Despeckling is a fundamental preprocessing step for applications using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data in most cases. In this paper, a guided filter with nonlinear weight kernels and adaptive filtering windows is presented for PolSAR image despeckling, in which the guidance image is constructed by a weighted average using the statistical traits of the speckled image. The output result is then estimated by another weighted average, with the aid of the fully polarimetric information from both the guidance image and the speckled image. In the experimental part, the filtering results obtained with both simulated and real PolSAR images reveal the positive performance of the proposed method in both reducing speckle and retaining details, when compared with some of the state-of-the-art algorithms. Establishing causal relations between random variables from observational data is perhaps the most important challenge in today’s science. In remote sensing and geosciences, this is of special relevance to better understand the earth’s system and the complex interactions between the governing processes. In this paper, we focus on an observational causal inference, and thus, we try to estimate the correct direction of causation using a finite set of empirical data. In addition, we focus on the more complex bivariate scenario that requires strong assumptions and no conditional independence tests can be used. In particular, we explore the framework of (nondeterministic) additive noise models, which relies on the principle of independence between the cause and the generating mechanism. A practical algorithmic instantiation of such principle only requires: 1) two regression models in the forward and backward directions and 2) the estimation of statistical independence between the obtained residuals and the observations. The direction leading to more independent residuals is decided to be the cause. We instead propose a criterion that uses the sensitivity (derivative) of the dependence estimator, the sensitivity criterion allows to identify samples most affecting the dependence measure, and hence, the criterion is robust to spurious detections. We illustrate the performance in a collection of 28 geoscience causal inference problems, a database of radiative transfer models simulations and machine learning emulators in vegetation parameter modeling involving 182 problems, and assessing the impact of different regression models in a carbon cycle problem. The criterion achieves the state-of-the-art detection rates in all cases, and it is generally robust to noise sources and distortions. In this paper, we discuss the structure and performance of the maximum entropy temperature-emissivity separation (MaxEnTES) algorithm for assessing land temperature and emissivity from thermal infrared hyperspectral images. This procedure derives the emissivity spectrum and the temperature of the target adopting the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) estimation approach. The main advantage of the MaxEnt statistical inference is the absence of any external hypothesis, which is, instead, the main critical point characterizing any other temperature-emissivity separation (TES) algorithm. The MaxEnTES algorithm carries out the TES task adopting a modified version of the subgradient Shor's r-algorithm adopted for numerical optimization of a MaxEnt objective function. For this purpose, we have utilized the C/C++ Solvopt code from the University of Gratz to develop a practical data processing implementation. In this paper, we discuss the mathematical structure of the MaxEnTES algorithm and analyze its performance in depth using numerical simulations and remote sensing Multispectral Infrared/Visible Imaging Spectrometer images. We show that the MaxEnTES algorithm provides improved accuracy for temperature and emissivity estimation, lowering the standard estimation error to a fraction of degree Kelvin. In agreement with previous investigations, we find that the estimation accuracy grows when increasing the number of available spectral channels. The systematic errors affecting the temperature estimates (e.g., bias) are thoroughly evaluated. This paper focuses on the endmember extraction (EE) technique for analyzing hyperspectral images. We first prove that the reconstruction errors (REs) and abundance anomalies (AAs) (abundances that fail to satisfy the abundance constraints) are effective in extracting undetected endmembers. Then, according to the spatial continuity of the endmember objects and differing from noise or outliers with a sparse distribution, the endmembers are assumed to be located at some salient areas in the RE and AA maps. A novel EE algorithm termed saliency-based endmember detection (SED) is proposed, where the visual saliency model is introduced to explore and analyze the spatial information that is contained in the AA and RE maps. Specifically, the AA and RE maps are regarded as the visual inputs, whereas the endmembers are treated as the visual stimuli. In SED, we assume that the pure pixel assumption holds. Based on the characteristics of the human visual system, the proposed method can not only extract endmembers in homogenous areas, but it can also highlight the small targets whose abundances may be spatially varied. In addition, since the spatial information is exploited in the reconstruction, the capability of the endmembers to represent the hyperspectral scene is automatically considered in the process of EE, and the detected endmembers are both accurate and reliable. The spatial modulation coincidence imaging (SMCI), as a novel kind of microwave coincidence imaging method, is proposed in this paper. The SMCI system provides a new way to produce the time-space independent signal instead of multitransmitter architecture with wideband randomly modulated signal in radar coincidence imaging. Due to some special features, metamaterial plate is utilized as the reflective surface to modulate the incident signal to construct random radiation field. The resolution of SMCI system is analyzed under large viewing angle with two different transmitting signals. Reflective surface is nonuniformly divided to derive the expression of resolution. The analysis results show that the resolution of SMCI system is mainly determined by the size of reflective surface and center frequency, which is similar to the traditional aperture. The SMCI system is low cost and flexible in design. Simultaneously, it can avoid the synchronization problem between subsources. Moreover, the SMCI system can achieve the resolution of space target through single transmitter–single receiver radar system. High-resolution image can be reconstructed since the tests are nonlinear. Finally, a series of simulation experiments is presented based on the nondirect-viewing scene we proposed. For different applications with different requirements, many synthetic aperture radar (SAR) modes have been developed in the literature, such as, Terrain Observation by Progressive Scans (TOPS) SAR and sliding spotlight SAR. In this paper, we call TOPS SAR, sliding spotlight SAR, and spotlight SAR as beam steering SAR (BS-SAR for short). Comparing with stripmap SAR, BS-SAR can obtain a wide diversity of resolutions by increasing or reducing the azimuth synthetic time. Traditional polar formation algorithm (PFA) is an efficient algorithm which is mainly developed for spotlight SAR. The PFA has been validated to obtain well-focused results of raw data. In this paper, we extend the traditional PFA to process sliding spotlight SAR and TOPS SAR data, and we call it generalized PFA (GPFA). Comparing with the traditional PFA, GPFA contains a different azimuth deramping function and an additional azimuth scaling operation. This paper deals with subspace-based target detection in hyperspectral images. Specifically, it focuses on a general detection scheme where, first, background is suppressed through orthogonal-subspace projection and then target detection is accomplished. An adequate estimation of the background subspace is essential to a successful outcome. The background subspace has been typically estimated globally. However, global approaches may be ineffective for small-target-detection applications since they tend to overestimate the background interference affecting a given target. This may result in a low target residual energy after background suppression that is detrimental to detection performance. In this paper, we propose a novel and fully automatic algorithm for local background-subspace estimation (LBSE). Local background has typically a lower inherent complexity than that of global background. By estimating the background subspace over a local neighborhood of the test pixel, the resulting background-subspace dimension is expected to be low, thus resulting in a higher target residual energy after suppression which benefits the detection performance. Specifically, the proposed LBSE acts on a per-pixel basis, thus adaptively tailoring the estimated basis to the local complexity of background. This paper deals with an omega-K algorithm for focusing bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The key of the proposed algorithm is the derivation of a frequency mapping function by using Neo's method, of series reversion. The registration of the focused image onto the ground plane is discussed in detail, which is based on a conclusion that the targets whose instantaneous Doppler frequencies at zero azimuth time are the same as that of the reference target at zero azimuth time will all be focused at the reference target's azimuth position in the focused image. The range invariance region size, which the proposed algorithm can process, is also determined in this paper. The proposed algorithm can handle extreme bistatic configurations with wide apertures and large squint angles. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by simulation results. Although developed for the azimuth-invariant case, the proposed algorithm can be readily extended to the azimuth-variant case, as long as we divide the SAR data into blocks in the azimuth direction so that each block of SAR data can be assumed quasi-stationary in the azimuth direction. The frequency scaling algorithm (FSA) was proposed to process the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data acquired via the dechirp-on-receive approach. Some aspects of improving the FSA are investigated in this paper, based on which an extended FSA (EFSA) is presented. The general purpose of the EFSA is to reduce the effect of range spectrum shift of the intermediate processing results, which occurs during the scaling operation in the FSA, so as to achieve a more effective utilization of the processed bandwidth. The EFSA is implemented through time shifting the scaling and the inverse scaling functions used in the FSA and also the adjustment of the scaling factor. The derivation of the EFSA is detailed in this paper. Point target simulation in squinted imaging geometry indicates that the presented algorithm is more suitable for large-squint applications. Detection and imaging of multiple moving targets is a challenging task, particularly with real synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. In this paper, moving targets with different motion parameters are classified based on the relative locations of their spectra to that of the clutter. Based on the classification, a novel moving target processing strategy with real SAR data is proposed, including a two-step ground moving target indication (GMTI) algorithm and a practical ground moving target imaging (GMTIm) algorithm with motion error compensation. The two-step GMTI algorithm has the ability of indicating multiple moving targets, particularly those submerged by the clutter; the practical GMTIm algorithm shows a robust performance in real data moving target imaging since the motion errors are estimated and compensated. In this paper, we combine two techniques together, i.e., the fast Fourier transform-twofold subspace-based optimization method (FFT-TSOM) and multiplicative regularization (MR) to solve inverse scattering problems. When applying MR to the objective function in the FFT-TSOM, the new method is referred to as MR-FFT-TSOM. In MR-FFT-TSOM, a new stable and effective strategy of regularization has been proposed. MR-FFT-TSOM inherits not only the advantages of the FFT-TSOM, i.e., lower computational complexity than the TSOM, better stability of the inversion procedure, and better robustness against noise compared with the SOM, but also the edge-preserving ability from the MR. In addition, a more relaxed condition of choosing the number of current bases being used in the optimization can be obtained compared with the FFT-TSOM. Particularly, MR-FFT-TSOM has even better robustness against noise compared with the FFT-TSOM and multiplicative regularized contrast source inversion (MR-CSI). The linear range walk yields a significant range-azimuth coupling effect in a highly squinted synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Although the linear range walk correction (LRWC) technique can effectively mitigate such coupling effect, it causes azimuth variation in the resulting signal and, as such, the so-called “azimuth-shift invariance” property becomes invalid. In order to eliminate the azimuth variation, a new spectrum processing approach based on azimuth resampling is proposed in this paper. After performing the LRWC, the azimuth resampling is carried out in the 2-D frequency domain and transforms the signal spectrum to be equivalent to that of a broadside SAR. For squinted beamsteering SAR (BS-SAR), e.g., spotlight SAR, sliding spotlight SAR, and Terrain Observation by Progressive Scans SAR, the azimuth resampling is combined with the azimuth signal reconstruction algorithm. As a result, both the azimuth variation, which is induced by the LRWC, and the aliasing, which is caused by antenna beam steering, can be avoided. Therefore, after the azimuth resampling, the squinted SAR data can be focused by exploiting a conventional broadside SAR imaging algorithm. A near real-time flood detection algorithm giving a synoptic overview of the extent of flooding in both urban and rural areas, and capable of working during night-time and day-time even if cloud was present, could be a useful tool for operational flood relief management. The paper describes an automatic algorithm using high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite data that builds on existing approaches, including the use of image segmentation techniques prior to object classification to cope with the very large number of pixels in these scenes. Flood detection in urban areas is guided by the flood extent derived in adjacent rural areas. The algorithm assumes that high-resolution topographic height data are available for at least the urban areas of the scene, in order that a SAR simulator may be used to estimate areas of radar shadow and layover. The algorithm proved capable of detecting flooding in rural areas using TerraSAR-X with good accuracy, classifying 89% of flooded pixels correctly, with an associated false positive rate of 6%. Of the urban water pixels visible to TerraSAR-X, 75% were correctly detected, with a false positive rate of 24%. The goal of this paper is to suppress the narrowband interference (NBI) and wideband interference (WBI) in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) by using a nonparametric method. The method is based on the analysis of time–frequency characteristic of NBI and WBI from which an interference suppression filter combined with the constant false alarm rate algorithm is designed. In this approach, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is used to estimate the instantaneous frequency of the SAR echo data with interference. In the STFT domain, the instantaneous frequency spectrum is represented by wavelet, and then, the designed filter filters the corresponding wavelet coefficients of the interference components. In addition, this algorithm is robust to time-varying NBI and WBI. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated by the simulated and measured data, and the effectiveness is demonstrated. It is well known that the motion of a target induces range migration, especially for high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. Ground moving target imaging necessitates the correction of the unknown range migration. To finely refocus a moving target, one must accurately obtain the motion parameters for compensating the target trajectory. However, in practice, these parameters usually cannot be precisely estimated. This paper proposes a new imaging approach for ground moving targets without a priori knowledge of their motion parameters. In the devised method, the azimuth compression function is constructed in range frequency domain, which can eliminate the coupling effect between range and azimuth. Theoretical analysis confirms that the methodology can precisely focus targets without interpolation procedure. Multibaseline phase unwrapping is a critical processing procedure of multibaseline synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR). It has an advantage over single-baseline phase unwrapping in discontinuous-terrain-height estimation. In this paper, the pixels' combination information of multiple InSAR interferograms with different baseline lengths is deeply investigated, and the term ambiguity vector is proposed to represent a pixel's ambiguity number of multiple interferograms. It is also revealed that pixels with the same ambiguity vector have an exclusive pattern among them. A fast cluster-analysis (CA)-based method is proposed for multibaseline phase unwrapping. In this method, all pixels are first clustered into different groups according to their patterns, and then, information of the cluster center is used to unwrap the phases of pixels group by group. A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data simulator is an important tool for testing the system parameters and the imaging algorithms. In this paper, a scene raw data simulator based on an inverse w-k algorithm for bistatic SAR of a translational invariant case is proposed. The differences between simulations of monostatic and bistatic SAR are also described. The algorithm proposed has high precision and can be used in long-baseline configuration and for single-pass interferometry. A linear frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFMCW) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a highly miniaturized SAR that is suitable for use on a small unmanned aerial vehicle. In squint stripmap mode, the LFMCW SAR image quality is degraded by the presence of nonlinearities in the transmitted signal, combined with the large bandwidth introduced by the frequency scaling in the nonlinear frequency scaling (NLFS) algorithm. This paper proposes an extension of the NLFS algorithm called the Doppler-centroid-dependent frequency scaling algorithm. The algorithm introduces a new Doppler-centroid-dependent scaling factor to decrease the introduced bandwidth, effectively removing the range frequency aliasing, without extra computational load. Nonlinearity correction is performed at the same time as range cell migration correction. The validity of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated with point target simulation results. For micromotion targets with rotating parts, the inverse synthetic-aperture-radar image of the main body may be shadowed by the micro-Doppler. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an imaging algorithm based on the complex-valued empirical-mode decomposition. First, the radar echoes are decomposed into a series of complex-valued intrinsic-mode functions (IMFs). Then, the IMFs from the rotating parts and those from the main body are separated according to the characteristics of their zero-crossings. Finally, the well-focused imaging of the main body via traditional imaging algorithm and the accurate parameter estimation of the rotating part can be obtained. In this paper, a new noise reduction algorithm is introduced and applied to the problem of denoising hyperspectral imagery. This algorithm resorts to the spectral derivative domain, where the noise level is elevated, and benefits from the dissimilarity of the signal regularity in the spatial and the spectral dimensions of hyperspectral images. The performance of the new algorithm is tested on two different hyperspectral datacubes: an Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) datacube that is acquired in a vegetation-dominated site and a simulated AVIRIS datacube that simulates a geological site.
