A comprehensive analysis for a family of two-level pulsewidth modulation plus phase-shift (PPS)-modulated-isolated-bidirectional dc–dc converters is presented in this paper. Compared with the traditional phase-shift control, the PPS control features reduced current stresses, reduced conduction losses, guaranteed zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation, and wide conversion-ratio variation range. In this paper, all eight operation modes are revealed, and then the unified solution of the power transmission capability for each mode is proposed, applicable for any two-level PPS converters. Based on the unified solution, component stresses and ZVS operation are analyzed to assist component selection. Most importantly, the control maps for three different combinations of the two-level PPS converters are proposed, to assist converter operation and design in the low-circulating-current region. In the control map, a circuit parameter k is proposed and its upper limit is found, providing a design limit to select switching frequency, leakage inductance, turns ratio, and power level. A new isolated single-stage soft-switching power-factor-correction (S4 PFC) driver for supplying light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is introduced in this paper. In the proposed LED driver, the switches voltage stress and also the dc-bus voltage is limited to the peak of the line voltage. Hence, low voltage rated mosfets and diodes can be used. The efficiency is improved because the switches are turned on under zero current switching (ZCS) condition and turned off under zero voltage zero current switching (ZVZCS) condition. Also, no current feedback is required since the converter provides an output current independent of output voltage. In this paper, operating principle of the proposed LED driver is presented and design considerations are discussed. To verify the theoretical analysis, a laboratory prototype of the proposed converter for supplying a 50 W/70 V LED module from 220 Vrms/50 Hz ac mains is implemented, and the experimental results are presented. In this paper, finite-set model-predictive control (FS-MPC) methodologies for a grid-connected three-level neutral-point-clamped converter are investigated. The proposed control strategies produce fixed switching frequency, maintaining all the advantages of predictive control such as fast dynamic response, inclusion of nonlinearities and restrictions, and multivariable control using a single control loop. The first of the proposed FS-MPC strategies is based on a multiobjective cost function, designed to regulate both the inverter currents and the balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages. The second FS-MPC strategy is derived from the first one, and it is based on a cost function that regulates only the grid current, with the balancing of the capacitor voltages being realized by controlling the duty cycles of the redundant vectors. The proposed control systems are experimentally validated using a 5-kW prototype. The experimental results show a good performance for both strategies, in steady-state and transient response, with a total harmonic distortion lower than \text2\% for the currents supplied to the grid. A nonisolated single-stage electronic lighting system with a high power factor for driving power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is proposed in this paper. The presented topology is based on the integration of a bridgeless boost rectifier with a nonresonant half-bridge converter. Accurate steady-state analyses of the nonresonant- and resonant-based circuits are reported, serving as the basis for designing the lighting systems. The LEDs current is adjusted by means of frequency modulation, being the converter switches driven by complementary symmetrical signals. A small-signal analysis is detailed for the proposed nonresonant scheme, providing fundamental information regarding its dynamic behavior. Also, a step-by-step design procedure based on the performed mathematical analysis is elaborated, allowing the adequate design of the proposed lighting system. This paper proposes an integrated half-bridge CLLC (IHBCLLC) resonant bidirectional dc–dc converter suitable as an interface between two dc voltage buses in various applications including energy storage systems. This converter is an integration of a half-bridge CLLC resonant circuit and a buck/boost circuit. Compared with the traditional pulse frequency modulation and phase-shift controlled CLLC resonant converter, for the proposed convertor, the high voltage gain can be obtained from pulse width modulation. Synchronous pulse width modulation is adopted for the converter, and the switching frequency is equal to the resonant frequency. The CLLC resonant circuit can help MOSFETs to achieve soft switching and high voltage gain. The simulation analysis of the modulation schedule and operating principle of the proposed converter prove that the converter is able to achieve zero-voltage switching or zero-current switching. Adding the auxiliary switches to the conventional H-bridge inverter is an effective way to eliminate the leakage current for transformerless PV systems, such as H5, H6, etc. Inspired by the newly developed embedded-switch H6 topology, a novel embedded-switch inverter (ESI) is proposed in this paper for three-phase transformerless PV systems. First, the operation principle and characteristics of the proposed ESI are analyzed. Second, the common-mode model of the three-phase ESI is established, based on which the main factors that affect the leakage current are discussed. The finding reveals that the switching states with conventional modulation strategy result in high-frequency common-mode voltage, which is the source of leakage current. In order to solve the problem, a new modulation strategy is presented for ESI to eliminate the high-frequency leakage current. This paper proposes a novel autonomous control scheme for equal load current distribution between $n$ parallel-connected, LCL-based, three-phase online uninterruptible power supply (UPS) modules. The control is based on regulating the reference voltage of the filter's capacitor of each inverter as a function of its own output current. The control is achieved without exchanging information between the inverters. The load voltage is maintained fixed at the specified reference value. The control method is fast, precise, and robust against load variations. The validity of the proposed method is verified experimentally and by simulation on a system of two parallel inverters under different load conditions, including step-load and nonlinear load. Active ripple decoupling technique of the single-phase inverter is a popular topic to minimize the dc-link capacitance. However, the existing control methods are based on tracking sinusoidal or predetermined voltage waveforms of the compensation capacitor, assuming the inverter outputs are pure sinusoidal voltage and current. Therefore, the performance of existing methods degrades when the inverter output voltage and current are not purely sinusoidal. Furthermore, the limited dynamic performance threatens the safety of dc-link capacitor when the load changes. This happens, because the inrush ripple power is injected into dc link with small capacitance and the dc-link voltage will suddenly rise up when the ripple power is not buffered during transients. In this paper, a direct instantaneous power predictive control is proposed for the decoupling circuit to buffer ripple power of the single-phase inverter, which combines instantaneous ripple power control with model predictive control to overcome the issues above. The proposed method tracks the instantaneous ripple power rather than voltage or current waveforms. In this way, it can fully buffer all ripple powers in the system even for distorted output voltage and current of the inverter and enables the full utilization of storage capacitor. In addition, model predictive control makes the proposed method have fast dynamic and perfectly compensate ripple power during transients and steady states. The buck-type active ripple decoupling circuit is chosen to implement the proposed method after comparing with another typical decoupling topology. The proposed method is also compared with conventional method using proportional-integral-resonant regulator to track the predetermined capacitor voltage waveform. This paper proposes a family of novel flying capacitor transformerless inverters for single-phase photovoltaic (PV) systems. Each of the new topologies proposed is based on a flying capacitor principle and requires only four power switches and/or diodes, one capacitor, and a small filter at the output stage. A simple unipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique is used to modulate the inverter to minimize the switching loss, output current ripple, and the filter requirements. In general, the main advantages of the new inverter topologies are: 1) the negative polarity of the PV is directly connected to the grid, and therefore, no leakage current; 2) reactive power compensation capability; and 3) the output ac voltage peak is equal to the input dc voltage (unlike neutral-point-clamped and derivative topologies, which requires twice the magnitude of the peak ac voltage). A complete description of the operating principle with modulation techniques, design guidelines, and comprehensive comparisons is presented to reveal the properties and limitations of each topology in detail. The development of a high static gain dc–dc converter with the integration of the voltage multiplier cell and the coupled inductors operating with soft switching is presented in this paper. The use of coupled inductors and voltage multiplier techniques allow the operation with low switch voltage and low conduction losses. The switch turn-on commutation occurs with zero current switching due to the presence of the coupled-inductor leakage inductance. The leakage inductance also reduces the reverse recovery current of all diodes. The zero voltage switching at the power switch turn-off is obtained with the inclusion of only a diode and a snubber capacitor per phase, without the use of auxiliary switches. The soft-switching range is independent of the load and is maintained even with a light load. The theoretical analysis, design procedure, and experimental results are presented in this paper. In this paper, a soft-switching topology is proposed for the bidirectional dc–dc converter. In order to achieve soft-switching conditions, the auxiliary circuits including a small inductor and two capacitors are introduced to the bidirectional dc–dc converter. By generating and keeping a recycle current in the auxiliary circuits, the proposed topology can provide soft-switching conditions for both switches of the bidirectional dc–dc converter in fixed frequency control application. Meanwhile, no auxiliary switches are introduced. Due to the existence of the auxiliary circuits, the proposed topology can also reduce the current ripple in the main inductor. Based on this soft-switching method, a family of bidirectional soft-switching dc–dc topologies is derived. These topologies have the similar structures and the same characteristics. In this paper, a nonisolated dc–dc converter with high voltage gain is presented. Three diodes, three capacitors, an inductor, and a coupled inductor are employed in the presented converter. Since the inductor is connected to the input, the low input current ripple is achieved, which is important for tracking maximum power point of photovoltaic panels. The voltage stress across switch S is clamped by diode D 1 and capacitor C1. Therefore, a main switch with low on-resistance RDS (on) can be employed to reduce the conduction loss. Besides, the main switch is turned on under zero current. This reduces the switching loss. The steady-state analysis of the proposed converter is discussed in this paper. In this paper, a single-phase multilevel ac/ac converter with reduced number of power semiconductor devices is proposed. For the simple case of a three-level converter, only three bidirectional switches and two capacitors are required. The proposed converter provides a highly sinusoidal and regulated output voltage with a simple topology. The efficiency is high because in each state of operation only one semiconductor conducts. The converter can be easily extended to any desired levels in the output voltage to even more reduce the output total harmonics distortion. Another advantage of the proposed converter is that by increasing the voltage levels, the stress on the switches will decrease. Conventional modular multilevel converter (MMC) has severe limitation to operate at low frequency for the application of variable-speed induction motor drive. Fluctuation of submodule (SM) capacitor voltage increases rapidly as the motor speed decreases with rated torque. Finally, it becomes impractical to operate the motor at zero frequency. Recently, MMC-based medium voltage induction motor drive has been proposed to tackle this problem without additional circulating current. However, it does not solve the problem near zero frequency with nonzero motor torque. This paper proposes new method to solve this problem of high peak-to-peak voltage ripple of SM capacitor at all frequencies including zero frequency. Vector control strategy for induction motor is adopted here to have accurate control of torque near zero frequency. First, the problem of low-frequency operation is analyzed. This paper presents three unidirectional step-up ac–dc converter topologies with voltage multiplication on their outputs. The first topology is the hybrid boost rectifier and the other two are novel bridgeless structures, all based on the integration of boost rectifier and the ladder switched-capacitor (SC) cell. The new hybrid structures provide high voltage gain with low voltage stress across the switches, high-power factor, and output voltage regulation. This paper presents the principle of operation, steady-state and dynamic analysis, design methodology, and experimental verification. A different approach is also presented for the design methodology of the SC cell and for the analysis of its influence on the dynamic model. Three 1000-W prototypes with a 220-V input voltage, 800-V output voltage, and 100-kHz switching frequency were designed to corroborate the theoretical study. The best efficiency was 97.1$\%$ in the proposed bridgeless versions and the voltage stress across the switches stands around 400 V. This paper presents a method for small-signal dynamic studies of power systems including utility-scale PV energy systems considering the effects of dc-side components. Existing methods commonly model a PV energy system as a dc source connected to a grid-tied inverter. This paper shows that the dc components of a PV energy system can also contribute in the dynamics of the power system in the range of small-signal studies. The paper first develops the model of a PV energy system by merging the submodels of dc- and ac-side components. Then, a method to obtain the augmented model of the power system including a PV energy system will be explained using a study system. The study system consists of a PV energy system in parallel with a synchronous generator connected to a grid. Then, based on eigenvalue analysis, verified by time-domain simulations, it is shown that the dc-link capacitor, front-end converter, and its controller can introduce oscillatory modes in subsynchronous range of frequencies. This paper proposes an analytical design procedure for the LLCL and the LCCL filters for grid integration of high-power voltage-source converters. The low switching frequency and stringent limits on grid-injected harmonics in high-power applications lead to large smoothing filters. In order to reduce the size and weight, high-order filters are already proposed and wise design procedures with the main goal of minimizing the overall filter size are being suggested. In this paper, the parameters of the LLCL and the LCCL filters are designed in the per-unit system to satisfy the requirements on the injected grid current and at the same time minimize the overall filter size through minimizing the total energy stored in the filter components. This paper presents a low-power batteryless energy harvesting system for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. A dual-mode dc–dc converter is used to harvest the energy of a microscale photovoltaic (PV) transducer and provides energy, in the boost mode, to a super capacitor for storage. In the buck mode, the dc–dc converter provides energy to the load on demand. A piezoelectric transducer is used as a secondary input source to guarantee system self startup. The proposed system includes a smart control to adaptively adjust the number of sensors at the load, leading to better usage of the available energy at any given time. The implementation also includes a programmable switch sizing to optimize the overall system's efficiency for different load conditions. A maximum power point tracking is used to extract the maximum power of the PV transducer under various illumination conditions. The system has been implemented in a CMOS 130-nm technology and tested in various modes of operation. Self startup has been verified, and a peak efficiency of 90.5% has been measured. In this paper, a straightforward plug-and-play voltage ripple mitigator (RM) is proposed. Unlike existing voltage ripple reduction methods, the proposed device can be attached to the dc link of a hybrid ac–dc power system without modifying the host system itself. In particular, a local bus-voltage control scheme is employed to achieve the plug-and-play operation. With the requirement of the dc-link voltage measurement only, this device can be operated as a standalone module. Theoretical analysis and experimental work on a boost-type power factor correction rectification system have been successfully performed to validate the effectiveness of the ripple-mitigating function, the hot-swap operation and the nonintrusive property of the RM. Applying model predictive control (MPC) to cascaded H-bridge multilevel converters, while improving the dynamic performance, suffers from high computation burden due to substantial voltage vectors and switching combinations. In this paper, a simplified branch and bound approach is proposed to reduce the computation of the MPC for a cascaded H-bridge Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM). The underlying optimization problem of the current predictive control is a two-variable integer quadratic programming problem. With the proposed approach, the global optimal voltage vector can be selected within linear time instead of polynomial time. This is achieved by selecting the possible values of one variable as the branch, and enumerating the optimal integer results of each branch. The execution time of the proposed approach and conventional methods are compared to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In this paper, two topologies are presented for the enhanced-boost quasi-Z-source inverters (qZSI), namely continuous input current configuration and discontinuous input current configuration of enhanced-boost qZSI with two-switched impedance networks. Similar to enhanced-boost impedance-source inverters (ZSIs), these proposed inverter topologies possess very high boost voltage inversion at low shoot-through duty ratio and high modulation index to provide an improved quality output voltage. Compared to enhanced-boost ZSIs with two-switched Z-source impedance networks, these proposed inverter topologies share common ground with source and bridge inverter, overcome the starting inrush problem, and draw continuous input current and the lower voltage across the capacitors. A novel hybrid LLC resonant and dual active bridge (DAB) linear dc–dc converter is proposed as bus converter, which can achieve soft switching and constant output voltage gain at both the open-loop light load and closed-loop heavy load conditions. This paper focuses on its continuous-time average modeling in detail based on the dc output voltage, the first order terms of two transformer currents and the resonant capacitor voltage, which results in a seven-order model. Additionally, the total control-to-output transfer function is derived for the proposed hybrid converter dynamic analysis. The experimental results have verified that the proposed model can correctly match the small-signal frequency response, and compare with DAB, the related analysis based on the proposed model shows the novel hybrid converter can have a better output voltage response. A single-phase common-mode transformerless grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) converter, which is based on the integration of two stages, is proposed in this paper. Transformer elimination in grid-connected PV systems has many advantages. It not only reduces cost, size, and weight but also increases the complete system efficiency. Since there is no galvanic isolation between grid and PV array, a leakage current may appear due to the PV parasitic capacitance to the ground, if this is not taken into account in the converter design. This paper presents a dc/dc boost converter integrated with a full-bridge inverter. The integration of these two stages reduces the ground leakage current. The neutral line of the grid is directly connected to the negative terminal of the PV array, eliminating any possibility of leakage current in this terminal. Among various active cell balancing circuits, a switched capacitor circuit is promising because it can be implemented with low cost and small size. However, when the switched capacitor is applied in the lithium-ion battery, cell balancing speed is generally slow when the number of batteries is high. Therefore, this paper proposes the chain structure of the switched capacitor to increase balancing speed, particularly among outer cells. In this paper, the cell balancing principle of the conventional switched capacitor is explained, and the reason why slow cell balancing of the switched capacitor is shown in the lithium-ion battery is analyzed. To improve cell balancing speed, two circuits with chain structure are proposed. The balancing performance of the proposed circuits is confirmed by computer simulation, and a comparison between conventional and proposed circuits is presented. The theoretical analysis on the cell balancing speed of conventional structures and the proposed chain structure is also shown in this paper. Experimental tests were carried out to verify the validity of the proposed structures, and the experimental results show an improved balancing performance of the proposed circuit. This paper presents a comparison of two modulation methods for the seven-level switched-capacitor (SC) inverter using series/parallel conversion (SCISPC). The SCISPC is a multilevel inverter which has the less number of switching devices than the conventional multilevel inverters. The level-shifted pulsewidth modulation (PWM) (LS-PWM) was applied to the seven-level SCISPC in the previous research. In this paper, the level- and phase-shifted PWM (LPS-PWM) and the LS-PWM are applied to the seven-level SCISPC, and LPS-PWM is compared with LS-PWM for the seven-level SCISPC. The LPS-PWM has both the characteristics of the phase-shifted PWM (PS-PWM) and the LS-PWM. The voltage reduction during the discharging term of the SCs is reduced by means of the shorter discharging period compared to LS-PWM. The voltage ripple of the capacitors is also reduced, which leads to higher power conversion efficiency. Due to the inductor–capacitor (LC) filter, a pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) current-source converter may experience LC resonance. The resonance can be excited by system harmonics either from the PWM process or from the grid voltage distortions and hence results in the line current distorted. In this paper, feedback controls using different variables in the LC filter are first investigated and comprehensively analyzed. It is shown that the inductor-voltage feedback or the capacitor-voltage feedback can damp the current oscillations by increasing the damping ratio, while the inductor-current feedback or the capacitor-current feedback is able to suppress low-order harmonics by raising the resonance frequency. On this basis, a group of combined variable feedback control methods is presented by combining the feedbacks of the inductor/capacitor current and the inductor/capacitor voltage. Thus, not only the current oscillations can be damped, but also the low-order harmonics can be suppressed. Therefore, the line current waveform is improved, and the system performance can be flexibly optimized. A practical design method for feedback gains is also presented in this paper. This paper proposes a boost driver with an improved charge-pump (CP) circuit. The CP circuit includes electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) that can keep their voltages at a constant level during motor acceleration and deceleration. By changing the connection between the EDLCs and a supply source with electrical switches in the CP circuit, the driver can adjust its dc link voltage to three voltage levels. The voltage regulator of the driver uses a space-vector modulation (SVM) technique. Space-vector diagrams to adjust the dc link voltage in the driver are proposed. The driver operated in the SVM technique using the proposed diagrams can reduce the harmonics in the output and charge the EDLCs during motor drive operation. Experiments confirm that the driver can control the motor with the same performance level as the conventional boost driver and can maintain its performance level continuously. A new interleaved single-stage ac–dc converter is proposed in this paper to reduce line current harmonics while achieving power factor correction (PFC). The proposed rectifier can produce input currents that do not have deadband regions with high PFC, operate with a continuous output current, and minimize the input electromagnetic interference filter size. While tidal stream patterns of natural channels are essentially consistent and smooth, coastal tidal flows experience much more radical speed variations. This paper proposes a new converter control strategy for maximum power extraction of the fast-changing currents that are typically seen in open waters and near the shore. The proposed method makes use of variable-speed generation and has the ability to adapt to the nature of different tidal flows, thus enabling efficient exploitation of resources that require faster dynamic responses. The main motivation behind this study has been the exploration of the possibility of combined offshore wind–tidal cogeneration. The aspects discussed in this paper include interdependences between the injection of the fluctuating generated power, grid-tie connection, and maximum power capture with a view to addressing energy conversion and power quality requirements. Detailed insights into this novel power generation system are provided with a case study that involves a method for maximum power point tracking and power injection controls in a nonstiff network. Three-level active neutral-point-clamped (NPC) (ANPC) (3L-ANPC) voltage-source converters (3L-ANPC VSCs) offer three additional switch states and an increase of commutations by a factor of four, compared to the three-level NPC voltage-source converter. This paper presents, for the first time, a detailed analysis of all 3L-ANPC VSC commutations using high-power 5SHY55L4500 integrated gate-commutated thyristors. Starting with a description of the switching states and commutations, a new 3-kV 5-kA medium-voltage 3L-ANPC testbench is described. To verify the function of all commutations, this paper derives suitable switching sequences and analyzes the commutations and switching transients in detail for dc-link voltages of 2.13–2.43 kV and load currents of 3.95–4.36 kA. The experimental investigations show that, although the ANPC commutations substantially differ from NPC commutations, the ANPC commutations do not present critical operating conditions for the power semiconductors or the converters. The main objective of this paper is to examine the operation of a fundamental buck-based three-phase single-stage ac–dc full-bridge converter. In this paper, the operation of this fundamental converter is explained and analyzed, and a procedure for the design of its key components is derived and demonstrated with an example. The performance and characteristics of the converter are shown with experimental results that have been obtained from a prototype, and general concluding remarks comparing buck-based and boost-based three-phase single-stage ac–dc full-bridge converters are made. This paper is the continuation of part I in which a modulation strategy for the modular multilevel converter, which provides voltage balancing of the capacitors of different submodules comprising the converter, is presented. Here, the validation of the studied modulation strategy is carried out by means of successful experimental results in a downscaled real test bench. First, the converter submodules are 2L topologies, and then the connections are changed to configure 3L-FC submodules showing the effectiveness and implementability of the proposed modulation in different submodule concepts. Finally, a comparison based on thermal analysis and sizing of elements among 2L, 2L serializing several insulated gate bipolar transistors per valve, 3L-FC, and 3L-NPC submodule concepts is made. The steady-state performance of modular multilevel converter (MMC) can be optimized by the following methods: circulating current injection, third-harmonic signal injection, and average capacitor voltage control. However, most of the papers, due to the deficiencies of their MMC models, are limited to the study of adopting just one method and only optimizing a single-aspect of the performance. Thus, this article proposes a general MMC model for the comprehensive study of the steady-state performance optimization. The general model is built based on an equilibrium equation between the internal quantities and the external quantities of the MMC. This general model is capable of analyzing the optimization where the optimizing methods are combined and used to improve the multiaspect performance of the MMC. In addition, more influence factors are taken into account; hence, the calculation error can be smaller than 1% and even the minor effect of each optimizing method can be reflected. The proposed model is compared with traditional models; and it is found that both dc and fundamental components in modulation signals will be affected by the injected circulating current, rather than the constant values in the traditional models. To reduce stored capacitor energy in modular multilevel converters (MMCs), previous papers propose injection of harmonics in the arm circulating currents and zero-sequence voltages. While this approach is effective, previously utilized combinations of injected harmonics significantly increase converter current ratings. In contrast, the optimization approach developed in this article identifies harmonics that simultaneously achieve capacitor energy optimization and reduced overrating of converter currents. In addition, the proposed approach eliminates the possibility of convergence to local minima, which is a significant improvement on previously proposed nonconvex optimization approaches. This paper proposes a method to boost the terminal voltages using a capacitive network. The boosted voltage can improve the power capability of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). In the conventional drive system fed by a voltage-source inverter, the terminal voltages of the motor are limited by the dc-link voltage. Such a voltage limitation reduces the torque capability at high speeds. Thereby, the maximum output power is limited. To overcome this feature, series capacitor network between the inverter and the motor is introduced in the proposed IPMSM drive system. The series capacitors boost the motor terminal voltages higher than the inverter voltages to increase the rated speed, resulting in improved power capability. The rated speed in the proposed drive system can be redefined to the desired value through a capacitive network. The enhanced power capability and design freedom in the rated speed are particularly advantageous in fan-load applications where the load torque is proportional to the square of speed. This article presents the structure, d–q equivalent model, operating characteristics, and operable area of the proposed drive. In this paper, a novel current fed hybrid dual active bridge dc–dc converter is proposed, which is suitable for a low-voltage fuel cell power conditioning system. The high-frequency input current ripple can be reduced to minimum because the input side switches are always switched at 50% duty cycles in spite of the fuel cell voltage and the load variation. Notch filter is used in the voltage feedback path to reduce the low-frequency input current ripple when interfaced with a single-phase inverter load. All of the power devices can achieve zero voltage switching by the proposed control strategy. The mode analysis, the operation principle, zero-voltage switching (ZVS) conditions, and parameter design are given in this paper. Resonant modular multilevel converters (RMMCs) have been proposed for high-voltage dc–dc applications. Using different modulation strategies, RMMC operates in different modes and achieves flexible step ratio. To provide a comprehensive study of RMMCs, this paper presents the modulation method achieving a wide range of step ratio with the ability of inherent-balancing. The conditions for guaranteeing the inherent-balancing ability are provided. The operation principle and performance of the RMMC are presented in this paper, which have been explored in a case study. A well-known issue of fuel-cell-powered single-phase uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) is that the input current from the dc source is coupled with the second-order current ripple due to the ac-side instantaneous power pulsating at twice the line frequency. The low-frequency ripple component has been confirmed to have detrimental impacts on fuel cell's reliability and lifespan. To solve this issue, a boost inverter that can work in both differential mode (DM) and common mode (CM) operations is adopted by this paper. The DM operation achieves active power conversion and a well-regulated ac output voltage. Meanwhile, the CM operation ensures effective dc current ripple reduction. In addition to operating with linear loads, the proposed control method extends its working scope to nonlinear loads, where meticulously designed repetitive controllers are employed to handle the multiple low-harmonic situations. Moreover, the proposed control method also introduces an interleaved pulse-width modulation to further reduce the switching frequency ripple in the dc current. The stability of the proposed control system is stringently examined. Condition monitoring of aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) is essential for predictive maintenance of power electronic converters. The AEC is considered at the end of its life when its capacitance or equivalent series resistance (ESR) reaches corresponding critical values. In the literature, it is found that either of these parameters may reach its critical limit depending on the operating conditions and applications. However, most of the existing health monitoring techniques of the AEC in dc–dc converters are based on the estimation of ESR. To address the aforementioned issue, this paper proposes to estimate the low-frequency impedance of the AEC, which is dominated by its capacitance value, thereby allowing health monitoring based on the capacitance value. The technique is based on injection of a low-frequency current ripple into the AEC using duty ratio control of the dc–dc converter. The parameters of new and aged capacitors are experimentally obtained at various temperatures and are used to establish the failure criteria. Furthermore, the proposed method is applicable for both the continuous conduction mode and the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) of operation. For DCM operation, a sampling instant to recover a low-frequency waveform is suggested based on mathematical analysis. Detailed simulation studies are performed and results are included in this paper. Experimentation is carried out on a dc–dc boost converter integrating solar photovoltaic with the dc system. In order to reduce the cost and volume of small-medium power ac–dc light-emitting diode (LED) lighting systems, single-stage LED drivers are often used to drive LEDs with constant current. In this paper, a single-stage isolated high-power factor ac–dc LED driver is proposed and analyzed in detail, which is composed of a buck–boost power factor correction unit operating in discontinuous conduction mode and an isolated dc/dc unit with a voltage doubler rectifier, and the two units are integrated together by sharing the same power switch. Very high input power factor is achieved since the PFC unit operates with almost fixed duty ratio during half period of the utility line voltage. Since a voltage doubler rectifier is included in the isolated dc/dc unit, magnetic core size of the transformer and voltage stress of the secondary side diodes are reduced remarkably. First, the operating principle and performance of the LED driver are analyzed. Then, the main parameters are quantitatively calculated out in detail. Finally, a comparative analysis is presented and a 120 W experimental prototype with 1 A output current is built according to the calculated parameters and the experimental results are presented to verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis and parameter design. Insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules and dc-link capacitors are important parts in the majority of power electronic converters which contribute to cost, size, and failure rate on a considerable scale. This paper presents an online condition monitoring method for both IGBT modules and dc-link capacitors of power converters based on short-circuit current of an IGBT module, which is a good condition indicator according to the theory analysis. The failure prediction of dc-Link capacitor is realized by equivalent series resistance, which can be calculated by short-circuit current and a step voltage, and the bond wires fatigue can also be identified by the short-circuit current. The proposed method is capable for detecting small changes in the failure indicators of IGBT modules and electrolytic capacitors, and its effectiveness is validated by a confirmatory experiment. In this paper, a new structure for high step-up dc–dc converters is proposed. In the proposed structure, it is possible to extend the topology by increasing the number of active–passive inductor cells. High voltage gain with lower duty cycle, low-current and -voltage stresses on switches, small inductors, and small size of filter are the main advantages of the proposed structure. The proposed converter is analyzed in different operating modes. In order to design the components’ values of the proposed converter, the equations of output voltage ripple are calculated in each operating mode and a design procedure is proposed based on the aforementioned equations. This paper presents a new active capacitor voltage balancing control method for the flying capacitor multicell (FCM) converters which is fully implemented using logic-form equations. The proposed active capacitor voltage balancing control technique, measures output current and flying capacitor (FC) voltages to generate the switching states in order to produce the required output voltage level and to balance FCs’ voltages at their reference values. Output voltage of the FCM converter controlled with proposed active capacitor voltage balancing method can be modulated with any pulse width modulation (PWM) technique such as the phase-shifted-carrier PWM or level-shifted-carrier PWM. This paper proposes a novel active capacitor voltage balancing technique for stacked multicell (SM) converters. The proposed active capacitor voltage balancing control method detects the direction of the load current and measures the voltage of flying capacitors (FCs) to generate a proper switching state in order to form the required output voltage level and regulate the FC voltages at their desired reference levels. This paper proposes two nonisolated single-stage high power factor converters requiring low dc-link capacitance for power LEDs systems. Both converters result from the integration of the power factor correction and the LEDs driver stages, and require a relatively low dc-link capacitance value. A high power factor is demonstrated to be an inherent property of the proposed topologies and no input current control is necessary. The LEDs current is regulated by a symmetrical soft-switching half-bridge converter associated with a capacitive output filter. An accurate mathematical analysis valid for the two converters is detailed, yielding the elaboration of a step-by-step design procedure. In this paper, a method for suppressing the low-frequency portion of dc-link ripple inevitably present in power conversion systems with reduced capacitance is proposed. The discussed active capacitance reduction circuitry (consisting of a feedback-controlled shunt-connected bidirectional buck-boost converter, terminated by a small auxiliary capacitance) directly regulates the dc-link voltage, utilizing a dual-loop control structure with parallel-connected multiresonant-bank-enhanced voltage loop stabilizing controller to achieve nearly constant, low-frequency-ripple-free steady-state dc-link voltage. Consequently, the proposed active capacitance reduction system may be perceived as a virtual infinite capacitor from the dc link point of view. The suggested circuitry is successfully applied to a single-phase commercial power factor correction front end in a nearly plug-and-play fashion. In this paper, the near-state pulse width modulation (NSPWM), adapted to be used in dual-voltage source inverter (VSI) fed open-end load, is introduced primarily aiming to appreciably minimize the voltage total harmonic distortion (THD). Within the framework of the proposed method, the active time of pulses at the second inverter is relatively adjusted within switching interval (compared to the first VSI). The phase voltage harmonics are formulated for dual-inverter modulated by NSPWM; then, optimal adjustment is identified via a three-dimensional curve of phase voltage THD versus modulation index (MI) and phase angle displacement (PAD). Due to the limitation of MI in NSPWM, the desired output voltage is synthesized with modifying not only MI but also PAD between references of two VSIs. Furthermore, NSPWM inherently takes advantage of better efficiency compared to conventional space vector modulation due to switching only two phases within an interval (by clamping one phase to positive/negative dc-rail). The dual-VSI supplied by two isolated dc sources is assembled in the laboratory to experimentally evaluate the THD reduction feature of the proposed method; also, the simulation results obtained by means of a MATLAB/Simulink environment show close agreement with experimental data. This paper proposes unified non-inverting and inverting ac–ac converter (UNI-AC) using pulse width modulation (PWM) for the utility voltage compensation. It offers four effective switching states to regulate the output voltage in bipolar manner, facilitating versatile modes of operation with different number of switching states being modulated. Each mode of the proposed UNI-AC is able to compensate both the grid voltage sag and swell problems due to its bipolar voltage gain. The operational principle and comparison for all these modes are investigated in details. Also, the UNI-AC is reversible and compatible with full range of power factor. This paper proposes an extended state observer (ESO) based second-order sliding-mode (SOSM) control for three-phase two-level grid-connected power converters. The proposed control technique forces the input currents to track the desired values, which can indirectly regulate the output voltage while achieving a user-defined power factor. The presented approach has two control loops. A current control loop based on an SOSM and a dc-link voltage regulation loop which consists of an ESO plus SOSM. In this work, the load connected to the dc-link capacitor is considered as an external disturbance. An ESO is used to asymptotically reject this external disturbance. Therefore, its design is considered in the control law derivation to achieve a high performance. Theoretical analysis is given to show the closed-loop behavior of the proposed controller and experimental results are presented to validate the control algorithm under a real power converter prototype. This paper presents a new family of hybrid Z-source boost dc–dc converters intended for photovoltaic applications, where the high step-up dc–dc converters are demanded to boost the low-source voltages to a predefined grid voltage. Because the boost capabilities of the traditional Z-source networks are limited, the proposed converters are composed of combine traditional Z-source networks in different ways to enhance the boost abilities of the traditional Z-source networks. The new version of the proposed Z-source converters is termed as hybrid Z-source boost dc–dc converters to satisfy the traditional benefits of Z-source networks with stronger voltage boost abilities which can also be applied to dc–ac, ac–ac, and ac–dc power conversions. The performances of the proposed converters are compared with other Z-source networks behaviors.
