This paper presents and experimentally validates a new control scheme for electrical drive systems, named cascaded predictive speed and current control. This new strategy uses the model predictive control (MPC) concept. It has a cascaded structure like that found in field-oriented control or direct torque control. Therefore the control strategy has two loops, external and internal, both implemented with model predictive control. The external loop controls the speed, while the inner loop controls the stator currents. The inner control loop is based on Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control, and the external loop uses MPC deadbeat, making full use of the inner loop's highly dynamic response. Experimental results show that the proposed strategy has a performance that is comparable to the classical control strategies but that it is overshoot-free and provides a better time response. Predictive control represents an optimization-oriented alternative for the control of power converters and drives. Predictive torque control of induction machines has been shown to achieve excellent initial results. The objective of this paper is to help develop this promising control approach by introducing new elements to improve its performance. The resulting algorithm improves the efficiency of the converter from \91.1\% to \92.6\% and achieves a common-mode voltage mitigation of \50\%, compared to the basic control method. A tradeoff is observed in the power quality. The algorithm gives the designer the ability to select the best operating point for each particular application and to optimize the converter’s performance. An improved two-stage model predictive current control (MPCC) for three-phase three-level converters in the paper, which can simultaneously achieve common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction, effective dc-link capacitor voltage control, and decreased computational burden, is proposed. Compared to the other current control strategies, it has the capability of handling multiple control objectives and possesses a simple structure. Furthermore, it greatly reduces the CMV since the peak CMVs of all the candidate voltage vectors are constrained to be less than one sixth of the dc-link voltage. In addition, an optimal two-stage voltage vector selection mechanism is employed in the proposed method. It helps to significantly reduce the computational complexity. For the short-term high torque output, an improved model predictive direct torque control (MPDTC) method with field enhancing is proposed to increase torque. In order to avoid the possible loss of synchronism while increasing torque, the MPDTC method limits the load angle in the cost function. Under the constant load angle limitation, the improved method increases the torque output capability by increasing the magnetic field. This paper starts from the torque calculation, theoretically analyzes the torque-load angle characteristics, and illustrates the flux vector trajectory with the voltage limit circle and current limit circle. The proposed method maintains the dynamic and static performance of the traditional MPDTC method while ensuring the system stability. The experimental results show that the torque capacity of the proposed method has been improved, and it has stable extreme output torque. So, some applications, such as electric load simulators, can choose the motor with small capacity and small inertia, thereby weakening negative effects of the inertia torque. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

–This paper proposes an efficient and optimal reduced control set model predictive flux control (RCS-MPFC) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped voltage source inverter (3L-NPC VSI) fed induction motor. The proposed algorithm reduces the computational time in the prediction stage without causing any suboptimality. The optimal voltage vector selected by the proposed method produces the same cost function value as that of the conventional FCS-MPFC which requires enumerating all 27 voltage vectors. Therefore, the proposed algorithm achieves the same performance as the conventional method in the entire range of operation of IM drives while the computational effort is significantly reduced. Conventionally, the converter of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is fed by the uncontrollable diode bridge rectifier (DBR), which leads to a low grid-side power factor (PF) and high current total harmonic distortion (THD). In this paper, an alternative solution for the grid-connected high-speed SRM drive system with improved PF is proposed. In the proposed drive system, the three-level active front end (AFE) is connected in cascade with the midpoint converter for SRM operation. A centralized strategy, which controls the AFE and SRM together, is proposed to govern the motor speed and grid-side PF by regulating the real power and reactive power of the system, respectively. Specifically, the real power, reactive power, and the voltage balancing of split capacitors are controlled by the model predictive directed power control (MP-DPC) algorithm, which significantly reduces the control complexity and guarantees the fast dynamic response. Consequently, satisfying speed regulation, high PF, low current THD, and bi-directional power-transfer capability are achieved. This article presents an optimal model predictive flux control (MPFC) for a two-level inverter fed induction motor. Integrating discrete SVM into FCS-MPFC enhances the performance of the IM drive. However, conventional DSVM-MPFC requires to enumerate and evaluate a higher number of virtual vectors in the prediction loop. In this paper, a high-efficient and low complexity voltage selection method is proposed to reduce the number of candidate voltage vectors from 38 to 15 without any suboptimality. Both steady-state and transient performances of the proposed method remain the same as the 38-vector based conventional DSVM-MPFC, producing the same cost-function values in all operating conditions. Furthermore, an online switching frequency reduction technique is proposed to achieve a minimum commutation per inverter vector change within each sampling cycle and between adjacent cycles. By appropriately arranging the sequence of real voltage vectors in each sampling cycle, a lower average switching frequency is achieved. The proposed switching frequency reduction method decreases the switching losses without compromising the performance of DSVM-MPFC as only the applied sequences of the real voltage vectors are optimized. This paper presents an efficient direct-model predictive control (EDMPC) technique for surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) in variable-speed wind energy conversion systems. The proposed control technique is based on directly computing the reference voltage vector (VV) from the demanded currents using a deadbeat (DB) function. Then, a discrete-time integral action (DTIA) is added to this DB function to enhance the robustness of the proposed EDMPC scheme against variations of the machine parameters and to achieve a good steady-state response. The proposed DTIA is simple and easy to implement. Finally, according to the location of this reference VV, two evaluations of the quality function are only required. Accordingly, the proposed EDMPC technique with DTIA overcomes the following drawbacks of the conventional direct-model predictive control (DMPC): high calculation burden, sensitivity to parameters mismatches, and non-zero steady-state error. The performance of the proposed EDMPC technique with DTIA has been experimentally investigated and compared with that of the EDMPC with time delay control approach and with the performance of the convention DMPC using a $\text{14.5}\,\text{kW}$ PMSG.
