In this paper, a new nonisolated high step-up dc–dc converter is proposed. Active–passive inductor cells (APICs) are used to extend the topology. The ability to achieve high gains is the main merit of the proposed topology. The proposed converter operates based on parallel charging and series discharging of the inductors. The converter also achieves high step-up voltage gain with appropriate duty cycle and low voltage and current stress on the power switches and diodes. The proposed converter is analyzed in operation modes. The main parameters of the converter such as voltage gain, voltage stress of semiconductor devices are calculated to compare with other structures. Considering the output voltage ripple and filter size, the proposed converter is designed. Moreover, the losses and efficiency of the converter are calculated. Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) exhibit advantageous features such as low inertia, fault tolerance, high efficiency, and simple design. However, its control is fairly complex due to nonlinear characteristics of the magnetic flux linkage seen on the stator windings. Several memory and/or processor intensive solutions have been proposed to deal with the control problem, constraining the use of the motor to high-cost and high-performance applications. The focus of this paper is to develop a simple controller for the SRM based on state-switching digital control. The concept of state-switching digital control is to control the motor state (speed) by applying a high or a low energy pulse—above and below the desired steady state of the motor. Such a controller can be implemented in low-complexity analog circuitry. This paper presents two methods of motor control: one for single-speed applications and another for variable speed applications. In this paper, a nonisolated bidirectional dc–dc converter is presented. The proposed converter consists of two boost converters to enhance the voltage gain. Four power switches with their body diodes are employed in the proposed converter. Also, two inductors and a capacitor are used as passive components. The input current is divided to the inductors which causes the efficiency to be high. The voltage gain of the proposed converter is higher than the conventional cascaded bidirectional buck/boost converter (CCBC) in step-up mode. Besides, the voltage gain in step-down mode is lower than CCBC. Besides, the efficiency of the proposed converter more than CCBC while the total stress on active switches are same. The simple structure of the proposed converter causes its control to be easy. The steady-state analysis of the proposed converter is discussed in this paper thoroughly. The stress on converters’ devices and the efficiency of the proposed converter and CCBC are compared in this paper. Two three-level inverters driving an open-end winding induction motor can generate equivalent voltage waveforms as a single five-level inverter-based drive. In addition, it can bring in benefits such as reduced dc-link voltage, less number of devices, and fault-tolerant capability, which is favored in high-power motor drive applications. The main challenge with this type of configuration is the appearance of large zero-sequence current circulating between the two inverters, which generates extra losses in the switching devices and the motor as well as affects the normal operation of the machine. Another challenge is to balance the dc-link neutral point voltage of the two three-level inverters. This paper has proposed a simplified decoupled space-vector pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) strategy to eliminate the averaged zero-sequence voltage in each switching cycle by the placement of redundant vectors of each individual inverter using a time shift. Neutral point voltage balance is further achieved by adjusting the time duration of the redundant vectors. In this paper, it is shown that it is possible to operate this kind of drive configuration with a single dc power supply and achieve averaged zero-sequence voltage elimination and neutral-point voltage balancing at the same time. Phase-shifted carrier modulation is an industry standard in its application to multilevel H-bridge converters. The major advantage of this scheme over level-shifted and space vector modulation schemes is its inherent ability to evenly distribute losses between semiconductor devices. However, phase-shifted schemes suffer from harmonic degradation when operated at the low carrier frequencies required in high-power high-level number applications. This paper develops a model predictive modulation (MPM) scheme that achieves superior harmonic performance, compared to phase-shifted modulation, while ensuring equal semiconductor loss distribution. With respect to complete-enumeration-based predictive techniques, the proposed modulation significantly reduces the number of times the system cost function is evaluated. Reducing the number of calculations by several orders of magnitude ensures computational feasibility. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the current-stress optimization and soft-switching operation of the isolated bidirectional dual active bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter with the unified triple-phase-shift (UTPS) control. On this basis, the current-stress-optimized modulation scheme is proposed for DAB, which leads to the minimum current stress with the required transmission power and voltage conversion ratio in the whole load range. Moreover, the full soft-switching operation is achieved for the converter simultaneously. Distinct from the previous modulation schemes, the proposed optimized modulation scheme is deduced from a unified analysis of TPS where all effective switching modes are investigated. A novel algorithm based on the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions is originally proposed to derive closed-form solutions for the global optimal control parameters. This paper also presents a typical closed-loop control strategy for DAB with TPS control and detailed descriptions about the closed-loop operation. A laboratory prototype is applied, and the experimental results validate that the current-stress optimization and efficiency improvement are realized by applying the optimized modulation scheme. Proper use of phase-controlled switching technology by controlling the making or breaking of the circuit breaker (CB) at predetermined phase angles of current or voltage can improve the service life of the CB, avoid relay protection device from mal-operation, and reduce the impact on the power grid when power equipment or load is energized or taken out. This paper proposes a novel phase-controlled switching method to address the influence of residual flux for three-phase wye winding unloaded transformers with three limbs, such as large capacitor variable frequency transformer or mine explosion-proof transformer. The optimal operation phase angle for CBs is firstly obtained via theoretical analysis. A model based on the alternative transients program/the electromagnetic transients program (ATP/EMTP) is then built to simulate the transient procedure of a power transformer during breaking and making. The simulated results confirm that the proposed switching strategy can reduce the excitation inrush current effectively when the unloaded transformers are energized. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. A three-level NPC inverter is completely mature and very well-established topology in high-power applications. However, the three-level NPC inverter has an inheritance problem of the neutral-point voltage unbalancing due to the split dc-link capacitors. This structure can cause large neutral-point voltage ripple. Furthermore, output currents of the three-level NPC inverter are distorted by the neutral-point voltage ripple. Therefore, the neutral-point voltage must be controlled. In this paper, a new DPWM method using two different offsets for the neutral-point ripple reduction is proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed DPWM method is verified by using the simulation and the experimental results. This paper proposes a novel simplified model predictive control (MPC) scheme for interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) drive systems. The control problem is formulated in the $\alpha\beta$ stator flux space. The current–flux relation is eliminated from the MPC formulation and can be implemented as nonlinear map or an affine approximation without affecting the MPC complexity. The model is combined with the Lyapunov-based MPC concept. This scheme is shown to be asymptotically stable using the convex control set (CCS) input constraint with space vector modulation or pulse width modulation and asymptotically set stable using the finite control set (FCS) input constraint (with direct actuation). The stability properties are guaranteed for any cost function that is globally defined and any prediction horizon $N\geq 1$. A conventional asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) converter is widely used for dc–dc stage in low-to-medium power system. However, since the asymmetric operation of AHB converter causes the low efficiency over entire load condition, the conventional AHB converter is not usually considered for the candidate of server power system. In order to overcome the problems of the conventional AHB converter, a wide zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) range AHB converter with a clamp switch and a clamp diode is proposed in this paper. The proposed AHB converter (PAHBC) replaces a low-side clamp diode with a MOSFET switch and adds an auxiliary winding, which changes the transformer turns-ratio. From these modifications and the pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) control of clamp switch, the PAHBC can be designed optimally at nominal input condition and obtains additional dc gain at hold-up time condition. These advantages achieve the high conversion efficiency over the entire load condition. The purpose of this paper is to show that sigma-delta controllers of dielectric charge can be analyzed using the tools of sliding-mode controllers, in the infinite sampling frequency approximation. This allows to study the dynamics of the hidden state variables related to the charge in the dielectric, as well as the reachability and stability of the control method. Furthermore, it is also possible to explain the response of the control bitstream as a function of the dynamical model of the system. This approach not only provides insight into the dynamics of the charge controllers, understood as hybrid systems, it also simplifies the modeling and simulations of the system. It is known that the ripple-based control of a switching dc–dc converter benefits from a faster transient response than a conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) control switching dc–dc converter. However, ripple-based control switching dc–dc converters may suffer from fast-scale oscillation. In order to achieve fast transient response and ensure the stable operation of a switching dc–dc converter over a wide load range, based on a conventional pulse train (PT) control technique, a peak capacitor current PT (PCC-PT) control technique is proposed in this paper. With a buck converter as an example, the operating modes, steady-state performance, and transient respond performance of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter are presented and assessed. To eliminate fast-scale oscillation, circuit and control parameter design considerations are given. An accurate discrete iteration model of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter is established, based on which the effects of circuit parameters on the stability of the converter operating in a discontinuous current mode (DCM), mixed DCM-continuous conduction mode (CCM), and CCM are studied. The traditional space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) maximum voltage transfer ratio (VTR, i.e., the ratio of the output voltage fundamental amplitude to the input voltage fundamental amplitude) is 0.866 in a linear modulation region. In this paper, the output voltage fundamental amplitude and total harmonic distortion (THD) affected by a basic vector and a hexagon vector in traditional indirect SVPWM overmodulation are analyzed. The traditional indirect SVPWM overmodulation usually focuses on the inverter stage to improve the VTR, and there are few methods considering both of the inverter and rectifier stages to improve the overmodulation performance of a matrix converter (MC), including output voltage error, and output and input current THDs. In this paper, a new overmodulation method based on indirect SVPWM is presented. Both the output performance and input performance of the MC with the proposed and traditional overmodulation methods are emulated and tested. Simulation results indicate that the output voltage error and the input current THD are smaller and lower, respectively, with the proposed method. Multiphase machines are well known for their fault-tolerant capability. Star-connected multiphase machines have fault tolerance in an open circuit. For an inverter switch short-circuit fault, it is possible to keep a smooth torque of a permanent magnet synchronous machine if the currents of the faulty phases are determined and their values are acceptable. This paper investigates fault-tolerant operations of an open-end five-phase drive, i.e., a multiphase machine fed with a dual-inverter supply. Inverter switch short-circuit fault is considered and handled with a simple solution. Original theoretical developments are presented. A four-level five-phase open-end winding (OeW) drive topology is introduced in this paper. The drive comprises a five-phase induction machine with open-end stator windings, supplied using two two-level voltage-source inverters with isolated and unequal dc-link voltages, in the ratio 2 : 1. The topology offers the advantages of a modular structure with fewer semiconductor components and has a greater potential for fault tolerance, as compared with an equivalent single-sided four-level drive. Due to the large number of switching states, development of a suitable space vector pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) method can be challenging. Hence, this paper examines the implementation of two-level-shifted carrier-based PWM methods. The effect of dead time on the drive performance is discussed, and it is shown that simultaneous PWM switching of both inverters can lead to degraded output phase voltage waveforms. Detailed analysis of this phenomenon is presented, a solution is proposed, and the modified modulation techniques are incorporated in an experimental setup, at first in conjunction with $V/f$ control. Once the proof of concept has been provided, full field-oriented control is implemented in this OeW drive topology for the first time; detailed experimental testing is conducted, and results are reported. This paper proposes a novel ten-phase fault-tolerant permanent-magnet synchronous motor (FTPMSM) with two stators and two rotors on the same shaft. Furthermore, a concentrated, single-layer, and alternate-teeth-wound winding is adopted to enhance the fault isolation capacity of the motor. In addition, we propose a new approach to the speed control of the developed motor, which takes the electromagnetic torque ripple in the fault switch process into account. The control can guarantee the uniform boundedness and uniform ultimate boundedness of the system regardless of the load disturbance and the parameter variation, particularly for the fault switch process after a fault occurrence before the fault-tolerant control can take effect. Moreover, an optimal torque control is adopted to further improve the fault-tolerant performance, which enables a ripple-free torque operation under open-circuit and short-circuit fault conditions. Simulation and experimental results show that the FTPMSM system with the proposed control strategy has excellent fault-tolerant performance and good robustness. In this paper, a new cascaded multilevel inverter is proposed. For the proposed inverter, two different algorithms to determine the magnitude of the dc voltage sources are proposed. Then, in order to generate maximum numbers of output voltage levels by using a constant number of power switches and/or dc voltage sources, several optimum structures of the proposed inverter are obtained. In comparison with the conventional cascaded multilevel inverters, the proposed inverter is able to generate a high number of output voltage levels by using a lower number of power electronic devices such as power switches, driver circuits, power diodes, and dc voltage sources. In addition, the low amount of blocked voltage by switches is another advantage of the proposed inverter. The accuracy performance of the proposed inverter in generating the positive and negative voltage levels is verified through the experimental results on a 61-level inverter. This paper proposes a new topology for a three-phase open-delta connection ac–ac converter based on the switched capacitor principle. The topology employs only capacitors and switches in the power stage, which can provide high efficiency and power density. It operates in open loop with constant values for the gain, duty cycle, and frequency. The converter is bidirectional and thus it can step-down or step-up the output voltages. A 3.5-kW prototype was built, tested and used to verify the theoretical analysis for resistive, inductive, and nonlinear loads. This paper proposes an improved performance interactive distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) to address the limitations of conventional current control mode (CCM) and voltage control mode (VCM) operations. The proposed interactive scheme provides smooth transfer of modes of operation while remaining connected in the distribution system. In normal operation, the DSTATCOM operates in CCM to make source currents balanced, sinusoidal, and at a unity power factor. During voltage disturbances, the CCM operation cannot improve load voltage. In that case, DSTATCOM operation is changed to VCM, which maintains a constant voltage across the sensitive loads. Hence, this interactive DSTATCOM ensures continuous, flexible, and robust operation of the load. Moreover, the filter current requirements are reduced in the proposed scheme, which reduces the losses in the filter and feeder, improves inverter efficiency, and requires a reduced-rating inverter for sag mitigation. The principle of operation and control for both operating modes is analyzed. The detailed process of the flexible transfer between the two modes is derived. Deadbeat predictive control algorithms for CCM as well as VCM operation are developed for fast operation during mode transfers. Common-mode voltage (CMV) is one of the most important issues for the power electronics inverters. An interesting space vector modulation of the three-leg current-source inverter has been reported for the CMV reduction recently. However, it has the disadvantages of the bipolar current pulses and modulation index range limitation. In order to solve these problems, a four-leg current-source inverter with a new space vector modulation is proposed in this paper. With the proposed method, the system CMV can be significantly reduced without bipolar current pulses and modulation index range limitation. This paper proposes a technique to suppress low-order harmonics for an open-end winding induction motor drive for a full modulation range. One side of the machine is connected to a main inverter with a dc power supply, whereas the other inverter is connected to a capacitor from the other side. Harmonic suppression (with complete elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonics) is achieved by realizing dodecagonal space vectors using a combined pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control for the two inverters. The floating capacitor voltage is inherently controlled during the PWM operation. The proposed PWM technique is shown to be valid for the entire modulation range, including overmodulation and six-step mode of operation of the main inverter. By combining the conventional switched-mode power converters with advanced switched capacitor (SC) techniques, a plurality of single-switch current-balancing circuits is developed to drive multiple light-emitting diode (LED) strings in this paper. Compared with the existing current-balancing LED drivers, the proposed drive circuits exhibit their attractive advantages in size and cost efficiency because just one active switch and one magnetic device are required. LED strings' current can be regulated by controlling the duty ratio of the switch in pulsewidth-modulation mode. Both advanced resonant and nonresonant SC methods are introduced to optimize the performance of the proposed LED drivers. This paper proposes an improved half-bridge inverter with wide-input-voltage capability for ozone-driven circuits. The study is motivated because the limited regulation of input voltage often affects the operation flexibility of ozone-driven circuits. Therefore, a modification of a half-bridge inverter along with a multiwinding coil design is proposed in this study, anticipating an increase in the range of input voltage and benefiting the industry applications. To confirm the practicality of this method, a hardware circuit was made with extensive validation. Experimental outcomes support the feasibility of this proposed method for ozone generators, exhibiting a potential of the method extending to other voltage-source applications. A new single inductor dual buck full-bridge inverter is proposed in this paper. The inverter is improved on the basis of a dual buck inverter, and it retains the advantage of a no reverse recovery of body diode. The dc voltage utilization rate can be increased by adopting the voltage commutation bridge instead of the voltage-dividing capacitors in the inverter. In addition, comparing with other dual buck inverters, the inverter has just one filter inductor, which can make the volume and weight of the system decreased observably and improve the integration. The controlling method, combining the high- and low-frequency modulation, is adopted to weaken the complexity of control and improve the reliability and stability of the system. The operating principle, characteristic analysis, simulation and experiment are provided in this paper. This paper proposes a novel high-conversion-ratio high-efficiency isolated bidirectional dc–dc converter. The proposed converter is operated in the step-down stage. The dc-blocking capacitor in the high-voltage side is used to reduce the voltage on the transformer, and the current-doubler circuits are used in the low-voltage side to reduce the output current ripple. The energy stored in the leakage inductance is recycled to the dc-blocking capacitor. When the proposed converter is operated with a step-up function, dual current-fed circuits on the low-voltage side are used to reduce the current ripples and conduction losses of the switches in the low-voltage side. The voltage-doubler circuit in the high-voltage side increases the conversion ratio. The proposed converter can achieve high conversion with high efficiency. Experimental results based on a prototype implemented in the laboratory with a high voltage of 200 V, low voltage of 24 V, and output power of 200 W verify the performance of the proposed converter. In this paper, a simplified pulsewidth modulation with switching constraint control scheme is proposed to eliminate the circulating currents for bidirectional paralleled ac/dc converters in grid-tied system. The proposed control scheme can reduce the circulating currents and does not need additional current sensors and communication device among paralleled converters compared with conventional methods. Therefore, the paralleled system cost can be reduced. In addition, the current shaping and sharing between the paralleled converters can be well accomplished so that the overall performance of the paralleled converter system can be raised. Furthermore, the dc, ac, and self-generated circulating currents are clearly analyzed by graphics, and the synchronous circulating currents are first explored. Finally, a prototype system is constructed, and the proposed control scheme is implemented using a Spartan-3E XC3S250E FPGA. This paper proposes a space vector modulation (SVM) scheme for a three-to-seven-phase matrix converter (MC), feeding a variable-voltage variable-frequency multiphase drive. The main feature of the proposed technique is that it utilizes only 129 out of 2187 possible active space vectors for a successful ac–ac power conversion. Since the number of vectors is significantly reduced, the switching patterns are simplified, and the execution time of the algorithm is shortened. Despite the drastic reduction in the number of active vectors, it is found that there is no significant degradation in the performance of the MC. Furthermore, the SVM also produces balanced sinusoidal input currents with a unity power factor over a wide operational frequency range (1–110 Hz). In this paper, the theoretical analysis is supported by simulation and validated using a hardware prototype. The output voltage can reach up to 76.93% of the input voltage, which is the maximum physical limit of a three-to-seven-phase MC. In addition, it exhibits a better harmonic profile than the carrier-based modulation scheme; the total harmonic distortion for the output voltage waveform is measured to be below 5% over the entire operating frequency range. A self-excited induction generator (SEIG) can be a candidate for isolated applications because it does not require any external exciting power but can independently generate electricity. It is also a good candidate for auxiliary brakes in heavy vehicles for several reasons. First, the power efficiency in a brake system is not important as compared with motors or generators. Second, an SEIG can be controlled by a simple electrical circuit. Third, it can be used for regenerative braking. Finally, it is very robust. In this paper, an auxiliary brake for heavy vehicles is proposed by adapting an SEIG and its analog control circuit. The brake structure is the same as that in conventional eddy current brakes but operates as an SEIG. The suggested control circuit does not adopt an electric controller unit but only consists of simple electric devices. A miniature model was designed and manufactured, and the experimental results using the prototype verify that the proposed brake system, including the controller, is very useful. This paper presents an experimental implementation of a predictive control strategy for a system made up of two induction machines fed by a six-leg indirect matrix converter. The objective is to evaluate the practical feasibility of this method, considering the large computational cost, and to incorporate available market technologies. This strategy achieves tracking of torque, speed, and flux references on both machines, minimizing the instantaneous input reactive power present in the system. A theoretical explanation of the main concepts that are used in the predictive control strategy is presented, along with comments on the experimental implementation, experimental setup, and results obtained under both balanced and unbalanced grid conditions. This paper presents a capacitor voltage balancing control applicable to any multilevel dc–ac converter formed by a single set of series-connected capacitors implementing the dc link and semiconductor devices, such as the diode-clamped topology. The control is defined for any number of dc-link voltage levels and converter legs (for single-phase and multiphase systems), guaranteeing the capacitor voltage control for any modulation index value and load (from idle mode to full power). The associated control loop small-signal transfer function is presented, from which optimum compensator design guidelines are derived. This paper presents a dc-to-dc converter, which offers continuous input and output energy flow and low input current ripple, applicable and mandatory for photovoltaic (PV) arrays and maximum power tracking applications. The PV array yields exponential curves for current and voltage where maximum power occurs at the curve's mutual knee. Conventional dc-to-dc converters have a relatively high input current ripple which causes high power losses when connected to nonlinear sources like PV arrays. The proposed converter maximizes the power that can be sourced from the PV array, without the need of any electrolytic filtering capacitance. In applications where the high voltage gain is required, such as photovoltaic grid-connected system, fuel-cell and high-intensity discharge lamps for automobile, high step-up dc-dc converters have been introduced to boost the low voltage to a high bus voltage. The voltage gain of traditional boost converter is limited, considering the issues such as the system efficiency and current ripple. This paper proposes a class of hybrid switched-inductor converters (H-SLCs) for high step-up voltage gain conversion. First, the topological derivation of H-SLCs is deduced by combining the passive and active switched-inductor unit; second, this paper illustrates the operation modes of the proposed asymmetrical and symmetrical converters; third, the performance of the proposed converters is analyzed in detail and compared with existing converters; finally, a prototype is established in the laboratory, and the experimental results are given to verify the correctness of the analysis. This paper presents a circuit structure with a novel inverter that is applicable to arc welding machines. The output rectifier configuration adopts the current doubler rectifier with two coupled inductors. The proposed inverter topology can keep the energy stored in the coupled inductor until the next commutation interval. Moreover, the conduction loss will be lower, which improve the conversion efficiency of the arc welding machine. In this paper, a new post-fault modulation strategy is proposed to operate the direct matrix converter as close as possible to its desired normal operation under an open-switch fault condition. The proposed strategy determines appropriate switching states associated with eight, out of the nine, remaining healthy switches of the converter, to synthesize the reference voltages. The corresponding duty cycles of the determined switching states are calculated by formulating a nonlinear optimization problem that aims at minimization of the error between the desired reference voltages and the voltages generated by the switching states. The solution to the nonlinear optimization problem is obtained based on the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions. The performance of the proposed modulation strategy is evaluated based on time-domain simulation studies in the MATLAB/Simulink software environment and also experimentally verified. This paper introduces an enhanced commutation method applied to the indirect matrix converter topology. It is based on the detection of the load current polarity so as to cancel the turn-on delay times of the load-side converter's switches. The proposed method allows the grid-side converter devices to commutate at zero current with larger time interval widths provided for this safe commutation. Moreover, it has been shown through experimental results, carried out on a laboratory prototype of the matrix converter, that a substantial improvement of line current total harmonic distortion is achieved. The industrial use of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems is becoming widespread, ranging from monorail systems, motors, people movers, and battery charging applications. This paper proposes a 3-D IPT system driven by a multiple-phase power converter. This is aided by spice circuitry simulation of the power converter, finite-element-assisted software magnetic frequency analysis, and via implementation of the proposed system. The proposed system consists of a cubic power transfer primary window generated by a rotating magnetic flux flow path. In this paper, analytical expressions and design equations are presented for a class-E amplifier with MOSFET nonlinear drain–source capacitance and linear gate–drain parasitic capacitance, along with external linear shunt capacitance. The class-E amplifier characteristics are presented as functions of the ratio of the sum of the external linear shunt capacitance and the MOSFET linear gate–drain capacitance to the MOSFET drain–source junction capacitance when the switch voltage is zero. Although the effect of the MOSFET linear gate–drain capacitance is similar to that of the external linear shunt capacitance on the design of the class-E amplifier with a square input voltage, the difference between their effects should be considered for the sinusoidal input voltage, which is one of the most important suggestions in this paper. Additionally, analytical expressions of the output power capability is given, which is considerably affected by the external linear shunt capacitance. In a photovoltaic (PV)- or fuel-cell-based grid-connected power system, a high step-up dc–dc converter is required to boost the low voltage of a PV or fuel cell to a relatively high bus voltage for the downstream dc–ac grid-connected inverter. To integrate the advantages of the high voltage gain of a switched-capacitor (SC) converter and excellent output regulation of a switching-mode dc–dc converter, a method of combining the two types of converters is proposed in this paper. The basic idea is that when the switch is turned on, the inductor is charged, and the capacitors are connected in series to supply the load, and when the switch is turned off, the inductor releases energy to charge multiple capacitors in parallel, whose voltages are controlled by a pulsewidth modulation technique. Thus, a high voltage gain of the dc–dc converter can be obtained with good regulation. Based on this principle, a series of new topologies are derived, and the operating principles and voltage gains of the proposed converters are analyzed. Filters for switching ripple attenuation are essential at the input, and sometimes at the output for certain applications, for the deployment of matrix converters (MCs). Due to the absence of inertial elements in the MC structure and the consequent tight input–output coupling, the filter parameters significantly affect its dynamic behavior. This paper presents an exhaustive filter design method for synchronous applications of the MC in power systems. Apart from the usual considerations of ripple attenuation, voltage regulation, reactive current loading, and internal losses, this paper also addresses additional constraints which may be imposed by requirements of dynamic performance and reliable commutation. Rigorous analytical justification of each design step is provided and the sequential design process is summarized. Relevant experimental results are presented to validate the proposed design tool. In this paper, a real-time implementation of selective harmonic elimination pulsewidth modulation (SHEPWM) using generalized Hopfield neural network (GHNN) as applied to the single-phase inverter is designed and discussed. Finding the location of the switching instants in the case of SHEPWM involves the solution of a set of nonlinear algebraic transcendental equations. The problem is redrafted as an optimization problem, and it is solved by using GHNN. Though, in principle, the $n$ number of harmonics can be eliminated using the presented methodology, this paper tries for the case of the elimination of the 5th-, 7th-, 11th-, and 13th-order harmonics while retaining the desired fundamental. An energy function is formulated for this problem and the set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) describing the behavior of GHNN is obtained. A program in KEIL C was developed to solve these systems of ODEs by the Runge–Kutta fourth-order method to give the switching instants for continuously varying modulation indexes $(M)$. A MATLAB simulation was carried out, and an experimental setup was also constructed in order to validate the simulated results. The fast Fourier transform analysis of the simulated output voltage waveform and the experimental output voltage waveform confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method. This paper presents a modulation strategy for symmetrical cascaded multilevel converters that simultaneously balances the individual DC voltages and reduces switching losses by eliminating redundant or unnecessary commutations. The voltage regulation is based on a 1-bit digital signal indicating whether the DC link voltage of each H-bridge is above or below the set point. The system command identifies commutations that can be suppressed without causing output voltage distortion, thus reducing converter losses. The voltage balancing is reached by postponing each switching commutation for a short lapse of time. When the precise model of a controlled system is difficult to obtain, a model-free control method is suitable for control system design. The design goal of this paper is to propose a more efficient control method to deal with control systems with unknown system dynamic models and to achieve favorable chattering-free trajectory tracking performance. The cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) is an efficient neural network that can be applied for model-free control systems. This study proposes an adaptive dynamic sliding-mode fuzzy CMAC (ADSFC) system, which is comprised of a fuzzy CMAC and a fuzzy compensator. A fuzzy CMAC using an asymmetric Gaussian membership function is the main controller and the fuzzy compensator can compensate the approximation error introduced by a fuzzy CMAC. Moreover, a proportional–integral-type adaptation learning algorithm is developed to speed up the parameter learning. In this paper, two new topologies are proposed for multilevel inverters. The proposed topologies consist of a combination of the conventional series and the switched capacitor inverter units. The proposed topologies reduce the number of switches and isolated dc voltage sources, the variety of the dc voltage source values, and the size and cost of the system in comparison with the conventional topologies. In addition, the proposed topologies can double the input voltage without a transformer. There is no need for complicated methods to balance the capacitor voltage. This paper introduces a switched-capacitor dc combiner suitable for energy harvesting applications. Since the dc voltage is small, addition of the voltages from different sources can boost the final output voltage with self-startup capability. This approach is valid for any number of dc voltage sources. To prove the energy harvesting principle, three sources are selected. The design of the three-input dc combiner, with no closed-loop controller, is fabricated in 0.13-\mu\textm CMOS technology and the chip area is 1.5 × 1.5 \textmm^2. With integrated tunable thyristor-based differential oscillators, the chip can combine power from all three inputs. Manual frequency modulation is used to deliver the maximum power to the load. The system has proven to be functional even if one or two of the sources is/are weak or not available. Finally, for indoor conditions, the power from three different solar cells is combined where 70 $\mu$ W is harvested with an open-circuit voltage of 1.4 V and the short-circuit current of 160 $\mu$A. In the hybrid ac–dc microgrid, the ac and dc subgrids are connected by bidirectional power converters (BPCs) that play an important role in the load power sharing and power interaction between the ac and dc subgrids. The coordination control and circulating current suppression for the parallel BPC system are very challenging. In this paper, a decentralized coordination control method is proposed for parallel three-phase BPCs, which can suppress the circulating currents, realize proper power interaction, and achieve overall load power sharing in both the grid-connected mode and the islanded mode. This paper proposes an improved dc transformer (NDCT hereinafter) based on switched capacitor with reduced switches for the integration of low-voltage dc energy storage systems and medium-voltage dc power distribution grid. The topology, phase-shift (PS) shoot-through and multiple PS modulations, and voltage, current, and power characterizations, as well as commutation characterization and control strategy, are proposed and analyzed comprehensively. Compared with the traditional schemes, the proposed NDCT not only can enhance reliability and flexibility but can increase voltage adjustment and power transfer capabilities as well. Moreover, the current ripple performance and soft-switching performance are improved, and the number and capacity of switches are reduced, thereby increasing the efficiency and cost of the system. Conventional zero-voltage and zero-current-switching (ZVZCS) full-bridge converters are widely used because they can realize zero-voltage switching (ZVS) for the leading leg and zero-current switching (ZCS) for the lagging leg. However, the large turn-off loss of the leading leg is still unacceptable in high-voltage high-power applications where insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) with current tailing are employed. Hence, it is preferable to achieve ZCS for all IGBTs of full-bridge converters. This paper analyzes the ZCS conditions for pulsewidth modulated (PWM) full-bridge converters and proposes a general strategy for achieving ZCS for main switches, including the control strategy and design method of the topology. Based on this theory, a novel ZCS PWM full-bridge converter with simple auxiliary circuit is derived and tested. It can achieve ZCS not only for the main switches of full-bridge converter, but for the auxiliary switch as well, and obtain high efficiency. The operation principle of the proposed ZCS PWM full-bridge converter and the design procedure are presented. One of the main drawbacks with the use of finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) in power converters is the variable switching frequency. When not taken into consideration, it can vary randomly depending mainly on the operating point of the system and the sampling time. This will produce a wide distributed voltage and current spectrum, causing audible noise, resonances, and poor steady-state behavior. To address this issue, a new algorithm, based on the control of the switching period within the cost function, is proposed in this paper. The algorithm shows to be very effective in achieving a regular commutation pattern, similar to pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques, which is evidenced even by similarities in the sideband harmonics generated in the voltage spectrum. The algorithm is easy to design and implement, demanding very low computation power, and enables a combination of the advantages of FCS-MPC with the benefits of a PWM-like power quality. Simulations and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed method, which are compared to previously reported FCS-MPC techniques dealing with the same challenge. Due to the relatively low output voltage of photovoltaic (PV) source, a high step-up converter with high efficiency is needed when the PV source is connected to the power grid.
