The emergence of interference alignment (IA) as a degrees-of-freedom optimal strategy motivates the need to investigate whether IA can be leveraged to aid conventional network utility maximization algorithms, which are typically only capable of finding locally optimal solutions. To test the usefulness of IA in this context, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization framework for the downlink of a $G$ -cell multi-antenna network with $K$ users/cell. The first stage of the proposed framework focuses on nulling interference from a set of dominant interferers using IA, while the second stage optimizes transmit and receive beamformers to maximize a network-wide utility using the IA solution as the initial condition. Further, this paper establishes a set of new feasibility results for partial IA that can be used to guide the number of dominant interferers to be nulled in the first stage. Through simulations on specific topologies of a cluster of base stations, it is observed that the impact of IA depends on the choice of the utility function and the presence of out-of-cluster interference. In the absence of out-of-cluster interference, the proposed framework outperforms straightforward optimization when maximizing the minimum rate, while providing marginal gains when maximizing sum rate. This paper investigates a new beamforming approach for interference exploitation, which has recently attracted interest as an alternative to conventional interference-avoidance beamforming for the downlink of multiple-input multiple-output systems. Contrary to existing interference exploitation approaches that focus on signal-to-noise ratio performance, we adopt an approach based on the detection region of the signal constellation. Focusing on quality of service, we then formulate the optimization for minimizing the error probability (EP) for the worst user, subject to power constraints. We do this by employing the knowledge of channel state information at the transmitter, along with all downlink users’ data that are readily available at the base station during downlink transmission. In this context, we also show that the detection-region-based beamforming and the worst user EP downlink beamforming are equivalent problems. Finally, we further propose a sum EPs approach and provide an analytic bound of average symbol error rate performance. Full-duplex transmission is a promising technique to enhance the capacity of relay communications. In this paper, we investigate the power and location optimization for full-duplex decode-and-forward (DF) relaying systems. The outage probability is adopted as the optimization criterion and a two-dimensional (2D) optimization problem is formulated for systems with and without the direct source–destination link. Analytical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate advantages of the power and location optimization. More interestingly, the effect of residual self-interference (RSI) introduced by full-duplex transmission is investigated in terms of the optimal power allocation and relay location deployment and the outage probability performance improvement. Furthermore, we show that the minimal outage probability can be achieved via joint power-location optimization. It is known that superposition signaling in Gaussian interference networks is capable of improving the achievable rate region. However, the problem of maximizing the rate gain offered by superposition signaling is computationally prohibitive, even in the simplest case of two-user single-input single-output interference networks. This paper examines superposition signaling for the general multiple-input multiple-output broadcast Gaussian interference networks. The problem of maximizing either the sum rate or the minimal user’s rate under superposition signaling and dirty paper coding is solved by a computationally efficient path-following procedure, which requires only a convex quadratic program for each iteration but ensures convergence at least to a locally optimal solution. A fractional frequency reuse (FFR) system is an inter-cell interference coordination scheme used in cellular networks. In FFR systems, the available bandwidth is partitioned into orthogonal subbands such that the users near the cell center adopt subbands of a frequency reuse (FR) factor equal to one (i.e., Full FR), and the users near the cell edge adopt the subbands of an FR factor greater than one (i.e., Partial FR). The proper design of Full FR coverage, which is used to distinguish Full FR regions from Partial FR regions, plays a critical role in FFR system performance. This paper studies the optimal Full FR coverage that maximizes system throughput in the downlink in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular networks. For MIMO systems, orthogonal space–time block codes are considered. We analytically compare the outage probabilities of Full FR and Partial FR for a given user’s location, where the outage probability is evaluated through small-scale multipath fading. By doing so, subject to the constraint that a given target outage probability (quality-of-service) is satisfied, the optimal Full FR coverage is analyzed as a function of base station (BS) power. We prove that the optimal Full FR coverage is a non-increasing function of BS power when the powers of all BSs in the network are scaled up or down at the same rate. This result offers insight into the design of Full FR coverage in relation to BS power; we gain insight into the complicated relationship between crucial FFR design parameters. This is a sequel of our previous work on characterization of maximum sum rate of slotted Aloha networks. By extending the analysis to incorporate the capacity-achieving receiver structure, successive interference cancellation (SIC), this paper aims to identify the rate loss due to random access. Specifically, two representative SIC receivers are considered, i.e., ordered SIC, where packets are decoded in a descending order of their received power, and unordered SIC, where packets are decoded in a random order. The maximum sum rate and the corresponding optimal parameter setting including the transmission probability and the information encoding rate in both cases are obtained as the functions of the mean received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The comparison to the capture model shows that the gains are significant only with the ordered SIC at moderate values of the mean received SNR $\rho $. With a large $\rho $ , the rate gap diminishes, and they all have the same high-SNR slope of $e^{-1}$ , which is far below that of the ergodic sum capacity of fading channels. The effect of multipacket reception (MPR) on the sum rate performance is also studied by comparing the MPR receivers including SIC and the capture model to the classical collision model. This paper considers the problem of dynamic power allocation in the downlink of multi-cell networks, where each cell utilizes non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based resource allocation. Also, coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission is utilized among multiple cells to serve users experiencing severe inter-cell interference (ICI). Under this CoMP- NOMA framework, CoMP transmission is applied to a user experiencing less distinctive channel gain with multiple base stations (BSs)/cells (i.e., severe ICI-prone user) and non-CoMP transmission (i.e., transmission without any coordination among multiple BSs) is applied to a user experiencing dominating channel gain with only one BS/cell, while NOMA is utilized at each BS to schedule CoMP and non-CoMP users over the same transmission resources, i.e., time, spectrum and space. After discussing various CoMP- NOMA models for downlink power allocation in multi-cell networks, we focus on a joint transmission CoMP- NOMA (JT-CoMP-NOMA) model. For the JT-CoMP-NOMA model, an optimal joint power allocation problem is formulated and the solution is derived for each CoMP- set consisting of multiple cooperating BSs (i.e., CoMP BSs). To avoid the huge computational complexity of the joint power optimization approach, we propose a distributed power optimization approach at each cooperating BS whose optimal solution is independent of the solution of other coordinating BSs. The distributed solution for the joint power optimization problem is validated and numerical performance evaluation is carried out for the proposed CoMP- NOMA models including JT-CoMP-NOMA and coordinated scheduling CoMP- NOMA (CS-CoMP-NOMA). To improve the spectral efficiency in long-term evolution systems, the resource blocks (RBs) are shared among different cells/base stations (BSs) resulting in interference among the cells/BSs on each RB, although all the sub-carriers (SCs) in an RB may not be used in a cell. Defining the load of a given BS per RB as the fraction of the active SCs in that RB, in this paper, we present a generalized signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) model for downlink users on a given RB. This model considers both the transmit powers of the BSs and the loads of the cells over that RB. Under this load-coupled SINR model, to study the feasibility of a given rate demand vector for users, we formulate an optimization problem of minimizing the total load of the BSs on the RBs. Then, for two different scenarios of feasible and infeasible demand vectors, respectively, we study the load management problem (i.e., minimizing the total load of the BSs on the RBs) and admission control problem (i.e., finding the sub-set of users with maximum cardinality whose demands can be concurrently satisfied), respectively. Our theoretical investigations, which provide guidelines for designing radio resource management methods for load-coupled OFDMA networks, are complemented through Monte Carlo simulations. The non-regenerative massive multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) relay systems are introduced in this paper. The NOMA is invoked with a superposition coding technique at the transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique at the receiver. In addition, a maximum mean square error-SIC receiver design is adopted. With the aid of deterministic equivalent and matrix analysis tools, a closed-form expression of the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) is derived. To characterize the performance of the considered systems, closed-form expressions of the capacity and sum rate are further obtained based on the derived SINR expression. Insights from the derived analytical results demonstrate that the ratio between the transmitter antenna number and the relay number is a dominate factor of the system performance. Afterward, the correctness of the derived expressions are verified by the Monte Carlo simulations with numerical results. Simulation results also illustrate that: 1) the transmitter antenna, averaged power value, and user number display the positive correlations on the capacity and sum rate performances, whereas the relay number displays a negative correlation on the performance and 2) the combined massive-MIMO-NOMA scheme is capable of achieving higher capacity performance compared with the conventional MIMO-NOMA, relay-assisted NOMA, and massive-MIMO orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme. In this paper, we consider a decode-and-forward-based wireless multihop network with a single source node, a single destination node, and $N$ intermediate nodes. To increase the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of the system, we propose a cooperative multihop communication protocol with spatial reuse, in which interference is treated as noise or can be canceled. The performance of a spatial-reused space–time-coded cooperative multihop network is analyzed over Rayleigh fading channels. In particular, the exact closed-form expression for the outage probability at the $n$th receiving node is derived when there are multiple interference sources over non-i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, the outage probability expressions are derived when nodes are equipped with more than one antenna. In addition, to reduce the effect of interference on multihop transmission, we propose a simple power control scheme that is only dependent on the statistical knowledge of channels. In the second approach for managing the interference, linear interference cancelation schemes are employed for both noncooperative and cooperative spatial-reused multihop transmissions. Finally, the analytic results were confirmed by simulations. Simulation results show that the spatial-reused multihop transmission outperforms the interference-free multihop transmission in terms of energy efficiency in low- and medium-signal-to-noise scenarios. Fractional frequency reuse (FFR) and soft frequency reuse (SFR) systems are an efficient cellular interference management technique to reduce inter-cell interference in multi-cell OFDMA networks. In this paper, a new and unified analytical framework for performance evaluation for both systems over a composite fading environment is presented. Explicit expressions are obtained for the area spectral efficiency (ASE) with both FFR and SFR, under fully loaded and partially loaded systems for downlink and uplink, and in generalized frequency reuse factor. The presented numerical result provides useful system design guidelines between the two systems. It is demonstrated that SFR outperforms FFR in a partially loaded scenario while the opposite is true for fully loaded system. In this paper, we consider an amplify-and-forward hybrid satellite-terrestrial co-operative network in the presence of cochannel interference (CCI). More specifically, we assume that both the satellite-destination and the satellite-relay links undergo the shadowed-Rician fading and the relay-destination link follows the Nakagami-m fading. By applying the amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol at the terrestrial relay, both the relay and the destination are corrupted by cochannel interference from the terrestrial network. Based on this setup, we first derive the approximate statistical distributions signal-to-interference-plus noise ratio (SINR) and then analyze the system performance. To obtain more insights into the system performance, some asymptotical bit-error rate (BER) results are provided. This paper studies the suppression of cross-tier intercell interference (ICI) generated by a macro base station (MBS) to pico user equipments (PUEs) in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Different from existing ICI avoidance schemes such as enhanced ICI cancellation (eICIC) and coordinated beamforming, which generally operate at the MBS, we propose a full duplex (FD)-assisted ICI cancellation (fICIC) scheme, which can operate at each pico BS (PBS) individually and is transparent to the MBS. The basic idea of the fICIC is to apply FD technique at the PBS such that the PBS can send the desired signals and forward the listened cross-tier ICI simultaneously to PUEs. We first consider the narrowband single-user case, where the MBS serves a single macro UE and each PBS serves a single PUE. We obtain the closed-form solution of the optimal fICIC scheme, and analyze its asymptotical performance in ICI-dominated scenario. We then investigate the general narrowband multiuser case, where both MBS and PBSs serve multiple UEs. We devise a low-complexity algorithm to optimize the fICIC aimed at maximizing the downlink sum rate of the PUEs subject to user fairness constraint. Finally, the generalization of the fICIC to wideband systems is investigated. Simulations validate the analytical results and demonstrate the advantages of the fICIC on mitigating cross-tier ICI. Assuming a network of infinite extent, several researchers have analyzed small-cell networks using a Poisson point process (PPP) location model, leading to simple analytic expressions. The general assumption has been that these results apply to finite-area networks as well. However, do the results of infinite-area networks apply to finite-area networks? In this paper, we answer this question by obtaining an accurate approximation for the achievable signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and user capacity in the downlink of a finite-area network with a fixed number of access points (APs). The APs are uniformly distributed within the area of interest. Our analysis shows that, crucially, the results of infinite-area networks are very different from those for finite-area networks of low-to-medium AP density. Comprehensive simulations are used to illustrate the accuracy of our analysis. For practical values of signal transmit powers and AP densities, the analytic expressions capture the behavior of the system well. As an added benefit, the formulations developed here can be used in parametric studies for network design. To enhance the multiplexing gain of two-receiver Multiple-Input-Single-Output Broadcast Channel with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), a class of Rate-Splitting (RS) approaches has been proposed recently, which divides one receiver's message into a common and a private part, and superposes the common message on top of Zero-Forcing precoded private messages. In this paper, with quantized CSIT, we study the ergodic sum rate of two schemes, namely RS-S and RS-ST, where the common message(s) are transmitted via a space and space-time design, respectively. Firstly, we upper-bound the sum rate loss incurred by each scheme relative to Zero-Forcing Beamforming (ZFBF) with perfect CSIT. Secondly, we show that, to maintain a constant sum rate loss, RS-S scheme enables a feedback overhead reduction over ZFBF with quantized CSIT. Such reduction scales logarithmically with the constant rate loss at high Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR). We also find that, compared to RS-S scheme, RS-ST scheme offers a further feedback overhead reduction that scales with the discrepancy between the feedback overhead employed by the two receivers when there are alternating receiver-specific feedback qualities. Finally, simulation results show that both schemes offer a significant SNR gain over conventional single-user/multiuser mode switching when the feedback overhead is fixed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spectrum refarming (SR) refers to a radio resource management technique which supports different generations of cellular networks to operate in the same radio spectrum. In this paper, an underlay SR model is proposed for an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) system to share the spectrum of a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system through intelligently exploiting the interference margin provided by the CDMA system when operating with a low system load. The asymptotic signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the CDMA system is used to quantify the interference margin, which interestingly does not depend on the instantaneous information (spreading codes and channel state information) of the CDMA system, thanks to its internal power control. By using the transmit power constraints together with the derived interference margin, the uplink resource allocation problem for OFDMA system is formulated and solved through dual decomposition method. The proposed SR system only requires high level system parameters from the CDMA system, hence, the upgrading of legacy CDMA system is not needed. Simulation results have verified our theoretical analysis, and validated the effectiveness of the proposed resource allocation algorithm and its capability to protect the legacy CDMA users. In this paper, an energy harvesting dual-hop relaying system without/with the presence of co-channel interference (CCI) is investigated. Specifically, the energy constrained multi-antenna relay node is powered by either the information signal of the source or via the signal receiving from both the source and interferer. In particular, we first study the outage probability and ergodic capacity of an interference free system, and then extend the analysis to an interfering environment. To exploit the benefit of multiple antennas, three different linear processing schemes are investigated, namely, 1) Maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission (MRC/MRT), 2) Zero-forcing/MRT (ZF/MRT) and 3) Minimum mean-square error/MRT (MMSE/MRT). For all schemes, both the systems outage probability and ergodic capacity are studied, and the achievable diversity order is also presented. In addition, the optimal power splitting ratio minimizing the outage probability is characterized. Our results show that the implementation of multiple antennas increases the energy harvesting capability, hence, significantly improves the systems performance. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the CCI could be potentially exploited to substantially boost the performance, while the choice of a linear processing scheme plays a critical role in determining how much gain could be extracted from the CCI. This paper studies the impact of hardware mismatch (HM) between the base station (BS) and the user equipment (UE) in the downlink (DL) of large-scale antenna systems. Analytical expressions to predict the achievable rates are derived for different precoding methods, i.e., matched filter (MF) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF), using large system analysis techniques. Furthermore, the upper bounds on achievable rates of MF and RZF with HM are investigated, which are related to the statistics of the circuit gains of the mismatched hardware. Moreover, we present a study of HM calibration, where we take zero-forcing (ZF) precoding as an example to compare two HM calibration schemes, i.e., Pre-precoding Calibration (Pre-Cal) and Post-precoding Calibration (Post-Cal). This paper addresses achievable rates and related link adaptation for precoded Multiple-Input Multiple-Output transmission in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access system with uncompensated frequency flat transceiver I/Q imbalance. Precoder selection on the mirror subcarrier induces variations of the signal quality on the subcarrier of interest and causes outage. We consider link adaptation strategies with infinite rate granularity for block and ergodic fading models where the transmitter knows the statistics of the induced interference and has perfect channel state information of the wanted link. In this paper, the effects of interference on composite fading environments, where multipath fading coexists with shadowing, are investigated. Based on some mathematical convenient expressions for the sum of squared \cal K -distributed random variables, which are derived for the first time, important statistical metrics for the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) are studied for various cases including non identical, identical and fully correlated statistics. Furthermore, our analysis is extended to multi-channel receivers and in particular to selection diversity (SD) receivers, investigating two distinct cases, namely, signal-to-noise ratio based and SINR-based SD. For all scenarios, simplified expressions are also provided for the interference limited case, where the influence of thermal noise is ignored. The derived expressions are used to analyze the performance, in terms of the average bit error probability (ABEP) and the outage probability (OP) , of such systems operating over composite fading environments. A high SNR analysis is also presented for the OP and the ABEP, giving a clear physical insight of the system's performance in terms of the diversity and coding gains. This paper analyzes the performance of the primary users (PUs) and secondary users (SUs) in an arbitrarily-shaped underlay cognitive network. In order to meet the interference threshold requirement for a primary receiver at an arbitrary location, we consider different SU activity protocols that limit the number of active SUs. We propose a framework, based on the moment-generating function of the interference due to a random SU, to analytically compute the outage probability in the primary network, as well as the average number of active SUs in the secondary network. We also propose a cooperation-based SU activity protocol in the underlay cognitive network that includes the existing threshold-based protocol as a special case. We study the average number of active SUs for the different SU activity protocols, subject to a given outage probability constraint at the PU, and we employ it as an analytical approach to compare the effect of different SU activity protocols on the performance of the primary and secondary networks. In this paper, we provide a global framework analysis of a dual-hop mixed radio frequency (RF)/free space optical (FSO) system with multiple branches/relays wherein the first and second hops, respectively, consist of RF and FSO channels. To cover various cases of fading, we propose generalized channels’ models for RF and FSO links that follow the Nakagami-m and the double generalized gamma distributions, respectively. Moreover, we suggest channel state information (CSI)-assisted relaying or variable relaying gain based amplifiy-and-forward amplification. Partial relay selection with outdated CSI is assumed as a relay selection protocol based on the knowledge of the RF CSI. In order to derive the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio statistics, such as the cumulative distribution function, the probability density function, the higher order moments, the amount of fading and the moment generating function, the numerical values of the fading severity parameters are only valid for integer values. Based on these statistics, we derive closed-forms of the outage probability, the bit error probability, the ergodic capacity, and the outage capacity in terms of Meijer-G, univariate, bivariate, and trivariate Fox-H functions. Capitalizing on these expressions, we derive the asymptotic high SNR to unpack valuable engineering insights of the system performance. In this paper, we consider a system where full-duplex (FD) base-stations (BSs) communicate with half-duplex (HD) downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) users in a multi-user multi-cell network, where all nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. The introduction of FD BSs offers potential to increase spectral efficiency, however, it also causes a surge in the number of interference links compared with the HD network counterpart. Here, we apply linear interference alignment (IA) to manage interference in this network under imperfect channel state information (CSI). First, we characterize the performance losses incurred with respect to the achievable sum rate and degrees of freedom (DoFs). Results show that the general trend in performance loss is mainly determined by how the error scales with the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In particular, full UL and DL DoF can be achieved even under imperfect CSI when the channel error is at least inversely proportional to SNR. Moreover, in such cases the sum rate loss is always finite, and either goes to zero or is upper bounded by a derived value. Second, we design two linear IA algorithms applicable to the system under consideration. These are based on minimizing the mean square error (MMSE) and maximizing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, and consider statistical knowledge of the CSI error for added robustness. The proposed algorithms follow specific design principles that distribute the different interference components amongst the various beamformers and result in unitary receivers and precoders. In addition, we show that under certain conditions both designs result in identical beamforming solutions, even though the MMSE algorithm has lower computational complexity. The distributed power control algorithms available in this paper assume perfect estimation of interference power at the receivers and often, the availability of perfect local channel state information (CSI). However, perfect estimation of interference power or acquisition of channel information is impractical. In this paper, we consider a generic class of distributed power control algorithms and analyze the resulting performance loss when faced with errors in CSI and/or interference level estimation. We approximate such power control algorithms with linearized state space dynamics wherein the errors in the estimation of received interference or the CSI, can be modeled as additive observation noise. Based on the proposed model, we derive lower bounds on the norm of the errors in the transmit power vector and receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) vector. Our analysis suggests that when the target SINR vector approaches the Pareto-optimal bound, the errors in the transmit vectors could grow without bound. As a consequence, to maintain a performance loss within an acceptable range, either much longer estimation times or lower target SINRs are required. Despite being ubiquitous in practice, the performance of maximal-ratio combining (MRC) in the presence of interference is not well understood. Because the interference received at each antenna originates from the same set of interferers but partially decorrelates over the fading channel, it possesses a complex correlation structure. This paper develops a realistic analytic model that accurately accounts for the interference correlation using stochastic geometry. Modeling interference by a Poisson shot noise process with independent Nakagami fading, we derive the link success probability for dual-branch interference-aware MRC. Using this result, we show that the common assumption that all receive antennas experience equal interference power underestimates the true performance, although this gap rapidly decays with increasing the Nakagami parameter mI of the interfering links. In contrast, ignoring interference correlation leads to a highly optimistic performance estimate for MRC, especially for large mI. In the low outage probability regime, our success probability expression can be considerably simplified. Observations based from the analysis include the following: 1) For small path loss exponents, MRC and minimum mean square error combining exhibit similar performance, and 2) the gains of MRC over selection combining are smaller in the interference-limited case than in the well-studied noise-limited case. In this paper, an adaptive scheme for amplify-and-forward relaying networks is proposed, which selects a certain transmission mode for each communication process. Depending on the instantaneous channel conditions, one of the following modes is selected: direct transmission with no cooperation, cooperative transmission with half-duplex relaying and maximal-ratio combining at the destination, or cooperative transmission with full-duplex relaying and maximal-ratio combining at the destination. A three-node network is considered, containing a single-antenna source, a two-antenna relay that is able to implement full-duplex communication, and a single-antenna destination. Energy normalization per block is assumed, so that in those modes using cooperation, the system’s transmission power is shared between source and relay. The performance analysis is provided in terms of outage probability and energy efficiency. We derive a tight approximate expression in closed form for the outage probability and an approximate expression in integral form for the mean energy consumption. The results show that our scheme outperforms all of transmission modes separately in terms of outage probability, while being more energy efficient than the cooperative transmission modes. In addition, the asymptotic analysis proves that the proposed scheme achieves full diversity order equal to 2, thus outperforming those schemes with direct transmission or full-duplex cooperation only. In cognitive radio networks, the cross-channel gain from a cognitive transmitter (CT) to a primary receiver (PR) is critical for spectrum sharing and obtaining the cross-channel gain is very difficult. Even though proactive estimation allows the CT to autonomously estimate the cross-channel gain, it may cause severe interference to the PR. This raises a new issue for spectrum sensing, called spectrum sensing interference. In this paper, we deal with the sensing interference and propose a relay-assisted method to conduct the proactive estimation, which obtains the cross-channel gain with much less interference to the PR. In our method, we let the CT act as a full-duplex amplify-and-forward relay to probe the close-loop power control between primary transceivers. By measuring the power adjustment of the primary signal, the CT estimates the cross-channel gain. This paper presents an analytical performance investigation of both beamforming (BF) and interference cancellation (IC) strategies for a device-to-device (D2D) communication system underlaying a cellular network with an $M$-antenna base station (BS). We first derive new closed-form expressions for the ergodic achievable rate for BF and IC precoding strategies with quantized channel state information (CSI), as well as, perfect CSI. Then, novel lower and upper bounds are derived which apply for an arbitrary number of antennas and are shown to be sufficiently tight to the Monte-Carlo results. Based on these results, we examine in detail three important special cases including: high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), weak interference between cellular link and D2D link, and BS equipped with a large number of antennas. We also derive asymptotic expressions for the ergodic achievable rate for these scenarios. Based on these results, we obtain valuable insights into the impact of the system parameters, such as the number of antennas, SNR and the interference for each link. In particular, we show that an irreducible saturation point exists in the high SNR regime, while the ergodic rate under IC strategy is verified to be always better than that under BF strategy. In this paper, we consider multiple-input single-output (MISO) physical layer multicasting, where several multiantenna transmitters each simultaneously multicast a common message to a distinct set of single-antenna receivers, causing interference between different multicast messages. To optimize the achievable rate of this MISO multicast interference channel, we propose iterative distributed transmit optimization algorithms that are based on interference leakage control, requiring local channel state information at each transmitter and leakage information exchange among transmitters. We, furthermore, propose extensions of existing coordinated multipoint transmission schemes that have been developed for unicast interference channels, such as signal to leakage and noise ratio beamforming, to the considered multicast system. Such methods are of importance, e.g., for future releases of LTE that will support multiantenna multicasting using MBMS/MBSFN. Device-to-device (D2D) communication is deemed as a promising technology to improve the spectrum efficiency of the cellular systems. In this paper, we study a resource sharing scheme for the D2D communication underlaying cellular networks, where multiple D2D pairs can share subchannels with multiple cellular users (CUs). Our optimization task is to maximize the sum rate of D2D pairs while satisfying the rate requirements of all CUs. The formulated problem falls naturally into a mixed integer programming form that is intractable. We first develop a subchannel sharing protocol, by which we can determine whether or not a subchannel can be reused by two D2D pairs. Then, we prove that the problem can be well approximated by ignoring the mutual interference among the D2D pairs that share the same subchannels without deteriorating the performance of both the CUs and the D2D pairs. Based on the analysis results, we propose an efficient subchannel allocation scheme by employing a simple greedy strategy, as well as a power distribution algorithm that can work out almost the optimal solution to the original problem. Numerical results show that our proposal can significantly increase spectrum efficiency of the cellular system. This paper proposes an alignment based interference cancellation scheme for a multi-cell network with multiple-input multiple-output users under a Gaussian Interference compounded broadcast channel scenario. The basic idea is to split up the role of the transmit beamforming matrix according to the type of interference caused by each base station. It will be shown that, for a network of L base stations, the proposed method would result in achieving (L-1) degrees of freedom per user and convert the multi-cell multi-user MIMO channel into a set of single-cell single-user MIMO channels. Finally, we derive the relationship between all the relevant network elements as N_t=(L-d_s+1)K^\primeN_r+1, where N_t and $N_r$ are the numbers of transmit and receive antennas, respectively, L$ and d_s$ denote the number of cells and the number of data streams transmitted from each base station, and is the number of users per cell defined under the proposed system model. While cognitive radio enables spectrum-efficient wireless communication, radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting from ambient interference is an enabler for energy-efficient wireless communication. In this paper, we model and analyze cognitive and energy harvesting-based device-to-device (D2D) communication in cellular networks. The cognitive D2D transmitters harvest energy from ambient interference and use one of the channels allocated to cellular users (in uplink or downlink), which is referred to as the D2D channel, to communicate with the corresponding receivers. We investigate two spectrum access policies for cellular communication in the uplink or downlink, namely, random spectrum access (RSA) policy and prioritized spectrum access (PSA) policy. In RSA, any of the available channels including the channel used by the D2D transmitters can be selected randomly for cellular communication, while in PSA the D2D channel is used only when all of the other channels are occupied. A D2D transmitter can communicate successfully with its receiver only when it harvests enough energy to perform channel inversion toward the receiver, the D2D channel is free, and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (\ssr SINR ) at the receiver is above the required threshold; otherwise, an outage occurs for the D2D communication. We use tools from stochastic geometry to evaluate the performance of the proposed communication system model with general path-loss exponent in terms of outage probability for D2D and cellular users. We show that energy harvesting can be a reliable alternative to power cognitive D2D transmitters while achieving acceptable performance. Under the same \ssr SINR outage requirements as for the non-cognitive case, cognitive channel access improves the outage probability for D2D users for both the spectrum access policies. When compared with the RSA policy, the PSA policy provides a better performance to the D2D users. Also, using an uplink channel provides improved performance to the D2D users in dense networks when compared to a downlink channel. Existing cellular network analyses, and even simulations, typically use the standard path loss model where received power decays like \Vert x\Vert^-\alpha over a distance \Vert x\Vert. This standard path loss model is quite idealized, and in most scenarios the path loss exponent \alpha is itself a function of \Vert x\Vert, typically an increasing one. Enforcing a single path loss exponent can lead to orders of magnitude differences in average received and interference powers versus the true values. In this paper, we study multi-slope path loss models, where different distance ranges are subject to different path loss exponents. We focus on the dual-slope path loss function, which is a piece-wise power law and continuous and accurately approximates many practical scenarios. We derive the distributions of SIR, SNR, and finally SINR before finding the potential throughput scaling, which provides insight on the observed cell-splitting rate gain. The exact mathematical results show that the SIR monotonically decreases with network density, while the converse is true for SNR, and thus the network coverage probability in terms of SINR is maximized at some finite density. With ultra-densification (network density goes to infinity), there exists a phase transition in the near-field path loss exponent : if \alpha_{0} >1 unbounded potential throughput can be achieved asymptotically; if \alpha_{0} <1$, ultra-densification leads in the extreme case to zero throughput. Small cell networks are regarded as a promising candidate to meet the exponential growth of mobile data traffic in cellular networks. With a dense deployment of access points, spatial reuse will be improved, and uniform coverage can be provided. However, such performance gains cannot be achieved without effective intercell interference management. In this paper, a novel interference coordination strategy, called user-centric intercell interference nulling , is proposed for small cell networks. A main merit of the proposed strategy is its ability to effectively identify and mitigate the dominant interference for each user. Different from existing works, each user selects the coordinating base stations (BSs) based on the relative distance between the home BS and the interfering BSs, called the interference nulling (IN) range, and thus interference nulling adapts to each user's own interference situation. By adopting a random spatial network model, we derive an approximate expression of the successful transmission probability to the typical user, which is then used to determine the optimal IN range. Simulation results shall confirm the tightness of the approximation, and demonstrate significant performance gains (about 35–40 $\%$) of the proposed coordination strategy, compared with the non-coordination case. Moreover, it is shown that the proposed strategy outperforms other interference nulling methods. Finally, the effect of imperfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated, where CSI is assumed to be obtained via limited feedback. The rate maximization for the $K$-user interference channels (ICs) has been investigated extensively in the literature. However, the practical problem of minimizing the error probability with given signal modulations and/or data rates of the users is less studied. In this paper, by utilizing additional degrees of freedom from the improper signaling (versus the conventional proper signaling) , we seek to optimize the precoding matrices for the $K$-user single-input single-output (SISO) ICs to minimize pair-wise error probability (PEP) and symbol error rate (SER) with two proposed algorithms, respectively. Compared with conventional proper signaling and other state-of-the-art improper signaling designs, our proposed improper signaling schemes achieve notable error rate improvement in SISO-ICs under both the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and cellular system setups with or without channel coding. Our study provides another viewpoint for optimizing transmissions in ICs and further justifies the practical benefit of improper signaling in interference-limited communication systems. Device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks is a promising technology to improve network resource utilization. In D2D-enabled cellular networks, interference generated by D2D communications is usually viewed as an obstacle to cellular communications. However, in this paper, we present a new perspective on the role of D2D interference by taking security issues into consideration. We consider a large-scale D2D-enabled cellular network with eavesdroppers overhearing cellular communications. Using stochastic geometry, we model such a network and analyze the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) distributions, connection probabilities and secrecy probabilities of both the cellular and D2D links. We propose two criteria for guaranteeing performances of secure cellular communications, namely the strong and weak performance guarantee criteria. Based on the obtained analytical results of link characteristics, we design optimal D2D link scheduling schemes under these two criteria respectively. Both analytical and numerical results show that the interference from D2D communications can enhance physical layer security of cellular communications and at the same time create extra transmission opportunities for D2D users. In this paper, we propose transmit antenna selection with maximal ratio combining (TAS/MRC) in dual-hop decode-and-forward spectrum-sharing relaying networks with the primary user's interference and outdated channel state information (CSI). In this network, a single antenna that maximizes the received SNR is selected at the secondary transmitter, and the MRC is adopted at the secondary receiver. To efficiently evaluate the impact of key parameters on the system performance, we derive the exact analytical expression for the outage probability of the secondary network in a Rayleigh fading channel. Moreover, we present simple asymptotic expressions for the outage probability in a high SNR regime, which reveal practical insights on the achievable diversity order and coding gain. The findings suggest that whether the outdated CSI concerning the secondary transmission links has significant impact on the outage probability of the system depends on the interference power constraint at primary receivers. Specifically, under the proportional interference power constraint, the achievable diversity order is affected by imperfect CSI regarding the secondary transmission links, and the diversity–multiplexing tradeoff is independent of the primary network. However, under the fixed interference power constraint, the error floor is displayed, and the achievable diversity order reduces to zero regardless of the CSI concerning the secondary transmission links. Device-to-device (D2D) communications have been recently proposed as an effective way to increase both spectrum and energy efficiency for future cellular systems. In this paper, joint mode selection, channel assignment, and power control in D2D communications are addressed. We aim at maximizing the overall system throughput while guaranteeing the signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio of both D2D and cellular links. Three communication modes are considered for D2D users: cellular mode, dedicated mode, and reuse mode. The optimization problem could be decomposed into two subproblems: power control and joint mode selection and channel assignment. The joint mode selection and channel assignment problem is NP-hard, whose optimal solution can be found by the branch-and-bound method, but is very complicated. Therefore, we develop low-complexity algorithms according to the network load. In multi-antenna broadcast networks, the base stations (BSs) rely on the channel state information (CSI) of the users to perform user scheduling and downlink transmission. However, in networks with large number of users, obtaining CSI from all users is arduous, if not impossible, in practice. This paper proposes channel feedback reduction techniques based on the theory of compressive sensing (CS), which permits the BS to obtain CSI with acceptable recovery guarantees under substantially reduced feedback overhead. Additionally, assuming noisy CS measurements at the BS, inexpensive ways for improving post-CS detection are explored. The proposed techniques are shown to reduce the feedback overhead, improve CS detection at the BS, and achieve a sum-rate close to that obtained by noiseless dedicated feedback channels. This paper focuses on multicell coordinated beamforming in the presence of channel state information (CSI) errors, where base stations (BSs) collaboratively mitigate their intercell interference (ICI). Assuming that the CSI errors are hyper-spherically bounded, we consider an optimization problem that minimizes the overall transmission power of BSs subject to signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) constraints at each mobile station (MS). We solve this problem in a distributed manner with a limited information exchange among BSs. Using semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and the S-Lemma, we first reformulate our optimization problem into a numerically tractable one. Since the SINR constraints are coupled, we introduce an algorithm by which each BS can obtain a local version of its coupling variables via a small data exchange with other BSs. Then, we propose an iterative algorithm that employs the projected gradient method to coordinate ICI across multiple BSs. Finally, we extend the application of the proposed algorithm to solve the problem of robust and distributed per-user SINR maximization under per-BS power constraints. This paper analyzes the outage performance in finite wireless networks. Unlike most prior works, which either assumed a specific network shape or considered a special location of the reference receiver, we propose two general frameworks for analytically computing the outage probability at any arbitrary location of an arbitrarily-shaped finite wireless network: (i) a moment generating function-based framework which is based on the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform of a cumulative distribution and (ii) a reference link power gain-based framework which exploits the distribution of the fading power gain between the reference transmitter and receiver. The outage probability is spatially averaged over both the fading distribution and the possible locations of the interferers. The boundary effects are accurately accounted for using the probability distribution function of the distance of a random node from the reference receiver. For the case of the node locations modeled by a Binomial point process and Nakagami-m fading channel, we demonstrate the use of the proposed frameworks to evaluate the outage probability at any location inside either a disk or polygon region. We study the outage performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing dual-hop opportunistic amplify-and-forward relaying in the presence of I/Q imbalance (IQI) in all nodes. We derive a closed-form expression for the end-to-end outage probability for the general case where each node suffers from a different IQI level and assuming that the distance between source and relay is not the same for all relays. Furthermore, we consider the more general case where there is a direct link between the source and the destination and we derive a closed-form expression for the end-to-end outage probability for both maximum-ratio and selection combining at the destination. To gain more insights, we analyze a special case where all relays lie on the perpendicular line midway between source and destination and all nodes experience the same IQI level. Our simulations show excellent match to the analytical results and both demonstrate that uncompensated IQI can be detrimental but it can also be effectively mitigated using a few opportunistic relays. The interference to the primary receiver (PR) is a critical issue in the resource allocation of cognitive radio (CR) networks. For instance, the nonlinearity of the power amplifier (PA) causes nonlinear interference to the PRs. This paper studies the power allocation in cognitive radio networks by considering the nonlinear effects of the PA on the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the secondary receiver (SR) and the adjacent channel interference (ACI) to the PRs. A nonlinear PA with limited dynamic range and a lower limit on the transmit power is assumed for the secondary transmitter (ST). To control the resulting ACI from the ST to the PRs, the PA needs to be turned off in some fading blocks. To investigate the throughput, an analytical expression for the probability of data transmission between the secondary users is derived as a function of the interference temperature limits of the PRs. All analyses are performed for both peak and average ACI power constraints. Through theoretical analysis and simulation studies, maximum achievable average SNR at the SR is investigated. This paper studies generalized single-stream transmit beamforming employing receive array co-channel interference reduction algorithms under slow and flat fading multiuser wireless systems. The impact of imperfect prediction of channel state information for the desired user spatially uncorrelated transmit channels on the effectiveness of transmit beamforming for different interference reduction techniques is investigated. The case of over-loaded receive array with closely-spaced elements is considered, wherein it can be configured to null specified interfering sources. Both dominant interference reduction and adaptive interference reduction techniques for statistically ordered and unordered interferers powers, respectively, are thoroughly studied. The effect of outdated statistical ordering of the interferers powers on the efficiency of dominant interference reduction is studied and then compared against the adaptive interference reduction. For the system models described above, new analytical formulations for the statistics of combined signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio are presented, from which results for conventional maximum ratio transmission and single-antenna best transmit selection can be directly deduced as limiting cases. These results are then utilized to obtain quantitative measures for various performance metrics. We consider a multi-way relay network with multiple users exchanging information with each other via a multi-antenna relay. The multi-way relaying strategy consists of one multiple access phase and multiple broadcast phases. We jointly design relay beamforming matrices and users’ linear processing receivers in the broadcast phases to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) under the relay power budget. For the non-convex joint optimization problem, we propose to solve it by iteratively optimizing the relay beam matrices and receiver processing matrices in two sub-problems. For the receiver processing, both maximum-ratio-combining (MRC) receiver and zero-forcing (ZF) receiver are designed. We show that our iterative approach with the MRC receiver leads to a local maximum for the original joint optimization problem, while the ZF receiver has the computational advantage with a lower complexity. To further improve the performance, we design the successive interference cancellation at each user’s receiver based on the SINR criterion to sequentially decode symbols from other users. Simulation shows that our proposed algorithm for joint design provides substantial improvement in the sum rate than the existing methods that use the sum rate as the design objective. Finally, we investigate the performance of our proposed algorithm under partial channel state informations (CSIs). We consider cellular networks with co-operative clusters of neighboring base stations detecting multiple in-cluster users subject to interference from out-of-cluster users. We assume that the base stations, equipped with multiple antennas, are connected to a central processor in each cluster. For such a network, we first consider centralized processing where all the in-cluster user signals are sent to the central processor for linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE) estimation. Next, we consider partially decentralized processing where the in-cluster user signals are locally estimated at each base station, and the local estimates are combined at the central processor. For both processing architectures, we derive new expressions for the achievable rate of an in-cluster user when the channels between the users and base stations are subject to independent Rayleigh fading and distance-dependent path loss. The solutions are based on accurate approximations we derive for the characteristic function (CF) and the probability density function (PDF) of each user’s signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs). A full-duplex (FD) multiple antenna access point (AP) communicating with single antenna half-duplex (HD) spatially random users to support simultaneous uplink (UL)/downlink (DL) transmissions is investigated. Since FD nodes are inherently constrained by the loopback interference (LI), we study precoding schemes for the AP based on maximum ratio combining (MRC)/maximal ratio transmission (MRT), zero-forcing, and the optimal scheme for UL and DL sum rate maximization using tools from stochastic geometry. In order to shed insights into the systems performance, simple expressions for single antenna/perfect LI cancellation/negligible internode interference cases are also presented. We show that FD precoding at AP improves the UL/DL sum rate and hence a doubling of the performance of the HD mode is achievable. In particular, our results show that these impressive performance gains remain substantially intact even if the LI cancellation is imperfect. Furthermore, relative performance gap between FD and HD modes increases as the number of transmit/receive antennas becomes large, while with the MRC/MRT scheme, increasing the receive antenna number at FD AP, is more beneficial in terms of sum rate than increasing the transmit antenna number. We consider beamformer optimization for user equipment (UE) relaying cooperation in heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs), where the interference from femto cells nearby aggravates the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of a macro UE (MUE). A femto UE acts as a relay over device-to-device (D2D) uplink and forward to the MUE, the composite of desired signal and interference to improve the post SINR of the MUE. The beamformers of the UE relay and MUE collaborate to make a balance between the two signals so that the output signal after multistage maximal-ratio combining (MS-MRC) yields a sufficient post SINR for the desired signal. We first consider the case with a single interfering femto access point (FAP) and show that the beamforming for dual-stage MRC can effectively handle the interference. Then, the idea is generalized to the case of two interfering FAPs with a three-stage MRC. A geodesic geometry view allows us to parameterize the BF design with the angles that the involved channel vectors make. This approach makes the optimization of the BF simpler, reduces the feedback overhead, and provides better insight into the problem at hand. Expressions are derived for the coverage probability and average rate of both multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) and single input multiple output (SIMO) systems in the context of a fractional frequency reuse (FFR) scheme. In particular, given a reuse region of \frac13 (FR3) and a reuse region of 1 (FR1) as well as a signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) threshold Sth, which decides the user assignment to either the FR1 or FR3 regions, we theoretically show that: 1) the optimal choice of S_{th} = T, where T is the target SINR required for ensuring adequate coverage, and 2) the optimal choice of Sth which maximizes the average rate is given by S_{th}= T^{\prime}, where T^{\prime}$ is a function of the path loss exponent, the number of antennas and of the fading parameters. The impact of frequency domain correlation amongst the OFDM sub-bands allocated to the FR1 and FR3 cell-regions is analysed and it is shown that the presence of correlation reduces both the coverage probability and the average throughput of the FFR network. Furthermore, the performance of our FFR-aided MU-MIMO and SIMO systems is compared. Our analysis shows that the (2 $\times$ 2) MU-MIMO system achieves 22.5% higher rate than the (1 $\times$ 3) SIMO system and for lower target SINRs, the coverage probability of a (2 $\times$ 2) MU-MIMO system is comparable to a (1 $\times$ 3) SIMO system.
