Applying series configuration of the insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) to the pulsed power supplies offers unique features such as compactness and long life time. In the high-voltage pulsed power supplies, a large number of the IGBTs are required to be serially connected. Hence, the safe operating condition provision for the series IGBTs is an important and crucial issue. The effect of the voltage unbalancing factors becomes remarkable when the number of switches in the series structure increases. There are passive and active methods to balance the voltage of the series IGBTs. In both of these methods, an amount of power must be dissipated to remove the effect of the voltage unbalancing factors. Consequently, the power loss is considerable when a large number of series devices are necessary. This paper proposes an effective power recovery system that recovers the power associated with the series stacking of the IGBTs. Using this proposal, the efficiency of the resulted series switch enhances considerably. The power recovery system can be implemented easily for any number of series IGBTs. It consists of a simple dc–dc converter and several interconnection diodes for power recovery procedure. In this paper, the sliding mode control (SMC) design for nonlinear stochastic semi-Markov switching systems (S-MSSs) is studied via the bound of time-varying transition rate matrix, in which semi-Markov switching parameters, stochastic disturbance, uncertainty, and nonlinearity are all considered in a unified framework. The system under consideration is more general, which covers the Markov switching system with sojourn-time-independent transition rate matrix as a special case. Many practical systems subject to unpredictable structural variations can be characterized by nonlinear stochastic S-MSSs with sojourn-time-dependent transition rate matrix. The specific information about the bound of time-varying transition rate matrix is known for the sliding mode controller design. First, by using the stochastic semi-Markov Lyapunov function, sojourn-time-dependent sufficient conditions are developed to guarantee the closed-loop sliding mode dynamics stochastically stable. Then, the SMC law is constructed to ensure the reachability of the sliding mode dynamics in a finite-time level. In the topology of double-inverter fed wound rotor induction machine (DI-WRIM) two voltage source inverters (VSIs) are connected one each on stator and rotor terminals. This leads to ripple in both stator and rotor currents. In this paper, these current ripples are analyzed in terms of the stator- and rotor-flux ripples, which are estimated from their respective terminals. To reduce the current ripples, the VSIs of the stator and rotor terminals are modulated with different pulsewidth modulation (PWM) sequences. The switching loss in the DI-WRIM is also analyzed for the proposed stator–rotor PWM sequence combinations, based on the flexibility of changing the power factor, by changing the flux component of the current fed from either side of a DI-WRIM drive. The proposed PWM combinations with the proposed flux component in currents are found to reduce the stator and rotor current ripples and, the switching losses. The analytically estimated root mean square current ripples for the proposed PWM combinations are validated using the simulation and the experimental results obtained from a 3-kW DI-WRIM drive. Conventional voltage balancers for the bipolar low-voltage dc (LVdc) distribution system have been composed of multiple power stages, which degrade their power density and cost effectiveness. To minimize the power stages, this paper presents a single-stage voltage balancer with high-frequency isolation. This voltage balancer is based on the three-level dual-active-bridge converter. Furthermore, for the proposed voltage balancer, an enhanced switching modulation, using the two switching patterns $\alpha$ and $\beta$ , is proposed to fully balance the bipolar voltage level under unbalanced load condition and even for when one of the dc poles has no load. Besides, a closed-loop control system can be implemented by using output voltage information and proportional-integral controllers. This paper proposes an effective sliding mode controller (SMC) for a grid-connected 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) inverter. The aim is to design a simple controller that deals effectively with the complex control problem of the PUC7 inverter (multiobjective control problem). The selection of the control actions is achieved according to the system state error at every sampling time, regardless of the previous values, which makes the control technique model-independent. The control algorithm evaluates online two cost functions (one for each state error), which are derived on the basis of sliding mode theory, and it selects the optimal control input in order to satisfy the reaching conditions of the two cost functions. Compared with the existing solutions, the proposed SMC technique ensures lower average switching frequency by tuning the hysteresis bandwidth of the capacitor-voltage error. The fast implementation, needless of gains tuning, and simple design procedure are the main features of the proposed algorithm. Simulation and experimental results are presented to prove the effectiveness of the proposed technique in controlling the PUC7 inverter with high dynamic performance and robustness against disturbances and parameters mismatch. This paper proposes a new multilevel inverter (MLI) topology that utilizes trinary sequence for the dc sources. It gives maximum output voltage level with minimum dc source and switch count when compared to other sequences, such as symmetric, natural, binary, and quasi-linear. This is due to the fact that the trinary sequence generates of all additive and subtractive combinations of input dc levels in the output voltage waveform. The concept is implemented on a 9-level asymmetric MLI using only four active devices. Multicarrier unipolar pulsewidth modulation technique is adopted to create the switching pulses. Theoretical calculation of total harmonic distortion in both voltage and current waveforms has been performed using asymptotic time domain formula. This paper presents an improved rotating restart method for a sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system using repetitive zero voltage vectors. To restart the sensorless PMSM drive system, a method for estimating initial rotor position and speed is required due to the absence of sensors such as encoders and resolvers. The rotor position and speed can be estimated using the short-circuit current vectors generated by applying zero voltage vectors. However, the estimated rotor position and speed can be inaccurate. The inaccurate rotor position that causes the current is distorted by the back-electromotive force of the PMSM, and it is impossible to precisely control the system. Therefore, an improved rotating restart method for the sensorless PMSM drive system using repetitive zero voltage vectors is proposed. In this paper, eight ultrahigh-voltage gain dc–dc converters are proposed. These sets of converters are derived by the association of boost cells, coupled inductor, voltage multiplier, switched capacitors, and LC filter cells. The nonpulsating input and output converters are evaluated in terms of: principle of operation, voltage gain, voltage and current stress, estimated power losses, and efficiency. In this paper, closed-loop control and boundary condition for continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode of nonisolated inverting N× multilevel boost converter (MBC) are articulated. Inverting N× MBC combines the features of classical boost converter and voltage multiplier to attain inverting N times higher voltage. Consequently, the inverting N× MBC provides a viable solution for high-voltage step-up photovoltaic applications with low voltage rating reactive components and semiconductor devices. The control strategy with saturation limiter is employed to achieve highly stable voltage. The modes of operation, benefits of inverting N× MBC, and key factors for the selection of semiconductor devices and sizing of the reactive components are discussed. Additionally, the effects of reactive components and semiconductor devices on the output voltage are examined. Experimental results of the developed circuit are presented to validate the design of converter, and effectiveness and robustness of the implemented control algorithm for different input and output side perturbations. In this paper, a voltage sensorless controller is developed for a two-switch single-phase rectifier that involves power factor correction and active pulsating power buffering without electrolytic capacitors. While a two-switch rectifier normally requires four sensed signals for control, only one current sensor is required in this proposal, thereby offering advantages such as low cost, high compactness, isolation between control and power circuits, and improved reliability. While the basic operating principle follows that of a conventional voltage sensorless controller for single-switch converters, several critical design considerations are the key to the success of the implementation which is explained in detail. It is well-known that current and radial vibration harmonic may cause resonance and will thus cause severe vibration and acoustic noise in a switched reluctance motor (SRM). However, not each order of harmonic will cause resonance. It has not been fully discussed which order of current and radial vibration harmonic is the most important. This paper proposes an analytical method to derive the most important order of current and radial vibration, which lays significant foundation for resonance reduction method. Then, influence of different switch angles on current and radial vibration is analytically derived and comprehensively discussed. Based on that, resonance can be reduced by optimal switch angle selection considering efficiency sacrifice. Both simulations and experiments on a three-phase sample SRM have verified the correctness of the analytical method and effectiveness of the optimal switch angle selection method. In this paper, a novel quasi-resonant flyback converter that mainly comprises two modules of flyback converters is proposed. A relay is connected in series to the input terminals of two transformers, and the transformer input structure is adjusted according to the input voltage to improve the conversion efficiency. In addition, a novel frequency-limiting quasi-resonant control strategy for solving the limitations of the conventional quasi-resonant control strategies is proposed, wherein the switching frequency is increased under light load conditions. Here, the current-mode pulsewidth modulation IC is used as the core controller. The operating principle and design parameters of the converter are analyzed and discussed in detail. Model predictive current control (MPCC) can predict future motor behavior according to a motor model. In practice, however, motor parameters will vary at run time, and the parameter mismatch disturbances caused by the variation in motor parameters will deteriorate the MPCC performance. To suppress the parameter mismatch disturbances effectively, this paper proposes a modified MPCC with a current variation update mechanism. In contrast with the traditional current prediction equation that contains crude model parameters, the modified current prediction equation contains only measured information, taking advantage of the proposed current variation update mechanism, which can update the modified prediction equation within each sampling period. A simulation established by MATLAB software indicates that the proposed method can effectively suppress the parameter mismatch disturbances. Satellite dc–dc power converters are required to have electromagnetic interference (EMI) compatibility as well as high reliability. The requirement of high reliability limits the complexity of the structure as well as the number of low-reliability components. In this paper, a conventional active-clamp-forward (ACF) topology is examined for a satellite converter owing to its relatively simple structure, small number of components, and good clamping capability regarding its switch voltage stress. However, it has a pulsating input current shape, a high di/dt level, and high switch voltage stress, which are disadvantageous with regard to the EMI filter size and high-input-voltage converter applications. To overcome these drawbacks, a new ACF topology with a continuous input current waveform is proposed. In the proposed waveform, the voltage stresses on the main switches are relieved, which is crucial to ensure the reliability of satellite FET switches, by utilizing a two-series connected structure. These features allow the proposed converter to serve as a high-input-voltage, high power-density satellite converter. In this paper, 100 W prototype converters with 50 V inputs operating at 300 kHz are built with a high power density of 47.9 W/in3. This paper presents a 5-level inverter topology for open-end induction motor drives by using a single dc source. The open stator windings of the drive are supplied with a 3-level flying capacitor inverter from one end and capacitor-fed 2-level inverter from another end. The voltage ratio of the dc link to the capacitor in 2-level inverter is maintained at 4:1 ratio to generate five-level voltage output. The capacitor in 2-level inverter is balanced by the switching redundant vector combinations from both the inverters while the floating capacitors in the 3-level inverter are balanced by using redundant switching states. The proposed topology gives 5-level operation with less number of floating capacitors and power semiconductor switches compared to other existing topologies. Also, the balancing of the capacitors is independent of load power factor and modulation index. Further, the generalization of the proposed dual inverter scheme for any n-level inverter is also included in this paper. Wide bandgap semiconductors with fast switching speed capability are becoming an enabler to achieve the higher power density design. However, the further increase of switching frequency cannot continuously improve the power quality of ac-side waveforms in dc–ac/ac–dc application. The main reason is the distortion of pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltage at switching point under high switching frequency. In general, there are two contributors causing PWM voltage distortions in bridge-based topologies. One is the deadtime, which occupies higher ratio in the small duty cycle case under high switching frequency and induces the voltage errors. The other one is the turn-off transient in the small load current or around the zero-crossing point of the ac-side current, because the relatively slow rising slope of the drain–source voltage will affect the right duty cycle. To solve this issue, this paper proposes a closed-loop modulation scheme to compensate the duty cycle distortion of PWM voltage based on one-cycle control or charge control. Compared to the traditional feedforward type of compensation, the proposed scheme does not need online calculation and instantaneous inductor current sampling, and it shows potential to be a general scheme for variety of topologies and modulations. This paper presents a lowpass–bandpass triplexer integrated switch using common lumped-element triple-resonance resonator (LE-TRR) technique. First, a lowpass–bandpass triplexer that has one lowpass channel (LPC) and two bandpass channels (BPCs) is designed. The proposed lowpass–bandpass triplexer design method is different from the conventional lowpass–bandpass multiplexer in which the feeding line is designed with lowpass response to combine bandpass structures to form lowpass–bandpass response. In this design, one branch of LE-TRR together with inductors and capacitors and another two branches of LE-TRR together with classical LC resonators are proposed to constitute one LPC and two BPCs, respectively. The LPC design combines the lowpass transformation method and parameters optimization, and two BPCs can be synthesized by classical coupled-resonator filter design theory. The designed lowpass–bandpass triplexer exhibits extremely compact size of ${\text{0.125}}\lambda _{{\rm{g}}} \times {\text{0.086}}\lambda _{{\rm{g}}}$ , and also has merits of low insertion loss, good return loss, wide bandwidth, and high port-to-port isolation. And then, p-i-n diodes are loaded on the lowpass–bandpass triplexer to realize a lowpass–bandpass triplexer integrated switch that combines both the triplexer and microwave switch function. One LPC and two BPCs are able to be switched on/off separately, and the lowpass–bandpass triplexer integrated switch has eight independent states in total. This paper presents the current control design procedure of a single-phase grid-tied five-level packed U-cell inverter (PUC5) with an LCL output filter. The PUC5 inverter is used as an interface of renewable energy sources, such as solar applications. The LCL filter is calculated according to the grid-tied operation and converter ratings. An optimal controller, based on a linear quadratic regulator with integral action, is designed to inject a sinusoidal current with low harmonic distortion at unity power factor. For that design, the PUC5 inverter is modelled in the D–Q frame. The sensorless voltage control is incorporated into the switching technique to balance the PUC5 capacitor voltage and generate a five-level waveform at the output. Experimental tests are performed on a laboratory benchmark to confirm the theoretical design. The results prove the efficiency and accuracy of the adopted control strategy in a steady state and under transients of grid current, grid inductance, ac and dc voltage amplitudes. This paper presents a new highly integrable hybrid step-down converter that merges switched-inductor and switched-capacitor operations and significantly reduces onboard loss by using the input cable's parasitic inductance as its main inductor. This converter has the inductor placed at the input with a smaller voltage swing, leading to possible use of a smaller inductor and low-voltage rating switches that generally translate to reduced conduction losses. Analyses of converter operation and losses to reveal its original characteristics and design guidelines are presented to facilitate the components optimization. The converter architecture is verified by a proof-of-concept 15-W inductor-less lithium-ion battery charger prototype that uses a 1-m USB 3.0 cable as inductor. The converter, switched at 2 MHz from a 5-V input, experimentally achieves 89.7% peak efficiency and 6% higher efficiency at full load than a Buck converter counterpart. This high efficiency and zero onboard inductor yield a relative 45.7% onboard loss reduction at full load, promising excellent integration feasibility and superior system thermal management. This paper presents a unified second-stage LC filter applied in the three-state switching cell buck–boost converter, which provides current and voltage with low ripple and low noise. The unified second-stage filter promotes a reduction in the number of devices while maintaining the filtering performance of the converter, with second-stage LC filters at the input and at the output. Moreover, the unified filter, when associated with a three-state switching cell buck–boost converter, allows a size reduction of filter devices, especially for designs with duty cycle range around 1/2. Furthermore, the unified filter arrangement provides nondissipative clamping of switching devices and reduce the system order when compared to the converter with second-stage LC filters. In this paper, the static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed converter in continuous conduction mode (CCM) are reported. Experimental data were obtained from a laboratory prototype with an input range of 32 $\sim$ 72 V, constant output of 48 V, a load of 150 W, and switching frequency of 45 kHz. The measured efficiency for the rated load was 97% for maximum input voltage. High-frequency link matrix rectifier (HFLMR) is an isolated single-stage three-phase ac–dc converter, which originates from the three-phase matrix converter and inherits the advantages of matrix rectifier such as no dc-link components. In this paper, an HFLMR for more electric aircraft system is proposed. The proposed HFLMR consists of a three-phase input LC filter, a matrix rectifier, a high-frequency transformer, a diode bridge rectifier, and a purely capacitive output filter. The elimination of output filter inductor clamps the output rectifier device off-state voltage to the output voltage and eliminates any RC snubber across the rectifier. A novel symmetric modulation scheme based on space vector modulation is implemented to regulate the switching sequences and provide selective natural zero voltage switching and zero current switching of the devices of the matrix bridge. The proposed converter is more power-dense since it eliminates the dc-link components, output filter inductor, and lossy snubber across the output rectifier devices. A TI digital signal processor TMS320F28379D is used to process the converter signals and generate the gating logic. The proposed converter is validated on a laboratory prototype powered by 115 $V_{{rms}}$ ac with frequency of 400 Hz. This paper proposes a model predictive control based on three voltage vectors for an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor in a rotating reference frame. The proposed method can obtain the reference voltage vector quickly by predicting only one voltage vector during one sampling period using the characteristics of the deadbeat control. In addition, to obtain better steady-state performance, the optimal vector duration ratios can be obtained from the cost function to minimize the error between the predicted reference voltage vector and the synthesis vector by using the switching sequence relationship of a symmetrical three vector, which is different from applying a single voltage vector in the conventional finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC). In this paper, many impedance-source inverters with coupled inductors have been investigated to obtain a high step-up boost ratio. However, the leakage inductors in these topologies induce great voltage spikes at the dc link, which will increase the voltage stress of switches. Thus, the power level of inverters is limited. Furthermore, the efficiency of the inverters can be degraded by the losses associated with leakage inductors. To address abovementioned issues, this paper proposes a family of low-spike high-efficiency Y-source inverters. The proposed inverters have the ability of eliminating voltage spikes at the dc link and recycling the leakage energy via the additional diode and capacitor. In order to show the excellent characteristics of the proposed topologies, this paper compares the performances of the proposed inverters and the improved-Y-source inverter in many aspects. In this paper, a distributed resource allocation problem is investigated based on a continuous-time algorithm in the presence of time-varying communication delays. The considered delays are allowed to take both “large” and “small” delay values in an alternating manner. The “small” delays refer to a class of delays that guarantee the exponential convergence to the optimal solution; otherwise, they are called “large” delays. The existence of “large” delays may affect the behavior of the optimal allocation solution, and the existing algorithms with delays may not be applicable to this kind of “large” delays. To address “large” delay cases, a switched algorithm is first proposed based on switching techniques, and then, such an algorithm is modeled as switched delay systems. Second, by adopting the Lyapunov functional theory, the upper bound of delays is first derived to guarantee the exponential convergence to the optimal solution under “small” delays, and then, a delay-dependent sufficient condition is obtained to ensure exponential convergence of the proposed algorithm based on some restrictions on “large” delays. Power flow control in multiterminal HVdc (MTdc) grids is essential to restrict operation within permissible limits. A current flow controller (CFC) can achieve this. In this paper, the modeling, control, and simulation of resistive, RC-circuit-based, and capacitive CFCs is carried out. CFC prototypes have been developed and an MTdc grid test-rig has been employed for experimental validation. Results show that all devices achieve an effective power flow management. The impact of CFC deployment in future MTdc grids is assessed on droop-controlled converters. In precision motion systems, well-designed feedforward control can effectively compensate for the reference-induced error. Compared to iterative learning control (ILC), data-based fixed-structure feedforward control (DFFC) possesses robustness against reference variations, but results in mediocre performance in exactly repeating tasks. In this paper, a novel data-based switching feedforward control (DSFC) approach is synthesized to well balance the tradeoff between the extrapolation capabilities and servo performance. Specifically, a theoretical framework is developed for the proposed DSFC approach, where the feedforward control is switched between ILC and DFFC according to whether the successive references are repeated or not. When operating in the DFFC mode, a new iterative parameter tuning algorithm is proposed to enable the performance enhancement compared to the pre-existing DFFC and overcome the limitation of the allowable reference variations. Furthermore, an unbiased estimate method for the convolution matrix of the (process) sensitivity function is developed based on the impulse response experiment. No parametric model is required throughout the proposed DSFC procedure, and the optimal parameters of the DFFC mode can be unbiasedly estimated. Experimental results on an ultraprecision wafer stage confirm that the proposed DSFC combines advantages of ILC and DFFC, and achieves high performance for both repeating and varying tasks. This paper proposes the use of an artificial neural network (ANN) for solving one of the ongoing research challenges in finite set-model predictive control (FS-MPC) of power electronics converters, i.e., the automated selection of weighting factors in cost function. The first step in this approach is to simulate a detailed converter circuit model or run experiments numerous times using different weighting factor combinations. The key performance metrics [e.g., average switching frequency ($f_{{\rm sw}}$) of the converter, total harmonic distortion, etc.] are extracted from each simulation. This data is then used to train the ANN, which serves as a surrogate model of the converter that can provide fast and accurate estimates of the performance metrics for any weighting factor combination. Consequently, any arbitrary user-defined fitness function that combines the output metrics can be defined and the weighting factor combinations that optimize the given function can be explicitly found. The proposed methodology was verified on a practical weighting factor design problem in FS-MPC regulated voltage source converter for uninterruptible power supply system. Designed weighting factors for two exemplary fitness functions turned out to be robust to load variations and to yield close to expected performance when applied both to detailed simulation model (less than 3% error) and to experimental test bed (less than 10% error). In this paper, a new Lyapunov-based model predictive controller is proposed for a 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) grid-connected inverter. A cost function of the proposed model predictive controller is designed from the system stability point of view, inspired by the Lyapunov control theory. The proposed controller eliminates the need for gains that are associated with cost function coefficients, as seen in classical model predictive control based controllers. Therefore, the control design problem is significantly simplified. In addition, the average switching frequency is also reduced, as shown in both simulation and experimental results, leading to a reduction in switching losses. Simulation and experimental tests, on a PUC7 lab prototype, demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed control system, in terms of high disturbance rejection, robustness to parameter mismatches, and fast dynamic response. In this paper, a new soft-switching bridgeless single-phase power factor correction converter is introduced and analyzed. Employing an auxiliary flyback circuit, existing dead angle in the input current is eliminated while softswitching is achieved. The flyback converter processes only small amount of output power. Therefore, conduction losses of its bridge diode and semiconductor devices are low. Also, the auxiliary flyback converter provides soft-switching condition for buck switches. All semiconductors are turned on and off under soft-switching condition. In addition to reduction of switching losses, diode's reverse-recovery problems are eliminated due to soft-switching condition. The proposed approach takes advantage of operating under discontinuous conduction mode to shape the input current into sinusoidal form inherently. Experimental results are reported for a 120-W prototype at 110 Vrms input and 48-V output. The results demonstrate efficiency of 93% at nominal load condition. This paper presents an approach for dealing with the control of five-level, diode-clamped rectifiers. The control of such converters is challenging, as voltage balancing among capacitors is not a trivial task. Some of the existing approaches that cope with this problem use specific modifications of one of the traditional modulation techniques, such as using redundant vectors in space vector modulation (SVM). The main feature of the proposed technique is that part of the modulation is considered in the system equations and, in this way, the voltage balance can be solved designing a specific controller for this problem. As a result, several levels are used within a switching period. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed approach hardly affects the control of active and reactive powers and total dc-link voltage in such a way that the well-known direct power control can be applied. As a consequence, the resultant modulation stage is simpler than other techniques based on, e.g., SVM. Thanks to the favorable advantage of low cost, integrated three-port dc–dc converters with reduced switches have attracted extensive attention. In order to provide more new topologies, this paper aims to propose a programmable topology derivation method, which effectively simplifies the cumbersome process of the conventional combination method. Instead of the manual connection and examination, the proposed alternative can quickly and rigorously derive multiple viable integrated three-port dc–dc topologies from a great number of possible connections with the aid of computer program. Besides, generalized analysis is also accomplished, with which performance characteristics of all derived converters are simultaneously obtained and then a comprehensive comparison can be easily conducted to select a preferred one for the practical application. In this paper, a cooperative triple-phase-shift (CTPS) control for the isolated dual active bridge dc–dc converter is proposed first to eliminate the dual-dc side flow back currents. Furthermore, the current characteristics of the proposed CTPS control with the main variable (the primary side inner phase shift) tuned in two different regions are derived in detail and compared with each other. The tuning region of the main variable with the optimal current characteristics is finally determined based on the comparison results. As a result, the current stress is reduced and the efficiency is enhanced. The detailed experimental results of CTPS control verify its validity and practicability. A two-motor drive, supplied by a five-leg inverter, is considered in this paper. The independent control of machines with full dc-bus voltage utilization is typically achieved using an existing pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique in conjunction with field-oriented control, based on PI current control. However, model predictive control (MPC), based on a finite number of control inputs [finite-control-set MPC (FCS-MPC)], does not utilize a pulsewidth modulator. This paper introduces three FCS-MPC schemes for synchronous current control in this drive system. The first scheme uses all of the available switching states. The second and third schemes are aimed at reducing the computational burden and utilize a reduced set of voltage vectors and a duty ratio partitioning principle, respectively. Steady-state and transient performances are analyzed and compared both against each other and with respect to the field-oriented control based on PI controllers and PWM. All analyses are experimental and use the same experimental rig and test conditions. Comparison of the predictive schemes leads to the conclusion that the first two schemes have the fastest transient response. The third scheme has a much smaller current ripple while achieving perfect control decoupling between the machines and is of low computational complexity. In this paper, a model predictive scheme is proposed to control the grid-connected high-power four-level diode-clamped inverter. To predict the future behavior of active and reactive grid power values and dc link capacitor voltages, a discrete-time model of the inverter is developed in synchronous reference frame. The controller uses all the possible switching states of the inverter for the prediction and evaluates them using a cost function. The switching state, which minimizes the cost function, is then chosen and applied at the next sampling interval. The switching frequency minimization is also achieved by including an extra constraint in the cost function. A simplified extrapolation method with reduced computational burden is proposed to safeguard the semiconductor devices during the dynamic changes in reference power values. The performance of the proposed method is investigated with the perturbations in the grid filter and dc link parameters. In this paper, a design method is proposed for finding the equivalent inductance and capacitance of the single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC). The relations of the output voltage ripple (OVR) of the SEPIC converter are obtained in complete inductor supply mode–continuous conduction mode (CISM-CCM), incomplete inductor supply mode-CCM (IISM-CCM), and IISM-discontinuous conduction mode (IISM-DCM). The maximum of OVR (MOVR) is investigated for a specified range of the input voltage and load resistance. This value of the MOVR is obtained for the minimum values of input voltage and load resistance. In this paper, the minimum values of the equivalent inductance and capacitance are calculated in obtaining the minimum value of the MOVR. One of the other performed studies in this paper is calculation of the switch peak current in CCM and DCM. In addition, the converter is designed based on the minimum values of the MOVR and stress of the switching current. The Z-source inverter (ZSI) employs an LC impedance network between the main inverter bridge and the power source. The unique feature of the ZSI is that it can operate either in buck or boost mode with a wide range of obtainable output voltages from a given input voltage. This topology also exhibits better electromagnetic-interference noise immunity when compared to a traditional voltage-source inverter (VSI). However, the LC impedance network of ZSI significantly increases the size and cost of the power converter and can make it unsuitable for low-power applications. This paper proposes a novel topology called switched boost inverter (SBI) which exhibits similar advantages of ZSI with lower number of passive components and more active components compared to ZSI. The steady-state and small-signal analyses of SBI, along with its pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control strategies, have been discussed in this paper. This paper also presents a comparison of SBI and ZSI with the same input and output parameters. The theoretical analysis given in this paper has been validated using a laboratory prototype of SBI, and the experimental results are presented for verification. The experimental harmonic spectrum of the inverter's output voltage with the proposed PWM technique is also plotted and compared with that of a traditional VSI. This paper presents a modulation strategy for the modular multilevel converter (MMC) which provides the voltage balancing of the capacitors of different submodules comprising the converter. Not only is this modulation applicable to MMCs constructed with classic two level (2L) submodules, but it is also effective for arrangements with different submodule concepts, for instance, topologies like neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors (FCs), neutral point piloted (NPP), etc. Therefore, firstly, the general modulation philosophy is explained applied to the two level (2L) submodule concept, and secondly, the extension to 3L-NPC and 3L-FC submodule topologies is analyzed. After that, the validation of the studied modulation strategy is carried out by means of successful simulation results, at different switching frequencies and number of submodules. The corresponding experimental results are shown in Part II of this paper after having implemented the aforementioned modulation strategy in a real test bench. This paper deals with a hybrid fault-tolerant converter topology. It is performed through the connection of a classical three-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped (3L-NPC) converter with a fourth three-level flying capacitor (3L-FC) leg. The 3L-FC leg actively balances the 3L-NPC neutral-point voltage. For normal operation mode, this paper proposes a mathematical design of the filter needed to connect these two different topologies. Experimentally, and thanks to the already existing decoupling capacitors of the 3L-NPC converter, this filter requires the addition of only one low size inductance. When one fault of the power switch of the 3L-NPC occurs, this paper proposes a hardware reconfiguration technique based on only two fuses and one thyristor per leg allows a safe postfault operation recovery. This is achieved thanks to a simple fault-detection method and a new technique that combines fault leg isolation and corresponding phase postfault connection to the neutral point. Also, a dedicated field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based control of the reconfigured converter is synthetized to ensure power system availability under fault operation mode. The converter fault-tolerant capabilities are addressed through simulation results and original overall experimental validations of the fault detection and isolation and the postfault operation steps, carried out on a 15-kW prototype converter. In this paper, an improved direct torque control (DTC) technique of a two-level inverter-fed five-phase induction motor (FPIM) drive for low-speed operation is presented. The operation of the FPIM with distributed winding requires the elimination of third-harmonic voltage, which, if not taken care of, would generate distorted stator current. For this, the concept of virtual vectors (VVs) is utilized. Before selecting the VVs for the DTC operation, a theoretical analysis is carried out to find the effects of these VVs on the torque and flux response of the FPIM under different speed and loading conditions. It is found that the rotor speed plays a crucial role in the selection of VVs. A particular VV has different effects on the torque change as speed varies. This analysis helps in the selection of VVs, hysteresis torque bandwidth, flux bandwidth, and efficient formation of sectors. Furthermore, in this paper, the performance of the FPIM during low-speed operation is improved by avoiding the demagnetization of the stator flux. Multilevel cascaded H-bridge converters have become a mature technology for applications where high-power medium ac voltages are required. Normal operation of multilevel cascaded H-bridge converters assumes that all power cells have the same dc voltage, and each power cell generates the same voltage averaged over a sampling period using a conventional phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. However, this modulation method does not achieve good results under unbalanced operation per H-bridge in the power converter, which may happen in grid-connected applications such as photovoltaic or battery energy storage systems. In the paper, a simplified mathematical analysis of the phase-shifted PWM technique is presented. In addition, a modification of this conventional modulation method using variable shift angles between the power cells is introduced. This modification leads to the elimination of harmonic distortion of low-order harmonics due to the switching (triangular carrier frequency and its multiples) even under unbalanced operational conditions. The analysis is particularized for a three-cell cascaded H-bridge converter, and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed modulation method. In this paper, a new soft switching flyback dc–dc converter with a simple zero-voltage and zero-current switching (ZVZCS) cell is proposed. The auxiliary resonant cell consists of one switch, one diode, one inductor, and two capacitors. It provides ZVZCS not only for the main switch but also for the auxiliary switch at both turn-on and turn-off times. In addition, all the auxiliary diodes and body diodes of the switches operate under full ZVZCS except the output diode which turns off only with zero current switching. This soft switching technique makes the proposed converter have less switching losses which leads the converter to operate in higher frequencies and efficiency. Another outstanding feature of the proposed converter is using the auxiliary resonant cell out of the main power path to have lower voltage stress on the switches. In this paper, a new topology for half-bridge Z-source inverter is proposed. The proposed topology has only one impedance network. Unlike to the conventional half-bridge inverter, the proposed topology can provide zero voltage level at the output. It also increases output voltage level and stabilizes it in the desired value. Capacitor voltage stress in the proposed topology is low, and, therefore, nominal voltage of capacitor and cost decreases. In this paper, the steady-state analysis of the proposed inverter in two new operations which are named synchronous operation of diodes and asynchronous operation of diodes is conducted based on mathematics calculations. A method to obtain high-voltage gains by cascading the Z-network and combining middle inductors is presented that leads to cost, size, and weight reduction. In this paper, a model predictive control (MPC) based on optimal switching sequences (OSSs) for a single-phase grid-connected full-bridge neutral-point-clampled (NPC) power converter is presented. The predictive control algorithm is formulated in terms of OSSs, which was originally proposed to govern three-phase power converters. In this paper, the OSS concept is extended to control single-phase power converters. The proposed MPC algorithm belongs to the continuous control set MPC and is able to provide fixed switching frequency while handling system constraints. The proposed algorithm has been experimentally tested in an NPC power converter prototype. Experimental results show the desired fixed switching behavior in the steady-state condition and the intrinsic fast dynamic provided by MPC during transients. Zero-common-mode-voltage (CMV) operation of multilevel inverters results in reduced dc-bus utilization and reduced linear modulation range. In this paper, a method to increase the linear modulation range for zero-CMV operation without increasing the dc-bus voltage using a cascaded multilevel inverter with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the peak fundamental output voltage can be increased from 0.499 to 0.637  \textV\text{dc} with zero CMV inside the linear modulation range. Also, various pulse width modulation (PWM) switching sequences are analyzed in this paper, and the PWM sequence that gives minimum current ripple is used for the zero-CMV operation of the inverter. The inverter topology with single dc supply is realized by cascading a two-level inverter with two floating-capacitor-fed full-bridge modules. The large number of semiconductors typically implemented in multilevel converters generates large stray inductances in their commutation loops. As a consequence, high-voltage overshoots appear in the semiconductors during commutation which may limit the operation of the converter. The paper analyzes these overvoltages in the five-level active neutral-point-clamped (5L­ANPC) converter, one of the most popular five level converters and employed by ABB in its ACS­2000 drive. Experimental results show overvoltages almost three times higher than those corresponding to a two-level converter. In order to overcome this problem, the paper presents a new 5L­ANPC with the same characteristics (number of semiconductors, output waveform, switching frequency, efficiency, etc.), but with smaller overvoltages. This is achieved by adding some small capacitors to the busbar that behave like lossless snubbers but with a much simpler implementation. The experimental results illustrate the working principle of these capacitors and demonstrate the reduction of the overvoltages. As a result, the new converter can reach a higher output current or speed-up the commutations reducing, therefore, the losses and increasing the efficiency compared with the previous 5L­ANPC. In this paper, a new structure for symmetric and cascade multilevel converter is presented. This structure requires the least power electronic components, gate driver circuits, power diode, and dc voltage source. The number of output levels is high. Reduction of the number of power electronic switches against voltage levels is an important factor in multilevel converters due to safety in switches, circuit size, cost, installation area, and complexity in control. To maximize the number of output level in the proposed optimized structure in order to attain different goals, such as reduction of stress on switches, the result of comparing the proposed structure and other structures present. Model predictive control (MPC) has been widely advocated as a design strategy for many aspects of industrial electronics. The methodology has been strongly promoted by some researchers but has also attracted criticism from others. In this context, the purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we show that many existing and popular control strategies, including finite set MPC and linear controllers [proportional integral, proportional resonant (PR)], can be viewed as special cases of MPC. Second, we show that the predictive control framework allows one to embellish these classical control architectures with novel features and to design new and advanced control architectures to address various challenges posed by power electronics applications. The findings of the paper are supported by a practical example of designing of a novel form of PR controller with superior tracking performance and delay compensation, confirmed via simulation and experiments. This paper presents a model predictive control technique applied to a dual-active bridge inverter where one of the bridges is floating. The proposed floating bridge topology eliminates the need for isolation transformer in a dual inverter system and therefore reduces the size, weight, and losses in the system. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, the floating inverter dc-link capacitor is charged to the half of the main dc-link voltage. A finite-set model predictive control technique is used to control the load current of the converter as well as the floating capacitor voltage. Model predictive control does not require any switching sequence design or complex switching time calculations as used for space vector modulation; thus, the technique has some advantages in this application. In this paper, we deal with a problem of local damage detection in bearings in the presence of a high-energy impulsive noise. Such a problem was identified during diagnostics of bearings in raw materials crusher. Unfortunately, classical approaches cannot be applied due to the impulsive character of the noise. In this paper we propose, a procedure that cancels out impulsive noise rather than extracts signal of interest. The methodology is based on the regime switching model with two regimes: first corresponding to high-energy noncyclic impulses and second to the rest of the signal. We apply the proposed technique to a simulated signal as well as to the real one. Effectiveness of the method is presented graphically using time series, time-frequency spectrogram, and classical envelope analysis. This paper presents predictive current-mode control for a single-phase high-frequency transformer-isolated dual-active bridge dc-to-dc converter. The predictive control algorithm increases the bandwidth of the current loop of the converter which enables tracking of the current reference within one switching cycle. The paper further demonstrates that the application of the predictive control algorithm can remove transient dc offset from the current in high-frequency isolation transformer within one switching cycle. Direct control of the converter current protects the transformer from saturation even at transient conditions. The control algorithm has been implemented on an experimental setup and transient tests have been performed to validate controller performance. Since the predictive control algorithm is dependent on the measured value of the leakage inductance of the transformer, a compensator has been implemented to improve the parameter insensitivity of the proposed controller.
