Multitemporal synthetic aperture radar interferometry (MT-InSAR) is able to reconstruct a 3-D surface model with high precision but requires a long waiting time to get the multibaseline synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The array InSAR system can acquire multibaseline images in a single flight, which significantly improves the practical capability of 3-D reconstruction. However, the array InSAR system with many channels has very high complexity in both system and processing because of cross-channel calibration and decoupling. Thus, reducing the number of channels requires the investigation of the 3-D reconstruction algorithm to be suitable for sparse array InSAR images. This work proposed an asymptotic 3-D phase unwrapping (PU) algorithm for 3-D reconstruction using sparse array InSAR images, i.e., as few as three or four channels. A 2-D (space) + 1-D (baseline) PU framework is developed to improve the reliability of the 3-D PU, and a novel asymptotic strategy is proposed for the combination of the short–long baseline interferogram. Using successful unwrapping (SU) criteria, the bounds of the possible baseline combinations and the expected minimal coherence are derived, respectively. The main advantage of the proposed algorithm is the reliable PU with very sparse channels and an analysis of the possible baseline combinations. The experimental results by both the simulated and real data show that the proposed method can achieve a 3-D reconstruction using only three-pass array InSAR images and optimize the baseline design for the array InSAR system. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is an efficient tool for global large-scale digital elevation model (DEM) generation. However, for steep terrain, the current approaches cannot stably reconstruct valid DEM products from a single-baseline InSAR image pair without an external reference DEM due to the influence of shadow/layover geometries, phase noise, and the Itoh condition limitation in the phase unwrapping (PU) process. In this article, a novel stereo-radargrammetry-assisted PU (SAPU) approach with no need for external auxiliary information is proposed to eliminate the constraint of the Itoh condition by exploiting the internal stereo-radargrammetric shifts. The method reduces the phase gradient in the interferogram and guides the PU process with automatically selected tie points. Notably, the current stereo-radargrammetry approaches will deteriorate to an incoherent state in steep terrain, hampering the reliability and accuracy of SAPU. Accordingly, we also propose an adaptive weighted subwindow-coherent stereo-radargrammetric shift estimation (AWS-CSE) method to improve the accuracy of subpixel shifts by introducing local topographic phase consistency in coherence estimation. We quantitatively validate the performance of the proposed methods based on the L-SAR 01 simulation data and three pairs of repeat-pass single-baseline Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) phased array type L-band synthetic aperture radar (PALSAR) images from different areas, comparing the results with those of various traditional and deep-learning-based PU methods. Multiple-input and multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO SAR) is a very potential technique for high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) imaging due to the fact that it can provide more degrees of freedom. In this article, an innovative MIMO-HRWS SAR imaging system is introduced with segmented phase coding (SPC) waveforms. However, it is well-known that the echo separation issue is the most technical challenge for MIMO SAR. It has shown that the separation of orthogonal echoes from cross correlation interference can be achieved by scan-on-receive (SCORE). However, this method often requires large computing resources on board, especially for null-steering process. For this, we propose a two-stage spaceborne–ground echo separation scheme. This scheme is mainly divided into two steps: the first step is a real-time SCORE beamforming process on board to reduce the downlink data volume, and the second step is a bandpass–null-steering process to suppress the interfering echoes on the ground. Thus, this scheme allows for the low computing resources on board and sufficient suppression of the interference simultaneously. Following this scheme, the MIMO-HRWS SAR system enables its number of equivalent phase centers nearly double that of the azimuth multichannel SAR system, leading to higher resolution and wider swath imaging. The spatial correlation of ice-sounding data can be used to trace internal isochronic layers and synchronize the age–depth relationship between different ice core sites, which is difficult using existing imaging methods. In this study, we propose a new algorithm to address the opportunity that applying spatial correlation to ice-sheet imaging offers. The algorithm is a spatial-correlation-based ice-sounding imaging method using fast back projection (FBP) that successfully improves the spatial correlation of imaging results with high efficiency. We give the specific steps to implement the algorithm and apply it to simulate both point targets and ice-sounding radar data to demonstrate its validity in imaging ice sheets. Furthermore, compared with two previous methods, the proposed algorithm improves the spatial correlation without degrading the ability of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement and processing efficiency. Because optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are complementary, their registration has received extensive attention in joint applications. However, robust optical and SAR image registration is challenging due to substantial geometric and radiometric differences. To address this problem, we propose a fast and robust registration algorithm for optical and SAR images based on a novel feature type known as the adjacent self-similarity (ASS). The ASS feature of the pixelwise feature representation is defined to quickly and finely capture the structural features of the image. The ASS feature is extracted by using an optimized offset mean filtering method in a neighborhood of the unit pixel radius to accelerate and refine calculations and the local statistics weighted difference operation to suppress coherent speckles. Based on the ASS feature, we extract the minimum self-similarity map (SSM) and the index map, which are robust against radiometric differences and speckles. Then, based on the excellent characteristics of the two maps, we propose a feature detector based on suppressing the local nonmaximum on the minimum SSM and a novel feature descriptor based on calculating the distribution histogram of the index map in a log-polar grid. In addition, we design a rotation invariance enhancement method for the descriptor to improve the rotation invariance robustness of the algorithm. We conduct experiments with both synthetic and real image pairs. The registration results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has good scale and rotation invariance, as well as good antinoise ability, and that the algorithm performs better than existing state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of registration robustness, accuracy, and efficiency. Multimodal land cover classification (MLCC) using the optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) modalities has resulted in outstanding performances over using only unimodal data due to their complementary information on land properties. Previous multimodal deep learning (MDL) methods have relied on handcrafted multibranch convolutional neural networks (CNN) to extract the features of different modalities and merged them for land cover classification. However, natural-image-oriented handcrafted CNN models may not be the optimal strategies to handle remote sensing (RS) image interpretation problems, due to the huge difference in terms of imaging angles and imaging ways. Furthermore, few MDL methods have analyzed optimal combinations of hierarchical features from different modalities. In this article, we propose an efficient multimodal architecture search framework, namely, multimodal semantic consistency-based fusion architecture search ($\text{M}^{2}$ SC-FAS) in continuous search space with the gradient-based optimization method, which can not only discover optimal optical- and SAR-specific architectures according to the different characteristics of the optical and SAR images, respectively, but also realizes the search of optimal multimodal dense fusion architecture. Specifically, the semantic consistency constraint is introduced to guarantee dense fusion between hierarchical optical and SAR features with high semantic consistency and then capture the complementary performance on land properties. Finally, the basis of curriculum learning strategy is adopted on $\text{M}^{2}$ SC-FAS. Microwave photonic synthetic aperture radar (MWP-SAR) offers a larger signal bandwidth than conventional SAR, and its theoretical resolution can be improved to centimeter level. To achieve same order of magnitude resolution in the azimuth direction, long synthetic aperture is always required, which results in extremely high requirements for the accuracy of imaging procedure. Compared with the conventional SAR imaging algorithms, two major problems should be considered: 1) the scattering characteristics of target might vary from the frequency of signal and the angle of incidence, which seriously affects the coherence of received echo and 2) the imaging of the MWP-SAR system is more sensitive to motion errors and therefore requires higher accuracy of motion compensation processing. To solve the above issues, a high-precision imaging method for MWP-SAR is proposed. First, based on the attribute scattering center (ASC) model, this article analyzes the target scattering characteristics with different frequencies and incident angles. Then, according to the influence of scattering phase on MWP-SAR imaging, an optimal subaperture division algorithm is proposed to guarantee the coherence of each subaperture data and better imaging results. Furthermore, to compensate for the effects of high-order motion errors, this article proposes a motion error estimation algorithm based on subimage registration, where the full-aperture high-order motion errors can be divided into multiple linear components, and the flight trajectory of platform can be accurately reconstructed. Finally, a full-aperture time-domain high-precision imaging method is presented, and the effectiveness of the proposed formation is verified by both simulation and actual airborne MWP-SAR data processing. The imaging performance of the lunar-based synthetic aperture radar (LBSAR) is susceptible to the orbital perturbation effects. In particular, the perturbations of orbital inclination and right ascension of ascending node (RAAN) could give rise to the temporally varying orbit drift of LBSAR and further lead to Doppler errors in the radio signal. As a result, the LBSAR image performance might be influenced by such effects. This study comprehensively probes into the phase error induced by perturbations of orbital inclination and RAAN, and its effects on the LBSAR imaging performance are further explored. It is found that the LBSAR imaging performance in terms of focusing quality and geometric fidelity is affected by the perturbations of orbital inclination and RAAN, wherein the deterioration of focusing quality is closely associated with the synthetic aperture time. In this regard, the azimuth resolution on a decameter level is optimum for Earth observation of LBSAR with satisfactory image quality. Regarding the geometric fidelity, the accuracy requirement for the orbit determination of the LBSAR under perturbations of the orbital inclination and RAAN is proposed. The analysis results show that the LBSAR orbit determination in terms of the position and velocity determinations is most strenuous in the z-direction. Deep learning has powerful feature extraction abilities and has achieved promising results in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification. However, the labeled samples of PolSAR images are generally limited, which could lead to the overfitting of deep networks and the inefficiency of deep features. To overcome this problem, in this article, we propose a complex-valued enforcing population and lifetime sparsity (CV-EPLS) model to extract nonredundant sparse features from PolSAR images. CV-EPLS achieves unsupervised learning of sparse polarimetric features with limited and unlabeled samples, including amplitude and phase information in multiple polarimetric channels. Concretely, CV-EPLS defines an activation metric function to achieve strong population sparsity. Additionally, a grid search strategy is designed to ensure that activation items are evenly distributed among the sparse targets, thus forming strong lifetime sparsity. In this way, CV-EPLS constructs the complex sparse matrices and extracts discriminative sparse features in an unsupervised way, with the dependence of features being effectively reduced. River water extent is critical for understanding river discharge or its hydrological conditions. Although numerous methods have been proposed to map river water from either optical or synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remotely sensed images, uncertainties still exist broadly. In this study, we developed an image fusion method that integrates Landsat-8, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 images simultaneously for river water mapping with two major steps. Firstly, a posterior probability support vector machine (SVM) model was adopted to generate water probability maps from each individual image; and second, a multidimensional weighted fusion method (MDWFM) was developed to fuse these probability maps. Four reaches with different characteristics were selected as case study sites. High-resolution aerial images were acquired and used as the reference to evaluate our results. We found that the fusion process not only improves the quality of river water mapping but also excludes the cloud interference. The fused river water maps become more reliable after the conflicts from difference images being solved by the proposed MDWFM method that contains a proportional conflict redistribution rule. The weighted root mean square difference was reduced to 0.066, and the area under the ROC curve reached up to 0.984. The critical success index (CSI), kappa coefficient (KC), and F-measure reached up to 0.810, 0.836, and 0.895, respectively. These stable and accurate river extent mapping results obtained through fusing multiple images with high spatial resolution (SR) (10 m) and short revisit interval (0.4–4.4 days) are of great significance for enriching the data and methodology of hydrological studies. The nonlinear variation of viewing angles over a long duration causes a nonlinear initial phase of the received pulse in a passive positioning system with a single moving receiver. Typical positioning systems ignore the phase and perform incoherent accumulation of the long-time data, thus resulting in a decrease in positioning accuracy, especially at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A novel passive positioning system with a synthetic aperture technique, named synthetic aperture positioning (SAP) system, is proposed to resolve the issue. First, a new 2-D continuous sampling working model is proposed. Then, the SAP system and a cost function are given to analyze the positioning performance. Third, a positioning algorithm based on the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is studied to handle the cost function and position the emitter. In recent years, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ship detection methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have attracted wide attention in remote sensing fields. However, these methods require a large number of labeled SAR images to train the network, where labeling for SAR images is more expensive and time-consuming than that for optical images. To address the problem of lacking labeled SAR images, in this article, we proposed an unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) framework based on progressive transfer for SAR ship detection by transferring knowledge from the optical domain to the SAR domain. Due to the prominent difference between the optical and SAR images, our approach progressively transfers knowledge from three levels: pixel level, feature level, and prediction level. At the pixel level, considering the difference in imaging mechanism, we propose a special data augmentation method for ship targets and build the generator with skip connection based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) to generate transition domain, which can reduce the appearance discrepancy between the optical and SAR images. At the feature level, the detector is trained to learn the domain-invariant features with adversarial alignment. At the prediction level, we further use the predicted pseudo-labels obtained by the feature-aligned detector to learn more discriminative features of the SAR images directly and propose the robust self-training (RST) method to reduce the influence of noisy pseudo-labels on detector training. Specially, RST is formulated as a loss minimization problem for object detection. The experimental results based on the domain adaptation from optical dataset to SAR dataset demonstrate that our approach achieves superior SAR ship detection performance with unlabeled SAR images. This article proposes a new synthetic aperture radar (SAR), named as panoramic SAR, based on a combination of linear and rotational SARs, by which a large 360° panoramic view of the observed scene can be reconstructed. First, the system geometry and its imaging process based on the back-projection algorithm (BPA) are presented. The combined movement constitutes a 2-D synthetic aperture, and thus higher imaging resolutions can be obtained. The corresponding resolution analysis and the sampling criteria are discussed accordingly. Then, a novel dynamic piecewise compensation (DPC) algorithm, a recursive imaging process, is proposed to reduce the processing complexity significantly. The imaging implementation and the complexity are also studied respectively. Finally, a prototype of panoramic SAR is built based on an frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar and a moving platform, and the simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the proposed panoramic SAR principle and the DPC algorithm. Unsupervised methods play an essential role in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification, where labeled data are difficult to obtain. However, there is still a large gap between existing unsupervised learning methods and supervised learning methods. Without the semantic constraints of labeled data, pixels within the same category are often misclassified into different categories, leaving the output to be messy. To address the previous issue, this article proposes a fully unsupervised pipeline for training convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The pipeline combines low-level superpixels and high-level CNN semantic features for high-quality pseudolabel generation. It effectively eliminates the misclassified pixels by voting within the superpixel blob while preserving the sharpness of edges. With the training process of the model, the quality of the generated labels is getting improved. Experiments on airborne [experimental airborne SAR system from Germany (ESAR)/airborne synthetic aperture radar from America (AIRSAR)] and spaceborne (RadarSat2) PolSAR images prove the effectiveness of the proposed method (measured with overall accuracy (OA), average accuracy (AA), and Kappa metrics). Our method outperforms the previous unsupervised methods (H/alpha-Wishart, SM-Wishart, FDD-H, DEC, and VQC-CAE) with a large margin and even has comparable performance to the supervised CNN model [fully CNN (FCN)]. Optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image registration is important for multimodal remote sensing image information fusion. Recently, deep matching networks have shown better performances than traditional methods of image matching. However, due to significant differences between optical and SAR images, the performances of existing deep learning methods still need to be further improved. This article proposes a self-distillation feature learning network (SDNet) for optical and SAR image registration, improving performance from network structure and network optimization. First, we explore the impact of different weight-sharing strategies on optical and SAR image matching. Then, we design a partially unshared feature learning network for multimodal image feature learning. It has fewer parameters than the fully unshared network and has more flexibility than the fully shared network. In addition, the limited binary supervised information (matching or nonmatching) is insufficient to train the deep matching networks for optical-SAR image registration. Thus, we propose a self-distillation feature learning method to exploit more similarity information for deep network optimization enhancement, such as the similarity ordering between a series of nonmatching patch pairs. The exploited rich similarity information will significantly enhance network training and improve matching accuracy. Finally, existing deep learning methods brute-force make the matching features of the optical and SAR image patches similar, which will lead to the loss of discriminative information and degeneration of the matching performances. Thus, we build an auxiliary task reconstruction learning to optimize the feature learning network to keep more discriminative information. Differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR) allows for retrieval of ice velocity measurements of high resolution and accuracy. One of the main error sources in DInSAR is the phase unwrapping procedure. Unwrapping errors may be caused by several processes, including shear stresses associated with large motion gradients, which lead to loss of interferometric coherence. In many cases, unwrapping errors reach magnitudes corresponding to velocities of tens or even hundreds of meters per year. Traditional DInSAR implementations include pixel masking based on coherence thresholding; however, such a masking is not always sufficient. Consequently, the state-of-the-art for ice velocity retrievals involves either manual inspection of individual measurements or simply discarding measurements in regions where ice flow exceeds a predefined threshold. Here, we instead apply a masking based on thresholding of a pixel connectivity estimate with respect to a reference point, which aims to detect unwrapping errors based only on the estimated coherence pattern. The method is tested on both simulated and real data Sentinel-1 data from the Greenland Ice Sheet and effectively detects the majority of unwrapping errors (recall of 0.84 for the best performing threshold), although with a relatively low precision (0.52 for the best performing threshold). Importantly, higher magnitude unwrapping errors are associated with lower connectivity values, meaning that undetected errors have a significantly lower magnitude (median of 1.7 m/y, corresponding to a single phase cycle, compared with 40.5 m/y with no masking). In this article, we propose an efficient and generalizable framework based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for multisource remote sensing (RS) data joint classification. While recent methods are mostly based on multistream architectures, we use group convolution (GConv) to construct equivalent network architectures efficiently within a single-stream network. Based on a recent technique called dynamic grouping convolution (DGConv), we further propose a network module named separable DGConv (SepDGConv), to make GConv hyperparameters, and, thus, the overall network architecture, learnable during network training. In the experiments, the proposed method is applied to residual network (ResNet) and UNet, and the adjusted networks are verified on three very diverse benchmark datasets (i.e., Houston2018 data, Berlin data, and MUUFL Gulfport Hyperspectral and LiDAR Airborne Data Set (MUUFL) data). Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed single-stream CNNs, and in particular, SepG-ResNet18 improves the state-of-the-art classification overall accuracy (OA) on hyperspectral–synthetic aperture radar (HS–SAR) Berlin dataset from 62.23% to 68.21%. In the experiments we have two interesting findings. First, using DGConv generally reduces test OA variance. Second, multistream is harmful to model performance if imposed to the first few layers, but becomes beneficial if applied to deeper layers. Altogether, the findings imply that the multistream architecture, instead of being a strictly necessary component in deep learning models for multisource RS data, essentially plays the role of model regularizer. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can provide high-resolution electromagnetic backscattering images of the illuminated area, playing a significant role in various applications. However, achieving focused SAR images is challenging under sparse sampling and phase error conditions. By exploiting the sparsity or compressibility priors, the state-of-the-art sparsity-driven SAR imaging methods can reconstruct images under the condition of sparse sampling. However, the handcrafted priors used in these methods limit the imaging performance, and the iterative solution schemes reduce the computational efficiency. Besides, the measurement inaccuracy introduced by the phase error also degrades the reconstruction performance of the sparsity-driven imaging methods. To address these issues, a deep network for SAR autofocus imaging is proposed, which alternately performs image reconstruction and phase error estimation. When performing image reconstruction, the sparsity-cognizant total least-square (S-TLS) model is introduced to handle the problem of measurement inaccuracy, contributing to robust reconstruction performance under the condition of phase error. During the implementation of the deep network, a feature transform operator is used to realize data-driven prior knowledge learning and overcome the limitations of handcrafted priors. Satellite remote sensing acquisitions are usually processed after downlink to a ground station. The satellite travel time to the ground station adds to the total latency, increasing the time until a user can obtain the processing results. Performing the processing and information extraction onboard of the satellite can significantly reduce this time. In this study, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image formation as well as ship detection and extreme weather detection were implemented in a multiprocessor system on a chip (MPSoC). Processing steps with high computational complexity were ported to run on the programmable logic (PL), achieving significant speed-up by implementing a high degree of parallelization and pipelining as well as efficient memory accesses. Steps with lower complexity run on the processing system (PS), allowing for higher flexibility and reducing the need for resources in the PL. The achieved processing times for an area covering 375 km2 were approximately 4 s for image formation, 16 s for ship detection, and 31 s for extreme weather detection. These developments combined with new downlink concepts for low-rate information data streams show that the provision of satellite remote sensing results to end users in less than 5 min after acquisition is possible using an adequately equipped satellite. The polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (Pol-InSAR) model under P-band observations exhibits vertical structure diversity. Compared with the exponential-based random volume over ground (RVoG) model, the Gaussian vertical backscatter volume over ground (GVBVoG) model expresses a more complex forest vertical structure via introducing more parameters. On account of the influence of topographic fluctuation on the model, this article establishes the sloped Gaussian vertical backscatter volume over ground (SGVBVoG) model by drawing into the terrain slope. Based upon the SGVBVoG model, this article develops the 2-D SGVBVoG (2-D-SGVBVoG) model by defining the structure factor, which effectively reduces the model complexity from three to two dimensions. In the 2-D-SGVBVoG model inversion, in view of the diversity of forest species, age, shape, density, etc., in the natural scene and the variation of specific radar systems, a structure factor prediction scheme relying on machine learning is proposed. In the machine-learning model training, the radar incidence angle and the PDHigh coherence acquired by coherence optimization with terrain phase removal are utilized as the variables for characterizing the structure factor. Ultimately, in the case of fixing structure factor, a geometric inversion process on the complex plane is put forward to extract the forest height. The BIOSAR 2008 P-band Pol-InSAR data validation shows that the proposed method achieves an RMSE of 3.07 m, which is 24.0% better than the three-baseline SRVoG inversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) systems produce high-resolution images of the seabed environment. Moreover, deep learning has demonstrated superior ability in finding robust features for automating imagery analysis. However, the success of deep learning is conditioned on having lots of labeled training data but obtaining generous pixel-level annotations of SAS imagery is often practically infeasible. This challenge has thus far limited the adoption of deep learning methods for SAS segmentation. Algorithms exist to segment SAS imagery in an unsupervised manner, but they lack the benefit of state-of-the-art learning methods and the results present significant room for improvement. In view of the above, we propose a new iterative algorithm for unsupervised SAS image segmentation combining superpixel formation, deep learning, and traditional clustering methods. We call our method iterative deep unsupervised segmentation (IDUS). IDUS is an unsupervised learning framework that can be divided into four main steps: 1) a deep network estimates class assignments; 2) low-level image features from the deep network are clustered into superpixels; 3) superpixels are clustered into class assignments (which we call pseudo-labels) using $k$ -means; and 4) resulting pseudo-labels are used for loss backpropagation of the deep network prediction. These four steps are performed iteratively until convergence. A comparison of IDUS to current state-of-the-art methods on a realistic benchmark dataset for SAS image segmentation demonstrates the benefits of our proposal even as the IDUS incurs a much lower computational burden during inference (actual labeling of a test image). Because our design combines merits of classical superpixel methods with deep learning, practically we demonstrate a very significant benefit in terms of reduced selection bias, i.e., IDUS shows markedly improved robustness against the choice of training images. Finally, we also develop a semi-supervised (SS) extension of IDUS called Iterative Deep SS Segmentation (IDSS) and demonstrate experimentally that it can further enhance performance while outperforming supervised alternatives that exploit the same labeled training imagery. Arc-synthetic aperture radar (ArcSAR) can observe the surrounding ground objects at 360°, with the advantages of a wide imaging range and constant azimuth angular resolution. In this article, based on the stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW), fourth-order Taylor expansion, and the series-inversion method, the accurate phase expression of the 2-D spectrum is derived, and then, the 2-D frequency-domain imaging algorithm (2-D-FDA) for ArcSAR is realized. In the simulation part, the imaging results of 2-D-FDA are compared with the backprojection algorithm (BPA) and Liao’s method, which is the reference for 2-D-FDA. The simulation results show that the 2-D-FDA is more applicable to process the data obtained from the antenna with the beamwidth larger than 70°. The SFCW-ArcSAR system consists of a vector network analyzer (VNA), a rotating platform, two antennas, and a control computer. Then, the system is used for the outdoor experiment. The experimental results of the corner reflector show that the point target analysis of 2-D-FDA is consistent with those of the BPA and theory. Under the system parameters in this article, the measured azimuth angular resolution is 0.0177 radian, the peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR) in the range direction is −12.46 dB, and the range resolution is 0.48 m on the ground-range plane. The imaging results of the real scenario processed by BPA and 2-D-FDA are consistent, and the ArcSAR image agrees with the optical image of the experimental scene. In complex electromagnetic environments, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is severely affected by radio frequency interference (RFI) from other systems, such as ground-based radar, cellular networks, and global positioning systems, and this interference cannot be neglected. Pulse RFI (PRFI), a common form of RFI, can hinder SAR signal processing and image interpretation to varying degrees. The time-domain notch filtering method designed for mitigating PRFI can locate and mitigate the evident PRFI covered in SAR echo data, but it is helpless against PRFI hidden in a strong echo signal. In this article, a three-step approach is proposed to tackle the PRFI problem. In the proposed approach, the first step is to detect and locate PRFI; this is based on eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) and the short-time Fourier transform (STFT). The second step is to notch PRFI, and this is based on a time-domain notch filter. The third step is to recover the notched signal using a novel matrix completion strategy, which integrates with a robust low-rank matrix completion (LRMC) technique—i.e.,the singular value thresholding (SVT) algorithm—and a well-known Lagrange interpolation technique. Multiple-input–multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO-SAR) has extensive application prospects, mainly including the acquisition of multidimensional scattering information, high-resolution and wide-width (HRWS) imaging, and moving target indication (MTI). Its echo separation is the most technical challenge, and so far, the confirmation for orthogonal waveform encoding MIMO-SAR by airborne experiments has not been reported in any literature. Here, an echo separation experiment based on the segmented phase code (SPC) waveforms and an airborne digital beamforming SAR (DBF-SAR) system is demonstrated for the first time. In the experiment, the SPC waveforms are cyclically transmitted within the adjacent pulse repetition intervals (PRIs) to simulate multiple transmitters, and the scattered echoes are received by the 16-channel antennas in elevation at the same time. In the postprocessing, the echo signals of continuous PRIs are added to obtain the mixed echoes, and a detailed echo separation method is adopted. In the method, the mixed echo signals from close arrival angles and far arrival angles are separated by the time shift and weighting, and by the bandpass filtering and DBF technique, respectively. Through the presented method, the mixed echoes of dual-transmit and 16-receive (2T16R) SAR imaging mode are separated and imaged successfully. As a wideband radar system, a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) may conflict with several electromagnetic systems, such as frequency modulation (FM), TV, and other communication systems. These signals, termed as radio frequency interference (RFI), may severely interfere SAR systems from generating a high-resolution image. Numerous previous researches focused on the RFI suppression problem, among which the semiparametric methods have been verified to have the state-of-the-art performance. However, most of the semiparametric methods are computationally expensive and can hardly be used on wide-swath SAR imaging processing. In this article, an efficient semiparametric algorithm is proposed to suppress RFIs via alternating projections. It has comparable performance as the other methods but significantly improves the computational efficiency a lot. It is able to remove both narrowband and wideband RFIs and can be used directly on the Level-1 SAR data. Array interferometric synthetic aperture radar (Array InSAR) has a 3-D resolution capability and solves the layover problem in interferometric SAR (InSAR) by arranging multiple antennas in the cross-orbit direction. Airborne Array InSAR point clouds are obtained from two scans for complete building information in urban areas, resulting in very low overlapping point cloud. The existing methods are difficult to extract the identical features for the registration of Array InSAR point clouds. To this end, a robust registration approach Array InSAR point clouds in urban areas is proposed in this study. The main contribution of this article is raising the theoretically optimal transformation for achieving point cloud registration, considering the constraint from parallel facades of a certain building. Point density estimation is adopted to retain building facade points for initial registration. The facade pairs of a specific building are then matched and divided into two categories by judging whether one contains the concave–convex features or not, for performing rotation rectification and fine shift fixation, respectively. Experimental results of both simulated and real data validate the feasibility and reliability of our approach. For the simulated data, the results reach an average rotation error of about 0.01° and an average translation error of less than 0.8 m. For the real data, two evaluation criteria are designed for the lack of reference data. The results reach an average of 0.4° of the defined angle difference and less 0.8-m distance difference from the source facades center to the normal extension of the target facades. Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mapping by Earth observation satellites has contributed significantly toward a better understanding of the Earth system, such as its hydrosphere or climate. Nevertheless, an increased spatial resolution below 10 km with a radiometric resolution in the range of 2 K–3 K of radiometric data could yield a more complete picture of global hydrological processes and climate change. Operational radiometers, such as SMOS, have already approached prohibitive sizes for spacecraft due to the required large antenna apertures. Therefore, radiometer concepts based on a large number of satellites flying in close proximity (swarms) have been proposed as a possible solution. This article investigates the orbit mechanics of placing a satellite swarm-based motion induced synthetic aperture radiometer (MISAR) in low Earth orbit for Earth observation applications. The aperture synthesis antenna array is formed by a large number of individual antennas on autonomously controlled nanosatellites (deputies) and a correlator antenna in the Y-configuration carried by a chief satellite. The proposed design methodology is based on the optimization of satellite positions within a plane and the subsequent translation of coordinates into initial conditions for general circular orbits (GCOs). This enables a more computationally efficient orbit optimization and ensures the time invariance of the antenna array response. Based on this methodology, simulations have been performed with swarms consisting of up to 96 satellites. Simulations show that the spatial resolution of an aperture synthesis radiometer can be increased to less than 10 km for applications where the requirements on radiometric sensitivity are more relaxed ($\Delta T\sim 3$ K). Finding out and turning off the radio-frequency interference (RFI) sources as many as possible is an important work for synthetic aperture interferometric radiometer (SAIR). While the impact of strong RFIs on reconstructed brightness temperature (BT) image is clearly observable, the presence of low- or moderate-level RFIs is often hard to be aware of, leaving the RFI detection and localization a difficult problem. In this article, an improved RFI detection method is proposed by making use of the point-source ripple to give prominence to the RFIs presented in the SAIR imagery. The method tests based on Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity satellite (SMOS) visibility samples and the performance evaluations by numerical simulations validate the correctness and effectiveness of the developed method. Two-dimensional phase unwrapping (PU) is a classical ill-posed problem in synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR). The traditional algorithmic model-based 2-D PU methods are limited by the Itoh condition, which is from the PU researchers’ experience and has critical challenges under strong phase noises or violent phase changes. Recently, advanced learning-based 2-D PU methods could break through the limitation of the Itoh condition owing to their data-driven frameworks, offering promising results in terms of both the speed and accuracy. The one-step learning-based PU method, as one of the representatives, retrieves the unwrapped phase directly from the wrapped phase through regression. However, the main disadvantage of one-step learning-based PU is that it usually blurs the output unwrapped phase due to its $L_{2}$ loss, that is, it cannot guarantee the congruency between the rewrapped interferometric fringes of the PU solution and the input interferogram. To solve this problem, we propose a one-step 2-D PU method based on the conditional generative adversarial network (referred to as PU-GAN), which treats 2-D PU as an image-to-image translation problem. The generator in PU-GAN can be trained to generate the unwrapped phase through minimizing a $L_{1}$ -norm loss based on a U-Net architecture, while simultaneously the corresponding discriminator can learn an adversarial loss by a structure of Patch-GAN that tries to classify if the output unwrapped phase image is real or fake. Both a theoretical analysis and the experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the representative algorithmic model-based and learning-based 2-D PU methods. This article presents the computation of the backscattered field in simulation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data. We develop an improved Kirchhoff approximation to estimate the surface fields induced by the incident waves. The improved Kirchhoff approximation is a second-order iterative solution of the integral equations governing the targets’ electric and magnetic current densities. In computing the second-order re-radiated fields, we applied the shoot-bouncing-ray (SBR) technique to enhance propagation path tracking efficiency. The geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) was employed to account for the diffraction fields from the edges and wedges, which constitute the total scattered fields collected by SAR in synthetic aperture. As the SAR moves along the azimuth direction, the backscattered signal computation is repeated as the antenna beam crosses the targets. This procedure demands heavy computational resources but requires no priori assumptions of radar cross-sections (RCSs) nor speckle statistics. The raw data is generated as an output signal of the SAR system response into which the backscattered signal is input. We chose three types of the target to demonstrate our approach to confirm the effectiveness. The first set of targets are three dihedral reflectors – two of them were rotated to constitute three unique scattering matrices. The results show that the polarimetric information, both relative amplitudes and phases, are well–preserved. The second target is a rough surface with exponential power spectral density and Gaussian height probability density. We examined image speckle statistics of multi-looking image. The third target type is an electrically large cargo ship (container) sitting over a sea surface. Polarimetric analysis via the Pauli and Y4R decompositions reveals that the polarimetric features are well preserved. Simulation results demonstrate that the present approach is fully coherent in streamlining the data flow from backscattered field to complex single look images within the SAR imaging scene. As one of the most popular topics in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) community, PolSAR image classification has always been an important way for PolSAR applications. Constructing representations is the most critical part of PolSAR image classification. With the maturity of deep learning technique, many data-driven PolSAR representation methods have been proposed, most of which are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Despite some achievements, the bottleneck of CNN-based methods may be related to the locality induced by their inductive biases. Considering this problem, the state-of-the-art method in natural language processing, i.e., transformer, is introduced into PolSAR image classification for the first time. Specifically, a vision transformer (ViT)-based representation learning framework is proposed in this article, which covers both supervised learning and unsupervised learning. For supervised learning, we use self-attention to replace convolution, which shifts the focus from the information in local neighborhoods to the long-range interactions between each pixel. Beyond supervised learning, we introduce an improved contrastive-based strategy to implement simple unsupervised representation learning. Compared with CNN and its variants, ViT constructs more global representations by explicitly modeling the relationship between each pixel, so as to improve the classification performance. Experimental results on four widely used PolSAR image datasets indicate that the representation obtained by the ViT-based methods is better for PolSAR image classification, whether supervised (up to about 5% accuracy improvement) or unsupervised (up to about 4%). Aiming at the problems of low resolution and poor noise suppression for maneuvering targets with traditional inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging algorithms, we propose a motion compensation-driven high-resolution imaging algorithm based on Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) technology. FPM is a phase retrieval technology that uses the concept of synthetic aperture to obtain the high-resolution image of the target. The process of FPM imaging is composed of the enhancement of the known target information in the spatial domain and some fixed restricted alternating iteration in the frequency domain. This article analyzes the mathematical model of maneuvering target echo and then studies the rationality of applying the FPM phase retrieval algorithm to ISAR maneuvering target imaging. The proposed algorithm mainly includes two steps. First, a series of low-resolution ISAR images are generated by sampling echo data through an aperture function. Second, the FPM phase retrieval technology is applied to splice and reconstruct the spectrum of the low-resolution images to achieve the focused ISAR image. The recent local climate zones (LCZ) classification scheme provides spatially fine granular descriptions of inner urban morphology. It is universally applicable to cities worldwide and capable of supporting various urban studies. Although optical and dual-pol synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data continue to push the frontiers of this task, the potential of quad-pol SAR data for LCZ classification is not yet explored. In this article, we propose a novel complex-valued convolutional neural network (CNN), SAR4LCZ-Net, to tackle this challenge. SAR4LCZ-Net improves the state-of-the-art by exploiting two facts of this specific task: the semantic hierarchical structure of the LCZ classification scheme and the complex-valued nature of quad-pol SAR data. To validate the performance of our algorithm, we generate a Chinese Gaofen-3 quad-pol SAR dataset for LCZ which covers 31 cities around the world. Results show that the proposed SAR4LCZ-Net improves 2.4% on overall accuracy (OA) and 4.5% on average accuracy (AA) compared with the real-valued CNN with the same structure. Gaofen-3 quad-pol SAR data also showed its advantage over the dual-pol Sentinel-1 data. In this study, we advance a new family of model-based decompositions adapted for dual-pol synthetic aperture radar data. These are formulated using the Stokes vector formalism, coupled to mappings from full quad-pol decomposition theory. A generalized model-based decomposition is developed, which allows separation of an arbitrary Stokes vector into partially polarized and polarized wave components. We employ the widely used random dipole cloud as a volume model but, in general, nondipole options can be used. The cross-polarized phase $\delta $ , and the $\alpha $ angle, which is a function of the ratio between wave components, measure the transformation of polarization state on reflection. We apply the decomposition to dual-pol data provided by Sentinel-1 (S1) covering different scenarios, such as agricultural, forest, urban, and glacial land-ice. We show that the polarized term of received polarization state is not usually the same as the transmitted one, and can therefore be used for key applications, e.g., classification and geo-physical parameter estimation. We show that, for vegetated terrain, depolarization is not the only influencing factor to S1 backscattered intensities and, in the case of vertical crops (e.g., rice), this allows the crop orientation effects to be decoupled from volume scattering in the canopy. We demonstrate that coherent dual-pol systems show strong phase signatures over glaciers, where the polarized contribution significantly affects the backscattered state, resulting in elliptical polarization on receive. Cross-modal hashing is an important tool for retrieving useful information from very-high-resolution (VHR) optical images and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Dealing with the intermodal discrepancies, including both spatial–spectral and visual semantic aspects, between VHR and SAR images is extremely vital to generate high-quality common hash codes in the Hamming space. However, existing cross-modal hashing methods ignore the spatial–spectral discrepancy when representing VHR and SAR images. Moreover, existing methods employ derived supervised signals, such as pairwise training images, to implicitly guide hashing learning, which fails to effectively deal with the visual semantic discrepancy, i.e., cannot adequately preserve the intraclass similarity and interclass discrimination between VHR and SAR images. To address these drawbacks, this article proposes a multisensor fusion and explicit semantic preserving-based deep Hashing method, termed as MsEspH, which can effectively deal with the discrepancies. Specifically, we design a novel cross-modal hashing network to eliminate the spatial–spectral discrepancies by fusing extra multispectral images (MSIs), which are generated in real time by a generative adversarial network. Then, we propose an explicit semantic preserving-based objective function by analyzing the connection between classification and hash learning. The objective function can preserve the intraclass similarity and interclass discrimination with class labels directly. Moreover, we theoretically verify that hash learning and classification can be unified into a learning framework under certain conditions. To evaluate our method, we construct and release a large-scale VHR-SAR image dataset. Accurate optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image registration is crucial to multisensor remote sensing applications. Though several algorithms have been proposed, the practical implementation that directly matches large and high-resolution optical and SAR images remains underexplored by the community. Equipped with the satellite positioning parameters, optical and SAR images can be roughly registered based on geographic coordinates. However, the relative positioning accuracy is still dozens, even hundreds of pixels due to the inaccuracies of sensor parameters and elevation. Consequently, we propose a robust registration algorithm, which consists of two stages, where the horizontal positioning errors can be reduced in the first stage, and then, we fine-tune the correspondences in the second stage. Specifically, we propose a novel template matching method based on the dilated convolutional feature (DCF) and epipolar-oriented phase correlation. DCF is constructed by a depthwise-separable dilated convolution with multichannel gradients, which are generated by the Sobel operator for optical images and a ratio of exponentially weighted averages (ROEWA) operator for SAR images. Due to the large reception field of dilated convolution, DCF can retain invariance even for large relative positioning errors. The epipolar-oriented rectangle template, which stretches along the epipolar line, is then proposed to capture more overlapping areas compared to square templates. Furthermore, the outlier removal is implemented in the coordinate system of optical images to avoid the effect of range compression in SAR images. Inliers are finally used to refine the rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) based on the bundle adjustment technique. Experimental results on high-resolution optical and SAR image products of various scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed registration framework. In order to more efficiently mine the features of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) and establish a more appropriate classification model, this article proposes an improved convolutional autoencoder (ICAE) based on texture feature fusion (TFF-ICAE) for PolSAR terrain classification. First, TFF-ICAE specifically designs a multi-indicator squeeze-and-excitation (MI-SE) block and incorporates it into the CAE network. MI-SE can enhance the essential feature information while suppressing the interference information as much as possible, and it can effectively increase the between-class distance while reducing the within-class distance. Then, TFF-ICAE uses gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) to capture the texture features, and it optimally fuses these texture features and the deep features extracted by ICAE to complete the multilevel feature fusion, elevating the feature representation completeness of the terrain. That is, TFF-ICAE effectively enhances the feature separation capability of different categories while greatly elevating the feature representation completeness. Experiments on the datasets of San Francisco, Oberpfaffenhofen, and Flevoland show that the proposed TFF-ICAE, respectively, achieves overall accuracies of 93.44%, 97.61%, and 97.78%, which are at least 0.92%, 1.52%, and 0.97% higher than other algorithms. Multiple aperture interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MAI) can measure ground displacements along SAR track. However, MAI measurements may suffer from severe ionospheric error, especially for long-wavelength SAR sensors. This study presents a new approach, azimuth split-spectrum interferometry (AziSSI), to correct ionospheric errors in MAI measurements. The proposed method can straightforwardly resolve ionospheric phase delay by exploiting two subband MAI interferograms with different centroid frequencies. We utilized two groups of ALOS-1 PALSAR images, which cover the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake containing strong coseismic ground deformation and a stable coast region in Chile, respectively, to test the proposed method. Experimental results show that the AziSSI method can successfully recover the coseismic displacements induced by the Wenchuan earthquake and circumvent the azimuth stripes for the Chile case’s MAI measurements. The maximum ionosphere-induced azimuth shifts are about 2.2 m for the Wenchuan case and 2.5 m for the Chile case. We validated the correction performance of the AziSSI method with the Wenchuan case by comparing the compensated azimuth displacements with the simulated deformation from a forward fault slip model and coseismic global positioning system (GPS) measurements. The validations show that the deformation patterns after the ionospheric correction are consistent with the simulations of the sinistral slip of the causative fault. The root-mean-square error between the GPS and MAI measurements is reduced from 0.77 to 0.28 m before and after the ionospheric correction, indicating that AziSSI can significantly compensate ionospheric errors for MAI. Snow water equivalent (SWE) is an important surface parameter for understanding a number of Earth system processes. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has considerable potential for measuring SWE of dry-snow because SAR can penetrate through the snow to the ground surface and is both amplitude- and phase-sensitive to refraction from the snow. Previous work on refraction-based SWE measurement by SAR has utilized the repeat-pass InSAR phase signal to estimate changes in SWE that occur between SAR acquisitions. These are subject to temporal decorrelation effects and consider only the refraction that occurs along the SAR beam center rather than the entire synthetic aperture. This study examines the refractive effect of dry-snow along the synthetic aperture and its impact on SAR image formation including defocusing and phase bias of the system impulse response. Snow phase compensation during time domain processing to recover the snow-free impulse response function (IRF) is described and demonstrated. The feasibility of using the mapdrift and image sharpness autofocus methods to estimate SWE is examined, and the effect of key system parameters on the estimation performance is derived. Experimental validation of the method was conducted by acquiring L-band data with the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Airborne SAR System over a pair of corner reflectors installed on the Kluane icefield in northwestern Canada. Multinode remote sensing imaging loads have long been a fascinating focus of aerial earth observation applications, where the load denotes the device or equipment located on the aircraft for a specific task, such as aerial camera, scanning laser, and synthetic aperture radar. In order to guarantee high-quality imaging, distributed position and orientation system (POS) serves as high accuracy spatio-temporal reference information for remote sensing loads to realize motion compensation. As a result of the working environment, the flexible structure of the wing will suffer the external disturbance, then for distributed POS, the lever arm between the master system below the abdomen and slave system under the wing is time-varying, also the noise disturbance influences markedly on the motion parameters measurement accuracy. Then aiming at the transfer alignment accuracy improvement of distributed POS, a central difference $H_{\infty }$ filtering algorithm is proposed, which adopts the central difference Kalman filtering to realize nonlinear state estimation and $H_\infty $ filtering to suppress the disturbance influence on estimation, then the high accuracy motion parameters can be obtained. We have developed a nonlocal algorithm for estimating polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) covariance matrices on single-look complex (SLC) format resolution. The algorithm is inspired by recent work with guided nonlocal means (NLM) speckle filtering, where a coregistered optical image is used to aid the filtering. Based on patchwise dissimilarities in the SAR and optical domains, we set the weights used for the nonlocal average of the outer product of the lexicographic target vectors that form the estimate. Using this method we show that the estimated covariance matrices preserve the local structure better than previous filtering methods and improve the separation of live from defoliated and dead forest. High-resolution wide-swath synthetic aperture radar (HRWS-SAR) imaging is highly desirable since it allows one to produce high-resolution SAR images of large areas during a short visit time. In this article, staggered coprime pulse repetition frequencies synthetic aperture radar (SCopSAR) is proposed. It divides the time during which a scatterer is illuminated by the antenna beam pattern into two halves where, in each half, pulses are transmitted at the rate of one of two sub-Nyquist pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs). Such PRFs are related to the Nyquist PRF using two coprime subsampling factors. This allows extending the maximum range swath width that can be imaged by a number of times that equals the smaller subsampling factor at the expense of a reduction in the azimuth resolution by half. It further allows for a reduction in the amount of data to be stored and communicated. SCopSAR is an imaging modality suitable for scenes that contain a small number of bright scatterers over a dark background which, for instance, is the case when imaging ships in a calm sea background. Compared with the techniques recently proposed in the literature, SCopSAR simplifies the radar requirements since it uses only one carrier frequency, one waveform, and one channel. During a flooding event, the ability of the terrain to dissipate water flow energy depends on its land-cover type and the associated surface roughness. In this study, we developed a new land-cover classification algorithm using repeat-pass polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data. Through a two-level hierarchical approach, we classified nine land-cover types with distinct surface roughness coefficients (Manning’s $n$). We demonstrated the performance of this algorithm using available L-band ALOS PALSAR scenes acquired between April 2007 and April 2011 over the Houston area. The radar-based surface roughness estimates show a good agreement with those independently derived from NOAA’s 22-class Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) 2010 land-cover classification data. Our algorithm is robust, and the randomly selected training sets only account for 0.3% of the total multilooked radar pixels (30-m spacing). Furthermore, we were able to accurately map surface roughness over the New Orleans area using available ALOS PALSAR scenes without selecting any new training sets. We note that NOAA’s C-CAP data are currently used for estimating surface roughness in the operational storm-surge models, and a new version is typically released every five to six years. With the launch of the L-band NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission in the near future, our algorithm can be used to fill the temporal gaps of the existing C-CAP-based surface roughness database and improve the accuracy of near real-time hydrodynamic modeling. Model-based polarimetric decompositions are often used to generate scene classifications from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) imagery. The classification quality largely depends on whether the adopted polarimetric scattering mechanisms match the major in-scene scattering mechanisms. However, in-scene scattering variations still cause potential mismatches, resulting in unphysical or inaccurate decomposition results. The robustness of model-based polarimetric decompositions remains a general concern. In this article, we address the robustness of model-based polarimetric decomposition to variations of the in-scene scattering mechanisms using simulated datasets. The known simulated scattering mechanisms provide the needed “ground truth” against which we quantitatively evaluate the robustness of polarimetric decompositions. Accurate retrieval of known scattering mechanisms from simulated polarimetric data led us to develop a robust model-based decomposition. We propose a new approach to solve model-based decomposition by employing an $L_{1}$ -regularized optimization procedure, which automatically selects a set of optimal polarimetric scattering mechanisms and guarantees nonnegative powers for the selected scattering mechanisms. We illustrate this $L_{1}$ model decomposition by employing both simulated datasets and actual POLSAR imagery. Our new $L_{1}$ -regularized approach to POLSAR model-based decomposition that mitigates observed biases seen in earlier decompositions provides robust scattering mechanism estimates and eliminates unphysical, negative scattering powers. In this work, we present a new method based on the compressive sensing (CS) theory to correct phase unwrapping (PhU) errors in the multitemporal sequence of interferograms exploited by advanced differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) techniques to generate deformation time series. The developed algorithm estimates the PhU errors by using a modified $L_{1}$ -norm estimator applied to the interferometric network built in the temporal/spatial baseline plane. Indeed, in order to search the minimum $L_{1}$ -norm sparse solution, we apply the iterative reweighted least-squares method with an improved weight function that takes account of the baseline characteristics of the interferometric pairs. Moreover, we also introduce a quality function to identify those solutions that have no physical meaning. Although the proposed approach can be applied to different multitemporal DInSAR approaches, our analysis is tailored to the full-resolution small baseline subset (SBAS) processing chain that we properly modify to implement the proposed CS-based algorithm. To assess the performance of the developed technique, we carry out an extended experimental analysis based on simulated and real SAR data. In particular, we process two wide SAR datasets acquired by Sentinel-1 and COSMO-SkyMed constellations over central Italy between 2011 and 2019. The achieved experimental results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed approach in retrieving PhU errors and generating displacement time series related to strongly nonlinear deformation phenomena. Arc synthetic aperture radar (ArcSAR) is a ground-based remote imaging technology with the ability to cover wide fields of view. However, because its azimuth is formed by scanning angle rotation, the focusing of ArcSAR images is different from classical SAR focusing. Since the existing imaging methods cannot give a good balance between computational efficiency and accuracy, the wavenumber domain algorithm (WMA) could become an interesting alternative. Due to the fact that in ArcSAR imaging, the slant range measurement depends on a sine term of the scanning angle, no dedicated WMA-based approach for ArcSAR imaging has been formulated yet. The main challenge in this context is that the solution of the stationary phase point cannot be resolved explicitly via Fourier transform (FT). This article proposes a new wavenumber domain imaging method, which exploits the sine law in the process of solving the stationary phase point during FT along the direction of the received echo using the triangular relationship formed by the target, the radar, and the rotation center of radar and then obtains the exact phase error expression in range and angular wavenumber domain without any approximation of the slant range or scanning angle. Using this formulation, we develop the corresponding phase error compensation method and complete image focusing. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification is one of the hottest issues in remote sensing, where studies on pixel-level information and relationship are of great significance. In this article, graph convolutional network (GCN) is employed to accomplish this pixel-level task benefiting from its excellent capability in structure exploration and information propagation between different pixels. To reduce the communication burden between various PolSAR pixels and high computational cost for the whole PolSAR image, an adaptive GCN (AdapGCN) consisting of pixel-centered subgraphs is proposed in this article. In the AdapGCN, a data-adaptive kernel and a spatial-adaptive kernel are introduced to, respectively, model data structure and spatial structure for PolSAR image. Moreover, a multiscale learning structure is integrated to further explore complicated relations between pixels. Extensive comparative evaluations validate the superiority of our new AdapGCN model for PolSAR image classification over a wide range of state-of-the-art methods on three challenging benchmarks. This article presents an universal circular synthetic aperture radar (SAR) (UCSAR) by which the targets to be observed at any radial distance can be imaged, thus making SAR imaging possible in a more general scenario with a circular movement of the radar platform. The UCSAR point spread function (PSF) is firstly analyzed based on the time-domain correlation imaging approach, and thus a three-dimension (3-D) spatial variant PSF of the target can be formulated. The closed-form PSF expressions with single-frequency and frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) transmitted signals are derived respectively to quantify the imaging resolutions, showing that the PSF is a product of a sinc function and a zeroth-order Bessel function when using a wideband FMCW signal. Secondly, a fast UCSAR imaging algorithm and its further simplified version are proposed to reduce the computational cost significantly based on the piecewise constant Doppler (PCD) principle. To quantify the imaging performance, we derive an error function of the slant range approximation for the proposed algorithm, serving as a practical guideline for the UCSAR parameter selection. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully developed and used in the classification of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images. However, they often suffer from some problems, such as time-consuming, unsatisfactory detail-preservation, and bad effectiveness given limited training samples. Focusing on these problems, we propose a complex-valued CNN (CV-CNN)-based algorithm for PolSAR image classification in this article. On the one hand, a superpixel-oriented (SPO) scheme is employed to reduce the computational cost of the algorithm and preserve image details simultaneously, which takes superpixels instead of single pixels as classification units. In particular, to meet the input requirement of CV-CNN, three alternative methods of superpixel regularization are designed and compared. On the other hand, considering that both measured data (MD) and manually designed polarimetric features (PFs) have their own advantages, the hybrid data (HD) combining them is employed to drive CV-CNN, which is helpful to improve the effectiveness of the algorithm. We perform experiments on three actual PolSAR image data sets acquired by AIRSAR and Radarsat-2 systems as well as a semisimulated data set. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared to conventional pixel-oriented methods, the proposed SPO scheme is much more time-efficient and is also beneficial to detail preservation. Recent work has demonstrated a passive radio sounding approach that uses the Sun as a source for echo detection and ranging. As the Sun is a moving source with a position that is known a priori, we evaluate this technique’s capabilities to measure the echo’s phase history, map topography, and perform synthetic aperture radar (SAR) focusing. Here, we present our approach to implementing passive SAR using a compact, temporally incoherent radio-astronomical source as a signal of opportunity. We first evaluate the passive system’s capabilities to obtain an echo from a rough surface by determining the critical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for reliably observing the Sun’s echo reflection with our passive instrument. We then demonstrate that our technique can detect the necessary changes in range, phase, and reflectivity of an echo from the Sun. We next present the experimental results of our passive radar testing using the Sun at Dante’s View, Death Valley, to highlight this technique’s ability to perform 2-D imaging. Finally, with synthetic data, we demonstrate that we can use time-domain backprojection to focus a planar white noise signal, perform passive SAR imaging, and improve the measurement’s SNR and azimuth resolution. The results of passive SAR focusing on white noise highlight the potential for the Sun and Jupiter’s radio emissions to perform surface and subsurface imaging for planetary and terrestrial observations.
