Image mosaicking applications require both geometrical and photometrical registrations between the images that compose the mosaic. This paper proposes a probabilistic color correction algorithm for correcting the photometrical disparities. First, the image to be color corrected is segmented into several regions using mean shift. Then, connected regions are extracted using a region fusion algorithm. Local joint image histograms of each region are modeled as collections of truncated Gaussians using a maximum likelihood estimation procedure. Then, local color palette mapping functions are computed using these sets of Gaussians. The color correction is performed by applying those functions to all the regions of the image. An extensive comparison with ten other state of the art color correction algorithms is presented, using two different image pair data sets. Many patch-based image denoising algorithms can be formulated as applying a smoothing filter to the noisy image. Expressed as matrices, the smoothing filters must be row normalized, so that each row sums to unity. Surprisingly, if we apply a column normalization before the row normalization, the performance of the smoothing filter can often be significantly improved. Prior works showed that such performance gain is related to the Sinkhorn–Knopp balancing algorithm, an iterative procedure that symmetrizes a row-stochastic matrix to a doubly stochastic matrix. However, a complete understanding of the performance gain phenomenon is still lacking. In this paper, we study the performance gain phenomenon from a statistical learning perspective. We show that Sinkhorn–Knopp is equivalent to an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm of learning a Gaussian mixture model of the image patches. By establishing the correspondence between the steps of Sinkhorn–Knopp and the EM algorithm, we provide a geometrical interpretation of the symmetrization process. This observation allows us to develop a new denoising algorithm called Gaussian mixture model symmetric smoothing filter (GSF). GSF is an extension of the Sinkhorn–Knopp and is a generalization of the original smoothing filters. Despite its simple formulation, GSF outperforms many existing smoothing filters and has a similar performance compared with several state-of-the-art denoising algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Compressive covariance estimation has arisen as a class of techniques whose aim is to obtain second-order statistics of stochastic processes from compressive measurements. Recently, these methods have been used in various image processing and communications applications, including denoising, spectrum sensing, and compression. Notice that estimating the covariance matrix from compressive samples leads to ill-posed minimizations with severe performance loss at high compression rates. In this regard, a regularization term is typically aggregated to the cost function to consider prior information about a particular property of the covariance matrix. Hence, this paper proposes an algorithm based on the projected gradient method to recover low-rank or Toeplitz approximations of the covariance matrix from compressive measurements. The proposed algorithm divides the compressive measurements into data subsets projected onto different subspaces and accurately estimates the covariance matrix by solving a single optimization problem assuming that each data subset contains an approximation of the signal statistics. Furthermore, gradient filtering is included at every iteration of the proposed algorithm to minimize the estimation error. The error induced by the proposed splitting approach is analytically derived along with the convergence guarantees of the proposed method. The proposed algorithm estimates the covariance matrix of hyperspectral images from synthetic and real compressive samples. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm can effectively recover the covariance matrix of hyperspectral images from compressive measurements with high compression ratios ($8-15\%$ approx) in noisy scenarios. Moreover, simulations and theoretical results show that the filtering step reduces the recovery error up to twice the number of eigenvectors. Mismatch removal is a key step in many computer vision problems that involve point matching. The existing methods for checking geometric consistency mainly focus on similarity or affine transformations. In this paper, we propose a novel mismatch removal method that can cope with the projective transformation between two corresponding point sets. Our approach is based on the augmented homogeneous coordinates matrix constructed from the coordinates of anchor matches, whose degeneracy can indicate the correctness of anchor matches. The set of anchor matches is initially all the matches and is iteratively updated by calculating the difference between the estimated matched points, which can be easily computed in a closed form, and the actually matched points and removing those with large differences. Experimental results on synthetic 2D point matching data sets and real image matching data sets verify that our method achieves the highest $F$ -score among all the methods under similarity, affine, and projective transformations with noises and outliers. Our method can also achieve faster speed than all other iterative methods. Those non-iterative methods with slight advantage in speed are not competitive in accuracy when compared with ours. We also show that the set of anchor matches is stable through the iteration and the computation time grows very slowly with respect to the number of matched points. Blind motion deblurring from a single image is a highly under-constrained problem with many degenerate solutions. A good approximation of the intrinsic image can, therefore, only be obtained with the help of prior information in the form of (often nonconvex) regularization terms for both the intrinsic image and the kernel. While the best choice of image priors is still a topic of ongoing investigation, this research is made more complicated by the fact that historically each new prior requires the development of a custom optimization method. In this paper, we develop a stochastic optimization method for blind deconvolution. Since this stochastic solver does not require the explicit computation of the gradient of the objective function and uses only efficient local evaluation of the objective, new priors can be implemented and tested very quickly. We demonstrate that this framework, in combination with different image priors produces results with Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) values that match or exceed the results obtained by much more complex state-of-the-art blind motion deblurring algorithms. Blind source separation (BSS) aims to discover the underlying source signals from a set of linear mixture signals without any prior information of the mixing system, which is a fundamental problem in signal and image processing field. Most of the state-of-the-art algorithms have independently handled the decompositions of mixture signals. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm named multi-task sparse model to solve the BSS problem. Source signals are characterized via sparse techniques. Meanwhile, we regard the decomposition of each mixture signal as a task and employ the idea of multi-task learning to discover connections between tasks for the accuracy improvement of the source signal separation. Theoretical analyses on the optimization convergence and sample complexity of the proposed algorithm are provided. Experimental results based on extensive synthetic and real-world data demonstrate the necessity of exploiting connections between mixture signals and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Dictionary-based super-resolution (SR) algorithms usually select dictionary atoms based on the distance or similarity metrics. Although the optimal selection of the nearest neighbors is of central importance for such methods, the impact of using proper metrics for SR has been overlooked in literature, mainly due to the vast usage of Euclidean distance. In this paper, we present a very fast regression-based algorithm, which builds on the densely populated anchored neighborhoods and sublinear search structures. We perform a study of the nature of the features commonly used for SR, observing that those features usually lie in the unitary hypersphere, where every point has a diametrically opposite one, i.e., its antipode, with same module and angle, but the opposite direction. Even though, we validate the benefits of using antipodally invariant metrics, most of the binary splits use Euclidean distance, which does not handle antipodes optimally. In order to benefit from both the worlds, we propose a simple yet effective antipodally invariant transform that can be easily included in the Euclidean distance calculation. We modify the original spherical hashing algorithm with this metric in our antipodally invariant spherical hashing scheme, obtaining the same performance as a pure antipodally invariant metric. We round up our contributions with a novel feature transform that obtains a better coarse approximation of the input image thanks to iterative backprojection. Vehicle lane-level localization is a fundamental technology in autonomous driving. To achieve accurate and consistent performance, a common approach is to use the LIDAR technology. However, it is expensive and computational demanding, and thus not a practical solution in many situations. This paper proposes a stereovision system, which is of low cost, yet also able to achieve high accuracy and consistency. It integrates a new lane line detection algorithm with other lane marking detectors to effectively identify the correct lane line markings. It also fits multiple road models to improve accuracy. An effective stereo 3D reconstruction method is proposed to estimate vehicle localization. The estimation consistency is further guaranteed by a new particle filter framework, which takes vehicle dynamics into account. Experiment results based on image sequences taken under different visual conditions showed that the proposed system can identify the lane line markings with 98.6% accuracy. The maximum estimation error of the vehicle distance to lane lines is 16 cm in daytime and 26 cm at night, and the maximum estimation error of its moving direction with respect to the road tangent is 0.06 rad in daytime and 0.12 rad at night. During recent years, blind image quality assessment (BIQA) has been intensively studied with different machine learning tools. Existing BIQA metrics, however, do not design for stereoscopic images. We believe this problem can be resolved by separating 3D images and capturing the essential attributes of images via deep neural network. In this paper, we propose a blind deep quality evaluator (DQE) for stereoscopic images (denoted by 3D-DQE) based on monocular and binocular interactions. The key technical steps in the proposed 3D-DQE are to train two separate 2D deep neural networks (2D-DNNs) from 2D monocular images and cyclopean images to model the process of monocular and binocular quality predictions, and combine the measured 2D monocular and cyclopean quality scores using different weighting schemes. Experimental results on four public 3D image quality assessment databases demonstrate that in comparison with the existing methods, the devised algorithm achieves high consistent alignment with subjective assessment. This paper presents a new Bayesian model and algorithm used for depth and reflectivity profiling using full waveforms from the time-correlated single-photon counting measurement in the limit of very low photon counts. The proposed model represents each Lidar waveform as a combination of a known impulse response, weighted by the target reflectivity, and an unknown constant background, corrupted by Poisson noise. Prior knowledge about the problem is embedded through prior distributions that account for the different parameter constraints and their spatial correlation among the image pixels. In particular, a gamma Markov random field (MRF) is used to model the joint distribution of the target reflectivity, and a second MRF is used to model the distribution of the target depth, which are both expected to exhibit significant spatial correlations. An adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is then proposed to perform Bayesian inference. This algorithm is equipped with a stochastic optimization adaptation mechanism that automatically adjusts the parameters of the MRFs by maximum marginal likelihood estimation. In this paper, we propose an extremely efficient algorithm for visual re-ranking. By considering the original pairwise distance in the contextual space, we develop a feature vector called sparse contextual activation (SCA) that encodes the local distribution of an image. Hence, re-ranking task can be simply accomplished by vector comparison under the generalized Jaccard metric, which has its theoretical meaning in the fuzzy set theory. In order to improve the time efficiency of re-ranking procedure, inverted index is successfully introduced to speed up the computation of generalized Jaccard metric. As a result, the average time cost of re-ranking for a certain query can be controlled within 1 ms. Furthermore, inspired by query expansion, we also develop an additional method called local consistency enhancement on the proposed SCA to improve the retrieval performance in an unsupervised manner. On the other hand, the retrieval performance using a single feature may not be satisfactory enough, which inspires us to fuse multiple complementary features for accurate retrieval. Based on SCA, a robust feature fusion algorithm is exploited that also preserves the characteristic of high time efficiency. We assess our proposed method in various visual re-ranking tasks. Experimental results on Princeton shape benchmark (3D object), WM-SRHEC07 (3D competition), YAEL data set B (face), MPEG-7 data set (shape), and Ukbench data set (image) manifest the effectiveness and efficiency of SCA. There exist a significant number of benchmarks for evaluating the performance of boundary detection algorithms, most of them relying on some sort of comparison of the automatically-generated boundaries with human-labeled ones. Such benchmarks are composed of a representative image data set, as well as a comparison measure on the universe of boundary images. Despite many such data sets and measures have been proposed, there is no clear way of knowing which combinations of them are the most suitable for the task. In this paper, we introduce four criteria that allow for a sensible evaluation of the performance of a comparison measure on a given data set. The criteria mimic the way in which humans understand boundary images, as well as their ability to recognize the underlying scenes. These criteria can, as a final goal, quantify the ability of the boundary detection benchmarks to evaluate the performance of boundary detection methods, either edge-based or segmentation-based. We propose a simple yet effective structural patch decomposition approach for multi-exposure image fusion (MEF) that is robust to ghosting effect. We decompose an image patch into three conceptually independent components: signal strength, signal structure, and mean intensity. Upon fusing these three components separately, we reconstruct a desired patch and place it back into the fused image. This novel patch decomposition approach benefits MEF in many aspects. First, as opposed to most pixel-wise MEF methods, the proposed algorithm does not require post-processing steps to improve visual quality or to reduce spatial artifacts. Second, it handles RGB color channels jointly, and thus produces fused images with more vivid color appearance. Third and most importantly, the direction of the signal structure component in the patch vector space provides ideal information for ghost removal. It allows us to reliably and efficiently reject inconsistent object motions with respect to a chosen reference image without performing computationally expensive motion estimation. We compare the proposed algorithm with 12 MEF methods on 21 static scenes and 12 deghosting schemes on 19 dynamic scenes (with camera and object motion). Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only outperforms previous MEF algorithms on static scenes but also consistently produces high quality fused images with little ghosting artifacts for dynamic scenes. Fine-grained image categorization is a challenging task aiming at distinguishing objects belonging to the same basic-level category, e.g., leaf or mushroom. It is a useful technique that can be applied for species recognition, face verification, and so on. Most of the existing methods either have difficulties to detect discriminative object components automatically, or suffer from the limited amount of training data in each sub-category. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a new fine-grained image categorization model. The key is a dense graph mining algorithm that hierarchically localizes discriminative object parts in each image. More specifically, to mimic the human hierarchical perception mechanism, a superpixel pyramid is generated for each image. Thereby, graphlets from each layer are constructed to seamlessly capture object components. Intuitively, graphlets representative to each super-/sub-category is densely distributed in their feature space. Thus, a dense graph mining algorithm is developed to discover graphlets representative to each super-/sub-category. Finally, the discovered graphlets from pairwise images are integrated into an image kernel for fine-grained recognition. Theoretically, the learned kernel can generalize several state-of-the-art image kernels. Experiments on nine image sets demonstrate the advantage of our method. In this paper, we present a novel approach to automatic 3D facial landmarking using 2D Gabor wavelets. Our algorithm considers the face to be a surface and uses map projections to derive 2D features from raw data. Extracted features include texture, relief map, and transformations thereof. We extend an established 2D landmarking method for simultaneous evaluation of these data. The method is validated by performing landmarking experiments on two data sets using 21 landmarks and compared with an active shape model implementation. On average, landmarking error for our method was 1.9 mm, whereas the active shape model resulted in an average landmarking error of 2.3 mm. A second study investigating facial shape heritability in related individuals concludes that automatic landmarking is on par with manual landmarking for some landmarks. Our algorithm can be trained in 30 min to automatically landmark 3D facial data sets of any size, and allows for fast and robust landmarking of 3D faces. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper, we propose a new video inpainting method which applies to both static or free-moving camera videos. The method can be used for object removal, error concealment, and background reconstruction applications. To limit the computational time, a frame is inpainted by considering a small number of neighboring pictures which are grouped into a group of pictures (GoP). More specifically, to inpaint a frame, the method starts by aligning all the frames of the GoP. This is achieved by a region-based homography computation method which allows us to strengthen the spatial consistency of aligned frames. Then, from the stack of aligned frames, an energy function based on both spatial and temporal coherency terms is globally minimized. This energy function is efficient enough to provide high quality results even when the number of pictures in the GoP is rather small, e.g. 20 neighboring frames. This drastically reduces the algorithm complexity and makes the approach well suited for near real-time video editing applications as well as for loss concealment applications. Single-sensor imaging using the Bayer color filter array (CFA) and demosaicking is well established for current compact and low-cost color digital cameras. An extension from the CFA to a multispectral filter array (MSFA) enables us to acquire a multispectral image in one shot without increased size or cost. However, multispectral demosaicking for the MSFA has been a challenging problem because of very sparse sampling of each spectral band in the MSFA. In this paper, we propose a high-performance multispectral demosaicking algorithm, and at the same time, a novel MSFA pattern that is suitable for our proposed algorithm. Our key idea is the use of the guided filter to interpolate each spectral band. To generate an effective guide image, in our proposed MSFA pattern, we maintain the sampling density of the $G$ -band as high as the Bayer CFA, and we array each spectral band so that an adaptive kernel can be estimated directly from raw MSFA data. Given these two advantages, we effectively generate the guide image from the most densely sampled $G$ -band using the adaptive kernel. In the experiments, we demonstrate that our proposed algorithm with our proposed MSFA pattern outperforms existing algorithms and provides better color fidelity compared with a conventional color imaging system with the Bayer CFA. Space-filling curves have been found useful for many applications in diverse fields. A space-filling curve is a path in a 2^r\!\times 2^r raster domain, which visits each location exactly once. In mathematical terms, space-filling curves linearize a 2D integer space, bijectively mapping the space to the integer line. An algorithm is presented, which generates a large number of space-filling curves/spatial orders. Functions are derived such that the code of each location can be calculated from its coordinates and, conversely, a location code can be decoded to yield the coordinates. The algorithm first generates generate $4\times 4$ spatial orders; they subsequently may be scaled up to any desired domain of size 2^{r}\times 2^{r} . The underlying theory of the algorithm, the processes for scaling up, encoding, and decoding are described in detail. Image retargeting technology has been widely studied to adapt images for the devices with heterogeneous screen resolutions. Meanwhile effective objective retargeting quality assessment algorithms are also very important for optimizing and selecting favorable retargeting methods. Unlike previous assessment algorithms which rely on image local structure features and unidirectional prediction of information loss, we propose a bi-directional natural salient scene distortion model (BNSSD) including image natural scene statistics (NSS) measurement, salient global structure distortion measurement, and bi-directional salient information loss measurement. First, we propose a new NSS model in log-Gabor domain and verify its effectiveness in reflecting nature scene statistical distortions introduced during the retargeting process. Second, the concept of salient global structure distortion is proposed to measure the global structure uniformity in the corresponding salient regions between original and retargeted images. Finally, we propose a bidirectional salient information loss metric to measure the information loss between salient areas in original image and retargeted image. The effectiveness of the BNSSD model is verified on two widely recognized public databases, and the experimental results show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms under different statistical assessment criteria. We introduce a novel edge tracing algorithm using Gaussian process regression. Our edge-based segmentation algorithm models an edge of interest using Gaussian process regression and iteratively searches the image for edge pixels in a recursive Bayesian scheme. This procedure combines local edge information from the image gradient and global structural information from posterior curves, sampled from the model’s posterior predictive distribution, to sequentially build and refine an observation set of edge pixels. This accumulation of pixels converges the distribution to the edge of interest. Hyperparameters can be tuned by the user at initialisation and optimised given the refined observation set. This tunable approach does not require any prior training and is not restricted to any particular type of imaging domain. Due to the model’s uncertainty quantification, the algorithm is robust to artefacts and occlusions which degrade the quality and continuity of edges in images. Our approach also has the ability to efficiently trace edges in image sequences by using previous-image edge traces as a priori information for consecutive images. Selective segmentation methods involve incorporating user input to partition an image into a foreground and background. These methods are often sensitive to some aspect of the user input in a counter intuitive manner, making their use in practice difficult. The most robust methods often involve laborious refinement on the part of the user, and sometimes editing/supervision. The proposed method reduces the burden of the user by simplifying the requirements in the input. Specifically, the fitting term does not depend on a distance function, and so no selection parameter is introduced. Instead, we consider how the user input relates to some general intensity fitting term to ensure the approach is less sensitive to the decisions or intuition of the user. We propose novel convolutional sparse and low-rank coding-based methods for cartoon and texture decomposition. In our method, we first learn a set of generic filters that can efficiently represent cartoon-and texture-type images. Then, using these learned filters, we propose two optimization frameworks to decompose a given image into cartoon and texture components: convolutional sparse coding-based image decomposition; and convolutional low-rank coding-based image decomposition. By working directly on the whole image, the proposed image separation algorithms do not need to divide the image into overlapping patches for leaning local dictionaries. The shift-invariance property is directly modeled into the objective function for learning filters.
