPUSN can be adaptively replenished by beamforming. Note that, WPUSN has two remarkable features: the severe wireless path loss and diverse data traffic demands from different underground sensors. Further, by considering the quality of service (QoS) with respect to diverse data traffic demands and communication reliability, the throughput of the network is considered as a crucial measure, which suffers from a significant loss since it has to encounter a seriously unreasonable energy scarcity under the strong-heterogeneity underground environment. To this end, the MIMO is used to eliminate the unreasonable distribution of harvested energy resources and improve effective throughput for WPUSNs. In this paper, we formulate a non-convex optimization problem to maximize the system throughput in MIMO-based WPUSNs with QoS assurance. Specifically, we find there exists no mutual forbearance between the time allocation and the beamforming weight, and transform this non-convex problem to a solvable convex-constrained problem with convex sub-problems. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating within the millimeter wave frequency range offer exciting opportunities for the future fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks. While the increased bandwidth and spectral efficiency are attractive, transitioning to millimeter massive MIMO presents significant challenges with respect to blockages, high attenuation, and channel estimation errors. To address these challenges, this paper evaluates the outage performance of a millimeter wave cellular network using massive MIMO under a stochastic set-up subject to pilot contamination and matched-filter precoding. We model the cellular users and base stations with Poisson point processes. Furthermore, we consider blockages from random objects, and employ different path loss and fading models for the line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight scenarios. Moreover, both fixed power transmissions and path loss inversion-based power control are considered along with the sectored antenna patterns. Using stochastic geometry, we derive the moment generating function of the interference experienced by a typical cellular user and its outage probability. It is observed that the environments with different path loss exponents have varying behaviour for similar blockage sizes and densities. In this paper, we propose a simple yet powerful mapping scheme that converts any conventional square-matrix-based differential space-time coding (DSTC) into a nonsquare-matrix-based DSTC. This allows DSTC schemes to be used practically in open-loop large-scale multiple-input multiple-output scenarios. Our proposed scheme may be viewed as the differential counterpart of coherent spatial modulation (SM), of the generalized SM, of Bell Laboratories layered space-time architecture, and of subcarrier-index modulation. The fundamental impediment of the existing DSTC schemes is the excessive complexity imposed by the unitary constraint. Specifically, the transmission rate of conventional DSTC schemes decays as the number of transmit antennas increases. Our proposed scheme eliminates this impediment and thus achieves a significantly higher transmission rate. We introduce four novel construction methods for the nonsquare codewords, some of which include an arbitrary number of nonzero elements in each codeword column. Our analysis shows that the proposed encoding technique reduces the complexity of both the inverse Fourier transform and the detection processes. Channel asymmetry and channel correlation are frequently encountered in wireless communication systems. Orthogonal transmission schemes are usually inefficient in dealing with these problems. In this paper, in order to boost the throughput performance for multiple-input multiple-output broadcast communications in the presence of channel asymmetry and/or channel correlation, we study optimization algorithms for multi-user superposition coding beamforming (SCBF). Starting with solving the minimum power optimization problem for the two-user case, we derive the optimal solution structure of the problem and two types of dedicated algorithms that could efficiently find the optimal solutions with all parameter setups. Extensions are then made to the same problem with the signals of more than two users multiplexed in the power domain as well as to the rate region computation problem. Finally, to adapt our algorithms to more general cases, novel hybrid precoding schemes are proposed, where certain user grouping strategy is used to combine zero-forcing beamforming and SCBF. In this paper, we investigate a trellis-coded space shift keying modulation scheme, called trellis-coded space–time shift keying (TC-STSK), which combines trellis-coded modulation with space shift keying. By analyzing the rank criterion using a graph theoretic approach, we maximize the number of unique differences between pairwise codewords as the code design goal. We discuss the code design principles for achieving diversity, and propose a design algorithm that is mostly suitable for rate- $1/n$ codes, where $n$ is the number of the code output bits. We then propose a diversity adaptation mechanism by selecting only the codewords with desired diversity, and use it to design higher rate codes that achieve full diversity. We also provide the code designs and a modified soft Viterbi decoder for such schemes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve diversity orders expected from the theoretical analysis, and that increasing the number of shift registers and transmit antennas improves the performance of the TC-STSK scheme. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) full-dimensional (FD) MIMO system employs planar arrays at both the base station and the user equipment and can simultaneously support both azimuth and elevation beamforming. In this paper, we propose atomic-norm-based methods for mm-wave FD-MIMO channel estimation under both uniform planar arrays (UPA) and non-uniform planar arrays (NUPA). Unlike existing algorithms, such as compressive sensing (CS) or subspace methods, the atomic-norm-based algorithms do not require to discretize the angle spaces of the angle of arrival and angle of departure into grids, thus provide much better accuracy in estimation. In the UPA case, to reduce the computational complexity, the original large-scale atomic norm minimization problem is approximately reformulated as a semi-definite program (SDP) containing two decoupled two-level Toeplitz matrices. The SDP is then solved via the alternating direction method of multipliers where each iteration involves only closed-form computations. In the NUPA case, the atomic-norm-based formulation for channel estimation becomes nonconvex and a gradient-decent-based algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. This paper proposes a novel semi-blind uplink interference suppression scheme for multicell multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The inter-cell interference (ICI) becomes intenser when a number of users are spatially multiplexed via massive MIMO. Here arises a pilot contamination problem due to the limitation of orthogonal sequence set and thus inter-user interference (IUI) also remains unsuppressed. Our proposal employs a constant modulus algorithm (CMA) known as a blind interference suppression scheme and exploits channel state information (CSI)-aided minimum mean square error (MMSE) postcoding weight as an initial weight of CMA. Although MMSE weight cannot suppress ICI and IUI due to the pilot contamination, it can help subsequent CMA to capture the desired signals which is required for CMA to effectively work. Since CMA can fully exploit degree of freedom of massive arrays by using uncorrelated data signal part, derived weight successfully suppresses ICI/IUI while resolving the pilot contamination problem. A decision feedback channel estimation (DFCE) is then introduced to further improve CSI estimation accuracy and subsequent interference suppression performance. A series of signal processing, MMSE–CMA–DFCE, can be iteratively performed. The computer simulation reveals that our proposal can improve outage probability and it satisfies below the fifth percentile of cumulative distribution with saved symbol amount. This paper focuses on distributed linear precoding when users transmit correlated information over a fading multiple-input and multiple-output multiple access channel. The precoders are optimized in order to minimize the sum-mean square error (MSE) between the source and the estimated symbols. When sources are correlated, minimizing the sum-MSE results in a non-convex optimization problem. The precoders for an arbitrary number of users and transmit and receive antennas are thus obtained via a projected steepest-descent algorithm and a low-complexity heuristic approach. For the more restrictive case of two single-antenna users, a closed-form expression for the minimum sum-MSE precoders is derived. Moreover, for the scenario with a single receive antenna and any number of users, a solution is obtained by means of a semi-definite relaxation. Finally, we also consider precoding schemes where the precoders are decomposed into complex scalars and unit norm vectors. Simulation results show a significant improvement when source correlation is exploited at precoding, especially for low signal-to-noise ratios and when the number of receive antennas is lower than the number of transmitting nodes. Personal area networks (PANs) and body-to-body (B2B) networks are of increasing importance for applications ranging from medical monitoring to entertainment. The performance of such networks is largely determined by the propagation channels in which they operate, and which in turn are strongly impacted by the human body/bodies in these channels. It is thus essential to quantify the impact of different body types/sizes on the channel characteristics for PAN and B2B channels. In this paper, we present an extensive propagation channel measurement campaign in the 2–10 GHz frequency band for SIMO (single-input-multiple-output) PAN and MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) B2B channels. The measurements were done using 60 (for PAN) and 9 (B2B) human subjects, which had widely varying body mass index (BMI) values grouped into three categories. For each BMI category, parameters such as the average path gain, shadowing gain, root-mean-squared delay spread, channel spatial correlation coefficients, amplitude fading statistics, and channel capacity values were extracted for both PAN and B2B channels. A base-station (BS) equipped with multiple antennas can use its spatial dimensions in three different ways: 1) to serve multiple users, thereby achieving a multiplexing gain; 2) to provide spatial diversity in order to improve user rates; and 3) to null interference in neighboring cells. This paper answers the following question: What is the optimal balance between these three competing benefits? We answer this question in the context of the downlink of a cellular network, where multi-antenna BSs serve multiple single-antenna users using zero-forcing beamforming with equal power assignment, while nulling interference at a subset of out-of-cell users. Any remaining spatial dimensions provide transmit diversity for the scheduled users. Utilizing tools from stochastic geometry, we show that, surprisingly, to maximize the per-BS ergodic sum rate, with an optimal allocation of spatial resources, interference nulling does not provide a tangible benefit. The strategy of avoiding inter-cell interference nulling, reserving some fraction of spatial resources for multiplexing, and using the rest to provide diversity, is already close-to-optimal in terms of the sum-rate. However, interference nulling does bring significant benefit to cell-edge users, particularly when adopting a range-adaptive nulling strategy where the size of the cooperating BS cluster is increased for cell-edge users. In this paper, we investigate physical layer security in a two-tier heterogeneous network with sub-6 GHz massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) macro cells and millimeter wave (mmWave) small cells. By considering pilot attacks from the eavesdroppers, we analyze the coverage and secrecy performance using stochastic geometry. For the sub-6 GHz tier, we show that increasing the number of BS antennas is more effective than increasing BS density in improving the coverage performance, whereas densifying BS is more effective for security enhancement. For the mmWave tier, we first derive the success probability of beam alignment based on a beam sweeping-based channel training model. It is shown that the mmWave tier may outperform the sub-6 GHz counterpart in terms of both coverage and secrecy through densifying the base stations. Our results also reveal that the mmWave small cell can provide better coverage performance in the high transmission rate region, and can achieve higher security in the low redundant rate region, which reveals the advantage of using mmWave for secure communication. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where base stations (BSs) are equipped with hundreds of antennas, are an attractive way to handle the rapid growth of data traffic. As the number of user equipments (UEs) increases, the initial access and handover in contemporary networks will be flooded by user collisions. In this paper, a random access protocol is proposed that resolves collisions and performs timing estimation by simply utilizing the large number of antennas envisioned in massive MIMO networks. UEs entering the network perform spreading in both time and frequency domains, and their timing offsets are estimated at the BS in closed form using a subspace decomposition approach. This information is used to compute channel estimates that are subsequently employed by the BS to communicate with the detected UEs. The favorable propagation conditions of massive MIMO suppress interference among UEs, whereas the inherent timing misalignments improve the detection capabilities of the protocol. Numerical results are used to validate the performance of the proposed procedure in massive MIMO networks, under uncorrelated and correlated fading channels. With $2.5 \times 10^{3}$ UEs that may simultaneously become active with probability 1%, a total of 16 frequency–time codes, and 100 antennas, a given UE is detected with probability 75%, and the accuracy of its timing estimate is on the order of few samples. Communication at millimeter wave frequencies will be one of the essential new technologies in 5G. Acquiring an accurate channel estimate is the key to facilitate advanced millimeter wave hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding techniques. Millimeter wave MIMO channel estimation, however, suffers from a considerably increased channel use overhead. This happens due to the limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains that prevent the digital baseband from directly accessing the signal at each antenna. To address this issue, recent research has focused on adaptive closed-loop and two-way channel estimation techniques. In this paper, unlike the prior approaches, we study a non-adaptive, hence rather simple, open-loop millimeter wave MIMO channel estimation technique. We present a random phase rotation design of channel subspace sampling signals and show that they obey the restricted isometry property (RIP) with high probability. We then formulate the channel estimation as a low-rank subspace decomposition problem and, based on the RIP, show that the proposed framework reveals resilience to a low signal-to-noise ratio. It is revealed that the required number of channel uses ensuring a bounded estimation error is linearly proportional to the degrees of freedom of the channel, whereas it converges to a constant value if the number of RF chains can grow proportionally to the channel dimension while keeping the channel rank fixed. In particular, we show that the tighter the RIP characterization the lower the channel estimation error is. We also devise an iterative technique that effectively finds a suboptimal, but stationary, solution to the formulated problem. The proposed technique is shown to have improved channel estimation accuracy with a substantially low channel use overhead as compared to that of previous closed-loop and two-way adaptation techniques. This paper considers the uplink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems, where several mobile stations (MSs) cooperatively transmit hybrid messages, including common messages and private messages, to a single base station (BS). We aim to jointly design transmit precoding at the MSs’ side and antenna selection at the BS side to maximize the achievable system throughput while reducing implementation complexity. The problem at hand is nonconvex and difficult to solve due to the antenna selection constraint. By exploiting the problem structure and linear relaxation, we propose using the Frank–Wolfe method and the well-known weighted mean-square error minimization approach to tackle the problem, leading to an efficient iterative algorithm. Moreover, due to the large number of antennas, the sparsity of antenna selection is also taken into account by introducing an $l_{0}$ -norm penalty function into the objective function. To tackle this nonconvex and discontinuous problem, we resort to quadratic approximation with smooth optimization and extend our proposed algorithm to the sparse optimization problem. In this paper, we propose a combined full duplex (FD)- and half duplex (HD)-based transmission and channel acquisition model for an open-loop multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Assuming residual self-interference at the base station (BS), the idea is to utilize the FD mode during the uplink (UL) training phase in order to achieve simultaneous downlink (DL) data transmission and UL CSI acquisition. More specifically, the BS begins serving a user when its CSI becomes available, while at the same time, it also receives UL pilots from the next scheduled user. We investigate both zero-forcing (ZF) and maximum ratio transmission MIMO beamforming techniques for the DL data transmission in the FD mode. The BS switches to the HD mode once it receives the CSI of all users and it employs ZF beamforming for the DL data transmission until the end of the transmission frame. Furthermore, we derive closed-form approximations for the lower bounded ergodic achievable rate relying on the proposed model. Our numerical results show that the proposed FD–HD transmission and channel acquisition approach outperforms its conventional HD counterpart and achieves higher data rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem with multiple transmit antennas (multiple-input-single-output or distributed antennas setups) is considered in this paper. Besides the constraint on the total transmit power, per-antenna transmit power constraints, and a total weighted power constraint are jointly considered. Moreover, a quality-of-service constraint is also considered. Both linear and nonlinear high power amplifier (HPA) cases are studied. Because the original problem for the linear HPA case is a fractional convex problem, Dinkelbach’s algorithm is implemented to reformulate the problem. By investigating the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, the mathematical properties of the globally optimal solution are studied and proved, which provides a deeper understanding of the structure of power allocation among antennas. These properties also lead to a reduction of the complexity of the algorithms proposed to find the global optimum. For the nonlinear HPA cases, the reformulated problem after successive convex approximation is shown to be exactly in the same form as that of the previous problem with linear HPA with different weights of power consumption at each antenna.
