Multilevel inverters are now-a-days being applied in electric vehicles (EV). Considering the dynamic operating conditions of an EV propelled by an induction motor, this paper proposes a flexible discontinuous modulation strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter that can shift modulation pattern seamlessly from sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) to discontinuous PWM (DPWM). The modulation scheme is generalized at each degree of discontinuity to ensure minimum switching losses for variable load power factors. Additionally, a hybrid voltage balancing strategy, which comprises two sets of compensating offset signals with complementary features, has been introduced to mitigate voltage deviation problem at neutral point of the inverter. The unique feature of the proposed hybrid balancing approach is that it generates uniform compensating neutral current regardless of the level of discontinuity. This results in identical and predictable voltage balancing dynamics for the entire modulation transition covering SPWM and DPWM. It has been shown that the proposed hybrid balancing strategy does not lose its unbalance compensation strength even during transition from one modulation pattern to another. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for wide variations in operating conditions is studied through extensive simulation, and validated in experimentation using a prototype NPC inverter with induction motor loads. Switched-capacitor converter (SCC) featuring high efficiency and power density has attracted industry interest, but weak output voltage regulation hinders its application. This paper presents an optimized phase-shift (PS) control strategy for a bridge modular SCC, utilized in energy storage system, to obtain continuous conversion ratio and high-efficiency operation. By employing a small inductor as current buffer, the control strategy could be implemented to regulate output voltage conveniently with excellent steady and dynamic performance in step-down mode as well as step-up mode. Most importantly, the high-efficiency operation mechanism never reported before is revealed here. Correspondingly, the active circumfluence could be controlled through optimizing the range of PS time, which will avoid the loss in circuit self. Meanwhile, the soft-switching conditions of all the switches are comprehensively analyzed and soft-switching operations are achieved according to the logic timing control of the power devices, improving efficiency further. Wireless power transfer with a self-tuning LCC inverter using pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controlled switched capacitor is proposed in this paper in order to compensate for the variations of Tx inductance. Usually, receivers contain magnetic and conductive materials for shielding and mechanical support. The inductance of the Tx coil is sensitive to the variation of Tx–Rx alignment because the interaction between the Tx coil and the Rx magnetic–conductive materials is also varied. It is shown that the detuning of the Tx inductance value exacerbates the losses in the LCC inverter. In the proposed method, the PWM duty ratio of a single capacitor adjusts the effective output impedance of the LCC inverter. The PWM feedback loop is designed such that the power factor and the real-part impedance of the LCC inverter are maximized. The PWM switch is turned on at zero voltage and turned off with low dv/dt, minimizing switching losses. Such a soft-switching tunable capacitor can handle higher power compared to the traditional hard-switching capacitor, p-n junction capacitor, or an analog IC capacitor. Another advantage of the proposed technique is the continuity in achievable capacitance value using only one capacitor. The feedback can be fully implemented by analog components, obviating the necessity of digital samplings, ADC/DACs, and microcontrollers. High step-up converters are required for distributed photovoltaic generation systems, due to the low voltage of the photovoltaic source. In this paper, a new hybrid high voltage gain dc–dc converter is created by merging the standard boost converter with a coupled inductor and different switched-capacitor techniques. With a single switch and no requirement of higher duty cycle values, the proposed converter achieves a high voltage gain and high efficiency, in addition to lowered voltage and current stresses of the components. In this paper, a hybrid switched-capacitor/switched-quasi-Z-source bidirectional dc–dc converter is proposed for electric vehicles (EVs) with hybrid energy sources, which has a wide voltage gain range in the bidirectional energy flows. Compared with the traditional quasi-Z-source bidirectional dc–dc converter, the proposed converter only changes the position of the main power switch and employs a switched-capacitor cell at the output of the high-voltage side. Therefore, the advantages of the wide voltage gain range and the lower voltage stresses across the power switches can be achieved. The operating principle, the voltage and current stresses across the power switches, and the comparisons with other converters are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the parameter design of the main components, the dynamic modeling analysis, and the voltage control scheme are also presented. Soft-switching inverters can achieve high efficiencies and low switchdv/dtanddi/dt, but often impose additional stress on the switches due to their resonant behavior. Multicell converters, on the other hand, can process high voltages by arranging the switches to share the stress. This paper proposes a buck–boost multicell soft-switching inverter with inherent cell voltage balancing. Both the current and voltage stresses are shared by the cells. Soft-switching conditions are achieved for all switching transitions without any need for auxiliary circuitry or clamps. A multiple-winding transformer transfers energy between the terminals and provides galvanic isolation. In this paper, a novel buck–boost converter with low electric stress on components and negative output voltage is proposed. The operational principle, steady-state analysis, and small-signal modeling of the proposed buck–boost converter in continuous conduction mode are presented. Comparisons among another five buck–boost converters and the proposed buck–boost converter are presented. It is found that the proposed converter's voltage gain is smaller than the other converters’ in step-down mode. Also, based upon the comparisons among the same kind and same number of components, the voltage and current stresses on the power switch of the proposed buck–boost converter are less than or equal to those of the comparative converters, and the voltage stress on the charge pump capacitor and the switching device power rating of the proposed buck–boost converter are always lower than those of other comparative converters. The efficiency of the proposed buck–boost converter is highest among those converters having the same number of elements. These advantages make component selection for the proposed converter much easier, and it can be used directly in applications needing a negative voltage source. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become a promising topology applied in medium/high-voltage applications due to its advantages. However, there are several challenges in the MMC, such as the appearance of harmonic circulating current. In this paper, a novel two-stage model predictive control (TSMPC) is proposed to suppress the harmonic circulating current. First, the mathematical model of the MMC is discretized to describe steady-state objectives including output currents, circulating currents, summation, and imbalance of capacitor voltages. Then, an optimal control options set consisting of inserted numbers is built by the front stage of TSMPC, while the inserted number applied to the MMC ultimately is selected from the above-mentioned set by the back stage of TSMPC. The proposed TSMPC can not only improve the control performance of harmonic circulating current but also ensure the overall control performance of the MMC system. In addition, a simplified rolling optimization method is proposed to reduce computation from the aspect of simplifying each control option prediction. An optimized search space method is also proposed to design the control options set to be evaluated from the aspect of ensuring the output current tracking and harmonic circulating current suppression. For dc–ac modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in double-star configuration, this paper proposes a fast closed-loop control method based on optimized pulse patterns (OPPs). Thanks to the direct manipulation of the OPP switching instants, OPPs with discontinuous switching angles can be used, and the intrinsic cell capacitor voltage ripple is compensated for to preserve the OPPs’ superior harmonic performance. This model predictive pulse pattern controller is combined with a fast acting dead-beat circulating current controller and linked to an upper layer voltage balancing control scheme. The proposed control and modulation method is particularly suitable for medium voltage MMCs with a low number of cells. Discontinuous modulation applied to modular multilevel converters is an effective method for reducing the capacitor voltage ripples. In this paper, the discontinuous modulation is adapted and used in a motor drive application. For proper operation of the converter, a new energy controller is presented, which is suitable for operation with nonsinusoidal reference signals. Experimental results comparing the discontinuous modulation with other techniques operating at low motor speeds are shown. This paper presents a modified modular multilevel converter with the three-terminal middle-cells inserted between arms and ac-side for medium voltage applications. It is intended to reduce the submodule capacitor voltage ripples by controlling the high-frequency powers flowing among arm branches for low-frequency output operations without common-mode voltage injected in ac-side. Due to the physical connection among the upper arm, the lower arm and ac-side, the middle-cell can be regarded as the excess degree of freedom to modify the dc-side and ac-side characteristics. Therefore, the common-mode voltage in ac-side can be eliminated by the inverse common-mode voltage produced by the middle-cell in ac-side. Moreover, owing to the unique structure of the middle-cell, the middle-cell capacitor voltage also results in a small ripple due to the high-frequency current flowing into it by proper control. Traditional control strategy for a power decoupling circuit typically involves a dedicate ripple power control loop, which makes it hard to achieve satisfied transient performance. Meanwhile, traditional single-phase ac–dc converters achieve active power decoupling function with extra power switches, which inevitably increased the cost of the system. In this paper, a controller based on automatic power decoupling concept is proposed for a dependent power decoupling circuit with no extra switches. Compared with the existing methods, the system controlled by the proposed controller has superior transient performance with simplified controller's structure. The controller parameter's design procedures will also be illustrated step by step with the help of the bode diagram. Conventional two-level as well as multilevel voltage-source-inverter topologies with a hexagonal voltage-space vector structure generate low-order harmonics in the machine terminal voltages when operated beyond the linear modulation range in variable speed drive application. Progressing from hexagonal to a higher sided polygonal voltage-space-vector structure (VSVS) suppresses significant low-order harmonics throughout the modulation range. In addition, the linear modulation range will also be enhanced very near to the base speed. In this paper, for the first time, the generation of a multilevel 24-sided VSVS using a single dc source for induction-motor drives is proposed. A cascaded topology with a dc-source-fed flying-capacitor inverter and two low-voltage capacitor-fed H-bridge cells forms the power circuit. In this paper, new techniques are presented to improve the performance of the optimal switching vector model predictive control. A well-defined analytic technique is proposed for the real-time adjustment of dynamic weighting factors, as well as a new objective function formulation. These techniques provide a dynamic controller behavior, automatically adapted to distinct operating points. This ensures better steady-state performance in different conditions while improving simultaneously the dynamic response. The proposed controller presents a lower computational load than the conventional formulation and its design requires less extensive testing. General guidelines are presented to guide the user in the controller design. In this paper, a family of automatic interleaved Dickson switched-capacitor converters (AIDSCC) and its zero-voltage switching (ZVS) resonant configuration are proposed. Different from the traditional Dickson switched-capacitor converter, the AIDSCC has symmetrical configuration with the features of automatic interleaved input current, small output voltage ripple, and lower peak capacitor voltage stress. To improve the line regulation capability, one small resonant inductor is inserted and two bulky capacitor banks are replaced by two much smaller resonant capacitors, forming the resonant AIDSCC. The transistors are ZVS turned on and diodes are zero-current switching turned off by operating above the resonance. With frequency modulation within a reasonable range, the voltage-gain range of the resonant AIDSCC is expanded significantly, while sacrificing the maximum efficiency due to the higher conduction loss. This paper proposes a novel 11-level improved active-neutral-point-clamped (11L-IANPC) converter for ground power unit (GPU) application. This hybrid topology consists of the 5L-ANPC and the proposed low-voltage submodule. The proposed 11L-IANPC converter possesses only one flying capacitor (FC) and reduced number of high-frequency switches. Hence, voltage diversity and ratings, stored energy, and the number of costly and bulky FCs are significantly decreased. Moreover, operating the augmented submodule at the low voltage and power leads to doubling the number of output voltage levels, whereas the low extra cost and size are imposed on the proposed converter. In addition, suggested sensorless switching method leads to self-balancing of FC and significantly amends the output voltage frequency spectrum. These improvements cause significant reduction in control complexity of the proposed 11L-IANPC converter, remarkable decrease in size of the bulky and costly output LC filter, and improving the dynamic and steady-state performance of the proposed static GPU. Usually, the parallel-compensated inductive power transfer (IPT) topology fed by a current-source inverter is controlled through variable switching frequency and fixed 50% duty cycle method. This enables the system to operate at resonance frequency, which drifts due to load and other parameter variations. Owing to this control constraint, the load requirements are fulfilled by adding extra dc–dc chopper at the output. This paper presents a new control technique for a parallel–series/series IPT network, fed from a full-bridge current-source inverter to meet the load demand directly by an inverter. Therefore, the extra chopper stage at the output side of the converter is eliminated. The control goals are achieved through a two-loop control method, where the inner input current loop controls the source current and the outer output current loop meets the load requirements. The detailed steady-state operation, converter design, small-signal modeling, and control are reported, and experimental results obtained from a 1.6-kW lab prototype are included to verify the mathematical analysis. Conventional power supply systems for xenon lamps have only limited applicability in sintering, because sintering needs to drive the lamp itself as well as enable instantaneous and strong discharge of voltage and current for generating intense light. This implies that, for sintering applications, a method should be developed that would enable instantaneous and strong discharge of energy. In this paper, we propose a new xenon lamp sintering system with an additional capacitor charger and bank. The proposed system features three power supplies. Two power supplies, called the trigger and the simmer, ionize gaseous xenon using a 23-kV trigger pulse output and sustain the ionized xenon gas using a 2.5-kW simmer power supply. The used trigger is also specially designed to conduct high current through its transformer, and it makes the proposed system an outstanding high voltage blocking capability. Another 36-kW power supply charges a 130-mF capacitor bank with a high-efficiency resonant converter. In addition, some components such as the simmer blocking diode and the trigger output capacitor are introduced, because combining different power supplies causes operational problems. These components are analyzed with some circuits that show its features, and finally, the validity of the suggested system was confirmed in two steps. First, the simmer power supply and the capacitor charger were tested for the rated operating performance by using a resistive load condition. As a result, the rated operation of the simmer power supply was confirmed under the 2.5-kW output condition, and the efficiency of the capacitor charger was found to be greater than 96% at the rated 36-kW rated load condition. In addition, a pulse discharge current of 900 A was also observed with the equivalent resistor load through a pulsed discharge experiment of the capacitor bank, which was charged at 1500 V. The trigger power supply, whose equivalent resistive load was difficult to realize, was experimented directly using the real xenon lamp to check the stable trigger operation of the xenon lamp at its 23-kV output pulse voltage. After the verification using the resistive load condition, the real operation and performance of the combined xenon lamp power supply system that includes three kinds of power supplies were finally tested and verified by using the actual xenon lamp as a total system. The conventional design of voltage-source power converters is based on a two-level half-bridge configuration and the selection of power devices designed to meet the full application specifications (voltage, current, etc.). This leads to the need to design and optimize a large number of different devices and their ancillary circuitry and prevents taking advantage from scale economies. This paper proposes a paradigm shift in the design of power converters through the use of a novel configurable device consisting on a matrix arrangement of highly optimized switching cells at a single voltage class. Each switching cell consists of a controlled switch with antiparallel diode together with a self-powered gate driver. By properly interconnecting the switching cells, the switching-cell array (SCA) can be configured as a multilevel active-clamped leg with a different number of levels. Thus, the SCA presents adjustable voltage and current ratings, according to the selected configuration. For maximum compactness, the SCA can be conceived to be only configurable by the device manufacturer upon the customer needs. For minimum cost, it can also be conceived to be configurable by the customer, leading to field-configurable SCAs. A new class of impedance networks is proposed in this paper. The proposed coupled-inductors-based impedance cells, called the series and the tapped switched-coupled-inductors, are employed within the (quasi) switched boost networks. The achieved impedance networks based on the proposed cells offer very high conversion gains with less-than-unity turn ratios (n < 1), which simplifies the realization of the magnetic element and at the same time reduces the number and size of passive components. The high boosting capability is achieved with small shoot-through durations that bring some additional advantages, such as low ratings of switching devices. The circuit analysis and operation concepts as well as a design procedure for the components of the proposed impedance networks are presented. In this paper, a new nonisolated high step-up dc–dc converter is proposed. Active–passive inductor cells (APICs) are used to extend the topology. The ability to achieve high gains is the main merit of the proposed topology. The proposed converter operates based on parallel charging and series discharging of the inductors. The converter also achieves high step-up voltage gain with appropriate duty cycle and low voltage and current stress on the power switches and diodes. The proposed converter is analyzed in operation modes. The main parameters of the converter such as voltage gain, voltage stress of semiconductor devices are calculated to compare with other structures. This paper proposes a novel nonisolated single-input dual-output three-level dc–dc converter (SIDO-TLC) appropriate for medium- and high-voltage applications. The SIDO-TLC is an integration of the three-level buck and boost converters, whose output voltages are regulated simultaneously. Reducing voltage stress across semiconductor devices, improving efficiency, and reducing inductors size are among the main merits of the new topology. Moreover, due to the considerably reduced volume of the step-down filter capacitor, a small film capacitor can be used instead, whose advantages are lower equivalent series resistance and a longer lifespan. A closed-loop control system has been designed based on a small-signal model derivation in order to regulate the output voltages along with the capacitors’ voltage balancing. In order to verify the theoretical and simulation results, a 300-W prototype was built and experimented. The results prove the aforementioned advantages of the SIDO-TLC, and the high effectiveness of the balancing control strategy. In this paper, a three-level quasi-switched boost T-type inverter (3L qSBT2I) is proposed. A new pulse-width modulated (PWM) control method is presented to reduce the inductor current ripple of the qSBT2 I. In the introduced PWM technique, the shoot-through duty cycle is maintained constant to keep the modulation index as high as possible. Then, the only control parameters of the qSBT2I are the duty cycles of the two additional switches. By controlling the duty cycles of the two additional switches, the voltage gain of the proposed qSBT2 I can be improved to a value larger than that of the conventional 3L impedance source inverters. The steady-state analysis, operating principles, and comparisons with the impedance source-based 3L inverters are presented. A 1-kW prototype is constructed to verify the operating principle of the 3L qSBT2I. In this paper, a self-oscillating soft-switched converter for light-emitting-diode (LED) driver application is presented. In the proposed converter, the self-oscillation conditions are provided with a low number of additional components, and this converter provides a zero-current switching (ZCS) condition for instant switch turn-OFF. This converter does not need additional output current feedback because the output current changes only 10% when the output voltage changes by 33%. The self-oscillating part of this converter applies three low-power BJT and guarantees a soft-switching condition. The proposed self-oscillating control circuit can be implemented with a low cost since it does not need any IC and power supply for the control circuit. The proposed self-oscillating circuit detects the proper moment to turn the switch OFF under the ZCS condition. In order to justify the validity of theoretical analysis, the results of the implemented prototype for driving an LED string are presented. The measured power factor of the prototype shows that, although the input current of the converter is not sinusoidal, this converter can meet the IEC61000-3-2 standard at an operating power of less than 25 W, in addition to having a simple structure and achieving the robust ZCS condition. This paper introduces a switched-capacitor dc combiner suitable for energy harvesting applications. Since the dc voltage is small, addition of the voltages from different sources can boost the final output voltage with self-startup capability. This approach is valid for any number of dc voltage sources. To prove the energy harvesting principle, three sources are selected. The design of the three-input dc combiner, with no closed-loop controller, is fabricated in 0.13-\mu\textm CMOS technology and the chip area is 1.5 × 1.5 \textmm^2. With integrated tunable thyristor-based differential oscillators, the chip can combine power from all three inputs. Manual frequency modulation is used to deliver the maximum power to the load. The system has proven to be functional even if one or two of the sources is/are weak or not available. Finally, for indoor conditions, the power from three different solar cells is combined where 70 $\mu$ W is harvested with an open-circuit voltage of 1.4 V and the short-circuit current of 160 $\mu$A. This paper proposes an improved dc transformer (NDCT hereinafter) based on switched capacitor with reduced switches for the integration of low-voltage dc energy storage systems and medium-voltage dc power distribution grid. The topology, phase-shift (PS) shoot-through and multiple PS modulations, and voltage, current, and power characterizations, as well as commutation characterization and control strategy, are proposed and analyzed comprehensively. Compared with the traditional schemes, the proposed NDCT not only can enhance reliability and flexibility but can increase voltage adjustment and power transfer capabilities as well. Moreover, the current ripple performance and soft-switching performance are improved, and the number and capacity of switches are reduced, thereby increasing the efficiency and cost of the system. Microinverters operating into the single-phase grid from new energy source with low-voltage output face the challenges of efficiency bottleneck and twice-line-frequency variation. This paper proposed a multilevel inverter based on bridge modular switched-capacitor (BMSC) circuits with its superiority in conversion efficiency and power density. The topology is composed of dc–dc and dc–ac stages with independent control for each stage, aiming to improve system stability and simplify the control method. The BMSC dc–dc stage, which can be expanded to synthesize more levels, not only features multilevel voltage gain but also partially replaces the original bulk input capacitor and functions as an active energy buffer to enhance power-decoupling ability between dc and ac sides. In dc–ac stage, the control strategy of optimized unipolar frequency doubling sine-wave pulse width modulation is proposed to improve the quality of output waveform. Meanwhile, the multilevel voltage phase has been optimized to further reduce the power loss. Finally, a prototype has been built and tested. Proper use of phase-controlled switching technology by controlling the making or breaking of the circuit breaker (CB) at predetermined phase angles of current or voltage can improve the service life of the CB, avoid relay protection device from mal-operation, and reduce the impact on the power grid when power equipment or load is energized or taken out. This paper proposes a novel phase-controlled switching method to address the influence of residual flux for three-phase wye winding unloaded transformers with three limbs, such as large capacitor variable frequency transformer or mine explosion-proof transformer. The optimal operation phase angle for CBs is firstly obtained via theoretical analysis. A model based on the alternative transients program/the electromagnetic transients program (ATP/EMTP) is then built to simulate the transient procedure of a power transformer during breaking and making. The simulated results confirm that the proposed switching strategy can reduce the excitation inrush current effectively when the unloaded transformers are energized. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. A three-level NPC inverter is completely mature and very well-established topology in high-power applications. However, the three-level NPC inverter has an inheritance problem of the neutral-point voltage unbalancing due to the split dc-link capacitors. This structure can cause large neutral-point voltage ripple. Furthermore, output currents of the three-level NPC inverter are distorted by the neutral-point voltage ripple. Therefore, the neutral-point voltage must be controlled. In this paper, a new DPWM method using two different offsets for the neutral-point ripple reduction is proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed DPWM method is verified by using the simulation and the experimental results. This paper proposes a new isolated single-stage single-switch power-factor-correction (S4 PFC) driver for supplying light-emitting diodes (LEDs) without electrolytic capacitor. In the proposed LED driver, the switch turns on under zero current switching (ZCS) condition. Also, it turns on at a voltage less than its nominal voltage stress, and therefore, the switch capacitive turn-on loss decreases too much extent. The leakage energy is absorbed, so there are no voltage spikes across the switch when the switch turns off. In this paper, operating principles of the proposed driver are discussed, and design considerations are presented. A conventional asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) converter is widely used for dc–dc stage in low-to-medium power system. However, since the asymmetric operation of AHB converter causes the low efficiency over entire load condition, the conventional AHB converter is not usually considered for the candidate of server power system. In order to overcome the problems of the conventional AHB converter, a wide zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) range AHB converter with a clamp switch and a clamp diode is proposed in this paper. The proposed AHB converter (PAHBC) replaces a low-side clamp diode with a MOSFET switch and adds an auxiliary winding, which changes the transformer turns-ratio. From these modifications and the pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) control of clamp switch, the PAHBC can be designed optimally at nominal input condition and obtains additional dc gain at hold-up time condition. These advantages achieve the high conversion efficiency over the entire load condition. In this paper, a single-stage solution for solar photovoltaic (PV) pumping system using a dual-inverter fed open-end winding induction motor drive is presented. The three-level dual-inverter requires a low PV bus voltage compared with its conventional three-level counterpart. This could avoid large string of PV modules and helps in reducing the voltage rating of the capacitors and semiconductor devices used in the system. This may further help in reduction of cost of the system. The proposed single-stage system is operated using an integrated control algorithm, which includes the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), the $V/f$ control, and the sample-averaged zero-sequence elimination (SAZE) pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique. While the MPPT algorithm ensures the extraction of maximum power from the PV source, the $V/f$ control improves the motor pump performance. Furthermore, the zero-sequence current is avoided by the SAZE PWM algorithm. Thus, the integrated control algorithm improves the overall performance of the system. Single-stage power-factor-corrected (S2PFC) power supplies usually suffer from high voltage stress, due to lack of control on the intermediate bus capacitor voltage. In the past, analysis of such voltage stress was mostly based on steady-state condition without providing sufficient explanation during the transient circuit operation. This paper revisits the problem at circuit level and reports that the root cause is due to the inherent negative current feedback property of the output inductor or the transformer operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). Based on the finding, this paper further proposes a new approach to reducing the voltage stress by adding an auxiliary circuit branch to existing S2PFC converters. The additional circuit branch limits the effect of negative current feedback by suppressing the change of output current slope due to change of load. This assists the pulsewidth modulation controller to track the change of load better such that the bus capacitor voltage range is reduced through duty cycle control. The auxiliary circuit branch also reduces reverse-recovery-related losses of the converter under CCM operation. This paper proposes an interleaved buck converter (IBC) with continuous input current, extremely low output current ripple, low switching losses, and improved step-down conversion ratio. Unlike the conventional IBC, the proposed converter has a continuous input current, and its output current ripple is extremely low. The proposed converter has a lower voltage stress in comparison to the conventional IBC and can also provide a high step-down ratio, which makes it a proper choice for high-power applications where a nonisolated step-down converter with low output current ripple and continuous input current is required. Also, the proposed converter can provide current sharing between two interleaved modules without using additional current-sharing control method. All of these benefits are obtained without any additional stress on the circuit components. As inverters are often used in critical applications, reliability is an important issue. In particular, the power electronic switches and gate drivers, the most essential components of the inverter, are vulnerable parts in real live operation. Therefore, this paper focuses on open-switch fault detection for multilevel inverters. When a single-switch open-circuit fault occurs in one of the power electronic switches, the algorithm can detect the fault and the switch that is causing it. The detection is worked out for both a linear resistive inductive load and an induction motor. The proposed algorithm is an extension of an already available finite-set model-based predictive control algorithm. Therefore, no extra hardware or measurements are required. This paper proposes a bidirectional three-phase direct ac–ac converter, with only capacitors and switches in its power circuit and with its operation based on the switched-capacitor principle. The converter presents fixed gain, it keeps the frequencies of the output and input voltages equal, and it operates in open loop with constant switching frequency and duty cycle. The main advantages of the proposed converter are the absence of magnetic elements in the power circuit, the higher efficiency, the higher power density, the higher specific power, the lower cost, and the fact that it can convert ac–ac voltages within a wide frequency range, including dc voltage. Therefore, it is suitable to replace the conventional three-phase autotransformer in industrial, commercial, and residential applications, and it can be designated as a magnetic-less three-phase solid-state autotransformer. The principle of operation, a qualitative and quantitative analysis, the design methodology, and a fabricated example are described in this paper. In order to verify the converter in the laboratory, a prototype with the following characteristics was designed and fabricated: 6 kW, 1.35 kW/kg, 380/110 V, and switching frequency of 100 kHz. Multilevel inverters with dodecagonal (12-sided polygon) voltage space vector structure have advantages, such as complete elimination of fifth and seventh harmonics, reduction in electromagnetic interference, reduction in device voltage ratings, reduction of switching frequency, extension of linear modulation range, etc., making it a viable option for high-power medium-voltage drives. This paper proposes two power circuit topologies capable of generating multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure with symmetric triangles (for the first time) with minimum number of dc-link power supplies and floating capacitor H-bridges. The first power topology is composed of two hybrid cascaded five-level inverters connected to either side of an open-end winding induction machine. Each inverter consists of a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter, which is cascaded with an isolated H-bridge making it a five-level inverter. The second topology is for a normal induction motor. Both of these circuit topologies have inherent capacitor balancing for floating H-bridges for all modulation indexes, including transient operations. The proposed topologies do not require any precharging circuitry for startup. A simple pulsewidth modulation timing calculation method for space vector modulation is also presented in this paper. Due to the symmetric arrangement of congruent triangles within the voltage space vector structure, the timing computation requires only the sampled reference values and does not require any offline computation, lookup tables, or angle computation. Filters for switching ripple attenuation are essential at the input, and sometimes at the output for certain applications, for the deployment of matrix converters (MCs). Due to the absence of inertial elements in the MC structure and the consequent tight input–output coupling, the filter parameters significantly affect its dynamic behavior. This paper presents an exhaustive filter design method for synchronous applications of the MC in power systems. Apart from the usual considerations of ripple attenuation, voltage regulation, reactive current loading, and internal losses, this paper also addresses additional constraints which may be imposed by requirements of dynamic performance and reliable commutation. Rigorous analytical justification of each design step is provided and the sequential design process is summarized. Relevant experimental results are presented to validate the proposed design tool. In this paper, a novel transformerless interleaved high step-down conversion ratio dc–dc converter with low switch voltage stress is proposed. In the proposed converter, two input capacitors are series-charged by the input voltage and parallel-discharged by a new two-phase interleaved buck converter for providing a much higher step-down conversion ratio without adopting an extreme short duty cycle. Based on the capacitive voltage division, the main objectives of the new voltage-divider circuit in the converter are for both storing energy in the blocking capacitors for increasing the step-down conversion ratio and reducing voltage stresses of active switches. As a result, the proposed converter topology possesses the low switch voltage stress characteristic. This will allow one to choose lower voltage rating MOSFETs to reduce both switching and conduction losses, and the overall efficiency is consequently improved. Moreover, due to the charge balance of the blocking capacitor, the converter features automatic uniform current sharing characteristic of the interleaved phases without adding extra circuitry or complex control methods. Among various active cell balancing circuits, a switched capacitor circuit is promising because it can be implemented with low cost and small size. However, when the switched capacitor is applied in the lithium-ion battery, cell balancing speed is generally slow when the number of batteries is high. Therefore, this paper proposes the chain structure of the switched capacitor to increase balancing speed, particularly among outer cells. In this paper, the cell balancing principle of the conventional switched capacitor is explained, and the reason why slow cell balancing of the switched capacitor is shown in the lithium-ion battery is analyzed. To improve cell balancing speed, two circuits with chain structure are proposed. The balancing performance of the proposed circuits is confirmed by computer simulation, and a comparison between conventional and proposed circuits is presented. The theoretical analysis on the cell balancing speed of conventional structures and the proposed chain structure is also shown in this paper. Experimental tests were carried out to verify the validity of the proposed structures, and the experimental results show an improved balancing performance of the proposed circuit. This paper presents a comparison of two modulation methods for the seven-level switched-capacitor (SC) inverter using series/parallel conversion (SCISPC). The SCISPC is a multilevel inverter which has the less number of switching devices than the conventional multilevel inverters. The level-shifted pulsewidth modulation (PWM) (LS-PWM) was applied to the seven-level SCISPC in the previous research. In this paper, the level- and phase-shifted PWM (LPS-PWM) and the LS-PWM are applied to the seven-level SCISPC, and LPS-PWM is compared with LS-PWM for the seven-level SCISPC. The LPS-PWM has both the characteristics of the phase-shifted PWM (PS-PWM) and the LS-PWM. The voltage reduction during the discharging term of the SCs is reduced by means of the shorter discharging period compared to LS-PWM. The voltage ripple of the capacitors is also reduced, which leads to higher power conversion efficiency. High-gain voltage conversion is a feature required for several applications, especially for power processing of low-voltage renewable sources in grid-connected systems. In this scope, the presented paper proposes a novel transformerless high gain step-up dc–dc converter based on an active switched-inductor and a passive switched-capacitor networks. The main advantages of the proposed converter are the high voltage gain (>10), the reduced voltage stresses across the switches and the reduced number of components when compared to topologies that provide the same voltage gain using similar principles. The detailed analysis of the proposed converter and a comparison considering other topologies previously published in the literature are also presented in this manuscript. In order to verify the proposed converter performance, a prototype has been built for a power of 200 W, input and output voltages of 20 and 260 V, respectively, and switching frequency of 50 kHz. A novel high-efficiency resonant light emitting diode (LED) backlight driver with passive current balancing and dimming is proposed and analyzed in this paper. The proposed LED driver achieves uniform brightness of each LED string by the charge balance of the resonant capacitor, which benefits from high efficiency. By controlling the output current of one LED string, the output currents of other LED strings can be controlled via current balancing of resonant capacitors, which makes its control simple. The proposed LED driver uses only one active switch, which decreases circuit volume and simplifies the control. Furthermore, a wide load range can be achieved by controlling the turn-on duty ratio of the single power switch of the LED driver with a fixed frequency. Due to the relatively low output voltage of photovoltaic (PV) source, a high step-up converter with high efficiency is needed when the PV source is connected to the power grid. This paper presents a single-switch single power-conversion (S^\text3 PC) power factor correction (PFC) converter. Using the series-resonant circuit, the S ^\text3PC converter provides bidirectional core excitation for the transformer and obtains higher power capability compared with the conventional single-switch PFC converters. Also, the series-resonant circuit provides zero-current switching turn-off for the output diodes, so that the reverse-recovery loss is alleviated. The regenerative snubber not only avoids the voltage spike of the switch but also recycles the absorbed energy. Because these features are obtained with only a single switch and through single power-conversion, the S^\text3PC converter has high efficiency and simple structure. The control algorithm derived from feedback linearization enables the S^\text3PC converter to obtain good controllability. Also, by using this control algorithm, the proposed converter performs both PFC control and output power control through single power-conversion. With these advantages, the S ^\text3PC converter provides maximum efficiency of 96.4% and high power factor in excess of 0.994. This paper proposes the combination of a novel modified quasi-Z-source (MqZS) inverter with a single-phase symmetrical hybrid three-level inverter in order to boost the inverter three-level output voltage. The proposed single-phase MqZS hybrid three-level inverter provides a higher boost ability and reduces the number of inductors in the source impedance, compared with both the single-phase three-level neural-point clamped quasi-Z-source inverter and the single-phase quasi-Z-source cascaded multilevel inverter. Additionally, it can be extended to obtain the nine-level output voltage by cascading two three-level pulse width modulation switching cells with a separate MqZS and a dc source, which herein is called a single-phase MqZS cascaded hybrid five-level inverter (MqZS-CHI). A modified modulation technique based on an alternative phase opposition disposition scheme is suggested to effectively control the shoot-through state for boosting the dc-link voltage and balancing the two series capacitor voltages of the MqZS. This paper presents a nine-level active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) based multilevel inverter (MLI) topology for grid-connected applications requiring only ten switches. The envisaged structure comprises two parts, namely five-level ANPC unit, and a two-level converter leg whose midpoint is used as another ac terminal. An ad hoc switching state redundancy based modulation strategy is used to ensure that the voltage across the flying capacitor is tightly balanced and is implemented using a look-up table further simplifies the control complexity. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed topology with its control scheme are validated through simulations and experimental tests. Comparison with other MLIs is included to highlight the merits of the proposed topology. In this paper, a priority sorting approach based on simplified model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for modular multilevel converter (MMC). It aims at reducing the computational burden of conventional MPC method while maintaining the system performance, especially under high voltage levels. The proposed approach mainly consists of three parts, i.e., grid-side current control (GCC), circulating current control (CCC), and capacitor voltage balancing control (CVBC). The GCC and CCC are separately designed with simplified MPCs, avoiding the weight factor. Meanwhile, the redundant calculations are eliminated in GCC by considering the desired predicted output voltage of equivalent MMC model. To further minimize the optional combinations of the switching states, the CCC is constructed by utilizing the output of GCC and the arm current. Besides, a novel priority sorting approach is proposed for the CVBC to alleviate the sorting operation. The submodules are divided into three groups according to the detected capacitor voltages. Moreover, the groups are assigned with different priorities based on the arm current, and only one group needs the sorting process. Additionally, a reduced frequency approach is introduced to decrease the power loss in the steady state. Cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverters (MLIs) have been widely used for power electronics systems. While high-voltage blocking across power switches is not a constraint for low voltage applications, the research trend has been oriented to the design of more compact module topologies as an alternative for CHB. Despite the generation of more voltage levels with reduced switch count, the existing module topologies in recent literature take no account of the freewheeling current path during dead-time, thus, inducing multistep jumps in voltage levels and giving rise to undesirable voltage spikes. Addressing this concern, this paper proposes two symmetrical compact-module topologies for cascaded MLI, where freewheeling current path during dead-time is provided for smooth transition between voltage levels to prevent voltage spikes. The proposed 7-level and 13-level compact-modules demonstrated low number of conducting switches for all voltage levels. Comprehensive analysis and comparison with the latest module topologies are conducted. In this paper, two switched-capacitor quasi-switched boost inverters (qSBIs) are proposed. By adding one capacitor and one diode to the qSBIs, the proposed inverters achieve high voltage gain with low voltage stress on active switches, capacitors, and diodes. The proposed inverters can extend to n-cell for voltage gain improvement. The operating principle, steady-state analysis, and impedance parameter selections of the proposed inverter are presented. A full comparison between the proposed inverter and other impedance-source inverters is addressed. A 500-W prototype is built to verify the operating theory of the proposed inverter in both the standalone mode and the grid-connected mode.
