Multiphase (more than three-phase electric power) electric drive system is the focus of a significant research in the last decade. Multiphase power transmission system is also investigated in the literature because multiphase transformers are needed at the input of rectifiers. In the multiphase power transmission and multiphase rectifier systems, the number of phases investigated is a multiple of three. However, the variable speed multiphase drive system considered in the literature are mostly of five, seven, nine, eleven, twelve, and fifteen phases. Such multiphase drive systems are invariably supplied from power electronic converters. In contrast, this paper proposes technique to obtain seven-phase output from three-phase supply system using special and novel transformer connections. Thus, with the proposed technique, a pure seven-phase sine-wave voltage/current is obtained, which can be used for motor testing purposes. In addition, a seven-phase power transmission and rectifier system may benefit from the proposed connection scheme. Complete design and testing of the proposed solution is presented. This paper develops a coordination control strategy for wind farms with line commutated converter-based HVdc delivery for participating in inertial response and primary frequency control. The coordination philosophy is to feedback the grid frequency and its derivative and adjust the delivery power of the HVdc link according to the feedback signals. The feedback loop employing the derivative of the grid frequency aims to improve the inertial response while the feedback loop employing the grid frequency deviation introduces a droop at the rectifier control loop. When the grid frequency is too high or too low, active power flow through the HVdc link will be ramped down or up. In turn, the wind generation will increase or decrease the blade angles to reduce or increase the captured wind power through pitch control. A case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the inertial enhancement and frequency droop in HVdc control. Simulation results in transient security assessment tool are given. Due to the high integration of renewable energy, the power systems may become more susceptible to unbalanced grid voltages, grid frequency disturbances, harmonic resonances and others. Therefore, several works have pointed out that the ancillary services provided by the energy storage systems can minimize these issues. The combination of energy storage and static synchronous compensators (ES-STATCOM) has been proposed to reduce the cost. Modular multilevel converters (MMC) are featured as a good solution for ES-STATCOM realization, due to their high efficiency, modularity and inherent fault-tolerant structure. However, the study of the integration of the MMC based ES-STATCOM in a complex power system composed of power electronic converters, transmission system, renewable plants, transformers, etc, leads to a high computational burden. Therefore, this work presents a detailed design and implementation of three efficient simulation models of the MMC ES-STATCOM. The performance of these models compared during a grid frequency support case study by a 100 MVA/33 kV ES-STATCOM. In addition, the performance of these models is evaluated during a battery charging process and a grid symmetrical fault. The models are compared through the following aspects: processing time, normalized integral of absolute error, state-of-charge estimation and active and reactive power dynamic response. Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) still shares a large part in today's wind power market. It provides the benefits of variable speed operation cost-effectively, and can control its active and reactive power independently. Crowbar protection is often adopted to protect the rotor-side voltage source converter (VSC) from transient overcurrent during grid voltage dip. But under unbalanced grid voltage condition, the severe problems are not the transient overcurrent, but the electric torque pulsation and dc volt- age ripple in the back-to-back VSCs. This paper develops dynamic models in MATLAB/Simulink, validates it through experiments, investigates the behavior of DFIG during unbalanced grid voltage condition, and proposes new controllers in separated positive and negative sequence. Methods to separate positive and negative sequence components in real time are also developed, and their responses to unsymmetrical voltage dip are compared. Simulation results prove that the separated positive and negative sequence controllers limit the torque pulsation and dc voltage ripple effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-power synchronous motor drives are usually fed from naturally commutated cycloconverters. The output voltage of the cycloconverter contains interharmonics/subharmonics which affect the power quality and restrict the allowable frequency range. Further, a practical circulating current-free cycloconverter usually gives rise to stator current discontinuities The present paper deals with a simulation method to study the performance of a cycloconverter-fed synchronous motor drive in the presence of interharmonics/subharmonics taking into account the discontinuities in the output current as well as the effect of ripple in the output current on the input current of the cycloconverter. Interharmonics in output phase voltage, output phase current, input supply current, and the field current are estimated and verified with experimental results on a laboratory prototype. The significanct oscillating torque components due to these inter- harmonics are identified in a typical case. The simulation results are useful in power quality studies for such drives and in devising methods for suppression of these interharmonics/subharmonics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A hybrid converter system employing a combination of a load-commutated inverter (LCI), a dc-dc buck converter, and a voltage-source inverter (VSI) is proposed for the large induction motor drives. The VSI ensures the safe commutation of the LCI with active commutation angle control over all speed regions. By replacing capacitor banks and a forced dc-commutation circuit, this system can eliminate all drawbacks related to these circuits in the conventional LCI-based induction motor drives. Sinusoidal motor current and voltage waveforms are achieved with the VSI providing the reactive and harmonic power to the motor, resulting in high-performance drives. The buck converter enables both the VSI and the LCI to be fed from the single-diode rectifier. As a result, the dc-link inductor size can be reduced and the LCI is operated without the controlled rectifier. In addition, faster dynamic response can be obtained through the VSI and the buck converter operation. Finally, the buck converter performs the dc-link current control to ensure minimum VSI rating. The feasibility of the proposed hybrid circuit for the high-power drive systems is verified by computer simulation for a 500-hp induction motor. Experimental results are also included for a 1-hp induction motor laboratory setup controlled by the proposed hybrid system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
