Conventional model predictive control (MPC) for three-level active neutral point clamped converter (ANPC) utilizes weighting factors to achieve the optimal control of multiple control objectives in a single cost function. However, the selection of these weighting factors has an impact on the performance of the controlled objectives significantly. Tuning of weighting factors is usually tedious and lacks theoretical background. Moreover, the predictive and evaluation process for multiple objectives optimization have to be carried out by enumerating all admissible switching states within one loop. To simplify the complexity of this process and eliminate the effect of weighting factors, this paper proposes a cascaded predictive control scheme for a 3L-ANPC inverter fed induction machine (IM) drive. With the proposed approach, three separate cost functions for three control objectives, stator flux vector, neutral point voltage and device loss distribution are evaluated in a cascaded way, so that the optimization of these control objectives is performed independently. A 3L-ANPC inverter driven IM drive is studied in this paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results in different operating conditions confirm that the proposed method achieves satisfactory steady-state and transient performances comparable to the conventional predictive control approach. The weighting factors used in the conventional method are eliminated and the computational effort is reduced by 68% compared to the conventional method without any sacrifice in the drive performance. In this paper, a finite-control-set model predictive direct torque control (FCS-MPDTC) method is proposed to reduce the torque ripple of a segmented switched reluctance motor (SSRM) at the low-speed stage. Firstly, the prediction dynamic model is established, and the phase torque can be predicted by detecting phase current and rotor position signals. Then, the principle of power converter and selection of voltage vectors are introduced and presented. Considering torque ripple reduction, flux tracking performance and copper losses reduction, the cost function with phase torque, the amplitude of flux linkage and phase current, is established to select optimal voltage vector to control the power converter. In addition, the torque sharing function (TSF) is employed to distribute total torque to phase torque for further torque ripple reduction. Finally, the direct torque control (DTC) is selected as the comparison method, performance of MPDTC is verified by simulation and experiment results. This paper presents a dual-hysteresis band control method for multi-drive systems based on a nine-switch inverter. The drive system contains two independent three-phase induction motors fed by a nine-switch inverter. Independent control of torque, speed, and stator current of two load stages is achieved. The proposed strategy offers a reliable control operation of both induction machines under individual load profiles. Instead of using independent sets of three-phase voltage source converters, the nine-switch inverter is used to drive separate machines. Thus, the volume and size of the power stage are noticeably reduced due to the use of fewer semiconductors. The theoretical concept and design steps of the proposed method are presented. The performance of the closed-loop independent motor control scheme is experimentally validated using a 3.2 kW lab-scaled nine-switch inverter prototype and Altera Cyclone IV Field-programmable gate array. The main challenges for Finite Set-model Predictive Torque and Flux Control (MPTC) include huge calculation amount, large torque ripple, and the selection of weighting factor. To deal with these challenges and achieve the fastest torque response, a novel MPTC strategy with virtual voltage vector-based pattern is proposed in this paper. In each control period, a desired voltage vector is computed based on the maximum torque variation rate. The virtual desired voltage vector is combined by using basic voltage vectors with the minimum switching times. The switching pattern between two adjacent control periods is optimized by using a cost function in realtime. Compared with the traditional MPTC approach, the novel strategy has multifaceted improved performances: faster torque response, less calculation amount, lower switching frequency, reduced torque ripple, higher efficiency and no weighting factor. Switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives conventionally use current control techniques at low speed and voltage control techniques at high speed. However, these conventional methods usually fail to restrain the torque ripple, which is normally associated with this type of machine. Compared with conventional three-phase SRMs, higher phase SRMs have the advantage of lower torque ripple: To further reduce their torque ripple, this paper presents a control method for torque ripple reduction in six-phase SRM drives. A constant instantaneous torque is obtained by regulating the rotational speed of the stator flux linkage. This torque control method is subsequently developed for a conventional converter and a proposed novel converter with fewer switching devices. Moreover, modeling and simulation of this six-phase SRM drive system has been conducted in detail and validated experimentally using a 4.0-kW six-phase SRM drive system. Test results demonstrate that the proposed torque control method has outstanding performance of restraining the torque ripple with both converters for the six-phase SRM, showing superior performance to the conventional control techniques. This paper proposes a generalized direct torque control (DTC) strategy for multilevel inverter fed DTC (MLI-DTC) drives. By using a simple voltage vector decomposition technique, the proposed method is compatible with inverters possessing any number of voltage levels. Consequently, voltage vectors are applied in a similar way as in the case of a two-level inverter fed DTC. A constant inverter switching frequency is imposed in the proposed method by using a torque regulator in place of the traditional torque hysteresis controller, which enables the application of two voltage vectors within one switching cycle. This also contributes to reduce the torque and flux ripples. Detailed design guidelines for the proposed torque regulator are provided. Experimental results obtained with a three-level neutral point clamped inverter show that the proposed MLI-DTC drive operates with low, constant switching frequency while alleviating torque and flux ripples under all operating conditions. Conventional model-predictive torque control (MPTC) requires tedious and time-consuming tuning work for stator flux weighting factor, and presents relatively high torque ripples. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a model-predictive flux control (MPFC) for two-level inverter-fed induction motor (IM) drives. The references of stator flux magnitude and torque in conventional MPTC are converted into an equivalent reference of stator flux vector in the proposed MPFC. As only the tracking error of stator flux vector is required in the cost function, the use of weighting factor is eliminated. The optimal voltage vector is selected based on the principle of stator flux error minimization and its switching instant is optimized rather than being in the beginning of each control period. The proposed MPFC with and without switching instant optimization are both implemented in a 32-bit floating digital signal processor, and they are compared in detail in terms of torque ripple, current harmonics, and average switching frequency. Both digital simulations and experimental tests were carried out on a two-level inverter-fed IM drive, and the obtained results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
