In this paper, we developed and evaluated a phenology-based coherent scattering model to estimate terrain backscatter at the L-band for growing corn. The scattering model accounted for combined effects from periodicity in soil and vegetation, and changes in plant structure and phenology. The model estimates were compared with observations during the two growing seasons in North Central Florida. The unbiased average root-mean-square (rms) differences between the model and observations decreased from 5 to 1.31 dB when these combined effects were included. During the early stage, direct scattering from soil was the primary scattering mechanism, and as the vegetation increased, the interactions between stems and soil became the dominant scattering mechanism. The most sensitive soil parameters were moisture content and rms height, and vegetation parameters were the widths of stems, leaves, and ears, and the stem water content. This paper demonstrates that it is necessary to consider periodicity and plant structural effects in algorithms to retrieve realistic soil moisture in agricultural terrain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The conventional strategy to download images captured by satellites is to compress the data on board and then transmit them via the downlink. It often happens that the capacity of the downlink is too small to accommodate all the acquired data, so the images are trimmed and/or transmitted through lossy regimes. This paper introduces a coding system that increases the amount and quality of the downloaded imaging data. The main insight of this paper is to use both the uplink and the downlink to code the images. The uplink is employed to send reference information to the satellite so that the onboard coding system can achieve higher efficiency. This reference information is computed on the ground, possibly employing extensive data and computational resources. The proposed system is called dual link image coding. As it is devised in this paper, it is suitable for Earth observation satellites with polar orbits. Terrestrial laser scanning is a promising tool for estimating leaf angle (including leaf inclination and azimuthal angles) distribution (LAD). However, previous studies focus on the retrieval of leaf inclination angle distribution, very few studies have considered the distribution of leaf azimuthal angle due to the restriction of measurement techniques. In this paper, we developed a new method to obtain more accurate leaf inclination and azimuthal angle estimations based on leaf point cloud segmentation and filtration and then fit LAD functions using two-parameter Beta-distribution model. In addition, we constructed a new projection coefficient model with two parameters $G(\theta $ , $\varphi$) using Nilson’s algorithm based on the accurate retrieval of LAD. To assess the influence of leaf numbers on leaf inclination and azimuthal angle estimations, we modeled 160 individual leaves and 10 trees with different leaf numbers. In addition, to validate the final results, we also sampled three magnolia trees with different leaf numbers and manually measured leaf inclination and azimuthal angles of all their leaves using an angle measurement device. All results showed that the method proposed in this paper can provide accurate leaf inclination and azimuthal angles (leaf inclination angle: $R^{2} = 0.98$ , RMSE = 24° and leaf azimuthal angle: $R^{2} = 0.99$ , RMSE = 3.44°). The simulated LAD and $G(\theta $ , $\varphi$) estimations based on these leaf inclination and azimuthal angles were strongly correlated with those obtained from ground truth measurements ($P >0.05$). The advanced MEdium Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI II) is a major instrument onboard the Chinese FengYun 3D satellite, which was launched in November 2017. Extensive measurements were performed during MERSI II prelaunch testing to ensure effective characterization for on-orbit calibration. This paper gives a brief overview of the prelaunch performance testing conducted for MERSI II, as well as its improvements in terms of instrument design compared to MERSI I. The prelaunch calibration methodology and radiometric performance are detailed, including dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, noise equivalent differential temperature, linearity, and response uniformity. The assessment results indicate that most bands perform effectively with mirror specification noncompliances in a few reflective solar bands (RSBs). In addition, investigation of the stability and uniformity of the spherical integrating source indicates that they have a critical impact on the performance assessment and prelaunch calibration of RSBs. The temperature-dependence features of thermal emissive bands’ performances are also discussed in terms of their sensitivity to the operating temperature of the focal plane assembly and instrument circumstance. This paper also shows that the self-stability of the calibration source and the representation of the assessment methods are important as they affect the results of instrument performance evaluation. This paper examines the potential in extracting the instantaneous location of maritime moving targets using a passive multistatic radar with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as illuminators of opportunity and a single receiver. This paper presents a theoretical framework for the localization of a moving target from a set of bistatic range measurements. The algorithm and its predicted accuracy are presented. The localization is achieved by what is essentially a multilateration technique, which can be applied while the transmitting platform is also in motion. The algorithms and the accuracy predictions, as a function of the number of transmitters, have been experimentally confirmed via a dedicated experimental campaign, where two different maritime targets were detected by up to 12 GNSS satellites belonging to different satellite constellations (GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo) simultaneously. To the best of the author’s knowledge, these are the first results of their kind and on this scale not only for GNSS-based passive radar but also for multistatic radar in general. Tandem-L is proposed as a spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mission developed and operated by the German Aerospace Center in cooperation with several Helmholtz research centers and the German space industries. The mission concept comprises two fully polarimetric radar satellites providing monostatic and bistatic SAR imagery. A key feature of these SAR sensors is the employment of large lightweight unfurlable mesh reflectors fed by digital feed arrays. The main advantage of this new SAR system concept is the provision of large antenna apertures in space and flexible operation via reconfigurable feed electronics. By this, it becomes possible to map, for the first time, a continuous 350-km wide swath with a 7-m azimuth resolution with excellent noise equivalent sigma zero and ambiguity suppression. This paper shall give an overview on the technical aspects of the Tandem-L SAR instrument and antenna design. In particular, after a short review of the SAR system requirements, the concept of reflector SAR systems is outlined and the operation principle is presented. General guidelines for the design of array-fed reflector antennas with application to SAR imaging are given. Then, the optimization approach of the feed array design is detailed with a specific emphasis on a fixed beamforming concept in azimuth. In this context, also the problem of cross-pol pattern mitigation is addressed. These optimization steps are shown to be crucial for achieving the performance requirements in quad-pol acquisitions. Beamforming in elevation is performed onboard the spacecraft via digital hardware. This paper presents the beamforming architecture on receive for Tandem-L, which would apply in general for instance also to planar multielevation beam SAR antennas with Scan-On-Receive capabilities. Tandem-L is operated as a staggered SAR, which means varying the pulse repetition interval from pulse to pulse. In this context, the major design challenges are presented. Moreover, the impact of pulse staggering on the imaging performance is discussed. Tandem-L’s SAR performance is presented by means of numerical simulations showing that the performance requirements imposed by the scientific user community could be met. This paper proposes a novel method based on deformable dictionary learning for detecting the regions of change between multitemporal image pairs. We build on our previous work, which constructed a pair of dictionaries. The main shortcoming of this method was its dependence on a large amount of training data. In practice, there is often a shortage of ground-truthed training images, which limits the expression capability of the resulting dictionaries. This paper overcomes this challenge by incorporating the concept of deformation, wherein each atom of a dictionary is no longer a simple image patch, but instead is a flexible image deformation function. This enables the creation of more expressive dictionaries, capable of generalizing to a far greater variety of image patterns, while using a far smaller amount of ground-truthed images for supervised dictionary training. Deformation similarity is employed for patch matching to find the best set of atoms in the difference image (DI) dictionary for reconstructing image patches for a new input DI. Each such atom can be deformed to achieve a better match, thus extending generality while reducing the number of atoms needed in the dictionary. Multiple deformed atoms are weighted and combined to best reconstruct the input DI patch. Then, the same set of deformations and weights is projected to the corresponding atoms in the CD dictionary to obtain the output change-detection map. Experiments in six realistic synthetic aperture radar data sets demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the proposed method in comparison with five other state-of-the-art methods from the literature. Image decolorization is known to be an effective way in transferring a color image into a gray one while well preserving the major information of all three bands. In this paper, a simple yet effective hyperspectral image visualization framework based on decolorization, named decolorization based hyperspectral visualization, is proposed, which enables us to fully exploit the benefits of decolorization technique. The proposed framework consists of the following two main steps. First, the hyperspectral image is partitioned into nine subsets of adjacent hyperspectral bands and the averaged band of each subset is calculated. Then, the dimension reduced image is further divided into three groups of adjacent bands, and the bands in each group are fused by using an image decolorization method. The main contribution of this paper is that the strong correlations in two different fields, i.e., image decolorization and hyperspectral image visualization, are first built. Experiments performed on several real hyperspectral data sets demonstrate that the proposed framework can obtain outstanding visualization performance in terms of both subjective and objective evaluations. Using mobile Light Detection and Ranging point clouds to accomplish road scene labeling tasks shows promise for a variety of applications. Most existing methods for semantic labeling of point clouds require a huge number of fully supervised point cloud scenes, where each point needs to be manually annotated with a specific category. Manually annotating each point in point cloud scenes is labor intensive and hinders practical usage of those methods. To alleviate such a huge burden of manual annotation, in this paper, we introduce an active learning method that avoids annotating the whole point cloud scenes by iteratively annotating a small portion of unlabeled supervoxels and creating a minimal manually annotated training set. In order to avoid the biased sampling existing in traditional active learning methods, a neighbor-consistency prior is exploited to select the potentially misclassified samples into the training set to improve the accuracy of the statistical model. Furthermore, lots of methods only consider short-range contextual information to conduct semantic labeling tasks, but ignore the long-range contexts among local variables. In this paper, we use a higher order Markov random field model to take into account more contexts for refining the labeling results, despite of lacking fully supervised scenes. Evaluations on three data sets show that our proposed framework achieves a high accuracy in labeling point clouds although only a small portion of labels is provided. Moreover, comparative experiments demonstrate that our proposed framework is superior to traditional sampling methods and exhibits comparable performance to those fully supervised models. Super-resolution image reconstruction has been utilized to overcome the problem of spatial resolution limitation in hyperspectral (HS) imaging. To improve the spatial resolution of HS image, this paper proposes an HS-multispectral (MS) fusion method, which exploits spatial and spectral correlations and proper regularization. High spatial correlation between MS image and the desired high-resolution HS image is conserved via an over-completed dictionary, and the spectral degradation between them projected onto the space of sparsity is applied as the spectral constraint. The high spectral correlation between high-spatial- and low-spatial-resolution HS image is preserved through linear spectral unmixing. The idea of an interactive feedback proposed in our previous work is also used when dealing with spatial reconstruction and unmixing. Low-rank property is introduced in this paper to regularize the sparse coefficients of the HS patch matrix, which is utilized as the spatial constraint. Experiments on both simulated and real data sets demonstrate that the proposed fusion algorithm achieves lower spectral distortions and the super-resolution results are superior to those of other state-of-the-art methods. This paper presents the ice thickness, fine resolution internal reflecting horizons (IRHs), and distinct bottom topography measurements of Chinese Kunlun Station and Grove Mountains, Antarctica, derived from sounding these glaciers with a high-resolution radar. To enable the development of next-generation ice-sheet models, we need information on IRHs, bottom topography, and basal conditions. To this end, we performed measurements with the progressively improved ice-sounding radar system, currently known as the high-resolution ice-sounding radar developed by the Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation and Sensing Technology of Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. We processed the collected data using focused synthetic aperture radar (SAR) algorithm named the modified range migration algorithm using curvelets and the modified nonlinear chirp scaling algorithm to improve radar sensitivity and reduce along-track surface clutter. Representative results from selected transects indicate that we successfully sounded 3-km-thick ice with a fine resolution of 0.75 m. In this paper, we provide a brief description of the radar system, discuss the focused SAR processing algorithms, and provide sample results to demonstrate the successful sounding of the ice sheet in Antarctica. Cloud radiative forcing climate signals cannot be detected and proved sufficiently by the existing space-based Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) measurements due to the insufficient instrument calibration accuracy, relative to the sizes of mere decadal-scale trends. This paper, therefore, introduces a new project called the Moon and ERB Experiment (MERBE). Its methodology is for all earth observations using broadband thermal detectors, such as bolometers, to adhere toward more traceable calibration standards based on scans of our moon. This traceability limits instrument-dependent biases and spurious drifts for the past decades of existing earth data measurements as well as future measurements. The goal of the MERBE project is to substantially increase existing satellite climate data accuracy; therefore, a reexamination of all aspects of space-based ERB device calibration was also warranted. This paper concentrates on the improvement of ERB data quality from the level of detector voltages and onward. A component model of bolometer thermal and electronic time response and offset effects is used to design an improved inversion filter, which deconvolves path direction dependence of a scanning thermal detector. For every ERB instrument on the TRMM, Terra, Aqua, and SNPP satellites, instantaneous error reductions are achieved in all recovered MERBE radiance measurements. Classification is an important technique for remote sensing data interpretation. In order to enhance the performance of a supervised classifier and ensure the lowest possible cost of the training samples used in the process, active learning (AL) can be used to optimize the training sample set. At the same time, integrating spatial information can help to enhance the separability between similar classes, which can in turn reduce the need for training samples in AL. To effectively integrate spatial information into the AL framework, this paper proposes a new active relearning (ARL) model for remote sensing image classification. In particular, our model is used to relearn the spatial features on the classification map, which contributes significantly to enhancing the performance of the classifier. We integrate the relearning model into the AL framework, with the aim to accelerate the convergence of AL and further reduce the labeling cost. Under the newly developed ARL framework, we propose two spatial–spectral uncertainty criteria to optimize the procedure for selecting new training samples. Furthermore, an adaptive multiwindow ARL model is also introduced in this paper. Our experiments with two hyperspectral images and two very high resolution images indicate that the ARL model exhibits faster convergence speed with fewer samples than traditional AL methods. This paper presents an evaluation of the quality of data from the MicroWave Humidity Sounder-2, flown on the FY-3C polar orbiting satellite, and first results of trials assimilating the data in all-sky conditions in the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts’ assimilation system. This instrument combines traditional microwave humidity sounding capabilities at 183 GHz with new channels at 118 GHz, which have never before been available from space. The aim of this paper is twofold: to contribute to the calibration/validation of this satellite by evaluating the data and to test for the first time the impact of assimilating 118-GHz sounding channels in a global numerical weather prediction system. MWHS-2 was first evaluated by comparing observation minus short-range forecast statistics to similar instruments, which indicated that the quality was generally similar. Adding the 118- and 183-GHz channels to the full operational observing system led to small improvements in the short-range (~12 h) forecast accuracy for both sets of channels, and improvements in the 2–4-day wind forecast accuracy for the 183-GHz channels. Short-range forecasts were improved for global humidity in particular when assimilating the 183-GHz channels (0.5% improvement) and for cloud and low-level wind in the Southern Hemisphere extra-tropics when assimilating the 118-GHz channels (by, respectively, 0.5% and 0.2%). In the absence of other atmospheric observations, assimilating the 118-GHz channels improved the global forecast accuracy, but the overall impact was less than for the 183-GHz channels, or for equivalent Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A channels. Permanent scatterer interferometry is a multitemporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar technique that produces high-accuracy ground deformation measurement. A high density of permanent scatterer (PS) is required to provide accurate results. In natural environments with low PS density, distributed scatterers (DSs) could serve as additional coherent observations. This paper introduces a polarimetric scattering property-based adaptive filtering method that preserves PS candidates and filters DS candidates. To further increase the coherence estimate of DS candidates, the technique includes a complex coherence decomposition that adaptively selects the most stable scattering mechanisms, thus improving pixel coherence estimation. The proposed method was evaluated on 11 quad-polarized ALOS PALSAR images and 21 dual-polarized Sentinel-1 images acquired over San Fernando Valley, CA, USA, and Groningen, The Netherlands, respectively. The application of this method increased the number of coherent pixels by almost a factor of eight compared with a single-polarization channel. This paper concludes that a coherence estimate can be significantly improved by applying scattering property-based adaptive filtering and coherence matrix decomposition and accurate displacement measurements can be achieved. Since the beginning of the altimeter mission TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P), followed by Jason-1 and Jason-2 on similar orbits, and many other missions on different orbits (ERS, EnviSat, etc.), mean sea level (MSL) products became essential for the comprehension of global ocean circulation. Since early in the T/P mission, a suspicious signal, having a period of near 59 days and amplitude of roughly 5 mm, was apparent in the Global MSL record. Compared with the 4–5-mm amplitude of the annual signal, the 59-day signal has understandably attracted attention. Moreover, the same signal has been subsequently detected in Jason-1 and later in Jason-2 MSLs. In 2010, the Ocean Surface Topography Science Team (OSTST) concluded this signal as the aliasing of a higher frequency error inherited from the tide model correction: the semi-diurnal wave S2. The source of this error was mainly attributed to T/P measurements, which were assimilated in ocean tide models. When these models are used in the computation of T/P MSL, most of the error cancels. However, this error is communicated to Jason-1 and Jason-2 MSLs. In order to gather and publish the OSTST analyses on this matter, this paper first attempts to list the myriad possibilities for the puzzling 59-day error in MSL. Then, this paper goes deeper into the description of the main contributor to this list: the tide models error. Indeed, since 2010, considerable efforts have been undertaken within the ocean tide community in order to correct ocean tide S2-waves from this error, particularly in the Goddard Ocean Tide (GOT) and finite element solution (FES) latest versions. Comparing several GOT and FES versions and a pure hydrodynamic tide model, this paper assesses, quantifies, and describes a reduction of the MSL 59-day error thanks to the latest releases. These analyses also confirm that a large part of this error has its origins in the T/P mission and has contaminated ocean tide solutions and Jason-1 and Jason-2 MSLs. They also suggest that ocean tide is not the only possible vector. Jason-1 and Jason-2 MSLs contain additional 59-day error—though to a lesser extent—that may either come from the measurements themselves or from another vector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Under the umbrella of tensor algebra, this paper proposes a new sparse-coding-based classifier (SCC) for hyperspectral imagery classification (HIC). By utilizing the tensor forms of hyperspectral pixels, we advance a tensor sparse-coding model which preserves as many original spatial constraints of a pixel and its spatial neighbors as possible. Furthermore, to alleviate the classification uncertainty resulted from widely existing mixed pixels, this paper constructs a regularization term for maximizing the likelihood of sparse-coding tensor defined on the posterior class probability. By combining the tensor sparse coding with maximizing likelihood estimation, a hybrid probabilistic SCC with spatial neighbor tensor (HPSCC-SNT) is proposed, which makes the pixels be well represented by the training pixels belonging to the same class. The performance of HPSCC-SNT is evaluated on three real hyperspectral imagery data sets, and the results show that it can achieve accurate and robust HIC results, and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. It has been previously demonstrated that it is possible to perform remote vibrometry using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in conjunction with the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFrFT). Specifically, the DFrFT estimates the chirp parameters (related to the instantaneous acceleration of a vibrating object) of a slow-time signal associated with the SAR image. However, ground clutter surrounding a vibrating object introduces uncertainties in the estimate of the chirp parameter retrieved via the DFrFT method. To overcome this shortcoming, various techniques based on subspace decomposition of the SAR slow-time signal have been developed. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of these techniques is limited to values of signal-to-clutter ratio ≥5 dB. In this paper, a new vibrometry technique based on displaced-phase-center antenna (DPCA) SAR is proposed. The main characteristic of a DPCA-SAR is that the clutter signal can be canceled, ideally, while retaining information on the instantaneous position and velocity of a target. In this paper, a novel method based on the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is introduced for performing vibrometry using the slow-time signal of a DPCA-SAR. The DPCA-SAR signal model for a vibrating target, the mathematical characterization of the EKF technique, and vibration estimation results for various types of vibration dynamics are presented. Recently, multifeature learning in collaborative representation classification (CRC) for hyperspectral images has generated promising performance. In this paper, two novel multifeature learning algorithms that update dictionary directly and indirectly are proposed. In order to offer the complementarity of multifeature, four different types of features—global feature (i.e., Gabor feature), local feature (i.e., local binary pattern), shape feature (i.e., extended multiattribute profiles), and spectral feature—are adopted in this paper. Under the hypothesis that most of the features should share the same coding pattern in CRC, this paper proposes to learn proper dictionaries for each feature until obtaining stable codes in a linear classifier. Furthermore, to avoid the explicit mapping of infinite-dimensional dictionaries in a nonlinear kernelized classifier, an indirect approach to construct the transformation matrix from original dictionaries to learn new dictionaries is developed. Three real hyperspectral images acquired from different sensors are adopted for performance evaluation. This paper addresses the performance in the retrieval of 3-D mean deformation maps by exploiting simultaneous or quasi-simultaneous squinted synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometric acquisitions in a repeat-pass scenario. In multisatellite or multibeam low earth observation missions, the availability of two (or more) lines of sight (LOSs) allows the simultaneous acquisition of SAR images with different squint angles, hence improving the sensitivity to the north–south component of the deformation. Due to the simultaneity of the acquisitions, the troposphere will be highly correlated and, therefore, will tend to cancel out when performing the differential measurement between the interferograms obtained with the different LOSs, hence resulting in a practically troposphere-free estimation of the along-track deformation measurement. In practice, however, the atmospheric noise in the differential measurement will increase for increasing angular separations. This paper expounds the mathematical framework to derive the performance by properly considering the correlation of the atmospheric delays between the simultaneous acquisitions. To that aim, the hybrid Cramér–Rao bound is exploited making use of the autocorrelation function of the troposphere. This paper evaluates the calibration quality during the blackbody (BB) warm-up cool-down cycle for thermal emissive bands onboard Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). This evaluation utilizes data from Aqua MODIS Collection 6 Level-1B products and VIIRS Sensor Data Records in 6-min granule format provided by the NASA Land Science Investigator-led Processing System. Nearly simultaneous hyperspectral measurements from the Aqua Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and the S-NPP Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) are used as references for MODIS and VIIRS, respectively. Each AIRS footprint of 13.5 km is co-located with multiple MODIS pixels while each CrIS field of view of 14 km is co-located with multiple VIIRS pixels. The corresponding AIRS-simulated MODIS and CrIS-simulated VIIRS radiances are derived by convolutions based on sensor-dependent relative spectral response functions. In this paper, the analysis mainly focuses on the bands that are used in sea surface temperature products. The results show that there is virtually no impact for MODIS bands 22 and 23 and bands 31 and 32 for a BB temperature below 290 K; however, when the BB temperature increases above 290 K, the impact is up to 0.3 K for bands 22 and 23 and 0.05 K for bands 31 and 32, respectively. For VIIRS, BB temperature-dependent drifts are observed in M15 and M16, which can reach 0.15 and 0.1 K, respectively, over the operational BB temperature range and the VIIRS brightness temperature range. Focusing on open forests and woodlands within the Injune Landscape Collaborative Project research area in central southeast Queensland, Australia, and using dual-pol (HH and HV) ALOS PALSAR repeat-pass InSAR data (temporal baseline of 92 days), this paper explores the detection of forest disturbance from the spaceborne repeat-pass InSAR correlation magnitude by developing a simple and efficient forest disturbance detection approach. In particular, a generic physical InSAR scattering model is derived by accounting for the forest disturbance information as well as the normal temporal decorrelation effects that are later compensated for using the modified Random Volume over Ground model. Based on the generic model, a quantitative indicator of forest disturbance is retrieved, namely, disturbance index that varies from 0 (no disturbance) to 1 (complete deforestation). This index is compared with that identified using a time series of Landsat sensor data over a selective logging area and has a relative root mean square error of 13% at a spatial resolution of 0.8 ha. This paper highlights the use of the co-pol InSAR correlation magnitude for forest disturbance detection, which serves as a complimentary application to using the cross-pol counterpart for forest height inversion in a companion work. Wind profilers (WPs) are coherent pulsed Doppler radars operating in the ultrahigh frequency and very high frequency bands. These atmospheric radars receive backscattered signals from the atmospheric and nonatmospheric targets. Atmospheric targets include clear air turbulence, precipitation, mesospheric turbulence, ionospheric D, E, F regions, and meteors, whereas nonatmospheric targets are objects like airplanes, birds, insects, hills, and so on. Modern WPs operate for long hours and often change radar operating parameters. Echoes from one beam direction are observed for 8 to 32 s and a set of Doppler power spectra is generated. WPs generate more than a hundred sets of Doppler power spectra per hour. These Doppler spectra often contain echoes from more than one target. The studies for atmospheric modeling and prediction require analysis of the backscattered signal. In order to facilitate systematic study, the data need to be classified and archived according to the atmospheric target type. Considering the large data volume consisting of echoes from different atmospheric targets, there is a need of an automated classification technique that segregates the Doppler power spectral data according to the types of atmospheric targets. The technique is expected to operate in real time with the data generation. This paper presents a spectral feature-based classification (SFBC) method for the classification of Doppler power spectra. This method associates three to four descriptor spectral features with each type of atmospheric target. The SFBC method classifies the data into a particular type of the atmospheric target if concurrent occurrence of descriptor features corresponding to that target type is observed. This paper presents the results indicating that the SFBC classifies the data from different WP radars with good accuracy. Hyperspectral image (HSI) noise reduction is an active research topic in HSI processing due to its significance in improving the performance for object detection and classification. In this paper, we propose a joint spectral and spatial low-rank (LR) regularized method for HSI denoising, based on the assumption that the free-noise component in an observed signal can exist in latent low-dimensional structure while the noise component does not have this property. The proposed HSI denoising method not only considers the traditional LR property across the spectral domain but also leverages nonlocal LR property over the spatial domain. The main contribution of this paper is the incorporation of the low-rankness-based nonlocal similarity into sparse representation to characterize the spatial structure. Specially, the similar patches in each cluster usually contain similar sharp structure such as edges and textures; LR performed on cluster entitles to achieve a lower rank than that on the global spectral correlation. To make the proposed method more tractable and robust, we develop a variable splitting-based technique to solve the optimization problem. Experiment results on both simulated and real hyperspectral data sets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods with significant improvements both visually and quantitatively. The AisaOWL thermal hyperspectral instrument, manufactured by Specim, is a relatively new push-broom sensor well suited to airborne environmental surveys. The sensor covers the 7.6-12.6 μm part of the long-wave infrared region with 102 continuous bands, and is capable of imaging in low-light conditions. The detector array is a mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) semiconductor, which has an inherent randomly varying dark current for random pixels. This manifests in the raw data as a pixel switching between different intensity levels. These pixels are termed "blinkers" by the manufacturer. For each data acquisition, the pixels need to be tested for blinking behavior as different pixels are affected during each acquisition. However, little is known about the number of blink events, the duration of frames, or the optimal length of data acquisition. This paper presents the characterization of the blinking nature of pixels in the MCT detector array to provide guidance on data acquisition and processing. This paper finds that blinking behavior is not completely random, with some pixels more prone to blinking behavior than others. Most blinking pixels have only a few short blinks; therefore, there is still a considerable amount of good data in a blinking pixel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple-input multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO SAR) system has drawn considerable attention because of its extra degrees of freedom for high resolution and wide swath compared with the traditional multichannel SAR system. But how to extract the matched signal without the unmatched interferences is the foremost task for MIMO SAR system. In this paper, by using the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing chirp signals as the transmitted signals, it is demonstrated that the robust principal component analysis (RPCA) method can be successfully employed for ground moving target indication (GMTI) with no need for separating the matched signal and unmatched interferences. It is because the unmatched interference is proven to have low-rank property and noise-level magnitude, which can be separated apart from the matched signal with the RPCA method. However, the traditional RPCA methods may be restricted by the high computational burden due to the complex decompositions and multiple iterations. Hence, a fast interferometry RPCA method is proposed specially for GMTI mode, which takes full advantage of the characteristics of along-track interferometry SAR system. It can improve the probability of detection under low signal-to-clutter-and-noise ratio. Additionally, it will dramatically shorten the computational time. Furthermore, the proposed method can also estimate the radial velocities of the moving targets simultaneously. Surface roughness is a land-surface parameter that is widely used in terrain analysis. Some typical roughness details, which have important effects on surface analysis, fail to be characterized on previous roughness maps. The objective of this paper is to provide a more accurate small-to-large scale roughness overview. The new roughness method is designed based on a complete orthogonal system called the V-system. The V-system roughness utilizes the special functions to detect and extract the roughness characteristics from high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs). In this paper, Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeterderived DEMs are used as the source data for the roughness calculation. Compared with the global root-mean-square slope and Fourier-based roughness maps, the V-system roughness maps show that more typical roughness details have been added to clearly indicate the small roughness variations on the large map. Furthermore, the reliability and practicability of V-system roughness are demonstrated based on the multiresolution DEMs. As an example, the statistical parameters of the roughness characteristics in the lunar Maria and highlands identify the fact that the highlands are rougher at all scales than the Maria. Chang'e-3 (CE-3) has been the first spacecraft to soft land on the moon since the Soviet Union's Luna 24 in 1976. The spacecraft arrived at Mare Imbrium on December 14, 2013, and the same day, Yutu lunar rover separated from lander to start its exploration of the surface and the subsurface around the landing site. The rover was equipped, among other instruments, with two lunar penetrating radar systems having a working frequency of 60 and 500 MHz. The radars acquired data for about two weeks while the rover was slowly moving along a path of about 114 m. At navigation point N0209, the rover got stacked into the lunar soil and after that only data at a fixed position could be collected. The low-frequency radar data have been analyzed by different authors and published in two different papers, which reported totally controversial interpretations of the radar cross sections. This paper is devoted to resolve such controversy by carefully analyzing and comparing the data collected on the moon by Yutu rover and on earth by a prototype of LPR mounted onboard a model of the CE-3 lunar rover. Such analysis demonstrates that the deep radar features previously ascribed to the lunar shallow stratigraphy are not real reflectors, rather they are signal artifacts probably generated by the system and its electromagnetic interaction with the metallic rover. This paper investigated the sensitivity of passive microwave L-band soil moisture (SM) retrieval from multiangle airborne brightness temperature data obtained under morning and afternoon conditions from the National Airborne Field Experiment conducted in southeast Australia in 2006. Ground measurements at a dryland focus farm including soil texture, soil temperature, and vegetation water content were used as ancillary data to drive the retrieval model. The derived SM was then in turn evaluated with the ground-measured near-surface SM patterns. The results of this paper show that the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity target accuracy of 0.04 m3·m-3 for single-SM retrievals is achievable irrespective of the 6 A.M. and 6 P.M. overpass acquisition times for moisture conditions≥0.15 m3·m-3. Additional tests on the use of the air temperature as proxy for the vegetation temperature also showed no preference for the acquisition time. The performance of multiparameter retrievals of SM and an additional parameter proved to be satisfactory for SM modeling--independent of the acquisition time--with root-mean-square errors less than 0.06 m3·m-3 for the focus farm. The Terra and Aqua Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) scan mirror reflectance is a function of the angle of incidence (AOI) and was characterized prior to launch by the instrument vendor. The relative change of the prelaunch response versus scan angle (RVS) is tracked and linearly scaled on-orbit using observations at two AOIs of 11.2° and 50.2° corresponding to the moon view and solar diffuser, respectively. As the missions continue to operate well beyond their design life of six years, the assumption of linear scaling between the two AOIs is known to be inadequate in accurately characterizing the RVS, particularly at short wavelengths. Consequently, an enhanced approach of supplementing the on-board measurements with response trends from desert pseudoinvariant calibration sites (PICS) was formulated in MODIS Collection 6 (C6). An underlying assumption for the continued effectiveness of this approach is the long-term (multiyear) and short-term (month to month) stability of the PICS. Previous work has shown that the deep convective clouds (DCC) can also be used to monitor the onorbit RVS performance with less trend uncertainties compared with desert sites. In this paper, the raw sensor response to the DCC is used to characterize the on-orbit RVS on a band and mirror-side basis. These DCC-based RVS results are compared with those of C6 PICS-based RVS, showing an agreement within 2% observed in most cases. The pros and cons of using a DCC-based RVS approach are also discussed in this paper. Although this reaffirms the efficacy of the C6 PICS-based RVS, the DCC-based RVS approach presents itself as an effective alternative for future considerations. Potential applications of this approach to other instruments, such as Suomi National Polarorbiting Partnership, Joint Polar Satellite Systems, and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite, are also discussed. This paper introduces an extension of morphological attribute profiles (APs) by extracting their local features. The so-called local feature-based APs (LFAPs) are expected to provide a better characterization of each APs' filtered pixel (i.e., APs' sample) within its neighborhood, and hence better deal with local texture information from the image content. In this paper, LFAPs are constructed by extracting some simple first-order statistical features of the local patch around each APs' sample such as mean, standard deviation, and range. Then, the final feature vector characterizing each image pixel is formed by combining all local features extracted from APs of that pixel. In addition, since the self-dual APs (SDAPs) have been proved to outperform the APs in recent years, a similar process will be applied to form the local feature-based SDAPs (LFSDAPs). In order to evaluate the effectiveness of LFAPs and LFSDAPs, supervised classification using both the random forest and the support vector machine classifiers is performed on the very high resolution Reykjavik image as well as the hyperspectral Pavia University data. Experimental results show that LFAPs (respectively, LFSDAPs) can considerably improve the classification accuracy of the standard APs (respectively, SDAPs) and the recently proposed histogram-based APs. The concept of information fusion has gained a widespread interest in many fields due to its complementary properties. It makes systems more robust against uncertainty. This paper presents a new approach for the well-logging estimation problem by using a fusion methodology. The natural gammaray tool (NGT) is considered as an important instrument in the well logging. The NGT detects changes in natural radioactivity emerging from the variations in concentrations of micronutrients as uranium (U), thorium (Th), and potassium (K). The main goal of this paper is to have precise estimation of the concentrations of U, Th, and K. Four types of Kalman filters are designed to estimate the elements using the NGT sensor. Then, a fusion of the Kalman filters is utilized into an integrated framework by an ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator to enhance the quality of the estimations. A real covariance of the output error based on the innovation matrix is utilized to design weighting factors for the OWA operator. The simulation studies indicate not only a reliable performance of the proposed method compared with the individual Kalman filters but also a better response in contrast with previous fusion methodologies. Pansharpening usually refers to the fusion of a high spatial resolution panchromatic (PAN) image with a higher spectral resolution but coarser spatial resolution multispectral (MS) image. Owing to the wide applicability of related products, the literature has been populated by many papers proposing several approaches and studies about this issue. Many solutions require a preliminary spectral matching phase wherein the PAN image is matched with the MS bands. In this paper, we propose and properly justify a new approach for performing this step, demonstrating that it yields state-of-the-art performance. The comparison with existing spectral matching procedures is performed by employing four data sets, concerning different kinds of landscapes, acquired by the Pléiades, WorldView-2, and GeoEye-1 sensors. In this paper, the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) calibration for low-frequency missions by means of stable point targets is presented. Calibration at low frequency involves the absolute radiometric calibration, the antenna pattern and pointing characterization and validation, and the distortion system parameters' estimation. The use of traditional instrumentation, such as a polarimetric active radar calibrator, a corner reflector, or an active transponder, may be costly and can reduce the time the instrument is used for operational acquisitions. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the potentiality in calibration of point targets for which the radar cross section and the time stability have been characterized. Given a calibration site, once that a set of the stable point targets have been detected by the analysis of an interferometric stack of SAR acquisitions, they may be used as passive calibrators for the validation of radiometry, elevation antenna pattern, and pointing estimation. We show that, although less targets are expected to be found in P- or L- band than in C- or X-band, a sufficient amount (about 250 targets per acquisition) can provide an accuracy in antenna pattern estimation of about 0.04 dB, if the target accuracy is 0.1 dB at 1◝. This paper continues an overview of the validation of operational profile retrievals from the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (SNPP), with focus here given to the infrared (IR) ozone profile environmental data record (EDR) product. The SNPP IR ozone profile EDR is retrieved using the cross-track IR sounder (CrIS), a Fourier transform spectrometer that measures high-resolution IR earth radiance spectra containing atmospheric state information, namely, vertical profiles of temperature, moisture, and trace gas constituents. The SNPP CrIS serves as the U.S. low earth orbit (LEO) satellite IR sounding system and will be featured on future Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) LEO satellites. The operational sounding algorithm is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS), a legacy sounder science team algorithm that retrieves atmospheric profile EDR products, including ozone and carbon trace gases, with optimal vertical resolution under nonprecipitating (clear to partly cloudy) conditions. The NUCAPS ozone profile product is assessed in this paper using extensive global in situ truth data sets, namely, ozonesonde observations launched from ground-based networks and from ocean-based intensive field campaigns, along with numerical weather prediction model output. Based upon rigorous statistical analyses using these data sets, the NUCAPS ozone profile EDRs are determined to meet the JPSS Level 1 global performance requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The existing methods for motion compensation in inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging are generally limited to the low-order target motion model, and require iterative optimization with limited velocity estimate precision and heavy computational burdens. This paper proposes a high-precision method of phase-derived velocity measurement (PDVM) and applies it to motion compensation of ISAR imaging. The method applies PDVM based on range profiles cross correlation to the translational velocity estimation of targets, and converts the velocity measurement results to the corresponding range increment. The equivalent phase-derived range measurement precision can reach the order of magnitude of millimeter (mm) or even sub-mm, which can satisfy the precision requirements of both envelope alignment and phase adjustment. The key to realizing PDVM is resolving phase ambiguity. The traditional method for resolving ambiguity has very high requirements for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This work resolves ambiguity by combining multiframe data, i.e., by resolving ambiguity of multiframe data simultaneously instead of resolving ambiguity of single-frame data independently and correcting the above ambiguity-resolving results using a minimum-entropy method. Therefore, phase ambiguity can be correctly resolved under a relatively low SNR. Experimental results of an ISAR imaging of an airplane show that the method proposed in this paper can obtain high-quality ISAR imagery, and can efficiently realize robust imaging under the conditions of low SNR. Deep models with multiple layers have demonstrated their potential in learning abstract and invariant features for better representation and classification of remote sensing images. Moreover, metric learning (ML) is usually introduced into the deep models to further increase the discrimination of deep representations. However, the usual deep ML methods treat the training samples in each training batch in the stochastic gradient descent-based learning procedure independently, and thus, they neglect the important contextual (structural) information in the training samples. In this paper, we first introduce deep structural ML (DSML) into the literature of remote sensing scene classification and specifically capture and use the structural information during the training on the remote sensing images. Further analysis demonstrates that DSML usually makes many learned metric parameters similar. This similarity leads to obvious model redundancy and thus decreases the representational ability of the model. To address this problem, this paper proposes a new diversity-promoting DSML (D-DSML) method by regularizing the learning procedure by a diversity-promoting prior over the parameter factors. The proposed D-DSML encourages the parameter factors to be uncorrelated, such that each factor can model unique information, and thus, the model's description ability and classification performance would be significantly improved. Experiments over six real-world remote sensing scene data sets demonstrate that the proposed method obtains much better results than those obtained by the original deep models and has comparable or even better performances when compared with state-of-the-art methods. The assessment of satellite image classifications is usually carried out using a test sample assumed as the ground truth, from which a confusion matrix is derived. There are cases where the reference data, even those coming from a ground survey, are affected by errors and do not represent a reliable truth. In the field of geophysical parameter retrieval, the triple collocation (TC) technique is applied for validating remotely sensed products when the source of test data (e.g., ground data) does not represent a reliable reference. TC is able to retrieve the error variances of three systems observing the same target parameter, assuming that their errors are independent. In this paper, we exploit the same idea to test the classification accuracy in cases where the ground truth is not available. We extend the TC approach to the classification problem for a general number of classes, but we solve it numerically for a two-class problem (i.e., collapsed and noncollapsed buildings). The specific case refers to the detection of L'Aquila 2009 earthquake damage from very high-resolution optical data. The image classification, performed by exploiting an object-based analysis, is compared with those from two different ground surveys carried out after the earthquake by different teams and with different purposes. This paper demonstrates the power of the TC approach for assessing the classification accuracy with no reliable ground truth available, and provides an insight into the problem of assessing damage, from satellite and on ground, in a very critical and unsafe situation, like the one occurring after an earthquake. Supervised approaches classify input data using a set of representative samples for each class, known as training samples. The collection of such samples is expensive and time demanding. Hence, unsupervised feature learning, which has a quick access to arbitrary amounts of unlabeled data, is conceptually of high interest. In this paper, we propose a novel network architecture, fully Conv-Deconv network, for unsupervised spectral-spatial feature learning of hyperspectral images, which is able to be trained in an end-to-end manner. Specifically, our network is based on the so-called encoder-decoder paradigm, i.e., the input 3-D hyperspectral patch is first transformed into a typically lower dimensional space via a convolutional subnetwork (encoder), and then expanded to reproduce the initial data by a deconvolutional subnetwork (decoder). However, during the experiment, we found that such a network is not easy to be optimized. To address this problem, we refine the proposed network architecture by incorporating: 1) residual learning and 2) a new unpooling operation that can use memorized max-pooling indexes. Moreover, to understand the "black box," we make an in-depth study of the learned feature maps in the experimental analysis. A very interesting discovery is that some specific "neurons" in the first residual block of the proposed network own good description power for semantic visual patterns in the object level, which provide an opportunity to achieve "free" object detection. This paper, for the first time in the remote sensing community, proposes an end-to-end fully Conv-Deconv network for unsupervised spectral-spatial feature learning. Moreover, this paper also introduces an in-depth investigation of learned features. Experimental results on two widely used hyperspectral data, Indian Pines and Pavia University, demonstrate competitive performance obtained by the proposed methodology compared with other studied approaches. In this paper, with respect to multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR), we first formulate the problems of Doppler ambiguities on the radial velocity (RV) estimation of a ground moving target in the range-compressed domain, the range-Doppler domain, and the image domain, respectively. It is revealed that in these problems, the cascaded time-space Doppler ambiguity (CTSDA) may arise; that is, the time domain Doppler ambiguity in each channel arises first and then the spatial domain Doppler ambiguity among multichannels arises second. Accordingly, the multichannel SAR systems with different parameters are investigated in three cases with different Doppler ambiguity properties. Then, a multifrequency SAR is proposed for the RV estimation by solving the ambiguity problem based on the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). In the first two cases, the ambiguity problem can be solved by the existing closed-form robust CRT. In the third case, it is found that the problem is different from the conventional CRT problem and we call it a double remaindering problem in this paper. We then propose a sufficient condition under which the double remaindering problem, i.e., the CTSDA, can also be solved by the closed-form robust CRT. When the sufficient condition is not satisfied, a searching-based method is proposed. This paper presents the first experimental demonstration of the virtual bandwidth synthetic aperture radar (VB-SAR) imaging scheme. VB-SAR is a newly developed subsurface imaging technique which, in stark contrast to traditional close proximity ground penetrating radar schemes, promises imaging from remote standoff platforms such as aircraft and satellites. It specifically exploits the differential interferometric SAR (DInSAR) phase history of a radar wave within a drying soil volume to generate high-resolution vertical maps of the scattering through the soil volume. For this study, a stack of C-band vertically polarized DInSAR images of a sandy soil containing a buried target was collected in the laboratory while the soil moisture was varied--first during controlled water addition, and then during subsequent drying. The wetting image set established the moisture-phase relationship for the soil, which was then applied to the drying DInSAR image set using the VB-SAR scheme. This allowed retrieval of high-resolution VB-SAR imagery with a vertical discrimination of 0.04 m from a stack of 1-m vertical resolution DInSAR images. Forward-looking ground-penetrating radar (FLGPR) has recently been investigated as a remote-sensing modality for buried target detection (e.g., landmines). In this context, raw FLGPR data are beamformed into images, and then, computerized algorithms are applied to automatically detect subsurface buried targets. Most existing algorithms are supervised, meaning that they are trained to discriminate between labeled target and nontarget imagery, usually based on features extracted from the imagery. A large number of features have been proposed for this purpose; however, thus far it is unclear as to which are the most effective. The first goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive comparison of detection performance using existing features on a large collection of FLGPR data. Fusion of the decisions resulting from processing each feature is also considered. The second goal of this paper is to investigate two modern feature learning approaches from the object recognition literature: the bag-of-visual words and the Fisher vector for FLGPR processing. The results indicate that the new feature learning approaches lead to the best performing FLGPR algorithm. Surface ultraviolet (UV) observations can be obtained from satellite or ground observations. This paper uses one data fusion technique (similar to Kalman filter) to combine the advantages from both sources of observations, aiming at achieving a better estimate of surface UV. In this paper, new mathematical methods and algorithms were developed to estimate the error covariance and correlation region, which are the most important components in this data fusion technique. This technique was applied to the satellite data from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS)-Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) combined with ground measurements from UV-B Monitoring and Research Program (UVMRP) within the region of continental U.S. from 2005 to 2015. Numerical experiments showed that the technique is effective, and TOMS-OMI data were improved by combining UVMRP data. Polarimetric coherence, which has the potential to reveal physical properties of scatterers, is an important source for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data investigation. Target structure and orientation relative to the PolSAR illumination direction are key factors affecting the polarimetric coherence degree. The relative orientation between a sensor and a target can be adjusted using the rotating processing along the radar's line of sight. The main idea of this paper is to extend the traditional polarimetric coherence at a given rotation state (θ = 0) to the rotation domain (θ ∈ [-π, π)) along the radar's line of sight for hidden information exploration. A visualization and characterization tool named as a polarimetric coherence pattern for two arbitrary polarization channels is proposed and developed. This interpretation tool is able to view the variation of polarimetric coherence in the rotation domain containing rich orientation diversity information which is seldom considered. A set of characterization features are derived to completely describe a polarimetric coherence pattern thereafter. Experimental studies with unmanned aerial vehicle SAR (UAVSAR) PolSAR data over crop areas have validated that polarimetric coherence patterns vary in terms of polarization combinations and crop types. The proposed characterization features show good potential to differentiate polarimetric responses from different land covers. Furthermore, a classification scheme combining the selected proposed features and the commonly used roll-invariant features is developed for quantitative and application investigation. Comparison studies with both UAVSAR and Airborne SAR (AIRSAR) data clearly demonstrate the superiority of the proposed classification to the conventional classification with only roll-invariant features. The overall classification accuracies for the seven and eleven land covers of UAVSAR and AIRSAR data are, respectively, increased from 90.21% and 93.87% to 95.12% and 94.63% by the proposed classification scheme. Panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) imagery classification is one of the hottest topics in the field of remote sensing. In recent years, deep learning techniques have been widely applied in many areas of image processing. In this paper, an end-to-end learning framework based on deep multiple instance learning (DMIL) is proposed for MS and PAN images' classification using the joint spectral and spatial information based on feature fusion. There are two instances in the proposed framework: one instance is used to capture the spatial information of PAN and the other is used to describe the spectral information of MS. The features obtained by the two instances are concatenated directly, which can be treated as simple fusion features. To fully fuse the spatial-spectral information for further classification, the simple fusion features are fed into a fusion network with three fully connected layers to learn the high-level fusion features. Classification experiments carried out on four different airborne MS and PAN images indicate that the classifier provides feasible and efficient solution. It demonstrates that DMIL performs better than using a convolutional neural network and a stacked autoencoder network separately. In addition, this paper shows that the DMIL model can learn and fuse spectral and spatial information effectively, and has huge potential for MS and PAN imagery classification. Corner feature matching remains a difficult task for wide-baseline images because of viewpoint distortion, surface discontinuities, and partial occlusions. In this paper, we propose a robust Harris corner matching method based on the quasi-homography transform (QHT) and self-adaptive window. Our method is divided into three steps. First, high-quality Harris corners were extracted from stereo images using optimal detecting, and initial matches were simultaneously acquired by integrating complementary affine-invariant features and the scale-invariant feature transform descriptor. Second, the pair of fundamental matrices was estimated based on the initial matches and improved random sample consensus algorithm. Subsequently, the global QHT was produced by duplicate epipolar geometries. Third, conjugate Harris corners were obtained by combining QHT and normalized cross correlation, and the accuracy of the corresponding points was further improved based on self-adaptive least-squares matching (SALSM). Experiments on six groups of wide-baseline images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and a comprehensive comparison with the existing corner matching algorithms indicates that our method has notable superiority in terms of accuracy and distribution. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed global QHT can reduce the search range effectively for candidates, and the proposed SALSM can notably improve the accuracy of the corresponding corners. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification is a vital application in remote sensing image processing. In general, PolSAR image classification is actually a high-dimensional nonlinear mapping problem. The methods based on sparse representation and deep learning have shown a great potential for PolSAR image classification. Therefore, a novel PolSAR image classification method based on multilayer projective dictionary pair learning (MDPL) and sparse auto encoder (SAE) is proposed in this paper. First, MDPL is used to extract features, and the abstract degree of the extracted features is high. Second, in order to get the nonlinear relationship between elements of feature vectors in an adaptive way, SAE is also used in this paper. Three PolSAR images are used to test the effectiveness of our method. Compared with several state-of-the-art methods, our method achieves very competitive results in PolSAR image classification. In order to solve the accuracy problem caused by lens distortions of nonmetric digital cameras mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle, the estimation for initial values of lens distortion must be studied. Based on the fact that radial lens distortions are the most significant of lens distortions, a simple and efficient method for radial lens distortion estimation is proposed in this paper. Starting from the coplanar equation, the geometric characteristics of the relative orientation equations are explored. This paper further proves that the radial lens distortion can be linearly estimated in a continuous relative orientation model. The proposed procedure only requires a sufficient number of point correspondences between two or more images obtained by the same camera; thus it is suitable for a natural scene where the lack of straight lines and calibration objects precludes most previous techniques. This paper describes a new model of the seawater dielectric constant as a function of salinity and temperature at L-band. The model function is developed by fitting the accurate measurement data made at 1.413 GHz to a third-order polynomial. The purpose of this study is to provide an accurate model for earth-observing satellites to retrieve seawater salinities from remote sensing data. In this paper, the development of the model function is introduced along with an analysis of the goodness of fit. The model function is then compared with the model functions of Klein-Swift and Meissner-Wentz.
