Image mosaicking applications require both geometrical and photometrical registrations between the images that compose the mosaic. This paper proposes a probabilistic color correction algorithm for correcting the photometrical disparities. First, the image to be color corrected is segmented into several regions using mean shift. Then, connected regions are extracted using a region fusion algorithm. Local joint image histograms of each region are modeled as collections of truncated Gaussians using a maximum likelihood estimation procedure. Then, local color palette mapping functions are computed using these sets of Gaussians. The color correction is performed by applying those functions to all the regions of the image. An extensive comparison with ten other state of the art color correction algorithms is presented, using two different image pair data sets. Milano Retinex is a family of spatial color algorithms inspired by Retinex and mainly devoted to the image enhancement. In the so-called point-based sampling Milano Retinex algorithms, this task is accomplished by processing the color of each image pixel based on a set of colors sampled in its surround. This paper presents STAR, a segmentation based approximation of the point-based sampling Milano Retinex approaches: it replaces the pixel-wise image sampling by a novel, computationally efficient procedure that detects once for all the color and spatial information relevant to image enhancement from clusters of pixels output by a segmentation. The experiments reported here show that STAR performs similarly to previous point-based sampling Milano Retinex approaches and that STAR enhancement improves the accuracy of the well-known algorithm scale-invariant feature transform on the description and matching of photographs captured under difficult light conditions. This paper presents algorithms for the digital restoration of films damaged by tear. As well as causing local image data loss, a tear results in a noticeable relative shift in the frame between the regions at either side of the tear boundary. This paper describes a method for delineating the tear boundary and for correcting the displacement. This is achieved using a graph-cut segmentation framework that can be either automatic or interactive when automatic segmentation is not possible. Using temporal intensity differences to form the boundary conditions for the segmentation facilitates the robust division of the frame. The resulting segmentation map is used to calculate and correct the relative displacement using a global-motion estimation approach based on motion histograms. Numerous single image super-resolution (SISR) algorithms have been proposed during the past years to reconstruct a high-resolution (HR) image from its low-resolution (LR) observation. However, how to fairly compare the performance of different SISR algorithms/results remains a challenging problem. So far, the lack of comprehensive human subjective study on large-scale real-world SISR datasets and accurate objective SISR quality assessment metrics makes it unreliable to truly understand the performance of different SISR algorithms. We in this paper make efforts to tackle these two issues. Firstly, we construct a real-world SISR quality dataset (i.e., RealSRQ) and conduct human subjective studies to compare the performance of the representative SISR algorithms. Secondly, we propose a new objective metric, i.e., KLTSRQA, based on the Karhunen-Loéve Transform (KLT) to evaluate the quality of SISR images in a no-reference (NR) manner. Experiments on our constructed RealSRQ and the latest synthetic SISR quality dataset (i.e., QADS) have demonstrated the superiority of our proposed KLTSRQA metric, achieving higher consistency with human subjective scores than relevant existing NR image quality assessment (NR-IQA) metrics. Graph cuts are widely used in computer vision. To speed up the optimization process and improve the scalability for large graphs, Strandmark and Kahl introduced a splitting method to split a graph into multiple subgraphs for parallel computation in both shared and distributed memory models. However, this parallel algorithm (the parallel BK-algorithm) does not have a polynomial bound on the number of iterations and is found to be non-convergent in some cases due to the possible multiple optimal solutions of its sub-problems. To remedy this non-convergence problem, in this paper, we first introduce a merging method capable of merging any number of those adjacent sub-graphs that can hardly reach agreement on their overlapping regions in the parallel BK-algorithm. Based on the pseudo-boolean representations of graph cuts, our merging method is shown to be effectively reused all the computed flows in these sub-graphs. Through both splitting and merging, we further propose a dynamic parallel and distributed graph cuts algorithm with guaranteed convergence to the globally optimal solutions within a predefined number of iterations. In essence, this paper provides a general framework to allow more sophisticated splitting and merging strategies to be employed to further boost performance. Style transfer is a process of migrating a style from a given image to the content of another, synthesizing a new image, which is an artistic mixture of the two. Recent work on this problem adopting convolutional neural-networks (CNN) ignited a renewed interest in this field, due to the very impressive results obtained. There exists an alternative path toward handling the style transfer task, via the generalization of texture synthesis algorithms. This approach has been proposed over the years, but its results are typically less impressive compared with the CNN ones. In this paper, we propose a novel style transfer algorithm that extends the texture synthesis work of Kwatra et al. (2005), while aiming to get stylized images that are closer in quality to the CNN ones. We modify Kwatra’s algorithm in several key ways in order to achieve the desired transfer, with emphasis on a consistent way for keeping the content intact in selected regions, while producing hallucinated and rich style in others. The results obtained are visually pleasing and diverse, shown to be competitive with the recent CNN style transfer algorithms. In this paper, we propose a new framework for hierarchical image segmentation based on iterative contraction and merging. In the proposed framework, we treat the hierarchical image segmentation problem as a sequel of optimization problems, with each optimization process being realized by a contraction-and-merging process to identify and merge the most similar data pairs at the current resolution. At the beginning, we perform pixel-based contraction and merging to quickly combine image pixels into initial region-elements with visually indistinguishable intra-region color difference. After that, we iteratively perform region-based contraction and merging to group adjacent regions into larger ones to progressively form a segmentation dendrogram for hierarchical segmentation. Comparing with the state-of-the-art techniques, the proposed algorithm can not only produce high-quality segmentation results in a more efficient way, but also keep a lot of boundary details in the segmentation results. The recent boost in undersea operations has led to the development of high-resolution sonar systems mounted on autonomous vehicles. These vehicles are used to scan the seafloor in search of different objects such as sunken ships, archaeological sites, and submerged mines. An important part of the detection operation is the segmentation of sonar images, where the object’s highlight and shadow are distinguished from the seabed background. In this paper, we focus on the automatic segmentation of sonar images. We present our enhanced fuzzy-based with Kernel metric (EnFK) algorithm for the segmentation of sonar images which, in an attempt to improve segmentation accuracy, introduces two new fuzzy terms of local spatial and statistical information. Our algorithm includes a preliminary de-noising algorithm which, together with the original image, feeds into the segmentation procedure to avoid trapping to local minima and to improve convergence. The result is a segmentation procedure that specifically suits the intensity inhomogeneity and the complex seabed texture of sonar images. We tested our approach using simulated images, real sonar images, and sonar images that were created in two different sea experiments, using multibeam sonar and synthetic aperture sonar. There exist a significant number of benchmarks for evaluating the performance of boundary detection algorithms, most of them relying on some sort of comparison of the automatically-generated boundaries with human-labeled ones. Such benchmarks are composed of a representative image data set, as well as a comparison measure on the universe of boundary images. Despite many such data sets and measures have been proposed, there is no clear way of knowing which combinations of them are the most suitable for the task. In this paper, we introduce four criteria that allow for a sensible evaluation of the performance of a comparison measure on a given data set. The criteria mimic the way in which humans understand boundary images, as well as their ability to recognize the underlying scenes. These criteria can, as a final goal, quantify the ability of the boundary detection benchmarks to evaluate the performance of boundary detection methods, either edge-based or segmentation-based. Algorithms for fully automatic segmentation of images are often not sufficiently generic with suitable accuracy, and fully manual segmentation is not practical in many settings. There is a need for semiautomatic algorithms, which are capable of interacting with the user and taking into account the collected feedback. Typically, such methods have simply incorporated user feedback directly. Here, we employ active learning of optimal queries to guide user interaction. Our work in this paper is based on constrained spectral clustering that iteratively incorporates user feedback by propagating it through the calculated affinities. The original framework does not scale well to large data sets, and hence is not straightforward to apply to interactive image segmentation. In order to address this issue, we adopt advanced numerical methods for eigen-decomposition implemented over a subsampling scheme. Our key innovation, however, is an active learning strategy that chooses pairwise queries to present to the user in order to increase the rate of learning from the feedback. Performance evaluation is carried out on the Berkeley segmentation and Graz-02 image data sets, confirming that convergence to high accuracy levels is realizable in relatively few iterations. The state-of-the-art interactive image segmentation algorithms are sensitive to the user inputs and often unable to produce an accurate boundary with a small amount of user interaction. They frequently rely on laborious user editing to refine the segmentation boundary. In this paper, we propose a robust and accurate interactive method based on the recently developed continuous-domain convex active contour model. The proposed method exhibits many desirable properties of an effective interactive image segmentation algorithm, including robustness to user inputs and different initializations, the ability to produce a smooth and accurate boundary contour, and the ability to handle topology changes. Segmenting semantically meaningful whole objects from images is a challenging problem, and it becomes especially so without higher level common sense reasoning. In this paper, we present an interactive segmentation framework that integrates image appearance and boundary constraints in a principled way to address this problem. In particular, we assume that small sets of pixels, which are referred to as seed pixels, are labeled as the object and background. The seed pixels are used to estimate the labels of the unlabeled pixels using Dirichlet process multiple-view learning, which leverages 1) multiple-view learning that integrates appearance and boundary constraints and 2) Dirichlet process mixture-based nonlinear classification that simultaneously models image features and discriminates between the object and background classes. With the proposed learning and inference algorithms, our segmentation framework is experimentally shown to produce both quantitatively and qualitatively promising results on a standard dataset of images. Determining the relationship between the dendritic spine morphology and its functional properties is a fundamental challenge in neurobiology research. In particular, how to accurately and automatically analyse meaningful structural information from a large microscopy image data set is far away from being resolved. As pointed out in existing literature, one remaining challenge in spine detection and segmentation is how to automatically separate touching spines. In this paper, based on various global and local geometric features of the dendrite structure, we propose a novel approach to detect and segment neuronal spines, in particular, a breaking-down and stitching-up algorithm to accurately separate touching spines. A new formulation of active contours based on explicit functions has been recently suggested. This novel framework allows real-time 3-D segmentation since it reduces the dimensionality of the segmentation problem. In this paper, we propose a B-spline formulation of this approach, which further improves the computational efficiency of the algorithm. We also show that this framework allows evolving the active contour using local region-based terms, thereby overcoming the limitations of the original method while preserving computational speed. Computers are developing along with a new trend from the dual-core and quad-core processors to ones with tens or even hundreds of cores. Multimedia, as one of the most important applications in computers, has an urgent need to design parallel coding algorithms for compression. Taking intraframe/image coding as a start point, this paper proposes a pure line-by-line coding scheme (LBLC) to meet the need. In LBLC, an input image is processed line by line sequentially, and each line is divided into small fixed-length segments. The compression of all segments from prediction to entropy coding is completely independent and concurrent at many cores. Results on a general-purpose computer show that our scheme can get a 13.9 times speedup with 15 cores at the encoder and a 10.3 times speedup at the decoder. Ideally, such near-linear speeding relation with the number of cores can be kept for more than 100 cores. In addition to the high parallelism, the proposed scheme can perform comparatively or even better than the H.264 high profile above middle bit rates. At near-lossless coding, it outperforms H.264 more than 10 dB. At lossless coding, up to 14% bit-rate reduction is observed compared with H.264 lossless coding at the high 4:4:4 profile. In this paper, we introduce a method to detect co-saliency from an image pair that may have some objects in common. The co-saliency is modeled as a linear combination of the single-image saliency map (SISM) and the multi-image saliency map (MISM). The first term is designed to describe the local attention, which is computed by using three saliency detection techniques available in literature. To compute the MISM, a co-multilayer graph is constructed by dividing the image pair into a spatial pyramid representation. Each node in the graph is described by two types of visual descriptors, which are extracted from a representation of some aspects of local appearance, e.g., color and texture properties. In order to evaluate the similarity between two nodes, we employ a normalized single-pair SimRank algorithm to compute the similarity score. In this paper, we propose an approach for tracking an object of interest based on 3-D range data. We employ particle filtering and active contours to simultaneously estimate the global motion of the object and its local deformations. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of range information to deal with the challenging (but common) situation in which the tracked object disappears from the image domain entirely and reappears later. To cope with this problem, a method based on principle component analysis (PCA) of shape information is proposed. In the proposed method, if the target disappears out of frame, shape similarity energy is used to detect target candidates that match a template shape learned online from previously observed frames. Thus, we require no a priori knowledge of the target's shape. Experimental results show the practical applicability and robustness of the proposed algorithm in realistic tracking scenarios. Intensity inhomogeneity often occurs in real-world images, which presents a considerable challenge in image segmentation. The most widely used image segmentation algorithms are region-based and typically rely on the homogeneity of the image intensities in the regions of interest, which often fail to provide accurate segmentation results due to the intensity inhomogeneity. This paper proposes a novel region-based method for image segmentation, which is able to deal with intensity inhomogeneities in the segmentation. First, based on the model of images with intensity inhomogeneities, we derive a local intensity clustering property of the image intensities, and define a local clustering criterion function for the image intensities in a neighborhood of each point. This local clustering criterion function is then integrated with respect to the neighborhood center to give a global criterion of image segmentation. In a level set formulation, this criterion defines an energy in terms of the level set functions that represent a partition of the image domain and a bias field that accounts for the intensity inhomogeneity of the image. Therefore, by minimizing this energy, our method is able to simultaneously segment the image and estimate the bias field, and the estimated bias field can be used for intensity inhomogeneity correction (or bias correction). Our method has been validated on synthetic images and real images of various modalities, with desirable performance in the presence of intensity inhomogeneities. Experiments show that our method is more robust to initialization, faster and more accurate than the well-known piecewise smooth model. Image segmentation plays an important role in computer vision and image analysis. In this paper, image segmentation is formulated as a labeling problem under a probability maximization framework. To estimate the label configuration, an iterative optimization scheme is proposed to alternately carry out the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation and the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation. The MAP estimation problem is modeled with Markov random fields (MRFs) and a graph cut algorithm is used to find the solution to the MAP estimation. The ML estimation is achieved by computing the means of region features in a Gaussian model. Our algorithm can automatically segment an image into regions with relevant textures or colors without the need to know the number of regions in advance. Its results match image edges very well and are consistent with human perception. Comparing to six state-of-the-art algorithms, extensive experiments have shown that our algorithm performs the best. This paper presents a new approach for the segmentation of color textured images, which is based on a novel energy function. The proposed energy function, which expresses the local smoothness of an image area, is derived by exploiting an intermediate step of modal analysis that is utilized in order to describe and analyze the deformations of a 3-D deformable surface model. The external forces that attract the 3-D deformable surface model combine the intensity of the image pixels with the spatial information of local image regions. The proposed image segmentation algorithm has two steps. First, a color quantization scheme, which is based on the node displacements of the deformable surface model, is utilized in order[to decrease the number of colors in the image. Then, the proposed energy function is used as a criterion for a region growing algorithm. The final segmentation of the image is derived by a region merge approach. The proposed method was applied to the Berkeley segmentation database. The obtained results show good segmentation robustness, when compared to other state of the art image segmentation algorithms. Multifractal analysis is becoming more and more popular in image segmentation community, in which the box-counting based multifractal dimension estimations are most commonly used. However, in spite of its computational efficiency, the regular partition scheme used by various box-counting methods intrinsically produces less accurate results. In this paper, a novel multifractal estimation algorithm based on mathematical morphology is proposed and a set of new multifractal descriptors, namely the local morphological multifractal exponents is defined to characterize the local scaling properties of textures. A series of cubic structure elements and an iterative dilation scheme are utilized so that the computational complexity of the morphological operations can be tremendously reduced. Both the proposed algorithm and the box-counting based methods have been applied to the segmentation of texture mosaics and real images. This paper presents an efficient technique for extracting closed contours from range images' edge points. Edge points are assumed to be given as input to the algorithm (i.e., previously computed by an edge-based range image segmentation technique). The proposed approach consists of three steps. Initially, a partially connected graph is generated from those input points. Then, the minimum spanning tree of that graph is computed. Finally, a postprocessing technique generates a single path through the regions' boundaries by removing noisy links and closing open contours. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the fact that, by representing edge points as nodes of a partially connected graph, it reduces the contour closure problem to a minimum spanning tree partitioning problem plus a cost function minimization stage to generate closed contours. In this paper, we introduce a new image segmentation scheme that is based on bidirectional labeling and registration and prove that its segmentation performance is equivalent to that of the conventional watershed segmentation algorithm. The proposed bidirectional labeling and registration scheme, which we refer to as bidirectional labeling and registration scheme (BIDS), involves only linear scans of image pixels. It uses one-dimensional operations rather than the queues that are used in traditional segmentation algorithms, which are two-dimensional problems. BIDS also provides unique labels for individual homogeneous regions. We propose a novel algorithm to partition an image with low depth-of-field (DOF) into focused object-of-interest (OOI) and defocused background. The proposed algorithm unfolds into three steps. In the first step, we transform the low-DOF image into an appropriate feature space, in which the spatial distribution of the high-frequency components is represented. This is conducted by computing higher order statistics (HOS) for all pixels in the low-DOF image. Next, the obtained feature space, which is called HOS map in this paper, is simplified by removing small dark holes and bright patches using a morphological filter by reconstruction. Finally, the OOI is extracted by applying region merging to the simplified image and by thresholding. Unlike the previous methods that rely on sharp details of OOI only, the proposed algorithm complements the limitation of them by using morphological filters, which also allows perfect preservation of the contour information. Image segmentation is an essential processing step for many image analysis applications. In this paper, we propose a novel pixon-based adaptive scale method for image segmentation. The key idea of our approach is that a pixon-based image model is combined with a Markov random field (MRF) model under a Bayesian framework. In our method, we introduce a new pixon scheme that is more suitable for image segmentation than the "fuzzy" pixon scheme. The anisotropic diffusion equation is successfully used to form the pixons in our new pixon scheme. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for real-time single-object tracking in videos in unconstrained environments. The algorithm comprises two different components that are trained “in one shot” at the first video frame: a detector that makes use of the generalized Hough transform with color and gradient descriptors and a probabilistic segmentation method based on global models for foreground and background color distributions. Both components work at pixel level and are used for tracking in a combined way adapting each other in a co-training manner. Moreover, we propose an adaptive shape model as well as a new probabilistic method for updating the scale of the tracker. Through effective model adaptation and segmentation, the algorithm is able to track objects that undergo rigid and non-rigid deformations and considerable shape and appearance variations. The proposed tracking method has been thoroughly evaluated on challenging benchmarks, and outperforms the state-of-the-art tracking methods designed for the same task. In this paper, we propose a new video inpainting method which applies to both static or free-moving camera videos. The method can be used for object removal, error concealment, and background reconstruction applications. To limit the computational time, a frame is inpainted by considering a small number of neighboring pictures which are grouped into a group of pictures (GoP). More specifically, to inpaint a frame, the method starts by aligning all the frames of the GoP. This is achieved by a region-based homography computation method which allows us to strengthen the spatial consistency of aligned frames. Then, from the stack of aligned frames, an energy function based on both spatial and temporal coherency terms is globally minimized. This energy function is efficient enough to provide high quality results even when the number of pictures in the GoP is rather small, e.g. 20 neighboring frames. This drastically reduces the algorithm complexity and makes the approach well suited for near real-time video editing applications as well as for loss concealment applications. Experiments with several challenging video sequences show that the proposed method provides visually pleasing results for object removal, error concealment, and background reconstruction context. In this paper, we propose a novel supervised nonnegative matrix factorization-based framework for both image classification and annotation. The framework consists of two phases: training and prediction. In the training phase, two supervised nonnegative matrix factorizations for image descriptors and annotation terms are combined to identify the latent image bases, and to represent the training images in the bases space. These latent bases can capture the representation of the images in terms of both descriptors and annotation terms. Based on the new representation of training images, classifiers can be learnt and built. In the prediction phase, a test image is first represented by the latent bases via solving a linear least squares problem, and then its class label and annotation can be predicted via the trained classifiers and the proposed annotation mapping model. In the algorithm, we develop a three-block proximal alternating nonnegative least squares algorithm to determine the latent image bases, and show its convergent property. Extensive experiments on real-world image data sets suggest that the proposed framework is able to predict the label and annotation for testing images successfully. In this paper, we present a novel depth sensation enhancement algorithm considering the behavior of human visual system toward stereoscopic image displays. On the basis of the recent studies on the just noticeable depth difference (JNDD), which represents a threshold at which a human can perceive the depth difference between objects, we modify the depth image such that neighboring objects in the depth image can have a depth value difference of at least the JNDD. This modification is modeled via an energy minimization framework using three energy terms defined as depth data preservation, depth order preservation, and depth difference expansion. The depth data term enforces minimal changes in the depth image with an additional weighting function that controls the direction of depth changes. The depth order term restricts the inversion of the local and global depth orders among objects, and the JNDD term leads to an increase in the depth differences between segments. This paper intends to extend the minimization algorithm developed by Bae, Yuan and Tai [IJCV, 2011] in several directions. First, we propose a new primal-dual approach for global minimization of the continuous Potts model with applications to the piecewise constant Mumford–Shah model for multiphase image segmentation. Different from the existing methods, we work directly with the binary setting without using convex relaxation, which is thereby termed as a direct approach. Second, we provide the sufficient and necessary conditions to guarantee a global optimum. Moreover, we provide efficient algorithms based on a reduction in the intermediate unknowns from the augmented Lagrangian formulation. As a result, the underlying algorithms involve significantly fewer parameters and unknowns than the naive use of augmented Lagrangian-based methods; hence, they are fast and easy to implement. We present an energy-minimization-based framework for locating the centerline and estimating the width of tubelike objects from their structural network with a nonparametric model. The nonparametric representation promotes simple modeling of nested branches and n-way furcations, i.e., structures that abound in an arterial network, e.g., a cerebrovascular circulation. Our method is capable of extracting the entire vascular tree from an angiogram in a single execution with a proper initialization. A succinct initial model from the user with arterial network inlets, outlets, and branching points is sufficient for complex vasculature. The novel method is based upon the theory of principal curves. In this paper, theoretical extension to grayscale angiography is discussed, and an algorithm to find an arterial network as principal curves is also described. Quantitative validation on a number of simulated data sets, synthetic volumes of 19 BrainWeb vascular models, and 32 Rotterdam Coronary Artery volumes was conducted. We compared the algorithm to a state-of-the-art method and further tested it on two clinical data sets. In this paper, we propose a novel outdoor scene image segmentation algorithm based on background recognition and perceptual organization. We recognize the background objects such as the sky, the ground, and vegetation based on the color and texture information. For the structurally challenging objects, which usually consist of multiple constituent parts, we developed a perceptual organization model that can capture the nonaccidental structural relationships among the constituent parts of the structured objects and, hence, group them together accordingly without depending on a priori knowledge of the specific objects. Our experimental results show that our proposed method outperformed two state-of-the-art image segmentation approaches on two challenging outdoor databases (Gould data set and Berkeley segmentation data set) and achieved accurate segmentation quality on various outdoor natural scene environments. In this paper, an iterative narrow-band-based graph cuts (INBBGC) method is proposed to optimize the geodesic active contours with region forces (GACWRF) model for interactive object segmentation. Based on cut metric on graphs proposed by Boykov and Kolmogorov, an NBBGC method is devised to compute the local minimization of GAC. An extension to an iterative manner, namely, INBBGC, is developed for less sensitivity to the initial curve. The INBBGC method is similar to graph-cuts-based active contour (GCBAC) presented by Xu , and their differences have been analyzed and discussed. We then integrate the region force into GAC. An improved INBBGC (IINBBGC) method is proposed to optimize the GACWRF model, thus can effectively deal with the concave region and complicated real-world images segmentation. Two region force models such as mean and probability models are studied. Therefore, the GCBAC method can be regarded as the special case of our proposed IINBBGC method without region force. Our proposed algorithm has been also analyzed to be similar to the Grabcut method when the Gaussian mixture model region force is adopted, and the band region is extended to the whole image. Thus, our proposed IINBBGC method can be regarded as narrow-band-based Grabcut method or GCBAC with region force method. We apply our proposed IINBBGC algorithm on synthetic and real-world images to emphasize its performance, compared with other segmentation methods, such as GCBAC and Grabcut methods. The classic centroidal Voronoi tessellation (CVT) model and its generalizations work quite well at extracting uniformly colored objects, but often fail to handle images with distinct color distribution or strong inhomogeneous intensity. To resolve this problem within the CVT methodology, in this paper we incorporate the information of local variation of colors/intensities and the length of boundaries into the energy functional and develop a new model called the Local Variation and Edge-Weighted Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation (LVEWCVT) for image segmentation. Its mathematical formulation and practical implementations are also discussed and given. We test the LVEWCVT method on various type of segments and also compare it with several state-of-art algorithms using extensive segmentation examples, the results demonstrate excellent performance and competence of the proposed method. This paper describes a novel framework for detection and suppression of properly shadowed regions for most possible scenarios occurring in real video sequences. Our approach requires no prior knowledge about the scene, nor is it restricted to specific scene structures. Furthermore, the technique can detect both achromatic and chromatic shadows even in the presence of camouflage that occurs when foreground regions are very similar in color to shadowed regions. The method exploits local color constancy properties due to reflectance suppression over shadowed regions. To detect shadowed regions in a scene, the values of the background image are divided by values of the current frame in the RGB color space. We show how this luminance ratio can be used to identify segments with low gradient constancy, which in turn distinguish shadows from foreground. Experimental results on a collection of publicly available datasets illustrate the superior performance of our method compared with the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art shadow detection algorithms. Anatomical structure tracing on cephalograms is a significant way to obtain cephalometric analysis. Cephalometric analysis is divided in two categories, manual and automatic approaches. The manual approach is limited in accuracy and repeatability due to differences in inter- and intra-personal marking. In this paper, we have attempted to develop and test a novel method for automatic localization of craniofacial structures based on the detected edges in the region of interest. Before edge detection of the particular region, the region was filtered by adaptive non local filter for noise removal by keeping the edge information undisturbed. According to the gray-scale feature at the different regions of the cephalograms, modified Canny edge detection algorithm for obtaining tissue contour was proposed. With the application of morphological opening and edge linking approaches, an improved bidirectional contour tracing methodology was proposed by an interactive selection of the starting edge pixels, the tracking process searches repetitively for an edge pixel at the neighborhood of previously searched edge pixel to segment images, and then craniofacial structures are obtained. A novel ellipse detector based upon edge following is proposed in this paper. The detector models edge connectivity by line segments and exploits these line segments to construct a set of elliptical-arcs. Disconnected elliptical-arcs which describe the same ellipse are identified and grouped together by incrementally finding optimal pairings of elliptical-arcs. We extract hypothetical ellipses of an image by fitting an ellipse to the elliptical-arcs of each group. Finally, a feedback loop is developed to sieve out low confidence hypothetical ellipses and to regenerate a better set of hypothetical ellipses. In this aspect, the proposed algorithm performs self-correction and homes in on “difficult” ellipses. Detailed evaluation on synthetic images shows that the algorithm outperforms existing methods substantially in terms of recall and precision scores under the scenarios of image cluttering, salt-and-pepper noise and partial occlusion. Additionally, we apply the detector on a set of challenging real-world images. Successful detection of ellipses present in these images is demonstrated. The mixed raster content (MRC) standard (ITU-T T.44) specifies a framework for document compression which can dramatically improve the compression/quality tradeoff as compared to traditional lossy image compression algorithms. The key to MRC compression is the separation of the document into foreground and background layers, represented as a binary mask. Therefore, the resulting quality and compression ratio of a MRC document encoder is highly dependent upon the segmentation algorithm used to compute the binary mask. In this paper, we propose a novel multiscale segmentation scheme for MRC document encoding based upon the sequential application of two algorithms. The first algorithm, cost optimized segmentation (COS), is a blockwise segmentation algorithm formulated in a global cost optimization framework. The second algorithm, connected component classification (CCC), refines the initial segmentation by classifying feature vectors of connected components using an Markov random field (MRF) model. The combined COS/CCC segmentation algorithms are then incorporated into a multiscale framework in order to improve the segmentation accuracy of text with varying size. In comparisons to state-of-the-art commercial MRC products and selected segmentation algorithms in the literature, we show that the new algorithm achieves greater accuracy of text detection but with a lower false detection rate of nontext features. This paper presents a multiphase fuzzy region competition model that takes into account spatial and frequency information for image segmentation. In the proposed energy functional, each region is represented by a fuzzy membership function and a data fidelity term that measures the conformity of spatial and frequency data within each region to (generalized) Gaussian densities whose parameters are determined jointly with the segmentation process. Compared with the classical region competition model, our approach gives soft segmentation results via the fuzzy membership functions, and moreover, the use of frequency data provides additional region information that can improve the overall segmentation result. To efficiently solve the minimization of the energy functional, we adopt an alternate minimization procedure and make use of Chambolle's fast duality projection algorithm. We apply the proposed method to synthetic and natural textures as well as real-world natural images. Human observers understand the content of an image intuitively. Based upon image content, they perform many image-related tasks, such as creating slide shows and photo albums, and organizing their image archives. For example, to select photos for an album, people assess image quality based upon the main objects in the image. They modify colors in an image based upon the color of important objects, such as sky, grass or skin. Serious photographers might modify each object separately. Photo applications, in contrast, use low-level descriptors to guide similar tasks. Typical descriptors, such as color histograms, noise level, JPEG artifacts and overall sharpness, can guide an imaging application and safeguard against blunders. However, there is a gap between the outcome of such operations and the same task performed by a person. We believe that the gap can be bridged by automatically understanding the content of the image. In this paper, we propose a novel 3-D deformable model that is based upon a geometrically induced external force field which can be conveniently generalized to arbitrary dimensions. This external force field is based upon hypothesized interactions between the relative geometries of the deformable model and the object boundary characterized by image gradient. The evolution of the deformable model is solved using the level set method so that topological changes are handled automatically. The relative geometrical configurations between the deformable model and the object boundaries contribute to a dynamic vector force field that changes accordingly as the deformable model evolves. The geometrically induced dynamic interaction force has been shown to greatly improve the deformable model performance in acquiring complex geometries and highly concave boundaries, and it gives the deformable model a high invariancy in initialization configurations. The voxel interactions across the whole image domain provide a global view of the object boundary representation, giving the external force a long attraction range. The bidirectionality of the external force field allows the new deformable model to deal with arbitrary cross-boundary initializations, and facilitates the handling of weak edges and broken boundaries. In addition, we show that by enhancing the geometrical interaction field with a nonlocal edge-preserving algorithm, the new deformable model can effectively overcome image noise. We provide a comparative study on the segmentation of various geometries with different topologies from both synthetic and real images, and show that the proposed method achieves significant improvements against existing image gradient techniques. Lidar waveforms are 1-D signals representing a train of echoes caused by reflections at different targets. Modeling these echoes with the appropriate parametric function is useful to retrieve information about the physical characteristics of the targets. This paper presents a new probabilistic model based upon a marked point process which reconstructs the echoes from recorded discrete waveforms as a sequence of parametric curves. Such an approach allows to fit each mode of a waveform with the most suitable function and to deal with both, symmetric and asymmetric, echoes. The model takes into account a data term, which measures the coherence between the models and the waveforms, and a regularization term, which introduces prior knowledge on the reconstructed signal. The exploration of the associated configuration space is performed by a reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (RJMCMC) sampler coupled with simulated annealing. Experiments with different kinds of lidar signals, especially from urban scenes, show the high potential of the proposed approach. In this paper we present a more efficient approach to the problem of finding the connected components in binary images. In conventional connected components algorithms, the main data structure to compute and store the connected components is the region label image. We replace the region label image with a singly-linked list of line segments (or runs) for each region. This enables us to design a very fast and memory efficient connected components algorithm. Most conventional algorithms require (at least) two raster scans. Those that only need one raster scan, require irregular and unbounded image access. The proposed algorithm is a single pass regular access algorithm and only requires access to the three most recently processed image lines at any given time. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm is considerably faster than the fastest conventional algorithm. Additionally, our novel region coding data structure uses much less memory in typical cases than the traditional region label image. In this paper, we present a fast algorithm for filling unknown regions in an image using the strategy of exemplar-matching. Unlike the original exemplar-based method using exhaustive search, we decompose exemplars into the frequency coefficients and select fewer coefficients which are the most significant to evaluate the matching score. We have also developed a local gradient-based algorithm to fill the unknown pixels in a query image block. These two techniques bring the ability of input with varied dimensions to the fast query of similar image exemplars. The fast query is based upon a search-array data structure, and can be conducted very efficiently. Moreover, the evaluation of search-arrays runs in parallel maps well on the modern graphics hardware with graphics processing units (GPU). In this paper, we propose a method to simultaneously restore and to segment piecewise homogeneous images degraded by a known point spread function (PSF) and additive noise. For this purpose, we propose a family of nonhomogeneous Gauss–Markov fields with Potts region labels model for images to be used in a Bayesian estimation framework. The joint posterior law of all the unknowns (the unknown image, its segmentation (hidden variable) and all the hyperparameters) is approximated by a separable probability law via the variational Bayes technique. This approximation gives the possibility to obtain practically implemented joint restoration and segmentation algorithm. We will present some preliminary results and comparison with a MCMC Gibbs sampling based algorithm. We may note that the prior models proposed in this work are particularly appropriate for the images of the scenes or objects that are composed of a finite set of homogeneous materials. This paper presents a variation of fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm that provides image clustering. The proposed algorithm incorporates the local spatial information and gray level information in a novel fuzzy way. The new algorithm is called fuzzy local information C-Means (FLICM). FLICM can overcome the disadvantages of the known fuzzy c-means algorithms and at the same time enhances the clustering performance. The major characteristic of FLICM is the use of a fuzzy local (both spatial and gray level) similarity measure, aiming to guarantee noise insensitiveness and image detail preservation. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is fully free of the empirically adjusted parameters (α λg, λs, etc.) incorporated into all other fuzzy c-means algorithms proposed in the literature. Variational models have been studied for image segmentation application since the Mumford-Shah functional was introduced in the late 1980s. In this paper, we focus on multiphase segmentation with a new regularization term that yields an unsupervised segmentation model. We propose a functional that automatically chooses a favorable number of phases as it segments the image. The primary driving force of the segmentation is the intensity fitting term while a phase scale measure complements the regularization term. Centroidal Voronoi tessellations (CVTs) are special Voronoi tessellations whose generators are also the centers of mass (centroids) of the Voronoi regions with respect to a given density function and CVT-based methodologies have been proven to be very useful in many diverse applications in science and engineering. In the context of image processing and its simplest form, CVT-based algorithms reduce to the well-known k-means clustering and are easy to implement. In this paper, we develop edge-weighted centroidal Voronoi tessellation (EWCVT) model for image segmentation and propose some efficient algorithms for its construction. Our EWCVT model can overcome some deficiencies possessed by the basic CVT model; in particular, the new model appropriately combines the image intensity information together with the length of cluster boundaries, and can handle very sophisticated situations. In image processing, segmentation algorithms constitute one of the main focuses of research. In this paper, new image segmentation algorithms based on a hard version of the information bottleneck method are presented. The objective of this method is to extract a compact representation of a variable, considered the input, with minimal loss of mutual information with respect to another variable, considered the output. First, we introduce a split-and-merge algorithm based on the definition of an information channel between a set of regions (input) of the image and the intensity histogram bins (output). From this channel, the maximization of the mutual information gain is used to optimize the image partitioning. Then, the merging process of the regions obtained in the previous phase is carried out by minimizing the loss of mutual information. From the inversion of the above channel, we also present a new histogram clustering algorithm based on the minimization of the mutual information loss, where now the input variable represents the histogram bins and the output is given by the set of regions obtained from the above split-and-merge algorithm. Finally, we introduce two new clustering algorithms which show how the information bottleneck method can be applied to the registration channel obtained when two multimodal images are correctly aligned. The Mumford-Shah model is one of the most successful image segmentation models. However, existing algorithms for the model are often very sensitive to the choice of the initial guess. To make use of the model effectively, it is essential to develop an algorithm which can compute a global or near global optimal solution efficiently. While gradient descent based methods are well-known to find a local minimum only, even many stochastic methods do not provide a practical solution to this problem either. In this paper, we consider the computation of a global minimum of the multiphase piecewise constant Mumford-Shah model. We propose a hybrid approach which combines gradient based and stochastic optimization methods to resolve the problem of sensitivity to the initial guess. At the heart of our algorithm is a well-designed basin hopping scheme which uses global updates to escape from local traps in a way that is much more effective than standard stochastic methods. In our experiments, a very high-quality solution is obtained within a few stochastic hops whereas the solutions obtained with simulated annealing are incomparable even after thousands of steps. We also propose a multiresolution approach to reduce the computational cost and enhance the search for a global minimum.
