Remotely sensed sea-surface temperature (SST) retrievals with a significant positive bias during the occurrence of upwelling phenomena along the southeastern coast of Brazil were reported in our companion paper. As a result, this paper proposes an automated bias correction algorithm to improve the MODIS long-wave multichannel SST (MCSST) retrievals during the abovementioned conditions in this region. In this paper, MODIS daytime SST data (SSTMODIS) and differences between brightness temperatures in MODIS channels 31 and 32 (BT31 − BT32) are analyzed simultaneously with hourly wind surface conditions, in situ SST at 0.3 and 10 m in depth (SSTbuoy03 and SSTbuoy10), and sensible and latent heat fluxes from the Cabo Frio buoy data (at 23° S, 42° W) during 2014. The obtained results show that some upwelling events present air temperature ($T_{\mathrm {air}}$) greater than SSTbuoy03 and low-atmospheric water vapor content. A simultaneous occurrence of these factors during upwelling conditions may lead to a warm-skin layer effect and may cause BT31 to be greater than SSTbuoy03 and BT31 − BT32 to be small (−0.18 °C ± 0.22 °C), affecting the MCSST performance. The proposed bias correction algorithm uses a least-squares curve between SSTbuoy03 and SSTMODIS retrievals when BT31 − BT32 ≤ 0.5 °C (i.e., dry atmospheric conditions). The bias correction algorithm has significantly improved the SSTMODIS bias (RMSE) from 1.43 °C to −0.2 °C (1.60 °C to 0.58 °C) when applied to 22 cloud-free pixels of MODIS during January–March of 2015. This paper introduces RapidScat 2.5-km ultrahigh-resolution (UHR) wind estimation and validates it in near-coastal regions. RapidScat UHR wind estimation provides finer resolution ocean wind vector fields than conventional 12.5-km level 2B (L2B) wind products at a cost of higher noise. In addition, this paper applies direction interval retrieval techniques and develops other wind processing improvements to enhance the performance of RapidScat UHR wind estimation. The new algorithm is validated with L2B wind estimates, numerical weather prediction wind products, and buoy measurements. The knowledge about the placement and appearance of lane markings is a prerequisite for the creation of maps with high precision, necessary for autonomous driving, infrastructure monitoring, lanewise traffic management, and urban planning. Lane markings are one of the important components of such maps. Lane markings convey the rules of roads to drivers. While these rules are learned by humans, an autonomous driving vehicle should be taught to learn them to localize itself. Therefore, accurate and reliable lane-marking semantic segmentation in the imagery of roads and highways is needed to achieve such goals. We use airborne imagery that can capture a large area in a short period of time by introducing an aerial lane marking data set. In this paper, we propose a symmetric fully convolutional neural network enhanced by wavelet transform in order to automatically carry out lane-marking segmentation in aerial imagery. Due to a heavily unbalanced problem in terms of a number of lane-marking pixels compared with background pixels, we use a customized loss function as well as a new type of data augmentation step. We achieve a high accuracy in pixelwise localization of lane markings compared with the state-of-the-art methods without using the third-party information. In this paper, we introduce the first high-quality data set used within our experiments, which contains a broad range of situations and classes of lane markings representative of today’s transportation systems. Land surface temperature and emissivity (LST&E) are key variables for a wide variety of surface–atmosphere studies, and it is very important to validate the accuracy of different LST&E retrieval algorithms. In this paper, the accuracy of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection (ASTER) temperature emissivity separation (TES) algorithm with the water vapor scaling (WVS) method and the ASTER standard LSE&E products (without WVS) was validated using 12 ASTER scenes from May 2012 to September 2012 with concurrent ground LST and emissivity measurements collected in an arid area in northwest China during the Heihe Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research experiment. Both the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and MOD07 atmospheric profile products were employed to perform the atmospheric correction. The results showed that the WVSTES LSTs retrieved from the two profiles both demonstrate good accuracies, with average biases of 0.34 and 0.24 K and average root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) of 1.52 and 1.46 K for the NCEP and MOD07 profiles, respectively. When the WVS was not applied, we obtained an average bias of 1.26 K and an average RMSE of 2.05 K for the AST08 product. The emissivities from the WVSTES algorithm with the two profiles both showed good agreements with the ground CE312 measurements, with mean differences of the five ASTER bands that were less than 0.01. AST05 showed anomalous emissivity spectra and underestimated the emissivity values of graybody surfaces when compared with the ground data, with mean differences of greater than 0.015, which were more obvious for cases with high water vapor. This paper demonstrated that the WVS method is critical for retrieving ASTER TES LST with accuracies within 1.5 K and emissivity within 0.015 for a wide range of atmospheric conditions and land surface types. The study on the scattering mechanism of breaking ship waves provides important theoretical basis to the ship detection and radar imaging in a marine environment. This paper presents a new procedure for evaluating the electromagnetic scattering field of breaking ship waves over a perfect electric conductor sea surface. In this paper, different forms of the near-field ship waves are obtained by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, which provides a new means of analyzing a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction system in a detailed manner. Sufficient grids are used in the CFD numerical simulation to obtain the flow field information of the breaking waves. The accuracy of the breaking wave geometry has been improved obviously, which will lead to a better understanding of the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of breaking ship waves. Considering the multiple scattering between the ship hull and the breaking waves, the scattering field of the sea surface and the ship hull are evaluated by the forward–backward iterated physical optics algorithm. Both scattering characteristics of the breaking ship waves and distribution of the scattering coefficients are obtained. By comparing the bistatic scattering field in different situations, the numerical results show some important effects of the breaking ship waves, which are quite different from the effects of ship models. This paper discusses an image processing architecture and tools to address the problem of ship detection in synthetic-aperture radar images. The detection strategy relies on a tree-based representation of images, here a Maxtree, and graph signal processing tools. Radiometric as well as geometric attributes are evaluated and associated with the Maxtree nodes. They form graph attribute signals which are processed with graph filters. The goal of this filtering step is to exploit the correlation existing between attribute values on neighboring tree nodes. Considering that trees are specific graphs where the connectivity toward ancestors and descendants may have a different meaning, we analyze several linear, nonlinear, and morphological filtering strategies. Beside graph filters, two new filtering notions emerge from this analysis: tree and branch filters. Finally, we discuss a ship detection architecture that involves graph signal filters and machine learning tools. This architecture demonstrates the interest of applying graph signal processing tools on the tree-based representation of images and of going beyond classical graph filters. The resulting approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms. Aiming at removing stationary and moving clutter while retaining precipitation for dual-polarization weather radar, a new clutter suppression method, named the object-orientated spectral polarimetric (OBSpol) filter, is put forward in this paper. Based on the spectral polarimetric feature and the range-Doppler continuity of precipitation, the OBSpol filter generates a filtering mask implemented on the raw range-Doppler spectrogram to mitigate the clutter and noise. The procedures are as follows. After the spectral polarimetric filtering and the mathematical morphology method, one binary mask where “1” indicates the precipitation is obtained. Then, the contiguous bins of the same value “1” in the range-Doppler domain are grouped in areas termed as objects. Whether the produced objects are precipitation or not will be further judged based on appropriate weather radar observable. Thus, combining all the filtered separate objects, a filtering mask can be obtained. In this paper, data collected by the polarimetric Doppler IRCTR drizzle radar are used to demonstrate and assess the performance of the proposed technique in the case of ground clutter, narrowband moving clutter, and noise. Two precipitation cases are examined: 1) moderate precipitation with large scale and 2) light precipitation with severe clutter contamination. In the range-Doppler spectrogram, both stationary and narrowband moving clutters are mitigated, while maintaining nonoverlapping precipitation signal. This helps to solve the problem when clutter and precipitation overlap in the time domain. In addition, the OBSpol filter is proven to be effective with different Doppler velocity resolutions. This technique can be applied in real-time due to its low computation complexity. Moreover, the spectral polarimetric filtering can be designed using the measurements of dual-polarization radar systems which do not have cross-polar measurements. This paper investigates the use of an acoustic glider to perform acoustical meteorology. This discipline consists of analyzing ocean ambient noise to infer above-surface meteorological conditions. The paper focuses on wind speed estimation, in a near-shore marine environment. In such a shallow water context, the ambient noise field is complex, with site-dependent factors and a variety of nonweather concurrent acoustic sources. A conversion relationship between sound pressure level and wind speed is proposed, taking the form of an outlier-robust nonlinear regression model learned with in situ data. This method is successfully applied to experimental data collected in Massachusetts Bay (MA, USA) during four glider surveys. An average error in wind speed estimation of 1.3 m · s−1 (i.e., average relative error of 14%) over wind speed values up to 17 m · s−1 is reported with this method, which outperformed results obtained with relationships from the literature. Quantitative results are also detailed on the dependence of wind speed error estimation on the environment characteristics, and on the classification performance of observations contaminated by acoustic sources other than wind. Passive acoustic-based weather systems are a promising solution to provide long-term in situ weather data with fine time and spatial resolutions. These data are crucial for satellite calibration and assimilation in meteorological models. From a broader perspective, this paper is the first step toward an operationalization of acoustic weather systems and their on-board embedding in underwater monitoring platforms such as gliders. In most of the existing ground penetrating radar (GPR) imaging algorithms, using either full or sparse data collection, the ground is modeled as a single half-space layer. In this paper, a generalized sparse imaging approach with total variation minimization (TVM) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) GPR imaging through multilayered subsurface is proposed. The multilayered media Green’s function is incorporated in the imaging algorithm to take into account the complex wave propagation effects under multilayered subsurface. An analytical expression of the layered subsurface Green’s function is derived using the stationary-phase method, which significantly reduces the computation time and complexity. On the other hand, as TVM minimizes the gradient of the image, its incorporation in the imaging algorithm results in a reconstruction that preserves the geometry and edges of the targets better than the standard L1-minimization-based sparsity-driven imaging. The number of antenna elements and frequency measurements in MIMO GPR system can be significantly reduced using the proposed technique without degradation of the image quality. So far, the problem of unmixing large or multitemporal hyperspectral data sets has been specifically addressed in the remote sensing literature only by a few dedicated strategies. Among them, some attempts have been made within a distributed estimation framework, in particular, relying on the alternating direction method of multipliers. In this paper, we propose to study the interest of a partially asynchronous distributed unmixing procedure based on a recently proposed asynchronous algorithm. Under standard assumptions, the proposed algorithm inherits its convergence properties from recent contributions in nonconvex optimization, while allowing the problem of interest to be efficiently addressed. Comparisons with a distributed synchronous counterpart of the proposed unmixing procedure allow its interest to be assessed on synthetic and real data. This paper examines the attainable performance of various Doppler sublook or subband cross correlation techniques for vessel detection in synthetic aperture radar images. Research from the past two decades claims that these techniques were capable of improving the detection of small ships in challenging maritime environments. Despite many published experimental examples, a thorough analytical investigation corroborating this claim is noticeably absent. This paper is based on a rigorous theoretical analysis founded on the statistical properties of a textured sea surface model in thermal noise with simultaneous consideration of a constant false alarm rate. Emphasis has been placed on the correct accounting for detrimental physical effects caused by the Doppler spectrum being split into nonoverlapping parts, which have not been sufficiently considered in the literature to date. The theoretical results are confirmed via simulations and are substantiated with real RADARSAT-2 data. The analysis in this paper has neither found theoretical nor empirical evidence that sublook correlation techniques outperform the classical detector based on the image magnitude. Underground hydrocarbon reservoir rocks comprise numerous multiscale irregular pores that significantly affect the mechanical and fluid transport properties of the rock. It is considerably challenging for in situ geological monitoring and laboratory tests to accurately characterize the changes in the interior structure and the corresponding mechanical properties of the rock mass during dynamic excavation processes. The 3-D numerical reconstruction models that are based on the statistical information extracted from X-ray computed tomography (XCT) images provide a feasible method to obtain and characterize the interior pore structures and their effects on the physical responses of reservoir rocks. However, obtaining sufficient high-resolution 2-D XCT images is economically expensive by the traditional fan beam CT scan system. Reconstructing 3-D porous structures by computational methods using statistical information extracted from XCT images usually has low efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a novel method to numerically reconstruct natural sandstone rock using a small number of 2-D XCT images. The Bayesian information criterion was used to determine the minimum number of 2-D XCT images required to ensure the expected reconstruction accuracy. A multithread parallel reconstruction scheme was employed to improve the efficiency. The accuracy of the proposed method was verified by comparing the statistical correlation functions, geometrical and topological characteristics, and mechanical properties of pore structures between the reconstructed model and a sandstone prototype. This paper introduces recurrent neural networks (RNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and gated recurrent unit (GRU) to detect and classify continuous sequences of volcano-seismic events at the Deception Island Volcano, Antarctica. A representative data set containing volcano-tectonic earthquakes, long-period events, volcanic tremors, and hybrid events was used to train these models. Experimental results show that RNN, LSTM, and GRU can exploit temporal and frequency information from continuous seismic data, attaining close to 90%, 94%, and 92% events correctly detected and classified. A second experiment is presented in this paper. The architectures described above, trained with data from campaigns of seismic records obtained in 1995–2002, have been tested with data from the recent seismic survey performed at the Deception Island Volcano in 2016–2017 by the Spanish Antarctic scientific campaign. Despite the variations in the geophysical properties of the seismic events within the volcano across eruptive periods, results provide good generalization accuracy. This paper is devoted to solving a full-wave inverse scattering problem (ISP), which is aimed at retrieving permittivities of dielectric scatterers from the knowledge of measured scattering data. ISPs are highly nonlinear due to multiple scattering, and iterative algorithms with regularizations are often used to solve such problems. However, they are associated with heavy computational cost, and consequently, they are often time-consuming. This paper proposes the convolutional neural network (CNN) technique to solve full-wave ISPs. We introduce and compare three training schemes based on U-Net CNN, including direct inversion, backpropagation, and dominant current schemes (DCS). Several representative tests are carried out, including both synthetic and experimental data, to evaluate the performances of the proposed methods. It is demonstrated that the proposed DCS outperforms the other two schemes in terms of accuracy and is able to solve typical ISPs quickly within 1 s. Linear spectral unmixing is the practice of decomposing the mixed pixel into a linear combination of the constituent endmembers and the estimated abundances. This paper focuses on unsupervised spectral unmixing where the endmembers are unknown a priori. Conventional approaches use either geometrical- or statistical-based approaches. In this paper, we address the challenges of spectral unmixing with unsupervised deep learning models, in specific, the autoencoder models, where the decoder serves as the endmembers and the hidden layer output serves as the abundances. In several recent attempts, part-based autoencoders have been designed to solve the unsupervised spectral unmixing problem. However, the performance has not been satisfactory. In this paper, we first discuss some important findings we make on issues with part-based autoencoders. By proof of counterexample, we show that all existing part-based autoencoder networks with nonnegative and tied encoder and decoder are inherently defective by making these inappropriate assumptions on the network structure. As a result, they are not suitable for solving the spectral unmixing problem. We propose a so-called untied denoising autoencoder with sparsity, in which the encoder and decoder of the network are independent, and only the decoder of the network is enforced to be nonnegative. Furthermore, we make two critical additions to the network design. First, since denoising is an essential step for spectral unmixing, we propose to incorporate the denoising capacity into the network optimization in the format of a denoising constraint rather than cascading another denoising preprocessor in order to avoid the introduction of additional reconstruction error. Second, to be more robust to the inaccurate estimation of a number of endmembers, we adopt an $l_{21}$ -norm on the encoder of the network to reduce the redundant endmembers while decreasing the reconstruction error simultaneously. To advance the utility of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar observations for extracting biophysical information about vegetation canopies, it is important to develop good understanding of the scattering mechanisms that give rise to the polarimetric scattering response and to apply it toward the development of effective decomposition models of the polarimetric covariance matrices. In this paper, we introduce a more rigorous approach to characterizing the volume scattering component of the three-component scattering model developed by Freeman and Durden. The improved rigor has two aspects: 1) the use of a T-matrix model for computing the polarimetric scattering by an inclined dielectric cylinder and 2) the incorporation of the change in local incidence angle as a function of the orientation of the vegetation cylinders. The improvements address some of the current limitations of the Freeman–Durden model. This paper also provides a sensitivity analysis of the various components of the covariance matrix as a function of several physical parameters including cylinder size, its dielectric constant, and the orientation distribution of cylinders. This paper evaluates the capability of Sentinel-1 VH-polarized synthetic aperture radar signals, involving 738 scenes in the interferometric wide swath (IW) mode, for ocean surface wind speed retrieval using a novel subswath-based C-band cross-polarized ocean model. When compared with in situ measurements, it is observed that wind speed retrieval accuracy varies progressively along swath, with the most accurate wind speed retrievals being derived from subswath 3 [root-mean-square error (RMSE) of $1.82\,\,\text {m}\cdot \mathrm {s}^{-1}$ ], followed by subswath 2 (RMSE of $1.92\,\,\text {m}\cdot \mathrm {s}^{-1}$), while subswath 1 showed the lowest retrieval accuracy (RMSE of $2.37\,\,\text {m}\,\cdot \,\mathrm {s}^{-1}$). The average RMSE of wind speeds retrieved from all the three subswaths is $2.08\,\,\text {m}\,\cdot \,\mathrm {s}^{-1}$ under low-to-high wind speed regimes (wind speeds $< 25\,\,\text {m}\,\cdot \,\mathrm {s}^{-1}$). We further observed that the dependence of VH-polarized normalized radar cross section (NRCS) on incidence angle is attributable to the high and changing noise equivalent sigma zero (NESZ) with incidence angle under low-to-moderate wind speed regimes. And that strong VH-polarized radar signals could overcome the NESZ effect, thereby eliminating the dependence of VH-polarized NRCS on incidence angle under strong wind conditions. For Sentinel-1 IW mode VH-polarized data, the effect of NESZ could be ignored when wind speeds are greater than $15\,\,\text {m}\cdot \mathrm {s}^{-1}$ , as a better wind speed retrieval performance of these data has been recorded in this paper at wind speeds greater than $10\,\,\text {m}\cdot \mathrm {s}^{-1}$ , owing to an RMSE below $1.6\,\,\text {m}\cdot \mathrm {s}^{-1}$ and biases ranging from −0.5 to $0.5\,\,\text {m}\cdot \mathrm {s}^{-1}$. In this paper, we focus on ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for infrastructural health monitoring, especially for the monitoring of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge slab. Due to the demand of noncontact and high-speed monitoring technique which can handle vast amounts of aging infrastructures, GPR is a promising tool. However, because radar images consist of many reflected waves, they are usually difficult to interpret. Furthermore, the spatial resolution of system is not enough considering the thickness of target damages, cracks, and segregation are millimeter-to-centimeter order while the wavelength of ordinary GPR ultrahigh-frequency band is over 10 cm. To address these problems, for the purpose of sensitive damage detection, we propose a new algorithm based on deconvolution utilizing a super high-frequency (SHF) band system. First, a distribution of reflection coefficient is inversely estimated by 1-D bridge slab model. Because concrete is found to be a lossy medium at SHF band, we consider the attenuation of signal in deconvolution. The algorithm is called “time-variant deconvolution” in this paper. After the validation by simulation, the effects of the algorithm and frequency band on damage detection accuracy are evaluated by a field experiment. Though the results show a 1-mm horizontal crack is not detected by measured waves, when it is filled with water, it is detected by time-variant deconvolution. Moreover, the 1-mm dried crack is detected only by time-variant deconvolution at SHF band, which greatly emphasizes the peaks of the reflection coefficient of the crack. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate and high throughput extraction of crop phenotypic traits, as a crucial step of molecular breeding, is of great importance for yield increasing. However, automatic stem–leaf segmentation as a prerequisite of many precise phenotypic trait extractions is still a big challenge. Current works focus on the study of the 2-D image-based segmentation, which are sensitive to illumination and occlusion. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) can obtain accurate 3-D information with its active laser scanning and strong penetration ability, which breaks through phenotyping from 2-D to 3-D. However, few researches have addressed the problem of the LiDAR-based stem–leaf segmentation. In this paper, we proposed a median normalized-vector growth (MNVG) algorithm, which can segment stem and leaf with four steps, i.e., preprocessing, stem growth, leaf growth, and postprocessing. The MNVG method was tested by 30 maize samples with different heights, compactness, leaf numbers, and densities from three growing stages. Moreover, phenotypic traits at leaf, stem, and individual levels were extracted with the truly segmented instances. The mean accuracy of segmentation at point level in terms of the recall, precision, F-score, and overall accuracy were 0.92, 0.93, 0.92, and 0.93, respectively. The accuracy of phenotypic trait extraction in leaf, stem, and individual levels ranged from 0.81 to 0.95, 0.64 to 0.97, and 0.96 to 1, respectively. To our knowledge, this paper proposed the first LiDAR-based stem–leaf segmentation and phenotypic trait extraction method in agriculture field, which may contribute to the study of LiDAR-based plant phonemics and precise agriculture. This paper addresses the highly challenging problem of automatically detecting man-made structures especially buildings in very high-resolution (VHR) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. In this context, this paper has two major contributions. First, it presents a novel and generic workflow that initially classifies the spaceborne SAR tomography (TomoSAR) point clouds—generated by processing VHR SAR image stacks using advanced interferometric techniques known as TomoSAR—into buildings and nonbuildings with the aid of auxiliary information (i.e., either using openly available 2-D building footprints or adopting an optical image classification scheme) and later back project the extracted building points onto the SAR imaging coordinates to produce automatic large-scale benchmark labeled (buildings/nonbuildings) SAR data sets. Second, these labeled data sets (i.e., building masks) have been utilized to construct and train the state-of-the-art deep fully convolution neural networks with an additional conditional random field represented as a recurrent neural network to detect building regions in a single VHR SAR image. Such a cascaded formation has been successfully employed in computer vision and remote sensing fields for optical image classification but, to our knowledge, has not been applied to SAR images. The results of the building detection are illustrated and validated over a TerraSAR-X VHR spotlight SAR image covering approximately 39 km 2—almost the whole city of Berlin— with the mean pixel accuracies of around 93.84%. The ozone mapping and profiler suite (OMPS) is carried onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite that was launched on October 28, 2011. The OMPS mission objectives concern atmospheric ozone concentrations and their variations in the earth atmosphere. A successful thorough on-orbit sensor calibration enabled current validated operational sensor data record (SDR) stage, providing quality sensor data that meet the requirements and users’ expectations. The calibration coefficients derived from this paper have been successfully used in a life-cycle SDR reprocessing to improve sensor data quality. In this paper, we present our qualitative analyses and the results of OMPS nadir mapper SDR on-orbit calibration, and address current SDR data quality in relation to instrument detector performance, stray light correction, and wavelength registration. Scene classification of remote sensing images has drawn great attention because of its wide applications. In this paper, with the guidance of the human visual system (HVS), we explore the attention mechanism and propose a novel end-to-end attention recurrent convolutional network (ARCNet) for scene classification. It can learn to focus selectively on some key regions or locations and just process them at high-level features, thereby discarding the noncritical information and promoting the classification performance. The contributions of this paper are threefold. First, we design a novel recurrent attention structure to squeeze high-level semantic and spatial features into several simplex vectors for the reduction of learning parameters. Second, an end-to-end network named ARCNet is proposed to adaptively select a series of attention regions and then to generate powerful predictions by learning to process them sequentially. Third, we construct a new data set named OPTIMAL-31, which contains more categories than popular data sets and gives researchers an extra platform to validate their algorithms. This paper leads a discussion on how to form a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image without knowing the relative track. That is, within the scope of factorized geometrical autofocus (FGA). The FGA algorithm is a base-2 fast factorized back-projection (FFBP) formulation with six free geometry parameters (per subaperture pair). These are tuned step by step until a sharp image is obtained. This innovative autofocus concept can compensate completely for an erroneous geometry. The FGA algorithm has been applied successfully on two ultrawideband (UWB) data sets, acquired by the CARABAS II system at very high frequency (VHF)-band. The relative tracks are known (measured accurately). We, however, adopt and modify a basic geometry model. A linear equidistant track at fixed altitude is initially assumed. Apart from deviations due to linearization, a ~2.5-m/s along-track velocity error is also introduced. Resulting FGA images are compared to reference images and verified to be focused. This indicates that it is feasible to form a wavelength-resolution SAR image at VHF-band without support from a motion measurement system. The execution time for the examples in this paper is about five times longer with autofocus than without. Hence, the FGA algorithm is now fit for use on a regular basis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polarization orientation angle (POA) is an important parameter of polarimetric radar scattering from slopes in mountainous region. It is known that surface tilted in azimuth direction and buildings not aligned in the along-track direction induce polarization orientation shifts. Earlier research has established orientation angle as a function of radar imaging geometry and surface slopes, and that POA estimation can be derived from polarimetric radar data using circular polarization. Besides these, polarimetric scattering from steep slopes and its relation to POA remain not well understood. In this paper, we address these issues by adopting a tilted surface model based on Bragg scattering. We have found that, as the azimuthal slope increases, $\vert $ VV $\vert $ decreases at a faster rate than $\vert $ HH $\vert $ , they become equal, when POA is ±45°, and $\vert $ HH $\vert >\vert $ VV $\vert $ afterward. In other words, the Pauli component, $\vert $ HH-VV $\vert $ reduced to zero at POA = ± 45°, and the typical Bragg scattering characteristics of $\vert $ VV $\vert >\vert $ HH $\vert $ does not apply when steep slope is present inducing $\vert $ POA $\vert > 45^{\circ }$. Furthermore, the cross-pol $\vert $ HV $\vert $ does not always increase with azimuth slope but also reaches a maximum then decreases to zero. In addition, we investigate the effect of soil moisture on polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) scattering characteristics of steep terrain and the effect of vegetation over surface on POA estimation. The latter is demonstrated with NASA/JPL TOPSAR L-band PolSAR data and C-band InSAR data. Another significance of this paper is that it provides a direct and rigorous derivation of POA equations. Snow albedo plays an important role in the global climate system. There are notable missing data and error uncertainties in the current remote sensing snow albedo products that are attributed to the limits of remote-sensing technology. Due to the uncertainties of meteorological factors and the differences in various forward model simulation methods, snow albedo forward simulations also have considerable uncertainties. This paper suggests a long-time-series reconstruction of snow albedo utilizing a forward radiation-transferring model and a remote-sensing retrieval model together with multisource remotely sensed data and meteorological data. The key to this paper is to estimate snow information for areas lacking data utilizing a forward model for snow albedo with clear physical mechanisms. The estimated snow information can be used as reliable data for snow albedo reconstructions. The results indicate that the long time series of snow albedo data obtained by coupling the snow albedo retrieval model and forward simulation model is highly accurate. The mean absolute error, root mean square error, Pearson’s correlation coefficient (R), and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient of the observed and reconstructed snow albedos are 0.11, 0.14, 0.79, and 0.69, respectively. The reconstructed snow albedo data are underestimated by only 11% relative to the in situ snow surface albedo measurements. In the alpine mountain regions, the proposed method has a simulation accuracy that is 6% greater than that of the MOD10A1 SAD. This paper presents a novel approach to automatically detect and count cars in different aerial images, which can be satellite or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images. Variations in satellite and/or UAV data make it particularly challenging to have a robust method that works properly on a variety of images. A solution based on the bag-of-words (BoW) model is explored in this paper due to its invariance characteristic and highly stable performance in object/scene categorization. Different from categorization tasks, vehicle detection needs to localize the positions of cars in images. To make BoW suitable for this purpose, we extensively improve the methodology in three aspects, namely, by introducing a recently proposed feature representation, i.e., the local steering kernel descriptor, adding spatial structure constraints, and developing an orientation aware scanning mechanism to produce detection with “one-window-one-car” results. Experiments are conducted on various aerial images with large variations, which consist of data from two public databases, e.g., the Overhead Imagery Research Data Set and Vehicle Detection in Aerial Imagery, as well as other satellite and UAV images. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. Compared with existing techniques, the proposed method is applicable to a wider range of aerial images. A generalized continuous wave synthetic aperture radar (GCW-SAR) concept is proposed in this paper. By using full-duplex radio frontend and continuous wave signaling, the GCW-SAR system can overcome a number of limitations inherent within the existing SAR systems and achieve high-resolution and wide-swath remote sensing with low-power signal transmission. Unlike the conventional pulsed SAR and the frequency-modulated continuous-wave SAR, the GCW-SAR reconstructs a radar image by directly correlating the received 1-D raw data after self-interference cancellation with predetermined location-dependent reference signals. A fast imaging algorithm, called the piecewise constant Doppler (PCD) algorithm, is also proposed, which produces the radar image recursively in the azimuth direction without any intermediate step, such as range compression and migration compensation, as required by conventional algorithms. By removing the stop-and-go assumption or slow-time sampling in azimuth, the PCD algorithm not only achieves better imaging quality but also allows for more flexible waveform and system designs. Analyses and simulations show that the GCW-SAR tolerates significant self-interference and works well with a large selection of various system parameters. In this paper, a new joint spectral–spatial subpixel mapping model is proposed for hyperspectral remotely sensed imagery. Conventional approaches generally use an intermediate step based on the derivation of fractional abundance maps obtained after a spectral unmixing process, and thus the rich spectral information contained in the original hyperspectral data set may not be utilized fully. In this paper, a concept of subpixel abundance map, which calculates the abundance fraction of each subpixel to belong to a given class, was introduced. This allows us to directly connect the original (coarser) hyperspectral image with the final subpixel result. Furthermore, the proposed approach incorporates the spectral information contained in the original hyperspectral imagery and the concept of spatial dependence to generate a final subpixel mapping result. The proposed approach has been experimentally evaluated using both synthetic and real hyperspectral images, and the obtained results demonstrate that the method achieves better results when compared to other seven subpixel mapping methods. The numerical comparisons are based on different indexes such as the overall accuracy and the CPU time. Moreover, the obtained results are statistically significant at 95% confidence. This paper focuses on the detection, from a stack of repeated-pass interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, of such changes causing a target to completely lose the correlation between one epoch and another. This can be the consequence of human activities, such as construction, destruction, and agricultural activities, and also be the consequence of hazards, such as earthquake, landslides, or flooding, to buildings or terrains. The millimetric sensitivity of SAR makes it valuable for detecting such changes. This paper approaches two coherent change detection methods: a space coherent, time incoherent one and a full space and time coherent one, both based on the generalized likelihood ratiob (LR) test. A preliminary validation of the method is provided by processing two Sentinel-1 data stacks of 2016 Central Italy earthquake and by comparing the results with the map of damaged buildings in Amatrice and Accumoli made by Copernicus Emergency Management Service. This paper deals with the compensation of phase miscalibration in the general context of tomographic synthetic aperture radar image focusing. Phase errors are typically independent of one acquisition to the other, thus leading to a spreading and defocusing in the multidimensional (3-D, 4-D, and 5-D) imaging space. Coping with this problem in presence of volumetric scattering is generally a complex issue. In this paper, we consider the approach for phase calibration characterized by the advantage, with respect to classical phase calibration algorithms, of not requiring either the identification of a reference target or specific assumptions about the unknown phase function, or a priori information about the terrain topography. The novelty of the proposed phase miscalibration estimation and compensation method is related to its ability to avoid unwanted and uncontrollable vertical shifts in the focused image. The estimation of the calibration phase is performed by optimizing the contrast or the entropy of the vertical profile with the constraint of a zero phase derivative. Such a constraint preserves the output height distribution. Experimental results of simulated and real data are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Estimation of daily downward shortwave radiation (DSR) is of great importance in global energy budget and climatic modeling. The combination of satellite-based instantaneous measurements and temporal extrapolation models is the most feasible way to capture daily radiation variations at large scales. However, previous studies did not pay enough attention to topographic effects and simple temporal extrapolation methods were applied directly to rugged terrains which cover a large amount of the land surface. This paper, divided into two parts, aims at analyzing the topographic uncertainties of existing models and proposing a better method based on a mountain radiative transfer (MRT) model to calculate daily DSR. As the first part, this paper analyze the spatiotemporal variations of DSR influenced by topographic effects and checks the applicability of three temporal extrapolation methods on cloud-free days. Considering that clouds also have a strong influence on solar radiation, cloud-free days are chosen for targeted analysis of topographic effects on DSR. Three indices, the coefficient of variation, entropy-based dispersion coefficient (CH), and sill of semivariogram, are put forward to give a quantitative description of spatial heterogeneity. Our results show that the topography can dramatically strengthen the spatial heterogeneity of DSR. The index, CH, has an advantage for quantifying spatial heterogeneity as it offers a tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency. Spatial heterogeneity distorts the daily variation of DSR. Application of extrapolation methods in rugged terrains leads to overestimation of daily average DSR up to 60 W/m2 and a maximum 200 W/m2 error of instantaneous DSR on cloud-free days. The accurate estimation of within-footprint slope is very important for measuring earth’s surface characteristics using satellite light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. Several models have previously been proposed for slope estimation; however, these models have limitations in either accuracy or applicability. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of various factors (e.g., ground vertical extent, footprint size, footprint shape, and footprint orientation) on slope estimation to better estimate the within-footprint slope using large-footprint waveform LiDAR data. The results indicated that the absolute slope error due to the coupling effect of ground vertical extent and footprint size increased with an increase in the ratio of ground vertical extent and footprint size, while the relative slope error had an opposite trend. The slope error caused by footprint shape was relatively low when the footprint eccentricity was small. However, the slope error due to footprint shape grew rapidly when the footprint eccentricity became larger; thus, it is essential to fully take into account the influence of footprint shape on within-footprint slope estimation. In addition, the results suggest that the slope error changed regularly based on the intersection angle between footprint orientation and terrain aspect. This paper also provided guidance for the determination of an easy and practical model for within-footprint slope estimation. The determination of best model is dependent on the value of intersection angle. Once the intersection value is given, the best model can easily be determined. One-minute rain rate exceeded for 0.01% of an average year (known as R0.01) is an important parameter, which is required in rain fade models for planning both satellite and terrestrial links, especially in the microwave and millimeter-wave bands. This paper presents the development of a new global model for estimating high-resolution R0.01. The model is developed using the Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS), ERA-Interim reanalyzed total precipitable water, and the cumulative distribution functions of the measured R0.01 via genetic algorithm. The newly proposed model performs better than the International Telecommunication Union Radio Sector (ITU-R) recommendation and widely used ITU-R P.837-6 model, particularly over the tropical regions, where ITU-R P.837-6 strongly underestimates R0.01. Overall, when compared to ITU-R P.837-6, the estimated R0.01 by the proposed model is improved by ~15%. Furthermore, the proposed model can provide R0.01 with a much higher spatial resolution (~5 km) as compared to ITU-R P.837-6 (~110 km). Another key advantage of the proposed model over ITU-R P.837-6 is that the inputs required for this model are readily available from meteorological database as well as from space-based observing system. This paper also investigated the long-term (1981–2016) trends in R0.01. The analysis revealed significant increasing trends in R0.01 over most parts of the globe, India and northern part of Southern America exhibited the strongest ($\sim 0.5\,\,\text {mm}\cdot \text {h}^{-1}\cdot $ year−1) increasing trends. It is anticipated that R0.01 obtained with the newly proposed model will have large implications in rain attenuation modeling for planning both terrestrial and earth–satellite microwave links. Due to the urgent demand for remote sensing big data analysis, large-scale remote sensing image retrieval (LSRSIR) attracts increasing attention from researchers. Generally, LSRSIR can be divided into two categories as follows: uni-source LSRSIR (US-LSRSIR) and cross-source LSRSIR (CS-LSRSIR). More specifically, US-LSRSIR means the inquiry remote sensing image and images in the searching data set come from the same remote sensing data source, whereas CS-LSRSIR is designed to retrieve remote sensing images with a similar content to the inquiry remote sensing image that are from a different remote sensing data source. In the literature, US-LSRSIR has been widely exploited, but CS-LSRSIR is rarely discussed. In practical situations, remote sensing images from different kinds of remote sensing data sources are continually increasing, so there is a great motivation to exploit CS-LSRSIR. Therefore, this paper focuses on CS-LSRSIR. To cope with CS-LSRSIR, this paper proposes source-invariant deep hashing convolutional neural networks (SIDHCNNs), which can be optimized in an end-to-end manner using a series of well-designed optimization constraints. To quantitatively evaluate the proposed SIDHCNNs, we construct a dual-source remote sensing image data set that contains eight typical land-cover categories and 10 000 dual samples in each category. This paper assesses the performance of water vapor measurements by Sondeur Atmosphérique du Profild’ Humidité Intertropicale par Radiométrie (SAPHIR), microwave limb sounder (MLS), and the global reanalysis water vapor data [Modern Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) and European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis (ERA) interim] by comparing with water vapor-measured in situ by cryogenic frost-point hygrometer (CFH) at two tropical stations, Trivandrum (8.5°N, 76.9°E) and Hyderabad (17.47°N, 78.58°E). The iMet-1 radiosonde though overestimates frost-point temperature (3%–5%) in the 4–10-km altitude region with respect to CFH, it agrees well with CFH observations in the upper troposphere and the lower troposphere with a mean difference <2% and ~1%, respectively. SAPHIR–CFH intercomparison is done for the troposphere region, and MLS, MERRA, and ERA interim are compared with CFH in the lower stratosphere region. SAPHIR and CFH comparison shows a reasonable agreement between both the datasets with a relative humidity difference of about 15% in the lower and middle troposphere and a dry bias of ~40% in the upper troposphere. Intercomparison between CFH and MLS water vapor mixing ratios (WVMRs) shows a small wet bias (−10% to −20%) for the MLS in the lower stratospheric region between 100 and 50 hPa and a small dry bias (<10%) above that region. This paper shows that the MLS always underestimates when the CFH WVMR is greater than 6 ppmv and overestimates when the WVMR is less than 2 ppmv. This paper reports the first use of a 3-D radar imaging for observing E-region field-aligned plasma irregularities (FAIs) in the midlatitude ionosphere. Five carrier frequencies equally spaced between 46.25 and 46.75 MHz were transmitted alternately with consecutive radar pulses, and 20 receivers were employed for receiving the radar echoes. The experiments were carried out using the middle and upper atmosphere radar (34.85°N, 136.10°E), with the radar beams steered to the geographic north and 6.6° north by east, at the zenith angles of 51.0° and 51.5°, respectively. The 2-D imaging with the echoes collected by the 19 of the 20 receivers revealed that in zonal dimension, the off-beam direction of arrival (DOA) of the echo region changed alternately between positive and negative values, which can be attributed to the highly localized FAIs drifting zonally through the radar beam. On the other hand, the off-beam DOA in meridional dimension was negative and positive, respectively, at higher and lower range locations, which were supposed to be due to the meridional drift component of FAIs. A combination of 5 frequencies and 19 receivers achieved a 3-D imaging of the FAI structures, illustrating small-scale FAI striations and bubblelike plasma structures in the radar volume. Moreover, declination of geomagnetic field line was examined from the imaged 3-D brightness distribution in the radar volume; the estimated declination of geomagnetic field line was in agreement with that computed from the International Geomagnetic Reference Field model in 2011. The Chinese HY-2A satellite microwave scatterometer (HSCAT) is designed to measure the ocean surface wind vector with a large observation swath. HSCAT is a Ku-band scatterometer that has continuously observing the earth’s surface for more than 6 years. Approximately, 30 000 orbit revolutions of scientific data are archived in its ground application system. To further understand the characteristics of the instrument, deeper analyses of these scientific data must be carried out. Currently, the geolocation accuracy of the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) has yet to be documented. However, geolocation errors can cause significant measurement bias, and have large impacts on the calibration and validation results. In this paper, the coastline crossing detection method is used to evaluate the geolocation errors of the NRCS data. Some coastal areas and islands where the NRCS data have large gradients are selected for the geolocation error analysis. The coastline inflection points can be identified on the basis that the radar backscatter of land and water exhibits a significant difference when the ocean surface wind speed is relatively low. The longitudes and latitudes of these points from different time periods are then fit to the global self-consistent hierarchical high-resolution shorelines map. The comparison results show that the overall distance error of HSCAT is approximately 2.59 km. This geolocation accuracy meets the instrument design requirements. The primary concern of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy of drop size distribution (DSD) retrievals for the rain region using global precipitation measurement (GPM) dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR). Direct comparison between ground and spaceborne radar might answer the question, but unfortunately, this is a difficult and challenging task that can result in largely unmeasurable uncertainty. In this paper, the self-consistent numerical method (SNM) was used to estimate microphysical parameters along rain profiles. The assessment of the SNM performance characterizes its accuracy in the microphysics retrieval. It follows that the profile data set used for the evaluation plays an important role in this process. The ideal solution would be to use real conditions. For this purpose, a new approach for providing vertical profiles closer to the natural vertical variability of rainfall microphysical characteristics and its global vertical structure can be derived from the observations of NASA dual-frequency, dual-polarization, Doppler radar (D3R)—a matched-beam, $\textit {Ku}$ - and $\textit {Ka}$ -band dual-frequency radar that is similar to the precipitation radar (DPR) on board the GPM core satellite. The profile data set was generated using reflectivity measurements collected in RHI mode, after correcting them for attenuation using the polarimetric measurements of the $\textit {Ku}$ -band. With this data set, the behavior of SNM is evaluated in the presence of the inaccuracy introduced by taking the constant value of $\mu $ and the measurement errors. The entire version 4 of the GPM DPR precipitation products obtained with data collected from September 1, 2014 to February 28, 2017 was used. In the presence of bright-band features, the rain region of matched scans, for which measurements were simultaneously collected by $\textit {Ku}$ - and $\textit {Ka}$ -band radars, was employed to retrieve DSD parameters with SNM and GPM algorithms. A direct comparison between the two procedures was performed in terms of merit factors. The results show a significant difference between the performance of the two methods by not taking into consideration the SNM procedures that, instead, are being performed by the GPM algorithms. In this paper, a novel 3-D imaging method achieved by combining the inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) technique and a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar system is presented. The high-resolution image of a target can be obtained within a limited imaging time interval, and the computational load can be reduced simultaneously because the time samples obtained by the ISAR technique can be used to play the role of space samples needed in the MIMO radar system. The adopted process of time selection method can help to realize the exact combination of the signals received by different antenna elements without producing nonequivalence between the time samples and the space samples which need to be substituted. Besides, the 2-D smoothed (2-D SL0) method, which is especially designed for 2-D signals in the compressed sensing (CS) technique, is used to realize the high-resolution imaging when there are gaps in the global observation angle without increasing the computation load or introducing the false estimated data. Furthermore, the algorithms for range alignment and velocity estimation under the 3-D imaging radar configuration are described explicitly. The infrared atmospheric sounder interferometer (IASI) onboard the Metop-A and Metop-B satellites is an essential instrument for numerical weather prediction centers. The IASI, with its 8461 channels, enables the observation of the surface and atmospheric geophysical variables twice a day around the world. This data volume will increase in the future, stressing the need for practical and efficient dimension reduction techniques for storage and transmission but also for inversion or assimilation. In a previous paper by Aires et al., a new dimension reduction method, the so-called bottleneck channel (BC), has been introduced. BCs are a good compromise between compression and channel selection techniques. In this paper, we introduce several new technical configurations of the BC approach, comparing their advantages/drawbacks. Comparisons are also made with two classical methodologies widely used in the satellite community: principal component analysis (PCA) compression and entropy reduction channel selection. Beyond the compression ability, the methodologies are tested on the temperature, water vapor, and ozone retrieval application using IASI measurements. Two approaches have been tested. First, theoretical retrieval improvement has been measured when using the various data reduction techniques. The BC achieves good theoretical improvements, comparable to noise-adjusted PCA (NAPCA), for the retrieval of the temperature, water vapor, and ozone. Second, a neural network inversion scheme is tested on real IASI observations using the several data reduction techniques. It is shown that BCs provide similar or better results than the other methods. The BCs present compression, denoising, and information content results comparable to the NAPCA, while preserving the physical meaning (i.e., actual channel brightness temperatures) of a channel selection approach. This has numerous advantages for inversion and assimilation: the mixing problem, contamination effects, minor constituents representation, or radiative transfer speed, and each of these will be discussed. In this paper, monitoring of metal-cased oil wells using the ultrawideband (UWB) radar is proposed. The inspection includes the detection and imaging of perforations and corroded areas in a metal pipe. Detection of small anomalies/ perforations on the surface of a narrow metal pipe is very challenging. Here, we present a method for imaging such small anomalies based on the extra time delay of the reflected pulse due to the effect of perforation in the radar near field. In this paper, the necessary concepts for the use of UWB radar specified for this application are developed and proved based on different measurement and simulation scenarios. We have experimentally demonstrated the effect of the perforations’ size on the time delay of reflected pulses. The distance between the perforation and the radar, for the near-field phenomenon, is critical for an effective detection and imaging. Therefore, we also studied the optimal distance between the radar and the perforation. Perforations with a size range of 1–3 cm are considered for the experiments and simulations. The experiments are done both in air and diesel. Synthetic aperture radar processing is used to reconstruct the images of the perforations and corroded area. This paper discusses the intersatellite radiometric calibration for microwave sounders in support of NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission. This paper is an extension of previous GPM Intersatellite Calibration Working Group work, which assesses the robustness of the Central Florida Remote Sensing Laboratory “double difference” technique for sounders intercalibration. In this paper, we will analyze the intercalibration between the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder on board the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project, the Microwave Humidity Sounder on board the MetOp-A and MetOp-B and NOAA-18 and NOAA-19, and the Sondeur Atmosphérique du Profil d’Humidité Intertropicale par Radiométrie sounder onboard the Megha-Tropiques satellite. The sensitivity of the calibration to the geophysical parameters and incidence angles is investigated using two years data. Here, it is observed that a reliable intercalibration can be made only when the path lengths of the two sensors are similar, so when matching the scan angles for the two sensors, the sensitivity of the biases upon the water vapor profiles is significantly reduced. Fully polarimetric model-based decompositions are developed by accounting for the physical scattering model and experimental polarimetric SAR data acquisition processes. These decompositions offer the promising straightforward interpretation and highly improved inversion models for visualizing images of scattering scenarios optimally. However, the attempts in existing decompositions to implement the split real and imaginary components of the $T_{13}$ element of the coherency matrix have been hampered by the absence of physical models to fit the coherency matrix. In this paper, two additional physical scattering submodels are derived. The real and imaginary parts of $T_{13}$ are accounted for by implementing two newly developed physical scattering models. (One is for oriented dipole scattering and the other is for oriented quarter-wave reflection.) Furthermore, this paper is extended by implementing these physical models into a six-component scattering power model-based decomposition. To this date, the developed novel decompositions account for the maximum elements of the coherency matrix in a physical manner compared to the existing model-based decompositions. The proposed novel decomposition is tested on L-band and X-band fully polarimetric SAR data sets of the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2/Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 and the X-band TerraSAR-X, respectively. This new decomposition produces additional two scattering submatrix components. Such scattering components are prevalent in vegetation and urban areas and even dominant over highly oriented urban scenarios. The new method enhances the truly existing double-bounce scattering contributions and reduces the overrated volume scattering from double-bounce scatterers. By comparing the results, it is found that the proposed decomposition considerably enhances the SAR image quality and its more correct visualizing presentation compared to existing decompositions. It is also found to be more robust over the oriented urban areas than the existing decompositions, resulting from the utilization of both the real and imaginary components of $T_{13}$ polarimetric information in a physical scattering manner. Underwater object detection and tracking are of considerable interest in offshore defense. Recently, a new method that takes advantage of direct-current resistivity survey techniques has been introduced as a complement to the conventional detection method for use in acoustically noisy conditions. However, dedicated rapid target localization methods are required to enable real-time tracking in this detection method. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a real-time localization method using grid-based template matching. The main features of our method are as follows: 1) measurement data sets from two separate detection lines are used; 2) template matching based on correlation is used; 3) the templates are precalculated by numerical modeling; and 4) real-time localization processing is implemented by efficient calculations. To verify our method, we first performed experiments for stationary target object positions under a water tank condition: template versus numerical modeling data and template versus physical modeling data. Next, real-time localization experiments for a moving target in the water tank were conducted using the real-time data at 3-Hz refresh rate. In the real-time experiments, we confirmed that the estimated positions could keep track of the actual target positions continuously. This paper proposed a 3-D surface deformation retrieval algorithm for synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) based on a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) as a transmitter and a fixed receiver (GNSS-based InSAR), where simultaneous multiple GNSS transmitters and a repeat-pass concept were adopted. This paper consists of three parts. First, the interferometric phase model under repeat-pass concept was established for both general and bistatic permanent scatterer (PS) cases in the GNSS-based InSAR. Second, the 3-D deformation retrieval algorithm was presented, and the position dilution of precision was analytically derived to evaluate the performance of measured 3-D deformation. Third, using a designed transponder onboard displacement device as the bistatic PS, the feasibility of 3-D deformation retrieval using GNSS-based InSAR was confirmed by repeat-pass experiments, where four simultaneously available Beidou-2 Inclined Geosynchronous Orbit satellites were used as transmitters, and 16 repeat-pass data sets were collected. Using the proposed algorithm, the final experimental results suggested that the GNSS-based InSAR could obtain deformation estimations with better accuracy than at 5 mm in all three directions. Synthetic aperture sonar and synthetic aperture radar involve the creation of high-resolution images of a scene via scattered signals recorded at different locations. Each pixel of the reconstructed image includes information obtained from multiple aspects due to the changing position of the sources/receivers. In this paper, the aspect-dependent scattering at each pixel is exploited to provide additional information about the scene; this paper presents a framework for converting and utilizing multiaspect data, as well as several examples. For sonar data, as is presented here, the aspect dependence may be leveraged to separate objects of interest from the background, to understand the local bathymetry, or for visualizing acoustic shadowing in full circular synthetic aperture sonar images. Several examples of images of the seafloor containing objects of interest are presented for both circular and linear apertures. In addition, the aspect dependence of low-frequency elastic scattering from objects may be used to understand the underlying scattering physics, which is of potential use in fields such as target recognition and nondestructive testing; a laboratory example is presented. Surface soil moisture (SSM) plays significant roles in various scientific fields, including agriculture, hydrology, meteorology, and ecology. However, the spatial resolutions of microwave SSM products are too coarse for regional applications. Most current optical/thermal infrared SSM retrieval models cannot directly estimate the quantitative volumetric soil water content without establishing empirical relationships between ground-based SSM measurements and satellite-derived proxies of SSM. Therefore, in this paper, SSM is estimated directly from 5-km-resolution Chinese Geostationary Meteorological Satellite FY-2E data based on an elliptical-new SSM retrieval model developed from the synergistic use of diurnal cycles of land surface temperature (LST) and net surface shortwave radiation (NSSR). The elliptical-original model was constructed for bare soil and did not consider the impacts of different fractional vegetation cover (FVC) conditions. To optimize the elliptical-original model for regional-scale SSM estimates, it is improved in this paper by considering the influence of FVC, which is based on a dimidiate pixel model and a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer normalized difference vegetation index product. A preliminary validation of the model is conducted based on ground measurements from the counties of Maqu, Luqu, and Ruoergai in the source area of the Yellow River. A correlation coefficient (R) of 0.620, a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.146 m3/m3, and a bias of 0.038 m3/m3 were obtained when comparing the in situ measurements with the FY-2E-derived SSM using the elliptical-original model. In contrast, the FY-2E-derived SSM using the elliptical-new model exhibited greater consistency with the ground measurements, as evidenced by an R of 0.845, an RMSE of 0.064 m3/m3, and a bias of 0.017 m3/m3. To provide accurate SSM estimates, high-accuracy FVC, LST, and NSSR data are required. Salt marsh vegetation extent and zonation are often controlled by bottom up factors determined in part by the frequency and duration of tidal inundation. Tidal inundation during remote-sensing mapping of salt marsh resources can alter the resulting image classification. The degree of this impact on mapping with very high resolution (VHR) imagery has yet to be determined. This paper utilizes topobathymetric light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data and bathtub models of a tidal stage at 5 cm intervals from mean low water (MLW) to mean high water (MHW) and determines the impact of tidal variation in salt marsh mapping within Jamaica Bay, NY, USA. Tidal inundation models were compared with the Worldview-2 and Quickbird-2 imageries acquired at a range of tidal stages. The modeled inundation of normalized difference vegetation index and smooth cordgrass (S. alterniflora) maps was compared from MLW to MHW. This paper finds that at 0.6 m above MLW, only 3.5% of S. alterniflora is inundated. This paper demonstrates a modeling approach integrating VHR satellite remote-sensing data and topobathymetric LiDAR data to address tidal variation in salt marsh mapping. This paper proposes a multiunit light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system calibration procedure to directly estimate the mounting parameters relating multiple spinning multibeam laser scanners to the global navigation satellite system/inertial navigation system (GNSS/INS) unit onboard a mobile terrestrial platform in order to derive point clouds with high-positional accuracy. This procedure is based on the use of conjugate planar/linear features in overlapping point clouds derived from different drive runs. In order to increase the efficiency of semiautomatic conjugate feature extraction from LiDAR data, specifically designed calibration boards covered by highly reflective surfaces that could be easily deployed and set up within outdoor environments are used in this paper. To ensure the accuracy of the estimated mounting parameters, an optimal configuration of target primitives and drive runs is determined by analyzing the potential impact of bias in mounting parameters of a LiDAR unit on the resultant point cloud for different orientations of target primitives and different drive run scenarios. This impact is also verified experimentally by simulating a bias in each mounting parameter separately. Finally, the optimal configuration is used within an experimental setup to evaluate the performance of the proposed calibration procedure through the a posteriori variance factor of least squares adjustment and the quality of fit of adjusted point cloud to linear/planar surfaces before and after the calibration process. The proposed calibration approach attained an accuracy of 1.42 cm, which is better than the accuracy expected based on the specifications of the involved hardware components, i.e., the LiDAR and GNSS/INS units. Similar to the conventional squint mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging processing, the estimation of Doppler centroid is one key problem for the low-squint-mode (within the range of [−5°, 5°]) multichannel in an azimuth high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) SAR system. In this paper, based on the electromagnetic scattering model, a novel weighted Doppler centroid estimation approach is proposed for the multichannel in the azimuth HRWS (MC-HRWS) SAR system. First, Maxwell’s equations are employed to derive the echo model for the multichannel SAR system. Then, an improved backscattering model is presented based on the small perturbation method and the available echo model, which is adopted to produce the weights for Doppler centroid estimation. More importantly, in order to improve the precision of Doppler centroid estimation, a weighted ambiguity-free Doppler centroid estimation approach is proposed, where the range-variant characteristic of Doppler centroid is employed to resolve the ambiguity number of Doppler centroid, and the echoes from different range bins with different signal-to-noise ratios are considered. In addition, the Cramer–Rao low bound of the estimated Doppler centroid is also discussed in this paper.
