This paper presents a new topology based on a modified class-E resonant inverter used as an LED series current regulator. The proposed topology behaves as a controllable nondissipative impedance that adjusts the current flowing through the lamp. In this circuit, the LED is placed at the dc side of the class-E inverter, in series with the input filter inductance. The power handled by the ac side is sent back to the input by means of two diodes. Despite the addition of these two diodes, the converter maintains all the advantages of the class-E inverter: low component count, simple control, and extremely low switching losses. The LED current can be controlled with a small variation of the operating frequency. This way, the low-frequency current ripple of the lamp can be strongly reduced even when there is a considerably high input voltage excursion, such as the one expected in electrolyticless high-power-factor LED ballast. In this paper, a new nonisolated high step-up dc–dc converter is proposed. Active–passive inductor cells (APICs) are used to extend the topology. The ability to achieve high gains is the main merit of the proposed topology. The proposed converter operates based on parallel charging and series discharging of the inductors. The converter also achieves high step-up voltage gain with appropriate duty cycle and low voltage and current stress on the power switches and diodes. The proposed converter is analyzed in operation modes. The main parameters of the converter such as voltage gain, voltage stress of semiconductor devices are calculated to compare with other structures. Considering the output voltage ripple and filter size, the proposed converter is designed. Moreover, the losses and efficiency of the converter are calculated. Due to current sensor errors, tolerance of power switching devices, and asymmetry of PWM gating driving pulses, grid-connected inverters without isolation transformer usually have certain amount of dc components injected to the ac grid. Many efforts, such as using a blocking capacitor, a current dc component feedback control, and a voltage dc component feedback control have been introduced to try to suppress the dc injection to the grid. This paper proposes a novel control strategy of suppressing dc current injection to the grid for a three-phase inverter by accurately sensing the dc component of line voltages of three-phase inverter and adding a dc component control loop. A dc suppression control scheme is presented, and the suppression performance of the proposed dc rejection method is evaluated and compared with the traditional method. This paper presents a fast fuzzy logic control algorithm for a Takagi–Sugeno–Kang fuzzy controller, which is applied to integrated \textLED drivers with the purpose of getting a good dynamic response and the reduction in the low-frequency (120 Hz) ripple. The algorithm uses the high-speed mathematical engine of a digital signal controller \text(DSC) that is capable to achieve fast multiplications during a common one-cycle instruction. Therefore, the execution time of the controller is improved with the use of a \textDSC. A scaling procedure is included in the program in order to use and to improve the accuracy of the multiplications and divisions in the \textDSC mathematical engine. A low-range \textDSC was used to program the proposed controller; therefore, the cost is affordable for \textLED driver applications. The fuzzy control curve was approximated to the sliding mode control \text(SMC) curve with the purpose of getting some of the good advantages of the \textSMC strategy like a good dynamic performance. This paper presents a complete method that is used to balance dc link voltages in a cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) multilevel rectifier. Recently, such converters have been the subject of extensive research due to their suitability for high-power applications. One requirement in using a multilevel active rectifier at high levels of power is to limit the switching losses by reducing the switching frequency to a minimum. Another requirement for these converters is to ensure that individual dc link capacitor voltages for each cell of the converter are always balanced to ensure controllability and to limit stress on the converter cells. This paper presents a complete method in solving both of these problems using a selective-harmonic-elimination pulsewidth-modulation scheme. The scheme utilizes a simple controller to track each cell dc link capacitor voltage magnitude and accordingly biases the power flowing into each cell to ensure that the voltages across each cell capacitor converge. This is the case even when the loads attached to the individual cells are not balanced. The open-loop control scheme presented in part I of this paper for a dual five-level-inverter-fed induction motor (IM) drive with two dc power supplies maintains dc-link capacitor voltage balancing and common-mode voltage (CMV) elimination throughout the operating range of the drive. The operating limitation of the proposed open-loop control scheme to take corrective action toward the existing unbalance in the dc-link-capacitor voltages is also pointed out in part I of this paper. As a solution to this, a simple closed-loop control scheme, which is based only on the switching-state redundancy, is proposed in this part of the paper. The proposed closed-loop control scheme not only prevents further unbalancing of capacitor voltages but also takes corrective actions to bring back the capacitor voltages in the balanced state. The proposed closed-loop scheme achieves dc-link capacitor voltage balancing and elimination of CMV together in the complete modulation range, including overmodulation of up to the 24-step operation. The proposed control scheme does not affect the output fundamental voltage generated by the inverter, as it effectively utilizes only the availability of redundant switching states of the inverter, and does not call for additional power circuit hardware. In this paper, a nonisolated bidirectional dc–dc converter is presented. The proposed converter consists of two boost converters to enhance the voltage gain. Four power switches with their body diodes are employed in the proposed converter. Also, two inductors and a capacitor are used as passive components. The input current is divided to the inductors which causes the efficiency to be high. The voltage gain of the proposed converter is higher than the conventional cascaded bidirectional buck/boost converter (CCBC) in step-up mode. Besides, the voltage gain in step-down mode is lower than CCBC. Besides, the efficiency of the proposed converter more than CCBC while the total stress on active switches are same. The simple structure of the proposed converter causes its control to be easy. The steady-state analysis of the proposed converter is discussed in this paper thoroughly. The stress on converters’ devices and the efficiency of the proposed converter and CCBC are compared in this paper. This paper presents an active cross-connected modular multilevel converter (AC-MMC) based on series-connected half-bridge modules. It is intended for completely enhancing the performance of a medium-voltage motor drive system in the full speed range from standstill to rated speed under all load conditions. The proposed AC-MMC circuit is characterized by the cross connection of upper and lower arm middle taps through a branch of series-connected half-bridge converters, which have an identical voltage and current rating with the submodules in the upper and lower arms. This cross-connected branch provides a physical power transfer channel for the upper and lower arms. By properly controlling the amount of high-frequency current flowing through the cross-connected branch, the power balance between the upper and lower arms is achieved even at a zero/low motor speed under constant torque condition. Meanwhile, no common-mode voltage is introduced in the whole speed range. A control strategy with focus on submodule capacitor voltage control is also proposed in this paper to guarantee the normal converter operation. Simulation results obtained from a 4160-V, 1-MW model verify the feasibility of the proposal. Phase-shifted carrier modulation is an industry standard in its application to multilevel H-bridge converters. The major advantage of this scheme over level-shifted and space vector modulation schemes is its inherent ability to evenly distribute losses between semiconductor devices. However, phase-shifted schemes suffer from harmonic degradation when operated at the low carrier frequencies required in high-power high-level number applications. This paper develops a model predictive modulation (MPM) scheme that achieves superior harmonic performance, compared to phase-shifted modulation, while ensuring equal semiconductor loss distribution. With respect to complete-enumeration-based predictive techniques, the proposed modulation significantly reduces the number of times the system cost function is evaluated. Reducing the number of calculations by several orders of magnitude ensures computational feasibility. Proper use of phase-controlled switching technology by controlling the making or breaking of the circuit breaker (CB) at predetermined phase angles of current or voltage can improve the service life of the CB, avoid relay protection device from mal-operation, and reduce the impact on the power grid when power equipment or load is energized or taken out. This paper proposes a novel phase-controlled switching method to address the influence of residual flux for three-phase wye winding unloaded transformers with three limbs, such as large capacitor variable frequency transformer or mine explosion-proof transformer. The optimal operation phase angle for CBs is firstly obtained via theoretical analysis. A model based on the alternative transients program/the electromagnetic transients program (ATP/EMTP) is then built to simulate the transient procedure of a power transformer during breaking and making. The simulated results confirm that the proposed switching strategy can reduce the excitation inrush current effectively when the unloaded transformers are energized. Induction heating (IH) is a key technology in modern household appliances and industries. Modern design trends require the design of high efficiency and multiple output power converters. This paper proposes a dual-output boost resonant full-bridge topology to provide a multiple-output converter with improved performance while keeping a cost-effective performance. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. A three-level NPC inverter is completely mature and very well-established topology in high-power applications. However, the three-level NPC inverter has an inheritance problem of the neutral-point voltage unbalancing due to the split dc-link capacitors. This structure can cause large neutral-point voltage ripple. Furthermore, output currents of the three-level NPC inverter are distorted by the neutral-point voltage ripple. Therefore, the neutral-point voltage must be controlled. In this paper, a new DPWM method using two different offsets for the neutral-point ripple reduction is proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed DPWM method is verified by using the simulation and the experimental results. A conventional asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) converter is widely used for dc–dc stage in low-to-medium power system. However, since the asymmetric operation of AHB converter causes the low efficiency over entire load condition, the conventional AHB converter is not usually considered for the candidate of server power system. In order to overcome the problems of the conventional AHB converter, a wide zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) range AHB converter with a clamp switch and a clamp diode is proposed in this paper. The proposed AHB converter (PAHBC) replaces a low-side clamp diode with a MOSFET switch and adds an auxiliary winding, which changes the transformer turns-ratio. From these modifications and the pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) control of clamp switch, the PAHBC can be designed optimally at nominal input condition and obtains additional dc gain at hold-up time condition. These advantages achieve the high conversion efficiency over the entire load condition. DC-link capacitors in power electronic converters are a major constraint on improvement of power density as well as reliability. Evaluation of the dc-link capacitors in terms of power loss, ageing, and failure rate will play an important role in design stages of the next-generation power converters. This paper proposes a new evaluation circuit for dc-link capacitors used in a high-power three-phase inverter, which is intended for testing power loss, failure rate, ageing, and so on. The evaluation circuit produces a practical ripple current waveform and a dc bias voltage into a capacitor under test, in which the ripple current is equivalent to that generated by the three-phase inverter on the dc link. The evaluation circuit employs a full-scale current-rating and downscaled voltage-rating inverter for producing the ripple current, so that the power rating of the evaluation circuit is much smaller than that of a full-scale current-rating and full-scale voltage-rating inverter. The closed-loop distribution system has become a trend, owing to increasing demands of electric power reliability in high-tech parks or in metropolitan areas. Harmonic propagation caused by power-factor correction capacitors and system inductors may lead to significant harmonic amplification throughout a closed-loop distribution feeder. This paper proposes a novel equivalent model of a closed-loop distribution feeder that a closed-loop distribution feeder can be equivalent to a radial feeder. This paper analyzes the harmonic propagation in a closed-loop distribution feeder and proposes a long-feeder simulator-based active power filter (LFS-APF) to damp out the harmonic propagation, based on the novel equivalent model. The proposed LFS-APF is installed at the middle point of a closed-loop feeder. The LFS-APF has better capability of harmonic damping than the resistive APF (RAPF), especially in response to variation of both nonlinear loads and power-factor correction capacitors or even if the installation location has to deviate from the middle point. This paper studies the coupling between the capacitor voltage control loops of diode-clamped (or functionally equivalent) multilevel multileg (multiphase) dc–ac converters. From a complete model of the plant revealing the coupling, a simple approach consisting in multiplying the vector of control commands by a constant matrix is proposed to decouple the control problem and achieve a better controller performance. It is known that the ripple-based control of a switching dc–dc converter benefits from a faster transient response than a conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) control switching dc–dc converter. However, ripple-based control switching dc–dc converters may suffer from fast-scale oscillation. In order to achieve fast transient response and ensure the stable operation of a switching dc–dc converter over a wide load range, based on a conventional pulse train (PT) control technique, a peak capacitor current PT (PCC-PT) control technique is proposed in this paper. With a buck converter as an example, the operating modes, steady-state performance, and transient respond performance of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter are presented and assessed. To eliminate fast-scale oscillation, circuit and control parameter design considerations are given. An accurate discrete iteration model of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter is established, based on which the effects of circuit parameters on the stability of the converter operating in a discontinuous current mode (DCM), mixed DCM-continuous conduction mode (CCM), and CCM are studied. This paper presents a transformerless inverter topology, which is capable of simultaneously solving leakage current and pulsating power issues in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. Without adding any additional components to the system, the leakage current caused by the PV-to-ground parasitic capacitance can be bypassed by introducing a common-mode (CM) conducting path to the inverter. The resulting ground leakage current is therefore well controlled to be below the regulation limit. Furthermore, the proposed inverter can also eliminate the well-known double-line-frequency pulsating power that is inherent in single-phase PV systems. By properly injecting CM voltages to the output filter capacitors, the pulsating power can be decoupled from the dc-link. Therefore, it is possible to use long-lifetime film capacitors instead of electrolytic capacitors to improve the reliability of the PV system. The mechanism of leakage current suppression and the closed-loop control of pulsating power decoupling are discussed in this paper in detail. A 500-W prototype was also built and tested in the laboratory, and both simulation and experimental results are finally presented to show the excellent performance of the proposed PV inverter. The grid-connected modular multilevel converter (MMC) is very likely to operate under asymmetric grid conditions. Such a converter features several unique characteristics, which make its analysis different from other types of power converters in similar cases. In this paper, the three well-established control techniques, i.e., balanced current and negative sequence current injection for active/reactive power oscillation elimination, are tailored for the MMC case taking into account grid current limitation under fault conditions. Since the focus is laid on the MMC design impact during grid asymmetries, the three methods are compared in terms of branch energy variation increase as well as maximum achievable active power transfer. Moreover, the effect of circulating current second-order harmonic injection for capacitive storage reduction as well as dc-link oscillation elimination is also studied. This paper proposes a new topology for a three-phase open-delta connection ac–ac converter based on the switched capacitor principle. The topology employs only capacitors and switches in the power stage, which can provide high efficiency and power density. It operates in open loop with constant values for the gain, duty cycle, and frequency. The converter is bidirectional and thus it can step-down or step-up the output voltages. A 3.5-kW prototype was built, tested and used to verify the theoretical analysis for resistive, inductive, and nonlinear loads. This paper proposes a modular isolated dc–dc converter, based on the input-series and output-series association of the full-bridge PWM dc–dc converter with capacitive filter. The main attribute of the proposed architecture is its ability to provide self-balance of the input and output voltages across the individual converters, without voltage loop control scheme, both in the steady-state and transient operations. Circuit operation, theoretical analysis, and modeling are included in this paper, along with experimental results taken from a laboratory prototype with four modules, 1600-Vdc total input voltage, 1600-Vdc total output voltage, 4-kW output power, and 40-kHz switching frequency. This paper proposes an improved performance interactive distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) to address the limitations of conventional current control mode (CCM) and voltage control mode (VCM) operations. The proposed interactive scheme provides smooth transfer of modes of operation while remaining connected in the distribution system. In normal operation, the DSTATCOM operates in CCM to make source currents balanced, sinusoidal, and at a unity power factor. During voltage disturbances, the CCM operation cannot improve load voltage. In that case, DSTATCOM operation is changed to VCM, which maintains a constant voltage across the sensitive loads. Hence, this interactive DSTATCOM ensures continuous, flexible, and robust operation of the load. Moreover, the filter current requirements are reduced in the proposed scheme, which reduces the losses in the filter and feeder, improves inverter efficiency, and requires a reduced-rating inverter for sag mitigation. The principle of operation and control for both operating modes is analyzed. The detailed process of the flexible transfer between the two modes is derived. Deadbeat predictive control algorithms for CCM as well as VCM operation are developed for fast operation during mode transfers. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is increasingly becoming popular for multi-MW drive systems. One of the main technical challenges associated with the operation of MMC for adjustable-speed drives is the large magnitude of submodule (SM) capacitor voltage ripple under constant-torque low-speed operation. This paper proposes two new control strategies to reduce the magnitude of the SM capacitor voltage ripple in the MMC-based adjustable-speed drive systems under constant-torque low-speed operation. The proposed control strategies are based on injecting a square-wave common-mode voltage at the ac-side and a circulating current within the phase-legs to attenuate the low-frequency components of the SM capacitor voltages. The frequency spectrum of the injected circulating current consists of components in the vicinity of either the common-mode frequency or the common-mode frequency and third harmonic of the common-mode frequency. This paper also provides: i) a theoretical comparison of the proposed control strategies with the existing ones; ii) a controller design methodology to systematically determine the controller gains of the proposed control strategies; and iii) a theoretical proof of stability of the proposed control strategies and their design methodology based on Lyapunov analysis of singularly perturbed nonlinear non-autonomous systems. A set of experimental results for various case studies on a laboratory-scale prototype are provided to support the theoretical proof of stability of the proposed control strategies and their design methodology, and to show the superior performance of the proposed strategies over the existing strategy. In this paper, we report on the new design of an electric field sensor based on piezoelectric bending effect in a capacitive-sensing method. The bipolar electric field sensor with a range from −22 to 22 kV/cm concentrates on a bending structure to enlarge the piezoelectric effect and to control its bending orientation. It performs with a much higher sensitivity of 0.448 pF/(kV/cm) or 5.78%/(kV/cm) and has a better resolution of 7.0 V/cm at $E=0$. Factors influencing the capacitance response are also discussed, which might further optimize the sensitivity. Moreover, the analytical model and experimental results make an agreement on the reasonability of this electric field sensor, gaining an insightful guide to the potential capacitive-sensing electric field chip sensor widely distributed in sensor networks. This paper proposes a technique to suppress low-order harmonics for an open-end winding induction motor drive for a full modulation range. One side of the machine is connected to a main inverter with a dc power supply, whereas the other inverter is connected to a capacitor from the other side. Harmonic suppression (with complete elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonics) is achieved by realizing dodecagonal space vectors using a combined pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control for the two inverters. The floating capacitor voltage is inherently controlled during the PWM operation. The proposed PWM technique is shown to be valid for the entire modulation range, including overmodulation and six-step mode of operation of the main inverter. The quasi-Z-source cascade multilevel inverter (qZS-CMI) presents many advantages over conventional CMI when applied in photovoltaic (PV) power systems. For example, the qZS-CMI provides the balanced dc-link voltage and voltage boost ability, saves one-third modules, etc. However, the qZS-CMI still cannot overcome the intermittent and stochastic fluctuation of solar power injected to the grid. This paper proposes an energy stored qZS-CMI-based PV power generation system. The system combines the qZS-CMI and energy storage by adding an energy stored battery in each module to balance the stochastic fluctuations of PV power. This paper also proposes a control scheme for the energy stored qZS-CMI-based PV system. The proposed system can achieve the distributed maximum power point track for PV panels, balance the power between different modules, and provide the desired power to the grid. By combining the conventional switched-mode power converters with advanced switched capacitor (SC) techniques, a plurality of single-switch current-balancing circuits is developed to drive multiple light-emitting diode (LED) strings in this paper. Compared with the existing current-balancing LED drivers, the proposed drive circuits exhibit their attractive advantages in size and cost efficiency because just one active switch and one magnetic device are required. LED strings' current can be regulated by controlling the duty ratio of the switch in pulsewidth-modulation mode. Both advanced resonant and nonresonant SC methods are introduced to optimize the performance of the proposed LED drivers. This paper proposes an improved half-bridge inverter with wide-input-voltage capability for ozone-driven circuits. The study is motivated because the limited regulation of input voltage often affects the operation flexibility of ozone-driven circuits. Therefore, a modification of a half-bridge inverter along with a multiwinding coil design is proposed in this study, anticipating an increase in the range of input voltage and benefiting the industry applications. To confirm the practicality of this method, a hardware circuit was made with extensive validation. Experimental outcomes support the feasibility of this proposed method for ozone generators, exhibiting a potential of the method extending to other voltage-source applications. This paper proposes a novel high-conversion-ratio high-efficiency isolated bidirectional dc–dc converter. The proposed converter is operated in the step-down stage. The dc-blocking capacitor in the high-voltage side is used to reduce the voltage on the transformer, and the current-doubler circuits are used in the low-voltage side to reduce the output current ripple. The energy stored in the leakage inductance is recycled to the dc-blocking capacitor. When the proposed converter is operated with a step-up function, dual current-fed circuits on the low-voltage side are used to reduce the current ripples and conduction losses of the switches in the low-voltage side. The voltage-doubler circuit in the high-voltage side increases the conversion ratio. The proposed converter can achieve high conversion with high efficiency. Experimental results based on a prototype implemented in the laboratory with a high voltage of 200 V, low voltage of 24 V, and output power of 200 W verify the performance of the proposed converter. A self-excited induction generator (SEIG) can be a candidate for isolated applications because it does not require any external exciting power but can independently generate electricity. It is also a good candidate for auxiliary brakes in heavy vehicles for several reasons. First, the power efficiency in a brake system is not important as compared with motors or generators. Second, an SEIG can be controlled by a simple electrical circuit. Third, it can be used for regenerative braking. Finally, it is very robust. In this paper, an auxiliary brake for heavy vehicles is proposed by adapting an SEIG and its analog control circuit. The brake structure is the same as that in conventional eddy current brakes but operates as an SEIG. The suggested control circuit does not adopt an electric controller unit but only consists of simple electric devices. A miniature model was designed and manufactured, and the experimental results using the prototype verify that the proposed brake system, including the controller, is very useful. This paper presents a capacitor voltage balancing control applicable to any multilevel dc–ac converter formed by a single set of series-connected capacitors implementing the dc link and semiconductor devices, such as the diode-clamped topology. The control is defined for any number of dc-link voltage levels and converter legs (for single-phase and multiphase systems), guaranteeing the capacitor voltage control for any modulation index value and load (from idle mode to full power). The associated control loop small-signal transfer function is presented, from which optimum compensator design guidelines are derived. The improvement in control performance is verified through simulation and experiments comparing with a previous balancing control strategy in a four-level three-phase dc–ac conversion system. This paper proposes a searching strategy based on particle swarm optimization, combined with a fuzzy-deduced fitness evaluator (FDFE), to find the optimal multistage charging pattern that delivers the most discharged capacity within the shortest charging time (CT). The objective function of the optimization problem is to maximize the cost effectiveness for the applied charging pattern based on the CT and normalized discharged capacity (NDC). Therefore, this paper proposes an FDFE to combine CT and NDC into a unified cost function to properly evaluate the multiple performance characteristics index in the charge problem. The experimental results show that the obtained pattern is capable of charging the batteries to over 88% capacity within 51 min. Compared with the conventional constant current–constant voltage method, the CT, the obtained life cycle, and the charging efficiency of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery for the devised approach are improved by approximately 56.8%, 21%, and 0.4%, respectively. This paper presents a dc-to-dc converter, which offers continuous input and output energy flow and low input current ripple, applicable and mandatory for photovoltaic (PV) arrays and maximum power tracking applications. The PV array yields exponential curves for current and voltage where maximum power occurs at the curve's mutual knee. Conventional dc-to-dc converters have a relatively high input current ripple which causes high power losses when connected to nonlinear sources like PV arrays. The proposed converter maximizes the power that can be sourced from the PV array, without the need of any electrolytic filtering capacitance. This paper studies different circulating current references for the modular multilevel converter. The circulating current references are obtained from the instantaneous values of the output current and modulation signal of the phase leg. Therefore, the determination of the amplitude and phase of the output current is not needed, which is a significant improvement compared to other methods such as those based on injecting specific harmonics in the circulating currents. Among the different methods studied in this paper, a new method is introduced, which is able to reduce the capacitor voltage ripples compared to the other methods. A closed-loop control is also proposed which is able to track the circulating current references. With the discussed methods, the average values of the capacitor voltages are maintained at their reference while the voltage ripples are kept low. This paper presents a new control method and a detailed project methodology for the optimized connection method of two converters, aiming to reduce the redundant power processing, in order to supply high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with reduced capacitance and high efficiency, directly from the ac line. This connection method allows dealing with two major issues related to the LED driver: capacitance reduction and efficiency increasing. The first converter provides power factor correction, whereas the second converter controls the current through the LED. The basic idea consists in making the second converter to process only the low-frequency ripple (LFR) of the first converter, thus smoothing the LED current. In this way, the LFR is managed by the second stage, so that the capacitance of the first stage can be significantly reduced. The proposed control method can achieve better results for the low-frequency compensation. In addition to that, a high power factor and a low harmonic content are obtained, fulfilling the IEC 61000-3-2 Class C requirements. A laboratory prototype with a rated power of 75 W and an input voltage of 220 \Vrms/60 Hz was built in order to show the feasibility of the idea. In a photovoltaic (PV)- or fuel-cell-based grid-connected power system, a high step-up dc–dc converter is required to boost the low voltage of a PV or fuel cell to a relatively high bus voltage for the downstream dc–ac grid-connected inverter. To integrate the advantages of the high voltage gain of a switched-capacitor (SC) converter and excellent output regulation of a switching-mode dc–dc converter, a method of combining the two types of converters is proposed in this paper. The basic idea is that when the switch is turned on, the inductor is charged, and the capacitors are connected in series to supply the load, and when the switch is turned off, the inductor releases energy to charge multiple capacitors in parallel, whose voltages are controlled by a pulsewidth modulation technique. Thus, a high voltage gain of the dc–dc converter can be obtained with good regulation. Based on this principle, a series of new topologies are derived, and the operating principles and voltage gains of the proposed converters are analyzed. Filters for switching ripple attenuation are essential at the input, and sometimes at the output for certain applications, for the deployment of matrix converters (MCs). Due to the absence of inertial elements in the MC structure and the consequent tight input–output coupling, the filter parameters significantly affect its dynamic behavior. This paper presents an exhaustive filter design method for synchronous applications of the MC in power systems. Apart from the usual considerations of ripple attenuation, voltage regulation, reactive current loading, and internal losses, this paper also addresses additional constraints which may be imposed by requirements of dynamic performance and reliable commutation. This paper presents a modulation strategy for symmetrical cascaded multilevel converters that simultaneously balances the individual DC voltages and reduces switching losses by eliminating redundant or unnecessary commutations. The voltage regulation is based on a 1-bit digital signal indicating whether the DC link voltage of each H-bridge is above or below the set point. The system command identifies commutations that can be suppressed without causing output voltage distortion, thus reducing converter losses. The voltage balancing is reached by postponing each switching commutation for a short lapse of time. In this paper, two new topologies are proposed for multilevel inverters. The proposed topologies consist of a combination of the conventional series and the switched capacitor inverter units. The proposed topologies reduce the number of switches and isolated dc voltage sources, the variety of the dc voltage source values, and the size and cost of the system in comparison with the conventional topologies. In addition, the proposed topologies can double the input voltage without a transformer. There is no need for complicated methods to balance the capacitor voltage. Delta-channel modular multilevel converter (MMC) proved successful for zero/low-fundamental-frequency operation without injecting common-mode voltage. However, its application in a medium-voltage variable-speed motor drive is not verified. This paper develops a variable-speed motor drive system based on a delta-channel MMC. The converter power losses together with the compensation strategies are analyzed, and accordingly the submodule capacitor voltage controls are elaborated. The converter controls cascaded with the advanced motor control form the entire control scheme for the drive system. The system performances are tested based on a 4160-V 1-MW simulation model and 208-V 5-kW experimental setup. The results show that the delta-channel MMC along with the proposed control algorithm performs satisfactorily in a driving motor from standstill to a rated speed even under rated torque condition. This paper introduces a switched-capacitor dc combiner suitable for energy harvesting applications. Since the dc voltage is small, addition of the voltages from different sources can boost the final output voltage with self-startup capability. This approach is valid for any number of dc voltage sources. To prove the energy harvesting principle, three sources are selected. The design of the three-input dc combiner, with no closed-loop controller, is fabricated in 0.13-\mu\textm CMOS technology and the chip area is 1.5 × 1.5 \textmm^2. With integrated tunable thyristor-based differential oscillators, the chip can combine power from all three inputs. Manual frequency modulation is used to deliver the maximum power to the load. The system has proven to be functional even if one or two of the sources is/are weak or not available. Finally, for indoor conditions, the power from three different solar cells is combined where 70 $\mu$ W is harvested with an open-circuit voltage of 1.4 V and the short-circuit current of 160 $\mu$A. Multilevel cascade H-bridge (CHB) converters are one of the promising solutions for medium- and large-scale grid-connected photovoltaic power plants. However, there is a lack of a complete study about their operation during voltage sags. This paper proposes a flexible control strategy for the operation of photovoltaic grid-connected CHB inverters during unbalanced voltage sags. The key novelty is that the proposed strategy is able to inject both active and reactive powers to the grid with either balanced or unbalanced currents, while ensuring that all dc-link capacitor voltages remain balanced. This paper proposes an improved dc transformer (NDCT hereinafter) based on switched capacitor with reduced switches for the integration of low-voltage dc energy storage systems and medium-voltage dc power distribution grid. The topology, phase-shift (PS) shoot-through and multiple PS modulations, and voltage, current, and power characterizations, as well as commutation characterization and control strategy, are proposed and analyzed comprehensively. This paper presents a new interleaved coupled-inductor nonisolated bidirectional dc–dc converter that provides high voltage gain ratio (VGR), low ripple current at the low-voltage side (LVS), and soft switching. The high VGR is obtained by connecting in series the outputs of an interleaved bidirectional buck–boost converter and a dual-active half-bridge converter, using the turns ratio of a coupled inductor. Since the voltage of the high-voltage side is shared between the converters outputs, the voltage stress across the active switches decrease. The active switches turn ON under zero-voltage switching condition in both directions. Moreover, the low current ripple at the LVS is achieved due to the applied interleaved technique. By employing the phase-shift angle modulation, the output voltage is regulated. The proposed converter is analyzed in details and a 900-W experimental prototype with 48-V input voltage and 400-V output voltage under 100-kHz switching frequency is implemented to verify the theoretical results. Energy harvesting from various ambient energy sources keeps gaining interest to deal with the challenges arising from more and more widespread Internet of Things applications in consumer electronics and industrial applications such as remote sensing. However, available energy is scarce and designers must comply with small size package and thermal dissipation that inevitably lead to compromises. This paper presents a transformer-free and self-powered oscillator that can be directly powered from a very low dc voltage source such as a thermoelectric module and able to deliver dc bias output. Using off-the-shelves parts, such a design is less cumbersome and gives more freedom to designers while tailoring their circuits with respect to their applications. The oscillator consists of a modified Hartley oscillator including a supplementary capacitor that provides a bias voltage in its output. Theoretical analysis is validated through experimental measurements showing that the proposed solution could be deployed in buildings and/or wearable devices as small and cheap complete microgenerators using for example thermoelectric elements or microbial fuel cells. Due to the relatively low output voltage of photovoltaic (PV) source, a high step-up converter with high efficiency is needed when the PV source is connected to the power grid. In this paper, the design and development of a novel interleaved tri-state boost converter (ITBC), which produces lower ripple and exhibits better dynamic response, is discussed. Boost converters are frequently connected in parallel and operate in an interleaving mode for the reduction of ripple content in source current and in output voltage. In this way, interleaved boost converter (IBC) is conceived, which improves the power handling capabilities and increases the overall system rating. It also has the advantage of reduction of the ripple content in source current and output voltage, but when control-to-output transfer function of IBC is derived under continuous conduction mode of operation, then a right-half-plane (RHP) zero appears in the transfer function. Due to the presence of RHP zero, IBC has nonminimum phase problem, which deteriorates the dynamic performance. The tri-state boost converter (TBC) is the best choice for RHP zero elimination, but due to the extra freewheeling mode, ripple content will also be increased. The proposed converter is a parallel combination of two TBC and operates in an interleaving mode. Therefore, the proposed converter has both of the advantages of TBC and IBC. The performance analyses of ITBC, TBC, and IBC have been studied based on simulation and experimental results. From the comparative analysis, it is observed that ITBC is performed better than other two converters. The ripple comparisons between three converters have also been done. Solar energy has been the most popular source of renewable energy for residential and semicommercial applications. Fluctuations of solar energy harvested due to atmospheric conditions can be mitigated through energy storage systems (ESS). Solar energy can also be used to charge electric vehicle batteries to reduce the dependence on the grid. One of the requirements for a converter for such applications is to have a reduced number of conversion stages and provide isolation. The Z-source inverter (ZSI) topology is able to remove multiple stages and achieve voltage boost and dc–ac power conversion in a single stage. The use of passive components also presents an opportunity to integrate ESS into them. This paper presents modeling, design, and operation of a modified ZSI integrated with a split primary isolated battery charger for dc charging of electric vehicle batteries. This paper proposes a multiloop framework for current control of grid-connected voltage source inverters (VSIs) with LCL output filter. The discrete-time model is of third-order with a nonminimum phase zero when controlling the grid side current. This poses some difficulties on the design of most types of controllers. Motivated by this problem, the inner loop is implemented by a discrete-time sliding mode control law to ensure the tracking of the converter side current. This can be achieved regardless the grid impedance and voltage, making the converter to behave like a current source inverter with a capacitive+inductive (CL) filter. Thus, the problem of current control falls from a third-order system to a second-order system. Several types of controllers can be designed to implement the outer loop based on the equivalent CL circuit. In this work, a resonant controller with a virtual resistor was applied.
