A study was conducted to examine a new image coding technique, which utilizes the statistical properties of the reconstruction errors and developed based on an L(super infinity) norm criterion. Results show that this proposed approach provides easy and efficient lossless coding. Furthermore, this image coding technique was observed to be capable of supporting progressive shifting from lossless compression to a lossy one.
