In this paper, the boundary discretization method is used to improve the traditional subdomain model. The improved model can be used to calculate the magnetic field distribution in the region containing non-orthogonal boundary, avoiding the influence of the simplified stator slot or permanent magnet shape on the results in calculating the motor magnetic field using the traditional subdomain model. In addition, the improved subdomain model can also be used to calculate the air-gap flux density when the rotor is eccentric, instead of segmenting the air-gap to an equivalent state without eccentricity. The calculation object of this paper is a surface-mount permanent magnet motor with a rectangular stator slot. The air-gap flux density under no-load and load conditions is calculated, respectively. Since the improved subdomain model does not need to simplify the stator slot shape, the magnetic potential in the stator slot is also calculated. Finally, the air-gap flux density under rotor eccentricity is calculated, and the influence of the calculating parameters on the results of the improved subdomain model is discussed. In this paper, a nonlinear analysis model for predicting the performance of eddy current recoil brakes (ECRB) is proposed by combining the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model and the subdomain model. The subdomain model introduces the equivalent region to improve the inherent shortcomings of the equivalent current sheet (ECS) method. The outer tube is divided into a magnetic saturated region and an unsaturated region in the subdomain model to simulate the magnetic saturation of the outer tube during recoil. The MEC model is applied to calculate the air gap magnetic flux density and the relative permeability of the equivalent region. Leakage flux and magnetic saturation are considered in the MEC model. The eddy current resistance of ECRB is calculated by the subdomain model. The model is verified by the finite element model, and it is able to predict the performance of ECRB with different structural parameters. In addition, the prototype of the ECRB was manufactured. This paper presents an analytical approach to determine the air-gap magnetic field and the winding inductance in the brushless doubly-fed reluctance machine (BDFRM) with flux barriers. By dividing one flux guide layer into several segments, a calculus method based on magnetic circuit analysis is developed and specific analytical expression of the air-gap flux density is rigorously derived. Then, the included angle between fundamental components with the same pole pairs is also discussed. Based on the air-gap flux density distribution, the inductance expressions between different windings are also presented. Three kinds of finite element analysis models are established and studied. A comparative study of new partitioned stator hybrid excitation axial flux switching permanent magnet (HEAFSPM) motors with different partitioned excitation stator topologies for in-wheel traction applications is presented in this paper. The realization approaches of the partitioned stator HEAFSPM motor are discussed, and the motor topology with windings and permanent magnets (PMs) separately setting on different stators is selected in view of the advantageous structure for thermal management. On this basis, two partitioned excitation stator topologies including C-type tooth core and T-type tooth core stator configuration are proposed, and the air-gap flux modulation and flux regulation principle of the motors are analyzed. In addition, the design method of the partitioned stator HEAFSPM motor considering the effect of hybrid excitation sources is provided, and the two motors with different tooth cores are designed respectively. Meanwhile, for a fair comparison, the multiple objectives optimization method coupled with the sensitivity analysis is employed to optimize the two motors. The electromagnetic performances, anti-demagnetization capability, and flux regulation performance of the two motors are all investigated in detail. This paper proposed a hybrid subdomain model (HSM) for calculating the magnetic field distribution of interior permanent-magnet (IPM) machine accounting for slotting effect, rotor saliency, and iron nonlinearity. In the constant permeability region, i.e., slots, slot-opening, and air-gap, three subdomains are introduced to represent their magnetic field. By applying the subdomains interface conditions and nonlinear boundary conditions, the analytical air-gap field solution can be obtained based on the governing Laplace and Poisson equation. For the iron region, the magnetic reluctance network (MRN) is proposed to account for rotor saliency iron and nonlinearity. The magnetic voltage source is introduced to represent the permanent-magnet (PM) while the air-gap flux source is used to replace the air-gap reluctance network, which is the key to guarantee the computational efficiency and high accuracy. The electromagnetic performances of both flat-shaped and V-shaped IPM machines are investigated to show the advantages of different IPM machine topologies analytically. Performance prediction of induction machines (IMs) is highly dependent on the accuracy of the material characteristics and geometry of the machine during the modeling stage. To reduce the complexity of an IM model, normally the slotting effects are neglected. Likewise, the permeability of the stator and rotor cores are assumed to be infinite leading to an ideal set of partial differential equations (PDEs) for homogenous and isotropic materials. In this paper, the permeability of the stator and rotor cores are assumed not to be infinite and the slotting effects are taken into consideration to propose a more accurate and realistic model of an IM to reduce the discrepancies between the performance expectations and actual results. Fourier-based (FB) magnetic field approach is used to fulfill this aim via anisotropic layer theory (ALT) enabling the proposed model to include distortion of magnetic flux in the slotted regions. Accurate and computationally-efficient models of induction machines (IMs) are essential for many simulation programs and analysis of power systems transients. Conventionally, when modeling magnetic saturation in the classical qd0 models, only the fundamental component of magnetizing flux is considered. To represent the saturation air-gap flux harmonics, fairly complicated phase-domain and/or implicit models have been proposed in the prior literature. In this paper, a new explicit two-axis IM model is developed to include the air-gap harmonics caused by magnetic saturation. The new model is validated by experimental measurements and simulations in various steady state and transient scenarios and is shown to provide accurate results while being simple to implement. In this paper, superposition methods including the superposition of a single stator tooth and the superposition of a single rotor tooth, are proposed to predict the open-circuit performances of flux-reversal permanent magnet (FRPM) machines. By the proposed superposition methods, the electromagnetic performances, such as air-gap flux density, electromotive force, cogging torque, and unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP) are investigated and verified by 2D finite element analysis (FEA). Further, according to the superposition methods, cogging torque reduction techniques can be acquired from both stator side and rotor side. In addition, the influence of stator-slot/rotor-pole-pairs (slot/pole) combination on UMP is also studied, and consequently, a reasonable slot/pole combination rule is suggested to avoid UMP. Then, an improved configuration for UMP reduction is also investigated and verified by FEA. For a marine electrical machine, its high power density and large electromagnetic (EM) load tend to bring high saturation to the magnetic circuit. When the non-linearity of ferromagnetic material is not taken into consideration, large errors will appear in the calculation of air-gap flux density and EM force wave. Considering the radial and tangential EM force waves that cause the stator core to vibrate and deform are the primary sources of EM vibration of a non-salient pole synchronous generator (NSPSG), this paper introduces a semi-analytical method of calculating the radial and tangential EM force waves, with the non-linearity of ferromagnetic material taken into account. The method includes the distributed magnetic circuit method (DMCM), the separation variable method (SVM) and the complex variable conformal transformation method (CVCTM). First of all, the radial air-gap flux density is obtained by using the DMCM to calculate the no-load magnetic circuit of the NSPSG and dealing with the non-linearity of ferromagnetic material by B-H curve. Then, the tangential air-gap flux density is calculated by the SVM and the complex relative air-gap permeance is calculated by the CVCTM to determine the effect of slotting. Finally, the radial and tangential EM force waves are obtained by Maxwell stress tensor method. The proposed semi-analytical method is verified through measuring vibration acceleration of the NSPSG. This paper proposes a monolayer Halbach array based permanent magnet spherical motor (PMSpM) using cubic permanent magnets (PM). The research aims to provide a fast computing model to calculate the magnetic field for this PMSpM, which helps for future PMSpM optimization and control study. Three thickness equivalence principles are provided and compared for cubic PMs. The magnetic scalar potential is introduced, and the spherical harmonics expansion is implemented for rotor magnetic field analysis. Engineering revision is used to reduce the Legendre function deviation in polar angle direction. Torques and forces are deduced using the Lorentz force law, and relatively simple models of this PMSpM for both magnetic fields and torques are acquired. In addition, a prototype motor has been developed, and the analytic results of air-gap flux density and torque are compared with their finite element simulation and experimental results, which are proved consistent. It is concluded that the fundamental component of the spherical harmonics can be used to present the magnetic field model, which uses fewer integrals than the Biot-Savart law based solution, and the modeling results of the magnetic field flux density, forces and torques are in line with the expectations. Flux-modulation machines operate based on the so-called magnetic-gear effect. The modulator of the flux-modulation machine is one of the key elements. In this paper, a design method to obtain the distribution of modulators on split-pole flux-modulation machine is proposed to improve output performance. First, the operation principle of the flux-modulation machine is briefly discussed. Then, taking surface-mounted flux-modulation machines as examples, the air-gap flux density model is established by taking the distribution of the modulator into account. Besides, the formula of back-electromotive force of the flux-modulation machine is derived for both concentrated and distributed windings to determine the modulator distribution. Then, according to extreme equation, the optimal pole arc coefficient and distribution of the modulators can be obtained. To solve the problem that coupled magnetic flux and saturation of active magnetic bearing (AMB) cannot be taken into account in the traditional magnetic circuit calculation method together, this paper proposes a novel analytical calculation method based on distributed magnetic circuit method (DMCM). First, a magnetic circuit model with multiple magnetic circuits is built, we can obtain the initial flux density of each section by magnetic circuit calculation. Next, the magnetomotive force (MMF) of each magnetic circuit is calculated by the B-H curve of the ferromagnetic material. Then, the air-gap flux density under each magnetic pole center is obtained by further iterative calculations according to the magnetic potential error. On the basis, the flux density distribution along the air-gap circumference is obtained by one-dimensional (1D) relative permeance function, and thus the bearing capacity is derived and a loss calculation method is introduced. In this paper, an improved magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model of a coreless axial-flux permanent-magnet synchronous machine (AFPMSM) with printed circuit board (PCB) winding is presented, which considers the curvature effect, fringing effect, leakage flux, and rotor yoke's magnetic saturation. The axial air-gap flux density distribution, no-load back electromotive force, winding inductances, and electromagnetic torque are predicted by the proposed MEC model. The steady-state performances of the machine under heavy load, as well as the dynamic response of the machine with a connected voltage source and mechanical load, are calculated. All the results obtained from the proposed model are in good agreement with those issued from the 3D finite element method (FEM). The computation time of the proposed model is greatly reduced compared to 3D FEM. Large medium-voltage electric machine stators are usually equipped with form wound coils made of flat conductors (strands) and embedded in open (rectangular) slots. Air-gap magnetic flux lines can enter the slot and, sweeping the strands placed nearest the slot opening, induce eddy currents in them. Such eddy currents cause additional losses which can be much higher than usual skin-effect and proximity losses. In order to avoid dangerous overheating and hot spots, the additional losses in question need to be carefully predicted in the design stage. Time-stepping finite-element analysis (TSFEA) can be used for the purpose, which however implies a large computational burden and requires the machine geometry to be modeled in detail. This article proposes alternative methods based on time-harmonic finite-element analysis (THFEA) simulations performed on highly simplified machine models and with no need to take rotor motion into account. Permanent magnet adjustable speed drive (PMASD) has been widely applied to regulate the speeds of large pumps and fans for energy-saving. For improving the torque density and simplifying the actuator of traditional PMASD, a novel squirrel-cage rotor (SCR-) PMASD with a non-rotary mechanical flux adjuster (MFA) is proposed in this paper. An analytical model considering the slot effect and the MFA shifting is established to analyze the magnetic field and the output torque efficiently for the initial design of the proposed drive. The air-gap flux density distributions obtained by the analytical model are verified by two-dimensional (2D-) finite element analysis (FEA). During the speed regulation process, the torque characteristics, power, loss, and efficiency of the drive under different MFA shifting distances are compared with the 2D-FEA and experimental results. Since the linear induction motor commonly work with a laterally asymmetric secondary as it is applied to pull rail vehicles, this paper presents a complete equivalent circuit model considering the asymmetry to predict thrust, vertical and transversal forces. First, six correction factors are presented to quantify the variations in the air-gap magnetic flux and secondary induced current as the linear induction motor operating with a laterally asymmetric secondary. Second, it develops a circuit model based on the existing T-model for the rotary induction motor and two correction factors for the magnetizing branch, which is used to indicate the electromagnetic variations in the air-gap flux and secondary plate due to the asymmetry. Third, the mathematical expressions for the thrust, vertical and transversal forces are derived by applying the equivalent circuit model. Then, the six correction factors are calculated with a prototype motor, and the results of them are comprehensively analyzed. Finally, the characteristics in the prototype motor are calculated with the mathematical expressions in a range of rated speed, and validated by the experimental measurements carried out on a test rig and line for linear motors. It is known that the slot frequency vibration is the one of the main components in electromagnetic vibration spectrum of permanent magnet DC motors (PMDCM). After finding that the vibration reduction scheme of the piecewise varying pole width (PVPW) is only effective for the odd order harmonic of slot frequency vibrations by analytical method, the PM pole with sawtooth edge is put forward to reduce all harmonic components of slot frequency vibrations of PMDCM. In this article, after the air gap flux density and radial force density are analyzed, the two vibration sources, radial force and bending moment, are derived for the motor with sawtooth edge poles (SEP). Then the optimized pole shape is obtained to reduce all harmonic components of both the radial force and bending moment at the same time. Three dimensional finite element method of electromagnetic field and structure are used to calculate the magnetic flux density, radial force and vibration for the motors of PVPW and SEP. Three permanent magnet motors with fixed pole width (FPW), PVPW and SEP are manufactured and tested. The comparison and verification show that SEP is better than the other two schemes in general. A portable flux probe is proposed and investigated in this article to detect turn-to-turn fault in the rotor poles of the high rated salient pole synchronous machines. The rotor circuit is fed by a low amplitude sinusoidal voltage source with a fixed voltage amplitude which has a frequency more than a few hundred Hz to achieve the higher reaction of the shorted turns on the faulty pole, which results in a significant reduction of the magnetic flux in the air-gap. Numerous simulations and experimental tests are carried out to investigate the proposed probe and the related technique performance to specify the faulty pole versus the number of shorted turns, applied frequency and probable eccentricity in the rotor position. The obtained test results show that all stable turn to turn faults (weak or heavy ones) can be specified easily by applying a portable sinusoidal voltage source with the frequency in the range of more than a few hundred Hz. The experimental test results validate that the flux density can be reduced to about zero in the faulty pole face, even in the case of one shorted turn in the sample machine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an analytical model for analyzing the electromagnetic performance of axial flux permanent magnet machines (AFPMMs) with the coexistence of static rotor radial deviation and angular eccentricity. Firstly, a quasi-3-D analytical model for the healthy AFPMMs is established using the scalar potential. Then, the analytical model of AFPMMs with the mixed eccentricity is derived by the coordinate transformation and air gap length function. The end effect under the mixed eccentricity is considered by an end coefficient, which improves the accuracy of back EMF by 1.3%. Based on the analytical model, the air gap flux density distribution, back EMF and cogging torque of AFPMMs with different rotor radial distances and angular eccentricities are calculated and compared with the corresponding results obtained by finite element analysis (FEA). The proposed model has higher analysis speed and less computer performance requirement than FEA with the similar accuracy. According to the results, the back EMF reduces obviously as the rotor radial deviation distance increases, and the back EMF almost unchanged as the angular eccentricity becomes serious. This article proposes a novel analytical model which combines subdomain method and magnet equivalent circuit (MEC) method to predict the cogging torque of surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) motors with rotor eccentricity and magnet defects in any slot-pole combination cases. Firstly, the general solution of open-circuit magnetic field distribution in a slotless SPM motor with magnet defects is derived. Then, the motor is divided into several subdomains along the air-gap circumferential direction to consider the non-uniform air-gap caused by rotor eccentricity, where the air-gap lengths of each subdomain are considered to be uniform. Finally, the methods of conformal mapping and MEC combined with equivalent current is used to consider the effect of slotting and saturation, which is beneficial to improve the calculation precision. The magnetic field distributions and cogging torque calculated by the proposed model are consistent with the results of finite element analysis (FEA). Compared with the FEA, the proposed model can perform fast calculations of air-gap flux density and cogging torque under rotor eccentricity and magnet defects for SPM motors, which can be utilized for optimizing the motor towards fault tolerance. The fault-tolerant capability is a prerequisite for electrical safety-critical applications. In this regard, multi-phase induction motors are well-known actuators used to provide this feature. Compared to conventional three-phase machines with distributed windings, induction machines having concentrated windings could be more fault-tolerant because of increasing the number of phases. In addition, concentrated windings have shorter end-winding and less required copper weight which makes it a lower cost solution compared to distributed windings. However, concentrated windings adversely increase the distortion of the air gap flux density which affects motor performances. In this paper, a pseudo-concentrated winding layout has been proposed for six-phase squirrel-cage induction motors to improve performances compared to conventional concentrated windings. Winding function and equivalent circuit methods are used to analytically calculate performances. This paper proposes the design method using a numerical formula known as the Advanced Inverse Cosine Function (AICF) to reduce vibration of the Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM). The proposed method reduces the vibration by modifying the rotor shape based on the numerical formula that makes the air-gap flux density sinusoidal under certain load condition. The radial electromagnetic force that is the source causing the vibration of the motor is related to the air-gap flux density under load condition. Therefore, the AICF which reduces the magnitude of the harmonic of the air-gap flux density is derived in this paper and the radial electromagnetic force due to the harmonic of the air-gap flux density decreases applying the AICF. To verify the validity of the proposed method, an 8 pole 12 slot prototype applied with the AICF is proposed. Using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA), the radial electromagnetic force and the displacement of the prototype with the AICF are compared with those of the normal model without the AICF. This article proposes an enhanced-torque switched reluctance motor with two sets of permanent magnets (PM-SRM) embedded inside the stator yoke and the end teeth of the neighboring modules. The PMs contribute to intensify the air-gap flux density and reduce the magnetic saturation in the stator poles. As a result, the output torque can be enhanced to a significant extent. The working principle of the proposed PM-SRM is clarified using its magnetic circuit model (MCM). The characteristics of the PM-SRM are obtained and compared with classical 12/8 and 6/5 SRMs and hybrid reluctance motors (HRMs) in terms of static and average torque and average torque per PMs volume. The steady-state performance of the PM-SRM in terms of current and torque waveforms is carried out, and the PM-SRM is compared with considered SRMs and HRMs in terms of output torque, power, and efficiency. All the comparisons demonstrate the out-performance of the proposed PM-SRM over other SRMs and HRMs. To validate the simulation results, a prototype of the PM-SRM is manufactured and the experimental results are obtained. This article presents an improved virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control strategy of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) during symmetrical voltage fault. Based on VSG control, DFIG can behave like a conventional synchronous generator (SG), which can support frequency and voltage in grid-connected mode. Moreover, when microgrid disconnects from grid, DFIG can provide voltage and power for local loads. However, during symmetrical voltage fault, the transient components in DFIG cannot be controlled properly by VSG. To solve this problem, the air-gap flux feedback is designed in VSG control to accelerate the decay of transient components, and rotor current limiting method is also introduced in the article. In the proposed method, there is no need to switch the control structure or control targets. DFIG always works in the VSG control. Therefore, DFIG can operate in the standalone mode when the connection to grid is cut off. The decay time constant, the voltage control, current limiting control and parameter variation of the improved VSG control are analyzed in detail. An effective analytical model of permanent magnet linear synchronous machine (PMLSM) is proposed in this paper, which considers the end effect by adding virtual slots and the slotting effect by adopting relative air-gap permeance. To employ this model, the open-circuit air-gap flux density of a slotless PMLSM with virtual slots is firstly predicted by Subdomain (SD) method, and then the complex relative air-gap permeance is introduced based on conformal mapping. By multiplying these two quantities, the open-circuit air-gap flux density of actual slotted PMLSM can be obtained. The phase flux linkage, back-EMF and detent force can be predicted accordingly. Moreover, the detent force is more easily depressed by optimizing the end teeth and slots via the proposed method. This article focuses on a Transverse Flux Permanent Magnet generator which benefits from Halbach-array permanent magnets. In this topology, a sinusoidal air-gap flux is achieved and thus, lower THD content and cogging torque is resulted. The Transverse flux generators can be a proper choice for direct drive, low speed, and high torque density applications such as wind turbines. Regarding the available small scale turbines in the market, an operating point is chosen for the proposed machine. The problem of a high torque density generator is thermal stresses which should be taken into consideration in the design and modeling process. Precise thermal modeling at the design stage can take the risk of the increase in machine temperature. Using an active component meshed model by considering the localized losses along with a lumped parameter circuit for the unmeshed parts is proposed for the understudy machine. A 3 kW, 320 rpm generator is designed and analyzed by considering the electromagnetic and thermal properties. Five-phase electric machines possess several distinct features and are sometimes considered in vehicular power systems and various special-purpose energy sources. Design and analysis of such machine-converter systems are highly dependent on simulation software programs, where accurate and numerically efficient dynamic models of five-phase synchronous machines are essential. Depending on levels of fidelity and interfacing compatibility, the traditional models for five-phase machines include the coupled-circuit-phase-domain (CCPD) and qd0 models. To achieve a computationally-efficient model suitable for many simulation programs, in this paper, a new constant-parameter voltage-behind-reactance (CPVBR) model is proposed for five-phase synchronous machines where a simple interfacing circuit is achieved with constant RL branches. The proposed model is validated by experimental measurements and simulation studies. This paper proposes a novel mesh-based equivalent magnetic network (EMN) model for performance analysis and optimal design of permanent magnet (PM) machines. The key contribution of the EMN model is that a generalized air-gap model solution is proposed by considering the machine motion of PM machines. Meanwhile, a modular modeling method is presented, and then the optimal design of PM machines can be investigated without repetitive programming and modeling. Two kinds of mesh elements are comprehensively utilized in the EMN model, and a hybrid rotor PM (HRPM) machine with interior PM and surface PM configuration is selected as an example to illustrate the development processes of EMN model. Meanwhile, the electromagnetic characteristics of HRPM machine are calculated by the proposed EMN model, such as back electromotive force, air-gap flux density distribution, and average torque. In this paper, by solving the Maxwell's equations, an analytical model is developed for the prediction of the air gap flux density in the eccentric permanent magnet (PM)-inset machines at no-load and on-load conditions. Since in this model neither Schwartz–Christoffel transformation nor perturbation analysis is used, it is fast and accurate. In the modeling process, the stator of the eccentric machine is replaced with an equivalent surface current (ESC), which is injected at the stator bore. Distribution of the ESC is unknown and must be selected, such that the resultant tangential field satisfies the boundary condition at the stator bore contour. To apply this condition, the flux density of the PMs, armature current, and the ESC are obtained by applying the subdomain analysis and using a conformal transformation. The armature current and ESC are considered as a surface current sheet at the stator bore. The back electromotive force and inductances of the eccentric machine are obtained in the proposed model. In addition, using the Maxwell stress tensor, the unbalanced magnetic force, and the electromagnetic torque are computed. Finally, the model is verified by means of finite element analysis. An axial-flux permanent-magnet (PM)-assisted claw-pole generator (APCG) is designed based on an equivalent magnetic circuit model (EMCM). It is designed for generating power in vehicle with the merits of high power density, no brush, and wide airgap flux density modulation range. This paper mainly focuses on establishing the EMCM of the APCG and designing a set of optimal structure parameters. First, the topology and operation principle of the APCG are introduced in detail, including material, fabrication, and magnetic flux distribution. Second, the magnetic circuits in claw poles are simplified and the relationships among the key parameters are discussed. Finally, based on the simplified model and the relationships among the key parameters, the EMCMs of current and PM excitation are established, respectively. According to the EMCM, a scheme of a 4 kW APCG is carried out. This paper presents a quasi-three-dimensional (3-D) nonlinear magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model for double-sided axial flux permanent magnet machines (AFPMMs) with fractional slot concentrated windings. The proposed model can take into account not only the local magnetic saturation effect but also the 3-D flux distribution. A coupled variable permeance element is proposed in airgap modeling that captures both axial and circumferential airgap flux densities. With the help of the coupled variable permeance element, the transient magnetic field is considered by the time varying connection of the airgap and the rotor. The proposed model can be used to predict the performance of AFPMMs, including the 3-D distribution of no-load and armature airgap flux densities, no-load back electromotive force, and electromagnetic torque. In order to verify the reliability of the MEC model, two AFPMM prototypes are taken as examples, and the accuracy is verified by comparing the calculated parameters of the MEC model with the finite element analysis and experimental results. This paper presents a two-dimensional (2-D) analytical model for plannar linear permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous motors. The general and particular solutions are presented for a slotless single-sided linear PM synchronous motor as a case study. The governing partial differential equations of the motor are formulated for seven regions: mover side exterior, mover back iron, PMs, air-gap, winding, stator back-iron, and stator-side exterior. Four different magnetization patterns, i.e., parallel, ideal Halbach, 2-segment Halbach, and bar magnets in shifting directions magnetization patterns are considered to calculate the tangential and normal components of the open-circuit magnetic flux density and armature reaction of the motor under the study. The winding-induced voltage, flux linkage, self- and mutual inductances, and normal and tangential components of forces are computed. In recent years, permanent magnet vernier (PMV) machines are attracting more and more attentions owing to their high torque density feature, which is mainly benefited from its special operation principle called flux modulation effect. Nevertheless, It is found that its working flux density is low, viz., ∼0.3T for modulated flux density in the surface mounted PMV machines. Hence, there is a really large space to further improve the torque density of PMV machine. The spoke array magnet is widely used in the regular PM machine to improve working flux density. However, the flux barrier effect of spoke array magnet for the PMV machine has been proved, and a large torque reduction would be introduced in the high pole ratio spoke array PMV machine. In this paper, a novel spoke array PMV machine is proposed to improve working flux density and the torque density of PMV machines. The alternate magnetic bridges are added in the rotor core to connect iron pieces with same polarity and provide magnetic circuit for the low-pole number working magnetic field, hence the no-load back EMF and output torque of the proposed machine can be significantly improved. Moreover, analytical airgap flux density distribution based on equivalent magnetic circuit is presented to reveal the mechanism of working flux density improvement, and finite element analysis is used to investigate the performance features and structure parameter influence on the key performances, viz., back EMF and torque, of the proposed machine. This paper examines the required energy for the magnetization and demagnetization of magnets in a spoke type AlNiCo-based variable-flux machine and studies the torque characteristics of this machine at different magnetization levels. The low coercivity magnet in this machine can be magnetized or demagnetized using a short-time current pulse with negligible Ohmic loss. An advanced method is proposed to estimate the required energy for magnet demagnetization or magnetization to a specific level. A test procedure is developed to measure the energy that is injected to the variable-flux machine during the demagnetization and magnetization procedures. Since this machine has the ability to operate at various magnetization levels, it is of great importance to obtain the torque characteristics such as torque mean value, the peak to peak value of the torque, as well as the torque ripple, at different operating conditions. A static torque measurement test procedure using a variable speed drive system is developed to measure the torque waveform of the variable-flux machine at different magnetization levels. The verified finite element model of the variable-flux machine is used to analyze the harmonic content of the back-emf and the no-load air gap flux density at different levels of magnetization. Since single-sided linear induction motors working with a lateral asymmetric cap secondary is a frequent operating condition, this paper develops an equivalent circuit model considering the asymmetric condition. First, an analysis model, which takes the longitudinal end effect and skin effect into consideration, is proposed. Second, a transversal analysis model considering the laterally asymmetric cap secondary is developed to derive its correction factors. Then, the influence of lamination eddy current on the effective air gap to transversely directed flux is contrastively analyzed. Third, the traction characteristics of a prototype motor with symmetric and asymmetric cap secondary are calculated by the equivalent circuit. A new air-gap flux-based technique is proposed in this paper for turn-to-turn fault (TTF) detection and defective region identification, which is implemented in line-connected and inverter-fed induction motors. Some search coils (SCs) are used to measure the magnetic flux in various air-gap regions of the mentioned motor. The induced voltages in the SCs reveal the configuration of the rotational magnetic field (RMF) along the stator inner circumference to assess the symmetricity level of the flux distribution at each time instant. The RMF asymmetric distribution can be detected by comparing the induced voltages in various dual SCs (which under healthy conditions must sense identical magnetic flux) to detect TTFs and identify the faulty region as well. The proposed method is verified through finite element simulations and also by carrying out several experimental tests. Despite the fact that the proposed method is an invasive diagnostic technique, significant sensitivity and robustness in the face of unbalanced voltage sources and/or loading level are compelling evidence to use it for TTF detection at an incipient stage. The capability of the proposed technique to identify the faulty phase and the related region in the stator is another advantage of this invasive method, which cannot be ignored. Linear induction machines dynamics may not be as fast as that of their rotary counterparts due to a larger air gap, a bigger leakage flux, and end effect. Direct thrust control can speed up their dynamics substantially with rather high pulsations, while vector control facilitates a smoother performance but slower dynamics. In this paper, an analogy between the two control methods, when they are applied to the linear machines, is proved first. The analogy is then used to justify combining the selected parts of the two control methods to come up with a control method that provides faster dynamics than vector control and smother performance than direct thrust control. The proposed control method is realized by getting rid of demanding parts of the two conventional control methods. End effect is also considered in the modeling and control system design. Extensive simulation results confirmed by experimental results prove improved motor performances under the proposed control method. Due to the magnetic distortion and nonuniform force density of the single-side linear induction motor (SLIM) caused by the lateral movement, edge, and end effects, three types of torques, i.e., the side, normal, and horizontal torques, are produced. This paper investigates these special torques of the SLIM for metro and the variations of these torques when the primary is displaced sideways from a symmetrical position. It is of prime importance to take longitudinal end effects, edge effects, overhang of the primary windings, and lateral displacement into consideration when the air-gap flux density distributions and special torques are calculated via a 3-D analytical method. The air-gap flux density distributions along longitudinal and transverse directions, as well as the force density and torques with the different lateral displacements, are comprehensively investigated when the motor works in the motoring operation. The analytical results are experimentally validated by measurements on a reciprocal power-fed test rig. It shows that the horizontal and side torques, which increase the instability of the suspension system and the antirolling bar of bogie, increase almost linearly with the increase of the lateral displacement. The objective of this paper is to develop an analytical optimal design tool to determine a megawatt-scale yokelss and segmented armature (YASA) machine design that fulfills the application requirements and constraints. This analytical tool considers both electromagnetic and structural designs. Different designs that provide similar performance will have emerged from this analytical process. A design reference map that graphically shows the relationships and tradeoffs between each objective function is introduced. A multicriteria optimization process is applied to determine a design optimum. In the optimization process, the design objectives considered in this study are to minimize the outer diameter, to minimize the structural mass of the machine, to minimize the copper and iron losses, and to minimize the active materials cost. Three variables considered in calculating the objective functions are the air-gap flux density, the ratio of outer-to-inner machine diameter, and the current loading. The optimization method uses a pseudoweight vector to provide the flexibility to prioritize one or more objective functions, dependant on the specific application requirements. In this paper, a double stator (DS) wound field (WF) switched flux (SF) (DS-WFSF) machine is proposed. In the DS-WFSF machine, field and armature windings are separately placed in two different stators. Compared with the conventional WFSF machine with single stator, in which both field and armature windings are located, nonoverlapping concentrated windings and large slot areas can be obtained in the DS-WFSF machine. The proposed DS-WFSF machine exhibits >19% higher torque than the conventional WFSF machine, with both machines having the same space envelope and being globally optimized. The influence of leading design parameters, such as copper loss ratio between the field and armature windings, air-gap diameter, and rotor iron piece thickness and widths, on the average output torque is investigated for the DS-WFSF machines having 12/10, 12/11, 12/13, and 12/14 stator slots/rotor iron pieces. A 15-phase induction machine supplied by voltages with third-order harmonic injection has nonsinusoidal magnetomotive forces distribution. This paper introduces a distributed magnetic circuit approach to perform magnetic circuit calculations in order to determine the magnetizing inductance for both the fundamental and third-harmonic component. The proposed approach divides the half-pole or one-pole machine model into a large number of fan-shaped sectors. The air-gap flux densities for all sectors are then solved iteratively. The fundamental and third-harmonic inductances are extracted via Fourier analysis of air-gap flux density distribution. Calculated fundamental and third-order harmonic inductances are compared with those obtained from no-load tests of a 15-phase prototype induction machine. In high-speed solid-rotor induction machines, space harmonics in the air gap flux density corresponding to the stator slots typically cause significant losses on the rotor surface. Since these slot harmonics rotate very fast with respect to the rotor, their corresponding skin depths are typically very small. Loss estimates obtained by transient finite-element (FE) analysis may, therefore, require very fine spatial and temporal discretization and consequently very long solution time. In this paper, we derive a time-harmonic analytical model for the multilayer cylindrical rotor. Since the effect of the stator slots on the eddy-current losses cannot be ignored, the analytic solution is coupled to a numerical FE solution covering the stator. The resulting method is very fast since time stepping and meshing of the rotor can be avoided. The results are compared to those obtained with full 2-D transient FE analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
