Recent research advances in salient object detection (SOD) could largely be attributed to ever-stronger multi-scale feature representation empowered by the deep learning technologies. The existing SOD deep models extract multi-scale features via the off-the-shelf encoders and combine them smartly via various delicate decoders. However, the kernel sizes in this commonly-used thread are usually “fixed”. In our new experiments, we have observed that kernels of small size are preferable in scenarios containing tiny salient objects. In contrast, large kernel sizes could perform better for images with large salient objects. Inspired by this observation, we advocate the “dynamic” scale routing (as a brand-new idea) in this paper. It will result in a generic plug-in that could directly fit the existing feature backbone. This paper’s key technical innovations are two-fold. First, instead of using the vanilla convolution with fixed kernel sizes for the encoder design, we propose the dynamic pyramid convolution (DPConv), which dynamically selects the best-suited kernel sizes w.r.t. the given input. Second, we provide a self-adaptive bidirectional decoder design to accommodate the DPConv-based encoder best. The most significant highlight is its capability of routing between feature scales and their dynamic collection, making the inference process scale-aware. Previous 2D saliency detection methods extract salient cues from a single view and directly predict the expected results. Both traditional and deep-learning-based 2D methods do not consider geometric information of 3D scenes. Therefore the relationship between scene understanding and salient objects cannot be effectively established. This limits the performance of 2D saliency detection in challenging scenes. In this paper, we show for the first time that saliency detection problem can be reformulated as two sub-problems: light field synthesis from a single view and light-field-driven saliency detection. This paper first introduces a high-quality light field synthesis network to produce reliable 4D light field information. Then a novel light-field-driven saliency detection network is proposed, in which a Direction-specific Screening Unit (DSU) is tailored to exploit the spatial correlation among multiple viewpoints. The whole pipeline can be trained in an end-to-end fashion. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art 2D, 3D and 4D saliency detection methods. Learning-based infrared small object detection methods currently rely heavily on the classification backbone network. This tends to result in tiny object loss and feature distinguishability limitations as the network depth increases. Furthermore, small objects in infrared images are frequently emerged bright and dark, posing severe demands for obtaining precise object contrast information. For this reason, we in this paper propose a simple and effective “U-Net in U-Net” framework, UIU-Net for short, and detect small objects in infrared images. As the name suggests, UIU-Net embeds a tiny U-Net into a larger U-Net backbone, enabling the multi-level and multi-scale representation learning of objects. Moreover, UIU-Net can be trained from scratch, and the learned features can enhance global and local contrast information effectively. More specifically, the UIU-Net model is divided into two modules: the resolution-maintenance deep supervision (RM-DS) module and the interactive-cross attention (IC-A) module. RM-DS integrates Residual U-blocks into a deep supervision network to generate deep multi-scale resolution-maintenance features while learning global context information. Further, IC-A encodes the local context information between the low-level details and high-level semantic features. Extensive experiments conducted on two infrared single-frame image datasets, i.e., SIRST and Synthetic datasets, show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed UIU-Net in comparison with several state-of-the-art infrared small object detection methods. Benefiting from color independence, illumination invariance and location discrimination attributed by the depth map, it can provide important supplemental information for extracting salient objects in complex environments. However, high-quality depth sensors are expensive and can not be widely applied. While general depth sensors produce the noisy and sparse depth information, which brings the depth-based networks with irreversible interference. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-task and multi-modal filtered transformer (MMFT) network for RGB-D salient object detection (SOD). Specifically, we unify three complementary tasks: depth estimation, salient object detection and contour estimation. The multi-task mechanism promotes the model to learn the task-aware features from the auxiliary tasks. In this way, the depth information can be completed and purified. Moreover, we introduce a multi-modal filtered transformer (MFT) module, which equips with three modality-specific filters to generate the transformer-enhanced feature for each modality. The proposed model works in a depth-free style during the testing phase. Experiments show that it not only significantly surpasses the depth-based RGB-D SOD methods on multiple datasets, but also precisely predicts a high-quality depth map and salient contour at the same time. As an important field in information retrieval, fine-grained cross-modal retrieval has received great attentions from researchers. Existing fine-grained cross-modal retrieval methods made several improvements in capturing the fine-grained interplay between vision and language, failing to consider the fine-grained correspondences between the features in the image latent space and the text latent space respectively, which may lead to inaccurate inference of intra-modal relations or false alignment of cross-modal information. Considering that object detection can get the fine-grained correspondences of image region features and the corresponding semantic features, this paper proposed a novel latent space semantic supervision model based on knowledge distillation (L3S-KD), which trains classifiers supervised by the fine-grained correspondences obtained from an object detection model by using knowledge distillation for image latent space fine-grained alignment, and by the labels of objects and attributes for text latent space fine-grained alignment. Compared with existing fine-grained correspondence matching methods, L3S-KD can learn more accurate semantic similarities for local fragments in image-text pairs. Modern top-performing object detectors depend heavily on backbone networks, whose advances bring consistent performance gains through exploring more effective network structures. In this paper, we propose a novel and flexible backbone framework, namely CBNet, to construct high-performance detectors using existing open-source pre-trained backbones under the pre-training fine-tuning paradigm. In particular, CBNet architecture groups multiple identical backbones, which are connected through composite connections. Specifically, it integrates the high- and low-level features of multiple identical backbone networks and gradually expands the receptive field to more effectively perform object detection. We also propose a better training strategy with auxiliary supervision for CBNet-based detectors. CBNet has strong generalization capabilities for different backbones and head designs of the detector architecture. Without additional pre-training of the composite backbone, CBNet can be adapted to various backbones (i.e., CNN-based vs. Transformer-based) and head designs of most mainstream detectors (i.e., one-stage vs. two-stage, anchor-based vs. anchor-free-based). Experiments provide strong evidence that, compared with simply increasing the depth and width of the network, CBNet introduces a more efficient, effective, and resource-friendly way to build high-performance backbone networks. Particularly, our CB-Swin-L achieves 59.4% box AP and 51.6% mask AP on COCO test-dev under the single-model and single-scale testing protocol, which are significantly better than the state-of-the-art results (i.e., 57.7% box AP and 50.2% mask AP) achieved by Swin-L, while reducing the training time by $6\times $. With multi-scale testing, we push the current best single model result to a new record of 60.1% box AP and 52.3% mask AP without using extra training data. Camouflaged object detection (COD) aims to detect/segment camouflaged objects embedded in the environment, which has attracted increasing attention over the past decades. Although several COD methods have been developed, they still suffer from unsatisfactory performance due to the intrinsic similarities between the foreground objects and background surroundings. In this paper, we propose a novel Feature Aggregation and Propagation Network (FAP-Net) for camouflaged object detection. Specifically, we propose a Boundary Guidance Module (BGM) to explicitly model the boundary characteristic, which can provide boundary-enhanced features to boost the COD performance. To capture the scale variations of the camouflaged objects, we propose a Multi-scale Feature Aggregation Module (MFAM) to characterize the multi-scale information from each layer and obtain the aggregated feature representations. Furthermore, we propose a Cross-level Fusion and Propagation Module (CFPM). In the CFPM, the feature fusion part can effectively integrate the features from adjacent layers to exploit the cross-level correlations, and the feature propagation part can transmit valuable context information from the encoder to the decoder network via a gate unit. Finally, we formulate a unified and end-to-end trainable framework where cross-level features can be effectively fused and propagated for capturing rich context information. Extensive experiments on three benchmark camouflaged datasets demonstrate that our FAP-Net outperforms other state-of-the-art COD models. Moreover, our model can be extended to the polyp segmentation task, and the comparison results further validate the effectiveness of the proposed model in segmenting polyps. Recently, the Part-Object Relational (POR) saliency underpinned by the Capsule Network (CapsNet) has been demonstrated to be an effective modeling mechanism to improve the saliency detection accuracy. However, it is widely known that the current capsule routing operations have huge computational complexity, which seriously limited the usability of the POR saliency models in real-time applications. To this end, this paper takes an early step towards a fast POR saliency inference by proposing a novel disentangled part-object relational network. Concretely, we disentangle horizontal routing and vertical routing from the original omnidirectional capsule routing, thus generating Disentangled Capsule Routing (DCR). This mechanism enjoys two advantages. On one hand, DCR that disentangles orthogonal 1D (i.e., vertical and horizontal) routing greatly reduces parameters and routing complexity, resulting in much faster inference than omnidirectional 2D routing adopted by existing CapsNets. On the other hand, thanks to the light POR cues explored by DCR, we could conveniently integrate the part-object routing process to different feature layers in CNN, rather than just applying it to the small-scaled one as in previous works. Most existing salient object detection (SOD) methods are designed for RGB images and do not take advantage of the abundant information provided by light fields. Hence, they may fail to detect salient objects of complex structures and delineate their boundaries. Although some methods have explored multi-view information of light field images for saliency detection, they require tedious pixel-level manual annotations of ground truths. In this paper, we propose a novel weakly-supervised learning framework for salient object detection on light field images based on bounding box annotations. Our method has two major novelties. First, given an input light field image and a bounding-box annotation indicating the salient object, we propose a ground truth label hallucination method to generate a pixel-level pseudo saliency map, to avoid heavy cost of pixel-level annotations. This method generates high quality pseudo ground truth saliency maps to help supervise the training, by exploiting information obtained from the light field (including depths and RGB images). Second, to exploit the multi-view nature of the light field data in learning, we propose a fusion attention module to calibrate the spatial and channel-wise light field representations. It learns to focus on informative features and suppress redundant information from the multi-view inputs. Based on these two novelties, we are able to train a new salient object detector with two branches in a weakly-supervised manner. While the RGB branch focuses on modeling the color contrast in the all-in-focus image for locating the salient objects, the Focal branch exploits the depth and the background spatial redundancy of focal slices for eliminating background distractions. Most existing RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) methods are primarily focusing on cross-modal and cross-level saliency fusion, which has been proved to be efficient and effective. However, these methods still have a critical limitation, i.e., their fusion patterns – typically the combination of selective characteristics and its variations, are too highly dependent on the network’s non-linear adaptability. In such methods, the balances between RGB and D (Depth) are formulated individually considering the intermediate feature slices, but the relation at the modality level may not be learned properly. The optimal RGB-D combinations differ depending on the RGB-D scenarios, and the exact complementary status is frequently determined by multiple modality-level factors, such as D quality, the complexity of the RGB scene, and degree of harmony between them. Therefore, given the existing approaches, it may be difficult for them to achieve further performance breakthroughs, as their methodologies belong to some methods that are somewhat less modality sensitive. To conquer this problem, this paper presents the Modality-aware Decoder (MaD). The critical technical innovations include a series of feature embedding, modality reasoning, and feature back-projecting and collecting strategies, all of which upgrade the widely-used multi-scale and multi-level decoding process to be modality-aware. Our MaD achieves competitive performance over other state-of-the-art (SOTA) models without using any fancy tricks in the decoder’s design. Recent one-stage object detectors follow a per-pixel prediction approach that predicts both the object category scores and boundary positions from every single grid location. However, the most suitable positions for inferring different targets, i.e., the object category and boundaries, are generally different. Predicting all these targets from the same grid location thus may lead to sub-optimal results. In this paper, we analyze the suitable inference positions for object category and boundaries, and propose a prediction-target-decoupled detector named PDNet to establish a more flexible detection paradigm. Our PDNet with the prediction decoupling mechanism encodes different targets separately in different locations. A learnable prediction collection module is devised with two sets of dynamic points, i.e., dynamic boundary points and semantic points, to collect and aggregate the predictions from the favorable regions for localization and classification. We adopt a two-step strategy to learn these dynamic point positions, where the prior positions are estimated for different targets first, and the network further predicts residual offsets to the positions with better perceptions of the object properties. Extensive experiments on the MS COCO benchmark demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. With a single ResNeXt- $64{\times }4\text{d}$ -101-DCN as the backbone, our detector achieves 50.1 AP with single-scale testing, which outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by an appreciable margin under the same experimental settings. RGB-D co-salient object detection aims to segment co-occurring salient objects when given a group of relevant images and depth maps. Previous methods often adopt separate pipeline and use hand-crafted features, being hard to capture the patterns of co-occurring salient objects and leading to unsatisfactory results. Using end-to-end CNN models is a straightforward idea, but they are less effective in exploiting global cues due to the intrinsic limitation. Thus, in this paper, we alternatively propose an end-to-end transformer-based model which uses class tokens to explicitly capture implicit class knowledge to perform RGB-D co-salient object detection, denoted as CTNet. Specifically, we first design adaptive class tokens for individual images to explore intra-saliency cues and then develop common class tokens for the whole group to explore inter-saliency cues. Besides, we also leverage the complementary cues between RGB images and depth maps to promote the learning of the above two types of class tokens. In addition, to promote model evaluation, we construct a challenging and large-scale benchmark dataset, named RGBD CoSal1k, which collects 106 groups containing 1000 pairs of RGB-D images with complex scenarios and diverse appearances. The practical task of Automatic Check-Out (ACO) is to accurately predict the presence and count of each product in an arbitrary product combination. Beyond the large-scale and the fine-grained nature of product categories as its main challenges, products are always continuously updated in realistic check-out scenarios, which is also required to be solved in an ACO system. Previous work in this research line almost depends on the supervisions of labor-intensive bounding boxes of products by performing a detection paradigm. While, in this paper, we propose a Self-Supervised Multi-Category Counting (S2MC2) network to leverage the point-level supervisions of products in check-out images to both lower the labeling cost and be able to return ACO predictions in a class incremental setting. Specifically, as a backbone, our S2MC2 is built upon a counting module in a class-agnostic counting fashion. Also, it consists of several crucial components including an attention module for capturing fine-grained patterns and a domain adaptation module for reducing the domain gap between single product images as training and check-out images as test. Furthermore, a self-supervised approach is utilized in S2MC2 to initialize the parameters of its backbone for better performance. By conducting comprehensive experiments on the large-scale automatic check-out dataset RPC, we demonstrate that our proposed S2MC2 achieves superior accuracy in both traditional and incremental settings of ACO tasks over the competing baselines. Object detection is usually solved by learning a deep architecture involving classification and localization tasks, where feature learning for these two tasks is shared using the same backbone model. Recent works have shown that suitable disentanglement of classification and localization tasks has the great potential to improve performance of object detection. Despite the promising performance, existing feature disentanglement methods usually suffer from two limitations. First, most of them only focus on the disentangled proposals or predication heads for classification and localization tasks after RPN. While little consideration has been given to that the features for these two different tasks actually are obtained by a shared backbone model before RPN. Second, they are suggested for two-stage objectors and are not applicable to one-stage methods. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents a novel fully task-specific feature learning method for one-stage object detection. Specifically, our method first learns disentangled features for classification and localization tasks using two separated backbone models, where auxiliary classification and localization heads are inserted at the end of the two backbone models for providing a fully task-specific features for classification and localization. Then, a feature interaction module is developed for aligning and fusing task-specific features, which are further used to produce the final detection result. Experiments on MS COCO show that our proposed method (dubbed CrabNet) can achieve clear improvement over counterparts with increasing limited inference time, while performing favorably against state-of-the-arts. Recently, many arbitrary-oriented object detection (AOOD) methods have been proposed and attracted widespread attention in many fields. However, most of them are based on anchor-boxes or standard Gaussian heatmaps. Such label assignment strategy may not only fail to reflect the shape and direction characteristics of arbitrary-oriented objects, but also have high parameter-tuning efforts. In this paper, a novel AOOD method called General Gaussian Heatmap Label Assignment (GGHL) is proposed. Specifically, an anchor-free object-adaptation label assignment (OLA) strategy is presented to define the positive candidates based on two-dimensional (2D) oriented Gaussian heatmaps, which reflect the shape and direction features of arbitrary-oriented objects. Based on OLA, an oriented-bounding-box (OBB) representation component (ORC) is developed to indicate OBBs and adjust the Gaussian center prior weights to fit the characteristics of different objects adaptively through neural network learning. Moreover, a joint-optimization loss (JOL) with area normalization and dynamic confidence weighting is designed to refine the misalign optimal results of different subtasks. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate that the proposed GGHL improves the AOOD performance with low parameter-tuning and time costs. Multi-class object detection in remote sensing images plays an important role in many applications but remains a challenging task because of scale imbalance and arbitrary orientations of the objects with extreme aspect ratios. In this paper, the Asymmetric Feature Pyramid Network (AFPN), Dynamic Feature Alignment (DFA) module, and Area-IoU regression loss are proposed on the basis of a one-stage cascaded detection method for the detection of multi-class objects with arbitrary orientations in remote sensing images. The designed asymmetric convolutional block is embedded into the AFPN for handling objects with extreme aspect ratios and improving the space representation with ignorable increases in calculation. The DFA module is proposed to dynamically align mismatched features, which are caused by the deviation between predefined anchors and arbitrarily oriented predicted boxes. The refined Area-IoU regression loss, which reconciles two new regression loss functions, the area-guided regression loss and IoU-guided regression loss, is proposed to simultaneously solve the scale imbalance problem and angle sensitivity problem. Recently, fully convolutional networks (FCNs) have made great progress in the task of salient object detection and existing state-of-the-arts methods mainly focus on how to integrate edge information in deep aggregation models. In this paper, we propose a novel Decomposition and Completion Network (DCN), which integrates edge and skeleton as complementary information and models the integrity of salient objects in two stages. In the decomposition network, we propose a cross multi-branch decoder, which iteratively takes advantage of cross-task aggregation and cross-layer aggregation to integrate multi-level multi-task features and predict saliency, edge, and skeleton maps simultaneously. In the completion network, edge and skeleton maps are further utilized to fill flaws and suppress noises in saliency maps via hierarchical structure-aware feature learning and multi-scale feature completion. Through jointly learning with edge and skeleton information for localizing boundaries and interiors of salient objects respectively, the proposed network generates precise saliency maps with uniformly and completely segmented salient objects. Experiments conducted on five benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms existing networks. RGB-thermal salient object detection (SOD) aims to segment the common prominent regions of visible image and corresponding thermal infrared image that we call it RGBT SOD. Existing methods don’t fully explore and exploit the potentials of complementarity of different modalities and multi-type cues of image contents, which play a vital role in achieving accurate results. In this paper, we propose a multi-interactive dual-decoder to mine and model the multi-type interactions for accurate RGBT SOD. In specific, we first encode two modalities into multi-level multi-modal feature representations. Then, we design a novel dual-decoder to conduct the interactions of multi-level features, two modalities and global contexts. With these interactions, our method works well in diversely challenging scenarios even in the presence of invalid modality. Finally, we carry out extensive experiments on public RGBT and RGBD SOD datasets, and the results show that the proposed method achieves the outstanding performance against state-of-the-art algorithms. Object detection has gained great improvements with the advances of convolutional neural networks and the availability of large amounts of accurate training data. Though the amount of data is increasing significantly, the quality of data annotations is not guaranteed from the existing crowd-sourcing labeling platforms. In addition to noisy category labels, imprecise bounding box annotations are commonly existed for object detection data. When the quality of training data degenerates, the performance of the typical object detectors is severely impaired. In this paper, we propose a Meta-Refine-Net (MRNet) to train object detectors from noisy category labels and imprecise bounding boxes. First, MRNet learns to adaptively assign lower weights to proposals with incorrect labels so as to suppress large loss values generated by these proposals on the classification branch. Second, MRNet learns to dynamically generate more accurate bounding box annotations to overcome the misleading of imprecisely annotated bounding boxes. Thus, the imprecise bounding boxes could impose positive impacts on the regression branch rather than simply be ignored. Third, we propose to refine the imprecise bounding box annotations by jointly learning from both the category and the localization information. By doing this, the approximation of ground-truth bounding boxes is more accurate while the misleading would be further alleviated. Our MRNet is model-agnostic and is capable of learning from noisy object detection data with only a few clean examples (less than 2%). We present a novel and efficient approach to estimate 6D object poses of known objects in complex scenes represented by point clouds. Our approach is based on the well-known point pair feature (PPF) matching, which utilizes self-similar point pairs to compute potential matches and thereby cast votes for the object pose by a voting scheme. The main contribution of this paper is to present an improved PPF-based recognition framework, especially a new center voting strategy based on the relative geometric relationship between the object center and point pair features. Using this geometric relationship, we first generate votes to object centers resulting in vote clusters near real object centers. Then we group and aggregate these votes to generate a set of pose hypotheses. Finally, a pose verification operator is performed to filter out false positives and predict appropriate 6D poses of the target object. Our approach is also suitable to solve the multi-instance and multi-object detection tasks. Extensive experiments on a variety of challenging benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is discriminative and robust towards similar-looking distractors, sensor noise, and geometrically simple shapes. The automatic detection and identification of fish from underwater videos is of great significance for fishery resource assessment and ecological environment monitoring. However, due to the poor quality of underwater images and unconstrained fish movement, traditional hand-designed feature extraction methods or convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection algorithms cannot meet the detection requirements in real underwater scenes. Therefore, to realize fish recognition and localization in a complex underwater environment, this paper proposes a novel composite fish detection framework based on a composite backbone and an enhanced path aggregation network called Composited FishNet. By improving the residual network (ResNet), a new composite backbone network (CBresnet) is designed to learn the scene change information (source domain style), which is caused by the differences in the image brightness, fish orientation, seabed structure, aquatic plant movement, fish species shape and texture differences. Thus, the interference of underwater environmental information on the object characteristics is reduced, and the output of the main network to the object information is strengthened. In addition, to better integrate the high and low feature information output from CBresnet, the enhanced path aggregation network (EPANet) is also designed to solve the insufficient utilization of semantic information caused by linear upsampling. Variations in both object scale and style under different capture scenes (e.g., downtown, port) greatly enhance the difficulties associated with object detection in aerial images. Although ground sample distance (GSD) provides an apparent clue to address this issue, no existing object detection methods have considered utilizing this useful prior knowledge. In this paper, we propose the first object detection network to incorporate GSD into the object detection modeling process. More specifically, built on a two-stage detection framework, we adopt a GSD identification subnet converting the GSD regression into a probability estimation process, then combine the GSD information with the sizes of Regions of Interest (RoIs) to determine the physical size of objects. The estimated physical size can provide a powerful prior for detection by reweighting the weights from the classification layer of each category to produce RoI-wise enhanced features. Furthermore, to improve the discriminability among categories of similar size and make the inference process more adaptive, the scene information is also considered. The pipeline is flexible enough to be stacked on any two-stage modern detection framework. Human attention is an interactive activity between our visual system and our brain, using both low-level visual stimulus and high-level semantic information. Previous image salient object detection (SOD) studies conduct their saliency predictions via a multitask methodology in which pixelwise saliency regression and segmentation-like saliency refinement are conducted simultaneously. However, this multitask methodology has one critical limitation: the semantic information embedded in feature backbones might be degenerated during the training process. Our visual attention is determined mainly by semantic information, which is evidenced by our tendency to pay more attention to semantically salient regions even if these regions are not the most perceptually salient at first glance. This fact clearly contradicts the widely used multitask methodology mentioned above. To address this issue, this paper divides the SOD problem into two sequential steps. First, we devise a lightweight, weakly supervised deep network to coarsely locate the semantically salient regions. Next, as a postprocessing refinement, we selectively fuse multiple off-the-shelf deep models on the semantically salient regions identified by the previous step to formulate a pixelwise saliency map. Compared with the state-of-the-art (SOTA) models that focus on learning the pixelwise saliency in single images using only perceptual clues, our method aims at investigating the object-level semantic ranks between multiple images, of which the methodology is more consistent with the human attention mechanism. Current RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) methods utilize the depth stream as complementary information to the RGB stream. However, the depth maps are usually of low-quality in existing RGB-D SOD datasets. Most RGB-D SOD networks trained with these datasets would produce error-prone results. In this paper, we propose a novel Complementary Depth Network (CDNet) to well exploit saliency-informative depth features for RGB-D SOD. To alleviate the influence of low-quality depth maps to RGB-D SOD, we propose to select saliency-informative depth maps as the training targets and leverage RGB features to estimate meaningful depth maps. Besides, to learn robust depth features for accurate prediction, we propose a new dynamic scheme to fuse the depth features extracted from the original and estimated depth maps with adaptive weights. What’s more, we design a two-stage cross-modal feature fusion scheme to well integrate the depth features with the RGB ones, further improving the performance of our CDNet on RGB-D SOD. The existing fusion-based RGB-D salient object detection methods usually adopt the bistream structure to strike a balance in the fusion trade-off between RGB and depth (D). While the D quality usually varies among the scenes, the state-of-the-art bistream approaches are depth-quality-unaware, resulting in substantial difficulties in achieving complementary fusion status between RGB and D and leading to poor fusion results for low-quality D. Thus, this paper attempts to integrate a novel depth-quality-aware subnet into the classic bistream structure in order to assess the depth quality prior to conducting the selective RGB-D fusion. Compared to the SOTA bistream methods, the major advantage of our method is its ability to lessen the importance of the low-quality, no-contribution, or even negative-contribution D regions during RGB-D fusion, achieving a much improved complementary status between RGB and D. RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) aims to segment the most attractive objects in a pair of cross-modal RGB and depth images. Currently, most existing RGB-D SOD methods focus on the foreground region when utilizing the depth images. However, the background also provides important information in traditional SOD methods for promising performance. To better explore salient information in both foreground and background regions, this paper proposes a Bilateral Attention Network (BiANet) for the RGB-D SOD task. Specifically, we introduce a Bilateral Attention Module (BAM) with a complementary attention mechanism: foreground-first (FF) attention and background-first (BF) attention. The FF attention focuses on the foreground region with a gradual refinement style, while the BF one recovers potentially useful salient information in the background region. Benefited from the proposed BAM module, our BiANet can capture more meaningful foreground and background cues, and shift more attention to refining the uncertain details between foreground and background regions. Additionally, we extend our BAM by leveraging the multi-scale techniques for better SOD performance. Extensive experiments on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that our BiANet outperforms other state-of-the-art RGB-D SOD methods in terms of objective metrics and subjective visual comparison. Directly benefiting from the deep learning methods, object detection has witnessed a great performance boost in recent years. However, drone-view object detection remains challenging for two main reasons: (1) Objects of tiny-scale with more blurs w.r.t. ground-view objects offer less valuable information towards accurate and robust detection; (2) The unevenly distributed objects make the detection inefficient, especially for regions occupied by crowded objects. Confronting such challenges, we propose an end-to-end global-local self-adaptive network (GLSAN) in this paper. The key components in our GLSAN include a global-local detection network (GLDN), a simple yet efficient self-adaptive region selecting algorithm (SARSA), and a local super-resolution network (LSRN). We integrate a global-local fusion strategy into a progressive scale-varying network to perform more precise detection, where the local fine detector can adaptively refine the target’s bounding boxes detected by the global coarse detector via cropping the original images for higher-resolution detection. The SARSA can dynamically crop the crowded regions in the input images, which is unsupervised and can be easily plugged into the networks. Additionally, we train the LSRN to enlarge the cropped images, providing more detailed information for finer-scale feature extraction, helping the detector distinguish foreground and background more easily. The SARSA and LSRN also contribute to data augmentation towards network training, which makes the detector more robust. Extensive experiments and comprehensive evaluations on the VisDrone2019-DET benchmark dataset and UAVDT dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and adaptivity of our method. Most anchor-based object detection methods have adopted predefined anchor boxes as regression references. However, the proper setting of anchor boxes may vary significantly across different datasets, improperly designed anchors severely limit the performances and adaptabilities of detectors. Recently, some works have tackled this problem by learning anchor shapes from datasets. However, all of these works explicitly or implicitly rely on predefined anchors, limiting universalities of detectors. In this paper, we propose a simple learning anchoring scheme with an effective target generation method to cast off predefined anchor dependencies. The proposed anchoring scheme, named as differentiable anchoring, simplifies learning anchor shape process by adding only one branch in parallel with the existing classification and bounding box regression branches. The proposed target generation method, including the $L_{p}$ norm ball approximation and the optimization difficulty-based pyramid level assignment approach, generates positive samples for the new branch. Compared with existing learning anchoring-based approaches, the proposed method doesn’t require any predefined anchors, while tremendously improving performances and adaptiveness of detectors. The proposed method can be seamlessly integrated to Faster RCNN, RetinaNet, and SSD, improving the detection mAP by 2.8%, 2.1% and 2.3% respectively on MS COCO 2017 test-dev set. Moreover, the differentiable anchoring-based detectors can be directly applied to specific scenarios without any modification of the hyperparameters or using a specialized optimization. Existing RGB-D salient object detection methods treat depth information as an independent component to complement RGB and widely follow the bistream parallel network architecture. To selectively fuse the CNN features extracted from both RGB and depth as a final result, the state-of-the-art (SOTA) bistream networks usually consist of two independent subbranches: one subbranch is used for RGB saliency, and the other aims for depth saliency. However, depth saliency is persistently inferior to the RGB saliency because the RGB component is intrinsically more informative than the depth component. The bistream architecture easily biases its subsequent fusion procedure to the RGB subbranch, leading to a performance bottleneck. In this paper, we propose a novel data-level recombination strategy to fuse RGB with D (depth) before deep feature extraction, where we cyclically convert the original 4-dimensional RGB-D into DGB, RDB and RGD. Then, a newly lightweight designed triple-stream network is applied over these novel formulated data to achieve an optimal channel-wise complementary fusion status between the RGB and D, achieving a new SOTA performance. This paper presents a co-salient object detection method to find common salient regions in a set of images. We utilize deep saliency networks to transfer co-saliency prior knowledge and better capture high-level semantic information. The resulting initial co-saliency maps are enhanced by seed propagation steps over an integrated graph. The deep saliency networks are trained in a supervised manner to avoid weakly supervised online learning and exploit them not only to extract high-level features but also to produce both intra- and inter-image saliency maps. Through a refinement step, the initial co-saliency maps can uniformly highlight co-salient regions and locate accurate object boundaries. To handle input image groups inconsistent in size, we propose to pool multi-regional descriptors including both within-segment and within-group information. In addition, the integrated multilayer graph is constructed to find the regions that the previous steps may not detect by seed propagation with low-level descriptors. In this paper, we utilize the useful complementary components of high- and low-level information and several learning-based steps. Salient object detection has undergone a very rapid development with the blooming of Deep Neural Network (DNN), which is usually taken as an important preprocessing procedure in various computer vision tasks. However, the down-sampling operations, such as pooling and striding, always make the final predictions blurred at edges, which has seriously degenerated the performance of salient object detection. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach, i.e., Hierarchical and Interactive Refinement Network (HIRN), to preserve the edge structures in detecting salient objects. In particular, a novel multi-stage and dual-path network structure is designed to estimate the salient edges and regions from the low-level and high-level feature maps, respectively. As a result, the predicted regions will become more accurate by enhancing the weak responses at edges, while the predicted edges will become more semantic by suppressing the false positives in background. Once the salient maps of edges and regions are obtained at the output layers, a novel edge-guided inference algorithm is introduced to further filter the resulting regions along the predicted edges. Extensive experiments on several benchmark datasets have been conducted, in which the results show that our method significantly outperforms a variety of state-of-the-art approaches. Mobile devices usually mount a depth sensor to resolve ill-posed problems, like salient object detection on cluttered background. The main barrier of exploring RGBD data is to handle the information from two different modalities. To cope with this problem, in this paper, we propose a boundary-aware cross-modal fusion network for RGBD salient object detection. In particular, to enhance the fusion of color and depth features, we present a cross-modal feature sampling module to balance the contribution of the RGB and depth features based on the statistics of their channel values. In addition, in our multi-scale dense fusion network architecture, we not only incorporate edge-sensitive losses to preserve the boundary of the detected salient region, but also refine its structure by merging the estimated saliency maps of different scales. We accomplish the multi-scale saliency map merging using two alternative methods which produce refined saliency maps via per-pixel weighted combination and an encoder-decoder network. Salient object detection aims at locating the most conspicuous objects in natural images, which usually acts as a very important pre-processing procedure in many computer vision tasks. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective Hierarchical U-shape Attention Network (HUAN) to learn a robust mapping function for salient object detection. Firstly, a novel attention mechanism is formulated to improve the well-known U-shape network, in which the memory consumption can be extensively reduced and the mask quality can be significantly improved by the resulting U-shape Attention Network (UAN). Secondly, a novel hierarchical structure is constructed to well bridge the low-level and high-level feature representations between different UANs, in which both the intra-network and inter-network connections are considered to explore the salient patterns from a local to global view. Thirdly, a novel Mask Fusion Network (MFN) is designed to fuse the intermediate prediction results, so as to generate a salient mask which is in higher-quality than any of those inputs. Our HUAN can be trained together with any backbone network in an end-to-end manner, and high-quality masks can be finally learned to represent the salient objects. Existing saliency models typically incorporate contexts holistically. However, for each pixel, usually only part of its context region contributes to saliency prediction, while other parts are likely either noise or distractions. In this paper, we propose a novel pixel-wise contextual attention network (PiCANet) to selectively attend to informative context locations at each pixel. The proposed PiCANet generates an attention map over the contextual region of each pixel and construct attentive contextual features via selectively incorporating the features of useful context locations. We present three formulations of the PiCANet via embedding the pixel-wise contextual attention mechanism into the pooling and convolution operations with attending to global or local contexts. All the three models are fully differentiable and can be integrated with convolutional neural networks with joint training. In this work, we introduce the proposed PiCANets into a U-Net model for salient object detection. The generated global and local attention maps can learn to incorporate global contrast and regional smoothness, which help localize and highlight salient objects more accurately and uniformly. Experimental results show that the proposed PiCANets perform effectively for saliency detection against the state-of-the-art methods. RGB-D based salient object detection (SOD) methods leverage the depth map as a valuable complementary information for better SOD performance. Previous methods mainly resort to exploit the correlation between RGB image and depth map in three fusion domains: input images, extracted features, and output results. However, these fusion strategies cannot fully capture the complex correlation between the RGB image and depth map. Besides, these methods do not fully explore the cross-modal complementarity and the cross-level continuity of information, and treat information from different sources without discrimination. In this paper, to address these problems, we propose a novel Information Conversion Network (ICNet) for RGB-D based SOD by employing the siamese structure with encoder-decoder architecture. To fuse high-level RGB and depth features in an interactive and adaptive way, we propose a novel Information Conversion Module (ICM), which contains concatenation operations and correlation layers. Furthermore, we design a Cross-modal Depth-weighted Combination (CDC) block to discriminate the cross-modal features from different sources and to enhance RGB features with depth features at each level. Extensive experiments on five commonly tested datasets demonstrate the superiority of our ICNet over 15 state-of-the-art RGB-D based SOD methods, and validate the effectiveness of the proposed ICM and CDC block. Recent deep learning based salient object detection methods improve the performance by introducing multi-scale strategies into fully convolutional neural networks (FCNs). The final result is obtained by integrating all the predictions at each scale. However, the existing multi-scale based methods suffer from several problems: 1) it is difficult to directly learn discriminative features and filters to regress high-resolution saliency masks for each scale; 2) rescaling the multi-scale features could pull in many redundant and inaccurate values, and this weakens the representational ability of the network. In this paper, we propose a residual learning strategy and introduce to gradually refine the coarse prediction scale-by-scale. Concretely, instead of directly predicting the finest-resolution result at each scale, we learn to predict residuals to remedy the errors between coarse saliency map and scale-matching ground truth masks. We employ a Dilated Convolutional Pyramid Pooling (DCPP) module to generate the coarse prediction and guide the the residual learning process through several novel Attentional Residual Modules (ARMs). We name our network as Residual Refinement Network (R2Net). We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method against other state-of-the-art algorithms on five released benchmark datasets. Weakly supervised object detection has attracted increasing research attention recently. To this end, most existing schemes rely on scoring category-independent region proposals, which is formulated as a multiple instance learning problem. During this process, the proposal scores are aggregated and supervised by only image-level labels, which often fails to locate object boundaries precisely. In this paper, we break through such a restriction by taking a deeper look into the score aggregation stage and propose a Category-aware Spatial Constraint (CSC) scheme for proposals, which is integrated into weakly supervised object detection in an end-to-end learning manner. In particular, we incorporate the global shape information of objects as an unsupervised constraint, which is inferred from build-in foreground-and-background cues, termed Category-specific Pixel Gradient (CPG) maps. Specifically, each region proposal is weighted according to how well it covers the estimated shape of objects. For each category, a multi-center regularization is further introduced to penalize the violations between centers cluster and high-score proposals in a given image. Extensive experiments are done on the most widely-used benchmark Pascal VOC and COCO, which shows that our approach significantly improves weakly supervised object detection without adding new learnable parameters to the existing models nor changing the structures of CNNs. Integration of multi-level contextual information, such as feature maps and side outputs, is crucial for Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)-based salient object detection. However, most existing methods either simply concatenate multi-level feature maps or calculate element-wise addition of multi-level side outputs, thus failing to take full advantages of them. In this paper, we propose a new strategy for guiding multi-level contextual information integration, where feature maps and side outputs across layers are fully engaged. Specifically, shallower-level feature maps are guided by the deeper-level side outputs to learn more accurate properties of the salient object. In turn, the deeper-level side outputs can be propagated to high-resolution versions with spatial details complemented by means of shallower-level feature maps. Moreover, a group convolution module is proposed with the aim to achieve high-discriminative feature maps, in which the backbone feature maps are divided into a number of groups and then the convolution is applied to the channels of backbone feature maps within each group. Eventually, the group convolution module is incorporated in the guidance module to further promote the guidance role. Visual attention is an important mechanism in the human visual system (HVS) and there have been numerous saliency detection algorithms designed for 2D images/video recently. However, the research for fixation detection of stereoscopic video is still limited and challenging due to the complicated depth and motion information. In this paper, we design a novel multi-module fully convolutional network (MM-FCN) for fixation detection of stereoscopic video. Specifically, we design a fully convolutional network for spatial saliency prediction (S-FCN), where the initial spatial saliency map of stereoscopic video is learned by image database of object detection. Furthermore, the fully convolutional network for temporal saliency prediction (T-FCN) is constructed by combining saliency results from S-FCN and motion information from video frames. Finally, the fully convolutional network for depth fixation prediction (D-FCN) is designed to compute the final fixation map of stereoscopic video by learning depth features with spatiotemporal features from T-FCN. In the context of 2D/3D registration, this paper introduces an approach that allows for matching features detected in two different modalities, photographs, and 3D models, by using a common 2D representation. More precisely, 2D images are matched with a set of depth images representing the 3D model. After introducing the concept of Curvilinear Saliency, which is related to curvature estimation, we propose a new ridge and valley detector for depth images rendered from 3D models. A variant of this detector is adapted to photographs, first by considering multi-scale features and second by integrating the focus curve principle. Finally, a registration algorithm determines the correct view of the 3D model and, thus, the pose of the photograph. This approach relies on the Histogram of Curvilinear Saliency (HCS), an adaptation of the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) to the proposed features in 2D and 3D. Learning similarity of two images is an important problem in computer vision and has many potential applications. Most of the previous works focus on generating image similarities in three aspects: global feature distance computing, local feature matching, and image concepts comparison. However, the task of directly detecting the class agnostic common objects from two images has not been studied before, which goes one step further to capture image similarities at the region level. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end image Common Object Detection Network (CODN) to detect class agnostic common objects from two images. The proposed method consists of two main modules: locating module and matching module. The locating module generates candidate proposals of each two images. The matching module learns the similarities of the candidate proposal pairs from two images, and refines the bounding boxes of the candidate proposals. The learning procedure of CODN is implemented in an integrated way and a multi-task loss is designed to guarantee both region localization and common object matching. Previous RGB-D fusion systems based on convolutional neural networks typically employ a two-stream architecture, in which RGB and depth inputs are learned independently. The multi-modal fusion stage is typically performed by concatenating the deep features from each stream in the inference process. The traditional two-stream architecture might experience insufficient multi-modal fusion due to two following limitations: 1) the cross-modal complementarity is rarely studied in the bottom–up path, wherein we believe the cross-modal complements can be combined to learn new discriminative features to enlarge the RGB-D representation community and 2) the cross-modal channels are typically combined by undifferentiated concatenation, which appears ambiguous to selecting cross-modal complementary features. In this paper, we address these two limitations by proposing a novel three-stream attention-aware multi-modal fusion network. In the proposed architecture, a cross-modal distillation stream, accompanying the RGB-specific and depth-specific streams, is introduced to extract new RGB-D features in each level in the bottom–up path. Furthermore, the channel-wise attention mechanism is innovatively introduced to the cross-modal cross-level fusion problem to adaptively select complementary feature maps from each modality in each level. Recognizing objects from simultaneously sensed photometric (RGB) and depth channels is a fundamental yet practical problem in many machine vision applications, such as robot grasping and autonomous driving. In this paper, we address this problem by developing a cross-modal attentional context (CMAC) learning framework, which enables the full exploitation of the context information from both RGB and depth data. Compared to existing RGB-D object detection frameworks, our approach has several appealing properties. First, it consists of an attention-based global context model for exploiting adaptive contextual information and incorporating this information into a region-based CNN (e.g., fast RCNN) framework to achieve improved object detection performance. Second, our CMAC framework further contains a fine-grained object part attention module to harness multiple discriminative object parts inside each possible object region for superior local feature representation. While greatly improving the accuracy of RGB-D object detection, the effective cross-modal information fusion as well as attentional context modeling in our proposed model provide an interpretable visualization scheme. The field of object detection has made great progress in recent years. Most of these improvements are derived from using a more sophisticated convolutional neural network. However, in the case of humans, the attention mechanism, global structure information, and local details of objects all play an important role for detecting an object. In this paper, we propose a novel fully convolutional network, named as Attention CoupleNet, to incorporate the attention-related information and global and local information of objects to improve the detection performance. Specifically, we first design a cascade attention structure to perceive the global scene of the image and generate class-agnostic attention maps. Then the attention maps are encoded into the network to acquire object-aware features. Next, we propose a unique fully convolutional coupling structure to couple global structure and local parts of the object to further formulate a discriminative feature representation. To fully explore the global and local properties, we also design different coupling strategies and normalization ways to make full use of the complementary advantages between the global and local information. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. We achieve state-of-the-art results on all three challenging data sets, i.e., a mAP of 85.7% on VOC07, 84.3% on VOC12, and 35.4% on COCO. Foreground and background cues can assist humans in quickly understanding visual scenes. In computer vision, however, it is difficult to detect salient objects when they touch the image boundary. Hence, detecting salient objects robustly under such circumstances without sacrificing precision and recall can be challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel model for salient region detection, namely, the foreground-center-background (FCB) saliency model. Its main highlights as follows. First, we use regional color volume as the foreground, together with perceptually uniform color differences within regions to detect salient regions. This can highlight salient objects robustly, even when they touched the image boundary, without greatly sacrificing precision and recall. Second, we employ center saliency to detect salient regions together with foreground and background cues, which improves saliency detection performance. Finally, we propose a novel and simple yet efficient method that combines foreground, center, and background saliency. Experimental validation with three well-known benchmark data sets indicates that the FCB model outperforms several state-of-the-art methods in terms of precision, recall, F-measure, and particularly, the mean absolute error. This paper presents a novel model for video salient object detection called spatiotemporal constrained optimization model (SCOM), which exploits spatial and temporal cues, as well as a local constraint, to achieve a global saliency optimization. For a robust motion estimation of salient objects, we propose a novel approach to modeling the motion cues from optical flow field, the saliency map of the prior video frame and the motion history of change detection, which is able to distinguish the moving salient objects from diverse changing background regions. Furthermore, an effective objectness measure is proposed with intuitive geometrical interpretation to extract some reliable object and background regions, which provided as the basis to define the foreground potential, background potential, and the constraint to support saliency propagation. These potentials and the constraint are formulated into the proposed SCOM framework to generate an optimal saliency map for each frame in a video. The proposed model is extensively evaluated on the widely used challenging benchmark data sets. In this paper, we propose YoTube—a novel deep learning framework for generating action proposals in untrimmed videos, where each action proposal corresponds to a spatial-temporal tube that potentially locates one human action. Most of the existing works generate proposals by clustering low-level features or linking image proposals, which ignore the interplay between long-term temporal context and short-term cues. Different from these works, our method considers the interplay by designing a new recurrent YoTube detector and static YoTube detector. The recurrent YoTube detector sequentially regresses candidate bounding boxes using Recurrent Neural Network learned long-term temporal contexts. The static YoTube detector produces bounding boxes using rich appearance cues in every single frame. To fully exploit the complementary appearance, motion, and temporal context, we train the recurrent and static detector using RGB (Color) and flow information. Moreover, we fuse the corresponding outputs of the detectors to produce accurate and robust proposal boxes and obtain the final action proposals by linking the proposal boxes using dynamic programming with a novel path trimming method. Benefiting from the pipeline of our method, the untrimmed video could be effectively and efficiently handled. Extensive experiments on the challenging UCF-101, UCF-Sports, and JHMDB datasets show superior performance of the proposed method compared with the state of the arts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we focus on improving the proposal classification stage in the object detection task and present implicit negative sub-categorization and sink diversion to lift the performance by strengthening loss function in this stage. First, based on the observation that the “background” class is generally very diverse and thus challenging to be handled as a single indiscriminative class in existing state-of-the-art methods, we propose to divide the background category into multiple implicit sub-categories to explicitly differentiate diverse patterns within it. Second, since the ground truth class inevitably has low-value probability scores for certain images, we propose to add a “sink” class and divert the probabilities of wrong classes to this class when necessary, such that the ground truth label will still have a higher probability than other wrong classes even though it has low probability output. Additionally, we propose to use dilated convolution, which is widely used in the semantic segmentation task, for efficient and valuable context information extraction. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 data sets show that our proposed methods based on faster R-CNN implementation can achieve state-of-the-art mAPs, i.e., 84.1%, 82.6%, respectively, and obtain 2.5% improvement on ILSVRC DET compared with that of ResNet. In this paper, we propose a novel edge preserving and multi-scale contextual neural network for salient object detection. The proposed framework is aiming to address two limits of the existing CNN based methods. First, region-based CNN methods lack sufficient context to accurately locate salient object since they deal with each region independently. Second, pixel-based CNN methods suffer from blurry boundaries due to the presence of convolutional and pooling layers. Motivated by these, we first propose an end-to-end edge-preserved neural network based on Fast R-CNN framework (named RegionNet) to efficiently generate saliency map with sharp object boundaries. Later, to further improve it, multi-scale spatial context is attached to RegionNet to consider the relationship between regions and the global scenes. Furthermore, our method can be generally applied to RGB-D saliency detection by depth refinement. The proposed framework achieves both clear detection boundary and multi-scale contextual robustness simultaneously for the first time, and thus achieves an optimized performance. Object skeletons are useful for object representation and object detection. They are complementary to the object contour, and provide extra information, such as how object scale (thickness) varies among object parts. But object skeleton extraction from natural images is very challenging, because it requires the extractor to be able to capture both local and non-local image context in order to determine the scale of each skeleton pixel. In this paper, we present a novel fully convolutional network with multiple scale-associated side outputs to address this problem. By observing the relationship between the receptive field sizes of the different layers in the network and the skeleton scales they can capture, we introduce two scale-associated side outputs to each stage of the network. The network is trained by multi-task learning, where one task is skeleton localization to classify whether a pixel is a skeleton pixel or not, and the other is skeleton scale prediction to regress the scale of each skeleton pixel. Supervision is imposed at different stages by guiding the scale-associated side outputs toward the ground-truth skeletons at the appropriate scales. The responses of the multiple scale-associated side outputs are then fused in a scale-specific way to detect skeleton pixels using multiple scales effectively. Our method achieves promising results on two skeleton extraction datasets, and significantly outperforms other competitors.
