This paper is intended to propose the numerical methodology in optimizing the cusp gun for a 70-kV, 1-A W-band gyrotron traveling wave amplifier working at the second-harmonic TE21 mode. Two numerical methods using the simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) and genetic algorithm (GA) are adopted to perform the gun optimization. Classical electron optics software EGUN is employed to compute the beam trajectories. Maintaining the velocity ratio around 1.6, the axial velocity spreads optimized by SAA and GA are 1.44% and 0.33%, respectively, which means a great improvement compared with the manually optimized value of 2.78%. An analysis of the impact of parametric fluctuation on beam quality indicates that this cusp gun can be stably operated within a reasonable parameter scope. In this paper, a novel triode-type magnetron injection gun (MIG) with three emitters designed for gyrotron traveling wave amplifiers has been presented. This MIG can be operated in Ku/Ka/Q single band or Ku-Ka/Ka-Q dual band. The optimization of the MIG is accomplished by a multiobjective genetic algorithm method. It is anticipated that this MIG possesses an axial velocity spread of <5% in all the operating frequency bands. The results of sensitivity study show that this MIG can work stably within reasonable parametric windows. Velocity spreads considering cathode surface roughness and initial thermal temperature are analyzed. In order to enhance the efficiency of confocal gyrotron traveling-wave tubes (gyro-TWTs), this paper is intended to present a novel triode-type magnetron injection gun for a 140-GHz 2-kW confocal gyro-TWT. This novel gun, which has a pair of sectorial emitters, is expected to obtain an axial velocity spread of 7.83% and a velocity ratio of 1.01 with an anode voltage of 35 kV and a beam current of 2.4 A. The design procedure has been given in detail. Computer simulations have been carried out using 3-D electromagnetic code computer simulation technology particle tracing. The sensitivity analysis has been performed to study the parametric dependence of modulating anode voltage, accelerating anode voltage, and cathode magnetic field on beam qualities. The magnetron injection gun (MIG) is an important component in the gyro-traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT). The electron velocity spread induced to the mismatch of the electric and magnetic fields influences the performance of gyro-TWT. To improve electron beam quality, we designed a modulating anode with curved geometry. And the multi-objective genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the curved geometry. An electron beam with a velocity ratio of 1.05 and low transverse velocity spread of 0.31% in a MIG for a Q-band gyro-TWT is obtained. Compared with the previous design with a transverse velocity spread of 1.17%, the electron beam performance got improved. And the thermal analysis and parametric sensitivity were done. The effects of a small misalignment of the inner rod in a corrugated coaxial-gyrotron on eigenvalue, resonant frequency, and electronic efficiency, and so forth, are presented. As a practical application, with the electronic velocity spread and cavity wall resistivity being taken into account, the beam–wave interaction of a 170 GHz megawatt corrugated coaxial-gyrotron operating with TE 31,12 mode has been investigated. The results show that the eigenvalue increases slightly when the ratio of misalignment to outer radius D/R increases in the case of small ratio of outer to inner radius C= R/R_{\rm {in}} , but is uniform in the case of large ratio of C$ . The electronic efficiency decrease slightly when $D/R$ increases within the range of 0–0.01. If $D/R$ increases to 0.02, the efficiency decreases seriously to only about 5%. The magnetron injection gun (MIG) is an important component in a gyro-travelling wave tube. To improve the efficiency of the MIG design process, a design tool based on ANSYS Workbench combining with other commercially available software, has been developed. The design process for a Q-band triode MIG is described. A pitch factor of 1.004 and low axial velocity spread of 1.54% were achieved. Design techniques and experimental results are presented on a Ku-band TE11 mode gyro-traveling wave tube. The hot test of this amplifier gives more than 153-kW output power, 2.3-GHz bandwidth (14%), 41-dB saturated gain, and 20% efficiency driven by a 63 kV, 12-A electron beam with a pitch angle (vtvz) of 1.2, and velocity spread of 5%. A linear polarized TE11 mode input coupler is used to introduce the input power. The stability of the amplifier from oscillation, including both the operating TE11 mode and the backward wave TE21 mode, has been investigated with linear codes, nonlinear self-consistent theory, and 3-D PIC CHIPIC simulation. To suppress the potential gyro-backward wave oscillator interactions, the high frequency circuit is loaded with lossy ceramic rings. Procedures to design a curved collector for a Q-band gyrotron traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT) are presented in this paper. The collector of the gyro-TWT is identified as a crucial part due to its high loading with the dissipated power of the spent electron beam. The power capacity of the conventional cylindrical collector is seriously limited due to its smaller dissipation area. To overcome this drawback, we proposed the curved collector, which can enhance the power handling capability so that it will be more suitable for highpower gyro-devices. An optimized curved collector for our Q-band gyro-TWT was designed using numerical calculations and Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Particle Studio. Distributed lossy dielectric is of considerable interest for high-power milli- and submillimeter radiation sources, particularly for gyrotron traveling wave tubes (gyro-TWTs). The analytical design and experiment of a Q-band gyro-TWT loaded with periodic lossy dielectric rings operating in the circular \TE01 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonic are presented. The gyro-TWT is driven by a 70-kV 10-A helical electron beam with a velocity ratio of 1.0. Hot test performs maximum peak output power of 152 kW, 41-dB saturated gain, and 21.7% efficiency at 47.6 GHz. The measured bandwidth over 100 kW is at the range of 47–49 GHz. PIC simulation and large-signal prediction show excellent agreements to the hot test results. The potential backward wave oscillation interactions involving the spurious modes \TE11, \TE21, and \TE02 are effectively suppressed by loading lossy dielectric rings periodically. The Q-band gyro-TWT is zero-drive stable at the operating points, which demonstrates that loading lossy dielectric is excellent to stabilize the spurious oscillations. The improvement of the beam–wave interaction efficiency of the sheet beam extended interaction oscillator (SBEIO) is studied and presented in this article. A novel multi-parameter optimization scheme is developed, which is based on the simulated annealing global optimization algorithm, the nonlinear theory, and 3-D simulations, including the axial electric field distribution and the distances between each gap. The 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are performed to verify the scheme. A $\textit {Ka}$ -band SBEIO with nine gaps is optimized with a 36.25-kV and 3.5-A electron beam. The final optimized efficiency obtained from the developed code is 31%, which shows a good agreement with the 32.6% results of the PIC simulation. Axis coincidence consideration is necessary in the design of gyrotron solenoids; besides, radial field component strongly affects the performance of gyrodevices owing to the transverse particle–wave interaction mechanism in it, especially for high-frequency operation. In this article, the theory of multiple eccentric coils is derived. It is capable of calculating the off-axis field inside the solenoid with specified displacement and tilt. Numerical calculations are validated by 3-D electromagnetic simulation methods. Based on the measured magnet field, the displacement and tilt of a three-coil magnet system are successfully predicted with a global optimization algorithm, and then, the magnet system is well calibrated using a pair of flanges. The sheet beam gun (SBG) is operated at high temperature, and thermal expansion could induce huge electron beam degeneration. The previous SBG design, which did not take account of thermal expansion, obtained bad transportation performance. Experimental measurement showed that the distance variation between a cathode and an anode was larger than 0.42 mm, which could hugely degenerate beam performance. A new inner support rod with grooves was employed in this paper, and the heat power was reduced from 27 to 15.5 W, while the distance variation was reduced to 0.29 mm. The new SBG with adjustment according to the thermal expansion was fabricated and tested. The transportation rate after anode tunnel was enhanced to 98%, and the total transportation rate of sheet beam traveling wave tube with a period permanent magnet focusing structure was about 90%. A methodology to generate a circular TE13 mode for the operation of high-order mode (HOM) gyrotron-traveling-wave tubes is presented in this paper. A rectangular TE10 mode is efficiently converted into a circular TE13 mode using Y-type power dividers. Symmetric curved lossy dielectrics and dielectric rings are, respectively, positioned to suppress the potential coupling TE32 and TE71 modes according to their electric and magnetic field distribution properties. An HOM converter without dielectrics loaded was designed, constructed, and cold tested. Back-to-back transmission measurements exhibit good agreement with the results of computer simulations. A new curved-profile undepressed collector designed for a planned 35-GHz gyrotron traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) is proposed in this paper. This gyro-TWT, which is driven by a 70-kV, 10-A electron beam, is working at the fundamental TE01 mode with an efficiency of 20% and gain of 45 dB. Studies including theoretical analysis, numerical calculation, and computational simulation have been done. Key issues concerning electronic collecting density, dissipated power distribution, transmission performance, secondary electrons, and thermal property are considered. Overall design and cold test of a G-band gyrotron traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier are presented. This gyro-TWT aims at achieving a goal of 10-kW pulse output power in the range of 210–220 GHz. It is operated in a circular TE01 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonics, which is driven by a 50-kV, 3-A gyrating electron beam. Low velocity spread diode-type magnetron injection gun (MIG), multichannel TE01 mode input coupler, broadband metasurface output window, and lossy material loaded beam–wave interaction circuit are simulated and partially measured. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation shows that the designed gyro-TWT can achieve a saturated output power over 10 kW in the range of 210–228 GHz with a beam velocity spread of 2.29%. A diode magnetron injection gun (MIG) has been designed and analyzed for G-band gyro-traveling wave tube (Gyro-TWT). A novel curved surface emitter is proposed to enhance the beam quality. An electron beam with velocity ratio of 1.20 and transverse velocity spread of 2.11% is obtained. The beam transportation stability with geometry misalignment is also analyzed, and the assembly accuracy should be controlled under 0.1 mm. The stray electron is intercepted by the capture structure to avoid the bombardment to the interaction circuit. Then the cathode is fabricated, and the temperature distribution is measured. The experimental result matches well with the simulation. Effects of the output window reflection instability on the performance of our designed ${W}$ -band broadband gyrotron traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT) were studied by the simulation and hot test experiments. Strong oscillations and frequency self-modulation (FSM) in the after-cavity interaction (ACI) region were observed in the zero-driven state with a two-layer window and are verified with the beam-wave particle-in-cell simulation. Oscillations and FSM of 80–81.8 GHz and 91.03–94.68 GHz are, respectively, generated from the TE22 and TE02 modes in the ACI region due to the high window reflection level. By using the “sandwich” and meta-surface windows with low reflection and broad bandwidth, the parasitic ACI oscillations can be effectively suppressed. Gyrotron traveling wave tubes (gyro-TWTs) are of considerable interest for high-power millimeter and submillimeter radiation sources. The analytical design and experiment of a W-band gyro-TWT loaded with nonuniform periodic lossy dielectric rings is presented in this paper. The gyro-TWT is operating in the circular TE01 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonic, and driven by a 60 kV, 8-A gyrating electron beam with velocity ratio 1.2. Hot test results were: 1) maximum peak output power 112 kW; 2) 69.7-dB saturated gain; and 3) 23.3% efficiency at 93.5 GHz. The measured bandwidth with peak power greater than 90 kW is about 4 GHz in the range of 93–97 GHz. The hot test results show excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction. The potential backward wave oscillations involving the spurious modes TE11, TE21, and TE02 are effectively suppressed by the nonuniformly loaded periodic lossy dielectric rings. The W-band gyro-TWT is zero-drive stable at the operating points. It demonstrates that a nonuniform loaded lossy dielectric structure is excellent for suppressing potential spurious oscillations. This article explores an extremely high beam–wave interaction (BWI) efficiency technology of sheet beam traveling wave tubes (SBTWTs). An all-period phase velocity tapering optimization method is proposed to improve BWI efficiency of slow wave structure (SWS). The effects of the special electron bunching state and synchronous phase velocity change on the improvement of BWI efficiency generated by this method are analyzed. To solve the computational burden caused by dozens of parameters, self-developed 1-D nonlinear BWI code is used to calculate the BWI. For the best optimization effect, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm selected from a variety of algorithms is utilized to search for the global optimal solution. The PIC simulation verification results show that by the all-period optimization method, the 80-period staggered double vane (SDV) SWS achieves a stable output power of 18 kW with 31 kV voltage 0.9-A current sheet beam at 30 GHz. The BWI efficiency of all-period phase velocity tapering SWS has reached 64.5% at center frequency, the efficiency between 28 and 35 GHz exceeds 40%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to enhance the power capacity of gyro-traveling wave tube (Gyro-TWT), a novel multisectorial-tunnel circuit is presented in this article. The multisectorial tunnel could extend the transverse dimension of RF circuit for higher power electron beam transportation. The azimuthal drifting and transportation distortion performance for rotated electron beam are analyzed. A multibeam magnetron injection gun (MIG) is designed. The electron beam with pitch factor of 1.09 and axial velocity spread of 3.5% is obtained. And the designed cathode was fabricated and temperature distribution was measured. A broadband dielectric window with high power handling capability for gyrotron traveling wave tubes (gyro-TWTs) had been designed based on the step-type impedance transition structure. The manufactured beryllium oxide (BeO) window can achieve a relative bandwidth of 35.3% with a maximum reflection of −20 dB in the ${X}$ -band, and the corresponding transmission loss is over −0.1 dB. The resonant spikes caused by engineering factors, including assembly tilt and gap, are investigated and analyzed. Thermal analysis shows that the BeO window can achieve a high average/CW power handling capability of over 232 kW within a wide frequency range. In this article, the design and experimental verification of a 200-kW Q-band gyrotron traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier are presented. A low-velocity spread magnetic injection electron gun (MIG), a new type of multichannel TE01 mode input coupler, and a broadband double-disk output window are adopted in the design to improve the performance of the gyro-TWT. At the same time, the lossy ceramic ring-loaded high-frequency interaction circuit is constructed to provide the required loss for stable operation, and the potential oscillations are effectively suppressed. Saturated peak power of 208 kW and 12.5-kW average output power are measured at 47 GHz by hot test, corresponding to a saturated gain of 50.2 dB, an efficiency of 29.4%, and a −3-dB bandwidth of 5.5 GHz. Design and microwave measurement of a linearly polarized circular TE11 mode coupler are reported in this article. Based on our earlier designed input coupler with smooth wall, we proposed an improved structure with ridges loading resulting in a bandwidth up to 29.2%. Simulation results show the port reflection S11 less than −10 dB is in 7.9–10.6 GHz. And the split transmission S21 and S31are over −3.4 dB in this frequency range. According to the simulation results, the designed input coupler is fabricated and measured with the vector network analyzer. The measurement results show excellent performance, which is in good agreement with the simulation when the conductor loss is taken into consideration. In addition, an input coupler with a cutoff waveguide is designed to improve the efficiency of single-port transmission and the power utilization. The phase characteristics of gyrotron traveling-wave tubes (gyro-TWTs) for high-resolution imaging radars have been investigated. Determinant equations of output phase are classified into the cold phase and warm phase in the cases of cold-field and hot-field regions, respectively. The phase–frequency characteristics of cold phase are examined regarding single-mode and multimode operations, respectively. The time stability and the sensitivity to external parameters of warm phase are also investigated. The efficient methods to make the output phase of gyro-TWTs controllable are proposed. The measured output phase of the input coupler and output taper of a Ka-band gyro-TWT is linear with respect to the frequency, without any distortion. In this article, key parameters that characterize field distribution and beam-wave coupling in confocal circuits are studied. The kinetic theory of confocal gyro-TWT considering launching loss is deduced based on it, which is capable of predicting the linear gain rate of confocal circuits with arbitrary mirror widths. Numerical results manifest that the output power/gain versus interaction position agrees well with the nonlinear results in the small-signal regime. In addition, main oscillations in confocal circuits including the near-cutoff oscillation and backward-wave oscillation (BWO) have been examined. Analytical expressions that can predict the near-cutoff oscillation threshold of uniform circuits without considering loss are derived and kz-f plots are introduced for lossy circuits. Furthermore, an algorithm that can automatically search the BWO start-oscillation thresholds of confocal circuits with arbitrary mirror widths has been developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, converters of TE $^{\Box }_{{10}}$ –TE $^{\circ }_{{21}}$ mode and TE $^{\Box }_{{10}}$ –TE $^{\circ }_{{01}}$ mode with similar exciting topologic structures are designed and verified for a cold test of gyro-TWT. Both the proposed converters are composed of three sections, including TE $^{\Box }_{{10}}$ to TE $^{\Box }_{{20}}$ mode converter with ridged twist waveguide, TE $^{\Box }_{{20}}$ to TE+22 mode converter with variable cross-shaped waveguide, and the last section TE+22 to TE $^{\circ }_{{21}}$ or TE $^{\circ }_{{01}}$ mode converter ($^{\Box }$ represents the rectangular waveguide, + represents the cross-shaped waveguide, and ° represents the circular waveguide). The mode converters can be designed step-by-step and exhibit excellent wideband performance and high conversion efficiency. Simulation results reveal that the proposed TE $^{\circ }_{{21}}$ mode and TE $^{\circ }_{{01}}$ mode converters have less than 0.04 and 0.03 dB loss over 13.5- and 12-GHz bandwidths, respectively, while the return loss is below −25 dB. This paper presents the development of highly efficient gyrotron traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) with a nonuniform dielectric-loaded interaction circuit. The high-quality electron beam has been generated by curved-profile magnetron injection gun (MIG). With regard to the profile optimization, simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) and genetic algorithm (GA) are applied. An electron beam with a pitch factor of 1.6 and low-axial velocity spread of 0.9182% have been obtained. The parametric sensitivity is discussed in detail. A nonuniform dielectric-loaded circuit has been employed to suppress both global oscillations and local oscillations. Different thicknesses of dielectric materials have been manufactured and measured, demonstrating the circuit loss of oscillation modes that are enough for stable operation. The interaction circuit is analyzed under the guidance of nonlinear self-consistent theory and particle-in-cell (PIC) codes. The tube achieves a saturated peak output power of 36.24 kW at 93 GHz, corresponding to a saturated gain of 54 dB and a maximum efficiency of 45.3% within a 3-dB saturated bandwidth of 5 GHz. A high power Ku-band TE01 mode gyrotron traveling wave tube amplifier (gyro-TWT) is designed and experimented in this paper. The emphasis is put on the gyro-TWT with a high average power. In the design process, a low average velocity spread magnetron injection electron gun and a wideband multichannel TE01 mode input coupler are adopted. At the same time, a high average power curved collector is also applied. To suppress the potential gyro-backward wave oscillator interactions, a new type lossy ceramic rings and lossy ceramic pieces hybrid loaded structure is used in the high-frequency interaction circuit of gyro-TWT. In hot test, the developed Ku-band TE01 mode gyro-TWT is driven by a 70-kV 23-A helical electron beam and produce a ~31.5 kW maximum saturated output average power at 16.2 GHz, corresponding to a saturated peak power of ~450 kW (7% duty ratio), a saturated gain of ~40.5 dB, an efficiency of ~28%. In this paper, techniques to improve the collector’s dissipated power density threshold are discussed first. Then, theories of electron collection are presented, aiming at improving the effective electron-collecting area and collecting uniformity. Specifically, the layered electron beam collection in linear-taper collector, respectively, with constant and gradually varying magnetic field is modeled and discussed. Results indicate that a quasi-rectangular shape collection can be realized as the tangential collection dominates. The microchannel cooling structure, as an efficient heat dissipation technology, is applied to improve the power capacity of a W-band continuous-wave (CW) sheet beam (SB) extended interaction oscillator. Its configuration is designed and optimized to further enhance the heat flux handling. The results show that microchannel cooling technology can greatly enhance the heat transfer efficiency. Specifically, the maximum temperature of the cavity drops from 308.9 °C to 144.9 °C. The power capacity of CW increases to 7 kW with 2% (49-kV and 2-A SB) electronic interception, and the tolerable electronic interception rate increases to 4% with 3.6-kW CW output power and 2.3-kW ohmic power loss. Gyrotron traveling-wave tubes (gyro-TWTs) have been proved to be an attractive power source in many applications such as high-resolution radars, high-power communication systems, and electronic warfare systems. The main output indexes such as peak and average output power, interaction efficiency, and bandwidth are important for these devices. In addition, a great deal of reliability requirements such as nonstop stable operating time, operation lifetime, and environmental adaptability should be met. In this paper, detailed developing processes of gyro-TWTs in high average power operations are presented, including theoretical analyses, multiphysics simulations of key components, fabrication, and construction of the automatic hot test platform. Finally, the measured results of a Ka-band gyro-TWT for industrial applications are presented. The amplifier exhibits an excellent performance of 100-h nonstop stable operation, a 1-dB fraction bandwidth of 8%, an efficiency of more than 20%, and a peak power and an average power of more 150 and 10 kW, respectively. A new topology to excite the HE04 mode in wide bandwidth for confocal gyro-TWAs is presented. The mode exciter consists of a TE04 mode exciter and a TE04–HE04 transition waveguide section formed by two cascaded one-stage tapers. In addition, the closed-to-open confocal waveguide boundaries are studied. Numerical results show that the port reflection of the whole structure is well below −10 dB over 90–110 GHz; the transmission of HE04 mode is better than −1 dB over 94–107 GHz. Even more important, a maximum transmission variation of less than ±0.15 dB over the 1-dB bandwidth and a mode purity of better than 97.2% over the 3-dB bandwidth are achieved. The design and experiment of a high power and broadband Ku-band gyrotron traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier operating in the TE11 mode are presented in this paper. A new-type broadband rotating TE11 mode input coupler is applied to excite operating mode and a broadband three-disk beryllium oxide ceramic output window is used in the designed gyro-TWT. In order to suppress the potential oscillations, expand working bandwidth, and improve the heat dissipation capability of high frequency system, a periodic beryllium oxide and silicon carbide composite lossy ceramic rings loaded high-frequency circuit with a nonlinear small change output taper is adopted in the gyro-TWT. When the beam voltage is 70 kV and the beam current is 12 A, the experiment of this Ku-band gyro-TWT developed shows that the measured maximum output average power is ~20 kW at the frequency 16 GHz, corresponding to a maximum output pulse power of ~200 kW (10% duty ratio), a gain of 43.0 dB and a maximum efficiency of 23.8%, −3-dB saturation gain bandwidth of 2.6 GHz (~16.3%), and −1-dB saturation gain bandwidth of 1.5 GHz (~9.4%). Theoretical and experimental investigations on an output system, consisting of waveguide horn, phase-shift section, RF window, and monitoring section, capable of outputting a Gaussian-like beam rather than a circular waveguide TE1,1 mode, for a Ku-band gyrotron-traveling-wave tube, have been carried out. An azimuthally symmetric Gaussian-like beam has been observed at the output port in both the low-power and high-power measurements. The experimental results showed that the mode purity of output Gaussian beam is over 98% from 14.5 to 16.5 GHz. There is no arcing monitored when the output pulse peak power is over 160 kW when the pulsed tube operates with 10% duty cycle. The output Gaussian-like beam can be directly usable for low-loss transmission as well as for effective antenna feeding and no extra mode converter is needed, which can improve the transmission efficiency of the transmission line system and form a compact high-power system. This paper presents the design and simulation of a broadband Ka-band gyrotron traveling-wave tube operating in the $\text {TE}^{d}_{\text {02}}$ mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonic with a fully dielectric-loaded circuit. Through loading loss-free dielectric on the entire circuit, the dispersion properties of the circuit are changed to maintain resonance condition at a wide frequency band. A sliced lossy dielectric-loaded structure is employed to provide the required loss for stable operation. The interaction circuit is analyzed under the field matching theory, the nonlinear self-consistent theory, and particle-in-cell codes. A saturated peak output power of 100 kW is achieved at 29 GHz, corresponding to a saturated gain of 44 dB and an efficiency of more than 15% within a 3-dB saturated bandwidth of 6.1 GHz (20% relative bandwidth). The propagation characteristics of a confocal waveguide are related to the radial spheroidal function, which is extremely complicated. A quadratic polynomial fitting (QPF) expression derived from numerical results by interpolation was successfully applied to the development of confocal gyrotrons. However, the QPF expression is valid only for a moderate spheroidal parameter. As a result, it cannot work well for confocal gyrotron travelling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) applications since the Fresnel parameter may be small for stable operations. For the first time, an efficient algorithm is developed to accurately calculate the spheroidal functions. Based on it, the MATLAB code with high accuracy and efficiency is developed to analyze the propagation characteristics of confocal waveguide. The calculated results and the QPF results are compared for different mirror apertures, and then demonstrated by high frequency structure simulator (HFSS). The calculated results show good agreement with the HFSS results for different mirror apertures while the QPF solution agrees with the HFSS results only for large apertures. A high-power Ku-band TE01 mode gyro-traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT) with a loss loading structure is designed, fabricated, and tested. A high beam quality magnetron injection gun generating 68-kV, 20–30-A electron beam is optimized to provide a high power radiation. A novel lossy ceramic loaded structure with mode selective attenuation ability is proposed to suppress the potential backward wave oscillation. The interaction circuit is analyzed by linear, nonlinear self-consistent theory, and experiment. An improved wideband input structure design is proposed accordingly. In the hot test, the proposed gyro-TWT produces a 420-kW maximum peak power, about 35-dB saturated gain, 23% efficiency, and more than 1.6 GHz (10%)−1-dB bandwidth in a stable operating condition. To accurately measure the performance of dielectric loaded circuits for gyrotron traveling wave tubes, a novel topological structure to generate the TE21○ or TE01○ (superscript represents circular waveguide) mode is proposed and verified in this paper. The topology is constituted by an overmoded TE10□ to TE20□ (superscript represents rectangular waveguide) mode converter with multiple matching steps and a taper from TE20□ to TE21○ or TE01○ mode. This topology allows the TE21○ or TE01○ mode to be excited by changing the taper dimensions. Simulation results reveal that the TE21○ and TE01○ mode converters, respectively, have a 1-dB bandwidth of 12.8 and 9.3 GHz with an excellent performance. Converters for the back-to-back millimeter-wave measurements were fabricated with computerized numerical control and wire cutting techniques. A new type of input/output coupler for sheet beam traveling wave tube is designed, analyzed, and measured in this paper. In the design, a special sloped coupling aperture distributed between two paralleled rectangular waveguides in H -plane is employed for compact dimensions, ease of fabrication, attainment of high power capacity, and more convenience for periodic cusped magnet focusing system. A nonlinear-curve profile with Chebyshev-curve distribution is applied to extend the operating frequency bandwidth while suppressing reflections to avoid generating oscillation in the slow-wave structure. Based on the analytical investigation and numerical simulation, an optimized sloping angle of the coupling aperture is obtained to improved performance. Simulations imply that the coupler achieves a broadband bandwidth ( S11< -20 dB) of 23 and 10 GHz in $W$ - and $Q$ -band, respectively, with coupling coefficient above −0.2 dB. In this paper a methodology to excite a circular high-order TE13-mode via a rectangular TE50 mode was proposed and verified by the millimeter wave measurement. This topology can also be applied to launch other high-order modes (HOMs) such as TE 1n , TE 2n^\prime and TE 0n^\prime (n or n^\prime =1 , 2, 3) modes via different transition rectangular TE _{m0} ( m = 2n-1$ or $m = 2n^\prime $ ) modes, which can be achieved by adjusting the number of coupling apertures and optimizing dimensions of tapered waveguides. A W-band TE13 mode converter was designed and analyzed. Two identical converters connected back to back as a proof-of-principle operating at $Q$ -band were fabricated and measured. Good performance was observed, which was in good agreement with the simulation results. Based on the previous double-staggered grating waveguide slow-wave structures (SWSs), an improved design is presented in this paper. The linear profile of the beam tunnel is replaced by a curved shape on its broad side. The high-frequency characteristics and beam–wave interaction are presented before and after the alteration. A novel approach in loading the attenuator with high attenuation is proposed to ensure a stable beam–wave interaction for the improved SWS. From our calculations, the improved SWS possesses a larger average interaction impedance with a rate of about 13.1%. Particle-in-cell simulation predicts that the saturated output power, the corresponding gain, and the electronic efficiency are all significantly improved, with an increase of more than 1-kW output power and 3-dB gain over the operating frequency range, and the maximum efficiency increases from 19.4% to 22.2%. Novel compact input and output couplers for broadband operation of sheet beam traveling wave tubes are analyzed, designed, and cold tested. Multistage stepped waveguide and cascaded Bragg resonators are proposed and applied to improve the performance and extend the operating bandwidth. Optimized curve-Bragg resonators are studied to correct the phase between the reflector and $H$ -bend waveguide, which bring about a further enhancement of the coupler behavior. HFSS simulations predict a −3 dB transmission bandwidth about 38% and 34% are achieved, respectively, in Ku and $Q$ band. Besides, the large beam tunnel property of this kind of coupler benefit the beam transport of sheet beam devices. Different components as the input and output couplers for Ku- and $Q$ -band SB-TWT are manufactured and cold tested. Wider bandwidth property of traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) is continuously pursued to satisfy the increased data rates and multiple channels in modern communications. In this paper, the coalesced-mode operation instead of the general single-mode operation for the double staggered grating waveguide (DSGW) slow-wave structure (SWS) is proposed to achieve an ultrawideband property of the TWTs driven by sheet electron beam. Analytical results of the high-frequency properties for the SWS, including the dispersion characteristics, interaction impedance, and transmission property, demonstrate that the coalesced-mode operation for the DSGW is possible. A novel loading approach of the attenuator with good performance, and meanwhile, a compact configuration is proposed to suppress the potential oscillations, thus leading to a steady beam–wave interaction for the coalesced-mode operation. To verify the concept of coalesced-mode operation, particle-in-cell simulation is performed. Simulation results demonstrate that the optimized RF circuit indeed can steadily operate in coalesced mode and produce over 5-kW saturated output power ( $\sim 10$ % efficiency) in a very broad frequency ranging from 37 to 52 GHz, corresponding to a relative bandwidth of 33.7%. RF circuit design, thermal analysis, fabrication, and measurement of a continuous wave (CW) high-power sheet beam traveling wave tube (SB-TWT) operating in the Ku-band were demonstrated in this paper. The slow wave structure circuit was constructed by double staggered grating waveguides (DSGWs), and the lossy dielectrics attached in the H-plane were applied to suppress parasitic oscillations. The Particle-in-cell simulation predicted that the CW SB-TWT can provide >20-kW output power in the band range of 16.2–18.5 GHz, with a maximum small signal gain of 38 dB. Microchannel cooling, which has been proved to be an efficient cooling method for microelectronic chip, very large scale integration, and power electronic modules with very high heat flux were introduced to improve the thermal capacity and heat dissipation ability. A thermal analysis of the RF circuit considering attenuated losses and electrons interception was studied in detail. Investigation shows that the RF circuit can operate with maximum $\sim 1$ -kW dielectric loss power (1.5 times of the loss power generated from the saturated output power at center frequency) and a maximum of 7% interception of electrons. Furthermore, an interaction circuit, including 23 DSGWs implanted with BeO–SiC to provide necessary attenuation, was fabricated and cold tested.
