DC microgrid has attracted more and more attention due to its unique characteristics, but the development of a dc microgrid is also facing some challenges, such as interruption and isolation of short-circuit fault currents. Therefore, the dc circuit breaker plays an important role in ensuring the normal work of a dc microgrid. In this paper, a novel bidirectional dc solid-state circuit breaker is proposed to realize the bidirectional flow of energy, which ensures the higher operating efficiency of the dc microgrid. Compared with other solid-state circuit breakers, the proposed novel topology has simpler structure, common ground, and fewer components. First, this paper makes a detailed analysis of the different working stages of the circuit when the fault occurs in combination with simulation results of the circuit topology. Then, the standard of selecting the components through the calculation and analysis of the circuit is given in this paper. DC shipboard power systems have been considered as a promising solution for stricter environmental regulations on ships due to their main benefits in fuel savings with variable speed engines and easy integration of energy storage systems. In order to employ the dc solution in the shipboard power systems, the dc power systems have to be protected from a system fault with protection selectivity to minimize impacts of the fault or to avoid other undesirable situations in the system. For low-voltage dc shipboard power systems, a three-level protection has been proposed: 1) fast action (first)—bus separation by solid-state dc bus-tie switch; 2) medium action (second)—feeder protection by high-speed fuse; and 3) slow action (third)—generator–rectifier fault controls. This paper proposes a new method by means of additional bus capacitance added in main dc buses to help reliable operation of the three-level protection. The principle of the proposed method is introduced and the sizing of the additional bus capacitance is addressed in this paper. With the modeling of the dc shipboard power systems, the analyses of voltage drops for the bus separation failure and fault clearing time for the feeder protection are carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method not only mitigates the voltage drop for the bus separation failure, but also achieves the selectivity and the sensitivity for the feeder protection. In this paper, the conventional I- and T-type three-level neutral-point-clamped (3L-NPC) inverter for low-voltage renewable energy systems is first investigated. Literature research shows that the T-type inverter improves I-type's insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) $+$ IGBT current paths. However, the IGBT $+$ diode paths are the same. The calculation in this paper further reveals that the IGBT $+$ diode current paths dominate the conduction losses and even the whole semiconductor losses. Based on the aforementioned recognitions, a novel T-type inverter is presented as an alternative to be applied in the low-voltage renewable energy systems. In the proposed 3L-NPC, four CoolMosfets replace the IGBT $+$ diode middle bidirectional switch. In the proposed topology, there is no diode involved in the current path supposing the unity power factor. Due to different solar radiation, temperature, and other reasons of modules in the three-phase cascaded H-bridge (CHB) photovoltaic (PV) inverter, the output power among PV modules will be unequal and lead to unbalanced grid currents, which cannot meet the requirements of grid codes. On the other hand, the second-order voltage ripple is aroused in the dc-link capacitor since each phase-leg of the CHB inverter is made up of a single-phase inverter. Concerning these two issues, this paper proposes an optimized third harmonic injection method based on fundamental frequency zero sequence injection (FFZSI), which is a conventional method to handle the slight power imbalance problem. In this paper, the FFZSI is adopted to redistribute the power among three phases, and then the third harmonic is injected into the three-phase combined reference waveforms according to the two requirements: all modules are free from overmodulation and the dc-link voltage fluctuation is mostly reduced. Therefore, the proposed method can reduce the dc-link voltage fluctuation and extend the power balance range of FFZSI at the same time. A novel single-phase transformerless dual-mode interleaved multilevel inverter (DMIMI) is proposed in this paper, which can inject a highly sinusoidal ac current to the grid even with the input dc voltage less than the peak grid voltage. Furthermore, dead-beat controllers are developed to directly calculate the optimal duty cycles in a digital control platform. As compared to the traditional dual-mode multilevel approaches, the DMIMI offers high efficiency, less number of components conducting simultaneously in each operation mode, and the capability of reactive power exchange. This paper presents the theoretical analysis and the experimental results obtained from a 1-kW prototype. Metallic joints are created in multivariable gas metal arc welding process by maintaining a balance between the quantum of heat generated and the feeding rate of electrode metal to the weld gap. The wire feeding control is often independently handled. The wire feeder unit should be simple, low cost, and capable of producing accurate speed. Arc welding controllers are often kept in clumsy conditions and the wire feeder unit is located close to the welder, could be much away from the controller. To reduce interconnections, separate sensing element for speed feedback should be avoided. Due to their negligible electrical and mechanical time constant, the pancake-type permanent magnet dc motor is suitable for wire feeding, where sensing of back electromotive force (EMF) for feedback is easy. When high frequency pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controller is used, the sensing of back EMF gets complicated. This paper explores the constraints on the choice of PWM frequency along with its maximum pulsewidth for different types of dc motors. It further elaborates comparatively on the choice of suitable control function for generating accurate speed control of wire feeding using back EMF as feedback. This paper improves the position sensorless drive by sensing actual machine phase voltages. A high-bandwidth phase voltage measurement is developed for pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltage inverters. On the basis, the actual phase voltage is obtained based on the digital integration of PWM voltage using the capture modulator in existing drive microcontrollers (MCU's). Comparing to existing phase voltage measurement, no separated A/D converter and communication hardware are required because PWM pulses are directly measured using MCUs. However, for standard machines without neutral points, only line-to-line ac PWM voltages can be measured for the phase voltage reconstruction. Since the capture based on transistor-transistor logic (TTL) logics receives only digital signals, a preprocess circuit to convert ac PWM line voltages to equivalent digital signals is proposed. This paper clearly explains the voltage sensing hardware using MCU capture modulator. According to experimental results, a 150-MHz sampling rate for phase voltage measurement is achieved based on the proposed capture-based voltage measurement. Although the physical limitation of back electromotive force estimation still appears, the proposed phase voltage measurement substantially enhances the sensorless drive performance at low speed. This paper characterizes the sampling effect in digital sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) of voltage source inverter (VSI). The time-domain analysis presented in this paper establishes the relation between the fundamental frequency, carrier frequency, and the sampling frequency at different modulation indices of the SPWM. The analysis investigates the effect of sampling frequency of the digital controller on the output of the VSI. It is shown that the low-frequency harmonic components appear in the frequency spectrum of the VSI output voltage due to sampling. As a result, the output current of digitally controlled VSI is stepped in nature. The double Fourier integral solution of the switched waveform for inner and outer integral limits has been used to derive the expression. The integral solution is obtained using Jacobi-Anger expansions. The generalized results developed in this paper are useful to investigate the sampling effect in high switching frequency DSPWM. The proposed sampling effect has been analyzed for SPWM of single-phase H-bridge inverter. The analytical results are verified using simulation and experimental results. A space vector modulation (SVM) technique of a dual-inverter system for an open-end winding motor drive is described in this paper, where one inverter has a battery power source and the other has an only capacitor across the dc bus. The SVM must be achieved to operate the motor with field-oriented control and simultaneously to control the capacitor voltage at a constant value by using redundant switching states of the dual-inverter system. The control of the capacitor voltage is carried out by selecting a charging or a discharging mode in each redundant switching state, taking the instantaneous motor power factor into account. In addition, it is also required to reduce the error voltage pulses, which are generated in output multilevel voltage waveforms during the dead time. The compensation method of the existing dead-time scheme and the improved SVM sequence to reduce the error voltage vectors are proposed in this paper. In this paper, a new family of impedance source inverters is presented. It employs high-frequency electrical isolation between the inverter bridge switches and the load along with voltage clamping across the dc-link voltage. Conventional Z-source inverters (ZSIs) employs an impedance network that consists of inductors and capacitors. It has unique features that realize both step-up/step-down functions and eliminates the need of dead/overlap times. This paper extends this novel concept by using electrical isolation in impedance source inverters. High-frequency isolation has many advantages in terms of immunity and reliability; when applied with impedance source inverters this makes ZSIs a preferable choice for industrial applications. In photo-voltaic systems, the addition of the high-frequency transformer provides safety by avoiding the injection of dc circulating current into the grid, without the need of an external bulky line frequency transformer. The gain of the proposed inverter design can be accurately selected by choosing the turns ratio of the high frequency transformer (HFT) or by adjusting the shoot-through duty cycle (STDC) to the inverter. This allows for greater freedom especially when utilizing a higher modulation index, with the STDC allowing dynamic gain adjusts to be done speedily during operation of the inverter. Additionally, a dc-rail voltage clamping technique for the proposed class of isolated ZSIs is also discussed. This technique provides benefits not only in improving the output voltage quality, but also in reducing voltage stress of the active and passive components by minimizing the voltage spikes across the switching devices. In this paper, several high-frequency isolated ZSIs are presented, and an example isolated improved ΓZSI design is shown and discussed in detail. Simulations are provided for the proposed class of isolated inverters to verify their working. Further experimental investigation has been done for which results for the isolated improved ΓZSI are reported. In this paper, a single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) dc–dc converter is proposed. The significant feature of the proposed converter is feeding a constant power load in low-voltage side (LVS) port, where even feeding a variable load at LVS does not have any cross regulation to high-voltage side port with the desired approximation. Magnificently, both merits are obtained in open-loop manner, which is an outstanding characteristic in comparison with that of the existed converters. In this paper, soft commutation and soft switching of switches and diodes are investigated along with the aforementioned main novelty. Moreover, detailed theoretical analyses of the proposed SIDO dc–dc converter in continuous conduction mode are presented besides the comparisons with some other structures. In this paper, a series-capacitor-based interleaving buck power factor correction (PFC) converter is proposed, the intermediate energy storage capacitance of which is operated at discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM), and automatic power factor (PF) correction for this converter is obtained. Moreover, the voltage across the series capacitor of the proposed PFC converter is clamped at the input voltage, and thus peak voltage stress existed in the traditional DCVM buck PFC could be relieved. By effectively regulating the charge/discharge time for the series capacitor, ultrahigh step-down conversion ratio of the proposed converter is achieved, the conversion ratio of which is independent of the duty cycle and only related to the switching frequency and circuit parameters. Therefore, high PF can be obtained due to very narrow deadtime of the input current. Meanwhile, the proposed PFC converter can realize the soft turn-on of part power switch and soft turn-off of part power diodes. In addition, comparing with the traditional discontinuous inductor current mode PFC, the input current of the proposed PFC converter is continuous so that the peak value and root-mean-square value of input current can be reduced. The operational principle, performance analysis, and parameter design principle are given in this paper. The analysis results show that the PF and total harmonic distortion are also independent of the duty cycle. This paper presents a novel method to estimate the number of shorted turns in a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) following the detection of interturn short-circuit (ITSC) fault and its location. In this proposed method, PMSM is excited through a low sinusoidal voltage at standstill condition to obtain the winding resistance and synchronous inductance by current response. It is shown that the ITSC fault introduces variation in the current response, which can be used to calculate the number of shorted turns under zero fault resistance assumption. Using this practical procedure, the fault severity can be estimated directly in a straight-forward manner. In other words, the severity estimation for a given machine can be done without complex machine modeling or experiments on ITSC prototype with multiple taps. The findings in this paper are essential for a comprehensive solution including fault mitigation algorithms and postfault operations. In order to verify the findings, a three-phase equivalent circuit model supported by finite element analysis results is used to take saturation and space harmonics into account. This paper proposes an “isolated soft switching current fed LCC-T resonant dc–dc converter for PV/fuel cell applications.” This converter is able to achieve zero voltage switching for front-end inverter switches and zero-current switching for voltage doubler diodes. The majority of dc–dc converters have compact capacitive (C) filter in output, but high harmonic currents through transformer makes them bulky. The proposed converter attempts to improve harmonic content through a transformer under wide load and input variations as well as it can significantly reduce required turns ratio of transformer to achieve required output voltage. For the above reasons, the proposed converter can offer better footprints and therefore it can be a potential candidate for PV/fuel cell applications. This paper presents basic operating principal, detailed analysis, control, and design of the proposed converter with the help of an example. The aim of this paper is to study the dynamics of a permanent magnet direct current (PMDC) brushed motor while two crucial space-domain effects, namely, slotting effect and commutation phenomenon are taken into account. Semi-analytical dynamic time-domain PMDC brushed motor model inclusive of these space-domain effects is used to analyze and investigate the dynamics. Pulse width modulation operated discontinuous current PMDC brushed motor drive with steady duty cycle is employed to acquire the bifurcation patterns. The chaotic nature due to slotting effect and commutation is identified from the bifurcation patterns and reported. It also has to be admired that such nonlinear dynamical behavior with the same set of parameters at similar operating condition has not been observed when a conventional PMDC brushed motor dynamic model is considered. These space-domain effects, namely, slotting effect and commutation also have a prominent impact to make some time-domain states of a PMDC brushed motor drive chaotic. The role of slotting effect and commutation phenomenon to analyze the chaos over time-domain state variables of the PMDC brushed motor drive is investigated and validated experimentally in this paper. SiC mosfet based converters are capable of high switching frequency operation. In this paper, the converter is operated with 50-kHz switching frequency for an active front-end rectifier application. Due to high switching frequency, the grid-side filter size is reduced, and the possibility of a high bandwidth current control loop is utilized in this paper. A current control loop with bandwidth of 5 kHz is designed using a proportional–integral controller in synchronously rotating dq-reference frame. In addition, the performance of the controller is tested under unbalanced input supply conditions. During this condition, new feed-forward signals, which are added to the controller output, are proposed. The gain of the feed-forward signal can be modified to achieve balanced sinusoidal grid currents, constant dc-link voltage, or a controlled negative-sequence input current, which are typical application-depending requirements. A closed-form formula to calculate the gain of the feed-forward signal to achieve the above-mentioned requirements is also proposed in this paper. Due to its capacity to store or supply energy with high power, the supercapacitor is becoming an attractive component. Because of the electrostatic nature of energy storage, the endurance of this component toward repetitive charge and discharge cycles is relatively high. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that cycling has an impact on the degradation of the supercapacitor and, as a result, on its lifetime. Based on accelerated cycling tests, some supercapacitors were studied using a dedicated test bench. Temperature, voltage, and current, which are the parameters that accelerate aging, are monitored. In fact, observations during the cycling tests show an important acceleration in the degradation compared with a similar static test having the same voltage and core temperature but without cycling. This paper presents a rotor speed observer for induction-machine drives based on a sliding-mode approach and magnetizing current estimation. The back electromotive force (EMF) is calculated from the stator current and the stator voltage signals. The magnetizing currents are obtained from the back EMF. A theorem which gives the rotor speed estimate in the continuous-time domain is formulated using the magnetizing current estimation. The stability analysis is achieved based on the Lyapunov approach. Moreover, the discrete-time approach of the method is discussed, and a theorem for the discrete-time implementation is proposed. The limits that ensure the system stability for the switching gains and for the observer gain are discussed. This paper shows that the limits for the gains of the discrete-time algorithm are different from the limits for the gains of the continuous-time algorithm. Simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical analysis. This paper proposes a visible light communication (VLC) system consisting of a single-stage buck–boost power factor correction converter operating in the discontinuous conduction mode with dimming capability. Additionally, this paper proposes the on–off M-frequency shift keying modulation for the VLC system. This modulation allows for the transmission of more than a single bit for each switching period without affecting the dimming characteristics of the light-emitting diode luminaire. The design of the whole system is discussed in detail, including both transmitter and receiver modules. A 20-W laboratory prototype was built in order to verify the proposed modulation scheme. The experimental evaluation showed a good performance of the transmitter, which was able to perform simultaneously the desired functions, namely power factor correction, dimming, and data transmission. The receiver also achieved the desired performance with a low bit error rate (BER). The results showed that the proposed system was able to transfer data between emitter and receiver with a bit rate of 1.11 Mb/s at a frequency of up to 375 kHz over a distance of 10 m, and with a BER lower than $10^{-3}$ under the influence of external lighting sources with illuminance levels up to 500 lx. To reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV) and eliminate the CMV spikes for two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSIs), an improved model predictive control (MPC) based CMV reduction method is proposed in this paper considering dead-time effects. First, an improved voltage vector (VV) preselection strategy is proposed to reduce the CMV spikes caused by the dead time. Second, a new hybrid VV preselection strategy based on a delay compensation strategy and a modified current sector division strategy is proposed to completely eliminate the CMV spikes. As the proposed hybrid VV preselection based MPC strategy makes full use of the six nonzero VVs of the 2L-VSI, the current total harmonic distortions and ripples are reduced. This paper presents a novel sensorless startup strategy for a 315-kW high-speed magnetic suspension brushless dc (BLDC) motor with small inductance and nonideal back electromotive force (EMF). Two key strategies on the sensorless startup strategy of the BLDC motor are presented: First, small current startup strategy for the high-speed BLDC motor with small inductance; and second, self-adaption control strategy to compensate the commutation error for the BLDC motor with nonideal back EMF in the startup stage. A hybrid pulsewidth modulation strategy based on the load torque is proposed to limit the startup current. An optimal motor startup curve based on the system parameters is presented, and a self-adaption control strategy is proposed to solve the synchronous switching problem. In this paper, an improved postfault strategy is introduced for modular multilevel converters, which utilizes the remaining healthy capacity of the converter more efficiently and increases the line voltage amplitude under these circumstances. Previous works proposed to use the neutral point shift in ac side and dc side of the converter simultaneously. This paper adds a comprehensive and coherent formulation, deep analyzation, and experimental validation. The main improvement of the proposed method is maximizing the line voltage amplitude using the optimum dc component and the best neutral point position. Indeed, fewer restrictions in fault numbers, fewer restrictions in load power factor, and fewer nonsolution conditions are among other improvements of a combined dc and neutral-shift method. Islanded grids operate isolated from the main grid and they allow the use of ac with a different frequency from the main grid. In this paper, it is proposed to use more than one frequency at the same time in such autonomous systems. The grid voltage amplitude at the fundamental frequency can be increased while the voltage peak is constant by adding odd harmonics to the voltage waveform. The grid currents and the power converter currents are decreased for the same power level, which leads to reduced losses in the system. The currents can be minimized if waveform shaping is additionally applied to the current waveforms. The approach also offers the possibility of mitigating the influence of low power factor in single-phase systems. In this paper, a cascaded H-Bridge (CHB)-multilevel converter (MC)-based photovoltaic (PV) system with no voltage or current sensors at the dc-side is proposed. Eliminating the dc-side sensors simplifies the hardware, leading to lower cost and higher reliability of the PV system. A novel scheme estimating the capacitors’ voltages from the ac output voltage of the inverter is developed. The scheme allows replacing all dc-side voltage sensors by a single-voltage sensor at the ac-side of the converter. Furthermore, the dc current sensors, conventionally required for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), are also eliminated. Instead, the outputs from the capacitors’ voltage control systems are utilized for the MPPT. Conventional back-electromotive force (EMF) and flux linkage-based indirect rotor position detection methods have limitations, specifically poor position accuracy and inability to operate at low as well as at high speed. However, practical motor drives require precise operation over a wide speed range, which widens the application areas while increasing reliability compared to direct position sensor-based drives. The method proposed and demonstrated in this paper uses only terminal voltage measurements to estimate the flux linkage increment in six separate sectors of an electrical cycle. This is used to determine the rotor position while avoiding the accumulated position error that is a characteristic of flux linkage-based techniques. This paper also addresses the common problems associated with the practical implementations, such as low-pass filter delay, integrator offset error, and noise sensitivity at low speed. The theoretical explanation of the method has been given in detail and analytical solutions for the flux linkage threshold of both sinusoidal and trapezoidal permanent-magnet (PM) machines is provided, avoiding trial and error tuning commonly utilized in the literature. This paper proposes a hybrid static synchronous compensator (hybrid-STATCOM) in a three-phase power transmission system that has a wide compensation range and low dc-link voltage. Because of these prominent characteristics, the system costs can be greatly reduced. In this paper, the circuit configuration of hybrid-STATCOM is introduced first. Its V–I characteristic is then analyzed, discussed, and compared with traditional STATCOM and capacitive-coupled STATCOM (C-STATCOM). The system parameter design is then proposed on the basis of consideration of the reactive power compensation range and avoidance of the potential resonance problem. After that, a control strategy for hybrid-STATCOM is proposed to allow operation under different voltage and current conditions, such as unbalanced current, voltage dip, and voltage fault. Finally, simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the wide compensation range and low dc-link voltage characteristics and the good dynamic performance of the proposed hybrid-STATCOM. This paper presents the implementation and the experimental validation of the speed controller, without position measurement, of an active way linear synchronous motor with multiphase independent supply. The proposed method is based on the back electromotive force estimation. The main drawback of this strategy is that it does not work at standstill. This paper also presents a second contactless method that, by making use of Hall sensors, allows starting the glider from standstill. The purpose of this paper is to comment on the reference voltage tracking ability of a recently proposed state observer based adaptive sliding mode control for boost converters. It is shown that the control in the cited paper cannot track the reference voltage. A modified control law that enables reference voltage tracking while preserving the other advantages of the commented paper is proposed and validated by simulation and experimentation on laboratory hardware. Essential imbalance and fluctuation of the mobile train load draw some problems, e.g., three-phase unbalance, reactive power, voltage and load fluctuation, harmonics, etc. in both public and train supply networks (TSNs). Railway power flow controller (RPFC)'s good performance on dealing with those problems has been convinced in practice these years. However, as the primary task in commercialization, how to qualitatively determine RPFC's design capacity with high cost efficiency and how to comprehensively assess its performance in the design stage have perplexed engineers for many years. To solve those problems in both planning and real-time executing processes, this paper focuses on an RPFC design capacity optimization strategy for grid-connection compatibility and operating performance improvement in terms of both the utility and the TSN. The strategy not only makes a railway substation satisfy the grid-connection standards with high calculating efficiency, but also renders the RPFC to have the minimum design capacity, the excellent feeder voltage control ability, the good fixed capacitor installing prospect, and the high operating efficiency on the targets of reducing the investment and enhancing the transportation ability. The generic models, the industry-oriented design and the quantitative analysis, discussed in this paper give an insight for those concerned based on a balance transformer. In this paper, the model predictive current control is introduced in the semicontrolled open-winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OW-PMSM) generation system with a common dc bus to suppress the zero-sequence current for the first time. Particularly, the basic voltage vectors of the semicontrolled OW-PMSM, which are synthesized by the three-phase full-controlled converter and the three-phase uncontrollable diode bridge, is analyzed and their influences on the zero-sequence current are investigated for the first time in this paper. Then the current-error-based cost function that includes dq-axis current error and zero-sequence current error is designed to evaluate all the voltage vectors. Moreover, to further improve the steady-state control performance of the whole generation system, a zero-sequence current suppression method based on the uncontrollable side voltage vector adjustment, which has the advantage of low computation burden, is developed. In this method, two voltage vectors of the controllable converter are applied during one control period. Based on the distribution character of the basic voltage vector in the semicontrollable OW-PMSM generation system, the first voltage vector is selected according to the three-phase current direction to adjust equivalent vector of the uncontrollable diode bridge, whereas for the second voltage vector, the selection method based deadbeat voltage vector sector is designed to reduce the range of the candidate voltage vector. This paper presents a uniform control strategy for the bidirectional ac/dc interlinking converter (BIC) in hierarchical controlled hybrid microgrid. The uniform control strategy unifies different control structures for multifunctional BIC in terms of power management, ac and dc voltage support. With the unified control structure, various triggering mechanisms for BIC mode-switch are not compulsory in response to the relevant scenario changes in the power network. Therefore, the negative consequences, such as unsmooth transition and system collapse due to the inaccurate or slower mode switch, can be avoided. Moreover, the uniform control strategy is also applicable for the hierarchical controlled hybrid microgrid, whose control architecture is typically comprised of the centralized and decentralized levels. This enables the communication fault ride-through capability and the impact from the communication failures can thus be mitigated. To sum up the above two features, the proposed control strategy is able to provide a smooth operation for the BIC without control mode switch in the event of unintentional scenario changes in power or communication network. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. This paper proposes a novel fuzzified mechanical sensorless speed estimation technique for permanent magnet direct current (PMDC) brushed motor operated with pulse width modulation (PWM) based terminal voltage. For replacement of conventional mechanical speed sensors, few mechanical sensorless speed estimation techniques have been reported recently in the field of PMDC brushed motor. In this paper, a novel technique is applied over a recently reported semianalytical dynamic time-domain PMDC brushed motor model incorporating space-domain effects, namely slotting effect and commutation phenomenon to simulate the proposed estimation process. Ripple and back electromotive force based standalone estimation approaches are hybridized in order to eliminate uncertainties in all regions of estimation. In this paper, a discrete fuzzified hybrid speed estimation model has been proposed with adequate dynamic simulation responses. Further the proposed discrete speed estimation model has been applied experimentally over a PWM-driven 24-V, 12-teeth, 100-W PMDC brushed motor and various dynamic real-time responses have been compared with conventionally captured speed samples to validate the proposed model. Microinverters require high voltage gain capability for interfacing the low dc voltage output of photovoltaic (PV) module to single-phase ac grid. A two-stage nonisolated inverter is proposed in this paper, with a first boost stage and a second traditional pulse width modulated grid-tied inverter stage. The proposed boost stage consists of a coupled inductor added with a voltage multiplier to achieve the required high voltage gain at high efficiency and to operate over a wide input voltage range. Among the coupled inductor topologies, adding a clamp circuit is a common solution to limit the voltage spike caused by leakage inductance. In the proposed converter, the resonance between the coupled inductor and voltage multiplier is used to address the issue of voltage spike, thereby reducing both component count and device voltage stress. In this paper, the lifetime prediction of power device modules based on the linear damage accumulation is studied in conjunction with simple mission profiles of converters. Superimposed power cycling conditions, which are called simple mission profiles in this paper, are made based on a lifetime model in respect to junction temperature swing duration. This model has been built based on 39 power cycling test results of 600-V 30-A three-phase-molded IGBT modules. Six tests are performed under three superimposed power cycling conditions using an advanced power cycling test setup. The experimental results validate the lifetime prediction of the IGBT modules based on the linear damage accumulation by comparing the test results with the predicted lifetime from the lifetime model. Furthermore, the test results show the importance of the junction temperature swing duration effect for the lifetime prediction of IGBT modules under power converter applications. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. The nine-switch converter is a multiport converter having two three-phase terminals and a dc-link, just like a 12-switch back-to-back (BTB) converter, but with 25% reduction of active switch count. However, the reduction from 12-switch to 9-switch may not always be an efficient choice considering losses in the switches. Only the load–source combination for the ac–ac common frequency mode and the source–source combination for the ac–dc different frequency (ac–dc DF) mode have been reported, so far, to yield relatively lower loss for the nine-switch converter. This paper shows that the nine-switch converter can have relatively lower loss even with a load–source combination, instead of only source–source combination in its ac–dc DF mode—when the upper terminal is connected to a dc load and the lower terminal is connected to an ac source. Mathematical proof is presented with derivation of the particular operating parameters for which the nine-switch converter will have comparatively lower losses. The analysis is validated with simulation and experimental results of a 1-kW system. For power converters with inductive loads, a freewheeling path is needed for the current due to reactive power. The MOSFET synchronous rectification (SR) is widely used to reduce the conduction loss during the freewheeling period. Due to the wide band gap of silicon carbide (SiC), the intrinsic body diode of SiC MOSFET exhibits a high voltage drop. Hence, an antiparallel SiC Schottky diode is normally implemented to eliminate its conduction. However, the external SiC Schottky diode is not fully utilized as it only works during the dead time. In this paper, the hard-switching SR is investigated in an SiC three-phase inverter and compared with a conventional inverter using freewheeling diode (FWD). An improved power loss model for the two inverters has been developed. It is found that the inverter using SR has higher efficiency due to the smaller switching loss. A 7-kW prototype of SiC three-phase inverter is built, which achieves a peak efficiency of 98.8% ($\pm$ 0.15%) and 98.5% ($\pm$ 0.15%) at 40 kHz using SR and FWD, respectively. This paper proposes a wide-range zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) active-clamped current-fed push–pull converter for fuel cell application. The presented converter achieves ZVS for all of the primary switches and ZCS for secondary diodes from rated load to 10% full load over the wide input voltage variation, improving the overall efficiency. The ZVS of switches is realized by the energy stored in the transformer leakage inductance aided by the secondary parallel inductor. An additional active clamping circuit suppresses the voltage spike as well as assists in realizing ZVS of switches. Low-voltage-rated switches with low on-state resistance can be used. Moreover, the voltage-doubler rectifier is adopted to release the reverse-recovery problem of rectifier diodes and reduce turns ratio of the high-frequency transformer. This paper presents a concept to improve the dynamic response, efficiency, productivity, and fuel consumption of hydraulic mining shovels (HMSs) using a high power energy storage system to supplement the existing diesel-powered generators. A 2.25-MW ultracapacitor system is applied to improve the sluggish dynamic response of the diesel engine during sudden load changes and to limit the engine power requirements by maintaining an optimal engine speed. When the load rate of change increases above a specified rate limit, the ultracapacitor system supplements power to support loads in order to limit the power ramp rate for the generator. In addition to the engine dynamic improvement, the ultracapacitor system supports the engine during peak power demand, allowing for a smaller engine size for the machine, which results in higher fuel savings and less exhaust emissions. An interleaved bidirectional dc/dc converter is designed to interface between the ultracapacitor bank and main dc bus. Sophisticated multilayer control strategies are designed, implemented, and applied to the system to perform complete machine power management while keeping the dc bus voltage stable. A high-voltage tapped-inductor buck converter utilizing a novel autonomous high-voltage valve is presented in this paper. Its application as auxiliary power supply for high-power cascaded-converter submodules is discussed, followed by a presentation of the most challenging problems in designing a low-power high-voltage step-down converter. The TI-buck converter topology is analyzed, which together with the novel autonomous high-voltage valve overcomes most of the problems. Analytical expressions describing the operation as well as circuit simulations are presented. This paper deals with improving the voltage quality of sensitive loads from voltage sags using a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). The higher active power requirement associated with voltage phase jump compensation has caused a substantial rise in size and cost of the dc link energy storage system of DVR. The existing control strategies either mitigate the phase jump or improve the utilization of dc link energy by the following: 1) reducing the amplitude of the injected voltage or 2) optimizing the dc bus energy support. In this paper, an enhanced sag compensation strategy is proposed, which mitigates the phase jump in the load voltage while improving the overall sag compensation time. An analytical study shows that the proposed method significantly increases the DVR sag support time (more than 50%) compared with the existing phase jump compensation methods. This enhancement can also be seen as a considerable reduction in dc link capacitor size for new installation. This paper proposes a novel architecture for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) dc charging station at the megawatt level, through the use of a grid-tied neutral point clamped (NPC) converter. The proposed bipolar dc structure reduces the step-down effort on the dc–dc fast chargers. In addition, this paper proposes a balancing mechanism that allows handling any difference on the dc loads while keeping the midpoint voltage accurately regulated. By formally defining the unbalance operation limit, the proposed control scheme is able to provide complementary balancing capabilities by the use of an additional NPC leg acting as a bidirectional dc–dc stage, simulating the minimal load condition and allowing the modulator to keep the control on the dc voltages under any load scenario. In this paper, a novel transformerless interleaved high step-down conversion ratio dc–dc converter with low switch voltage stress is proposed. In the proposed converter, two input capacitors are series-charged by the input voltage and parallel-discharged by a new two-phase interleaved buck converter for providing a much higher step-down conversion ratio without adopting an extreme short duty cycle. Based on the capacitive voltage division, the main objectives of the new voltage-divider circuit in the converter are for both storing energy in the blocking capacitors for increasing the step-down conversion ratio and reducing voltage stresses of active switches. As a result, the proposed converter topology possesses the low switch voltage stress characteristic. This will allow one to choose lower voltage rating MOSFETs to reduce both switching and conduction losses, and the overall efficiency is consequently improved. Moreover, due to the charge balance of the blocking capacitor, the converter features automatic uniform current sharing characteristic of the interleaved phases without adding extra circuitry or complex control methods. Inverter nonlinearity and sampling current dc bias can cause harmonic distortion of estimated back electromotive forces (EMFs), and therefore results in position estimation error and degrades control performance of model-based sensorless techniques of permanent-magnet synchronous motors, especially in low speed region. In this paper, the effects of inverter nonlinearity and sampling current dc bias on back EMF estimation are analyzed. A voltage feedforward compensation method based on an iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm is proposed and it is used to eliminate the harmonics of estimated back EMFs and position estimation error, so as to improve the performance of sensorless control. Compensated voltages at different rotor positions are calculated online by the ILC algorithm and stored in a lookup table. The method does not depend on current polarity and inverter model. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been one of the most popular candidates in high-voltage applications. However, reliability is a critical issue due to a large number of power switching devices and capacitors applied in the MMC. To improve the reliability of the MMC, a fast and reliable diagnosis strategy for the open-circuit fault is proposed in this paper, where submodule voltage sensors are relocated to the upper switching device. Furthermore, a voltage observer based on the submodule voltage sensor is established to monitor the capacitor and realize the power control of the MMC under normal operation. A Boolean logic operation based fault indicator is put forward based on the relationship of the operation state and binaried output of voltage sensors, which could detect and locate the open-circuit faults of the MMC very fast. The ratio of the increment of the observed and measured capacitor voltage during the period of positive arm current is applied to monitor the capacitor. In the design of high-speed permanent magnet machines (HSPMMs), comprehensive effects of design parameters on the various properties of electromagnetic loss, rotor stress, rotor critical speed, and temperature distribution must be analyzed to obtain the optimal design. The aim of this paper is to examine the effects of design parameters, such as the pole number, stator slots number, number of conductors per slot, permanent magnet (PM) thickness, PM pole arc coefficient, air gap length, rotor diameter, core length, and sleeve thickness, on multiphysics performance based on a high-power HSPMM. A reasonable design is determined according to the abovementioned analysis that satisfies all specified multiphysics constraints. The theoretical results are confirmed by the experimental results on a prototype in terms of electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal characteristics such as back electromotive force, no-load loss, full-load current, overspeed experiment, and temperature distribution. Partial discharge (PD) detection is a fundamental tool for the design and diagnosis of insulation systems, particularly organic materials that must operate throughout their life without PD. While the methods for PD measurements under sinusoidal supply voltage are well-established, the same does not hold under repetitive-pulse voltage waveforms, such as those provided by inverters. Electromagnetic noise generated by electronic switch commutation in inverters can overlap with PD pulses, making it difficult to measure, separate from noise, and identify PD. This is particularly more cumbersome when fast rise-time switches are employed. To address these issues, this paper investigates methods to detect PD pulses on enameled wires under repetitive impulsive voltages with different rise times of 60, 500, and 1000 ns, proposing techniques which allow separation of PD from noise even when they overlap in time and frequency domains. This paper employs a time-domain approach using standard deviation curve acquired from a set of measurements to discriminate PD from repetitive commutation disturbance. These techniques can be implemented to achieve unsupervised noise rejection, which would be an important goal for both offline and online PD testing. The widespread application of nonlinear power electronic devices in residential loads has resulted in significant harmonic distortions. Harmonic source modeling is of great importance since it is a prerequisite to estimate the harmonic pollution. In this paper, a dynamic harmonic coupled matrix model (HCMM) is proposed for the nonlinear home appliances. This model is adaptive to the load supply voltage conditions; therefore, the dynamic harmonic generating characteristics of nonlinear home appliances can be demonstrated by the proposed HCMM. Moreover, the HCMM derivation process is based on measurement, independent of the load equivalent circuit, which makes the proposed method most suitable for nonlinear home appliances with unknown circuit topologies. The widely linear complex partial least squares method, which has a fast speed and high robustness, is used to estimate the HCMM. A procedure to establish the HCMM for multistate home appliances is also proposed in this paper. Lab experiments were performed to verify the accuracy and validity of the proposed methodology. A new continuous conduction mode (CCM)/discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) hybrid-mode synchronous rectification (SR) flyback converter is proposed in this paper. This converter is realized by adding a combined switch in parallel with the auxiliary winding of the flyback transformer. The added switch is controlled to conduct a short period before the primary switch turns on, which shorts the windings of the transformer. The drain-source voltage of SR arises rapidly to reach the turn-off threshold voltage inside SR controller and the SR is turned off before the primary switch conducts. In this way, the overlapped period existed in a conventional CCM SR flyback converter is eliminated. Meanwhile, the normal operation of SR flyback in DCM is not affected. Detailed theoretical analysis has been presented and verified by a $12\,\text{V}/ 2.5\,\text{A}$ CCM/DCM hybrid-mode flyback experimental prototype.
