This paper presents a 5-level inverter topology for open-end induction motor drives by using a single dc source. The open stator windings of the drive are supplied with a 3-level flying capacitor inverter from one end and capacitor-fed 2-level inverter from another end. The voltage ratio of the dc link to the capacitor in 2-level inverter is maintained at 4:1 ratio to generate five-level voltage output. The capacitor in 2-level inverter is balanced by the switching redundant vector combinations from both the inverters while the floating capacitors in the 3-level inverter are balanced by using redundant switching states. The proposed topology gives 5-level operation with less number of floating capacitors and power semiconductor switches compared to other existing topologies. Also, the balancing of the capacitors is independent of load power factor and modulation index. Further, the generalization of the proposed dual inverter scheme for any n-level inverter is also included in this paper. Motors and inverters are increasingly being used in vehicles. As more vehicle components are being adopted, requirement for safety and installation space are increasing. Growing attention is being paid to the use of six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and their parallel control by two inverters, because of their reduced size and enhanced safety. This paper proposes a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control algorithm for a six-phase PMSM. In low-voltage vehicle components such as electric power steering, the current is usually acquired with resistors placed under the low-side switching devices. In the proposed control algorithm, the neutral voltage of the two inverters is shifted to either a lower or higher voltage within a certain range to allow for the signal conditioning time delay after the switching device turns on or off, and the time taken for the phase current to rise or settle. The paper proposes a novel PWM control algorithm that ensures that the on-time of the low-side switching devices satisfies the restriction on current sensing with resistors and reduces the current in the capacitor at the same time. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. This paper proposes a new multilevel inverter (MLI) topology that utilizes trinary sequence for the dc sources. It gives maximum output voltage level with minimum dc source and switch count when compared to other sequences, such as symmetric, natural, binary, and quasi-linear. This is due to the fact that the trinary sequence generates of all additive and subtractive combinations of input dc levels in the output voltage waveform. The concept is implemented on a 9-level asymmetric MLI using only four active devices. Multicarrier unipolar pulsewidth modulation technique is adopted to create the switching pulses. Theoretical calculation of total harmonic distortion in both voltage and current waveforms has been performed using asymptotic time domain formula. This paper presents a novel fault-tolerant method for active–neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter using a modified carrier-based pulsewidth modulation. At a fault event, the ANPC inverter is divided into subinverters, and the modulating signal is modified to two modulating signals. The modified modulating signals are used to control the subinverters and allow continuous operation of the three-level ANPC inverter during faulty conditions even up to four open-switch faults per phase. This technique provides the fault-tolerant capability of the ANPC inverter without the need to add any additional phase legs or complex control strategies. Furthermore, the proposed technique ensures the voltage balancing of the dc-link capacitors. The performance of the proposed fault-tolerant technique is verified through simulation studies in MATLAB/Simulink under different faulty conditions. This paper deals with the analysis of the input dc-link voltage ripple in multilevel inverter based on H-bridge and level doubling network (LDN). The LDN is basically a half-bridge fed by a floating capacitor, with voltage self-balancing capability, recalling the concept of a flying capacitor configuration. The amplitude of the LDN voltage ripple is analytically determined considering both the low-order and the switching harmonic components. In particular, peak-to-peak distributions of voltage ripples over the fundamental period are analytically determined, making possible the design of dc-link capacitor relying only on the dc-voltage ripple requirements. The case study makes reference to negligible switching ripple in the output current. It well represents either grid connection or passive load having almost sinusoidal currents. In this paper, a generalized switching modification method is proposed to reduce the root-mean-square (rms) current flowing into a dc-link capacitor in a dc–dc–ac structure consisting of a boost converter and a three-phase inverter. To analyze the current flowing into the capacitor, we analyze the currents at the respective converter and inverter sides. Based on this analysis, we derive an analytical method to find the modification time between the converter and inverter pulsewidth modulation (PWM) carriers through a Fourier series and approximation to facilitate real-time implementation. Real-time implementation of the modification time calculated by the derived method is described. To verify the validity of the proposed method, experimental results are presented based on a 1-kVA dc–dc–ac prototype. The proposed method has a better capacitor rms current reduction performance than the conventional method in various inverter power factors and PWM strategies. Multilevel inverters are now-a-days being applied in electric vehicles (EV). Considering the dynamic operating conditions of an EV propelled by an induction motor, this paper proposes a flexible discontinuous modulation strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter that can shift modulation pattern seamlessly from sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) to discontinuous PWM (DPWM). The modulation scheme is generalized at each degree of discontinuity to ensure minimum switching losses for variable load power factors. Additionally, a hybrid voltage balancing strategy, which comprises two sets of compensating offset signals with complementary features, has been introduced to mitigate voltage deviation problem at neutral point of the inverter. The unique feature of the proposed hybrid balancing approach is that it generates uniform compensating neutral current regardless of the level of discontinuity. This results in identical and predictable voltage balancing dynamics for the entire modulation transition covering SPWM and DPWM. It has been shown that the proposed hybrid balancing strategy does not lose its unbalance compensation strength even during transition from one modulation pattern to another. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for wide variations in operating conditions is studied through extensive simulation, and validated in experimentation using a prototype NPC inverter with induction motor loads. In this paper, a three-level quasi-switched boost T-type inverter (3L qSBT2I) is proposed. A new pulse-width modulated (PWM) control method is presented to reduce the inductor current ripple of the qSBT2 I. In the introduced PWM technique, the shoot-through duty cycle is maintained constant to keep the modulation index as high as possible. Then, the only control parameters of the qSBT2I are the duty cycles of the two additional switches. By controlling the duty cycles of the two additional switches, the voltage gain of the proposed qSBT2 I can be improved to a value larger than that of the conventional 3L impedance source inverters. The steady-state analysis, operating principles, and comparisons with the impedance source-based 3L inverters are presented. A 1-kW prototype is constructed to verify the operating principle of the 3L qSBT2I. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. A three-level NPC inverter is completely mature and very well-established topology in high-power applications. However, the three-level NPC inverter has an inheritance problem of the neutral-point voltage unbalancing due to the split dc-link capacitors. This structure can cause large neutral-point voltage ripple. Furthermore, output currents of the three-level NPC inverter are distorted by the neutral-point voltage ripple. Therefore, the neutral-point voltage must be controlled. In this paper, a new DPWM method using two different offsets for the neutral-point ripple reduction is proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed DPWM method is verified by using the simulation and the experimental results. In this paper, a single-stage solution for solar photovoltaic (PV) pumping system using a dual-inverter fed open-end winding induction motor drive is presented. The three-level dual-inverter requires a low PV bus voltage compared with its conventional three-level counterpart. This could avoid large string of PV modules and helps in reducing the voltage rating of the capacitors and semiconductor devices used in the system. This may further help in reduction of cost of the system. The proposed single-stage system is operated using an integrated control algorithm, which includes the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), the $V/f$ control, and the sample-averaged zero-sequence elimination (SAZE) pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique. While the MPPT algorithm ensures the extraction of maximum power from the PV source, the $V/f$ control improves the motor pump performance. Furthermore, the zero-sequence current is avoided by the SAZE PWM algorithm. Thus, the integrated control algorithm improves the overall performance of the system. Furthermore, this paper also presents the details of system design and analysis of its dynamic behavior during transient environmental conditions. Multilevel inverters with dodecagonal (12-sided polygon) voltage space vector structure have advantages, such as complete elimination of fifth and seventh harmonics, reduction in electromagnetic interference, reduction in device voltage ratings, reduction of switching frequency, extension of linear modulation range, etc., making it a viable option for high-power medium-voltage drives. This paper proposes two power circuit topologies capable of generating multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure with symmetric triangles (for the first time) with minimum number of dc-link power supplies and floating capacitor H-bridges. The first power topology is composed of two hybrid cascaded five-level inverters connected to either side of an open-end winding induction machine. Each inverter consists of a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter, which is cascaded with an isolated H-bridge making it a five-level inverter. The second topology is for a normal induction motor. Both of these circuit topologies have inherent capacitor balancing for floating H-bridges for all modulation indexes, including transient operations. The proposed topologies do not require any precharging circuitry for startup. A simple pulsewidth modulation timing calculation method for space vector modulation is also presented in this paper. Due to the symmetric arrangement of congruent triangles within the voltage space vector structure, the timing computation requires only the sampled reference values and does not require any offline computation, lookup tables, or angle computation. This paper presents a comparison of two modulation methods for the seven-level switched-capacitor (SC) inverter using series/parallel conversion (SCISPC). The SCISPC is a multilevel inverter which has the less number of switching devices than the conventional multilevel inverters. The level-shifted pulsewidth modulation (PWM) (LS-PWM) was applied to the seven-level SCISPC in the previous research. In this paper, the level- and phase-shifted PWM (LPS-PWM) and the LS-PWM are applied to the seven-level SCISPC, and LPS-PWM is compared with LS-PWM for the seven-level SCISPC. The LPS-PWM has both the characteristics of the phase-shifted PWM (PS-PWM) and the LS-PWM. The voltage reduction during the discharging term of the SCs is reduced by means of the shorter discharging period compared to LS-PWM. The voltage ripple of the capacitors is also reduced, which leads to higher power conversion efficiency. Compared with multilevel space vector modulation, level-shifted multicarrier sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) for nested neutral point-clamped (NNPC) inverters requires much less calculations and implementation efforts, but the existing conventional SPWM cannot suppress the severe flying-capacitor (FC) voltage ripples under low output-frequency conditions. In order to solve this problem, a multicarrier-based PWM strategy with complete voltage balance control (VBC) capacity is proposed in this paper. For NNPC inverters operating under low output-frequency conditions, two preprocessing steps, the zero-sequence injection and the modulation-signal rearrangement, are proposed before the comparisons between level-shifted carriers and modulating signals. These preprocessing steps make the average currents flowing through FCs zero, which is beneficial to greatly reduce the FC voltage ripples under low output-frequency conditions. Together with additional VBC, the proposed modulation can assure the FC voltages balanced under the entire output-frequency conditions. Principles and implementation processes of proposed modulation techniques and VBC methodsare elaborated in detail and compared with conventional modulation methods. The Z-source inverter (ZSI) employs an LC impedance network between the main inverter bridge and the power source. The unique feature of the ZSI is that it can operate either in buck or boost mode with a wide range of obtainable output voltages from a given input voltage. This topology also exhibits better electromagnetic-interference noise immunity when compared to a traditional voltage-source inverter (VSI). However, the LC impedance network of ZSI significantly increases the size and cost of the power converter and can make it unsuitable for low-power applications. This paper proposes a novel topology called switched boost inverter (SBI) which exhibits similar advantages of ZSI with lower number of passive components and more active components compared to ZSI. The steady-state and small-signal analyses of SBI, along with its pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control strategies, have been discussed in this paper. This paper also presents a comparison of SBI and ZSI with the same input and output parameters. The theoretical analysis given in this paper has been validated using a laboratory prototype of SBI, and the experimental results are presented for verification. The experimental harmonic spectrum of the inverter's output voltage with the proposed PWM technique is also plotted and compared with that of a traditional VSI. In this paper, an immune algorithm (IA) is developed for optimization of the harmonic performance of a three-phase inverter under the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation (SVPWM) control strategy. The presented algorithm employs the immune approach as the search method for finding the best optimal control vectors and action time of the three-phase inverter. As a result, the optimal control vectors and action time are calculated to minimize the objective function of the weighted total harmonic distortion of the output voltage waveforms. In addition, an experimental platform based on DSP and field-programmable gate array is built. This paper provides a detailed performance analysis of the method with comparison to the conventional SVPWM. A new pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is developed and presented in this paper. The proposed PWM scheme not only takes advantage of the special properties available in NPC inverters, but also reduces the switching loss of the inverter along with an inherent neutral point (NP) voltage control. Based on a circuit-level decoupling concept, the NPC inverter can be decoupled into two three-level Buck converters in every defined operating section, and thereby the controller design can be simplified. The salient features of the proposed scheme, as compared with the existing carrier-based DPWM strategies, are: 1) its reduced computational processing time, 2) its capability to balance the dc-link voltage without any additional control, and 3) its reduced complexity, e.g., only one carrier wave needed for pulse width modulating. Same as a space-vector modulation, the maximum modulation index, 1.1547, can be attainable by the proposed scheme. Moreover, compared to conventional continuous sinusoidal PWM, using this technique proposed here, the switching losses of the devices can be reduced by one third. In order to explain the operation of this topology properly, the decoupling principle including the driving signal synthesis and the NP potential variation are analyzed in detail in this paper. This paper discusses the implementation of level-shifted and phase-shifted carrier-based modulation methods, in conjunction with a multiphase open-end winding drive topology. The considered drive is supplied using two five-phase two-level voltage source inverters (VSIs), with input provided from two isolated supplies of equal dc voltages. The topology is known to yield the same space-vector pattern as a corresponding three-level inverter in single-sided supply mode. It is shown in this paper that, with the application of a simple logic, the same phase voltage waveforms result as those obtainable with the appropriate carrier-based modulation scheme applied to the three-level VSI in single-sided supply mode. While the outcomes of the modulation techniques are the same, the open-end winding topology offers certain advantages, such as modularity and absence of capacitor voltage balancing requirements. This paper proposes a unique carrier-based pulse width modulation strategy for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter that works satisfactorily and with uniform convergence time over the full power factor (PF) range of the load variation. It has excellent control over capacitor voltages and mitigates low-frequency oscillations in the neutral point for the full PF range. First, an investigation is made to see how the load currents get modulated to generate compensating neutral current causing charging and discharging of dc-link capacitors. It is observed that when an additional modulating voltage signal that is in phase with the corresponding phase current is added in each phase, a neutral current is produced in the right direction which can be used to compensate for any prior unbalance in capacitor voltages. It is demonstrated that the performance of this scheme is insensitive to the load PF variation (full range from zero to unity). It performs satisfactorily throughout the entire linear modulation range and eliminates any undesirable low-frequency harmonic component in the compensating neutral current. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through simulation and experimental results by varying load PF as well as modulation index with both passive and motor loads. In this paper, the near-state pulse width modulation (NSPWM), adapted to be used in dual-voltage source inverter (VSI) fed open-end load, is introduced primarily aiming to appreciably minimize the voltage total harmonic distortion (THD). Within the framework of the proposed method, the active time of pulses at the second inverter is relatively adjusted within switching interval (compared to the first VSI). The phase voltage harmonics are formulated for dual-inverter modulated by NSPWM; then, optimal adjustment is identified via a three-dimensional curve of phase voltage THD versus modulation index (MI) and phase angle displacement (PAD). Due to the limitation of MI in NSPWM, the desired output voltage is synthesized with modifying not only MI but also PAD between references of two VSIs. Furthermore, NSPWM inherently takes advantage of better efficiency compared to conventional space vector modulation due to switching only two phases within an interval (by clamping one phase to positive/negative dc-rail). The dual-VSI supplied by two isolated dc sources is assembled in the laboratory to experimentally evaluate the THD reduction feature of the proposed method; also, the simulation results obtained by means of a MATLAB/Simulink environment show close agreement with experimental data. This paper presents a nine-level inverter topology for an open-end induction motor drive requiring only eight switches per phase, using two three-level inverters with two isolated dc links in a 3:1 ratio. A space-vector-based formulation is used to determine pole voltages such that both inverters supply power to the load over the full modulation range, eliminating the possibility of dc bus overcharging. Proper selection of switching states ensures that all floating capacitor voltages are kept tightly balanced. A digital state machine is used to select sequences of switching states in order to eliminate deadtime-induced pole voltage transients, further improving the output-voltage quality. Cascaded converters are adopted in many power systems to manage sources and loads at different voltage levels simultaneously. DC bus capacitor is one of the key components in these converters due to its energy storage and fast response capabilities. However, the ripple current through the capacitor will influence its lifetime and the overall efficiency of the converter. Previous studies showed that the capacitor current of ac systems is optimized when the duty cycles are synchronized under in phase or antiphase condition. In this paper, the bus capacitor ripple current of cascaded two-stage converters for dc systems with different combinations of duty cycles is analyzed. It is found that the optimum capacitor current ripple varies depending on the values of individual duty cycles and the phase-shift angle between them. By properly adjusting the phase shift, the capacitor RMS current value can be reduced without affecting the converter normal operation or the need for extra sensing circuits, hence improving the energy conversion efficiency and prolonging the capacitor lifetime with relatively simple implementation. To illustrate, a case study of a two-stage dc/dc converter is carried out. A laboratory prototype converter confirmed a maximum efficiency improvement of 2.8% if the phase shift is adjusted properly when compared to the same converter with the worst case phase-shift angle. Multilevel active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter is popularly known for its higher medium voltage drives up to 6.9 kV. However, common-mode voltages (CMV) are generated when using the well-established carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) modulation technique. As a result, CMV will become the major cause of the premature bearing failures and the conducted electromagnetic interferences. In this paper, a reduced CMV strategy is proposed for the ANPC which employs an alternatively new hybrid carrier-based modulation named as interleaved sawtooth carrier phase-disposition PWM (ISC-PD-PWM). By doing so, enhanced harmonic profile is achieved as compared to the typically used classical phase-shifted carrier PWM (PSC-PWM). Therefore, a comparative evaluation of the seven-level (7L) ANPC performance using the proposed reduced CMV approach is made between the novel hybrid ISC-PD-PWM and the conventional PSC-PWM in terms of harmonic analysis. This paper introduces a combination of two proposed efficiency improvement techniques for a microinverter with current mode control zero-voltage switching output stages. The first technique is dynamic dead-time optimization wherein pulse width modulation dead times are dynamically adjusted as a function of load current. The second method is advanced phase skipping control which maximizes inverter efficiency by controlling power on individual phases depending on the available input power from the photovoltaic source. Neither of the techniques requires any additional circuit components and both can be easily implemented in digital controller firmware. The two techniques were designed and implemented in a 400-W three-phase microinverter prototype. The experimental results validate the theoretical analysis of these techniques and demonstrate that a significant efficiency improvement can be achieved by combining the two proposed control techniques. This paper proposes a new three-phase modular multilevel inverter (MMLI). The proposed inverter consists of repeated modular primary cells that are connected in series configuration. Therefore, the proposed topology can be extended to get more output voltage levels by adding additional cells without increasing voltage stresses across power switches. Both sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) and staircase modulation are successfully applied to the proposed inverter. The proposed inverter features many advantages such as reduced number of semiconductor power switches, driver circuits, dc-voltage sources, simplified control algorithm, and reduced voltage stresses across the switches independent of output voltage level. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed inverter is studied under both open-loop and closed-loop operations for highly inductive load. Beside the obtained simulation results, a laboratory prototype has been carried out and tested to verify the control techniques and performances of the topology. This paper proposes a new space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SV-PWM) strategy for a three-level neutral point clamped inverter. The presented SV-PWM strategy makes it possible to control the neutral point voltage by optimum choice of switch sequence for any position and length of output voltage vector. The proposed solution takes into consideration the unbalance of the dc-link voltages. It also analyzes the influence of vector sequences on the predicted unbalance of the dc-link voltage. The solution allows selecting optimum vectors and their on-time durations in order to reduce quickly the dc-link voltage unbalance. The calculation of the space vector area proposed in this paper takes into consideration voltage unbalance and its influence on the length and position of vectors. The proposed approach assures properly generating the voltage output vectors, even in the case of the existing large voltage unbalance in the dc-link. In this paper, a new inverter topology is proposed for generating a multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure for open-end winding induction motor (IM) using a single dc source. Dodecagonal voltage space vector structure eliminates fifth- and seventh-order harmonic voltages from phase voltage output and hence eliminates the fifth- and seventh-order harmonic currents through the motor leading to removal of the dominant sixth-order torque ripple generation in the motor over the entire modulation range. Multilevel space vector structure generates output voltage with better THD and low dv/dt. In the proposed topology, two three-level inverters drive an open-end winding IM, one inverter from each side. DC-link of primary inverter is from a dc source which delivers the entire active power, whereas the secondary inverter dc-link is maintained by a capacitor, which is self balanced during the inverter operation. The PWM scheme implemented ensures low switching frequency for primary inverter. Secondary inverter operates at a small dc-link voltage. Hence, switching losses are small for both primary and secondary inverters. A four-level open-end winding induction motor (OEWIM) drive is known to suffer from two perennial problems. One is the problem of zero-sequence currentin the motor phases, which is caused by the existence of zero-sequence voltage in them. The other is the overcharging of the dc-link capacitor of theinverter operated with lower dc-link voltage by its counterpart operated with a higher dc-link voltage. This paper investigates the applicability of aspecial variant of space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) scheme for a recently proposed power circuit configuration, in which arectifier–inverter combination is nested within the conventional two-level inverter configuration to achieve four-level inversion. In this paper, a multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure with nineteen concentric dodecagons is proposed for the first time. This space vector structure is achieved by cascading two sets of asymmetric three-level inverters with isolated H-bridges on either side of an open-end winding induction motor. The dodecagonal structure is made possible by proper selection of dc link voltages and switching states of the inverters. The proposed scheme retains all the advantages of multilevel topologies as well as the advantages of dodecagonal voltage space vector structure. In addition to that, a generic and simple method for calculation of pulsewidth modulation timings using only sampled reference values ( $v_\alpha$ and $v_\beta$) is proposed. This enables the scheme to be used for any closed-loop application such as vector control. In addition, a new method of switching technique is proposed, which ensures minimum switching while eliminating the fifth- and seventh-order harmonics and suppressing the eleventh and thirteenth harmonics, eliminating the need for bulky filters. The motor phase voltage is a 24-stepped waveform for the entire modulation range thereby reducing the number of switchings of the individual inverter modules. Experimental results for steady-state operation, transient operation, including start-up have been presented and the results of fast Fourier transform analysis is also presented for validating the proposed concept. This paper proposes a technique to suppress low-order harmonics for an open-end winding induction motor drive for a full modulation range. One side of the machine is connected to a main inverter with a dc power supply, whereas the other inverter is connected to a capacitor from the other side. Harmonic suppression (with complete elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonics) is achieved by realizing dodecagonal space vectors using a combined pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control for the two inverters. The floating capacitor voltage is inherently controlled during the PWM operation. The proposed PWM technique is shown to be valid for the entire modulation range, including overmodulation and six-step mode of operation of the main inverter. Due to the higher attenuation of switching frequency current harmonics, the $LCL$ filter has been widely used in grid-connected inverters. To deal with the resonance of the $LCL$ filter, the capacitor current is usually fed back to damp the resonance actively. However, the computation and pulsewidth modulation (PWM) delays in the digital control system have a significant influence on the active damping method, resulting in poor system robustness. Meanwhile, these delays also reduce the control bandwidth greatly and thus impose a severe limitation on the low-frequency gains. In this paper, a real-time computation method with dual sampling mode is proposed to remove the computation delay from the inner active damping loop and the outer grid-current control loop simultaneously; thus, the system robustness and the control performance can be greatly improved. Moreover, the time duration between the sampling instant and the switching transition of the inverter bridge is extended by the proposed method, which effectively prevents the switching noise distorting the sampled signals. Therefore, the noise immunity of the inverter is also improved greatly. This paper presents an effective circuit configuration of a multilevel inverter that can increase the number of output voltage levels with a reduced number of circuit components. The proposed seven-level pulsewidth-modulation inverter consists of a single dc voltage source with a series of capacitors, diodes, active switches for synthesizing output voltage levels, and an H-bridge cell. After theoretical analysis, we carry out computer-aided simulations and experiments to verify the validity of the proposed approach. This paper proposes the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy of Z-source inverters (ZSIs) with minimum inductor current ripple. In existing PWM strategy with single-phase shoot-through, the shoot-through time interval is divided into six equal parts, therefore the three phase legs bear the equal shoot-through time interval. In this manner, the allotment and arrangement of the shoot-through state is easy to realize, but the inductor current ripple is not optimized. This causes to use relatively large inductors. In the proposed PWM strategy, the shoot-through time intervals of three phase legs are calculated and rearranged according to the active state and zero state time intervals to achieve the minimum current ripple across the Z-source inductor, while maintaining the same total shoot-through time interval. The principle of the proposed PWM strategy is analyzed in detail, and the comparison of current ripple under the traditional and proposed PWM strategy is given. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology has been widely used in passive RFID localization application due to its flexible deployment and low cost. However, current passive RFID localization systems cannot achieve both highly accurate and precise moving object localization task owing to tag collisions and variation of the behavior of tags. Most researchers increase the density of tag distribution to improve localization accuracy and then consider using either anti-collision process embedded in the hardware of the RFID reader or advanced localization algorithms to enhance localization precision. However, advanced anti-collision processes for RFID devices are challenged by the physical constraint characteristics of radio frequency; and improved localization algorithm cannot fundamentally reduce the impacts of tag collision on localization precision. This research work attempts to improve localization precision of a passive RFID localization system by using sparsely distributed RFID tags. This paper first defines a measure for accuracy and precision in a passive RFID localization system with regard to RFID tag distribution. An exponential-based function is then derived from experimental measurements, which reflects the relationship between RFID tag distribution and localization precision. This function shows that localization precision is mainly determined by tag density of RFID tag distribution. Based on the experimental findings, a sparse RFID tag distribution approach is proposed. The results show that in comparison with the conventional RFID tag distribution, passive RFID localization system with sparse RFID tag distribution can deliver a higher localization precision for the required accuracy. Cascaded H-bridge multilevel power electronic converters generally require several dc sources. An alternative option is to replace all the separate dc sources feeding the H-bridge cells with capacitors, leaving only one H-bridge cell with a real dc voltage source. This will yield a cost-effective converter. However, the required capacitor voltage balancing is challenging. In this paper, using the phase-shift modulation approach, a new control method for cascaded H-bridge multilevel converters fed with only one independent dc source is presented. This paper presents a three-phase cascaded multilevel inverter that uses five-level transistor-clamped H-bridge power cells. Multicarrier phase-shifted pulse-width modulation method is used to achieve balanced power distribution among the power cells. A new method to balance the midpoint capacitor voltage in each cell is developed and tested. The analysis of the output voltage harmonics and the total power losses covering the conduction and the switching power losses are carried out and compared with the cascaded neutral-point-clamped and the conventional cascaded H-bridge inverters. For verifications, the proposed inverter is experimentally tested on an induction motor. From the results, the proposed inverter provides higher output quality with relatively lower power loss as compared to the other conventional inverters with the same output quality. The five-level active neutral-point (NP)-clamped (ANPC) converter is a newly emerging topology which can overcome the drawbacks of traditional NP-clamped and flying-capacitor multilevel converters. This paper presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the NP potential balancing issue and demonstrates that the NP potential can be naturally balanced under ideal and steady conditions. An NP potential balancing method based on zero-sequence voltage injection is presented. By calculating the average NP currents of all key zero-sequence voltages, the most appropriate zero-sequence voltage is selected to generate the demanded NP current, which can also limit the switching frequency of the series-connected insulated-gate bipolar transistors to the fundamental frequency. A neutral-point-clamped three-level inverter with small dc-link capacitors is presented in this paper. The inverter requires zero average neutral-point current for stable neutral-point voltage. The small dc-link capacitors may not maintain capacitor voltage balance, even with zero neutral-point current. This may happen due to nonlinearities present in the circuit. This requires a fast control of the neutral-point voltage. A simple carrier-based modulation strategy which allows modeling of the neutral-point voltage dynamics as a continuous function of power drawn from the inverter is proposed. This continuous model shows that the neutral-point current is proportional to the power drawn from the inverter, and it enables the use of a well-established classical control theory for the neutral-point voltage controller design. A simple proportional integral controller is designed for the neutral-point voltage control on the basis of the continuous model. The design method for optimum performance is discussed. The implementation of the proposed modulation strategy and the controller is very simple. The controller is implemented in a 7.5-kW induction machine-based drive with only 14 \mu \F dc-link capacitors. Also, the experimental results show that fast and stable performance of the neutral-point voltage controller are achieved and thus verify the validity of the proposed control approach. Multilevel inverters have been widely accepted for high-power high-voltage applications. Their performance is highly superior to that of conventional two-level inverters due to reduced harmonic distortion, lower electromagnetic interference, and higher dc link voltages. However, it has some disadvantages such as increased number of components, complex pulsewidth modulation control method, and voltage-balancing problem. In this paper, a new topology with a reversing-voltage component is proposed to improve the multilevel performance by compensating the disadvantages mentioned. This topology requires fewer components compared to existing inverters (particularly in higher levels) and requires fewer carrier signals and gate drives. Therefore, the overall cost and complexity are greatly reduced particularly for higher output voltage levels. In this paper, two space-vector-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) (SVPWM) strategies named equal- and proportional-duty SVPWMs are described, which are used to synthesize a four-level waveform from an open-end winding configuration of an induction motor. Two isolated dc-link voltages, which are in the ratio of 2 : 1, are employed to achieve this objective. Both of these PWM strategies achieve the avoidance of overcharging of the dc-link capacitor of an inverter operating with lower dc-link voltage by its counterpart with higher dc-link voltage. Implementation of these PWM strategies requires only the instantaneous three-phase reference voltages, eliminating the need of sector identification or lookup tables. The numbers of samples per cycle for individual inverters are selected in such a way that the quarter-wave, half-wave, and three-phase symmetries are achieved for the dual-inverter drive despite unequal dc-link voltages for the constituent inverters. It is also shown that one of the two PWM techniques, called the proportional-duty SVPWM, results in a better spectral performance and lower switching power loss in the overall dual-inverter system compared to the equal-duty SVPWM. With regard to a five-level inverter comprising flying-capacitor asymmetric H-bridge, the impact on the capacitor voltage under conventional modulation approach is analyzed. Since it is sensitive to the fundamental period and the load current, it may introduce undesired low-order harmonics into the output voltage and may even break down the power switches due to the considerable fluctuation of the flying-capacitor voltage. Thus, this paper proposes a novel pulsewidth-modulation scheme with the positive and negative cross carriers, which controls the flying-capacitor voltage by utilizing the redundant switching states of the output voltages. Three modes of precharging the flying capacitor without extra equipments are presented. Moreover, the capacitance of the flying capacitor and the switching frequency of the power switches can be chosen according to the allowable fluctuation of the flying-capacitor voltage and the load current. In order to remove the overlapping of the level layers, the optimization of the line-to-line voltage waveform is proposed to synthesize the reference vector with the “nearest three-vector” approach. Unipolar sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) full-bridge inverter brings high-frequency common-mode voltage, which restricts its application in transformerless photovoltaic grid-connected inverters. In order to solve this problem, an optimized full-bridge structure with two additional switches and a capacitor divider is proposed in this paper, which guarantees that a freewheeling path is clamped to half input voltage in the freewheeling period. Sequentially, the high-frequency common-mode voltage has been avoided in the unipolar SPWM full-bridge inverter, and the output current flows through only three switches in the power processing period. In addition, a clamping branch makes the voltage stress of the added switches be equal to half input voltage. The operation and clamping modes are analyzed, and the total losses of power device of several existing topologies and proposed topology are fairly calculated.
