Virtual synchronous generator (VSG)-based control approaches for AC machine drivers have attracted much attention in recent years. The contradiction between the strong motor loading capacity and the small DC voltage fluctuation is disregarded in previous studies. A larger virtual inertia is required to raise the torque gain and drive the motor with heavier loads, thus resulting in greater DC voltage variations. A systematic method is proposed for the optimal design of the virtual inertia for VSG-based motor starting systems to achieve the maximal motor loading capacity and the low DC voltage fluctuation in this paper. Firstly, the relationship between the virtual inertia and the loading capacity is revealed on the basis of the closed-loop analysis. Considering the DC voltage variation, the constraint on the maximal value of the virtual inertia is proposed from the energy-balance perspective despite the unknown contribution of the DC capacitors to the virtual inertia. To fully exploit the energy storage capacity of the DC capacitors and raise the upper limit of the virtual inertia under the same permitted DC voltage variation, a modified DC voltage reference is introduced. In renewable energy micro-source applications, a wide range of voltage conversion of the step-up converter is an essential part to equalize the typical low voltage of micro-source with DC-bus voltage of Inverter or motor drives. In order to meet this purpose, an ultra-voltage gain step-up DC-DC converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter has made an arrangement of the regenerative-boost fed switched inductor and capacitor configurations. Thereby, due to such an organization of structure, the proposed converter can develop an extremely high voltage-gain even at lower duty ratios. In addition, it has the advantage of lower switching stress across all power semi-conductive diodes. Furthermore, this paper describes the steady-state analysis and comparative features of the converter with existing recent literature. Finally, to validate theoretical analysis and test the feasibility and suitability of the proposed ultra-gain converter, the experimental results were observed by a 500 W fabricated prototype. The dc-dc converters with high step-up DC-voltage gain play a vital role in integrating low voltage DC sources. Though several converter topologies are reported in the recent past, attempts have been made to reduce the components, especially the switching devices, passive elements, converter losses, etc., of the converter. A novel DC-DC converter topology, viz., single switched impedance network (SSIN)-based converter with n-stage is proposed in this paper. The operation of the SSIN based converter in continuous and discontinuous conduction modes are discussed. The effect of parasitic elements on DC-voltage gain and efficiency of the SSIN is carried out. The small-signal model of the SSIN converter is derived. The performance of the SSIN converter is compared with the similar converter topologies. The 500 W prototypes of the SSIN with n = 1 and n = 2 are fabricated, and the experimental results are presented in this paper. To improve the converter performance, SiC-based semiconductor devices are used. The paper develops two computationally efficient models, namely a detailed equivalent model and an average-value model, with provisions for representation of the critical state of converter blocking, for modular multilevel converters with embedded storage. These models are indispensable in the simulation of dc faults. The developed detailed equivalent model provides accuracy that matches electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, with much reduced computational burden; the developed average-value model represents the averaged behavior of the converter by neglecting switching transients. Both models are extensively evaluated in the context of an HVDC system against benchmark results form a detailed switching model developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results confirm the validity and accuracy of the models for steady state, transient, and faulted operating conditions including when the converter is blocked in response to a dc fault. This paper proposes an improved SOC balancing strategy for the modular energy storage system (ESS) based on low bandwidth communication (LBC) technology, aiming at solving the drawbacks of the conventional balancing strategy based on droop control. The proposed control scheme can improve the SOC balancing efficiency and remove the current deviation by using the SOC slope-adjusting and current-shifting approaches simultaneously. The average value of SOC can be derived through the LBC line, and the droop coefficient based on SOC can be controlled in the local control layer. Thus, the SOC of each sub-module can converge to the average SOC value in system dynamic process, and the balancing speed under the condition of low SOC difference between sub-modules can be improved. Furthermore, the current regulation performance in steady and transient states can be enhanced by using the proposed method. An improved two-stage model predictive current control (MPCC) for three-phase three-level converters in the paper, which can simultaneously achieve common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction, effective dc-link capacitor voltage control, and decreased computational burden, is proposed. Compared to the other current control strategies, it has the capability of handling multiple control objectives and possesses a simple structure. Furthermore, it greatly reduces the CMV since the peak CMVs of all the candidate voltage vectors are constrained to be less than one sixth of the dc-link voltage. In addition, an optimal two-stage voltage vector selection mechanism is employed in the proposed method. It helps to significantly reduce the computational complexity. Differential power processing (DPP) converters have been developed for photovoltaic (PV) panels to preclude energy yield reduction due to partial shading. In large-scale PV systems comprising numerous series-connected panels, DPP converters with good modularity are preferable because the number of series-connected panels varies depending on applications. This paper proposes a switched capacitor converter (SCC)-based modular DPP architecture for large-scale PV systems. Four panels are grouped as a module, each having a panel-level DPP converter, and modules are connected in series to form a string. The design of the panel-level DPP converter is fixed while the system can be arbitrarily extended by stacking modules, achieving good modularity. Adjacent panel-level DPP converters are dc-coupled, by which modules can be connected using long cables, mitigating installation limitations. This paper proposes a novel dual input nine-level inverter (DINLI) topology which requires only seven controllable devices. The dual inputs are un-identical DC voltage sources in the ratio 1:3. A simple control scheme is derived by appropriately modifying the phase disposition pulse width modulation technique to generate high-quality 9-level output from the DINLI topology. At any given instant, a maximum of four switches conduct out of which only a maximum of two switches operate at high frequency, bringing down the switching and conduction losses significantly and improving the overall system efficiency. The bidirectional DINLI (BDINLI) topology with reactive power capability can be realized by replacing the unidirectional devices with the controlled switches (i.e., total nine switches). In addition, the proposed DINLI topology does not require extra voltage balancing circuits which further improves the efficiency. The DINLI operation is verified through MATLAB simulations for grid-connected applications and its extension to an n-level, 3-phase application is also investigated. This paper presents a single-objective model predictive control for a bidirectional DC-DC flying capacitor (FC) converter, which integrates a battery to the microgrid. The presence of multiple FCs facilitates the converter to interface a low-voltage battery to a high-voltage DC bus at reduced voltage stress on its power switches. However, such converter requires a controller that fulfils multiple objectives, namely DC bus and FC voltage regulations, and bidirectional power flow. The key feature of the proposed controller is that it utilizes a model predictive control with a single-objective cost function based on battery current and a redundant state selection scheme to attain these multiple objectives. Adopting such a strategy not only reduces computational burden but also eliminates the need for weighting factors and requirement of complex numerical models for its estimation. Another notable aspect is that the controller employs an improved dynamic reference model to generate appropriate battery current reference for the DC bus voltage regulation, without necessitating a secondary control loop and additional current sensors. Finally, experimental results of the proposed system for a step-response of the DC bus voltage, varying PV power, and loads are validated and compared against finite control set model predictive control. Modular multilevel converters have become the technology of choice in high voltage direct current systems. They are composed of a large number of submodules, which poses significant computational challenges to electromagnetic transient simulations. To address this issue, scholars proposed several approaches that are a trade-off between simulation accuracy and computational burden, which mainly achieve numerical efficiency by adopting reduced and simplified models of the converter arm submodules. This paper proposes a different simulation paradigm based on sub-circuit isomorphism. It is suited for the analysis of intrinsically modular electronic circuits, as it exploits the common behavior of structurally identical submodules by clustering them together. This method does not require any simplification of the submodule electrical model and minimizes the number of equations to be solved at each time step of the time domain analysis, thereby significantly reducing the computational effort. Thus, this method is suitable for thorough simulations of ac/dc networks, which may require the implementation of detailed transistor-level representations of the converter submodules. This paper presents a new single-source three-phase seven-level inverter with an inherent three-time voltage boosting capability for medium-voltage applications. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of two switched-capacitor (SC) networks with an added half-bridge module per phase. Each of such integrated SC networks requires a single capacitor associated with three active power switches. The three-time voltage boosting feature of the proposed topology can reduce the dc-link voltage requirements by 50% in comparison to the traditional neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors, active NPC (ANPC), hybrid clamped ANPC, and cascaded H-bridge topologies, and 75% to advanced ANPC topologies. It can also reduce the number of required switches and capacitors as well as their voltage stresses compared to those state-of-the-art topologies reported in the literature. By integrating “n” number of added SC networks in the proposed seven-level basic topology, the number of output voltage levels can be extended to 2n+3 per phase. A finite control set model predictive control algorithm is also derived to control the converter in both the active and reactive power exchanges modes without distorting the generated grid current quality. The capacitor voltage balancing is inherent in the proposed topology, and thus, there is no need for any additional voltage balancing circuit, which further reduces the control complexity. A dynamic model of a battery is required for the appropriate real-time control during charging/discharging process. Present paper considers the development of nonlinear Dynamic Equivalent Electric Circuit Model (DEECM) of a Valve Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) battery based on the data obtained through the experimentation and the available datasheet information. Cases of charging, discharging, and the self-discharging are considered for 12V, 26Ah VRLA battery at room temperature. Accordingly, experimental ${\boldsymbol{v}} - {\boldsymbol{i}}$ characteristics of the battery are used to express the nonlinear model parameters as a function of measurable battery current and estimated open-circuit voltage as a part of parameter estimation. Conventionally, the converter of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is fed by the uncontrollable diode bridge rectifier (DBR), which leads to a low grid-side power factor (PF) and high current total harmonic distortion (THD). In this paper, an alternative solution for the grid-connected high-speed SRM drive system with improved PF is proposed. In the proposed drive system, the three-level active front end (AFE) is connected in cascade with the midpoint converter for SRM operation. A centralized strategy, which controls the AFE and SRM together, is proposed to govern the motor speed and grid-side PF by regulating the real power and reactive power of the system, respectively. Specifically, the real power, reactive power, and the voltage balancing of split capacitors are controlled by the model predictive directed power control (MP-DPC) algorithm, which significantly reduces the control complexity and guarantees the fast dynamic response. Consequently, satisfying speed regulation, high PF, low current THD, and bi-directional power-transfer capability are achieved. A new transformer-less three-level grid-tied inverter is proposed in this article. By employing the switched-capacitor (SC) modules, a new topology is derived. The proposed topology has some features which are high efficiency, the capability of voltage boosting without utilization of any additional boost stage, and suppressing the leakage current by using common grounded strategy. In this article, a peak current control is employed to generate the gate pulses of power semiconductor switches and adjustment of both active and reactive powers. By doing so, the grid injected current is controlled and adjusted to have a proper quality. The operation modes, design consideration, and a comparison with some recently proposed grid-connected topologies are done through this paper. A modulated model predictive controller is designed for an inductor-less modular multilevel converter targeting an MVDC solid-state transformer application. The underlying optimization problem is formulated such that a unique closed-form solution is derived from a highly accurate dynamic system model, which significantly reduces computation time. Unlike other closed-form methods, the proposed controller achieves inductor-less current control, has a reduced sampling speed enabled by a novel model-based circulating energy compensator, and does not require tuned PI controllers to generate current references. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves transient power flow control and steady state circulating energy control despite the low system inertia. The use of distributed maximum power point tracking (DMPPT) algorithms is spreading because of their higher efficiency in the case of partial shading. The possibility of integrating photovoltaic (PV) modules in a modular multilevel converter (MMC) connected to the grid has been proposed in recent literature with the advantage of integrating DMPPT algorithms. In the case of partial shading, circulating currents control is necessary to extract the maximum available power and inject symmetric currents in the grid. Novel control strategies for both the ac and dc circulating current components of a three-phase MMC-based PV were proposed and analyzed in this work. Thanks to the presence of a capacitor connected to the dc-side of the MMC, the ac circulating currents could freely be controlled to extract the maximum power from all the PV modules in any irradiance condition while maintaining low power losses. Moreover, in contrast to previous works, instead of measuring the active power of legs and compensating for their imbalance using open-loop control, the power leg mismatches are compensated exploiting the dc loop currents generated through closed loop controls. Model predictive control has emerged as a promising approach to govern modular multilevel converters (MMCs), due to its flexibility to include multiple control objectives and simple design process. However, this control scheme presents relevant issues, such as high computational complexity and variable switching frequency. This work proposes a sequential phase-shifted model predictive control (PS-MPC) for MMCs. The key novelty of this proposal lies in the way the predictive control strategy is formulated to fully exploit a phase-shifted pulsewidth modulation technique through an appropriate choice of synchronized average models for each carrier. In this way, the proposed predictive controller obtains independent optimal modulating signals for each carrier in a sequential manner, by solving an optimization problem with reduced computational effort independent of the number of submodules. This sequential optimization allows one to formulate the optimal control problem to achieve multiple control objectives, similarly to the finite-control-set MPC (FCS-MPC). Nevertheless, the MMC governed with the proposed PS-MPC generates an output voltage with fix-spectrum and operates with an even power loss distribution among semiconductors in steady-state, outperforming the standard FCS-MPC strategy.
