This paper presents a different Finite Control Set – Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for grid-connected three-phase bidirectional power inverters. These are typically used in dc or ac renewable-based microgrids (MGs), where bidirectional operation and fast dynamic response is required. The bidirectional grid-connected inverters are an essential part of MG, which inject energy into the ac grid or demand energy from it. The dynamic behavior of the system is a major concern since the current can suddenly change depending on the hierarchical controller. This paper proposes a different cost function using sliding mode theory, which offers a good dynamic response, reduced computational burden, and a parameter-free control model. The operation principle of the proposed controller is given and evaluated using a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) system, but also experimentally with a 1kW laboratory prototype. The final results demonstrate the advantages of using this approach in grid-connected three-phase bidirectional power inverters in terms of dynamic response and reduced computational burden, making this solution technically attractive and viable. Conventional model predictive control (MPC) for three-level active neutral point clamped converter (ANPC) utilizes weighting factors to achieve the optimal control of multiple control objectives in a single cost function. However, the selection of these weighting factors has an impact on the performance of the controlled objectives significantly. Tuning of weighting factors is usually tedious and lacks theoretical background. Moreover, the predictive and evaluation process for multiple objectives optimization have to be carried out by enumerating all admissible switching states within one loop. To simplify the complexity of this process and eliminate the effect of weighting factors, this paper proposes a cascaded predictive control scheme for a 3L-ANPC inverter fed induction machine (IM) drive. With the proposed approach, three separate cost functions for three control objectives, stator flux vector, neutral point voltage and device loss distribution are evaluated in a cascaded way, so that the optimization of these control objectives is performed independently. A 3L-ANPC inverter driven IM drive is studied in this paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results in different operating conditions confirm that the proposed method achieves satisfactory steady-state and transient performances comparable to the conventional predictive control approach. The weighting factors used in the conventional method are eliminated and the computational effort is reduced by 68% compared to the conventional method without any sacrifice in the drive performance. This paper presents a dual-hysteresis band control method for multi-drive systems based on a nine-switch inverter. The drive system contains two independent three-phase induction motors fed by a nine-switch inverter. Independent control of torque, speed, and stator current of two load stages is achieved. The proposed strategy offers a reliable control operation of both induction machines under individual load profiles. Instead of using independent sets of three-phase voltage source converters, the nine-switch inverter is used to drive separate machines. Thus, the volume and size of the power stage are noticeably reduced due to the use of fewer semiconductors. The theoretical concept and design steps of the proposed method are presented. The main drawbacks of conventional direct torque control (DTC) drives are erratic switching frequency and high torque ripples. The multilevel inverter fed DTC drives are proved to be an alternative for eliminating these drawbacks. Apart from the commonly used three-level inverter fed drives, this paper presents an even-level inverter fed DTC drive. In this paper, a space vector modulated DTC algorithm for a four-level DTC drive is proposed and is implemented by feeding both ends of an open-end-winding induction motor with two-level inverters. The space vector modulation (SVM) algorithm uses a fractal based design for switching voltage vector generation and allied computations are performed in 60 degree co-ordinate system. Representation of vectors as integer values in 60 degree co-ordinate planes avoids fractional arithmetic, which simplifies the algorithmic computations. Detailed analyses of the drive performance under dissimilar operating modes are presented. The loading performance of the drive is experimentally verified on a 5-HP induction motor with a strain gauge type mechanical loading system. The supply-side current of an inverter-fed induction motor (IM) is easily accessible and less affected by noises than the motor stator current. This paper proposes a novel sensorless speed estimation method for an IM using the spectrum of the supply-side current. However, due to the influence of fundamental supply frequency, it is difficult to carry out the speed detection straight from the supply-side current signal. In this paper, an analytic model for characterizing the supply-side current of an inverter-fed IM using the modulation theory and the switching function concept is developed. Then, the Hilbert transform is applied to extract the speed harmonic component from the supply-side current. Finally, an interpolated Goertzel algorithm is put forward to enhance the estimation precision of IM speed. The performance of the proposed sensorless speed estimation method is proved by the speed estimation results obtained from hardware experiments of an IM fed by an inverter under different load conditions. This paper presents a new single-source three-phase seven-level inverter with an inherent three-time voltage boosting capability for medium-voltage applications. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of two switched-capacitor (SC) networks with an added half-bridge module per phase. Each of such integrated SC networks requires a single capacitor associated with three active power switches. The three-time voltage boosting feature of the proposed topology can reduce the dc-link voltage requirements by 50% in comparison to the traditional neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors, active NPC (ANPC), hybrid clamped ANPC, and cascaded H-bridge topologies, and 75% to advanced ANPC topologies. It can also reduce the number of required switches and capacitors as well as their voltage stresses compared to those state-of-the-art topologies reported in the literature. By integrating “n” number of added SC networks in the proposed seven-level basic topology, the number of output voltage levels can be extended to 2n+3 per phase. A finite control set model predictive control algorithm is also derived to control the converter in both the active and reactive power exchanges modes without distorting the generated grid current quality. The capacitor voltage balancing is inherent in the proposed topology, and thus, there is no need for any additional voltage balancing circuit, which further reduces the control complexity. This paper presents an intelligent-based fault-tolerant system for a solar photovoltaic (PV) inverter. Artificial neural network based controller is used to monitor, detect, and diagnose the faults in solar PV panels, battery, semiconductor switches, and inverters. The cascaded multilevel inverter is connected across the combination of solar PV panel and battery for dc–ac conversion. The major advantage of the proposed topology is that it can deliver power from source to the load even under fault and partial shaded conditions. The paper also reviews on various faults in the solar PV energy conversion process and provides suitable solutions for each circumstance. Simulations are undertaken in MATLAB 2016a/Simulink and experimental investigation is carried out for a 3 kWp solar PV system. The results have proven that the system is capable to deliver power in spite of faulty environments. Recent technical advances in control, protection and interconnection of distributed power generation units imply that it is practically viable and economically profitable to keep them as backup generators in isolated operating modes. Therefore, along with the development of islanding detection techniques, seamless operation in transition between islanded and grid connected modes is required and more sophisticated control strategies are needed to recognize the existing working condition and adjust the performance to meet the strict standards of grid interconnection. This paper presents a new adaptive control structure, based on internal model control (IMC), which uses multiple models and an inherent islanding detection method through an optimized switching mechanism to tune the operation of a three-phase inverter under transitions between islanded and grid-tied conditions. By applying a power synchronization method, the system emulates the operation of a synchronous machine which is needless to rely on a phase-locked loop to synchronize during the transitions. Hardware co-simulation environment in Simulink/PLECS and Xilinx System Generator have been utilized to evaluate the transient behavior of the controller in discretized domain and verify its robustness during parameter variations and load switching conditions. Various switching rules have been applied and a comparison of their effect in transient response is demonstrated. This paper presents a modification of the Vienna rectifier (VR) to obtain more than three voltage levels at the DC line connection, while preserving the unity power factor at the AC grid side. The proposed unidirectional multilevel there-phase rectifier, called the “Negev rectifier”, has a reduced device count and utilizes a unique novel Time Division Multiplexed based control scheme, which makes the challenging N-level VR expansion possible. The Negev rectifier can serve as a grid interface for supplying dc voltage to multilevel inverters with 4 up to 7 voltage levels, eliminating the burden of inverter-side voltage balancing control. Reliability of power systems can be improved by the use of voltage source inverters (VSIs) with fast dynamic control, which can handle uncertainties induced by renewable energy resources and nonlinear loads. To ensure fast-dynamic response and simplified controller design, various model predictive control (MPC) methods are investigated in this paper. In the conventional MPC design for three-level VSIs, the cost function requires an additional term to ensure the balance of the neutral-point voltage (NP-V), which however can considerably impact the main goal of the MPC. To address this issue, an enhanced MPC using virtual space vectors is proposed, which allows the use of a significantly reduced weighting factor for the term in the cost function for NP-V balancing, while retaining fast-dynamic response. Additionally, the proposed MPC leads to reduced harmonic distortion in the VSI output voltage and current. Both simulation and controller hardware-in-the-loop studies are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed enhanced MPC in an operating microgrid under both steady-state and fast-transient conditions. This paper proposes a new direct torque control (DTC) method for a three-level neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) inverter-fed interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive. Theoretically, in comparison to a two-level inverter, a 3L-NPC inverter is advantageous for reducing the torque and flux ripples in DTC drives. Nonetheless, the ripples can still be excessive and detrimental if low switching frequencies are desired. To reduce the torque and flux ripples while maintaining a low average switching frequency, a switching table-based DTC scheme employing two voltage vectors in each sampling period is proposed in this paper. A duty ratio calculation method with minimal parameter dependence is developed, taking into account the dynamic torque and flux characteristics of an IPMSM. In addition, the problems of neutral point voltage fluctuations and smooth voltage vector switching, which are inherited from the 3L-NPC inverter, are addressed. An enhanced DC–DC converter is proposed in this paper, based on the combination of the Cuk and SEPIC converters, which is well-suited for solar photovoltaic (PV) applications. The converter uses only one switch (which is ground-referenced, so simple gate drive circuitry may be used), yet provides dual outputs in the form of a bipolar DC bus. The bipolar output from the DC–DC converter is able to send power to the grid via any inverter with a unipolar or bipolar DC input, and leakage currents can be eliminated if the latter type is used without using lossy DC capacitors in the load current loop. The proposed converter uses integrated magnetics cores to couple the input and output inductors, which significantly reduces the input current ripple and hence greatly improves the power extracted from the solar PV system. The design methodology along with simulation, experimental waveforms, and efficiency measurements of a 4-kW DC–DC converter are presented to prove the concept of the proposed converter. There is increasing interest in the use of transformer-less systems for grid-connected photovoltaic applications. Compared to transformer-coupled solutions, transformer-less systems offer a typical efficiency increase of 1–2%, reduced system size and weight, and a reduction in cost. However, the removal of the transformer has technical implications. In addition to the loss of galvanic isolation, dc current injection into the grid is a potential risk. While desirable, complete mitigation of dc current injection via convention current control methods is known to be particularly challenging. For this reason, this paper proposes an active dc suppression method, in which the dc current injection is accurately determined by extracting the line-frequency component from inverter dc-link current measurements, and then, mitigated with an active closed-loop controller. An isolated single sourced multi-output dc/dc converter with a high-frequency link was proposed before to feed different cells of the Asymmetrical Cascaded H-bridge (ACHB) inverter. One of the fundamental advantages of the ACHB is that the main H-bridge is commutated with fundamental frequency, passing the majority of the inverter power. However, the isolated dc/dc converter needs to be connected to the main voltage source with high-voltage/high-frequency switches, which limits the power capability and the efficiency of the converter. In this paper, a switching pattern based on nearest level modulation method is proposed to command all the power to be transferred through the main H-bridge. Therefore, the power circulates between the auxiliary H-bridges with no need for high-voltage switches. As a result, a single-input single-output auxiliary converter is needed with only 5% of the power rating. This solution reduces cost and size while it improves the efficiency of the converter. Furthermore, the architecture makes the inverter more suitable for high power and high-voltage applications. The inverter switching strategy is based on programmable firing angles. The main dc-link of the grid connected inverter is controlled to achieve maximum power point tracking, while the dc/dc isolated converter is controlled to regulate the auxiliary dc-links. This paper proposes a new diode-clamped multilevel inverter that can effectively balance the voltages of dc capacitors. For the proposed inverter, the inductors are inserted between the diodes and the main switches. Also, the voltage balance of the dc capacitors can be guaranteed by controlling the opening time of the corresponding main switches in particular modes. Thus, the parallel circuits on the dc side in the conventional inverters are canceled. Consequently, the proposed topology requires fewer switches, diodes, and capacitors, although it adds the compensation currents to the corresponding main switches. This paper proposes a deadbeat finite set model predictive current control based on discrete space vector modulation (DSVM) in order to achieve robust characteristics from the grid impedance variation while guaranteeing high performance of output current waveforms and a fixed switching frequency. The proposed DSVM strategy enables to obtain a large number of virtual voltage vectors without complex initialization process or lookup table, which are the drawbacks of the conventional DSVM strategies. A deadbeat technique was adopted to minimize the number of candidate voltage vectors considered in the cost function in order to avoid the high computational burden caused by considering all voltage vectors. This paper presents a new open-circuit fault diagnosis algorithm for multiple switch of microgrid inverter in different load change condition. From the analysis of the waveform features and frequency composition for the main fault component under the different switch states, a low frequency sampling principle of the main fault component is developed. For the proposed fault diagnosis algorithm, first, based on above principle, small sampling data are obtained by the second low frequency mean sample processing, which can be used to reflect the main component features of different switch states and reduce the amount of the processed data. Because the data of the second low frequency mean sample processing comes from the obtained system data, it does not add any additional hardware and has the lower cost. Moreover, the obtained low frequency sampling data are divided into different feature data to adopt corresponding data processing scheme. Thus, the information of the main fault component is retained and the impact of load change is removed for any feature data. Furthermore, the feature values of the processed low frequency sampling data are extracted from the viewpoint of data attenuation. Finally, neural network is used to implement intelligent classification. The dependency and the number of threshold can be reduced, and low frequency sampling data are fully utilized to reflect the overall features. Compared with the existing fault diagnosis algorithms, the actual computational quantity is effectively reduced without affecting the accuracy and stability of the diagnosis results for microgrid inverter under load change condition. In this paper, a new topology of two-stage cascaded switched-diode (CSD) multilevel inverter is proposed for medium-voltage renewable energy integration. First, it aims to reduce the number of switches along with its gate drivers. Thus, the installation space and cost of a multilevel inverter are reduced. The spike removal switch added in the first stage of the inverter provides a flowing path for the reverse load current, and as a result, high voltage spikes occurring at the base of the stepped output voltage based upon conventional CSD multilevel inverter topologies are removed. Moreover, to resolve the problems related to dc source fluctuations of multilevel inverter used for renewable energy integration, the clock phase-shifting (CPS) one-cycle control (OCC) is developed to control the two-stage CSD multilevel inverter. By shifting the clock pulse phase of every cascaded unit, the staircase-like output voltage waveforms are obtained and a strong suppression ability against fluctuations in dc sources is achieved. This paper proposes a hybrid pulse width modulation (PWM) based field weakening control strategy for a hybrid-inverter-driven open-winding (OW) permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system. The hybrid-inverter consists of two voltage source inverters, one is connected to a dc voltage source and named as main inverter (MI), and the other is connected to a floating capacitor and called compensation inverter (CI). A novel hybrid PWM technique is proposed for the hybrid-inverter, in which a double-vector-based PWM is applied to the MI to reduce the switching frequency, and the conventional space vector PWM is applied to the CI to compensate the reactive power. Furthermore, a field weakening (FW) control strategy based on the hybrid PWM technique is proposed to better utilize the dc-link voltage and extend the operation range of the OW-PMSM system. This paper proposes a generalized direct torque control (DTC) strategy for multilevel inverter fed DTC (MLI-DTC) drives. By using a simple voltage vector decomposition technique, the proposed method is compatible with inverters possessing any number of voltage levels. Consequently, voltage vectors are applied in a similar way as in the case of a two-level inverter fed DTC. A constant inverter switching frequency is imposed in the proposed method by using a torque regulator in place of the traditional torque hysteresis controller, which enables the application of two voltage vectors within one switching cycle. This also contributes to reduce the torque and flux ripples. Detailed design guidelines for the proposed torque regulator are provided. Experimental results obtained with a three-level neutral point clamped inverter show that the proposed MLI-DTC drive operates with low, constant switching frequency while alleviating torque and flux ripples under all operating conditions. As penetration of distributed generation increases, the electrical distribution networks may encounter several challenges mainly related to voltage control. The situation may deteriorate in case of a weak grid connected to an intermittent source such as photovoltaic (PV) generation. Fast varying solar irradiance can cause unacceptable voltage variations that may not be easily compensated by slow-responding utility equipment. The PV inverter can be used to control the grid voltage by injecting/absorbing reactive power. A small-signal model is derived in order to study the stability of a PV inverter exchanging reactive power with the grid. This paper also proposes a method that utilizes the available capacity of the PV inverter to support the grid voltage without violating the rating of the inverter and the maximum voltage that the inverter's switching device can withstand. A fully integrated on-board battery charger for future electric vehicles (EVs) has been recently introduced. It reutilizes all the propulsion components of an EV in charging/vehicle-to-grid (V2G) modes, it does not require any additional components or hardware reconfiguration, and charging/V2G modes are realized with zero electromagnetic torque production. Both fast (three-phase) and slow (single-phase) chargings are possible, with unity power factor operation at the grid side. The solution is based on the use of a triple three-phase machine and a nine-phase inverter/rectifier. This paper reports on the results of efficiency evaluation for the said system. Testing is performed using both a nine-phase induction machine and a nine-phase permanent magnet machine for a range of operating conditions in charging/V2G modes, with both three-phase and single-phase grid connection. Additionally, the impact of converter interleaving on the losses and efficiency is also studied. Losses are separated for different subsystems, thus providing an insight into the importance of optimization of different EV power train components from the efficiency point of view. For power conversion systems interfaced to four-wire supplies, four-leg converters have become a standard solution. A four-leg converter allows good compensation of zero-sequence harmonics and full utilisation of the dc-link voltage. These are very important features when unbalanced and/or nonlinear loads are connected to the system. This paper proposes a three-dimensional space vector modulation (SVM) algorithm and provides a comprehensive analysis of the algorithm implemented on a three-level, four-leg neutral-point-clamped converter. The algorithm allows a simple definition of the different switching patterns and enables balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages using the redundancies of the converter states. Non-salient permanent magnet machines are considered poor candidates for flux weakening operations due to their inherent low-inductance characteristics. In this paper, a two-pole 24-slot non-salient PM machine design is proposed that can utilize a winding switching technique to achieve wide speed range operation. A very wide speed range operation (from 3 to 1 ratio to as much as 13 to 1) is demonstrated. This is accomplished by simply rearranging the winding coils on the stator periphery. Moreover, a control strategy is proposed that not only utilizes the flux weakening using winding switching, but also flux weakening using a negative d-axis current to maximize the speed range of the machine. The machine is operated with two inverters to control the current in the machine winding over the entire speed range. A dq model for the machine is also presented. In this paper, a wind energy conversion system interfaced to the grid using a dual inverter is proposed. One of the two inverters in the dual inverter is connected to the rectified output of the wind generator while the other is directly connected to a battery energy storage system (BESS). This approach eliminates the need for an additional dc–dc converter and thus reduces power losses, cost, and complexity. The main issue with this scheme is uncorrelated dynamic changes in dc-link voltages that results in unevenly distributed space vectors. A detailed analysis on the effects of these variations is presented in this paper. Furthermore, a modified modulation technique is proposed to produce undistorted currents even in the presence of unevenly distributed and dynamically changing space vectors. In this paper, we present virtual prototyping of the distributed control for a modular multilevel inverter used as a grid-tie interface for photovoltaics. Due to the distributed control and inherent redundancy in the system composed of many panels and inverter modules, the system topology exhibits fault-tolerance capabilities that we study through virtual prototyping. The fault-tolerance is enabled by several distributed algorithms, such as services to identify which, if any, agents controlling inverter modules have failed. A distributed identifier algorithm allows the system to keep track of the number of operating panels to appropriately regulate the dc voltage output of the panels using buck–boost converters and determine appropriate switching times for H-bridges in the grid-tie. We evaluate the distributed inverter, its control strategy, and fault-tolerance through thousands of simulation scenarios in Mathworks Simulink/Stateflow. Our virtual prototyping framework allows for generating multilevel inverters composed of many inverter modules, and we evaluate inverters composed of five to dozens of inverter modules. Our analysis suggests the achievable total harmonic distortion of the modular multilevel inverter may allow for operating solar arrays in spite of failures of the power electronics, control software, and other subcomponents. This paper proposes a new modulation strategy that balances the neutral-point voltage for three-level neutral-clamped inverter systems. The proposed modulation replaces the P-type or N-type small switching states with other switching states that do not affect the neutral-point voltage. The zero and medium switching states are employed to help the neutral-point voltage balancing. This method little bit increases the switching events and output total harmonic distortion. However, this method has a strong balancing ability at all regions. Further, it is very simple to implement in both space vector modulation and carrier-based PWM methods. Open-end winding three-phase variable speed drives with dual-inverter supply have been extensively investigated for various applications, including series hybrid powertrains and propulsion motors. The topology is simple to realize while offering a higher number of switching states without the need for capacitor voltage balancing algorithms, when compared to the standard multilevel converters. This paper extends the open-end winding concept to a five-phase drive. A relatively simple space-vector modulation (SVM) algorithm, based on the already well-understood five-phase two-level drive SVM method, is developed. The proposed modulation technique has the advantage of being straightforward to implement and, like its two-level counterpart, is able to generate output voltages with minimum low-order harmonic content. The method generates up to 17-level output phase voltage and, therefore, offers superior harmonic performance when compared to the two-level five-phase modulation.
