This paper considers the finite-order filter design problem for the source and multiple full-duplex (FD) relays in a cooperative communication system under frequency-selective fading channels. The goal is to optimize the source and relay filters such that the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of minimum mean-squared error decision-feedback equalizer (MMSE-DFE) can be maximized. The resultant design problem is very difficult since we need to deal with self interference (SI), inter-relay interference (IRI), and inter-symbol interference (ISI) at the same time. Novel designs are then proposed to overcome the difficulty in this work. Transforming the signals into the frequency domain and using some optimization techniques, we first theoretically derive the power spectrum of the source filter and the spectrums of the relay filters. Then, the finite-order design is developed to approach the derived spectrums. Based on the weighted least-square (WLS) criterion, the Steiglitz-McBride method is exploited to obtain the filter coefficients in finite lengths. Numerical results demonstrated that complete removal of SI may not be a good strategy; preserving a certain amount of SI at each relay instead provides better SINR performance. This paper investigates the performance of a new framework for low-outage downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) using a coordinated direct and relay transmission (CDRT) scheme with direct links to both the near-user (NU) and the far-user (FU). Both amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relays are considered. In this framework, the NU combines the signals from base-station and relay at each stage of the successive interference cancellation (SIC) to attain good outage performance. For both NU and FU, the expressions for outage probability and throughput are derived in closed form. We also derive the high-SNR expressions for the outage probability to demonstrate that with the proposed framework, both users harness a diversity of two without feedback bits (this is the only framework to achieve this). We demonstrate that the choice of power allocation coefficient and target symbol rates is crucial to maximizing the NU throughput while ensuring a desired target FU throughput. We demonstrate that CDRT with the proposed framework outperforms known schemes in terms of outage probability, sum throughput, and energy efficiency. Moreover, we also show that optimal rate selection is important to maximize the energy efficiency. Monte Carlo simulations validate the accuracy of the derived analytical expressions. In this work, we provide a framework analysis of dual-hop hybrid Millimeter Wave Radio Frequency (RF)/Free Space Optical (FSO) MIMO relaying system. The source is equipped with multiple antennas and employs conjugate beamforming while the destination consists of multiple apertures with selection combining. The system also consists of a relay operating at amplify-and-forward mode. The RF channels are subject to Nakagami-m fading while the optical links experience the Málaga distribution. In addition, we introduce the impairments to the relay and receiver. In fact, the relay is impaired by the High Power Amplifier (HPA) nonlinearities while the receiver suffers from the In phase and Quadrature Imbalance. Moreover, we assume two types of HPA nonlinearities impairments called Soft Envelope Limiter (SEL) and Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA). Closed-forms of the outage probability, the bit error probability, and the ergodic capacity are derived. Capitalizing on these performances, we derive the high SNR asymptotes to unpack insightful metrics such as the diversity gain. This paper investigates the fundamental covert rate performance in a wireless relaying system consisting of a source-destination pair, a full-duplex (FD) relay and a warden, where the relay can work at either the FD mode or the half-duplex (HD) mode. We first provide theoretical modeling for the instantaneous/average covert rate when the system works solely under the FD mode or HD mode, and then explore the corresponding optimal transmit power control of relay for the covert rate maximization. For an improvement of covert rate, we further propose a joint FD/HD mode that flexibly switches between the FD and HD modes depending on channel state of the relay self-interference channel. Under the joint FD/HD mode, we also examine the related problems of theoretical modeling for covert rate and optimal transmit power control of relay for covert rate maximization. When there exists a malicious attacker in the network, we need to be careful of eavesdropping and contamination. This problem is crucial for network communication when the network is realized by a partially trusted relay of quantum key distribution. We discuss the asymptotic rate in a linear network with the secrecy and robustness conditions when the above type of attacker exists. Within the framework of 5G, blockage effects occurring in the mmWave band are critical. Previous works describe the effects of blockages in isolated and multiple links for simple blocking objects, modeled with mathematical tools such as stochastic geometry and random shape theory. Our study uses these tools to characterize a scenario with $N$ links, including the possible correlation among them in terms of blocking for several models of blocking objects. We include numerical evaluations highlighting that assuming independence among the links’ blocking elements is a too-brief simplification and does not accurately describe the real scenario. This paper also applies the formulation developed for the case of $N$ links to optimize the relay positioning in mmWave cells for coverage enhancement, that is, to minimize the communication failure probability. In this paper, we investigate the application of the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique into the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided relay networks. Specifically, we first incorporate the NOMA protocol with the decode-and-forward (DF) relay protocol to enhance the performance of the cell edge users in a macrocell network. Theoretical analysis indicates that the NOMA-DF-relay protocol outperforms the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based DF-relay protocol in terms of data rate. To fully exploit the advantages of the proposed protocol, we formulate a joint UAV height optimization, channel allocation, and power allocation problem with the objective to maximize the total data rate of the cell edge users under the coverage of the UAV. For solving the formulated problem effectively, we first analyze its property and employ the golden section method to propose a general framework to obtain the optimal height of the UAV. Then, we design a low-complexity iterative algorithm to solve the joint channel-and-power allocation problem based on the matching theory and the Lagrangian dual decomposition technique. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the NOMA-DF-relay protocol is superior to the OMA-DF-relay protocol even when the system parameters are not optimized, and the proposed algorithms can further significantly improve the network performance in comparison with the other schemes. Although the use of coordinated direct and relay transmission (CDRT) in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can extend the coverage, its duplicated transmission reduces the spectrum efficiency (SE) of NOMA. To improve the SE, we propose a spectrum-efficient scheme for NOMA-based CDRT over Nakagami- $m$ fading channels. In this scheme, the base station (BS) connects with a cell-center user (CCU) directly while communicating with a cell-edge user (CEU) via a relay and the CCU. Then, the relay and the CCU use network coding to process and retransmit the signals sent by the BS first and the CEU later. Finally, the BS and the relay simultaneously broadcast downlink signals. We derive the closed-form expressions for the average SE, the user fairness index and the energy efficiency (EE) as well as the asymptotic average SE using both perfect and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). In this paper, performance analysis of a relay based hybrid free space optical and radio frequency (FSO/RF) communication system is achieved by calculating outage probability. Some advanced concepts like hybrid spatial modulation (HSM), transmit source selection (TSS) and HSM along with TSS for such hybrid systems are proposed for the first time. These cooperative systems employ decode and forward (DF) scheme at the relay. The performance of these schemes are compared with the existing ones analytically and validated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based cognitive radio (CR) networks have recently emerged as a promising solution to enhance the spectral efficiency and massive connectivity problems. In this paper, we investigate the error rate performance of relay-assisted NOMA with partial relay selection in an underlay cognitive radio network. In this setup, $K$ relays are used to assist in transmission between secondary NOMA users and a secondary base station (SBS), where the relay (R) with the strongest link with the SBS is selected to amplify-and-forward (AF) its received signals to the secondary receivers. We derive an accurate approximation for the pairwise error probability (PEP) of the secondary users with imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). Subsequently, the derived PEP expression is utilized to deduce a union bound, which is considered as an upper bound on the bit error rate (BER). We further formulate an optimization problem to calculate the optimum power coefficients that minimize the derived union bound. Numerical and Monte Carlo simulation results are presented to corroborate the derived analytical expressions and give some useful insights into the error rate performance of each user. We consider a multi-pair two-way full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward relaying, where multiple FD multi-input multi-output (MIMO) users exchange information via a shared FD massive MIMO relay. We derive a closed-form spectral efficiency (SE) lower-bound for maximal-ratio combining/maximal-ratio transmission relay processing considering spatially correlated relay and user antennas, which most of the existing works have ignored. The derived SE lower-bound is applicable for arbitrary number of relay antennas, and simplifies to the following results available in the literature i) the asymptotic SE for number of relay antennas tending to infinity; and ii) the SE lower-bound with independent relay antennas and single-antenna users. We use this SE lower-bound to maximize the non-convex SE, which is of matrix fractional form. We optimize SE by approximating it as concave-convex function, and then by applying matrix quadratic transformation. We numerically validate the SE lower-bound for various system configurations and also characterize their performance for different spatial correlation and interference values. This paper investigates the impact of relay selection (RS) on the performance of cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), where relays are capable of working in either full-duplex (FD) or half-duplex (HD) mode. A number of relays (i.e., $K$ relays) are uniformly distributed within the disc. A pair of RS schemes are considered insightfully: 1) single-stage RS (SRS) scheme; and 2) two-stage RS (TRS) scheme. In order to characterize the performance of these two RS schemes, new closed-form expressions for both exact and asymptotic outage probabilities are derived. Based on analytical results, the diversity orders achieved by the pair of RS schemes for FD/HD cooperative NOMA are obtained. Our analytical results reveal that: 1) the FD-based RS schemes obtain a zero diversity order, which is due to the influence of loop interference at the relay; and 2) the HD-based RS schemes are capable of achieving a diversity order of $K$ , which is equal to the number of relays. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that: 1) the FD-based RS schemes have better outage performance than HD-based RS schemes in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region; 2) as the number of relays increases, the pair of RS schemes considered are capable of achieving the lower outage probability; and 3) the outage behaviors of FD/HD-based NOMA SRS/TRS schemes are superior to that of random RS and orthogonal multiple access based RS schemes. In this paper, we propose a dual-hop radio-frequency (RF)/free-space optical system with multiple relays employing the decode-and-forward and amplify-and-forward with a fixed gain relaying scheme. The RF channels are subject to a Rayleigh distribution while the optical links experience a unified fading model emcopassing the atmospheric turbulence that follows the Málaga distribution (or also called the \mathcal M -distribution), the atmospheric path loss, and the pointing error. Partial relay selection with outdated channel state information is proposed to select the candidate relay to forward the signal to the destination. At the reception, the detection of the signal can be achieved following either heterodyne or intensity modulation and direct detection. Many previous attempts neglected the impact of the hardware impairments and assumed ideal hardware. This assumption makes sense for low data rate systems but it would no longer be valid for high data rate systems. In this paper, we propose a general model of hardware impairment to get insight into quantifying its effects on the system performance. We will demonstrate that the hardware impairments have small impact on the system performance for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but it can be destructive at high SNR values. Furthermore, analytical expressions and upper bounds are derived for the outage probability and ergodic capacity while the symbol error probability is obtained through the numerical integration method. Capitalizing on these metrics, we also derive the high SNR asymptotes to get valuable insight into the system gains, such as the diversity and the coding gains. In this paper, we study the performance of a downlink non-orthogonal multiple access-based cooperative relay system with a single relay over Nakagami- $m$ fading channels, where both decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) protocols are considered. We assume that only statistical channel state information is available to the system and used to determine the decoding order of cell-edge users’ data. For DF relaying, both ergodic sum rate and outage probability are solved in closed form. For AF relaying, closed-form asymptotic ergodic sum rate and outage probability are provided. Numerical results verify the accuracy of the analysis and demonstrate that the DF protocol significantly outperforms the AF one in terms of ergodic sum rate even the channel’s near–far effect weakens. In addition, the DF protocol exhibits better outage performance than the AF one at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), though the superiority becomes negligible with the increasing SNR. We study the maximum achievable rate of a two-hop amplified-and-forward (AF) relaying millimeter-wave (mm-wave) system, where two AF relaying schemes, i.e., half-duplex (HD) and full-duplex (FD) are discussed. By considering the two-ray mm-wave channel and the Gaussian-type directional antenna, jointly, the impacts of the beamwidth and the self-interference coefficient on maximum achievable rates are investigated. Results show that, under a sum-power constraint, the rate of FD-AF mm-wave relaying outperforms its HD counterpart only when antennas with narrower beamwidth and smaller self-interference coefficient are applied. However, when the sum-power budget is sufficiently high or the beamwidth of directional antenna is sufficiently small, direct transmission becomes the best strategy, rather than the AF relaying schemes. For both relaying schemes, we show that the rates of both AF relaying schemes scale as \mathcal O(\min \lbrace \theta m^{-1},\theta m^{-2}\rbrace ) with respect to beamwidth \theta _ m , and the rate of FD-AF relaying scales as \mathcal O(\mu ^-(1/2)) with respect to self-interference coefficient $ \mu $ . Also, we show that ground reflections may significantly affect the performance of mm-wave communications, constructively or destructively. In this paper, a novel cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system is proposed, where one near user is employed as decode-and-forward relaying switching between full-duplex (FD) and half-duplex (HD) mode to help a far user. Two representative cooperative relaying scenarios are investigated insightfully. The first scenario is that no direct link exists between the base station (BS) and far user. The second scenario is that the direct link exists between the BS and far user. To characterize the performance of potential gains brought by the FD NOMA in two considered scenarios, three performance metrics outage probability, ergodic rate, and energy efficiency are discussed. More particularly, we derive new closed-form expressions for both exact and asymptotic outage probabilities as well as delay-limited throughput for two NOMA users. Based on the derived results, the diversity orders achieved by users are obtained. We confirm that the use of direct link overcomes zero diversity order of far NOMA user inherent to FD relaying. In addition, we derive new closed-form expressions for asymptotic ergodic rates. Based on these, the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slopes of two users for FD NOMA are obtained. Simulation results demonstrate that: 1) the FD NOMA is superior to the HD NOMA in terms of outage probability and ergodic sum rate in the low SNR region; and 2) in delay-limited transmission mode, the FD NOMA has higher energy efficiency than the HD NOMA in the low SNR region; However, in delay-tolerant transmission mode, the system energy efficiency of the HD NOMA exceeds the FD NOMA in the high SNR region. In this paper, a transmit antenna selection (TAS)-based incremental hybrid decode–amplify–forward (IHDAF) scheme is proposed to enhance physical layer security in cooperative relay networks. Specifically, TAS is adopted at the source in order to reduce the feedback overhead. In the proposed TAS-based IHDAF scheme, the network transmits signals to the destination adaptive select direction transmission (DT) mode, AF mode, or DF mode depending on the capacity of the source-relay link and source-relay link. In order to fully examine the benefits of the proposed TAS-based IHDAF scheme, we first derive its secrecy outage probability (SOP) in a closed-form expression. We then conduct asymptotic analysis on the SOP, which reveals the secrecy performance floor of the proposed TAS-based IHDAF scheme when no channel state information is available at the source. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed TAS-based IHDAF scheme outperforms the selective decode-and-forward, the incremental decode-and-forward, and the noncooperative DT schemes in terms of the SOP and effective secrecy throughout, especially when the relay is close to the destination. In this paper, the spatial modulation (SM) technique is employed at the source and relay nodes in a full-duplex two-way relay channel (FD-TWRC) to support spectral-efficient bi-directional communications while guaranteeing a low cost implementation. Maximum likelihood detectors are employed at each node that is subject to an intrinsic self-loop interference. We first propose a tight upper bound on the average bit error probability (ABEP). Then, based on the ABEP upper bound, an asymptotic ABEP expression is derived in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Exploiting the asymptotic ABEP, an exact SNR threshold for the selection between FD-TWRC-SM and half-duplex (HD)-TWRC-SM is derived in a closed form, which sheds light on when it is beneficial to select the FD (or HD) mode. In addition, the power allocation (PA) among sources and relay is investigated, through which an optimal PA factor in terms of ABEP is obtained. We consider a full-duplex (FD) decode-and-forward system in which the time-switching protocol is employed by the multiantenna relay to receive energy from the source and transmit information to the destination. The instantaneous throughput is maximized by optimizing receive and transmit beamformers at the relay and the time-split parameter. We study both optimum and suboptimum schemes. The reformulated problem in the optimum scheme achieves closed-form solutions in terms of transmit beamformer for some scenarios. In other scenarios, the optimization problem is formulated as a semidefinite relaxation problem and a rank-one optimum solution is always guaranteed. In the suboptimum schemes, the beamformers are obtained using maximum ratio combining, zero-forcing, and maximum ratio transmission. When beamformers have closed-form solutions, the achievable instantaneous and delay-constrained throughput are analytically characterized. Our results reveal that beamforming increases both the energy harvesting and loop interference suppression capabilities at the FD relay. This paper presents a comprehensive performance analysis of full-duplex multiuser relay networks employing opportunistic scheduling with noisy and compressive feedback. Specifically, two feedback techniques based on compressive sensing (CS) theory are introduced and their effect on the system performance is analyzed. The problem of joint user identity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation at the base-station is casted as a block sparse signal recovery problem in CS. Using existing CS block recovery algorithms, the identity of the strong users is obtained and their corresponding SNRs are estimated using the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE). To minimize the effect of feedback noise on the estimated SNRs, a backoff strategy that optimally backsoff on the noisy estimated SNRs is introduced, and the error covariance matrix of the noise after CS recovery is derived. Finally, closed-form expressions for the end-to-end SNRs of the system are derived. Numerical results show that the proposed techniques drastically reduce the feedback air-time and achieve a rate close to that obtained by scheduling techniques that require dedicated error-free feedback from all network users. Key findings of this paper suggest that the choice of half-duplex or full-duplex SNR feedback is dependent on the channel coherence interval, and on low coherence intervals, full-duplex feedback is superior to the interference-free half-duplex feedback. In this paper, we study the problem of secure routing in a multihop wireless ad-hoc network in the presence of randomly distributed eavesdroppers. Specifically, the locations of the eavesdroppers are modeled as a homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) and the source-destination pair is assisted by intermediate relays using the decode-and-forward (DF) strategy. We analytically characterize the physical layer security performance of any chosen multihop path using the end-to-end secure connection probability (SCP) for both colluding and noncolluding eavesdroppers. To facilitate finding an efficient solution to secure routing, we derive accurate approximations of the SCP. Based on the SCP approximations, we study the secure routing problem, which is defined as finding the multihop path having the highest SCP. A revised Bellman–Ford algorithm is adopted to find the optimal path in a distributed manner. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) can lead to uninterrupted network operation by integrating radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting with data communication. In this paper, we consider a two-hop source-relay-destination network and investigate the efficient usage of a decode-and-forward (DF) relay for SWIPT toward the energy-constrained destination. In particular, by assuming a Rician fading environment, we jointly optimize power allocation (PA), relay placement (RP), and power splitting (PS) so as to minimize outage probability under the harvested power constraint at the destination node. We consider the two possible cases of source-to-destination distance: (1) small distance with direct information transfer link; and (2) relatively large distance with no direct reachability. Analytical expressions for individual and joint optimal PA, RP, and PS are obtained by exploiting convexity of outage minimization problem for the no direct link case. In case of direct source-to-destination link, multipseudoconvexity of joint-optimal PA, RP, and PS problem is proved, and alternating optimization is used to find the global optimal solution. Numerical results show that the joint optimal solutions, although strongly influenced by the harvested power requirement at the destination, can provide respectively 64% and 100% outage improvement over the fixed allocation scheme for without and with direct link. This work focuses on analyses of cooperative protocols to enhance the performance of power line communication systems. Based on a measurement campaign and considering a sum power constraint, achievable data rates for amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols are analyzed. Similar investigations are performed for the maximum data rates attained using Hermitian-symmetric orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (HS-OFDM) together with equal gain combining (EGC), selection combining (SC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC) techniques. The influences of optimally and uniformly allocated transmission power and frequency bandwidth are are also analyzed and the efficiency of combination before and after equalization is compared. Results show that the relative distances among source, relay and destination nodes significantly impact system performance. Also, they reveal a range of total transmission power and bandwidth in which benefits can be verified. Among combining techniques, MRC and SC present similar results, but MRC offers a slightly better performance. In relation to computational complexity, SC is the most favorable. Maximum data rate analyses of HS-OFDM with frequency domain equalization based on zero forcing and minimum mean square error criteria show that the former scheme offers almost the same performance as the latter. Relay selection is a simple technique that achieves spatial diversity in cooperative relay networks. Generally, relay selection algorithms require channel state information (CSI) feedback from all cooperating relays to make a selection decision. This requirement poses two important challenges, which are often neglected in the literature. Firstly, the fed back channel information is usually corrupted by additive noise. Secondly, CSI feedback generates a great deal of feedback overhead (air-time) that could result in significant performance hits. In this paper, we propose a compressive sensing (CS) based relay selection algorithm that reduces the feedback overhead of relay networks under the assumption of noisy feedback channels. The proposed algorithm exploits CS to first obtain the identity of a set of relays with favorable channel conditions. Following that, the CSI of the identified relays is estimated using least squares estimation without any additional feedback. Both single and multiple relay selection cases are considered. After deriving closed-form expressions for the asymptotic end-to-end SNR at the destination and the feedback load for different relaying protocols, we show that CS-based selection drastically reduces the feedback load and achieves a rate close to that obtained by selection algorithms with dedicated error-free feedback. In this paper, we investigate Raptor-coded distributed unitary space–time modulation (USTM) schemes, where both the amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying scenarios are considered, under a wireless relay network with arbitrary path gains for the channel fading coefficients. First, the AF and DF relaying procedures are investigated based on the use of an inner USTM signal and an outer Raptor code, and the related noncoherent detectors are also derived. The constellation search for the USTM signal, as well as the optimization for the Raptor code, is then investigated in order to enhance the system performance. In this paper, we consider the performance of a selective decode-and-forward (DF) relaying based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) space-time block coded (STBC) cooperative communication system with single and multiple relays. We begin with a single relay based MIMO STBC system and derive the closed form expression for the end-to-end PEP of coded block detection at the destination node. It is also demonstrated that the MIMO STBC cooperative communication system achieves the full diversity order of the system. We also derive the optimal source relay power allocation, which minimizes the end-to-end decoding error of the cooperative system for a given power budget. Subsequently, for the multiple relay scenario, we consider two different relaying protocols based on two-phase and multi-phase communication. For each of these multi-relay protocols, we derive the closed form expressions for the end-to-end error rate, diversity order, and optimal power allocation. Simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed single and multiple relay based cooperative communication schemes and the derived analytical results. In this paper, we present a comprehensive investigation on the secrecy performance of opportunistic relay selection systems employing the decode-and-forward protocol over Rayleigh fading channels. Considering a practical setting where direct link between the source node (Alice) and the destination node (Bob) is available, we study the secrecy performance of three different diversity combining schemes, namely, maximum ratio combining (MRC), distributed selection combining (DSC), and distributed switch-and-stay combining (DSSC). Throughout the analysis, we consider two different scenarios based on the availability of the eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI), i.e., Scenario A, where the eavesdropper's CSI is not available at Alice and the relay, and Scenario B, where Alice and the relay have knowledge about the eavesdropper's CSI. For Scenario A, we derive exact closed-form expressions for secrecy outage probability and simple asymptotic approximations for the secrecy outage probability, which enable the characterization of the achievable secrecy diversity order and coding gains. For Scenario B, we derive closed-form expressions for the achievable secrecy rates. For both scenarios, we investigate the impact of feedback delay (outdated CSI) on the secrecy performance wherein exact and asymptotic secrecy outage probability and closed-form expressions of the secrecy achievable rates are obtained. Our analytical findings suggest that both the MRC and DSC schemes achieve the maximum diversity order of $K+1$ where $K$ is the number of relays. In this paper, we investigate the end-to-end performance of dual-hop proactive decode-and-forward relaying networks with $N$th best relay selection in the presence of two practical deleterious effects: i) hardware impairment and ii) co-channel interference. In particular, we derive new exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions for the outage probability and average channel capacity of $N$th best partial and opportunistic relay selection schemes over Rayleigh fading channels. Insightful discussions are provided. It is shown that, when the system cannot select the best relay for cooperation, the partial relay selection scheme outperforms the opportunistic method under the impact of the same co-channel interference (CCI) . In addition, without CCI but under the effect of hardware impairment, it is shown that both selection strategies have the same asymptotic channel capacity. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of secrecy transmission in decode-and-forward (DF) relay networks subjected to slow fading. With only channel distribution information (CDI) of the wiretap channels, we aim at maximizing secrecy throughput of the two-hop transmission under a secrecy outage constraint through optimizing transmission region, rate parameters of the wiretap codes and power allocation between the source and relay. We propose fixed transmission parameter scheme (FTPS) and variable transmission parameter scheme (VTPS), which are based on the CDI and instantaneous channel state information of the main channels, respectively. In both schemes, source and relay use the same codeword, and the eavesdropper can use maximum ratio combining (MRC) reception. To improve the secrecy throughput, we further propose VTPS-D1 and VTPS-D2 schemes, where the source and relay either use independent codewords with identical code rates, or different codebooks with different code rates so that the eavesdropper can only decode the two-hop signals individually rather than using MRC. We provide explicit results on the design for all proposed schemes. Numerical results and comparisons on the secrecy throughput of these schemes are presented to reveal their respective superiorities and give some insights into the choice of design scheme. In this paper, we propose a novel Virtual Multiple-Input–Multiple-Output (VMIMO) architecture based on the concept of Spatial Modulation (SM). Using a dual-hop and Decode-and-Forward protocol, we form a distributed system, called Dual-Hop Hybrid SM (DH-HSM). DH-HSM conveys information from a Source Node (SN) to a Destination Node (DN) via multiple Relay Nodes (RNs). The spatial position of the RNs is exploited for transferring information in addition to, or even without, a conventional symbol. In order to increase the performance of our architecture, while keeping the complexity of the RNs and DN low, we employ linear precoding using Channel State Information (CSI) at the SN. In this way, we form a Receive-Spatial Modulation (R-SM) pattern from the SN to the RNs, which is able to employ a centralized coordinated or a distributed uncoordinated detection algorithm at the RNs. In addition, we focus on the SN and propose two regularized linear precoding methods that employ realistic Imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter. The power of each precoder is analyzed theoretically. Using the Bit Error Rate (BER) metric, we evaluate our architecture against the following benchmark systems: 1) single relay; 2) best relay selection; 3) distributed Space Time Block Coding (STBC) VMIMO scheme; and 4) the direct communication link. We show that DH-HSM is able to achieve significant Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) gains, which can be as high as 10.5 dB for a very large scale system setup. The diversity–multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of a general two-hop asynchronous cooperative network is examined for orthogonal and nonorthogonal selection decode-and-forward relaying protocols. The transmitter nodes send pulse amplitude modulation signals, in which information symbols are linearly modulated by a shaping waveform to be sent to the destination. We consider two different cases of band-limited and time-limited shaping waveforms. In each case, the DMT performance of the asynchronous and synchronous networks is compared. It is proved that in the band-limited system scenario, the asynchronism does not incur any performance loss, and the same DMT as that of the corresponding synchronous network is obtained for both protocols. In the time-limited-system scenario, the bandwidth is expanded for high values of signal-to-noise ratio. In this scenario, it is observed that only asynchronous signaling is able to exploit the extra degrees of freedom of the channel. We present a decode-and-forward transmission scheme based on spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes for a network consisting of two (possibly correlated) sources, one relay, and one destination. The links between the nodes are modeled as binary erasure channels. Joint source-channel coding with joint channel decoding is used to exploit the correlation. The relay performs network coding. We derive analytical bounds on the achievable rates for the binary erasure time-division multiple-access relay channel with correlated sources. We then design bilayer SC-LDPC codes and analyze their asymptotic performance for this scenario. We prove analytically that the proposed coding scheme achieves the theoretical limit for symmetric channel conditions and uncorrelated sources. Using density evolution, we furthermore demonstrate that our scheme approaches the theoretical limit also for non-symmetric channel conditions and when the sources are correlated, and we observe the threshold saturation effect that is typical for spatially-coupled systems. The downlink performance of a two-cell relay enhanced wireless network is investigated. A single relay is shared by the two base stations in the system. The relay is assumed to be placed in a geographic region covered by both base stations. The relay station is operating in the decode-and-forward mode. Closed-form approximations which estimate the exact results extremely closely are derived for the outage probability and the ergodic rate of the system.
