This paper presents the ice thickness, fine resolution internal reflecting horizons (IRHs), and distinct bottom topography measurements of Chinese Kunlun Station and Grove Mountains, Antarctica, derived from sounding these glaciers with a high-resolution radar. To enable the development of next-generation ice-sheet models, we need information on IRHs, bottom topography, and basal conditions. To this end, we performed measurements with the progressively improved ice-sounding radar system, currently known as the high-resolution ice-sounding radar developed by the Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation and Sensing Technology of Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. We processed the collected data using focused synthetic aperture radar (SAR) algorithm named the modified range migration algorithm using curvelets and the modified nonlinear chirp scaling algorithm to improve radar sensitivity and reduce along-track surface clutter. Representative results from selected transects indicate that we successfully sounded 3-km-thick ice with a fine resolution of 0.75 m. In this paper, we provide a brief description of the radar system, discuss the focused SAR processing algorithms, and provide sample results to demonstrate the successful sounding of the ice sheet in Antarctica. This paper reports the first use of a 3-D radar imaging for observing E-region field-aligned plasma irregularities (FAIs) in the midlatitude ionosphere. Five carrier frequencies equally spaced between 46.25 and 46.75 MHz were transmitted alternately with consecutive radar pulses, and 20 receivers were employed for receiving the radar echoes. The experiments were carried out using the middle and upper atmosphere radar (34.85°N, 136.10°E), with the radar beams steered to the geographic north and 6.6° north by east, at the zenith angles of 51.0° and 51.5°, respectively. The 2-D imaging with the echoes collected by the 19 of the 20 receivers revealed that in zonal dimension, the off-beam direction of arrival (DOA) of the echo region changed alternately between positive and negative values, which can be attributed to the highly localized FAIs drifting zonally through the radar beam. On the other hand, the off-beam DOA in meridional dimension was negative and positive, respectively, at higher and lower range locations, which were supposed to be due to the meridional drift component of FAIs. A combination of 5 frequencies and 19 receivers achieved a 3-D imaging of the FAI structures, illustrating small-scale FAI striations and bubblelike plasma structures in the radar volume. Moreover, declination of geomagnetic field line was examined from the imaged 3-D brightness distribution in the radar volume; the estimated declination of geomagnetic field line was in agreement with that computed from the International Geomagnetic Reference Field model in 2011. This paper examines the potential in extracting the instantaneous location of maritime moving targets using a passive multistatic radar with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as illuminators of opportunity and a single receiver. This paper presents a theoretical framework for the localization of a moving target from a set of bistatic range measurements. The algorithm and its predicted accuracy are presented. The localization is achieved by what is essentially a multilateration technique, which can be applied while the transmitting platform is also in motion. The algorithms and the accuracy predictions, as a function of the number of transmitters, have been experimentally confirmed via a dedicated experimental campaign, where two different maritime targets were detected by up to 12 GNSS satellites belonging to different satellite constellations (GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo) simultaneously. To the best of the author’s knowledge, these are the first results of their kind and on this scale not only for GNSS-based passive radar but also for multistatic radar in general. This paper addresses the exploitation of global navigation satellite systems as opportunistic sources for the joint detection and localization of vessels at sea in a passive multistatic radar system. A single receiver mounted on a proper platform (e.g., a moored buoy) can collect the signals emitted by multiple navigation satellites and reflected from ship targets of interest. This paper puts forward a single-stage approach to jointly detect and localize the ship targets by making use of long integration times (tens of seconds) and properly exploiting the spatial diversity offered by such a configuration. A proper strategy is defined to form a long-time and multistatic range and Doppler (RD) map, where the total target power can be reinforced with respect to, in turn, the case in which the RD map is obtained over a short dwell and the case in which a single transmitter is employed. The exploitation of both the long integration time and the multiple transmitters can greatly enhance the performance of the system, allowing counteracting the low-power budget provided by the considered sources representing the main bottleneck of this technology. Moreover, the proposed single-stage approach can reach superior detection performance than a conventional two-stage process where peripheral decisions are taken at each bistatic link and subsequently the localization is achieved by multilateration methods. Theoretical and simulated performance analysis is proposed and also validated by means of experimental results considering Galileo transmitters and different types of targets of opportunity in different scenarios. Through-the-wall radar imaging is a powerful tool for mapping buildings’ interiors and hidden objects behind the walls. Through-the-wall imaging systems require large linear arrays of directive antennas to form a large aperture for obtaining images with a high cross-range resolution. However, the low mobility and limited field of view of the conventional systems limit their imaging capability. The concept of all-directions through-the-wall imaging has recently been proposed to enhance the mobility, cross-range resolution, and field of view of the through-the-wall imaging systems. In this technique, the large linear array of directive antennas is replaced by a dense 2-D synthetic array formed by small moving transceivers utilizing omnidirectional antennas. The 2-D synthetic array provides 360° high cross-range resolution images. This paper focuses on the implementation of a system realizing all-directions through-the-wall imaging and measurement results. A bi-static frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system utilizing a simple wireless synchronization scheme and wideband omnidirectional antennas is fabricated and an image formation technique compatible with bi-static FMCW imaging system is presented. This paper explores (full-) waveform inversion in passive seismics to simultaneously optimize the source parameters of seismic events together with the properties of the medium of wave propagation. A heuristic optimization algorithm inspired in iterative design is proposed, which incorporates ideas from particle swarm optimization and variable projection. The algorithm is designed to accelerate convergence, improve stability and robustness, and minimize the number of user-defined parameters. The performance of the algorithm is illustrated with a real data example of hydraulic stimulation monitoring using a surface array of seismic receivers. In this example, only the locations of the receivers are known. The inversion is targeted to jointly optimize the parameters of a viscoelastic velocity model, associated models of receiver residual statics, wavelet signatures for direct compressional and shear arrivals, spatiotemporal locations of the input seismic events, and their corresponding moment tensors. Velocity model and locations are compared to estimations of the same parameters previously obtained through a well-established workflow using decoupled inversions. Results from both approaches show consistency. The main advantage of the joint approach is, therefore, the possibility of incorporating additional unknowns into the optimization to obtain self-consistent solutions using a single inversion process. In this paper, we present a set of compact formulations to model the response of the electromagnetic well-logging tools in eccentric multilayered medium. Different from previous models, the coil antennas are imbedded in an insulating protection layer (IPL) rather than expose to the borehole directly, which agrees much better with some real tools, e.g., the array induction logging tool. The effects of both metal mandrel and an IPL are considered in eccentric scenarios. Our formulations are derived on the basis of the ratios of cylindrical functions, which obviate the notorious overflow issues during numerical computation. This paper proposed a 3-D surface deformation retrieval algorithm for synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) based on a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) as a transmitter and a fixed receiver (GNSS-based InSAR), where simultaneous multiple GNSS transmitters and a repeat-pass concept were adopted. This paper consists of three parts. First, the interferometric phase model under repeat-pass concept was established for both general and bistatic permanent scatterer (PS) cases in the GNSS-based InSAR. Second, the 3-D deformation retrieval algorithm was presented, and the position dilution of precision was analytically derived to evaluate the performance of measured 3-D deformation. Third, using a designed transponder onboard displacement device as the bistatic PS, the feasibility of 3-D deformation retrieval using GNSS-based InSAR was confirmed by repeat-pass experiments, where four simultaneously available Beidou-2 Inclined Geosynchronous Orbit satellites were used as transmitters, and 16 repeat-pass data sets were collected. Using the proposed algorithm, the final experimental results suggested that the GNSS-based InSAR could obtain deformation estimations with better accuracy than at 5 mm in all three directions. This paper introduces a bistatic fast backprojection synthetic aperture radar (SAR) algorithm that is available for different bistatic geometries. The proposed algorithm is tested with the bistatic CARABAS-like data, and the results indicate that the algorithm is a good candidate for bistatic SAR data processing. The image quality measurements are quite similar to the referenced values obtained with the bistatic global backprojection algorithm. That is, the peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR) is −13.7 dB in comparison to the referenced PSLR of −13.8 dB. The half-power beamwidths (HPBWs) measured on the cuts in $x$ and $y$ and the direction where the peak sidelobes locate are 2.8, 3.7, and 3.5 m, respectively, which are approximate to the referenced HPBWs. The conventional spaced-receiver approach uses amplitude scintillations to estimate equatorial ionospheric irregularity drift velocities. This approach is less applicable at high latitudes where there is a lack of substantial amplitude scintillations. This paper presents a method to estimate ionosphere irregularity horizontal drift velocities based on GPS signal carrier phase measurements. Joint time–frequency analysis of the carrier phase measurements using an adaptive periodogram technique generates time-varying spectrograms of ionospheric irregularity-induced phase fluctuations. Cross correlation of the spectrograms between antenna pairs provides time lag information on propagating radio signals through the same ionospheric structure. The time lag information is combined with known positions of the receiver array, satellite orbits, and assumed irregularity altitude to infer ionospheric irregularity horizontal drift velocity. This paper presents a reliable technology for GPS/Global'naya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) surveying under difficult observational conditions, i.e., in forest environments. The technology is based on the rapid static and Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) methods. Test surveys for the developed technology were carried out on a point in a dense forest, with a high degree of difficulty for satellite access. The coordinates of the point were determined by three GPS/GLONASS receivers positioned in a line on a special base, which were separated by a fixed distance of 0.5 m. The test surveys were conducted using Topcon HiPer Pro receivers with 10-Hz RTK positioning and gathering data at a sampling rate of 10 Hz. Practical tests for the presented technology showed that rapid static surveys based on three rover GPS/GLONASS receivers were a quite efficient technology in forest environments (unlike the RTK) and allowed for reliable centimeter accuracy of the determined positions to be obtained in 5-min observational sessions. Evaluation of hydraulic fractures has been under intensive study since the last decade. Among published works, only a few have included casing effects. This paper focuses on the through-casing electromagnetic (EM) induction imaging method that evaluates hydraulic fractures with enhanced contrasts. An experimental system and an inverse scattering algorithm are presented. The laboratory scaled experimental system is built for the feasibility study of the EM induction imaging method for the through-casing hydraulic fracture evaluation. To develop the inverse scattering algorithm, fractures outside boreholes with metallic casing are modeled by a novel hybrid approximation method. This method combines the distorted Born approximation and the mixed order stabilized bi-conjugate gradient fast Fourier transform method to solve the forward scattering problem. The variational Born iterative method is applied to solve the nonlinear inverse problem iteratively. Experimental results show that the inverse scattering algorithm is effective for EM contrast enhanced through-casing hydraulic fracture evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a simulation study on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reflections focusing on a phase altimetric method for ocean topography retrieval. It examines carrier phase residuals of Earth-reflected GNSS signals in preparation for the GNSS Reflectometry Radio Occultation and Scatterometry experiment aboard the International Space Station (GEROS-ISS). The residuals' sensitivity to ocean topography (maximum of 2-m amplitude variation of global sea level) is shown. A trigonometric approach to determine the specular reflection point is proposed. Reflection events are simulated assuming different low Earth orbit receivers and GNSS-type transmitters. Suitable events for phase altimetry are assumed between 5° and 30° elevation lasting between 10 and 15 min with ground tracks length of > 3000 km. Typical along-track footprints (1 s integration time) have a length of about 5 km. Within the assumed elevation range the coherent footprint ellipse has a major axis between 1 and 6 km. A Master–Slave sampling is proposed to approximate large-scale delay and Doppler variations of the reflected signal (Slave channel) relative to the direct signal (Master channel). Slave residuals of an example event are simulated to retrieve a small-scale phase delay for ocean topography inversion. The signal-to-noise ratio restricts the quality of the topography results. Height precision on sub-decimeter level for 30-dB SNR is degraded up to a meter level for 20-dB SNR. Ionosphere-free linear combination allows keeping the precision level. Troposphere refraction degrades precision particularly at the low elevation limit. Precision improves toward higher elevations. The tolerance to ocean roughness decreases in the same way. Being capable of providing weather-independent, day-and-night, forward-looking, and high-resolution images, bistatic forward-looking synthetic aperture radar (BFSAR) is a promising sensing technique in applications such as the scene-matching-aided navigation for recently emerging high-speed maneuvering platforms (HMPs). Because of the high speed and the great maneuverability of HMPs and the bistatic forward-looking configuration, conventional image formation algorithms, such as polar format algorithm (PFA), are no longer suitable for HMP-borne BFSAR (HMP-BFSAR). Hence, in this paper, we propose a novel PFA for HMP-BFSAR image formation. In the proposed PFA, a range model, termed as quasi-continuous -move range model, is established by taking the maneuvers of the receiver during pulse propagation into account instead of adopting stop-and-go approximation. Moreover, to take advantage of the collected $k$ -set efficiently, an affine mapping, termed as $k$ -set affine mapping, is conceived to transform the parallelogram-shaped $k$ -set support region to a horizontal and quasi-rectangular one. Furthermore, to compensate for the defocus effect induced by wavefront curvature, a closed-form refocus filter based on the implicit function theorem is derived. Both point target simulation and distributed target simulation are presented in this paper. The simulation results show that the proposed PFA significantly outperforms the conventional PFA in terms of focusing quality and computational efficiency when applied to HMP-BFSAR image formation. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for 3-D rain field reconstruction using satellite signals. It uses the estimated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the ground receivers for low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites and, thus, indirectly estimates the path-integrated rain attenuation of the microwave communication links. A least-squares algorithm is employed to perform the 3-D tomographic reconstruction of the rain field. The proposed system model consists of an LEO satellite with a realistic overpass trajectory and multiple ground receivers with SNR estimators. Two synthetic rain events near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia are used to test the reconstruction outcome. This paper presents an efficient multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) borehole radar imaging method based on a high degree of freedom for subsurface sensing. The variable separations between the different transmitter and receiver pairs in MIMO borehole radar are considered and introduced as imaging coefficients into the expanded unified MIMO sample set, which gives the MIMO sample set desired characteristics of a high degree of freedom. By exploiting the high degree of freedom in the unified MIMO expanded sample set, the sample interpolation and energy migration of target reflections can be done in once efficient imaging processing for all transmitters of the MIMO radar system, and finally, accurate target image with low sidelobe level (SL) can be delivered. The computational cost of the proposed method will barely increase with the number of transmitters in the MIMO radar survey, which enables the proposed method to handle MIMO borehole radar imaging in an accurate and efficient manner. The imaging properties of the proposed method are proven to be superior to the conventional imaging methods in SL and computational cost, which is suitable for large MIMO borehole imaging surveys in subsurface sensing applications. Global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) receivers produce delay-Doppler maps (DDMs) by incoherently integrating coherent integration results. Due to system dynamics, during incoherent integration, the receiver aligns each coherent result by tracking the delay and Doppler of the specular point. This is known to cause a blurring of the spatial footprint of the Woodward ambiguity function (WAF) on the reflecting surface. In this paper, we demonstrate that the blurring of the WAF varies over the glistening zone (GZ), and even if a fixed point on the ground is tracked, blurring still occurs. We derive the expressions for the delay and Doppler change rates over the GZ and then predict the error introduced by range walk for typical GNSS-R scatterometry configurations. We find that ≈6 dB of loss is expected for a point scatterer near the edge of the GZ when a fixed point on the surface is tracked. The incoherent range walk compensation (IRWC) method is then presented for GNSS-R receivers to mitigate this loss. The IRWC method focuses the power in the DDM to the isodelay and iso-Doppler configuration occurring at the midpoint of the integration time. DDMs produced by tracking a fixed point with and without IRWC are simulated, and errors are found to be in agreement with those predicted. Spatial domain GNSS-R products will be improved with IRWC. Target detection will benefit from a larger usable swath, allowing longer tracking and detection times as a result of the increased target to clutter and noise ratio. At the same time, imaging applications will no longer suffer from a spatially variant blurring of the WAF, which limits the resolution of the estimated products. IRWC is shown to mitigate the range migration losses and improve the SNR of an imaging GNSS-R receiver by ≈6 dB near the edge of the GZ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A newly designed grounded electrical-source airborne transient electromagnetics (GREATEM) system was introduced recently. Detailed data preprocessing techniques to acquire the high-precision measured magnetic field are discussed here. Different from the previous work in which the reconstruction of the underground structure is performed in 1-D, we interpret the GREATEM data in 3-D by the volume integral equation (VIE) method in the frequency domain. Therefore, the VIE in the forward electromagnetic scattering model is formulated in the low-frequency regime. It is solved by using the stabilized biconjugate gradient fast Fourier transform (BCGS-FFT) method. In the nonlinear inversion, the Born iterative method (BIM) and the conjugate gradient method are adopted to minimize the cost function. A synthetic model of GREATEM survey is used to validate the proposed 3-D forward and inversion algorithms. Then, the field data from two GREATEM surveys are used to test the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed inversion algorithm. The reconstructed conductivity structures are consistent with geological drilling results, confirming the potential of our method for solving the 3-D GREATEM inversion problems in geophysical engineering applications. In geosynchronous spaceborne–airborne bistatic synthetic aperture radar (GEO-BiSAR) system, the airborne platform achieves high-resolution imaging by passively receiving the signal from the interested scenario. In this paper, the Doppler characteristics of GEO-BiSAR and the individual contribution of the transmitter and the receiver are first analyzed. The airborne receiver is found to be the dominant contributor for the total Doppler bandwidth, which will lead to Doppler spectrum aliasing regarding the low pulse repetition frequency (PRF) adopted by the GEO-SAR. In order to suppress the Doppler ambiguity without adjusting the PRF of GEO-SAR, azimuth multichannel receiving technique is introduced to the airborne receiver. The multichannel transfer function is derived based on the method of series reversion and the spectrum reconstruction algorithm is then modified for multichannel GEO-BiSAR. Moreover, the reconstruction performance is closely related to the corresponding spacing between each channel (i.e., channel configuration). Therefore, the channel configuration design for GEO-BiSAR aims at optimizing the azimuth ambiguity-to-signal ratio with a satisfactory level of signal-to-noise ratio scaling factor by adjusting the channel configuration. The channel configuration design is modeled as a constrained single objective optimization problem (CSOP). Then, a channel configuration design method based on differential evolution and feasibility rule is proposed to solve the CSOP and obtain the channel configuration for the receiver with the optimal reconstruction performance. Finally, simulations results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, and characteristics of channel configuration are analyzed in detail, which can be a practical guide for the implementation of multichannel GEO-BiSAR systems. Due to its flexibility and low cost, the bistatic forward-looking synthetic aperture radar (BFSAR) which employs side-looking transmitter and forward-looking receiver has been studied in recent years. Sparsity-based techniques have been applied in the field of BFSAR imaging and show great potential. In sparsity-based BFSAR imaging, compensation of the motion errors is crucial to get a well-focused image. For fields that admit a sparse representation, we propose a sparsity-based imaging approach integrated with motion error estimation and compensation in this paper. First, a novel joint phase-amplitude compensation-based motion error correction scheme is developed to cope with the spatial variance of motion error. Then, an inversion observation model of the range-Doppler algorithm combined with motion error correction is derived, based on which a joint problem of BFSAR imaging and motion error estimation is formulated as a sparse recovery problem and solved in an iterative way, where in each iteration, both image formation and motion error correction are carried out. Experiments on both the simulated and real BFSAR data show that the proposed method can obtain a more accurate estimation result, and generate better focused images compared with the existing methods. Risk mitigation strategies to reduce the impact of avalanches on infrastructures, such as evacuation of mountain villages, and planned closure of roads, railways and ski resorts, are heavily dependent on avalanche forecasting capability. Moreover, the possibility to determine the snow water equivalent (SWE) of a snowpack is a crucial step for water management strategies used, for example, in agriculture and hydroelectric power plants. In both cases, for dry snow, two key physical parameters are the total snow thickness and the wave speed in the medium. Microwave radars are being used to monitor snowpacks, but they invariably invoke external aids or a priori assumptions to calculate these physical parameters. This paper presents an innovative radar architecture for snowpack monitoring, of a single emitting and two receiving antennas. This novel configuration enables simultaneous identification of both total snow thickness and wave speed in the medium without any additional hypothesis or device. For dry snow, consequently, snow density and SWE can also be immediately determined. The proposed architecture is validated using first numerical simulations and then indoor and outdoor experimental results. The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data are beneficial for sensing the earth’s ionosphere by virtue of their temporal continuity and spatial coverage. In recent years, GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, BDS, and GALILEO) has developed rapidly, with BDS and GALILEO offering position, navigation, and timing services and the ongoing modernization of GPS and GLONASS. The customary approach to sensing the ionosphere normally uses the dual- or multifrequency (DF) data provided by geodetic-grade receivers and consists of two sequential steps. The first step is retrieving ionospheric observables using the carrier-to-code leveling technique. In the second step, using the thin-layer ionospheric model, one can isolate the main vertical total electron content (VTEC) for ionosphere sensing as well as the by-product of the satellite differential code biases (SDCBs) and the receiver differential code biases. In this paper, we proposed a multi-GNSS single-frequency (SF) precise point positioning approach enabling the simultaneous retrieval of VTEC and SDCBs with low-cost receivers. The root mean square of the VTEC differences between the values retrieved from the multi-GNSS SF method and DF method is approximately 0.5 total electron content unit in each system. In general, autofocus methods integrated with frequency-domain imaging algorithms are instrumental to obtain a well-focused bistatic forward-looking synthetic aperture radar (BFSAR) image in the presence of motion errors. Nevertheless, before applying autofocus methods to correct the azimuth phase errors, range cell migration (RCM) should be eliminated by the RCM correction (RCMC) procedure in frequency-domain imaging algorithms. With motion errors being taken into account, there always exists some residual nonsystematic RCM (NsRCM), which refers to the residual migration components after the RCMC procedure. For the conventional side-looking SAR, NsRCM is caused by motion errors. On the other hand, NsRCM of BFSAR is originated from motion errors before RCMC and the NsRCM amplified by the RCMC procedure. In this paper, we analyze the different types of NsRCM in BFSAR imaging and their relationship. Based on the analyses, we propose an autofocus NsRCM correction scheme for BFSAR imagery using frequency-domain imaging algorithms that can eliminate the range-dependent NsRCM. The proposed scheme consists of three steps. First, for the BFSAR data after range compression and RCMC, a division procedure is carried out in the azimuth direction. The subblocks with the highest signal-to-clutter ratio along the range direction are selected after the azimuth segmentation procedure. Second, for the selected subblocks, the total NsRCM is estimated based on the minimum-entropy criterion. Based on the estimation results, different parts of the NsRCM are obtained by solving an ordinary differential equation. Third, a two-step compensation of the NsRCM is executed to reach the spatially variant correction. Biomass is a spaceborn polarimetric P-band (435 MHz) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in a dawn–dusk low Earth orbit. Its principal objective is to measure biomass content and change in all the Earth’s forests. The ionosphere introduces the Faraday rotation on every pulse emitted by low-frequency SAR and scintillations when the pulse traverses a region of plasma irregularities, consequently impacting the quality of the imaging. Some of these effects are due to total electron content (TEC) and its gradients along the propagation path. Therefore, an accurate assessment of the ionospheric morphology and dynamics is necessary to properly understand the impact on image quality, especially in the equatorial and tropical regions. To this scope, we have conducted an in-depth investigation of the significant noise budget introduced by the two crests of the equatorial ionospheric anomaly (EIA) over Brazil and Southeast Asia. This paper is characterized by a novel approach to conceive a SAR-oriented ionospheric assessment, aimed at detecting and identifying spatial and temporal TEC gradients, including scintillation effects and traveling ionospheric disturbances, by means of Global Navigation Satellite Systems ground-based monitoring stations. The novelty of this approach resides in the customization of the information about the impact of the ionosphere on SAR imaging as derived by local dense networks of ground instruments operating during the passes of Biomass spacecraft. The results identify the EIA crests as the regions hosting the bulk of irregularities potentially causing degradation on SAR imaging. In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, images of ground moving targets (GMTs) are smeared, distorted, and shifted. Current GMT imaging methods are mostly based on range-Doppler algorithms, which have two main drawbacks: 1) coupling between range cell migration correction (RCMC) and Doppler parameter estimation and 2) cross terms degrade the performance of the nonlinear estimation methods. In this paper, an optimal 2-D spectrum matching method for SAR GMT imaging is proposed. The main innovation or advantage of this method is that the GMT imaging problem is transformed into a constrained optimization problem, and differential evolution is applied to guarantee a high-processing efficiency. As they are associated with the Doppler centroid variation compensation and range shift compensation processing, all GMT point scatterers can be well focused and well located. Compared with the current methods, the improvements exhibited by this method include three main benefits: 1) RCMC and Doppler parameter estimation can be simultaneously accomplished; 2) both along- and cross-track GMT velocities can be simultaneously estimated; and 3) this method can be applied to both monostatic and bistatic SARs. Calibration of microwave radiometers is a crucial task for reliable and accurate antenna temperature measurements in remote sensing applications. This paper describes a processing procedure for data calibration of noise-adding (NA) total power (TP) radiometers, without thermal stabilization, able to improve the radiometric resolution performance and keep good accuracy. This method, easily implementable, is based on the strong dependence of the radiometric gain on the internal physical temperature of the system. It provides a calibration of the output voltage measured in the TP mode exploiting the noise source power injection only every 30 min. The quality of the proposed procedure was assessed by means of three experiments carried out in different years and environmental conditions, using a low-cost NA TP radiometer operating at 12.65 GHz. The measurements show an uncertainty better than 0.7 K and, above all, a clear improvement in radiometric resolution (below 0.1 K). The radiometric resolution benefit is particularly appreciable in applications where the aim is the detection of small radiation power increments. Two experimental tests show how this method for data calibration effectively resolves the warm target counting inside the antenna footprint, while the same data measured with the standard NA procedure do not allow the same detection capability. Complex signal analysis allows separation of instantaneous envelope and phase of seismic waveforms. Seismic attributes have long routinely been used in geological interpretation and signal processing of seismic data as robust tools to highlight relevant characteristics of seismic waveforms. In the context of adjoint waveform inversion (AWI), it is crucial choosing an efficient parameter to describe the seismic data. The most straightforward option is using whole waveforms but the mixing of amplitude and phase parameters increases the nonlinearity inherent to the methodology. Several studies support the good functioning of the instantaneous phase (IP), a more linear parameter to measure the misfit between synthetic and recorded data. The IP is calculated using the inverse of the tangent function, where its principal value can be defined either wrapped in between different limits or also unwrapped. The wrapped phase presents phase jumps that reflect as noise in the inversion results. The conditioning of these discontinuities solves the problem partially and the continuous unwrapped IP is not a good descriptor of the waveform. For this reason, it is worth to explore beyond the traditional description of the IP parameter. Two alternative functions have been studied: 1) a revision of the triangular IP and 2) the first implementation of the normalized signal. The main objective of this paper is therefore, to review the fundamentals of the IP attribute in order to design robust IP-based objective functions which allow mitigating the inherent nonlinearity in the AWI method. This paper develops and characterizes the algorithms used to generate the Level 1 (L1) science data products of the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission. The L1 calibration consists of two parts: the Level 1a (L1a) calibration converts the raw Level 0 delay–Doppler maps (DDMs) of processed counts into received power in units of watts. The L1a DDMs are then converted to Level 1b DDMs of bistatic radar cross section values by unwrapping the forward scattering model and generating two additional DDMs: one of unnormalized bistatic radar cross section values (in units of square meters) and a second of bin-by-bin effective scattering areas. The L1 data products are generated in such a way as to allow for flexible processing of variable areas of the DDM (which correspond to different regions on the surface). The application of the L1 data products to the generation of input observables for the CYGNSS Level 2 (L2) wind retrievals is also presented. This includes a demonstration of using only near-specular DDM bins to calculate a normalized bistatic radar cross section (unitless, i.e., m2/m2) over a subset of DDM pixels, or DDM area. Additionally, an extensive term-by-term error analysis has been performed using this example extent of the DDM to help quantify the sensitivity of the L1 calibration as a function of key internal instrument and external parameters in the near-specular region. This paper proposes a synchronization algorithm for bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR) imaging in a spaceborne/stationary configuration. In real bistatic systems, synchronization errors are generally introduced into the received data. Additionally, the lack of precise imaging parameters, such as the position of the transmitter and the accurate sampling time, could affect the imaging quality greatly. Fortunately, the image could be well focused by the proposed algorithm in the case of lack of the accurate position of a transmitter and the sampling time. First, a preprocessing step is employed to remove synchronization errors through matching an echo signal with a direct signal. Then, a modified chirp scaling factor containing an error phase term is constructed, and the accurate position of the transmitter and the sampling time can be acquired by the phase extraction of the direct signal and the searching method based on contrast optimization. After that, the corresponding imaging process can be implemented. Finally, the proposed algorithm is validated by the simulation and experimental results, where TerraSAR-X is used as the illuminator. In this paper, we study the electromagnetic scattering of a conducting and permeable sphere buried in sea sediments. Instead of taking a uniform conducting medium in the previous work, we model marine environments as a layered medium that consists of the air, the sea, and the sediment. We adopt an integral equation technique to compute time-harmonic solutions for background and scattered fields under fundamental source excitations, i.e., vertical and horizontal magnetic dipoles. The corresponding transient scattering responses to causal step waveform are computed through the digital sine transform. The derived fundamental solutions provide convenient formulas tailored for three-layer medium modeling. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the scattered responses computed in the different backgrounds are approaching almost to the same decays at late times. However, the background fields can significantly mask the scattered responses. Subtracting assumed uniform background responses from “measured” total fields in the three-layered medium cannot provide a correct scattering response in the interested time range, i.e., 0.1–25 ms. To remove the background fields, we propose a conceptual gradiometer system that has receiver cubes installed radially symmetric with respect to a transmitting antenna. The results demonstrate that the suitable differential combinations are able to yield the scattering responses that well agree with those of a free space as the layered background fields in these combined receivers are equal and their influence are automatically canceled out. This paper presents the theory, algorithm, and results of a new bistatic interferometry synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) method. It employs the data acquired in an innovative bistatic configuration, which uses the orbital sensors as transmitters of opportunity and the stationary receivers on the ground, to generate a digital elevation model (DEM). In the bistatic spaceborne/stationary InSAR configuration, the interferometric phase only depends on the target-receiver range, which could not be obtained directly from the measured bistatic range. Therefore, the conventional transforming relationship between the interferometric phase and the topographic height is no longer practical. In order to solve the problem, we introduce a new conversion relationship between the interferometric phase and the topographic height, which is derived by the model of the ellipsoidal projection in the bistatic configuration. Meanwhile, the error analysis of the new conversion is carried out through a simulation. Both the simulated and measured data are used to test and verify the feasibility of the new bistatic InSAR method. In the spaceborne/stationary InSAR experiment, YaoGan-3 (an L-band spaceborne SAR system launched by China) was selected as the transmitter and two stationary receivers were mounted on the top of a tall building. A bistatic radar at X-band (11 GHz) using opportunity signals (Passive Reflectometry and Interferometry System (PARIS) concept implementing the interferometric technique) has been developed and tested in a coastal-based experimental setup. Digital satellite TV signals broadcast from geostationary orbit have been used as sources of opportunity, and correlation waveforms have been collected at different receiver bandwidths. Calibration algorithms to compensate instrumental errors have improved our observables and allowed us to obtain delay measurements with a precision of about 10 cm for wind speeds in the range of 3 m/s. A statistical analysis of the measurement noise is used to determine the quality of the obtained observables. We introduce a phase calibration scheme for an interferometric frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to correct range-dependent phase errors in FMCW SAR interferograms. We demonstrate that the receiver filters operating on the FMCW beat frequency signal account for most of the phase mismatch between the different receiver channels. The scheme presented estimates the phase error in each channel. We present results of the scheme for three estimation approaches (curve fitting, joint least squares, and maximum likelihood) for two different phase models. The results are quantified by computing the reduction in spectral energy associated with the phase mismatch. We find that phase error can be reduced by 14 dB using the approach. The high-frequency hybrid sky-surface wave radar (HF HSSWR) has recently been used to monitor large-area sea states. However, most of the HF HSSWR detection methods are based on the assumption of a no-tilt and constant height ionospheric model, and the influences caused by uneven electron density are ignored. This paper proposes a new surface current inversion scheme for the HF distributed HSSWR system, which considers the unknown ionospheric state as a black box and extracts the key parameters to compute the surface current based on a scattering model. The computational formula of the component of the current vector is explored using spatial scattering theory instead of an approximate bistatic model. In addition, the Fourier series expansion method is applied to the HF data to extract the real first-order Bragg frequency. Subsequently, the grazing angle and the bistatic angle can be found by inversion using the first-order Bragg frequency formula after searching out the common scattering patch of two receiving stations. Simultaneously, the coordinate registration of the currents can also be determined. The feasibility and effectiveness of this new algorithm are verified with field experimental results by comparing the current vectors derived from HSSWR and traditional HF SWR. The RMS differences of the magnitude and direction of the current vectors within the core common area of the two detection systems are about 10.2 cm/s and 9.5°, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TechDemoSat-1 (TDS-1) is an experimental Global Navigation Satellite System Reflections (GNSS-R) satellite launched in 2014. The GNSS-R receiver onboard performs real-time navigation and generates delay–Doppler correlation maps for Earth-reflected Global Positioning System (GPS) L1 C/A ranging signals. This paper investigates the performance of the TDS-1 data for ocean surface altimetry retrievals. The analysis includes consideration of the transmitter and receiver orbits, time tag corrections, models for ionospheric and tropospheric delays, zenith to nadir antenna baseline offsets, ocean and solid Earth tides, and a comparison with mean sea surface topography. An error budget is compiled to account for each error source and compared with the experimentally derived surface height retrievals. By analyzing data sets covering global ocean surfaces over ±60° latitude, the current performance of spaceborne GNSS-R altimetry with the TDS-1 data set is experimentally established. In comparison with the mean sea surface topography, the surface height residuals are found to be 6.4 m, $1\sigma $ with a 1-s integration time. A discussion of the factors limiting this performance is presented, with implications for future GNSS-R altimetry missions designed for the observation of mesoscale ocean circulation. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar techniques make use of multiple transmitters and multiple receivers to improve the spatial characterization of targets. In the case where the Bragg scattering $\vec {k}$ -vector can be assumed to be the same for all transmit–receive paths, MIMO methods can be seen as a way of increasing the number of effective receivers. In the last decades, there has been scientific interest in determining the spatial characteristics of ionospheric and atmospheric irregularities on the subtransmit beam scale, allowing the study of processes in their intrinsic scales, otherwise inaccessible using simple beamforming techniques. Interferometric methods, including aperture synthesis imaging, were used in the past with a single transmitter and multiple receivers [single-input multiple-output (SIMO)]. In this paper, we present the first implementation of MIMO techniques to improve the spatial resolution of aperture synthesis radar imaging of daytime equatorial electrojet irregularities observed using the Jicamarca Radio Observatory (JRO). Our implementation uses two spatially separated transmitters and four spatially separated receivers. In order to separate the contributions of each transmitter, time, code, and polarization diversity experiments have been tested. We find that all three diversity approaches can be used for ionospheric irregularities, but time and polarization diversity are not applicable in all situations due to the range and Doppler width of the echoes, and due to magnetoionic radio propagation effects. The results are evaluated by comparing new MIMO imaging results against the currently used SIMO imaging technique. We present and discuss the theoretical and practical aspects of the MIMO approach, so they can be applied to study other targets not only at JRO but also at other modular coherent scatter radars. One of the biggest challenges in forestry research is the effective and accurate measuring and monitoring of forest variables, as the exploitation potential of forest inventory products largely depends on the accuracy of estimates and on the cost of data collection. This paper presented a novel computational method of low-cost forest inventory using global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals in a crowdsourcing approach. Statistical features of GNSS signals were extracted from widely available GNSS devices and were used for predicting forest attributes, including tree height, diameter at breast height, basal area, stem volume, and above-ground biomass, in boreal forest conditions. The basic evidence of the predictions is the physical correlations between forest variables and the responses of GNSS signals penetrating through the forest. The random forest algorithm was applied to the predictions. GNSS-derived prediction accuracies were comparable with those of the most accurate 2-D remote sensing techniques, and the predictions can be improved further by integration with other publicly available data sources without additional cost. This type of crowdsourcing technique enables the collection of up-to-date forest data at low cost, and it significantly contributes to the development of new reference data collection techniques for forest inventory. This paper presents a new approach, called band subset selection (BSS)-based hyperspectral anomaly detection (AD), which selects multiple bands simultaneously as a band subset rather than selecting multiple bands one at a time as the tradition band selection (BS) does, referred to as sequential multiple BS (SQMBS). Its idea is to first use virtual dimensionality (VD) to determine the number of multiple bands, n\mathrm {BS} needed to be selected as a band subset and then develop two iterative process, sequential BSS (SQ-BSS) algorithm and successive BSS (SC-BSS) algorithm to find an optimal band subset numerically among all possible n\mathrm {BS} combinations out of the full band set. In order to terminate the search process the averaged least-squares error (ALSE) and 3-D receiver operating characteristic (3D ROC) curves are used as stopping criteria to evaluate performance relative to AD using the full band set. Experimental results demonstrate that BSS generally performs better background suppression while maintaining target detection capability compared to target detection using full band information. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in along-track interferometry (ATI) mode has been extensively applied in velocity measurements of ocean currents and ship detection. A notch filter was recently proposed and was demonstrated to be a promising tool for ship detection exploiting quad- or dual-polarization SAR information. In this paper, the investigation of the notch filter is extended to the dual-channel ATI-SAR mechanism for ship detection on the ocean surface. First, a theoretical proof that the interferometric magnitude performs better in ship detection than single-channel amplitude/intensity is given based on the signal-clutter-ratio improvement, which validates the advantages of interferometric SAR against conventional single-channel SAR for the purpose of ship observations on the ocean surface. Second, based on the proof, the version of the notch filter that is suitable for the ATI-SAR, that is, the interferometric notch filter (INF), is proposed. We then analyze the statistical models of the INF distance, which can facilitate the adaptive realization of INF for ship detection in ATI-SAR. Finally, the experimental results for dual-channel ATI-SAR data measured by NASA/JPL L-band AIRSAR verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and effectiveness of the INF. At present, a primary challenge of seismic data processing is the ability to recognize and identify first-break seismic signals with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in mountainous areas. Correlation-based supervirtual interferometry (SVI) can improve the SNR of refractions and diffractions to achieve high-quality results in velocity model construction and diffraction imaging from low SNR data. However, SVI is susceptible to coherent Gaussian noise and is limited to 2-D cases. This paper develops the cumulant-based coherent integration (CCI) method to enhance the first-break signals by using cumulant functions and multiple convolutions for both 2-D and 3-D land seismic data. The 2-D synthetic data example demonstrates that CCI can suppress coherent Gaussian noise and obtain results with higher SNR than SVI. The 3-D synthetic data example demonstrates the effectiveness of the 3-D CCI. Its application to 3-D field exploration seismic data measured in the mountainous areas of western China illustrates that the SNR of the first-break signals is much higher than that obtained by bandpass filtering, which is commonly employed in commercial software today. In many geophysical surveys, there is a predefined goal—to detect and locate very specific anomalies, those that correspond to buried objects (targets). The types of targets range from various types of pipes (metallic or not), to rebars or wires in walls to land mines. This paper presents a novel unsupervised method for automatically detecting targets, and extracting information about them and the medium in which they reside. Most existing detection methods are supervised, which means that one has to provide a training set (which can be labor expensive) in order to train a classifier. By contrast, the method presented here is unsupervised and is model based, which alleviates the need to manually annotate a training set. Another drawback of many existing methods is the underlying assumption of a homogeneous medium. This assumption is greatly relaxed for this method, since it assumes no a priori knowledge of the medium. Instead, it learns the medium’s properties from the targets themselves. Furthermore, our method is designed to be computationally efficient and applicable in real-time applications. It was implemented on the StructureScan Mini XT system (Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc.), and the runtime on that system was measured to be 20~\mu \texts per scan of 512 samples. Experiments on 50 ground penetrating radar images with 278 targets show that our method is able to detect the targets with high positioning accuracy, with a 95.3% detection rate and near-zero false alarm rate. Hydraulic fracturing is an essential way to improve the production of unconventional shale oil and gas. It is important to characterize the produced fractures using either acoustic or electromagnetic (EM) methods. Conventional EM solvers in the low-frequency range face significant challenges by such multiscale problems where the fracture width is orders of magnitude smaller than its diameters. Furthermore, the cased borehole environment is extremely difficult to simulate with conventional EM solvers due to meshing difficulties and the multiscale nature of the problem. In this paper, we develop a hybrid distorted Born approximation and 3-D mixed ordered stabilized biconjugate gradient fast Fourier transform (DBA-BCGS-FFT) method to simulate the very challenging 2-D, 2-D-axisymmetric, and 3-D hydraulic fracture models under both open and cased borehole environments. Numerical examples show that this method has orders of magnitude higher efficiency than the finite element method. The capabilities of the DBA-BCGS-FFT method for the induction tool fracture mapping are demonstrated by comparing with laboratory experimental results and other reference results. A postprocessing methodology is developed to validate abnormal ionospheric spatial decorrelation observed during the equatorial plasma bubble (EPB) events. While the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) remote sensing techniques have been used to measure the ionospheric gradients, the measurements can be easily corrupted during the ionospheric disturbances. Extremely large ionospheric gradients are required to be validated before being declared real ionospheric events as opposed to the artifacts of erroneous measurements. The use of existing methods is however limited due to the small size of EPBs compared with the baseline distances between GNSS network stations in equatorial regions. This paper proposes a new validation procedure which utilizes a time-step method to estimate gradients over any short distance. Equatorial anomaly events are visualized in multiple time series by combining all available sources, including severe gradients observed from the multiple widely spread stations, the estimated EPB and known satellite motions, and the known station locations. A similar ionospheric pattern over multiple station–satellite pairs supports the fact that they are impacted by the same EPB at different times and locations. An extreme ionospheric gradient of 3.09 TECU/km observed in the Brazilian region during the December 31, 2013 EPB event is validated to be real using this methodology. Through-the-wall radar imaging systems are utilized for mapping buildings' interiors and detecting static and moving objects hidden behind the walls. The current techniques rely on large linear antenna arrays with directional radiation pattern for obtaining high cross-range resolution, and their imaging capability is limited by the low array processing gain and field of view. This paper introduces a new technique for through-the-wall radar imaging in which the linear array is replaced by a dense 2-D synthetic array formed by an ad hoc network of moving transceivers with omnidirectional antennas. Applying this method enables imaging of building interiors from outside or inside with 360° field of view. As receivers move, the direct and reflected signals from a stationary transmitter are sampled at different positions within the roaming domain, and by combining such signal samples using an appropriate beam-forming technique, a large and dense array is synthesized to provide an accurate radar map of the buildings' interiors and hidden objects in all directions. To increase the system dynamic range, the direct signals between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) antennas are reduced, utilizing orthogonal polarizations for Tx and Rx. To improve the range resolution and reduce the background noise, a new method based on the generalized pencil of function method is proposed. This method can accurately detect the locations of the reflecting points within the image which, in combination with the standard back-projection focusing, provides high-quality radar images. This paper considers the exploitation of navigation satellite systems as opportunity transmitters for bistatic and multistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The simultaneous availability of multiple satellites over a scene of interest at different viewing angles allows multistatic SAR acquisitions using a single receiver on or near the ground. The resulting spatial diversity could be used to drastically improve image resolution or to enhance image information space. To exploit the availability of multiple satellites, two data fusion approaches are here considered. In the former, point features of the single images obtained from different perspectives are extracted and then combined, whereas in the latter, a multistatic image is first obtained by combining the single channel data at the image level and then the point features are extracted. This is achieved by considering ad hoc CLEAN-like techniques. These techniques have been developed on both the analytical and simulation levels and experimentally verified with real GNSS-based SAR imagery. The next generation of weather radars, which may also support other missions, is likely to be based on phased arrays that will utilize simultaneous receive beams to achieve the required update times. Some of the disadvantages of using simultaneous receive beams, such as higher two-way antenna radiation pattern sidelobes, can be mitigated by using adaptive beamforming. A majority of the existing adaptive beamforming algorithms are designed for point targets, and direct application to distributed scatterers (e.g., hydrometeors) can lead to significantly biased estimates of key radar variables. This paper presents an adaptive beamspace processing algorithm specifically designed for weather-surveillance radar applications. This paper addresses some important aspects for the spaceborne/stationary bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) (SS-BiSAR) imaging with the transmitter, TerraSAR-X, operated in staring spotlight (ST) mode. With the large integration time reaching 7.5 s and the azimuth steering span reaching \pm 2.2^0, several significant effects occur, including troposphere delay, precision phase and time synchronization, the curved orbit effect, azimuth spectrum aliasing problem, and efficient frequency domain focusing algorithm. To circumvent the main effects, corresponding solutions are proposed, including a precise synchronization strategy with troposphere delay correction based on the direct signal from the transmitter and a modified and integrative bistatic polar format algorithm (PFA). This paper covers the theoretical development, implementation, and analysis of the SS-BiSAR PFA based on 2-D fast Gaussian gridding nonuniform fast Fourier transform with wavefront curvature correction. Furthermore, the high-resolution ST-mode SS-BiSAR image processed by the proposed algorithm is acquired, and the differences of scattering behaviors between monostatic and bistatic SAR images are analyzed in detail. In this paper, we report measurements in Colorado and Utah of the disturbed very-low-frequency (VLF) signals from the NML Navy transmitter in North Dakota during the 2017 solar eclipse. Using an occultation mask of solar fluxes together with detailed chemistry and VLF propagation simulations, we quantify the D-region response to the eclipse, in terms of electron density variation, as well as the expected signatures of VLF transmitter signals. The VLF measurements, including an anomalous amplitude enhancement recorded in UT, can be quantitatively explained using the Wait and Spies ionospheric profile with a sharpness parameter of $\beta = 0.3$ km−1 above ~55 km and an increase in the D-region ionosphere height of $\Delta h' \simeq 8$ km. This sharpness parameter is consistent with previously reported rocket measurements and first-principles calculations. The best-fit results suggest a reduction of D-region electron density by ~90% during the eclipse in the D-region, implying an occultation of Lyman- $\alpha $ by nearly 99%. This finding agrees with detailed calculations of time-dependent obscuration factors utilizing the He 30.4-nm images from Solar Dynamics Observatory as a proxy for the distribution of Lyman- $\alpha $ across the solar disk and limb. Moreover, the present results show that subionospheric VLF propagation is sensitive to the sharpness parameter of the electron density profile in the D-region. Previously reported first-principles simulations have shown that the sharpness parameter is mostly controlled by the background concentration of minor neutral species. Thus, the VLF technique can be likely used to remotely sense these neutral species at and below the effective reflection altitudes of VLF waves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A modified 2-D reverse-time migration algorithm in the energy flow domain, called EF-RTM, is proposed for short impulse borehole radar (BHR) imaging. The key of the approach is based on Poynting’s theorem, which allows decomposition of the energy flux density (EFD) derived from the source and receiver wave fields in different wave-propagation directions. Then, imaging conditions, for example, zero-lag cross correlation (prestack migration) and zero-time imaging principle (poststack migration), are applied to the decomposed EFD-field components to obtain the migrated sections. The characteristics of the resulting images can be optionally combined or separately used for better BHR data imaging, interpretation, and analysis. In this paper, the EF-RTM algorithm is validated by numerical modeling and real field data and compared with the conventional RTM algorithm. All the results show that this new EF-RTM method is superior to the conventional RTM method: it inherits the high precision of RTM with additional imaging advantages, such as natural wave-field decomposition in different directions, improved migrated cross-range resolution, a better focus of the target’s shape, and migration noise reduction. The uncertainty of differential code bias (DCB) is one of the main error sources in the low Earth orbit (LEO) based total electron content (TEC) retrieval, whereas the derivation of the LEO DCB is not systematically studied. In this paper, we propose an improved DCB estimation method (ZERO method) based on the assumption that the LEO-based TEC can reach zero and also optimize the parameter configuration in the commonly used least square method (LSQ method). In the improved ZERO method, the combination of the lower quartile minimum relative TEC during each orbital revolution with the daily minimum relative TEC gives a stable and reliable DCB estimation. For the LSQ method, the 3-TECU cutoff vertical TEC with 10° cutoff elevation is considered to offer a reasonable DCB estimation. Subsequently, Global Positioning System (GPS) observations from multiple LEO satellites at different altitudes are used to study the variability of the LEO DCBs. Our results revealed that the LEO DCBs underwent obvious long-term variation and periodic oscillations of months. Moreover, the CHAMP data illustrated that the long-term variation of LEO DCBs is partly associated with the GPS satellite replacement, and the periodic variation can be attributed to the variation of the hardware thermal status, represented by the receiver CPU temperature in this study.
