In renewable energy micro-source applications, a wide range of voltage conversion of the step-up converter is an essential part to equalize the typical low voltage of micro-source with DC-bus voltage of Inverter or motor drives. In order to meet this purpose, an ultra-voltage gain step-up DC-DC converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter has made an arrangement of the regenerative-boost fed switched inductor and capacitor configurations. Thereby, due to such an organization of structure, the proposed converter can develop an extremely high voltage-gain even at lower duty ratios. In addition, it has the advantage of lower switching stress across all power semi-conductive diodes. Furthermore, this paper describes the steady-state analysis and comparative features of the converter with existing recent literature. Finally, to validate theoretical analysis and test the feasibility and suitability of the proposed ultra-gain converter, the experimental results were observed by a 500 W fabricated prototype. The dc-dc converters with high step-up DC-voltage gain play a vital role in integrating low voltage DC sources. Though several converter topologies are reported in the recent past, attempts have been made to reduce the components, especially the switching devices, passive elements, converter losses, etc., of the converter. A novel DC-DC converter topology, viz., single switched impedance network (SSIN)-based converter with n-stage is proposed in this paper. The operation of the SSIN based converter in continuous and discontinuous conduction modes are discussed. The effect of parasitic elements on DC-voltage gain and efficiency of the SSIN is carried out. The small-signal model of the SSIN converter is derived. The performance of the SSIN converter is compared with the similar converter topologies. The 500 W prototypes of the SSIN with n = 1 and n = 2 are fabricated, and the experimental results are presented in this paper. To improve the converter performance, SiC-based semiconductor devices are used. Differential power processing (DPP) converters have been developed for photovoltaic (PV) panels to preclude energy yield reduction due to partial shading. In large-scale PV systems comprising numerous series-connected panels, DPP converters with good modularity are preferable because the number of series-connected panels varies depending on applications. This paper proposes a switched capacitor converter (SCC)-based modular DPP architecture for large-scale PV systems. Four panels are grouped as a module, each having a panel-level DPP converter, and modules are connected in series to form a string. The design of the panel-level DPP converter is fixed while the system can be arbitrarily extended by stacking modules, achieving good modularity. Adjacent panel-level DPP converters are dc-coupled, by which modules can be connected using long cables, mitigating installation limitations. The paper develops two computationally efficient models, namely a detailed equivalent model and an average-value model, with provisions for representation of the critical state of converter blocking, for modular multilevel converters with embedded storage. These models are indispensable in the simulation of dc faults. The developed detailed equivalent model provides accuracy that matches electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, with much reduced computational burden; the developed average-value model represents the averaged behavior of the converter by neglecting switching transients. Both models are extensively evaluated in the context of an HVDC system against benchmark results form a detailed switching model developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results confirm the validity and accuracy of the models for steady state, transient, and faulted operating conditions including when the converter is blocked in response to a dc fault. This paper proposes a novel dual input nine-level inverter (DINLI) topology which requires only seven controllable devices. The dual inputs are un-identical DC voltage sources in the ratio 1:3. A simple control scheme is derived by appropriately modifying the phase disposition pulse width modulation technique to generate high-quality 9-level output from the DINLI topology. At any given instant, a maximum of four switches conduct out of which only a maximum of two switches operate at high frequency, bringing down the switching and conduction losses significantly and improving the overall system efficiency. The bidirectional DINLI (BDINLI) topology with reactive power capability can be realized by replacing the unidirectional devices with the controlled switches (i.e., total nine switches). In addition, the proposed DINLI topology does not require extra voltage balancing circuits which further improves the efficiency. The DINLI operation is verified through MATLAB simulations for grid-connected applications and its extension to an n-level, 3-phase application is also investigated. This paper presents a new single-source three-phase seven-level inverter with an inherent three-time voltage boosting capability for medium-voltage applications. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of two switched-capacitor (SC) networks with an added half-bridge module per phase. Each of such integrated SC networks requires a single capacitor associated with three active power switches. The three-time voltage boosting feature of the proposed topology can reduce the dc-link voltage requirements by 50% in comparison to the traditional neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors, active NPC (ANPC), hybrid clamped ANPC, and cascaded H-bridge topologies, and 75% to advanced ANPC topologies. It can also reduce the number of required switches and capacitors as well as their voltage stresses compared to those state-of-the-art topologies reported in the literature. By integrating “n” number of added SC networks in the proposed seven-level basic topology, the number of output voltage levels can be extended to 2n+3 per phase. A finite control set model predictive control algorithm is also derived to control the converter in both the active and reactive power exchanges modes without distorting the generated grid current quality. The capacitor voltage balancing is inherent in the proposed topology, and thus, there is no need for any additional voltage balancing circuit, which further reduces the control complexity. Conventionally, the converter of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is fed by the uncontrollable diode bridge rectifier (DBR), which leads to a low grid-side power factor (PF) and high current total harmonic distortion (THD). In this paper, an alternative solution for the grid-connected high-speed SRM drive system with improved PF is proposed. In the proposed drive system, the three-level active front end (AFE) is connected in cascade with the midpoint converter for SRM operation. A centralized strategy, which controls the AFE and SRM together, is proposed to govern the motor speed and grid-side PF by regulating the real power and reactive power of the system, respectively. Specifically, the real power, reactive power, and the voltage balancing of split capacitors are controlled by the model predictive directed power control (MP-DPC) algorithm, which significantly reduces the control complexity and guarantees the fast dynamic response. Consequently, satisfying speed regulation, high PF, low current THD, and bi-directional power-transfer capability are achieved. There is increasing interest in the use of transformer-less systems for grid-connected photovoltaic applications. Compared to transformer-coupled solutions, transformer-less systems offer a typical efficiency increase of 1–2%, reduced system size and weight, and a reduction in cost. However, the removal of the transformer has technical implications. In addition to the loss of galvanic isolation, dc current injection into the grid is a potential risk. While desirable, complete mitigation of dc current injection via convention current control methods is known to be particularly challenging. For this reason, this paper proposes an active dc suppression method, in which the dc current injection is accurately determined by extracting the line-frequency component from inverter dc-link current measurements, and then, mitigated with an active closed-loop controller. A dual-input high step-up DC/DC converter with zero voltage turn-off (ZVT) auxiliary circuit is presented in this paper. The cost of whole photovoltaic (PV) power could be decreased significantly by the proposed converter because it allows two PV panels to be connected at the same time. ZVT auxiliary circuit provides soft switching in a wide range of load variations with six passive components. Turn-off switching losses could be decreased and the efficiency of the whole converter could be improved. In , the operation principle and performance characteristics of the proposed converter have been analyzed and an 800 W experimental prototype has been built to validate the analytical results in. The non-inverting buck-boost converter has emerged as one of the most promising topologies for distributed maximum power point tracking applications. Pressure to reduce cost and volume of photovoltaic module integrated converters often compels bootstrap capacitor type gate drivers. The bootstrap technique is a simple and economical solution to create a floating power supply for high-side gate drivers. However, it comes with a major challenge, as the low-side switch must be periodically turned on, to recharge the high-side bootstrap capacitor. In the buck and the boost mode, one of the switching legs of the converter must be held with the high-side switch on, which eventually discharges the high-side capacitor. When the non-inverting buck-boost input voltage is regulated by means of a single voltage loop, recharging the bootstrap capacitor causes an undesired ripple in the PV module voltage, degrading the regulation quality. In order to mitigate this problem, this paper proposes a cascaded control technique, entailing regulation of the PV module voltage and inductor current. The cascaded controller dramatically improves the rejection of the disturbance induced by the periodic recharge of the bootstrap capacitor, thanks to the fast action of the current loop, regulating the average value of the inductor current. Converter transfer functions and controller design are derived and validated. Experimental results clearly show that the cascaded control scheme outperforms the traditional voltage control scheme, resulting in a better regulation of the PV module voltage. This paper proposes a new diode-clamped multilevel inverter that can effectively balance the voltages of dc capacitors. For the proposed inverter, the inductors are inserted between the diodes and the main switches. Also, the voltage balance of the dc capacitors can be guaranteed by controlling the opening time of the corresponding main switches in particular modes. Thus, the parallel circuits on the dc side in the conventional inverters are canceled. Consequently, the proposed topology requires fewer switches, diodes, and capacitors, although it adds the compensation currents to the corresponding main switches. In this paper, a new topology of two-stage cascaded switched-diode (CSD) multilevel inverter is proposed for medium-voltage renewable energy integration. First, it aims to reduce the number of switches along with its gate drivers. Thus, the installation space and cost of a multilevel inverter are reduced. The spike removal switch added in the first stage of the inverter provides a flowing path for the reverse load current, and as a result, high voltage spikes occurring at the base of the stepped output voltage based upon conventional CSD multilevel inverter topologies are removed. Moreover, to resolve the problems related to dc source fluctuations of multilevel inverter used for renewable energy integration, the clock phase-shifting (CPS) one-cycle control (OCC) is developed to control the two-stage CSD multilevel inverter. By shifting the clock pulse phase of every cascaded unit, the staircase-like output voltage waveforms are obtained and a strong suppression ability against fluctuations in dc sources is achieved. The flying-capacitor-based multilevel converter is one of the well-known breeds of the multilevel power converters. This paper proposes a new flying-capacitor-based multilevel converter to minimize the number of flying capacitors (FCs) and power switches. The advantage of the proposed FC-based multilevel converter in comparison with the conventional flying-capacitor multicell converter is that it needs fewer FCs. Also, in comparison with the stacked multicell converter, the proposed multilevel converter requires fewer semiconductor switches. In order to balance the voltage of the FCs in proposed multilevel converter, a new active voltage balancing method which is fully implemented using logic-form equations is presented. The proposed voltage balancing method measures output current and FC voltages to generate switching states to produce the required output voltage level, as well as balance the FCs voltages at their reference values. The output voltage of the proposed multilevel converter controlled with suggested active voltage balancing method can be modulated with any pulse-width-modulation (PWM) method, such as phase-shifted-carrier PWM or level-shifted-carrier PWM. Simulation results and experimental measurements of proposed FC-based multilevel converter are presented to verify the performance of the proposed converter, and its novel switching and modulation strategy, which is based on the active voltage balancing method. Open-end winding three-phase variable speed drives with dual-inverter supply have been extensively investigated for various applications, including series hybrid powertrains and propulsion motors. The topology is simple to realize while offering a higher number of switching states without the need for capacitor voltage balancing algorithms, when compared to the standard multilevel converters. This paper extends the open-end winding concept to a five-phase drive. A relatively simple space-vector modulation (SVM) algorithm, based on the already well-understood five-phase two-level drive SVM method, is developed. The proposed modulation technique has the advantage of being straightforward to implement and, like its two-level counterpart, is able to generate output voltages with minimum low-order harmonic content. The method generates up to 17-level output phase voltage and, therefore, offers superior harmonic performance when compared to the two-level five-phase modulation.
