Faster-than-Nyquist signaling (FTNS) has already been shown to increase the communication capacity on certain channels such as additive white Gaussian noise and block flat multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleigh fading channels. The following issues, however, remain unresolved: 1) whether FTNS enables a capacity increase in generalized MIMO Rayleigh fading channels that are selective in time, frequency, and space; and 2) how channel selectivities affect the capacity and if present, the FTN capacity gain. To address the issues, this paper firstly investigates the ergodic capacity of MIMO-FTN transmission over triply-selective fading channels. We derive a low-complexity approximate capacity formula and also show how it degenerates in other channel models, such as doubly-selective single-input single-output fading channels, which can be considered as the special cases of triply-selective fading channels. The capacity evaluation results obtained under different channel conditions show that: 1) MIMO-FTN outperforms MIMO-Nyquist in terms of capacity; 2) the FTN gains are nearly consistent, while the FTN gains obtained in the frequency-selective fading channels are slightly higher than those obtained in the flat fading channels. To realize high energy-efficient, high spectrum-efficient, and high-throughput data transmission, a multi-carrier differential chaos shift keying communication system with hybrid index modulation, referred to as HIM-MC-DCSK system, is proposed in this paper. In the HIM-MC-DCSK system, we intelligently integrate the carrier-number-index technique and carrier-index technique into the MC-DCSK modulation in order to significantly boost the transmission efficiency in wireless communication systems. Especially, we use a pair of orthogonal signals to represent the active and inactive subcarriers in the HIM-MC-DCSK system so as to exploit all the subcarriers to transmit information bits. In addition, the theoretical bit-error-rate (BER) expressions of the HIM-MC-DCSK system are derived over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Also, the data rate, spectrum efficiency, energy efficiency, and complexity of the proposed system are carefully analyzed. In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of an uplink (UL) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay network (HSTRN), in which two users communicate with the satellite through a decode-and-forward (DF) relay due to the lack of direct link. To provide a comprehensive yet hitherto unexplored outage analysis framework, we consider a more generalized channel model, i.e., the terrestrial and satellite links, respectively, undergo $\alpha -\mu $ and $\kappa -\mu $ shadowed fadings. Under fixed power allocation (FPA) for both multiple access phase and relaying phase, we firstly study three successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding schemes, of which the first two are refined from existing schemes, while the third one, named as extended SIC (ESIC), is proposed in this paper to satisfy the quality of service (QoS) decoding criterion, which is shown to offer better performances for both users as compared to the former two SIC schemes. We also propose a novel dynamic power allocation (DPA) scheme for the multiple access phase, termed as enhanced DPA (EDPA), to overcome both users’ error floor (EF) issue yet provide better user fairness than the conventional DPA in the literature. We then analyze the exact and asymptotic outage performance for three SIC and the EDPA schemes under the generalized channel setting. It is shown that both the proposed ESIC and EDPA can circumvent the EF issue and moreover, each has its own advantage in terms of the diversity order (DO). Our results also reveal that there exists a trade-off between ESIC and EDPA, since the former requires a premise on users’ targets rates to overcome the EF and once this premise is satisfied, no DO degradation will occur, while the latter does not entail such a premise but may face potential DO degradation. Finally, we present numerical results to verify the theoretical analysis, manifest the impacts of key parameters on the system performance, and demonstrate the advantages of our proposed network over other benchmarks. Different from conventional wired line connections, industrial control through wireless transmission is widely regarded as a promising solution due to its reduced cost, increased long-term reliability, and enhanced reliability. However, mission-critical applications impose stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements that entail ultra-reliability low-latency communications (URLLC). The primary feature of URLLC is that the blocklength of channel codes is short, and the conventional Shannon’s Capacity is not applicable. In this paper, we consider the URLLC in a factory automation (FA) scenario. Due to densely deployed equipment in FA, wireless signal are easily blocked by the obstacles. To address this issue, we propose to deploy intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to create an alternative transmission link, which can enhance the transmission reliability. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis for IRS-aided URLLC-enabled communications in a FA scenario. Both the average data rate (ADR) and the average decoding error probability (ADEP) are derived under finite channel blocklength for seven cases: 1) Rayleigh fading channel; 2) With direct channel link; 3) Nakagami-m fading channel; 4) Imperfect phase alignment; 5) Multiple-IRS case; 6) Rician fading channel; 7) Correlated channels. Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) provides more uniform spectral efficiency (SE) for users (UEs) than cellular technology. The main challenge to achieve the benefits of cell-free massive MIMO is to realize signal processing in a scalable way. In this paper, we consider scalable full-pilot zero-forcing (FZF), partial FZF (PFZF), protective weak PFZF (PWPFZF), and local regularized ZF (LRZF) combining by exploiting channel statistics. We derive closed-form expressions of the uplink SE for FZF, PFZF, and PWPFZF combining with large-scale fading decoding over independent Rayleigh fading channels, taking channel estimation errors and pilot contamination into account. Moreover, we investigate the impact of the number of pilot sequences, antennas per AP, and APs on the performance. Numerical results show that LRZF provides the highest SE. However, PWPFZF is preferable when the number of pilot sequences is large and the number of antennas per AP is small. The reason is that PWPFZF has lower computational complexity and the SE expression can be computed in closed-form. Furthermore, we investigate the performance of PWPFZF combining with fractional power control and the numerical results show that it improves the performance of weak UEs and realizes uniformly good service for all UEs in a scalable fashion. LoRa is a modulation technology for low power wide area networks (LPWAN) with enormous potential in 5G era. However, the performance of LoRa system deteriorates seriously in fading-channel environments. To tackle this problem, in this paper we introduce multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) configuration employing space-time block coding (STBC) schemes into the LoRa system to formulate an STBC-MIMO LoRa system. Then, we investigate the theoretical performance of the proposed system over Rayleigh fading channels. To this end, we derive the distribution of the decision metric for the demodulator in the proposed system. Based on the above distribution, we propose a closed-form approximate BER expression of the proposed system when perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) are considered. Furthermore, we analyze the diversity order and the throughput of the proposed system. The results of the diversity analysis demonstrate that the diversity order of the system in the imperfect CSI scenario with fixed channel estimate error variance is zero. However, in the imperfect CSI scenario with a decreasing channel estimate error variance and the perfect CSI scenario, the system can achieve full diversity. In addition, the results of the throughput analysis show that the throughput of the proposed system is little affected by CSI conditions. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the excellent performance of the proposed system. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has been advocated as a highly promising technology to provide near-perpetual operation to low-powered wireless devices in Internet-of-Things (IoT)-based wireless networks. In this paper, a SWIPT-enhanced cell-free massive MIMO network is proposed. In such a network, a large set of spatially distributed access points (APs) interconnected via a central processing unit (CPU) can collaboratively serve a large number of both energy harvesting mobile stations (MSs) (requiring wireless energy transfer) and conventional MSs (not requiring wireless energy transfer) on the same time-frequency resources. We consider spatially correlated Rician fading channels and the use of different precoding schemes that are based on different channel estimators differing on the assumed knowledge of the line-of-sight component. Mathematically manageable expressions are derived for the harvested energy during the downlink (DL) energy harvesting phase and the achievable spectral and energy efficiencies during the uplink (UL) payload transmission phase. A coupled UL/DL optimization problem is formulated aiming at finding the power control coefficients that maximize the minimum of the weighted achievable UL signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) of all MSs. Extensive numerical results are presented that serve to highlight the existing trade-offs among the achievable spectral and energy efficiencies, the harvested energy, the energy dedicated to UL pilot transmission or the system configuration. In a majority of research on covert communications, knowledge about channel state information (CSI) of main channel and/or warden channel is assumed to be known or partially known. However, a covert user may not afford to perform channel estimation in practice, and acquiring the warden’s CSI is even impossible. In this paper, we investigate covert communications over non-coherent Rayleigh fading channels, in both i.i.d. fast fading and slow fading cases. We observe that the purpose of covert communication in many scenarios is to hide the existence of the sender, not the receiver. Therefore, we allow the receiver to work in full-duplex mode such that it can emit artificial noise (AN) while receiving signals simultaneously. We analyse the achievable covert rates with fixed and varying AN power and show that in both fast and slow fading cases, it is possible to achieve a positive covert rate. For the slow fading case, we further extend the proposed strategy to a multi-user scenario, in which multiple other users share the same spectral resource and cause interference at the warden. The pilot scheme currently used in 5th generation (5G) cellular networks assigns the same set of orthogonal pilot signals to all cells. This results in inter-cell interference, also known as pilot contamination, which can significantly degrade performance, especially in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. To mitigate this interference, we propose a novel Dual Pilot Scheme (DPS) that assigns a slightly modified set of nearly-orthogonal pilot signals. DPS is a general scheme that can be implemented in any wireless communication system, including 5G and beyond. We demonstrate the integration of DPS in a massive MIMO system in both microscopic and macroscopic levels and analytically prove that DPS enables more accurate estimates of the channel state information in the minimum mean-squared error sense, under the independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) and the correlated Rayleigh fading wireless communication channel models. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-empowered communication is one of the promising 6G technologies that allows the conversion of the wireless channel into an intelligent transmit entity by manipulating the impinging waves using man-made surfaces. In this paper, the potential benefits of using RISs are investigated for indoor/outdoor setups and various frequency bands (from sub 6 GHz to millimeter-waves). First, a general system model with a single RIS is considered and the effect of the total number of reflecting elements on the probabilistic distribution of the received signal-to-noise ratio and error performance is investigated under Rician fading. Also for this case, the path loss exponent is analyzed by considering empirical path loss models. Furthermore, transmission models with multiple RISs are developed and analyzed for indoor and outdoor non line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. The conventional RIS selection strategies are also integrated for systems equipped with multiple RISs for the first time. Through extensive simulations, it is demonstrated that the RIS-assisted systems provide promising solutions for indoor/outdoor scenarios at various operating frequencies and exhibit significant results in error performance and achievable data rates even in the presence of system imperfections such as limited range phase adjustment and imperfect channel phase estimation at RISs. The amount of sensitive data, which is transmitted wirelessly will increase with future technologies. This raises many questions about secure data transmission. Besides cryptography, information-theoretic security gained increasing attention over the recent years. Among others, it deals with the problem of secure data transmission on the physical layer to a legitimate receiver (Bob) in the presence of an eavesdropper (Eve). In this work, we investigate upper and lower bounds on the secrecy outage probability for slowly-fading wiretap channels with an arbitrary dependency structure between the fading channels to Bob and Eve. Both cases of absence of channel-state information at the transmitter (CSI-T) and availability of CSI-T of only the main channel to the legitimate receiver are considered. Furthermore, we derive explicit expressions for the upper and lower bounds for Rayleigh fading and compare them to the case of independent channels. The joint distribution of the legitimate and eavesdropper channels has a tremendous impact on the achievable secrecy outage probability. In this paper, we propose a new construction of generalized root protograph (GRP) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes which has a guaranteed diversity order. New hybrid-automatic request with incremental redundancy (H-ARQ-IR) is also proposed to ensure high diversity and rate-compatibility in wireless communication systems, where the GRP LDPC codes are employed along with a method called feedback encoding. The proposed H-ARQ-IR has advantages of low-complexity and near-optimal performance. In order to show its performance behavior, theoretical analysis for the proposed scheme is conducted for the block fading channel. Furthermore, numerical analysis shows that it achieves near maximum diversity order under the belief propagation (BP) decoding with binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation and high-order quadrature amplitude modulations (QAMs). Transmit antenna selection (TAS) is an emerging technology in physical layer security. To provide new insights into the achievable secrecy performance of TAS in practical communication systems, this paper investigates the average secrecy rate (ASR) and secrecy outage probability (SOP) under practical modulation schemes in TAS aided multiple-input multiple-output multiple-antenna eavesdropper (MIMOME) wiretap channels over Rayleigh fading. Particularly, this research concentrates more on the square $M$ -ary quadrature amplitude modulation ($M$ -QAM). Furthermore, in the considered MIMOME channel, a single antenna is selected to transmit the secret message, and selection combining (SC) or maximal-ratio combining (MRC) is utilized at the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper. Based on this system model, novel expressions for the ASR and SOP are formulated to characterize the secrecy performance of the finite-alphabet driven MIMOME channel. Besides exact analysis, an asymptotic analysis is performed using the considered performance metrics in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Theoretical analyses suggest that the asymptotic ASR and SOP converge to finite constants in high SNR regime due to the discrete constellation constraint, and we find that the asymptotic behaviour of discrete inputs differs from that of Gaussian inputs. Furthermore, we derive concise expressions to characterize the rate of convergence (ROC) of the ASR and SOP, respectively. Although the hybrid of cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) promises massive spectral efficiency gains, the type of precoders employed at the access points (APs) impacts the gains. In this paper, we thus comprehensively evaluate the system performance with maximum ratio transmission (MRT), full-pilot zero-forcing (fpZF) and modified regularized ZF (mRZF) precoders. We derive their closed-form sum rate expressions by considering Rayleigh fading channels, the effects of intra-cluster pilot contamination, inter-cluster interference, and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). Our results reveal that this system supports significantly more users simultaneously at the same coherence interval compared to its OMA equivalent. However, intra-cluster pilot contamination and imperfect SIC degrade the system performance when the number of users is low. Moreover, with perfect SIC, mRZF and fpZF significantly outperform MRT. In this paper, we maximize the benefits from the ultra low power wideband sensing approach based on FFT-based 1-bit quantization by addressing the practical limitations to this method. Unlike the conventional architecture that assumes a fully synchronized and coordinated Primary User (PU) network, the proposed system relaxes these limitations by providing an analytical framework for an uncoordinated asynchronous FFT-based 1-bit quantization system. For this system, we analytically derive the sub-band power which is the main parameter for the closed-form expressions representing the false alarm and detection probabilities. Further, improving the system performance through cooperative sensing is considered. While respecting the decision fusion cooperation, the optimum threshold for the generalized FFT-based 1-bit quantization system is derived such that the aggregate error rate is minimized. In addition to its significant power and complexity reduction, the presented analysis expands the use of the FFT-based 1-bit quantization wideband sensing approach in practical deployments. This paper investigates the achievable performance of cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at both the access points (APs) and users. A closed-form expression for the achievable rate is derived, which enables the study of the effects of AP number, antenna number per AP, user number, and ADC resolution on the achievable rate. In addition, a simple asymptotic approximation for the individual user rate is presented, which shows that the user rate is mainly constrained by the ADC resolution at the user. Moreover, we propose an ADC resolution bits allocation scheme aiming at maximizing the sum rate subject to the total ADC resolution bits constraint, which substantially outperforms the equal ADC resolution bits allocation scheme. Furthermore, a max–min power control scheme is proposed, which not only ensures user fairness, but also improves the achievable rate. Joint communication and radio sensing (JCAS) in millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems requires the use of a steerable beam. For analog antenna arrays, a single beam is typically used, which limits the sensing area within the direction of the communication. Multibeam technology can overcome this limitation by separately generating package-level direction-varying sensing subbeams and fixed communication subbeams and then combine them coherently. In this paper, we investigate the optimal combination of the two subbeams and the quantization of the beamforming (BF) vector that generates the combined beam. When either the full channel matrix or only the angle of departure (AoD) of the dominating line-of-sight (LOS) path is known at the transmitter, we derive the closed-form expressions for the optimal combining coefficients that maximize the received communication signal power. For the quantization of the BF vector, we focus on the two-phase-shifter array where two phase shifters are used to represent each BF weight. We propose novel joint quantization methods by combining the codebooks of the two phase shifters. The mean squared quantization error is derived for various quantization methods. This paper investigates the performance of wireless systems that employ finite-blocklength channel codes for transmission and operate under queuing constraints in the form of limitations on buffer overflow or delay violation probabilities. A block fading model, in which fading stays constant in each coherence block and changes independently between blocks, is considered. It is assumed that channel coding is performed over multiple coherence blocks. A simple ARQ scheme with error-free feedback without any delay is considered. The channel coding rate with given maximal error probability is considered as the service rate and is incorporated into the effective capacity formulation, which characterizes the maximum constant arrival rate that can be supported under statistical queuing constraints. Performances of variable-rate and fixed-rate transmissions are studied. The optimum error probability for variable-rate and fixed-rate transmissions is shown to be unique. The limiting performance as the number of blocks increases is characterized. The tradeoffs and the interactions between the throughput, the number of coherence blocks over which channel coding is performed, error probabilities, channel coherence duration, and queuing constraints are identified. Visible light communications (VLC) is an emerging technology with a promise of viable solution to spectrum crunch problem in conventional radio-frequency (RF) bands. In this paper, we consider a downlink multiuser VLC network where users randomly change their location and vertical orientation. In order to increase the spectral efficiency, we consider the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission to serve multiple users simultaneously. In particular, we propose individual and group-based user ordering techniques for NOMA with various user feedback schemes. In order to reduce the computational complexity and link overhead, feedback on the channel quality is proposed to be computed using a mean value of the vertical angle (instead of the exact instantaneous value), as well as the distance information. In addition, a two-bit feedback scheme is proposed for the group-based user scheduling, which relies on both the distance and the vertical angle, and differs from the conventional one-bit feedback of the distance only. The outage probability and sum-rate expressions are derived analytically, which show a very good match with the simulation data. Numerical results verify that the practical feedback scheme with the mean vertical angle achieves a near-optimal sum-rate performance, and the two-bit feedback significantly outperforms the one-bit feedback. In this paper, we study the design of secure communication for time-division duplex multi-cell multi-user massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems with active eavesdropping. We assume that the eavesdropper actively attacks the uplink pilot transmission and the uplink data transmission before eavesdropping the downlink data transmission of the users. We exploit both the received pilot’s and the received data signals for uplink channel estimation. We show analytically that when both the number of transmit antennas and the length of the data vector tend to infinity, the signals of the desired user and the eavesdropper lie in different eigenspaces of the received signal matrix at the base station, provided their signal powers are different. This finding reveals that decreasing (instead of increasing) the desired user’s signal power might be an effective approach to combat a strong active attack from an eavesdropper. Inspired by this observation, we propose a data-aided secure downlink transmission scheme and derive an asymptotic achievable secrecy sum-rate expression for the proposed design. For the special case of a single-cell single-user system with independent and identically distributed fading, the obtained expression reveals that the secrecy rate scales logarithmically with the number of transmit antennas. This is the same scaling law as for the achievable rate of a single-user massive MIMO system in the absence of eavesdroppers. The numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme achieves significant secrecy rate gains compared with alternative approaches based on matched filter precoding with artificial noise generation and null space transmission. This paper introduces circular color shift keying (CSK) constellations in a visible light communications (VLC) system using a camera-based receiver with applications to vehicular communications, where vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications are required to improve the safety of vehicles in high traffic density. The circular CSK constellations are shown to outperform the geometric and IEEE 802.15.7 constellations in terms of bit-error probability. Afterward, the noise at the receiver is investigated and transferred from the spatial domain to an angular noise in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) color domain, where it is shown to behave similarly to a Gaussian distribution. Based on this noise model, a closed-form expression of the bit-error rate (BER) of circular CSK constellations is derived and shown to be accurate for BER ranges corresponding to VLC applications of practical interest. Diversity techniques are also investigated, and interesting differences are noted during the analysis compared to traditional radio frequency (RF) communication scenarios. Finally, the design of a link adaptation approach maximizing the number of bits per transmitted symbol, while meeting a target BER, is proposed. This paper develops novel deep learning-based architectures and design methodologies for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver under the constraint of one-bit complex quantization. Single bit quantization reduces greatly the complexity and power consumption but makes accurate channel estimation and data detection difficult. This is particularly true for multicarrier waveforms that have high peak-to-average power ratio in the time domain and fragile subcarrier orthogonality in the frequency domain. The severe distortion for one-bit quantization typically results in an error floor even at moderately low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) such as 5 dB. For channel estimation (using pilots), we design a novel generative supervised deep neural network that can be trained with a reasonable number of pilots. After channel estimation, a neural network-based receiver—specifically, an autoencoder—jointly learns a precoder and decoder for data symbol detection. Since quantization prevents end-to-end training, we propose a two-step sequential training policy for this model. With synthetic data, our deep learning-based channel estimation can outperform least squares channel estimation for unquantized (full-resolution) OFDM at average SNRs up to 14 dB. In this paper, a distributed cognitive underlay single carrier system is investigated. A secondary users’ network consists of a control unit (CU) and a group of secondary user remote radio heads (S-RRHs). To effectively access the radio spectrum licensed to the primary users, a distributed cyclic delay diversity (dCDD) scheme is employed between the CU and S-RRHs as the transmit diversity scheme. Multiple primary user transmitters (PTXs) are assumed to be located isotropically within the secondary users’ network, so that a mixture of line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (nLoS) paths from the PTXs to the secondary user receiver is considered. In addition, a mixture of LoS and nLoS paths is considered in the secondary users’ network. For a new transmit diversity scheme and channel model, the performance of the secondary users’ network achieved by the dCDD in the presence of isotropically distributed multiple PTXs is investigated. The dCDD enables the CU to use multiple S-RRHs at the same time, so that determining the effects of a different number of S-RRHs in the presence of a new channel model is an open research issue. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. We consider a downlink periodic wireless communications system, where multiple access points cooperatively transmit packets to a number of devices, e.g., actuators in an industrial control system. Each period consists of two phases: an uplink training phase and a downlink data transmission phase. Each actuator must successfully receive its unique packet within a single transmission phase; else, an outage is declared. Such an outage can be caused by two events: a transmission error due to transmission at a rate that the channel cannot actually support or time overflow, where the downlink data phase is too short, given the channel conditions to successfully communicate all the packets. We determine the closed-form expressions for the time overflow probability when there are just two field devices, as well as the transmission error probability for an arbitrary number of devices. In addition, we provide upper and lower bounds on the time overflow probability for an arbitrary number of devices. We propose a novel variable-rate transmission method that eliminates time overflow. Detailed system-level simulations are used to identify system design guidelines, such as the optimal amount of training time, as well as for benchmarking the proposed system design versus non-cooperative cellular, cooperative fixed-rate, and cooperative relaying. The maturing massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) literature has provided asymptotic limits for the rate and energy efficiency (EE) of maximal ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission (MRC-MRT) relaying on two-way relays (TWRs) using the amplify-and-forward (AF) principle. Most of these studies consider time-division duplexing and a fixed number of users. To fill the gap in the literature, we analyze the MRC-MRT precoder performance of an $N$ -antenna AF massive MIMO TWR, which operates in a frequency-division duplex mode to enable two-way communication between $2M=\lfloor N^{\alpha }\rfloor $ single-antenna users, with $\alpha \in [0,1$), divided equally into two groups of $M$ users. We assume that the relay has realistic imperfect uplink channel state information (CSI), and that quantized downlink CSI is fed back by the users relying on $B\geq 1$ bits per-user per relay antenna. We prove that for such a system with $\alpha \in [0,1$), the MRC-MRT precoder asymptotically cancels the multi-user interference (MUI) when the supremum and infimum of large-scale fading parameters are strictly non-zero and finite, respectively. Furthermore, its per-user pairwise error probability converges to that of an equivalent AWGN channel, as both $N$ and the number of users $2M=\lfloor N^{\alpha }\rfloor $ tend to infinity, with a relay power scaling of $P_{r}=({2ME_{r}}/{N})$ and $E_{r}$ being a constant. We also derive upper bounds for both the per-user rate and EE. We analytically show that the quantized MRC-MRT precoder requires as few as $B=2$ bits to yield a BER, EE, and per-user rate close to the respective unquantized counterparts. In this paper, we consider a radio-frequency identification (RFID) backscatter system with two scenarios: single input multiple output (SIMO) and multiple input single output (MISO). We investigate the impact of channel correlation between the forward and backscatter links on the symbol error rate (SER), and we compare the performance of SIMO and MISO RFID systems with maximum ratio combining reception over arbitrarily correlated Nakagami- $m$ fading channels. In order to gain an insight for the system design, closed-form expressions for the asymptotic SER and an upper bound are derived for $M$ -ary phase-shift keying and quadrature amplitude modulation. The diversity order in the fully correlated cases, revealed from these expressions, is half of that in the partially correlated and uncorrelated cases. In this paper, the problem of downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) over slow fading channels is studied. Full-channel state information (CSI) is assumed at the receivers, while only the statistical CSI is assumed to be available at the transmitter. A novel lattice-partition-based scheme is proposed which, according to statistical CSI, employs discrete inputs from appropriately designed constellations carved from a lattice, rather than continuous Gaussian inputs as used in most existing works. Theoretical analysis shows that for any outage probability smaller than 63.21%, which covers almost all the cases of practical interest, the proposed scheme with single-user decoding, i.e., without successive interference cancellation (SIC) is able to approach the NOMA outage capacity region within a constant gap, independent of the signal-to-noise ratio, and the number of users. Simulation results fortify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme by showing that the approach without SIC can achieve outage rates that are very close to the outage capacity region and the gap becomes even smaller when SIC is employed. This paper investigates the performance of a dual-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relaying-aided land mobile satellite communication over Shadowed-Rician (SR) fading channels. A practical model for the satellite relaying system is first developed, where the impacts of satellite multi-beam antenna, radio propagation loss, and random shadowing are taken into account. Next, by assuming that the multi-beam satellite suffers from hardware impairments (HIs) and is perturbed by interference signals, we derive an equivalent end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise-and-distortion-ratio of the system, and justify that the maximum ratio transmission at the source and the maximum ratio combining at the destination are the optimal transmit-receive beamforming schemes on the proposed HIs model. Then, closed-form expressions for the probability density function (PDF) of the sum of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) squared SR random variables in the case of integer and rational Nakagami- $m$ fading parameters are derived. Based on the derived PDF, new analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and average throughput are obtained in the presence of HIs and interference. Moreover, the asymptotic OP and average throughput at high signal-to-noise ratio are investigated to reveal the achievable diversity order of the system. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is characterized by the ambiguous role of multi-user interference. In short, the beneficial effect of multi-user interference on RF energy harvesting is obtained at the price of a reduced link capacity, thus originating nontrivial tradeoffs between the achievable information rate and the harvestable energy. Arguably, in indoor environments, this tradeoff might be affected by the propagation loss due to blockage objects like walls. Hence, a couple of fundamental questions arise. How much must the network elements be densified to counteract the blockage attenuation? Is blockage always detrimental on the achievable rate-energy tradeoff? In this paper, we analyze the performance of an indoor multiple-input multiple-output SWIPT-enabled network in the attempt to shed a light of those questions. The effects of the obstacles are examined with the help of a stochastic geometry approach in which the locations of energy sources (also referred to as power heads) are distributed by using a Poisson point process and walls are generated through a Manhattan Poisson line process. The stochastic behavior of the signal attenuation and the multi-user interference is studied to obtain the joint complementary cumulative distribution function of information rate and harvested power. Theoretical results are validated through Monte Carlo simulations. Eventually, the rate-energy tradeoff is presented as a function of the density of walls to emphasize the cross-dependences between the deployment of the network elements and the macro parameters characterizing the topology of the venue. In this treatise, first of all, we conceive a generic multiple-symbol differential sphere detection (MSDSD) solution for both single- and multiple-antenna-based noncoherent schemes in both uncoded and coded scenarios, where the high-mobility aeronautical Ricean fading features are taken into account. The bespoke design is the first MSDSD solution in the open literature that is applicable to the generic differential space-time modulation (DSTM) for transmission over Ricean fading. In the light of this development, the recently developed differential spatial modulation and its diversity counterpart of differential space-time block coding using index shift keying are specifically recommended for aeronautical applications owing to their low-complexity single-RF and finite-cardinality features. Moreover, we further devise a noncoherent decision-feedback differential detection and a channel-state information estimation aided coherent detection, which also take into account the same Ricean features. Finally, the advantages of the proposed techniques in different scenarios lead us to propose for the aeronautical systems to adaptively: 1) switch between coherent and non-coherent schemes; 2) switch between single- and multiple-antenna-based schemes as well as; and 3) switch between high-diversity and high-throughput DSTM schemes. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is currently considered as a promising technology for the next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, the error rate performance of NOMA systems is investigated over Nakagami- $m$ fading channels, while considering imperfect successive interference cancelation. In particular, this paper focuses on the pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis, where exact PEP expressions are derived to characterize the performance of all users under different fading conditions. The obtained PEP expressions are then used to derive an exact union bound on the bit error rate (BER). Through the derived PEP expressions, the asymptotic PEP analysis is presented to investigate the maximum achievable diversity gain of NOMA users. Moreover, using the derived BER bound, the power allocation problem for all users in NOMA systems is considered under average power and users BER constraints, which allows realizing the full potential of NOMA. This paper investigates the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) networks. By utilizing a stochastic geometry model, a new 3-D UAV framework for providing wireless service to randomly roaming NOMA users has been proposed. In an effort to evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, we derive analytical expressions for the outage probability and the ergodic rate of MIMO-NOMA enhanced UAV networks. We examine tractable upper bounds for the whole proposed framework, with deriving asymptotic results for scenarios that transmit power of interference sources being proportional or being fixed to the UAV. For obtaining more insights for the proposed framework, we investigate the diversity order and high signal-to-noise slope of MIMO-NOMA assisted UAV networks. Our results confirm that: 1) Outage probability of NOMA enhanced UAV networks is affected to a large extent by the targeted transmission rates and power allocation factors of NOMA users and 2) For the case that the interference power is proportional to the UAV power, there are error floors for the outage probabilities. Link adaptation (LA) schemes maximize average spectral efficiency (ASE) using accurate channel state information (CSI) and knowledge of signal to noise ratio (SNR) distribution. In practical systems, partial CSI is available at the transmitter through feedback of modulation and coding scheme index, often known as channel quality indicator (CQI). However, parameters of SNR distribution (${\Theta }$) are not known or only assumed to be known. We propose two LA schemes, for execution at the receiver and transmitter, respectively, each without prior knowledge about ${\Theta }$. In the receiver centric schemes, parametric estimation of SNR distribution is performed using unquantized SNR samples. In the transmitter centric scheme, we estimate ${\Theta }$ from CQI samples using an iterative joint quantization-estimation algorithm. These parametric estimates form long-term SNR distribution, which is used to compute SNR switching thresholds. Using these thresholds, rate and power adaptation decisions are made based on instantaneous SNR. We have derived the maximum-likelihood estimator and Cramer–Rao lower bound for the proposed estimator using CQI feedback for Nakagami- $m$ fading channels and demonstrate that near optimal ASE can be achieved while using the proposed schemes as in an ideal scenario, where perfect knowledge about CSI and SNR distribution are available a priori. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the Viterbi decoding algorithm with/without Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) over a Rician flat fading channel with unlimited interleaving. We show that the decay rate of the average bit error probability with respect to the bit energy to noise ratio is at least equal to $d_{f}$ at high-bit energy to noise ratio for both cases (with ARQ and without ARQ), where $d_{f}$ is the free distance of the convolutional code. The Yamamoto-Itoh flag helps to reduce the average bit error probability by a factor of $4^{d_{f}}$ with a negligible retransmission rate. We also prove an interesting result that the average bit error probability decays exponentially fast with respect to the Rician factor for any fixed bit energy per noise ratio. We present nonasymptotic upper and lower bounds on the maximum coding rate achievable when transmitting short packets over a Rician memoryless block-fading channel for a given requirement on the packet error probability. We focus on the practically relevant scenario in which there is no a priori channel state information available at the transmitter or at the receiver. An upper bound built upon the min–max converse is compared with two lower bounds: the first one relies on a noncoherent transmission strategy in which the fading channel is not estimated explicitly at the receiver and the second one employs pilot-assisted transmission (PAT) followed by maximum-likelihood channel estimation and scaled mismatched nearest-neighbor decoding at the receiver. Our bounds are tight enough to unveil the optimum number of diversity branches that a packet should span so that the energy per bit required to achieve a target packet error probability is minimized, for a given constraint on the code rate and the packet size. Furthermore, the bounds reveal that noncoherent transmission is more energy efficient than PAT, even when the number of pilot symbols and their power is optimized. For example, in Rayleigh fading, for the case when a coded packet of 168 symbols is transmitted using a channel code of rate 0.48-bits/channel use, over a block-fading channel with block size equal to eight symbols, PAT requires an additional 1.2 dB of energy per information bit to achieve a packet error probability of 10−3 compared with a suitably designed noncoherent transmission scheme. Finally, we devise a PAT scheme based on punctured tail-biting quasi-cyclic codes and ordered-statistics decoding, whose performance is close (1-dB gap at 10−3 packet error probability) to the ones predicted by our PAT lower bound. Multi-connectivity (MCo) is considered to be a key strategy for enabling reliable transmissions and enhanced data rates in fifth-generation mobile networks, as it provides multiple links from source to destination. In this paper, we quantify the communication performance of MCo in terms of outage probability and throughput. For doing so, we establish a simple, yet accurate analytical framework at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), in which the number of links, the spectral efficiency, the path loss, and the SNR are incorporated, giving new insights into the potentials of MCo as compared with the single-connectivity (SCo). These are our main contributions: 1) finding the exact coding gain of the outage probability for parallel block-fading channels; 2) quantifying the performance improvement of MCo over SCo in terms of SNR gain; and 3) comparing optimal and suboptimal combining algorithms for MCo at the receiver side, namely joint decoding, selection combining, and maximal-ratio combining, also in terms of SNR gain. In addition, we apply our analytical framework to real field channel measurements and thereby illustrate the potential of MCo to achieve high reliability and high data rates in real cellular networks. We carry out a theoretical analysis of the uplink (UL) of a massive MIMO system with per-user channel correlation and Rician fading, using two processing approaches. First, we examine the linear-minimum-mean-square-error receiver under training-based imperfect channel estimates. Second, we propose a statistical combining technique that is more suitable in environments with strong line-of-sight (LoS) components. We derive closed-form asymptotic approximations of the UL spectral efficiency (SE) attained by each combining scheme in single and multi-cell settings, as a function of the system parameters. These expressions are insightful in how different factors such as LoS propagation conditions and pilot contamination impact the overall system performance. Furthermore, they are exploited to determine the optimal number of training symbols, which is shown to be of significant interest at low Rician factors. The study and numerical results substantiate that stronger LoS signals lead to better performances, and under such conditions, the statistical combining entails higher SE gains than the conventional receiver. This paper develops an innovative approach to the modeling and analysis of downlink cellular networks with device-to-device (D2D) transmissions. The analytical embodiment of the signal-to-noise and-interference ratio analysis in general fading channels is unified due to the H-transform theory, a taxonomy never considered before in stochastic geometry-based cellular network modeling and analysis. The proposed framework has the potential, due to versatility of the Fox’s H functions, of significantly simplifying the cumbersome analysis procedure and representation of D2D and cellular coverage, while subsuming those previously derived for all the known simple and composite fading models. By harnessing its tractability, the developed statistical machinery is employed to launch an investigation into the optimal design of coexisting D2D and cellular communications. We propose novel coverage-aware power control combined with opportunistic access control to maximize the area spectral efficiency (ASE) of D2D communications. Simulation results substantiate performance gains achieved by the proposed optimization framework in terms of cellular communication coverage probability, average D2D transmit power, and the ASE of D2D communications under different fading models and link- and network-level dynamics. This is a sequel of our previous work on characterization of maximum sum rate of slotted Aloha networks. By extending the analysis to incorporate the capacity-achieving receiver structure, successive interference cancellation (SIC), this paper aims to identify the rate loss due to random access. Specifically, two representative SIC receivers are considered, i.e., ordered SIC, where packets are decoded in a descending order of their received power, and unordered SIC, where packets are decoded in a random order. The maximum sum rate and the corresponding optimal parameter setting including the transmission probability and the information encoding rate in both cases are obtained as the functions of the mean received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The comparison to the capture model shows that the gains are significant only with the ordered SIC at moderate values of the mean received SNR $\rho $. With a large $\rho $ , the rate gap diminishes, and they all have the same high-SNR slope of $e^{-1}$ , which is far below that of the ergodic sum capacity of fading channels. The effect of multipacket reception (MPR) on the sum rate performance is also studied by comparing the MPR receivers including SIC and the capture model to the classical collision model. This paper introduces a time-domain nondata-aided maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation of Doppler frequency for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) over doubly selective fading channels with the Clarke–Jakes–Doppler spectrum. The proposed approach adopts the repetitive signal structure of OFDM, such as the cyclic prefix, which can be used for synchronization purpose. The originally derived ML estimation results in a high computational cost; therefore, after gaining insights into the log-likelihood function, we further design an algorithm with reduced complexity. The proposed algorithm only has a complexity $\sim O(QN_{d})$ , where $Q$ and $N_{d}$ denote the numbers of repetitive parts and samples in a repetitive part, respectively. In contrast to conventional works based on (data aided) channel estimates and/or assuming that channels are flat fading, the proposed method employs the cyclostationary feature of received signals and is not sensitive to channel estimation error and unknown channel phases. Furthermore, the Cramér–Rao lower bounds of the Doppler frequency estimate over nonline-of-sight (NLOS) and line-of-sight multipath fading channels are analyzed. This paper presents the optimal power control policies maximizing the effective capacity achieved with arbitrary input distributions subject to an average power constraint and quality of service (QoS) requirements. The analysis leads to simplified expressions for the optimal power control strategies in the low power regime and two limiting cases, i.e., extremely stringent QoS constraints and vanishing QoS constraints. In the low power regime, the energy efficiency (EE) performance with the constant-power scheme is also determined by characterizing both the minimum energy per bit and wideband slope for arbitrary input signaling and general fading distributions. Subsequently, the results are specialized to Nakagami- $m$ and Rician fading channels. Also, tradeoff between the effective capacity and EE is studied by determining the optimal power control scheme that maximizes the effective capacity subject to constraints on the minimum required EE and average transmission power. Circuit power consumption is explicitly considered in the EE formulation. Through numerical results, the performance comparison between constant-power and optimal power control schemes for different signal constellations and Gaussian signals is carried out. A noncoherent two-way relaying system is developed using physical-layer network coding for improved throughput over conventional relaying in a fading channel. Energy-efficient noncoherent operation is achieved using multitone frequency shift keying (FSK). A novel soft-output demodulator is developed for the relay, and corresponding achievable exchange rates are found for Rayleigh fading and AWGN channels. Bit-error rate performance approaching the achievable rate is realized using a capacity-approaching channel code and a receiver architecture, which iterates between demodulation and channel decoding. Iterative decoding is performed feeding information back from the channel decoder to the demodulator. In addition, the error-rate performance is made to approach the achievable rate more closely by optimizing LDPC codes for this system. The energy efficiency improvement obtained by increasing the modulation order is more dramatic for the proposed physical-layer network coding scheme than it is for a conventional point-to-point system. Using optimized LDPC codes, the bit-error rate performance is improved by as much as 1.1 dB over a widely known standardized LDPC code, and comes to within 0.7 dB of the limit corresponding to the achievable rate. Throughout this paper, the performance for physical-layer network coding is compared with conventional network coding. Unique word- (UW-) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a new multicarrier technique that is shown to be superior to the cyclic prefix- (CP-) OFDM system in terms of bit-error-rate performance in fading channels. Furthermore, in the literature, it is shown by simulations that UW-OFDM has a considerably lower out-of-band (OOB) radiation compared with CP-OFDM. In this paper, we derive an analytical expression to investigate the spectral characteristics of UW-OFDM to be able to determine the effect of the different system parameters on the OOB radiation. In addition, we include in our analysis the effects of the interpolation filter and the unique word. We show that the OOB radiation in UW-OFDM is mainly determined by the number of non-modulated subcarriers reserved as the guard band, and the ratio of the UW sequence length to the number of subcarriers. By increasing either of these two parameters, we show that we can suppress the OOB radiation to any amount. Incremental relaying is a spectral-efficient relaying approach which introduces itself as one of the possible solutions to the spectrum scarcity problem for future generations of cellular communications systems. In this paper, we study threshold amplify-and-forward incremental relaying for correlated fading channels, i.e., fading channels for which the channel gain amplitude varies during the time interval of a block transmission; however, the variation occurs in a correlating fashion. From this aspect, these channels are different from both block-fading and fast-fading channels. Due to the correlating nature of the channels, it is possible to compress channel state information (CSI) sequences and employ the compressed CSI sequences as side information to carefully select the bits transmitted by the relay. This idea is already employed in previous works to increase the spectral efficiency; however, those works consider block-fading channels and also assume maximal ratio combining (MRC) at receiver. In case of MRC, explicit expressions for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exist, which enable packet error rate analysis by aid of Moment Generating Functions of the SNR. However, to apply MRC, the receiver requires all channel gains (including source-relay channel gain). In case of correlated channels, communicating all real-valued channel gains, requires a large overhead. This fact renders applicability of MRC for correlated channels. We apply the more practical Equal-Gain Combining method. We derive series approximations for symbol error rate, given M-QAM and MPSK modulations, and assuming Nakagami- $m$ fading channels. We also analyze the spectral efficiency by assuming Markov models for the channels. We compare the spectral efficiency in case of correlated and fast-fading channels and show that, unlike fast-fading channels, correlated fading channels allow for a spectrally efficient scheme. In this paper, we study the performance of a downlink non-orthogonal multiple access-based cooperative relay system with a single relay over Nakagami- $m$ fading channels, where both decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) protocols are considered. We assume that only statistical channel state information is available to the system and used to determine the decoding order of cell-edge users’ data. For DF relaying, both ergodic sum rate and outage probability are solved in closed form. For AF relaying, closed-form asymptotic ergodic sum rate and outage probability are provided. Numerical results verify the accuracy of the analysis and demonstrate that the DF protocol significantly outperforms the AF one in terms of ergodic sum rate even the channel’s near–far effect weakens. In this paper, we consider a point-to-point multi-input multi-output wireless-powered communication system, where the source S is powered by a dedicated power beacon (PB) with multiple antennas. Employing the time splitting protocol, the energy constrained source S first harvests energy through the radio-frequency signals sent by the PB and then uses this energy to transmit information to the destination D. Unlike several prior works, we assume that the energy transfer link is subjected to Rician fading, which is a real fading environment, due to relatively short range power transfer distance and the existence of a strong line of sight path. We present a comprehensive analysis of the achievable ergodic capacity in two scenarios, depending on the availability of channel state information (CSI) at PB, namely, the absence of CSI and partial CSI. For the former case, equal power allocation is used, while for the later one, energy beamforming is used to enhance the energy transfer efficiency. For both the cases, closed-form expressions for the upper and lower bounds of the ergodic capacity are derived. Furthermore, the optimal time split is discussed, and the capacity in the low and high signal-to-noise ratio regimes is studied through simple closed-form expressions. Numerical results and simulations are provided to validate the theoretical analysis. The results show that the Rician factor $K$ has a significant impact on the ergodic capacity performance, and this impact strongly depends on the availability of the CSI at the PB. In this paper, we derive the data-aided error vector magnitude (EVM) in an interference limited system when both the desired channel and interferers experience independent and nonidentically distributed $\kappa - \mu $ shadowed fading. Then, it is analytically shown that the EVM is equal to the square root of number of interferers when the desired channel and interferers do not experience fading. Furthermore, the EVM is derived in the presence of interference and noise, when the desired channel experiences $\kappa - \mu $ shadowed fading and the interferers experience independent and identical Nakagami fading. This paper investigates a distributed cyclic delay diversity (CDD) transmission scheme for cyclic-prefixed single carrier systems in non-identically and identically distributed frequency selective fading channels. The distinguishable feature of the proposed scheme lies in providing a transmit diversity gain while reducing the burden of estimating the channel state information, which is a challenging task in distributed and cooperative systems. To effectively use the distributed CDD scheme at the transmitters, two sufficient conditions are derived to eliminate the intersymbol interference at the receiver and leveraged to convert the multi-input single-output channel into a single-input single-output channel. These conditions allow the system to achieve the maximum diversity for frequency selective fading channels at a full rate. To achieve this maximum diversity, a fixed number of CDD transmitters are selected based on the channel conditions, symbol block size, and maximum time dispersion of the channel, and a new two-stage transmission mode is proposed. Based on the distributed CDD and the proposed selection schemes, a new expression for the signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver is obtained with the aid of order statistics, and then closed-form expressions for the outage probability and average symbol error rate (ASER) are derived. As far as the identically distributed frequency selective fading channel model is concerned, the achievable maximum diversity gain is proved, with the aid of asymptotic analysis, to be equal to the product of the total number of transmitters in the system and the number of multipath components.
