It is difficult for a single converter to handle the high voltages involved in dc–dc conversion with a high-voltage input bus. Input-series–output-parallel (ISOP) technology can be used to solve this problem. In this paper, an input voltage sharing control scheme based on peak current (IVSPC) control to guarantee power balance between the modules of the ISOP system is studied. Owing to the peak current control, the output voltage of the system has a good ability to suppress input bus perturbations, and it exhibits good dynamic characteristics even when the input voltage changes significantly with a high slope. The IVSPC control method has two kinds of loops: a common output voltage regulation (OVR) loop and individual input voltage sharing (IVS) loops. The OVR loop provides the same current reference component for all modules, whereas the IVS loops provide different components. The peak current reference signal for each module is the sum of the reference components from the OVR and IVS loops. For the effective operation of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), a control strategy plays a significant role. This paper presents an enhanced control strategy for DVR using dual role cascaded delay signal cancellation (CDSC)-based dual vector control (DVC) under unbalanced and distorted grid conditions. Based on the numerical analysis, it is found that the CDSC prefilter is a promising solution when grid voltage is distorted by symmetric, asymmetric harmonics, and unbalanced sag. Mainly, the CDSC prefilter extracts instantaneous symmetrical components of the grid voltage required for voltage sags detection and generation of fundamental component of reference voltage for the DVR. A CDSC-based DVC algorithm with inductor current and capacitor voltage feedback is implemented in a synchronous reference frame, which tracks the fundamental DVR reference voltages. An extractor based on the modified CDSC strategy is designed to extract harmonics from load voltage during distorted grid conditions. These extracted harmonic components (nonfundamental) are added in phase opposition with fundamental component and fed to pulse width modulation block to generate reference voltages. Experimental studies are conducted on scaled down (100 V, 0.5 kVA) laboratory prototype DVR to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm under unbalanced and distorted grid conditions. In this paper, a novel integrated interleaved dual-mode time-sharing inverter (IIDMI) is proposed for grid-tied transformerless photovoltaic (PV) applications. While the dual-mode time-sharing conversion technique ensures minimum losses, the IIDMI also retains the advantages of interleaved topologies, such as low total harmonic distortion of the ac current with reduced filtering requirements, increased power density, and reduced current and thermal stresses of power devices. The leakage current problem, which is a main concern with the transformerless PV inverters, is solved by increasing the frequency of the main side band of the common-mode voltage above the resonance frequency of the common-mode impedance, while avoiding high switching losses. The current control, especially at transitions between the buck and the boost modes of operation, is highly improved by utilizing a fast-response deadbeat control scheme. In this paper, a family of automatic interleaved Dickson switched-capacitor converters (AIDSCC) and its zero-voltage switching (ZVS) resonant configuration are proposed. Different from the traditional Dickson switched-capacitor converter, the AIDSCC has symmetrical configuration with the features of automatic interleaved input current, small output voltage ripple, and lower peak capacitor voltage stress. To improve the line regulation capability, one small resonant inductor is inserted and two bulky capacitor banks are replaced by two much smaller resonant capacitors, forming the resonant AIDSCC. The transistors are ZVS turned on and diodes are zero-current switching turned off by operating above the resonance. With frequency modulation within a reasonable range, the voltage-gain range of the resonant AIDSCC is expanded significantly, while sacrificing the maximum efficiency due to the higher conduction loss. This paper proposes a novel 11-level improved active-neutral-point-clamped (11L-IANPC) converter for ground power unit (GPU) application. This hybrid topology consists of the 5L-ANPC and the proposed low-voltage submodule. The proposed 11L-IANPC converter possesses only one flying capacitor (FC) and reduced number of high-frequency switches. Hence, voltage diversity and ratings, stored energy, and the number of costly and bulky FCs are significantly decreased. Moreover, operating the augmented submodule at the low voltage and power leads to doubling the number of output voltage levels, whereas the low extra cost and size are imposed on the proposed converter. In addition, suggested sensorless switching method leads to self-balancing of FC and significantly amends the output voltage frequency spectrum. These improvements cause significant reduction in control complexity of the proposed 11L-IANPC converter, remarkable decrease in size of the bulky and costly output LC filter, and improving the dynamic and steady-state performance of the proposed static GPU. This paper presents a novel single-phase multicell converter for ac–dc power conversion, which is formed by a series connection of several full-bridge converter stages through passive components. The proposed topology employs a simple control scheme based on the carrier-based sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation technique. Detailed design procedure of the passive filter components are analyzed and discussed. An efficient optimization method based on a differential evolution algorithm is utilized to optimize the filter parameters. Considering the filter structure, active damping is introduced in the control scheme to improve the stability of the overall system, which is later verified by experiments. The systematic design approach of the controller parameter is also highlighted, focusing a specific set of goals. Charging batteries of light electric vehicles require chargers with high efficiency and a high power factor. To meet this need, this paper presents a bridgeless single-power-conversion battery charger composed of an isolated step-up ac–dc converter with a series-resonance circuit. The bridgeless configuration reduces the conduction losses associated with the input diode rectifier, and the series-resonance circuit reduces the reverse-recovery losses of the output diodes by providing zero-current switching. In addition, direct and series-resonance current injections enable bidirectional core excitation by the transformer, thereby allowing high-power capability. The control algorithm derived from feedback linearization is also developed, which allows the proposed charger to correct the power factor and regulate the output power in a single-stage power conversion. This simple circuit structure leads to high efficiency and a high power factor. The theoretical concepts of the proposed charger are verified experimentally using a 1.7-kW prototype. This paper investigates dc-link capacitor optimization for three-phase photovoltaic-based microinverters. This concept minimizes the storage capacitance by allowing greater voltage ripple on the dc link. Therefore, the microinverter reliability can be significantly increased by replacing electrolytic capacitors with film capacitors. However, this intentionally increased voltage ripple can introduce harmonic distortion on the output current of the inverter stage if it is not mitigated by the dc-link voltage controller. For this purpose, a robust and accurate dc-link voltage control is proposed to filter this ripple while regulating the dc-link voltage without using any additional circuit components. The experimental results on a 400-W three-phase half-bridge microinverter prototype validate the theoretical analysis of the dc-link capacitor optimization and show that a significant reduction of the dc-link capacitor requirement can be achieved. The proposed high-accuracy dc-link voltage controller is also implemented on this prototype to demonstrate very low harmonic distortion of the inverter output current while tightly regulating the dc-link voltage even during transients. Usually, the parallel-compensated inductive power transfer (IPT) topology fed by a current-source inverter is controlled through variable switching frequency and fixed 50% duty cycle method. This enables the system to operate at resonance frequency, which drifts due to load and other parameter variations. Owing to this control constraint, the load requirements are fulfilled by adding extra dc–dc chopper at the output. This paper presents a new control technique for a parallel–series/series IPT network, fed from a full-bridge current-source inverter to meet the load demand directly by an inverter. Therefore, the extra chopper stage at the output side of the converter is eliminated. The control goals are achieved through a two-loop control method, where the inner input current loop controls the source current and the outer output current loop meets the load requirements. The detailed steady-state operation, converter design, small-signal modeling, and control are reported, and experimental results obtained from a 1.6-kW lab prototype are included to verify the mathematical analysis. Conventional power supply systems for xenon lamps have only limited applicability in sintering, because sintering needs to drive the lamp itself as well as enable instantaneous and strong discharge of voltage and current for generating intense light. This implies that, for sintering applications, a method should be developed that would enable instantaneous and strong discharge of energy. In this paper, we propose a new xenon lamp sintering system with an additional capacitor charger and bank. The proposed system features three power supplies. Two power supplies, called the trigger and the simmer, ionize gaseous xenon using a 23-kV trigger pulse output and sustain the ionized xenon gas using a 2.5-kW simmer power supply. The used trigger is also specially designed to conduct high current through its transformer, and it makes the proposed system an outstanding high voltage blocking capability. Another 36-kW power supply charges a 130-mF capacitor bank with a high-efficiency resonant converter. In addition, some components such as the simmer blocking diode and the trigger output capacitor are introduced, because combining different power supplies causes operational problems. These components are analyzed with some circuits that show its features, and finally, the validity of the suggested system was confirmed in two steps. First, the simmer power supply and the capacitor charger were tested for the rated operating performance by using a resistive load condition. As a result, the rated operation of the simmer power supply was confirmed under the 2.5-kW output condition, and the efficiency of the capacitor charger was found to be greater than 96% at the rated 36-kW rated load condition. In addition, a pulse discharge current of 900 A was also observed with the equivalent resistor load through a pulsed discharge experiment of the capacitor bank, which was charged at 1500 V. The trigger power supply, whose equivalent resistive load was difficult to realize, was experimented directly using the real xenon lamp to check the stable trigger operation of the xenon lamp at its 23-kV output pulse voltage. After the verification using the resistive load condition, the real operation and performance of the combined xenon lamp power supply system that includes three kinds of power supplies were finally tested and verified by using the actual xenon lamp as a total system. The conventional design of voltage-source power converters is based on a two-level half-bridge configuration and the selection of power devices designed to meet the full application specifications (voltage, current, etc.). This leads to the need to design and optimize a large number of different devices and their ancillary circuitry and prevents taking advantage from scale economies. This paper proposes a paradigm shift in the design of power converters through the use of a novel configurable device consisting on a matrix arrangement of highly optimized switching cells at a single voltage class. Each switching cell consists of a controlled switch with antiparallel diode together with a self-powered gate driver. By properly interconnecting the switching cells, the switching-cell array (SCA) can be configured as a multilevel active-clamped leg with a different number of levels. Thus, the SCA presents adjustable voltage and current ratings, according to the selected configuration. For maximum compactness, the SCA can be conceived to be only configurable by the device manufacturer upon the customer needs. For minimum cost, it can also be conceived to be configurable by the customer, leading to field-configurable SCAs. This paper proposes some topologies for developing electronic ballasts, supplying high-intensity discharge lamps fed by a pulsewidth-modulation ac–ac converter, implemented with bidirectional switches. The lamp operates directly from the ac mains; thus, operation with low frequency so as to prevent the occurrence of destructive acoustic resonance is provided. The features of the proposed solution are high efficiency, high power factor, low cost, and the absence of electrolytic capacitors. In this paper, an integrated double buck–boost (IDBB) converter is proposed as a high-power-factor offline power supply for power-LED lamps. The IDBB converter features just one controlled switch and two inductors and is able to supply a solid-state lamp from the mains, providing high power factor and good efficiency. In this paper, the IDBB converter is analyzed, and a design methodology is proposed. It is demonstrated that, with a careful design of the converter, the filter capacitances can be made small enough so that film capacitors may be used. In this way, the converter mean time between failures can be made as high as that of the solid-state lamp. A design example for a 70-W converter supplied from a 230 V/50 Hz mains for street lighting applications is shown. Finally, experimental results from a laboratory prototype are also presented. This paper presents a general comparison procedure for medium voltage - high power multilevel converter topologies and semiconductors, which is mainly based on analyzing the performance limits of the converters output characteristics such as the output voltage, current, active power, efficiency, etc. Afterwards, the general procedure is applied to compare some of the most relevant converter topologies oriented to a 6.6 kV drive application supplying quadratic torque loads and using 4.5 kV IGBT modules. The paper concludes evaluating the comparison factors of the different converter topologies and selected semiconductors obtained by the proposed procedure. First, the limitations of the conventional interleaved boost converters in high-step-up and high-output-voltage applications are addressed in this paper. Then, a general derivation law of the nonisolated converters from their isolated counterparts is proposed and studied to give a universal solution for high-performance topology deduction. By employing the direct energy transfer concept, a family of nonisolated high-step-up interleaved boost converters is originated to make the turns ratio of a built-in transformer as another design freedom for the voltage gain extension. The derived converters have the advantages of large voltage conversion ratio, low power switch voltage stress, small input current ripple, and zero-voltage-switching soft-switching performance. The steady-state operation of the derived converter is analyzed, and the circuit performance is summarized to explore its advantages in the high-step-up, high-output-voltage, and large-current conversion systems. Finally, a 1-kW prototype with 40-V input and 380-V output voltages is implemented and tested to show the effectiveness of the derived converters. This paper presents a load adaptive control approach to optimally control the amount of reactive current required to guarantee zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of the converter switches. The proposed dc/dc converter is used as a battery charger for an electric vehicle (EV). Since this application demands a wide range of load variations, the converter should be able to sustain ZVS from full-load to no-load condition. The converter employs an asymmetric auxiliary circuit to provide the reactive current for the full-bridge semiconductor switches, which guarantees ZVS at turn-on times. The proposed control scheme is able to determine the optimum value of the reactive current injected by the auxiliary circuit in order to minimize extra conduction losses in the power MOSFETs, as well as the losses in the auxiliary circuit. In the proposed approach, the peak value of the reactive current is controlled by controlling the switching frequency to make sure that there is enough current to charge and discharge the snubber capacitors during the deadtime. In addition, some practical issues of this application (battery charger for an EV) are discussed in this paper. Experimental results for a 2-kW dc/dc converter are presented. The matrix converter can be used in a wide range of applications. Nevertheless, it does not yet represent a sufficiently mature option for industrialization. In order to resolve this problem, this paper examines the hardware of the matrix converter and identifies all the circuits that should be included in this. It also quantifies the operating conditions and provides practical guidelines for the step-by-step design of a matrix converter. These considerations are validated with experimental results. This paper proposes a novel family of cascade three-level (TL) ac–ac direct converters based on ac switch cells, which transfer unsteady high ac voltage with distortion into regulated sinusoidal voltage with low total harmonic distortion (THD). The topological family includes buck TL–boost, buck–boost TL, and buck TL–boost TL modes. In order to achieve a reliable TL ac–ac conversion, a double transient voltage feedback control strategy of the output voltage and the voltage across the flying capacitor is introduced in this paper. A 500-VA 220-V \pm10% 50-Hz ac/220-V 50-Hz ac prototype is presented with the experimental results to prove that the converters have four improved advantages simultaneously, including lower voltage across power switches, bidirectional power flow, low THD of output voltage, and higher input power factor. This paper investigates the buck–boost dc–dc converter and the energy transmission techniques in this kind of converter. In this paper, the critical inductance between the continuous conduction and discontinuous conduction modes are determined. In addition, the critical inductance equation between the complete inductor supply mode and incomplete inductor supply mode are calculated. The energy transmission technique and the output voltage ripple (OVR) of a buck–boost converter are analyzed in a specific range of the load and input voltage. The relations between the maximum OVR (MOVR) and the converter component parameters are deduced, and the minimum inductance value is calculated to ensure the MOVR minimization. This paper proposes a new space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SV-PWM) strategy for a three-level neutral point clamped inverter. The presented SV-PWM strategy makes it possible to control the neutral point voltage by optimum choice of switch sequence for any position and length of output voltage vector. The proposed solution takes into consideration the unbalance of the dc-link voltages. It also analyzes the influence of vector sequences on the predicted unbalance of the dc-link voltage. The solution allows selecting optimum vectors and their on-time durations in order to reduce quickly the dc-link voltage unbalance. The calculation of the space vector area proposed in this paper takes into consideration voltage unbalance and its influence on the length and position of vectors. The proposed approach assures properly generating the voltage output vectors, even in the case of the existing large voltage unbalance in the dc-link. Multilevel power electronic converters have gained popularity in high-power applications due to their lower switch voltage stress and modularity. Cascaded H-bridge converters are a promising breed of multilevel converters which generally require several separate dc voltage sources. By utilizing the redundant switching states, it is possible to replace the separate dc voltage sources with capacitors and keep only the one with the highest voltage level. Redundancy in the charge and discharge modes of the capacitors is assumed to be adequate for their voltage regulation. However, the effects of the output current of the converter as well as the time duration of the redundant switching states have been neglected. In this paper, the impacts of the connected load to the cascaded H-bridge converter as well as the switching angles on the voltage regulation of the capacitors are studied. This paper proves that voltage regulation is only attainable in a much limited operating conditions that it was originally reported. In addition, based on the analysis of the converter, a simplified formula is found which can be used to find those modulation indices that regulate the voltage of the capacitor. This formula can be used in harmonic minimization problems while capacitor voltage regulation is ensured. Simulation and laboratory results are provided to confirm the analysis. This paper proposes two sets of topologies for single-phase to three-phase four-wire ac–dc–ac power conversion. All proposed configurations are characterized by reduction in the number of switches. The first set includes five configurations using ten power switches, while the second one includes six configurations using eight power switches. Such configurations are conceived for supplying three-phase four-wire loads and to guarantee bidirectional power flow between grid and load. Besides collecting different configurations, this paper proposes a synchronization technique, which can be applied for configurations with shared leg. A new bidirectional dc–dc converter composed of two class-E resonant converters is presented in this paper. Bidirectional power flow is controlled by transistor control pulse frequency changes, with a constant break between the succeeding pulses as in quasi-resonant converters. The boost or buck mode converter operation depends on the mutual relation between the control pulses of the transistor pairs which are located diagonally in the converter bridge. The advantages of the system involve are high operation frequency (200 and 450 kHz) and zero value of the transistor switching losses. Multilevel converters have become an interesting alternative for medium- and high-voltage drives over the last decade. Among the existing alternatives, multicell structures offer advantages due to their modularity and scalability. This paper presents experimental results of a recently introduced multilevel topology. The converter is based on the mixture of the two most popular multicell topologies, namely, flying capacitor and cascaded multicell inverter. The new cell provides a high number of output levels, a low number of components, high modularity, and low losses. The results presented in this paper confirm that this new medium-voltage inverter topology is able to reach high-quality output voltages, allowing further advances in modulation techniques and other issues. This paper presents investigations of dc-link voltages balance with the use of a passive RLC circuit in a single-phase diode-clamped inverter composed of two three-level legs. Application of the balancing circuit in the diode-clamped inverter needs proper PWM generation but the modulation method is the same for both in the balanced and unbalanced state. This method of dc-link voltages balance does not need any measurements or additional control, and this ensures fast response and low energy losses. This paper also presents mathematical analysis of the PWM modulation method and the inverter operation, and an analytical description of the natural balancing process with contribution of the load current and the balancing circuit current. This paper proposes a CLL resonant dc–dc converter as an option for offline applications. This topology can achieve zero-voltage switching from zero load to a full load and zero-current switching for output rectifiers and makes the implementation of a secondary rectifier easy. This paper also presents a novel methodology for designing CLL resonant converters based on efficiency and holdup time requirements. An optimal transformer structure is proposed, which uses a current-type synchronous rectifier (SR) drive scheme. Two issues are still a great challenge in the design and application of advanced controlled electric drives, namely, recovery of the braking energy and ride-through capability of the drive system. Apart from the ordinary solutions, such as back-to-back and matrix converters, an approach based on the ordinary diode front-end-drive converter equipped with an energy-storage element is used in some applications, such as traction and lift drives. This approach has come into focus recently with the rapid development of electrochemical double layer capacitors, so-called ultracapacitors. To achieve system flexibility and better efficiency, the ultracapacitor is connected to the drive via a dc–dc converter. The converter is controlled in such a way as to fulfill the control objectives: the control of the dc-bus voltage, the ultracapacitor state of charge, and peak-power filtering. In this paper, we have discussed the modeling and control aspects of the regenerative controlled electric drive using the ultracapacitor as energy-storage and emergency power-supply device. In this paper, a direct ac–dc power electronic converter topology is proposed for efficient and optimum energy harvesting from low-voltage microgenerators. The converter utilizes the bidirectional current-conduction capability of MOSFETs to avoid the use of a front-end bridge rectifier. It is operated in discontinuous conduction mode and offers a resistive load to the microgenerator. Detailed analysis and modeling of the converter is presented. In such low-power applications, the power consumption of gate drive and control circuits should be minimal. In this paper, they are specifically designed to consume very low power. A suitable startup circuit and auxiliary dc supply circuit is proposed for the implementation of the converter. There are technical challenges when the grid-connected current source converter operates under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The negative sequence component of the unbalanced grid voltage would result in the low-frequency ripple at dc side, as well as current harmonics at ac side. It has an adverse impact on the system operation. In order to solve the problem, the system mathematical model is established in this paper. The limitation of the conventional control strategy is clearly clarified. And then, the improved control strategy is discussed from the viewpoint of constant instantaneous active power. In order to further enhance the system performance, a new control strategy is proposed. Instead of the complicated instantaneous power theory, the proposed solution is a direct control strategy. Both the low-frequency dc-side ripple and ac-side current harmonics can be significantly reduced with a simple control structure, due to the direct control concept. A new class of impedance networks is proposed in this paper. The proposed coupled-inductors-based impedance cells, called the series and the tapped switched-coupled-inductors, are employed within the (quasi) switched boost networks. The achieved impedance networks based on the proposed cells offer very high conversion gains with less-than-unity turn ratios (n < 1), which simplifies the realization of the magnetic element and at the same time reduces the number and size of passive components. The high boosting capability is achieved with small shoot-through durations that bring some additional advantages, such as low ratings of switching devices. The circuit analysis and operation concepts as well as a design procedure for the components of the proposed impedance networks are presented. Resonant power conversion provides high-efficiency and high-power-density power converters that have boosted the performance of many applications, including induction heating (IH). One of the main challenges of such converters is the fine tuning and operation monitoring of the resonant tank, especially when it is highly variable. This paper proposes an field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based load identification technique based on measuring the resonant capacitor voltage and calculating its spectral components. This approach proposes an accurate and cost-effective implementation, since the sensing, conditioning, and analog-to-digital conversion systems can be significantly simplified to a single low-harmonic-content signal. Many autonomous sensor nodes use small photovoltaic (PV) panels oriented toward the direction that provides the highest energy yield in the worst case scenario. Since all those panels operate at similar irradiance and temperature conditions, they can be properly biased at the same bias point by using a single maximum power point tracker (MPPT). But in applications that involve several PV panels with dissimilar orientations, using an MPPT tailored to each panel would increase system cost. A better design option is to implement the MPPT with a single multiple-input converter shared through time-division multiplexing (TDM) control. However, existing TDM controls are usually based on pulsewidth modulation converters wherein the high switching frequency of transistors results in excessive power losses for low-power systems. In this paper, a new nonisolated high step-up dc–dc converter is proposed. Active–passive inductor cells (APICs) are used to extend the topology. The ability to achieve high gains is the main merit of the proposed topology. The proposed converter operates based on parallel charging and series discharging of the inductors. The converter also achieves high step-up voltage gain with appropriate duty cycle and low voltage and current stress on the power switches and diodes. The proposed converter is analyzed in operation modes. The main parameters of the converter such as voltage gain, voltage stress of semiconductor devices are calculated to compare with other structures. Considering the output voltage ripple and filter size, the proposed converter is designed. Moreover, the losses and efficiency of the converter are calculated. Due to current sensor errors, tolerance of power switching devices, and asymmetry of PWM gating driving pulses, grid-connected inverters without isolation transformer usually have certain amount of dc components injected to the ac grid. Many efforts, such as using a blocking capacitor, a current dc component feedback control, and a voltage dc component feedback control have been introduced to try to suppress the dc injection to the grid. This paper proposes a novel control strategy of suppressing dc current injection to the grid for a three-phase inverter by accurately sensing the dc component of line voltages of three-phase inverter and adding a dc component control loop. A dc suppression control scheme is presented, and the suppression performance of the proposed dc rejection method is evaluated and compared with the traditional method. This paper proposes a novel nonisolated single-input dual-output three-level dc–dc converter (SIDO-TLC) appropriate for medium- and high-voltage applications. The SIDO-TLC is an integration of the three-level buck and boost converters, whose output voltages are regulated simultaneously. Reducing voltage stress across semiconductor devices, improving efficiency, and reducing inductors size are among the main merits of the new topology. Moreover, due to the considerably reduced volume of the step-down filter capacitor, a small film capacitor can be used instead, whose advantages are lower equivalent series resistance and a longer lifespan. A closed-loop control system has been designed based on a small-signal model derivation in order to regulate the output voltages along with the capacitors’ voltage balancing. In order to verify the theoretical and simulation results, a 300-W prototype was built and experimented. The results prove the aforementioned advantages of the SIDO-TLC, and the high effectiveness of the balancing control strategy. In this paper, a three-level quasi-switched boost T-type inverter (3L qSBT2I) is proposed. A new pulse-width modulated (PWM) control method is presented to reduce the inductor current ripple of the qSBT2 I. In the introduced PWM technique, the shoot-through duty cycle is maintained constant to keep the modulation index as high as possible. Then, the only control parameters of the qSBT2I are the duty cycles of the two additional switches. By controlling the duty cycles of the two additional switches, the voltage gain of the proposed qSBT2 I can be improved to a value larger than that of the conventional 3L impedance source inverters. The steady-state analysis, operating principles, and comparisons with the impedance source-based 3L inverters are presented. A 1-kW prototype is constructed to verify the operating principle of the 3L qSBT2I. This paper presents a fast fuzzy logic control algorithm for a Takagi–Sugeno–Kang fuzzy controller, which is applied to integrated \textLED drivers with the purpose of getting a good dynamic response and the reduction in the low-frequency (120 Hz) ripple. The algorithm uses the high-speed mathematical engine of a digital signal controller \text(DSC) that is capable to achieve fast multiplications during a common one-cycle instruction. Therefore, the execution time of the controller is improved with the use of a \textDSC. A scaling procedure is included in the program in order to use and to improve the accuracy of the multiplications and divisions in the \textDSC mathematical engine. A low-range \textDSC was used to program the proposed controller; therefore, the cost is affordable for \textLED driver applications. This paper presents the analysis of a rectifier load used for an electric vehicle (EV) wireless charging system, as well as its applications on compensation network design and system load estimation. First, a rectifier load model is established to get its equivalent input impedance, which contains both resistance and inductance components, and can be independently calculated through the parameters of the rectifier circuit. Then, a compensation network design method is proposed, based on the rectifier load analysis. Furthermore, a secondary side load estimation method and a primary side load estimation method are put forward, which adopt only measured voltages and consider the influence of the rectifier load. Finally, an EV wireless charging prototype is developed, and experimental results prove that the rectifier equivalent load can be correctly calculated on conditions of different system load resistances, rectifier input inductances, dc voltages, and mutual-inductances. The experiments also show that rectifier load equivalent inductance will impact system performances, and the proposed methods have good accuracy and robustness in the cases of system parameter variations. The increasing use of grid-connected inverter systems is resulting in a desire for parallel-connected inverters that offer greater power capacity while maintaining the high control bandwidth achieved by individual inverters. This paper demonstrates that, in addition to the traditional stability and bandwidth limitations of digitally controlled inverters, further stability and bandwidth limitations occur when LCL inverters with a common set point are connected in parallel to a grid. This paper provides detailed discrete-time derivations for parallel grid-connected inverters and uncovers stability and bandwidth limitations that only occur in grid-connected applications and are not apparent if the system is studied in continuous time. This paper demonstrates that, in a typical application, the voltage bandwidth of an LCL parallel inverter array is 25% lower than a single module or LC parallel configuration. All possible steady states of a Z-source inverter are identified and analyzed with the objective of deriving design guidelines for the symmetrical impedance network. This paper shows that, in addition to the desired three dynamic states, an operating cycle can contain another three static states that do not contribute to the power conversion process. These three static states can be avoided by selecting suitably large capacitors and inductors. By using the equations derived in the steady-state analysis, this paper presents guidelines to design the impedance network accurately for the case where the inverter is operated only in active and shoot-through states. The proposed design method can also be used to predict the critical values of capacitance and inductance below which static states appear during the operating cycle. Computer simulations and laboratory experiments are used to verify the design method and to demonstrate the appearance of static states when the capacitors and inductors are sized lower than their critical values. This paper presents investigations of voltage-sharing stabilization with the use of passive RLC circuit in switch-mode flying capacitor dc-dc converters. Practical and simulation results and also a mathematical analysis of the balancing process in boost and buck-boost converters are presented. Analyzed converters use additional capacitors (flying capacitors), charged to proper value, for decreasing the voltage on switches and increasing the inductor-current frequency. Such advantages are achieved under proper voltage sharing on the flying capacitors. The voltages are stabilized in a natural way by the load current and with the use of external RLC circuit to force the current that flows through the converters' capacitors under unbalance state. This paper focuses on the analysis of the balancing phenomenon with the use of the external RLC circuit in these topologies. The balancing booster improves the balancing process in these converters, making it independent of the load. It can also reduce oscillations that arise in the converters in transient states. Batteries, ultracapacitors (UCs), and fuel cells are widely being proposed for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEV5) as an electric power source or an energy storage unit. In general, the design of an intelligent control strategy for coordinated power distribution is a critical issue for UC-supported PHEV power systems. Implementation of several control methods has been presented in the past, with the goal of improving battery life and overall vehicle efficiency. It is clear that the control objectives vary with respect to vehicle velocity, power demand, and state of charge of both the batteries and UCs. Hence, an optimal control strategy design is the most critical aspect of an all-electric/plug-in hybrid electric vehicle operational characteristic. Although much effort has been made to improve the life of PHEV energy storage systems (ESSs), including research on energy storage device chemistries, this paper, on the contrary, highlights the fact that the fundamental problem lies within the design of power-electronics-based energy-management converters and the development of smarter control algorithms. This paper initially discusses battery and UC characteristics and then goes on to provide a detailed comparison of various proposed control strategies and proposes the use of precise power electronic converter topologies. Finally, this paper summarizes the benefits of the various techniques and suggests the most viable solutions for on-board power management, more specific to PHEVs with multiple/hybrid ESSs. Abstract-In this paper, the influence of one-sample delay for sampling and computation in digital control on the bandwidth of the inner current loop of a 400-Hz ground power unit (GPU) is analyzed first. The results show that it is difficult and even impossible for high-power 400-Hz GPUs to maintain low total harmonic distortion content in the output voltage with the conventional proportional-integral-based double-loop control. To improve the performance, resonant controllers with parallel structure which are widely used in active power filters are applied to the single-loop control of the 400-Hz GPU. The parameter design criterion for the parallel resonant controllers is discussed in the discrete time domain. Meanwhile, adoption of-proportional gain in the single-loop control is investigated. The results show that it can improve the performance little and may cause instability problems. Comparisons between different control methods for the 400-Hz GPU are also made, and the single-loop control method in this paper seems to be the most suitable one in terms of simplicity and performance. Experiments on a 16-b fixed-point DSP-controlled 90-kVA 400-Hz GPU prototype show satisfactory results of the single-loop method feeding linear/nonlinear and balanced/unbalanced loads. In order to improve the efficiency of energy conversion for a photovoltaic (PV) system, a soft-switching boost converter using a simple auxiliary resonant circuit, which is composed of an auxiliary switch, a diode, a resonant inductor, and a resonant capacitor, is adopted in this paper. The conventional boost converter decreases the efficiency because of hard switching, which generates losses when the switches are turned on/off. During this interval, all switches in the adopted circuit perform zero-current switching by the resonant inductor at turn-on, and zero-voltage switching by the resonant capacitor at turn-off. This switching pattern can reduce the switching losses, voltage and current stress of the switching device. Moreover, it is very easy to control. In this paper, we have analyzed the operational principles of the adopted soft-switching boost converter, and it is designed for PV generation system. Address driver circuits are responsible for a significant portion of power consumption by a plasma display panel television. In the latest effort for the reduction of the power consumption by address driver circuits, the power-efficient operation mode is selected by controlling the voltage of the capacitor that affects the LG resonance. This paper presents an analysis of power consumption by the address circuits and observes that the operation mode change in a previous work is too slow to achieve an efficient power reduction when the number of data switchings of each scan line changes abruptly in the input image. This paper proposes a new power reduction method with a fast selection of the operation mode based on the analysis of the power consumption by each address operation mode. The fast mode selection enables rapid change of the address operation mode and consequently leads to a reduction of power consumption by 22.2% when compared with the previous method. In double-stage grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) in. verters, the dynamic interactions among the dc/dc and dc/ac stages and the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller may reduce the system performances. In this paper, the detrimental effects, particularly in terms of system efficiency and MPPT performances, of the oscillations of the PV array voltage, taking place at the second harmonic of the grid frequency are evidenced. The use of a proper compensation network acting on the error signal between a reference signal provided by the MPPT controller and a signal that is proportional to the PV array voltage is proposed. The guidelines for the proper joint design of the compensation network (which is able to cancel out the PV voltage oscillations) and of the main MPPT parameters are provided in this paper. This paper presents the various configurations of a multilevel modular capacitor-clamped converter (MMCCC), and it reveals many useful and new formations of the original MMCCC for transferring power in either an isolated or nonisolated manner. The various features of the original MMCCC circuit are best suited for a multibus system in future plug-in hybrid or fuel-cell-powered vehicles' drive train. The original MMCCC is capable of bidirectional power transfer using multilevel modular structure with capacitor-clamped topology. It has a nonisolated structure, and it offers very high efficiency even at partial loads. This circuit was modified to integrate single or multiple high-frequency transformers by using the intermediate voltage nodes of the converter. On the other hand, a special formation of the MMCCC can exhibit dc outputs offering limited isolation without using any isolation transformer. This modified version can produce a high conversion ratio from a limited number of components and has several useful applications in providing power to multiple low-voltage loads in a hybrid or electric automobile. This paper will investigate the origin of generating ac outputs from the MMCCC and shows how the transformer-free version can be modified to create limited isolation from the circuit. In addition, this paper will compare various modified forms of the MMCCC topology with existing dc-dc converter circuits from compactness and component utilization perspectives. This paper presents an investigation of a multilevel multicell ac/ac converter. The converter employs flying capacitors, whose voltages should remain in a constant relation to the input ac voltage. An inadequate relation between the voltages across the flying capacitors (the imbalance state) results in an increase of voltages across the switches above their rated values. An RLC series circuit (a balancing circuit) with a properly selected resonance frequency was connected in parallel to the load in order to eliminate the imbalance. The balancing process with the use of a passive RLC depends on the configuration and parameters of the balancing circuit, the parameters of the converter, as well as on the operating conditions. This paper focuses on the impact of these parameters on the operation of the converter. This paper presents a hybrid modulation technique for the three-level neutral-point-clamped converter. A modulation strategy, based on two modulation signals per phase, was presented previously. This strategy completely removes the low-frequency voltage oscillations that appear at the neutral point (NP) in some operation conditions. However, it also has a major drawback: it significantly increases the switching losses of the converter. The proposal in this paper combines such a modulation strategy with sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM). The main characteristic of this hybrid modulation is the reduction in switching losses at the cost of some low-frequency voltage oscillations at the NP. The amplitude of these oscillations can be controlled by varying the combination of the two strategies. The performance of the hybrid modulation is analyzed and compared with the original strategies. Power losses and oscillation amplitudes on the dc-link capacitors are evaluated. Experimental results show how the hybrid modulation performs by balancing the dc-link capacitors.
