Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods have been successfully applied to SAR target detection. Different from prevalently used detection approaches with rectangle bounding box, rotatable bounding box (RBox)-based methods, such as DRBox-v1, can effectively reduce the interference of background pixels and locate the targets more finely for geospatial object detection. Although DRBox-v1 has achieved impressive detected performance, there still exist some remaining problems and room for improvement. In this paper, an improved RBox-based target detection framework is proposed to boost precision and recall rates of detection, and we refer to the method as DRBox-v2 and apply it to target detection in SAR images. The main improvements of DRBox-v2 as well as the contributions of this paper are fourfold. First, a multi-layer prior box generation strategy is designed for detecting small-scale targets. Since shallow layers lack strong sematic information, the feature pyramid network (FPN) module is applied. Second, a modified encoding scheme for RBox is proposed for more precisely estimating the position of RBox and orientation of targets. Third, a focal loss (FL) combined with hard negative mining (HNM) technique is proposed to mitigate the issue of the imbalance between positive and negative samples, which produces better results than solely employing either one. Fourth, comprehensive ablation studies are conducted to reveal the effect of each improvement on detected results. The results of the target detection on three data sets are illustrated and our method obtains 0.135, 0.081, 0.115 gains in average precision compared with three state-of-the-art methods, respectively. This paper examines the attainable performance of various Doppler sublook or subband cross correlation techniques for vessel detection in synthetic aperture radar images. Research from the past two decades claims that these techniques were capable of improving the detection of small ships in challenging maritime environments. Despite many published experimental examples, a thorough analytical investigation corroborating this claim is noticeably absent. This paper is based on a rigorous theoretical analysis founded on the statistical properties of a textured sea surface model in thermal noise with simultaneous consideration of a constant false alarm rate. Emphasis has been placed on the correct accounting for detrimental physical effects caused by the Doppler spectrum being split into nonoverlapping parts, which have not been sufficiently considered in the literature to date. The theoretical results are confirmed via simulations and are substantiated with real RADARSAT-2 data. The analysis in this paper has neither found theoretical nor empirical evidence that sublook correlation techniques outperform the classical detector based on the image magnitude. In this paper, monitoring of metal-cased oil wells using the ultrawideband (UWB) radar is proposed. The inspection includes the detection and imaging of perforations and corroded areas in a metal pipe. Detection of small anomalies/ perforations on the surface of a narrow metal pipe is very challenging. Here, we present a method for imaging such small anomalies based on the extra time delay of the reflected pulse due to the effect of perforation in the radar near field. In this paper, the necessary concepts for the use of UWB radar specified for this application are developed and proved based on different measurement and simulation scenarios. We have experimentally demonstrated the effect of the perforations’ size on the time delay of reflected pulses. The distance between the perforation and the radar, for the near-field phenomenon, is critical for an effective detection and imaging. Therefore, we also studied the optimal distance between the radar and the perforation. Perforations with a size range of 1–3 cm are considered for the experiments and simulations. The experiments are done both in air and diesel. Synthetic aperture radar processing is used to reconstruct the images of the perforations and corroded area. In this paper, the authors investigate the statistical matching of the panchromatic (Pan) image to the multispectral (MS) bands, also known as the histogram matching, for the two main classes of pansharpening methods, i.e., those based on component substitution (CS) or spectral methods and those based on multiresolution analysis (MRA) or spatial methods. Also, hybrid methods combining CS with MRA, like the widespread additive wavelet luminance proportional (AWLP), are investigated. It is shown that all spectral, spatial, and hybrid methods must perform a dynamics matching of the enhancing Pan to the individual MS bands for MRA or a combination of them (the component that shall be substituted) for CS. For hybrid methods, the problem is more complex and both types of histogram matching may be suitable. Such an intersensor balance may be either explicit or implicitly performed by the detail-injection model, e.g., the popular projective and multiplicative injection models. An experimental setup exploiting IKONOS and WorldView-2 data sets demonstrates that a correct histogram matching is the key to attain extra performance from established methods. As a first result of this paper, the AWLP method has been revisited and its performance significantly improved by simply performing the histogram matching of Pan to the individual MS bands, rather than to the intensity component, thereby losing the original proportionality feature. Accurate and robust detection of multi-class objects in optical remote sensing images is essential to many real-world applications, such as urban planning, traffic control, searching, and rescuing. However, the state-of-the-art object detection techniques designed for images captured using ground-level sensors usually experience a sharp performance drop when directly applied to remote sensing images, largely due to the object appearance differences in remote sensing images in terms of sparse texture, low contrast, arbitrary orientations, and large-scale variations. This paper presents a novel object detection network [(context-aware detection network (CAD-Net)] that exploits attention-modulated features as well as global and local contexts to address the new challenges in detecting objects from remote sensing images. The proposed CAD-Net learns global and local contexts of objects by capturing their correlations with the global scene (at scene level) and the local neighboring objects or features (at object level), respectively. In addition, it designs a spatial-and-scale-aware attention module that guides the network to focus on more informative regions and features as well as more appropriate feature scales. Experiments over two publicly available object detection data sets for remote sensing images demonstrate that the proposed CAD-Net achieves superior detection performance. Anomalous change detection (ACD) is an important problem in remote sensing image processing. Detecting not only pervasive but also anomalous or extreme changes has many applications for which methodologies are available. This paper introduces a nonlinear extension of a full family of anomalous change detectors. In particular, we focus on algorithms that utilize Gaussian and elliptically contoured (EC) distribution and extend them to their nonlinear counterparts based on the theory of reproducing kernels’ Hilbert space. We illustrate the performance of the kernel methods introduced in both pervasive and ACD problems with real and simulated changes in multispectral and hyperspectral imagery with different resolutions (AVIRIS, Sentinel-2, WorldView-2, and Quickbird). A wide range of situations is studied in real examples, including droughts, wildfires, and urbanization. Excellent performance in terms of detection accuracy compared to linear formulations is achieved, resulting in improved detection accuracy and reduced false-alarm rates. Results also reveal that the EC assumption may be still valid in Hilbert spaces. First launched in 1972, the Landsat satellite sensors have provided the longest continuous record of high-quality images of the earth’s surface that are used in both civilian and military applications. The Landsat Multispectral Scanner System (MSS) sensor was onboard Landsat-1 through Landsat-5. In fact, the MSS sensors provide the only systematic global multispectral space-based imagery of the earth’s surface from 1972 to 1982. This paper focuses on the radiometric calibration update of the Landsats 1–5 MSS sensors. The radiometric calibration was performed in both radiance- and reflectance-based scales through the cross-calibration approach. Simultaneous or near-simultaneous image collections were available for MSS sensor pairs and used for the cross-calibration. The estimated uncertainties for this calibration update exhibit progressively decreasing calibration accuracy, ranging from 5.1% for MSS-5 to 8.8% for MSS-1 in the green spectral band, for example. Finally, the new radiometric calibration coefficients were validated through the use of pseudo-invariant calibration sites (PICS). The temporal Top of the Atmosphere (TOA) radiance and TOA reflectance over the Sonoran Desert were plotted with the purpose of verifying the lifetime radiometric stability of MSS sensors. With the previous calibration, the agreement between the measurements of TOA reflectance over the Sonoran Desert was around 7.5% for all spectral bands. With the calibration update implemented in this study, the agreement between MSS sensors is 3.6%, 2.9%, 3.5%, and 5.9% for the green, red, near-infrared response (NIR-1), and NIR-2 spectral bands, respectively. The AisaOWL is a recent-to-market thermal hyperspectral instrument. As such, there is little information about the sensor performance in the literature. The sensor covers the 7.6– 12.6~\mu \textm part of the long-wave infrared region with 102 continuous bands, and is capable of imaging in low-light conditions. This paper presents an independent characterization of the AisaOWL sensor, examining the spectral accuracy of black body measurements at different temperatures and validating manufacturer recommendations for warm-up, integration, and calibration times. This analysis is essential for establishing high quality operational procedures and in giving confidence to users of the data. In this paper, the sensor has been found to have a maximum error of 2 °C in absolute temperature measurement, and provides spectra most accurate in the 8– 9~\mu \textm region. The recommended warm-up time of 15 min has been confirmed, with a 1% increase in error identified for data collected only 7 min after switch on. The optimal integration time of 1.18 ms has been validated and an exponential decrease in performance observed outside the 0.85–1.2 ms range. The detector used by the sensor is shown to have stability issues and this has been examined by comparing black body data processed with different calibration data. While the detector is operating in a stable regime compatible with the calibration, these black body readings stay within 5% across the central bands, approaching 10% below 8~\mu \textm and just exceeding 20% above 11 \mu \textm . The Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) carries the Thermal and Near-Infrared Sensor for carbon Observations Fourier Transform Spectrometer (TANSO-FTS). TANSO-FTS covers a wide spectral range from the shortwave infrared to the thermal infrared (TIR). This paper describes the updated calibration algorithm of the TANSO-FTS Level 1B TIR spectra and the radiometric validation of the new V210.210 products by comparison with the previous version of V201.202. The revised nonlinearity correction for V210.210 product creates a decade-long, well-calibrated radiance set while minimizing the effect of two major anomalies: rotation stop of the one of the solar paddles in 2014 and a cryocooler shutdown in 2015, which caused abrupt changes in the thermal environment of the TANSO-FTS sensor. To check the improved nonlinearity correction and onboard calibration in TANSO-FTS V210.210 processing, we validated the entire spectral range by comparing with aircraft-based Scanning High-resolution Interferometer Sounder coincident in time with the GOSAT overpass. Also selected CO2 and CH4 channels are validated with the Atmospheric infrared sounder and the window channel with the in situ SST Quality Monitor data at temporally coincident and spatially collocated points. We have confirmed that the new V210.210 products exhibit no significant time trend in the window channel and a reduced spectral bias in the CO2 and CH4 channels. There remains some spectral bias, especially in the CO $_{2} \nu _{2}$ channel and CH4 channel, which are attributed to the uncertainty of orbital and seasonal variations in the average direct current level of TANSO-FTS without photon input. In this paper, we propose a novel sparsity-based algorithm for anomaly detection in hyperspectral imagery. The algorithm is based on the concept that a background pixel can be approximately represented as a sparse linear combination of its spatial neighbors while an anomaly pixel cannot if the anomalies are removed from its neighborhood. To be physically meaningful, the sum-to-one and nonnegativity constraints are imposed to abundance vector based on the linear mixture model, and the upper bound constraint on sparsity level is removed for better recovery of the test pixel. First, the proposed method utilizes the redundant background information to automatically remove anomalies from the background dictionary. Then, the reconstruction error obtained by the new background dictionary is directly used for anomaly detection. Moreover, a kernel version of the proposed method is also derived to completely exploit the nonlinear feature of hyperspectral data. An important advantage of the proposed methods is their capability to adaptively model the background even when some anomaly pixels are involved. Extensive experiments have been conducted on three real hyperspectral data sets. Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification, which aims to assign an accurate label for hyperspectral pixels, has drawn great interest in recent years. Although low-rank representation (LRR) has been used to classify HSI, its ability to segment each class from the whole HSI data has not been exploited fully yet. LRR has a good capacity to capture the underlying low-dimensional subspaces embedded in original data. However, there are still two drawbacks for LRR. First, the LRR does not consider the local geometric structure within data, which makes the local correlation among neighboring data easily ignored. Second, the representation obtained by solving LRR is not discriminative enough to separate different data. In this paper, a novel locality- and structure-regularized LRR (LSLRR) model is proposed for HSI classification. To overcome the above-mentioned limitations, we present locality constraint criterion and structure preserving strategy to improve the classical LRR. Specifically, we introduce a new distance metric, which combines both spatial and spectral features, to explore the local similarity of pixels. Thus, the global and local structures of HSI data can be exploited sufficiently. In addition, we propose a structural constraint to make the representation have a near-block-diagonal structure. This helps to determine the final classification labels directly. Extensive experiments have been conducted on three popular HSI data sets. The retrieval of land surface temperature (LST) from remote sensing techniques has been studied and validated during the past 40 years, leading to important improvements. Accurate LST values are currently obtained through measurements using medium resolution thermal infrared (TIR) sensors. However, the most recent review reports demonstrated that the future TIR LST products need to obtain reliable temperature values at a high spatial resolution (100 m or higher) to study temperature variations between different elements in a heterogeneous kilometric area. The launch of high-resolution TIR sensors in the near future requires studies of the temporal evolution and spatial heterogeneities of the elements in a mixed region. The present study analyzes the LST in a sub-kilometric highly heterogeneous area, combining the use of LST products from high-resolution TIR orbiting sensors with the LST maps created from a TIR camera onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The aim is to estimate the LST variability in a heterogeneous area containing different surfaces (roads, buildings, and grass), observed from different TIR sensors at different spatial resolutions, covering from the meter to the kilometer scales. Several results showed that variations in the LST up to 18 °C were identified with the UAV-TIR camera, and significant differences were also present in the LST products obtained from simultaneous overpasses of high-resolution satellite TIR sensors. A second objective of the study, due to the availability of the high-resolution LST fields, was to explore the thermal advection between different elements and determine if it correlates with the surface energy budget in the same area, thus indicating that this process is of importance for heterogeneous terrains at these scales. The Landsat program plays an important role in providing continuous long-term multispectral moderate resolution observations of the earth’s surface. There is an interest by the community to improve the temporal sampling in future generations of the sensors. One way to achieve higher sampling is to collect imagery with a wider swath. For future instruments using multilayer dielectric filters for band selection, this has the further implication that light may enter the filters on the detectors at a higher angle of incidence, which will shift the center wavelength of the spectral bandpasses. Through simulation of a forest environment this paper explored the impact of this effect on measured spectral radiance and the normalized vegetation difference index. The effect is quantified both for angles of incidence seen in the current Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager as well as for pushbroom designs with up to 13° off-axis imaging. The land surface reflectance data are indispensable to generate many other land products. Global land surface reflectance data have been routinely produced from remote sensing sensors aboard different satellite platforms. However, the original data, especially the daily data, suffer from a large number of spatial gaps, which result from atmospheric contamination and instrument deficiencies. This seriously limits their further applications. Many composite products with less spatial gaps have been generated to solve the above problem, but they easily sacrifice their temporal resolutions of original data. Even worse, they cannot be directly implemented in realistic applications because of the noise and composite seams. This paper proposes a temporal–spatial reconstruction method (TSRM) to generate daily gapless and seamless land surface reflectance data. The TSRM integrates both temporal and spatial information for recovering different land cover types using three processing steps. First, spatial gaps are coarsely filled with multiyear weighted average (Step1). After that, all the gaps that are not filled in the first step are interpolated by using harmonic analysis of time series with true value constraint (Step2). Finally, the reconstructed results in the last step are seamlessly processed using the Poisson image editing method, and the seamless daily reflectance data set is generated (Step3). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer reflectance data set (MOD09GA and MYD09GA) on two testing areas is selected to verify the performance of the proposed TSRM. Experimental results show that the TSRM has good performance with regard to maintaining the temporal and spatial integrity of the daily land surface reflectance data. Because of the internal malfunction of satellite sensors and poor atmospheric conditions such as thick cloud, the acquired remote sensing data often suffer from missing information, i.e., the data usability is greatly reduced. In this paper, a novel method of missing information reconstruction in remote sensing images is proposed. The unified spatial–temporal–spectral framework based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) employs a unified deep CNN combined with spatial–temporal–spectral supplementary information. In addition, to address the fact that most methods can only deal with a single missing information reconstruction task, the proposed approach can solve three typical missing information reconstruction tasks: 1) dead lines in Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer band 6; 2) the Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus scan line corrector-off problem; and 3) thick cloud removal. It should be noted that the proposed model can use multisource data (spatial, spectral, and temporal) as the input of the unified framework. The results of both simulated and real-data experiments demonstrate that the proposed model exhibits high effectiveness in the three missing information reconstruction tasks listed above. This paper investigates at the example of bathymetry how much an application can profit from comprehensive characterizations required for an improved calibration of data from a state-of-the-art commercial hyperspectral sensor. A NEO HySpex VNIR-1600 sensor is used for this paper, and the improvements are based on measurements of sensor properties not covered by the manufacturer, in particular, detector nonlinearity and stray light. This additional knowledge about the instrument is used to implement corrections for nonlinearity, stray light, spectral smile distortion and nonuniform spectral bandwidth and to base the radiometric calibration on a SI-traceable radiance standard. Bathymetry is retrieved from a data take from the lake Starnberg using WASI-2D. The results using the original and improved calibration procedures are compared with ground reference data, with an emphasis on the effect of stray-light correction. For our instrument, stray-light biases the detector response from 416–500 nm up to 8% and from 700–760 nm up to 5%. Stray-light-induced errors affect bathymetry mainly in water deeper than Secchi depth, whereas in shallower water, the dominant error source is the calibration accuracy of the light source used for radiometric calibration. Stray-light correction reduced the systematic error of water depth by 19% from Secchi depth to three times Secchi depth, whereas the relative standard deviation remained stable at 5%. The validation of in-orbit instrument performance requires both stability in calibration source and also calibration corrections to compensate for instrument changes. Unlike internal calibrations, the Moon offers an external source whose signal variance is predictable and nondegrading. This paper describes a method of validation using lunar observations scanning near full moon by the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) Flight Model (FM)-1 and FM-2 aboard the Terra satellite, FM-3 and FM-4 aboard the Aqua satellite, and, as of 2012, FM-5 aboard Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership. Given the stability of the source, adjustments within the data set are based entirely on removing orbital effects. Lunar observations were found to require a consistent data set spanning at least two to three years in length to examine instrument stability due to the final step when lunar libration effects are addressed. Initial results show a 20% annual variability in the data set. Using this method, however, results show trends per data channel of 1.0% per decade or less for FM-1 through FM-4. This paper develops several new strategies for remote sensing image classification postprocessing (CPP) and conducts a systematic study in this area. CPP is defined as a refinement of the labeling in a classified image in order to enhance its original classification accuracy. The current mainstream classification methods (preprocessing) extract additional spatial features in order to complement spectral information and enhance classification using spectral responses alone. On the other hand, however, the CPP methods, providing a new solution to improve classification accuracy by refining the initial result, have not received sufficient attention. They have potential for achieving comparable accuracy to the preprocessing methods but in a more direct and succinct way. In this paper, we consider four groups of CPP strategies: filtering; random field; object-based voting; and relearning. In addition to the state-of-the-art CPP algorithms, we also propose a series of new ones, e.g., anisotropic probability diffusion and primitive cooccurrence matrix. In experiments, a number of multisource remote sensing data sets are used for evaluation of the considered CPP algorithms. It is shown that all the CPP strategies are capable of providing more accurate results than the raw classification. Among them, the relearning approaches achieve the best results. In addition, our relearning algorithms are compared with the state-of-the-art spectral-spatial classification. The implementation of the Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) mission was recommended by the National Research Council in 2007 to provide an on-orbit intercalibration standard with accuracy of 0.3% (k = 2) for relevant Earth observing sensors. The goal of reference intercalibration, as established in the Decadal Survey, is to enable rigorous high-accuracy observations of critical climate change parameters, including reflected broadband radiation [Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES)], cloud properties [Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS)], and changes in surface albedo, including snow and ice albedo feedback. In this paper, we describe the CLARREO approach for performing intercalibration on orbit in the reflected solar (RS) wavelength domain. It is based on providing highly accurate spectral reflectance and reflected radiance measurements from the CLARREO Reflected Solar Spectrometer (RSS) to establish an on-orbit reference for existing sensors, namely, CERES and VIIRS on Joint Polar Satellite System satellites, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer and follow-on imagers on MetOp, Landsat imagers, and imagers on geostationary platforms. One of two fundamental CLARREO mission goals is to provide sufficient sampling of high-accuracy observations that are matched in time, space, and viewing angles with measurements made by existing instruments, to a degree that overcomes the random error sources from imperfect data matching and instrument noise. The data matching is achieved through CLARREO RSS pointing operations on orbit that align its line of sight with the intercalibrated sensor. These operations must be planned in advance; therefore, intercalibration events must be predicted by orbital modeling. If two competing opportunities are identified, one target sensor must be given priority over the other. The intercalibration method is to monitor changes in targeted sensor response function parameters: effective offset, gain, nonlinearity, optics spectral response, and sensitivity to polarization. In this paper, we use existing satellite data and orbital simulation methods to determine mission requirements for CLARREO, its instrument pointing ability, methodology, and needed intercalibration sampling and data matching for accurate intercalibration of RS radiation sensors on orbit. We conclude that with the CLARREO RSS in a polar 90° inclination orbit at a 609-km altitude, estimated intercalibration sampling will limit the uncertainty contribution from data matching noise to 0.3% (k = 2) over the climate autocorrelation time period. This paper presents an application of data-driven Dempster-Shafer theory (DST) of evidence to fuse multisensor data for land-cover feature extraction. Over the years, researchers have focused on DST for a variety of applications. However, less attention has been given to generate and interpret probability, certainty, and conflict maps. Moreover, quantitative assessment of DST performance is often overlooked. In this paper, for implementation of DST, two main types of data were used: multisensor data such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and multispectral satellite imagery [Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre 5 (SPOT 5)]. The objectives are to classify land-cover types from fused multisensor data using DST, to quantitatively assess the accuracy of the classification, and to examine the potential of slope data derived from LiDAR for feature detection. First, we derived the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from SPOT 5 image and the normalized digital surface model (DSM) (nDSM) from LiDAR by subtracting the digital terrain model from the DSM. The two products were fused using the DST algorithm, and the accuracy of the classification was assessed. Second, we generated a surface slope from LiDAR and fused it with NDVI. Subsequently, the classification accuracy was assessed using an IKONOS image of the study area as ground truth data. From the two processing stages, the NDVI/nDSM fusion had an overall accuracy of 88.7%, while the NDVI/slope fusion had 75.3%. The result indicates that NDVI/nDSM integration performed better than NDVI/slope. Although the overall accuracy of the former is better than the latter (NDVI/slope), the contribution of individual class reveals that building extraction from fused slope and NDVI performed poorly. This study proves that DST is a time- and cost-effective method for accurate land-cover feature identification and extraction without the need for a prior knowledge of the scene. Many hyperspectral anomaly detectors are designed based on the traditional Mahalanobis distance-based RX algorithm, which is usually considered as an inverse operation of the principal components analysis. Such detectors include the uniform target detector (UTD) algorithm, RX-UTD algorithm, and so on. However, the possibility of background statistical contamination caused by anomalies still exists. In order to alleviate this problem, in this paper, we propose a spectral matched filter (background-anomaly component projection and separation optimized filter) to minimize the average output energy of separate image components and the output values of the weighted background regular term for hyperspectral image anomaly detection, which could strengthen the separation between anomalies and backgrounds. By calculating the optimal solution to the background-anomaly component projection and separation function, we obtain the optimal projection, where we can effectively suppress the background while highlighting the anomalies. Proposed algorithm has the following research advantages: 1) it creates a novel collaborative component projection and robust background optimization function to separate the background and anomalies and 2) it analyzes the intrinsic statistical distribution of pixels and applies appropriate iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm to solve the $\ell _{1}$ -min problem. Remotely sensed images may contain some missing areas because of poor weather conditions and sensor failure. Information of those areas may play an important role in the interpretation of multitemporal remotely sensed data. This paper aims at reconstructing the missing information by a nonlocal low-rank tensor completion method. First, nonlocal correlations in the spatial domain are taken into account by searching and grouping similar image patches in a large search window. Then, low rankness of the identified fourth-order tensor groups is promoted to consider their correlations in spatial, spectral, and temporal domains, while reconstructing the underlying patterns. Experimental results on simulated and real data demonstrate that the proposed method is effective both qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, the proposed method is computationally efficient compared with other patch-based methods such as the recently proposed patch matching-based multitemporal group sparse representation method. Arising from various environmental and atmos- pheric conditions and sensor interference, spectral variations are inevitable during hyperspectral remote sensing, which degrade the subsequent hyperspectral image analysis significantly. In this paper, we propose simultaneous spatial and spectral low-rank representation (S3LRR) that can effectively suppress the within-class spectral variations for classification purposes. The S3LRR recovers an intrinsic component with the same dimension as the original image, in which both spatial and spectral low-rank priors are adopted to regularize the intrinsic component simultaneously and compensate to each other, together with robust modeling of spectral variations. Compared with existing methods that explore only the spectral low-rank prior, the novel spatial low-rank prior (i.e., low-rank prior in band-wise) can take the spatial structure information of hyperspectral images into account, which has demonstrated to be very useful. Technically, we formulate S3LRR as a constrained convex optimization problem, and solve it using the efficient inexact augmented Lagrangian multiplier method. The resulting intrinsic component is less interfered by within-class spectral variations, and more discriminatory to offer higher classification accuracy. Comprehensive experiments on benchmark data sets demonstrate that the proposed S3LRR improves classification accuracy significantly, which outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Operational retrievals of aerosol optical depth (AOD) from Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) data have been shown to have a high bias in pristine oceanic areas. One line of evidence involves comparison with Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN) observations, including the areas of low aerosol loading close to Antarctica. In this paper, a principal reason for the AOD overestimation is identified, which is stray light measured by the MISR cameras in dark regions of high-contrast scenes. A small fraction of the light from surrounding bright areas, such as clouds or sea ice, is redistributed to dark areas, artificially increasing their brightness. Internal reflections and light scattering from optical elements in MISR's pushbroom cameras contribute to this veiling light effect. A simple correction model is developed that relies on the average scene brightness and an empirically determined set of veiling light coefficients for each MISR camera and wavelength. Several independent methods are employed to determine these coefficients. Three sets of coefficients are further implemented and tested in prototype MISR 4.4-km AOD retrievals. The results show dramatic improvements in retrieved AODs compared against MAN observations and the currently operational V22 MISR retrievals. For the best performing set of coefficients, the bias is reduced by 51%, from 0.039 to 0.019, the RMSE is lowered by 19%, from 0.062 to 0.050, and 84% of retrievals fall within the uncertainty envelope compared with 66% of retrievals in V22. The capabilities of bistatic radar observations to estimate the wind field over the ocean are investigated in this paper. The work is based on the analysis of simulated data obtained through a well-established electromagnetic model, which accounts for the anisotropy of the ocean's spectrum and of second-order effects of the scattering phenomenon. Both co-polarized and cross-polarized C-band numerical data, obtained considering monostatic and bistatic configurations, are exploited to investigate on the existence of optimal configurations able to minimize the wind vector error estimation. To this aim, the sensitivities of the bistatic normalized radar cross section with respect to both wind speed and direction are accurately investigated and exploited to evaluate the minimum achievable error standard deviation of the estimation. Small and large baselines are analyzed, giving particular emphasis to bistatic geometries constituted by one or two passive receivers aligned along the track defined by the active system. This investigation, originally performed in the framework of the SAOCOM-CS scientific satellite mission, is conceived to accurately assess the potentiality of bistatic observations of the ocean over variable baselines and to gather valuable information for the design of future bistatic satellite missions. The commonly applied K-distribution to model the synthetic aperture radar image amplitude of the heterogeneous (non-Gaussian) sea surface as the basis for vessel detection has shown deficiencies in practical cases, particularly for spacebased systems. Due to a deviation between the K-probability density function and measured histograms in the tails, even the inclusion of thermal noise is oftentimes not sufficient to cover the range of environments that are expected. As a consequence, virtually all detectors try to reduce the large number of obtained false detections by relying on rather heuristic postprocessing steps. Consequently, they forfeit the crucial property of a constant false alarm rate. This paper proposes a novel statistical sea clutter model that describes the data more accurately, especially in challenging environments and thermal-noise limited cases. This new model stands out through its numerical simplicity, permitting efficient parameter adaptation thereby enhancing robustness and reducing computational complexity. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) reflective solar bands (RSBs) are calibrated on-orbit using a solar diffuser (SD) with its degradation tracked by an onboard SD stability monitor (SDSM). The SDSM has nine detectors with wavelengths from 0.41 to 0.94 \mu \textm . It is operated during each scheduled SD calibration event, making alternate observations of the sun and the SD. Due to erroneous design parameters, which led to the misalignment of the key elements in the SDSM, there are significant ripples in the sun view responses as the solar viewing angle changes. At the mission beginning, the effect of the ripples was eliminated by normalizing each SDSM detector response to the response of detector 9 (D9) at 0.94 \mu \textm , assuming that D9 had no degradation. However, D9 degradation increases over MODIS operation times. Degradation of up to 2% has recently been observed in D9 for the Terra MODIS. A newly implemented approach reduces the sun view ripples using a lookup table constructed using SDSM data carefully selected from a short period early in the mission lifetime. In this paper, we provide an overview of different approaches that have been applied over the years by the MODIS Characterization Support Team to track the on-orbit SD degradation. Hyperspectral image classification faces various levels of difficulty due to the use of different types of hyperspectral image data. Recently, spectral–spatial approaches have been developed by jointly taking care of spectral and spatial information. This paper presents a completely different approach from a subpixel target detection view point. It implements four stage processes, a preprocessing stage, which uses band selection (BS) and nonlinear band expansion, referred to as BS-then-nonlinear expansion (BSNE), a detection stage, which implements constrained energy minimization (CEM) to produce subpixel target maps, and an iterative stage, which develops an iterative CEM (ICEM) by applying Gaussian filters to capture spatial information, and then feeding the Gaussian-filtered CEM-detection maps back to BSNE band images to reprocess CEM in an iterative manner. Finally, in the last stage Otsu’s method is applied to converting ICEM-detected real-valued maps to discrete values for classification. The entire process is called BSNE-ICEM. Experimental results demonstrate BSNE-ICEM, which has advantages over support vector machine-based approaches in many aspects, such as easy implementation, fewer parameters to be used, and better false classification and precision rates. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in along-track interferometry (ATI) mode has been extensively applied in velocity measurements of ocean currents and ship detection. A notch filter was recently proposed and was demonstrated to be a promising tool for ship detection exploiting quad- or dual-polarization SAR information. In this paper, the investigation of the notch filter is extended to the dual-channel ATI-SAR mechanism for ship detection on the ocean surface. First, a theoretical proof that the interferometric magnitude performs better in ship detection than single-channel amplitude/intensity is given based on the signal-clutter-ratio improvement, which validates the advantages of interferometric SAR against conventional single-channel SAR for the purpose of ship observations on the ocean surface. Second, based on the proof, the version of the notch filter that is suitable for the ATI-SAR, that is, the interferometric notch filter (INF), is proposed. We then analyze the statistical models of the INF distance, which can facilitate the adaptive realization of INF for ship detection in ATI-SAR. Finally, the experimental results for dual-channel ATI-SAR data measured by NASA/JPL L-band AIRSAR verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and effectiveness of the INF. The tradeoff in remote sensing instruments that balances the spatial resolution and temporal frequency limits our capacity to monitor spatial and temporal dynamics effectively. The spatiotemporal data fusion technique is considered as a cost-effective way to obtain remote sensing data with both high spatial resolution and high temporal frequency, by blending observations from multiple sensors with different advantages or characteristics. In this paper, we develop the spatial and temporal nonlocal filter-based fusion model (STNLFFM) to enhance the prediction capacity and accuracy, especially for complex changed landscapes. The STNLFFM method provides a new transformation relationship between the fine-resolution reflectance images acquired from the same sensor at different dates with the help of coarse-resolution reflectance data, and makes full use of the high degree of spatiotemporal redundancy in the remote sensing image sequence to produce the final prediction. The proposed method was tested over both the Coleambally Irrigation Area study site and the Lower Gwydir Catchment study site. In this paper, we present a domain adaptation network to deal with classification scenarios subjected to the data shift problem (i.e., labeled and unlabeled images acquired with different sensors and over completely different geographical areas). We rely on the power of pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to generate an initial feature representation of the labeled and unlabeled images under analysis, referred as source and target domains, respectively. Then we feed the resulting features to an extra network placed on the top of the pretrained CNN for further learning. During the fine-tuning phase, we learn the weights of this network by jointly minimizing three regularization terms, which are: 1) the cross-entropy error on the labeled source data; 2) the maximum mean discrepancy between the source and target data distributions; and 3) the geometrical structure of the target data. Furthermore, to obtain robust hidden representations we propose a mini-batch gradient-based optimization method with a dynamic sample size for the local alignment of the source and target distributions. To validate the method, in the experiments we use the University of California Merced data set and a new multisensor data set acquired over several regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The experiments show that: 1) pretrained CNNs offer an interesting solution for image classification compared to state-of-the-art methods; 2) their performances can be degraded when dealing with data sets subjected to the data shift problem; and 3) how the proposed approach represents a promising solution for effectively handling this issue. In this paper, we propose a novel superpixel-based intrinsic image decomposition (SIID) framework for hyperspectral images. Intrinsic images are usually referred to the separation of shading and reflectance components from an input image. Considering the high dimensionality of hyperspectral images, we further decompose the shading component into the product of environment illumination and surface orientation changes, thus modeling the problem more properly. The proposed method consists of the following steps. First, we build two superpixel segmentation maps of different scales, i.e., a finer one that is oversegmented and a coarser one that is undersegmented. Based on the observation that the finer superpixel map achieves a higher segmentation accuracy, whereas the coarser superpixel map tends to reserve the objectness of the original image, we model the SIID decomposition problem in a matrix form based on the finer superpixel map and define a constraint matrix by integrating the information in the coarser superpixel map. The constraint matrix is introduced as a secondary constraint in order to make the ill-posed IID problem solvable. Finally, we transform the original decomposition problem into minimizing the Frobenius norm of the proposed matrix energy function and iteratively derive the solution. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is able to achieve a performance outperforming the state-of-the-art while making a great improvement in efficiency. Leaf area index (LAI), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and surface broadband albedo are three routinely generated land-surface parameters from satellite observations, which have been widely used in land-surface modeling and environmental monitoring. Currently, most global land products are retrieved separately from individual satellite data. Many issues, such as data gaps, spatial and temporal inconsistencies, and insufficient accuracy under certain conditions resulting from the inadequacies of single-sensor observations, have made the incorporation of multiple sensors a reasonable solution. In this paper, an approach to simultaneous estimation of LAI, broadband albedo, and FAPAR from multiple-satellite sensors is further refined. The method, improved from that proposed in an earlier study using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, consists of several steps. First, a coupled dynamic and radiative-transfer model based on MODIS, SPOT/VEGETATION, and Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer data was developed to retrieve LAI values and use them to construct a time-evolving dynamic model. Second, an iteration process with predefined exit criteria was developed to obtain consistent gap-filled LAI estimates. Third, a spectral albedo based on the retrieved LAI values was simulated using a radiative-transfer model and then converted to a broadband albedo using empirical methods. Snow-covered pixels identified by normalized difference snow index thresholds were adjusted to the weighted average of the underlying albedo and the maximum snow albedo. Finally, the FAPAR of green vegetation was calculated as a combination of the albedo at the top of the canopy, the soil albedo, and the transmittance of the PAR down to the background. Validation of retrieved LAI, albedo, and FAPAR values obtained from multiple-satellite data over ten study sites has demonstrated that the proposed method can produce more accurate products than presently distributed global products. The high-contrast edge of the Moon has been used for the on-orbit measurement of the modulation transfer function (MTF) of remote sensing instruments with a lunar observation capability. With the lunar edge as a target, the classical edge method is applied to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra and Aqua satellites. One of the major difficulties encountered during the calculation is that the spatial resolution of MODIS is too coarse to capture the fine structure of the edge spread function (ESF), which is required to calculate the MTF. To produce the MODIS ESF in high resolution, lunar images of a selected edge acquired by multiple instrument scans need to be superposed by aligning the edge positions accurately. In this paper, an algorithm is developed to perform the alignment, based on the lunar position data generated by the MODIS geolocation algorithm and recorded scan by scan. The positions of the lunar edges at the focal plane are calculated scan by scan, allowing the construction of a high-quality ESF for MTF derivation. The algorithm is applied to all MODIS bands with 250-m, 500-m, and 1-km spatial resolutions in both along-scan and along-track directions. The along-track MTF results are particularly valuable because the onboard SpectroRadiometric Calibration Assembly can only monitor the along-scan MTF. The trending results show that the along-track MTF of MODIS has been stable throughout the MODIS lifetime and is well above the design specification for all bands. There is an increased interest in detecting and estimating the amount of falling snow reaching the Earth's surface in order to fully capture the global atmospheric water cycle. An initial step toward global spaceborne falling snow algorithms for current and future missions includes determining the thresholds of detection for various active and passive sensor channel configurations and falling snow events over land surfaces and lakes. In this paper, cloud resolving model simulations of lake effect and synoptic snow events were used to determine the minimum amount of snow (threshold) that could be detected by the following instruments: the W-band radar of CloudSat, Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) Ku- and Ka-bands, and the GPM Microwave Imager. Eleven different nonspherical snowflake shapes were used in the analysis. Notable results include the following: 1) The W-band radar has detection thresholds more than an order of magnitude lower than the future GPM radars; 2) the cloud structure macrophysics influences the thresholds of detection for passive channels (e.g., snow events with larger ice water paths and thicker clouds are easier to detect); 3) the snowflake microphysics (mainly shape and density) plays a large role in the detection threshold for active and passive instruments; 4) with reasonable assumptions, the passive 166-GHz channel has detection threshold values comparable to those of the GPM DPR Ku- and Ka-band radars with \sim\! 0.05\ \g\cdot\m^-3 detected at the surface, or an \sim\! 0.5-1.0\-\mm\cdot \h^-1 melted snow rate. The present paper describes the cross calibration of the Remote Sensing Instrument (RSI) onboard Formosat-2 using the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) onboard Terra as a reference, which has been continuously calibrated by means of the onboard and vicarious calibration methods. The data integration system for multi-satellite sensor databases on the Global Earth Observation Grid (GEO Grid) is used in order to find pairs of images acquired by both satellite optical sensors over the radiometric calibration sites on the same days. Radiative transfer simulations that consider different imaging conditions using the Second Simulation of a Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) code are performed based on the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) atmosphere and land products, and the optimum methodology for this cross calibration is discussed under the assumption of no ground-based measurements. The derived calibration coefficients are normalized by the values of preflight calibration and are compared with the results of in-flight cross calibration by the Centre National d'Études Spatiales (CNES) and vicarious calibration described in our previous paper. The average degradations of sensor sensitivity since preflight calibration until 2009 are estimated to be 10% (Band2), 11% (Band3), and 8% (Band4). The derived long-term degradation trends are almost consistent with the results of our vicarious calibration within the precision. Remote sensing satellite sensors feature a tradeoff between the spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions. In this paper, we propose an integrated framework for the spatio–temporal–spectral fusion of remote sensing images. There are two main advantages of the proposed integrated fusion framework: it can accomplish different kinds of fusion tasks, such as multiview spatial fusion, spatio–spectral fusion, and spatio–temporal fusion, based on a single unified model, and it can achieve the integrated fusion of multisource observations to obtain high spatio–temporal–spectral resolution images, without limitations on the number of remote sensing sensors. The proposed integrated fusion framework was comprehensively tested and verified in a variety of image fusion experiments. In the experiments, a number of different remote sensing satellites were utilized, including IKONOS, the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the Hyperspectral Digital Imagery Collection Experiment (HYDICE), and Système Pour l' Observation de la Terre-5 (SPOT-5). With the increase of multisource data available from remote sensing platforms, it is demanding to develop unsupervised techniques for change detection from multisource data. The difference in imaging mechanism makes it difficult to carry out a direct comparison between multisource data in original observation spaces. Different sensors provide different descriptions on the same truth in low-dimension observation spaces, but the same truth indicates the comparability of multisource data in some high-dimensional feature spaces. Inspired by this, we try to solve this problem by transforming multisource data into a common high-dimension feature space. In this paper, an iterative coupled dictionary learning (CDL) model is proposed for multisource image change detection. This model aims to establish a pair of coupled dictionaries, one of which is responsible for the data from one sensor, whereas the other is responsible for the data from another sensor. The atoms from these two coupled dictionaries have a one-to-one correspondence at the same location. Such a property guarantees the transferability of the reconstruction coefficients between bitemporal patch pairs and provides us a desired mechanism to bridge multisource data and highlight changes. The contributions can be summarized as follows: CDL is designed to explore the intrinsic difference of multisource data for change detection in a high-dimension feature space, and an iterative scheme for unsupervised sample selection is proposed to keep the purity of training samples and gradually optimize the current coupled dictionaries. This paper describes use of Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) C-band scatterometer data for determination of the sea ice edge. The variation in backscatter with measurement geometry is different for the sea ice surface compared to the open water surface. Utilizing the ASCAT antenna configuration with three different look angles for the same surface spot, a new ASCAT sea ice parameter has been defined. One year of ASCAT measurements has been collocated with background sea ice information to derive probability distributions for the ASCAT sea ice parameter given the known ice condition. The result can be used in an inverse methodology, a Bayesian approach, to calculate the probability of sea ice from the ASCAT measurements. The method has been tested for a full year and validated against high-resolution satellite images and ice charts from an operational Ice Service. It reveals a realistic ice edge result, however, with weather-induced noise problems in terms of “false sea ice.” For automatic ice edge detection, ancillary information is needed to remove this noise. The paper shows how the method also can be used for ice edge detection with passive microwave data from SSM/I, and how it can be extended to utilize ASCAT together with SSM/I in a multisensor approach. The retrieval of aerosol properties from spaceborne sensors requires highly accurate and precise radiometric measurements, thus placing stringent requirements on sensor calibration and characterization. For the Terra/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the characteristics of the detectors of certain bands, particularly band 8 [(B8); 412 nm], have changed significantly over time, leading to increased calibration uncertainty. In this paper, we explore a possibility of utilizing a cross calibration method developed for characterizing the Terra/ MODIS detectors in the ocean bands by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ocean Biology Processing Group to improve aerosol retrieval over bright land surfaces. We found that the Terra/MODIS B8 reflectance corrected using the cross calibration method resulted in significant improvements for the retrieved aerosol optical thickness when compared with that from the Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer, Aqua/MODIS, and the Aerosol Robotic Network. With the continuing increase in the number of images collected everyday from different sensors, the automated registration of multisensor/multispectral images has become a very important issue. This is particularly true when pre- and postevent image comparison is concerned: For this particular application, the requirement of obtaining the earliest possible postevent image imposes the use of data potentially possessing significantly different characteristics with respect to the pre-event image. Strongly inhomogeneous image pairs require robust automatic registration techniques, preferably based on resolutionindependent feature-based registration. In a previous paper, we proposed a mode-based feature-matching scheme mutated from the computer vision domain and adapted to pre- and postevent feature matching. Some of the weak points highlighted in that first version are addressed in this paper, where a new version of the method is proposed, which exploits a new piece of information, i.e., the adjacency between feature points, generally preserved across the disaster event. The combination of frequency-modulation continuous-wave (FMCW) technology and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) promises a lightweight, cost-effective, and high-quality imaging sensor for remote sensing. However, the long signal duration time leads to the failure of the conventional start/stop approximation of the pulsed SAR. In this paper, a signal model is proposed to address the effects of the continuous motion during the transmit time on the echoed signal. Based on the model, an analytical point target reference spectrum is derived. From the spectrum, it will be seen that the continuous motion introduces an additional range-azimuth coupling term and a range walk term compared with the conventional pulsed SAR. The range walk term is well known, whereas the foregoing range-azimuth coupling term is formulated for the first time in the FMCW SAR community. For the squint and spotlight modes, these range walk and range-azimuth coupling terms might significantly degrade the image quality. In this paper, based on the proposed analytical signal model, we further discuss the application of the wavenumber domain algorithm for the FMCW SAR data. In addition, different approximations of the Stolt mapping are made to highlight the effect of the range-dependent higher-order range-azimuth coupling terms on the 2-D impulse responses. This paper presents an in-depth investigation of the error properties of two high-resolution global-scale satellite rain retrievals verified against rainfall fields derived from a moderate-resolution rain-gauge network (25-30-km intergage distances) covering a region in the midwestern U.S. (Oklahoma Mesonet). Evaluated satellite retrievals include the NASA Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission multisatellite precipitation analysis and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center morphing technique. The two satellite products are contrasted against a rain-gauge-adjusted radar rainfall product from the WSR-88D network in continental U.S. This paper presents an error characterization of the Mesonet rainfall fields based on an independent small-scale, but very dense (100-m intergage distances), rain-gauge network (named Micronet). The Mesonet error analysis, although significantly lower than the corresponding error statistics derived for the satellite and radar products, demonstrates the need to benchmark reference data sources prior to their quantitative use in validating remote sensing retrievals. In terms of the remote sensing rainfall products, this paper provides quantitative comparisons between the two satellite estimates and the most definitive rain-gauge-adjusted radar rainfall estimates at corresponding spatial and temporal resolutions (25 km and 3 hourly). Error quantification presented herein includes zero- (rain detection probability and false alarm), first- (bias ratio), and second-order (root mean square error and correlation) statistics as well as an evaluation of the spatial structure of error at warm and cold seasons of 2004 and 2006. There is no doubt that retrieving observed scene features is one of the most interesting and challenging activities in all fields of remote sensing: The successful extraction of scene parameters may not only mean the success of the adopted procedure but also the success of a prediction model, an image product, a sensor project, or even an entire mission. This paper is partly concerned with this. The mission, the sensor, and the products at issue are the TerraSAR-X; the feature retrieval approach is the deterministic model-based approach already tested on E-SAR images and now in phase of improvement and testing on high-resolution TerraSAR-X images. Together with assessing the performances of TerraSAR-X products, this paper deals with a new application which, until now, has not received enough attention even if being worth of it: monitoring of big tanks in suburban or urban areas. Recent research has demonstrated the value of polarimetric measurements for the correction of rain-path attenuation at X-band radar frequency and the estimation of rain parameters including drop-size distributions (DSD). The issue this paper is concerned with is to what degree uncertainties in attenuation correction can affect the estimation of DSD. Since attenuation-correction uncertainty enhances with rain path, our hypothesis is that DSD retrieval uncertainty at X-band may deteriorate with range. In this paper, we evaluate the relative accuracy of X-band DSD retrieval against DSD estimates from S-band radar observations and in situ disdrometer spectra. We present comparisons of various techniques for estimating DSD model parameters from attenuation-corrected X-band dual-polarization radar data. Coincident X-band polarimetric-radar (XPOL) and S-band polarimetric-radar dual-polarized radar measurements from the International H2O Project experiment as well as coincident XPOL (MP-X) measurements over disdrometer during a typhoon storm case in Japan are used to assess the accuracy of the different DSD retrieval algorithms applied to X-band radar measurements. Extraction of features from images has been a goal of researchers since the early days of remote sensing. While significant progress has been made in several applications, much remains to be done in the area of accurate identification of high-level features such as buildings and roads. This paper presents an approach for detecting bridges over water bodies from multispectral imagery. The multispectral image is first classified into eight land-cover types using a majority-must-be-granted logic based on the multiseed supervised classification technique. The classified image is then categorized into a trilevel image: water, concrete, and background. Bridges are then recognized in this trilevel image by using a knowledge-based approach that exploits the spatial arrangement of bridges and their surroundings using a five-step approach. A river extraction module identifies the rivers using a recursive scanning technique and geometric constraints. Using a neighborhood operator and the knowledge of the spatial dimensions of a typical bridge, we identify the possible bridge pixels. These potential bridge pixels are then grouped into possible bridge segments based on their connectivity and geometric properties. Finally, these bridge segments are verified on the basis of directional water index along different directions and their connectivity with the road segments. The approach proposed in this paper has been implemented and tested with images from the IRS-1C/1-D satellite that has a spatial resolution of 23.5 x 23.5 m. In order to extract a local and faint variation generated by a specific source from a physical value obtained by a remote-sensing satellite, we should focus on the difference between physical values at two points. We have developed a new data- restructuring algorithm based on this concept. This algorithm enables us to obtain a distribution of physical values at any interval and to calculate the difference between any two points regardless of the sensor-sampling interval. This paper presents this algorithm and how to implement it on a computer. Based on this data-restructuring algorithm, we have established a new data-processing method and analyzed the brightness-temperature data obtained by a microwave radiometer. As a result, we have successfully extracted the feature associated with a volcanic eruption. This feature cannot be extracted from brightness temperatures directly. In this paper, an investigation of the potential of rapid refractivity retrieval is presented. The retrieval technique utilizes radar phase measurements of ground clutter to derive near-surface refractivity, which has been commonly used as a proxy for humidity, given its close relation to vapor pressure. Surface humidity is an important meteorological parameter and has been known to play an important role in convective initiation. In this paper, the refractivity retrieval technique is exploited by using smaller numbers of samples for phase calculation, which is a fundamental process in refractivity retrieval. The impetus for this paper is to explore the possibility of rapid refractivity retrieval by exploiting the rapid beam-steering capability of a phased-array radar. Using the National Weather Radar Testbed in Norman, OK, a 64-pulse per radial raw-data set was collected for conventional refractivity processing. Then, subsets of the 64 samples were extracted to emulate shorter dwell periods and the corresponding more rapid experiments. The test cases that were considered are 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 samples. Refractivity fields retrieved using smaller numbers of samples are compared against the reference field, which was obtained using the entire 64-sample data set. It will be shown that, statistically, significant refractivity fields can be obtained from as short as a two-sample dwell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spatial structures displayed by remote sensing imagery are essential information characterizing the nature and the scale of spatial variation of Earth surface processes. This paper provides a new approach to characterize the spatial structures within remote sensing imagery using stochastic models and geostatistic metrics. Up to now, the second-order variogram has been widely used to describe the spatial variations within an image. In this paper, we demonstrate its limitation to discriminate distinct image spatial structures. We introduce a different geostatistic metric, the first-order variogram, which used in combination with the second-order variogram, will prove its efficiency to describe the image spatial structures. We then develop a method based on the simultaneous use of both first- and second-order variogram metrics to model the image spatial structures as the weighted linear combination of two stochastic models: a Poisson line mosaic model and a multi-Gaussian model. The image spatial structures are characterized by the variance weight and the variogram range related to each model. This method is applied to several SPOT-HRV Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images from the VALERI database in order to characterize the nature of the processes structuring different types of landscape. The mosaic model is an indicator of strong NDVI discontinuities within the image mainly generated by anthropogenic processes such as the mosaic pattern of crop sites. The multi-Gaussian model shows evidence of diffuse and continuous variation of NDVI generally engendered by ecological and environmental processes such as the fuzzy pattern observed over forest and natural vegetation sites.
