In this paper, a single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) dc–dc converter is proposed. The significant feature of the proposed converter is feeding a constant power load in low-voltage side (LVS) port, where even feeding a variable load at LVS does not have any cross regulation to high-voltage side port with the desired approximation. Magnificently, both merits are obtained in open-loop manner, which is an outstanding characteristic in comparison with that of the existed converters. In this paper, soft commutation and soft switching of switches and diodes are investigated along with the aforementioned main novelty. Moreover, detailed theoretical analyses of the proposed SIDO dc–dc converter in continuous conduction mode are presented besides the comparisons with some other structures. The extra-LC auxiliary-resonant-snubber-based converter (ELCARSC), as a soft-switching converter, has the advantages of low switching loss, low electromagnetic interference noise, and low-output distortion caused by the dead-time effect. However, the dead-time effect is still the main problem in a high-precision application. Besides, the traditional control and compensation methods rely on the accuracy of the circuit parameters, especially the junction capacitance, thus resulting in compensation error. Therefore, this paper proposed a novel high-precision control method through modulating the initial resonant current to eliminate the dead-time effect of ELCARSC. The method does not need complicated online calculation and reduces the dependence on the accuracy of the circuit parameters, especially the influence of the junction capacitances of the switches. In this paper, the dead-time effect of the ELCARSC is analyzed. The output voltage error with the conventional variable-timing control method is analyzed. Subsequently, the proposed modulated initial resonant current control is introduced. Finally, a prototype was developed that verified the effectiveness of the control method. This paper presents research results of voltage gain number control methods of a power electronic resonant zero-current switching dc–dc switched-capacitor (SC) voltage multiplier (SCVM) in a topology with fault tolerance capability (FSCVM). The converters operated under the basic switching patterns are constant-voltage-gain dc–dc series-parallel resonant SC converters. However, this paper presents a method for the output voltage regulation by a special switching strategy. A variable voltage gain is made possible by selecting the number of active switching cells, using an appropriate control method. This creates a set of voltage ratio ranges. In addition, the proposed topology and method of control enable a fault-tolerant operation of the FSCVM under various failures of the device. The paper presents an analysis of the concept, simulation results and an experimental verification in a three-cell FSCVM dc–dc resonant boost converter operating at a 200-watt charge. Issues regarding the selection of components related to the problem of inrush currents that can occur during the voltage ratio increase are also analyzed in this paper, and the design for low inrush currents is demonstrated. This paper presents a uniform control strategy for the bidirectional ac/dc interlinking converter (BIC) in hierarchical controlled hybrid microgrid. The uniform control strategy unifies different control structures for multifunctional BIC in terms of power management, ac and dc voltage support. With the unified control structure, various triggering mechanisms for BIC mode-switch are not compulsory in response to the relevant scenario changes in the power network. Therefore, the negative consequences, such as unsmooth transition and system collapse due to the inaccurate or slower mode switch, can be avoided. Moreover, the uniform control strategy is also applicable for the hierarchical controlled hybrid microgrid, whose control architecture is typically comprised of the centralized and decentralized levels. This enables the communication fault ride-through capability and the impact from the communication failures can thus be mitigated. To sum up the above two features, the proposed control strategy is able to provide a smooth operation for the BIC without control mode switch in the event of unintentional scenario changes in power or communication network. This paper presents three unidirectional step-up ac–dc converter topologies with voltage multiplication on their outputs. The first topology is the hybrid boost rectifier and the other two are novel bridgeless structures, all based on the integration of boost rectifier and the ladder switched-capacitor (SC) cell. The new hybrid structures provide high voltage gain with low voltage stress across the switches, high-power factor, and output voltage regulation. This paper presents the principle of operation, steady-state and dynamic analysis, design methodology, and experimental verification. A different approach is also presented for the design methodology of the SC cell and for the analysis of its influence on the dynamic model. Three 1000-W prototypes with a 220-V input voltage, 800-V output voltage, and 100-kHz switching frequency were designed to corroborate the theoretical study. The best efficiency was 97.1$\%$ in the proposed bridgeless versions and the voltage stress across the switches stands around 400 V. In this paper, a new soft-switching bridgeless single-phase power factor correction converter is introduced and analyzed. Employing an auxiliary flyback circuit, existing dead angle in the input current is eliminated while softswitching is achieved. The flyback converter processes only small amount of output power. Therefore, conduction losses of its bridge diode and semiconductor devices are low. Also, the auxiliary flyback converter provides soft-switching condition for buck switches. All semiconductors are turned on and off under soft-switching condition. In addition to reduction of switching losses, diode's reverse-recovery problems are eliminated due to soft-switching condition. The proposed approach takes advantage of operating under discontinuous conduction mode to shape the input current into sinusoidal form inherently. Experimental results are reported for a 120-W prototype at 110 Vrms input and 48-V output. The results demonstrate efficiency of 93% at nominal load condition. This paper presents an approach for dealing with the control of five-level, diode-clamped rectifiers. The control of such converters is challenging, as voltage balancing among capacitors is not a trivial task. Some of the existing approaches that cope with this problem use specific modifications of one of the traditional modulation techniques, such as using redundant vectors in space vector modulation (SVM). The main feature of the proposed technique is that part of the modulation is considered in the system equations and, in this way, the voltage balance can be solved designing a specific controller for this problem. As a result, several levels are used within a switching period. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed approach hardly affects the control of active and reactive powers and total dc-link voltage in such a way that the well-known direct power control can be applied. As a consequence, the resultant modulation stage is simpler than other techniques based on, e.g., SVM. Thanks to the favorable advantage of low cost, integrated three-port dc–dc converters with reduced switches have attracted extensive attention. In order to provide more new topologies, this paper aims to propose a programmable topology derivation method, which effectively simplifies the cumbersome process of the conventional combination method. Instead of the manual connection and examination, the proposed alternative can quickly and rigorously derive multiple viable integrated three-port dc–dc topologies from a great number of possible connections with the aid of computer program. Besides, generalized analysis is also accomplished, with which performance characteristics of all derived converters are simultaneously obtained and then a comprehensive comparison can be easily conducted to select a preferred one for the practical application. This paper presents a three-phase open-end winding induction motor drive. The drive consists of a three-phase induction machine with open stator phase windings and dual-bridge inverter supplied from a single dc voltage source. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, a floating capacitor bank is used for the second of the dual bridges. The capacitor voltage is regulated using redundant switching states at half of the main dc-link voltage. This particular voltage ratio (2:1) is used to create a multilevel output voltage waveform with three levels. A modified modulation scheme is used to improve the waveform quality of this dual inverter. This paper also compares the losses in the dual-inverter system in contrast with a single-sided three-level neutral point clamped converter. Ensuring electrification of remote locations continues to be a major challenge for power engineers. To deal with the effect of intermittent nature of wind, this paper presents the design and implementation of a composite sliding mode controller (CSMC) for a battery energy storage (BES) supported solar photovoltaic (PV)–wind hybrid system in a remote location. This control technique comprises of a soft-switching sliding-mode observer (SS-SMO) and a nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller (NTSMC). The SS-SMO is used to observe the disturbances, whereas the NTSMC is used as a speed controller. The chattering problem caused by the conventional sliding mode controller is alleviated by replacing the conventional signum switching function with the smooth hyperbolic tangent function in disturbance observer loop. The fast and finite time convergence NTSMC based speed controller along with the SS-SMO based disturbance rejection unit, serves the benefits of CSMC. This technique exhibits robustness against model uncertainties and external disturbances. Moreover, the complexity of the system is reduced by replacing the mechanical speed and position sensors with parameter estimation. A double-stage configuration using a dc/dc boost converter is adopted for a PV system. A comparative analysis is presented between the proposed and conventional techniques. A prototype of the hybrid system is developed in the laboratory with permanent magnet synchronous generator. The CSMC-based controller with disturbance rejection ability is implemented to harvest peak wind power. Switched-capacitor converter (SCC) featuring high efficiency and power density has attracted industry interest, but weak output voltage regulation hinders its application. This paper presents an optimized phase-shift (PS) control strategy for a bridge modular SCC, utilized in energy storage system, to obtain continuous conversion ratio and high-efficiency operation. By employing a small inductor as current buffer, the control strategy could be implemented to regulate output voltage conveniently with excellent steady and dynamic performance in step-down mode as well as step-up mode. Most importantly, the high-efficiency operation mechanism never reported before is revealed here. Correspondingly, the active circumfluence could be controlled through optimizing the range of PS time, which will avoid the loss in circuit self. Meanwhile, the soft-switching conditions of all the switches are comprehensively analyzed and soft-switching operations are achieved according to the logic timing control of the power devices, improving efficiency further. In this paper, a novel buck–boost converter with low electric stress on components and negative output voltage is proposed. The operational principle, steady-state analysis, and small-signal modeling of the proposed buck–boost converter in continuous conduction mode are presented. Comparisons among another five buck–boost converters and the proposed buck–boost converter are presented. It is found that the proposed converter's voltage gain is smaller than the other converters’ in step-down mode. Also, based upon the comparisons among the same kind and same number of components, the voltage and current stresses on the power switch of the proposed buck–boost converter are less than or equal to those of the comparative converters, and the voltage stress on the charge pump capacitor and the switching device power rating of the proposed buck–boost converter are always lower than those of other comparative converters. The efficiency of the proposed buck–boost converter is highest among those converters having the same number of elements. These advantages make component selection for the proposed converter much easier, and it can be used directly in applications needing a negative voltage source. In the hybrid ac–dc microgrid, the ac and dc subgrids are connected by bidirectional power converters (BPCs) that play an important role in the load power sharing and power interaction between the ac and dc subgrids. The coordination control and circulating current suppression for the parallel BPC system are very challenging. In this paper, a decentralized coordination control method is proposed for parallel three-phase BPCs, which can suppress the circulating currents, realize proper power interaction, and achieve overall load power sharing in both the grid-connected mode and the islanded mode. Microinverters operating into the single-phase grid from new energy source with low-voltage output face the challenges of efficiency bottleneck and twice-line-frequency variation. This paper proposed a multilevel inverter based on bridge modular switched-capacitor (BMSC) circuits with its superiority in conversion efficiency and power density. The topology is composed of dc–dc and dc–ac stages with independent control for each stage, aiming to improve system stability and simplify the control method. The BMSC dc–dc stage, which can be expanded to synthesize more levels, not only features multilevel voltage gain but also partially replaces the original bulk input capacitor and functions as an active energy buffer to enhance power-decoupling ability between dc and ac sides. In dc–ac stage, the control strategy of optimized unipolar frequency doubling sine-wave pulse width modulation is proposed to improve the quality of output waveform. Meanwhile, the multilevel voltage phase has been optimized to further reduce the power loss. Finally, a prototype has been built and tested. One of the main technical challenges associated with the modular multilevel converter (MMC) for any application is the optimal control of its states. Optimal control of the MMC requires determination of the following: 1) an accurate MMC model, 2) the MMC states to be controlled and their corresponding reference trajectories, and 3) an appropriate controller type/form and its parameters. The aforementioned tasks lead to the formulation of a multistate control optimization problem, which is tackled in this paper. This paper enhances the accuracy of the existing MMC state-space model by including the following: 1) a piecewise affine insulated-gate bipolar transistor/diode model and 2) the impact of dead time. This paper also proposes a simulation-based gradient-descent optimization algorithm (cosimulation) to optimize the controller gains, given the controller type/form and the reference state trajectory. The theoretical proofs of the gradients required in the optimization algorithm are also provided. The aforementioned optimization algorithm is applied to a variable-frequency MMC-based drive system. Experimental results on a scaled-down prototype and simulation results on a real-world application are provided to validate the accuracy of the proposed MMC model and to show the effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm. This paper describes a systematic procedure using power flow graphs for generating all possible double-input single-output (DISO) dc/dc converters. To maximize the generality of applications, the input ports can possibly be connected with voltage source(s) or current source(s), and the output port can be connected with a voltage load or current load. The control methods are described in this paper. A DISO converter with two voltage sources and one voltage load is taken as an example to analyze a few key properties of practical relevance, including input voltage range, efficiency, power distribution, and switching stress. A popular application of DISO converters involves the use of a battery as storage element, and for this specific case, possible choices for the converters, the control method, and the attainable efficiency are discussed. The control loop stability in boost converters operating in continuous conduction mode has been restricted due to its nonminimum phase nature: the presence of a positive zero (right-half plane zero) in the control to output voltage transfer function. This paper proposes a method to mitigate the effect of the zero on the control loop by shifting the position of the zero to the left-half plane and hence leading to increased stability for the control loop of the boost converter. This paper presents a solution for the voltage balance problem of the series-connected devices that can be applied to multilevel converters in which the series-connected devices need to block twice their switched voltage. The solution is based on two ideas, the control of the switching commands to achieve proper switching losses balance and the use of additional circuitry to achieve proper voltage balance during their blocking state. The proposed strategy is experimentally validated into a 5-level multipoint clamped full-scale converter. Several applications such as power supplies for electric precipitators, ozone generation, partial discharge, etc., require ac superimposed dc (ACsDC) voltage supply. Most of such applications use intransigent systems for producing ACsDC voltages. In this paper, three different kinds of flexible power electronic converters are proposed for producing ACsDC voltages. These converters have two power conversion stages: input and output. In the input stage, two isolated dc voltages are obtained by using an isolated three-port dc–dc converter or two isolated two-port dc–dc converters. In the output stage, one of the input-stage dc voltages is used to generate an ac voltage and the obtained ac voltage is added to the remaining input-stage dc voltage to obtain an ACsDC voltage. Based on the converters used in the input stage, the proposed ACsDC converters are named as a dual active bridge (DAB) converter-based ACsDC converter (DAB-ACsDC), triple port active bridge (TAB) converter-based ACsDC converter (TAB-ACsDC), and dual transformer-based asymmetrical triple port active bridge (DT-ATAB) converter-based ACsDC converter (DTATAB-ACsDC). A detailed analysis of these ACsDC converters and their verifications using simulations and experimental studies are presented, which depict that the proposed converters can be used effectively for producing ACsDC voltages. In this paper, a new nonisolated high-voltage-gain boost converter is proposed. The proposed converter is constructed by adding an additional inductor to a conventional three-level-boost (TLB) converter. When compared with the conventional boost and TLB converters, the proposed converter can achieve higher voltage conversion ratio with reduced voltage and current stresses in the switches. In particular, the proposed converter can reduce the losses of active devices by reducing the current of the switch compared to conventional converters, thus, can achieve high efficiency. In addition, the proposed converter automatically balances the output voltages for an unbalanced load without the need for any additional control strategy or auxiliary circuit. In this paper, we propose a Lyapunov-function-based controller for the flyback converter operating in the continuous conduction mode (CCM). The controller consists of a duty-ratio feedforward control unit and a Lyapunov-function-based feedback control unit. The duty-ratio feedforward signal is used to reduce the burden from the Lyapunov feedback controller. The control system guarantees global exponential stability of the closed-loop system and, hence, offers fast transient response under large-signal perturbations. In constructing the controller, we use the average model of the flyback CCM converter taking the parasitic components into account. In this paper, a power factor correction (PFC)-based switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive is proposed. Generally, the SRM drive is fed with a simple diode bridge rectifier followed by a bulky capacitor, which draws peaky current at low power factor and high-input-current total harmonic distortion (THD). Here, a dual output converter is proposed to control the SRM and to provide power quality improvement as well. This converter is a combination of Cuk and SEPIC converters, which produces two equal output voltages with neutral point N, to feed a midpoint converter of the SRM drive. The converter is designed to operate in discontinuous conduction mode of operation to obtain inherent PFC at supply side. The motor control is attained by regulating dc link voltage over a wide range. Test results on a prototype of the SRM drive demonstrate the excellent performance with high power factor and reduced input current THD. In this paper, a new type of matrix converter (MC) also called a single-phase high-frequency transformer isolated (HFTI) buck MC is proposed. The proposed converter can provide step-down operation of the input voltage with various types of output voltages such as in-phase and out-of-phase output voltages, rectified (or positive) output voltage, and output voltage with step-changed frequency. By incorporating HFT isolation, the proposed MC saves an extra bulky line frequency transformer, which is required for the conventional MCs to provide electrical isolation and safety, when used in application such as dynamic voltage restorers, etc. Two different circuit variations of the proposed HFTI MC are presented with and without continuous output currents, with the latter having less passive components. The safe-commutation strategy is also employed for the proposed HFTI MC to provide current path for the inductor during dead-time, which avoids switch voltage spikes without adding any snubber circuits. The operation principle and circuit analysis of the proposed MC are presented, and switching strategies are also developed to obtain various output voltages. This paper presents a new buck–boost converter. Unlike the single-switch buck–boost converter, the proposed converter has low-voltage stresses on semiconductors. Moreover, although both the conventional two-switch buck–boost (TSBB) and the proposed converters have the same number of passive and active components, and the proposed converter can reduce the conduction loss as a result of having fewer conducting components. Therefore, the proposed converter obtained a higher efficiency than the TSBB converter. Grid-connected power conversion systems for renewable energy sources must fulfill several requirements, e.g., the high efficiency, the reduced cost and complexity, and, quite often, the boost capabilities that is usually achieved using a front-end dc–dc boost converter before the inversion stage, leading to a two-stage architecture. Meanwhile, single-stage power conversion systems, which perform the boosting operation within the inversion one, offer some potential advantages, in terms of reducing the complexity and the volume of the whole system. Among several proposed options, the split-source inverter (SSI) has been recently proposed by Abdelhakim et al. as an alternative option with some interesting features to the commonly used Z-source inverter. Taking into account that the SSI is controlled by a single parameter, i.e., its dc and ac sides are controlled by the modulation index, it is of paramount importance to investigate its control scheme in grid-connected mode, which has never been studied yet. Hence, this paper models the SSI dc side and proposes a modified modulation scheme combined with the commonly used synchronous reference frame control technique to achieve a decoupled control scheme of the SSI in grid-connected mode, i.e., the dc and the ac sides of the SSI can be controlled independently, which is convenient for many applications. The introduced control scheme is analyzed and simulated using a MATLAB/Simulink model, where a reduced scale 1-kVA grid-connected SSI is designed and simulated for the sake of experimental validation. This paper proposes a phase-shift interleaving control method for variable-phase switched-capacitor (SC) converters that can perform voltage conversions with little electromagnetic interference over a wide range of operating condition. This is achieved by having multiple units of SC converter connected in parallel and an N-state hysteresis unit selection control scheme which works along the interleaving control to vary the number of converters in operation. By having the capacitors of inactive units connected to the output and the converters operating with output interleaving operation, the output capacitor that is typically required in SC converters for maintaining a small voltage ripple is made redundant in this configuration. A three-unit SC converter of the proposed configuration is described in this paper. Experimental results show that the proposed solution works satisfactorily with good regulation, input and output interleaving operations, and dynamic response for a wide operating range. This paper proposes a novel dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) topology based on reduced-order matrix converter modules. The topology utilizes two modules for selective and independent sequence voltage synthesis. As a result, the DVR proposed herein can compensate for balanced as well as unbalanced voltage sags/swells. Each module is realized using a vector-switching matrix converter. The entire topology is energy storage free, and each module is pulsewidth modulated using simple dc duty ratios. Single-phase power factor correction (PFC) ac–dc converters are widely used in the industry for ac–dc power conversion from single phase ac-mains to an isolated output dc voltage. Typically, for high-power applications, such converters use an ac–dc boost input converter followed by a dc–dc full-bridge converter. A new ac–dc single-stage high-power universal PFC ac input full-bridge, pulse-width modulated converter is proposed in this paper. The converter can operate with an excellent input power factor, continuous input and output currents, and a non-excessive intermediate dc bus voltage and has reduced number of semiconductor devices thus presenting a cost-effective novel solution for such applications. In this paper, the operation of the proposed converter is explained, a steady-state analysis of its operation is performed, and the results of the analysis are used to develop a procedure for its design. Neutral-point (NP)-clamped three-level inverter, which is a widely used topology of multilevel converters, suffers from the NP voltage drift as its main technical drawback. The nearest-three-virtual-vector (\NTV^2) modulation method can control the NP voltage balance for any load over the full range of inverter output voltage. However, compared with the nearest-three-vector (NTV) modulation method, \NTV^2 increases the switching frequency. This paper combines \NTV^2 with NTV, and the two methods are used alternately in a fundamental cycle. The duty-cycle coefficients of the redundant small vectors are analyzed to explore the intervals where NTV can control the NP voltage balance in a fundamental cycle. The proportional parameter, which represents the combination of the two methods in hybrid space vector pulsewidth modulation, can be selected to achieve a high-performance NP balance control and low switching frequency. By establishing the mathematical model of the current stress of the isolated bidirectional dc–dc converter (IBDC), this paper comparatively analyzes the performances of IBDC under traditional single-phase-shift control and dual-phase-shift (DPS) control. On this basis, this paper proposes a current-stress-optimized switching strategy for IBDC with DPS control, and the corresponding control scheme is designed and implemented. A new three-phase single-stage rectifier is proposed in this paper. This paper proposes a generalized hybrid modulation strategy to extend the operation of asymmetrical cascaded multilevel converters into the overmodulation region during fault conditions on the power cells. The proposed strategy makes use of the advantages of both space vector and carrier-based geometrical modulations to allow the converter to operate with a wide range of modulation indexes and fault conditions. Also, it does not need to precalculate various trajectories for the voltage reference, which would be a very complex task, as the shape of the converter space vector diagram is different for each type of fault condition. It is shown that different kinds of overmodulation can happen during faults on the power cells, and solutions are presented for each mode of operation. This paper presents a sampled-time-domain analysis to investigate the sampling effect on instantaneous switching frequency of a digitally implemented hysteresis current control (HCC) in a voltage source inverter (VSI). The generalized expression of the instantaneous switching frequency with the consideration of sampling frequency has been derived. The effect of variation in sampling frequency on effective hysteresis band and switching frequency has been analyzed. The difference between maximum to minimum switching frequency of a fixed-band HCC VSI depends on the sampling frequency of the digital controller. The sampling also generates a steady-state tracking error exceeding the fixed-band limit at the fundamental frequency for fixed hysteresis band operation. The analysis has been done to achieve fixed switching frequency with variable hysteresis band and with varying sampling period. The frequency spectrum of the load current is presented to show the effect of a digital controller. The sampling effect on the switching performance has been demonstrated for a single-phase VSI under different loading conditions. This paper proposes a power-factor-corrected bridgeless (BL) switched-mode power supply (SMPS) for welding applications that possesses output voltage control and current limiting feature even during extreme overloading conditions at the output terminals. Eliminating an input diode bridge rectifier minimizes conduction losses and improves thermal utilization of semiconductor devices. The front-end of the proposed SMPS consists of a BL boost converter operating in a continuous conduction mode to attain unity power factor, while at the rear end a pulse width modulation isolated full bridge dc–dc converter is used to regulate the output voltage. The design and implementation of this BL arc welding power supply (AWPS) is presented showing its fast dynamic response to supply voltage and load variations. The performance of the proposed AWPS is examined in terms of power factor, total harmonic distortion of the supply current, efficiency, and output current limit over a wide range of line/load variations. Test results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed AWPS in maintaining an impeccable power quality at utility interface apart from achieving an excellent output voltage regulation and current limiting capability. This paper presents a control scheme based on the predictive control theory and Petri nets (PNs) formalism to control a flying capacitor multilevel converter. The proposed scheme takes advantage of the benefits offered by the finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) methodology and the versatility of PNs to regulate the capacitor voltages and output current, simultaneously. The inclusion of PNs allows us to simplify the control scheme. A first PN is used to select, from a subset of switching states, the switching state that accomplishes both control objectives. This approach reduces the computational burden if compared with a typical predictive control scheme. Furthermore, a PN-based prediction scheme is used to predict the capacitor voltages. This prediction scheme uses only measurements of output voltage and current, which reduces the number of required sensors. This approach allows us to implement the internal capacitor voltages control independently if a multileg configuration is needed. In modern radio communications, the envelope of radio frequency (RF) signal features with large peak-to-average power ratio. This necessitates the adoption of linear power amplifiers (PAs). In order to achieve a high efficiency for linear PAs, envelope-tracking (ET) technique is employed, which provides PAs with a supply voltage that tracks the envelope of the transmitted RF signal instead of a constant voltage. This paper focuses on the series-form switch-linear hybrid ET power supply, where the switching-mode converter uses a multilevel converter. The method to select the setting voltages under the premise of ensuring the linearity of output voltage is presented. In addition, the values and number of the voltage levels of the multilevel converter are optimized using a precise loss model based on the probability density function of the envelope signal. Besides, the pulse-blank method is proposed to improve the system efficiency further. Finally, a prototype is built aiming for tracking the envelope signal of wideband code division multiple access, with 5-MHz bandwidth, 12–27 V output voltage, 4 W average, and 10 W peak output power. In this paper, a simple control method of the half-bridge (HB) LLC converter with one additional switch and capacitor in the primary side is proposed for wide-input-voltage applications with the hold-up time conditions. At nominal input, since the proposed method enables the HB LLC converter to operate with large transformer magnetizing inductance, it can reduce the conduction and switch turn-off losses in the primary side, which makes it highly efficient. On the other hand, during the hold-up time, since the proposed method increases the resonant capacitance by turning on one additional switch, the HB LLC converter can obtain high-voltage gain. In this paper, an improved model predictive control (MPC) of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) with reduced computational burden is proposed. A mathematical model of the MMC system based on the sum and difference of arm voltages are derived. Instead of determining the switching state of individual submodule (SM), the voltage levels of MMC are considered as control options based on the assumption that the SM capacitor voltages are well balanced. The further reduction of calculation effort is realized by using the tolerance band of capacitor voltages. The proposed MPC has a hierarchical structure. The cost function taking into account the ac-side current control, circulating current elimination and arm energy balancing is presented. The optimal voltage level, selected by the cost function, provides the voltage reference for the pulse width modulation modulator. The SM capacitor voltage balancing is done using a separate control loop. The proposed control strategy is investigated using an MMC high-voltage direct current system with 200 SMs in each arm in real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop tests. Phase-shifted carrier modulation is an industry standard in its application to multilevel H-bridge converters. The major advantage of this scheme over level-shifted and space vector modulation schemes is its inherent ability to evenly distribute losses between semiconductor devices. However, phase-shifted schemes suffer from harmonic degradation when operated at the low carrier frequencies required in high-power high-level number applications. This paper develops a model predictive modulation (MPM) scheme that achieves superior harmonic performance, compared to phase-shifted modulation, while ensuring equal semiconductor loss distribution. With respect to complete-enumeration-based predictive techniques, the proposed modulation significantly reduces the number of times the system cost function is evaluated. Reducing the number of calculations by several orders of magnitude ensures computational feasibility. Subharmonic oscillation is widely studied in switching converters under current mode control (CMC). Its boundary of occurrence in the design parameter space is well known in the case of an infinite-bandwidth current sensor. However, in a practical implementation, either a limited-bandwidth current sensor or an additional filter is used. This could have an effect on the system dynamics particularly for relatively high switching frequencies. This paper discusses the effect of the additional dynamics due to the finite-bandwidth current sensor or the additional filter on the stability and subharmonic oscillation boundaries in switching converters under CMC. It is shown that a simplified model, taking into account the dynamics of the inductor current and the sensor/filter, is enough to obtain accurate results concerning the prediction of the occurrence of subharmonic instabilities in switched converters. Design-oriented equations describing the occurrence of subharmonic oscillations are used to show some problems related to the additional dynamics on the ramp compensator design in a single-switch dc–dc converter working in continuous conduction mode. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a promising new topology for high-voltage applications. The MMC is made of several identical submodules. For proper operation, each submodule can be considered as a controlled voltage source where capacitor’s voltage should be maintained at a certain level. Besides, the minimization of the circulating current, which does not flow to the load, is crucial for achieving stable and efficient operation of the MMC. The interrelations among the load current, circulating current, and capacitor voltages complicate the MMC control. This paper aims to achieve stable and balanced voltage and current control with reduced circulating current in various operating conditions. The proposed control uses weighted model predictive control based on a normalized cost function to select the inverter switching patterns, which control the load current, while minimizing voltage fluctuation and circulating current. The weighting factors were selected based on minimizing the load-current total harmonic distortion (THD) and circulating current. The analysis is conducted on a low-power case study of single-phase four-cells MMC with possible extension to higher number of cells. The low-power three-level prototype is designed and built to validate this proposed method. Theoretical analysis, simulation, and experimental results are presented and compared. In recent years, modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are very popular in medium/high-voltage motor drive systems and high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) applications. The conventional model predictive control (MPC) strategies for the MMC are not practical due to their substantial calculation requirements, especially under high number of voltage levels. To solve this problem, a fast MPC strategy combined with a submodule (SM)-voltage sorting balancing method is proposed based on the discrete mathematical model derived for the MMC in this paper. By optimizing the implementation of the control objectives and simplifying the rolling optimization, the proposed strategy is simpler to expand to a system with larger number of SMs, with the amount of calculation reduced and the advantages of the conventional MPC algorithm reserved. In addition, the proposed control can minimize the $dv/dt$ of the output voltages. Both steady-state and transient performances are evaluated by a down-scaled three-phase MMC prototype under various experimental conditions, which validates the proposed fast MPC strategy. A three-phase single-switch discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) boost power factor correction (PFC) converter features zero-current turn on for the switch, no reverse recovery in the diode, a constant-switching-frequency operation, a simple control, and a low cost, which are suitable for low-to-medium-power and cost-sensitive applications. Due to the DCM, the energy transfer does not cover the whole switching cycle, the rms and peak values of the inductor current are large, and those of the switch and the diode are also large. This increases not only the current stress of the power components but also the conduction and switching turn-off losses, which lower the efficiency of the converter. An optimum utilization control of switching cycles is proposed in this paper to increase the critical boost inductance. The rms and peak current values of the main power components are reduced, and the conduction and switching turn-off losses are therefore decreased, leading to higher efficiency. Power-hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulations are used to test power hardware with the help of computer-based real-time simulations. Generally, buck-based power amplifiers that have good dynamic performance are used to construct a PHIL simulator because of their linear large signal control-to-output characteristics. However, their output voltage peak is limited to the applied dc input in the linear region of modulation. In this paper, a differential boost converter (DBC)-based power amplifier is proposed for PHIL simulations, which does not suffer from the aforementioned limitations of a buck-based amplifier. A conventional DBC exhibits highly nonlinear control-to-output behavior. A feedback linearization technique is used to linearize the DBC in a large signal and dynamic sense, which makes it suitable for PHIL applications. Using this power amplifier and a MATLAB/Simulink toolbox for real-time simulations, the PHIL simulator is constructed. Experimental results under various operating conditions of source voltages, such as unipolar, bipolar, transients in frequency, and the dc step, and various load conditions, such as reactive, nonlinear, and transient faults, are provided to confirm the efficacy of the proposed PHIL simulator. In this paper, a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) plus secondary-side phase-shift (SSPS) controlled full-bridge three-port converter (FB-TPC) is proposed for a renewable power system, which is derived by integrating two interleaved buck/boost circuits (IBBC) and a SSPS full-bridge converter (FBC), to interface the energy source, energy storage element, and output load simultaneously. The two switching legs are shared by the IBBC and FBC, which improves the active devices sharing ratio and power density. With PWM plus SSPS control scheme, decoupled power control can be realized and the converter can achieve wide input voltage range power conversion. In addition, zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of both the primary and secondary switches are achieved in a wide range. Furthermore, the circulating current can be greatly eliminated, which helps to reduce conduction losses. Moreover, the voltage stresses on the secondary rectifier are effectively suppressed since the power switches and diodes are clamped to output voltage. The operation principles, output characteristics, ZVS performances, and control strategy are analyzed in detail. Featuring high bandwidth and high efficiency, the switch-linear hybrid envelope tracking (SLH-ET) power supply has been gaining considerable attentions. This paper proposes a new configuration for SLH-ET power supply, which consists of a switching-mode converter with a step-wave approach and a linear amplifier connected in parallel. The switches in the switching-mode converter are operated only one time in every tracking period, leading to reduced switching loss and, thus, a higher efficiency. The number of the voltage levels and the voltage difference between the adjacent steps are analyzed in terms of the voltage synthesis accuracy and voltage total harmonic distortion. A full feedforward of the output voltage scheme is adopted to make the switching-mode converter provide the most load power and the linear amplifier only provide the ripple current that resulted by the switching-mode converter. Thus, the overall efficiency is improved. A prototype is built aiming for 300-kHz sine-wave tracking, with a 10–26-V output voltage and a 50-W peak output power. While current-mode control of dc–dc converters provides numerous benefits over voltage-mode control, previous models of the control strategy have been limited to the form of classical control models. Through the use of a state-space averaged (SSA) model of current-mode control, both the open-loop and closed-loop circuit parameters of open-loop control-to-output frequency response, conducted susceptibility, input admittance, output impedance, and any other desired response can be easily obtained. In this paper, SSA models of current-mode-controlled converters are derived and presented for buck, boost, and flyback topologies operating in continuous conduction mode. The new model allows for simpler and more accurate modeling than possible with previous methods, facilitates the modeling of cascaded converters, and allows for the use of state-variable feedback and other modern control methods in applications that use current-mode control. A single-objective predictive control method that deals with four main control objectives applied to a multivariable single-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped converter operating as an active power filter is proposed in this paper. The four control objectives are to self-support the dc-bus voltage under load variations, to compensate the reactive power and the current harmonics, and to balance the dc capacitor voltages by using a predefined combination of the redundant switching states of the converter. The main contribution of the proposed method is that these objectives are accomplished without using weighting factors in the cost function, which eliminates problems such as multiobjective optimization or additional empirical procedures for determination of these factors. As a result, the method is easy to implement and rapidly selects the optimal voltage to improve the dynamic-state performance. Experimental results from a 2-kVA prototype are presented to prove that the method is valid for single-phase compensation. The well-known effect of model parameter errors' issue, which is inherent in predictive control methods, is also tested to confirm that the harmonic distortion in the grid current is below 5% even when the predictive model has a 25% error between actual and theoretically estimated grid impedance values. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) becomes attractive for medium- or high-power applications because of the advantages of high modularity, availability, and power quality. One of the technical challenges associated with an MMC is the balancing of the capacitors' voltages. In this paper, a voltage-balancing control method is proposed for the MMC under phase-shifted carrier-based pulsewidth modulation. The proposed voltage-balancing method uses the linearization method for pulse sorting without arm current measurement, which can control the capacitor charge transfer to balance the capacitor voltage in the MMC. In the proposed method, the voltagebalancing algorithm is implemented in each carrier wave period, which reduces the computational intensity and burden. In addition, the arm current can also be improved with the proposed method. The simulation studies with the professional tool PSCAD/EMTDC are conducted, and a downscale MMC prototype is also tested with the proposed method. This paper presents a power factor correction (PFC)-based bridgeless isolated Cuk converter-fed brushless dc (BLDC) motor drive. A variable dc link voltage of the voltage source inverter (VSI) feeding the BLDC motor is used for its speed control. This allows the operation of VSI in fundamental frequency switching to achieve an electronic commutation of the BLDC motor for reduced switching losses. A bridgeless configuration of an isolated Cuk converter is derived for the elimination of the front-end diode bridge rectifier to reduce conduction losses in it. The proposed PFC-based bridgeless isolated Cuk converter is designed to operate in discontinuous inductor current mode to achieve an inherent PFC at the ac mains. The proposed drive is controlled using a single voltage sensor to develop a cost-effective solution. The proposed drive is implemented to achieve a unity power factor at the ac mains for a wide range of speed control and supply voltages.
