The fourteen papers in this special section focus on high performance light emitting diode (LED) drivers. In recent years, as the fourth generation of light source, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been widely used in many applications such as street lighting, automotive, and residential lighting because of their long lifetime, low maintenance requirement, and environment friendliness. As the performance of LEDs will be influenced obviously by the drivers, researchers have shown a growing interest in optimizing the drivers. Although these problems such as current balancing, eliminating electrolytic capacitor, and improving the topologies are not new, the high-frequency high-efficiency trend of LED drivers has given rise to additional challenges. This paper suggests a cascade output voltage regulation strategy for dc/dc boost converters that embeds a robust inner-loop current controller against parameter variations. The contributions of this paper are divided into two parts. The first contribution is to present a simple and robust inner-loop current controller despite parameter uncertainties, guaranteeing the stability of the whole closed-loop system including the first-order internal dynamics. The second contribution is to show that an outer-loop proportional–integral regulator can stabilize the output voltage error without relying on any parameter information. Simulations and experiments using a 3-kW dc/dc boost converter showed that the proposed method offers satisfactory closed-loop performance in the presence of parameter uncertainties. Soft-switching techniques of transformerless photovoltaic grid-connected inverters (TLIs) can significantly reduce switching losses, as well as soften switching processes. Conventional dc–ac soft-switching configurations proposed by Dr. Deepakraj M. Divan are invalid in TLIs because of the leakage current problem. In order to develop soft-switching techniques in TLIs, this paper proposes a new soft-switching configuration and a procedure to guide the invention of soft-switching TLIs. First, this paper proposes two basic resonance tanks related to dc bus polarities, and then, uses these basic tanks to elevate four popular full-bridge-type TLIs according to the proposed guideline. As a result, four soft-switching TLIs are gained. Second, this paper picks obtained soft-switching highly efficient and reliable inverter concept (HERIC) as example to analyze its soft-switching operation principle and performance. As a consequence, all active switches of the gained soft-switching HERIC circuit are switched under both of zero-current turn-on and turn-off conditions; the reverse recovery problem of freewheeling diodes is alleviated owing to the zero-current turn-off of diodes; meanwhile, the common-mode voltage at the switching frequency scale is still constant. Finally, some experimental results from a 3-kW universal prototype at 50-kHz switching frequency are provided to verify the effectiveness of the main contributions of this paper. In the paper by Jin et al. (IEEE Trans. Ind. Electron., vol. 62, no. 3, pp. 1363–1371, Mar. 2015), the authors present an expansion of Ohm's law in the nonsinusoidal ac circuit, based on which a distinct instruction for analyzing and designing nonsinusoidal circuit including ac/dc link circuit is provided. Recently, the world's first ever power electronic traction transformer (PETT) for a 15-kV 16.7-Hz railway grid has been newly developed, commissioned, and installed on the test locomotive, where the PETT is presently in use. The design and development of the PETT are described in two parts of this paper. The details related to the 1.2-MVA medium voltage (MV) PETT prototype, including the electrical design of the power circuit, the sizing and characterization of insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) devices, the design of the medium-frequency transformer, the cooling system design, insulation coordination, and protection, are presented in this part, while the preceding paper deals with the overall system requirements and control system design based on the low-voltage (LV) PETT prototype. The identical control hardware and software from the LV PETT prototype were used for the MV PETT prototype, thus reducing significantly commissioning time. In this paper, the design methodology of switched-tank converter (STC) is presented. The power loss breakdown analysis is conducted to point out the directions and paths for components optimization. It is revealed that the switching device conduction loss, printed circuit board (PCB) loss, and inductor loss become significant when output power is >150 W. Power loss of four switches is calculated and compared for switching device selection. The resonant capacitor is carefully designed to meet both current stress and ripple requirements. On the other hand, optimal design of the resonant inductors and PCB layout are fully investigated. The core loss model is provided, and different core materials are compared to minimize the core loss. Besides, a fine-tuned inductor winding structure is designed to achieve the lowest winding loss. Furthermore, PCB layout is optimized to get short loop length for each operation state. In addition to the hardware level optimization, an improved control method is proposed, in which the conduction time of switching devices is tuned to mitigate the circulating power. To verify the optimization work, a prototype of STC is built and tested. This paper presents the development of a Class-D full-bridge zero-voltage switching (ZVS) inverter, applicable to wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, operating at 13.56 MHz switching frequency with dynamic dead-time control (DDTC). Resonant-coupled WPT systems are being designed at ultrahigh switching frequencies to reduce the size of the wireless link and the passive components. Maintaining ZVS while controlling the output power delivered to a fixed or variable load is one of the major challenges of designing inverters at multi-MHz switching frequencies. DDTC is the approach deployed in this paper to sustain soft switching of a Class-D full-bridge inverter over the full range of output power while regulating the input dc bus voltage. Simulation results are presented to show that dynamically controlling the dead-time during input dc bus voltage variations reduces switch-node voltage overshoot, prevents large current spikes in the switching devices, and reduces associated high switching loss. Practical results obtained show that DDTC reduces switch-node voltage overshoot, increases the inverter efficiency, and reduces the steady-state temperature of the inverter during output power regulation. This paper proposes a new isolated single-stage single-switch power-factor-correction (S4 PFC) driver for supplying light-emitting diodes (LEDs) without electrolytic capacitor. In the proposed LED driver, the switch turns on under zero current switching (ZCS) condition. Also, it turns on at a voltage less than its nominal voltage stress, and therefore, the switch capacitive turn-on loss decreases too much extent. The leakage energy is absorbed, so there are no voltage spikes across the switch when the switch turns off. In this paper, operating principles of the proposed driver are discussed, and design considerations are presented. Also, a laboratory prototype for supplying a 21 W/30 V LED module from 220 Vrms/50\,\rm Hz ac mains is implemented, and experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis. This paper presents a novel integrated-stage light-emitting diode (LED) driver based on Flyback and resonant converters. The Flyback converter realizes power factor correction in the discontinuous conduction mode. The resonant converter is operated as a dc–dc converter to support the LED loads. Moreover, the resonant converter can clearly decrease the drain–source voltage of the active switch and exhibits zero-voltage-switch characteristics. Therefore, a cost-effective MOSFET can be chosen as the main control component that can decrease the cost of the whole system. Compared to a single-active-switch converter (such as Class-E converter), the number of passive components in the resonant converter can be limited to four. Therefore, the power density of the system can be improved drastically. In this paper, a new family of impedance source inverters is presented. It employs high-frequency electrical isolation between the inverter bridge switches and the load along with voltage clamping across the dc-link voltage. Conventional Z-source inverters (ZSIs) employs an impedance network that consists of inductors and capacitors. It has unique features that realize both step-up/step-down functions and eliminates the need of dead/overlap times. This paper extends this novel concept by using electrical isolation in impedance source inverters. High-frequency isolation has many advantages in terms of immunity and reliability; when applied with impedance source inverters this makes ZSIs a preferable choice for industrial applications. In photo-voltaic systems, the addition of the high-frequency transformer provides safety by avoiding the injection of dc circulating current into the grid, without the need of an external bulky line frequency transformer. The gain of the proposed inverter design can be accurately selected by choosing the turns ratio of the high frequency transformer (HFT) or by adjusting the shoot-through duty cycle (STDC) to the inverter. This allows for greater freedom especially when utilizing a higher modulation index, with the STDC allowing dynamic gain adjusts to be done speedily during operation of the inverter. Additionally, a dc-rail voltage clamping technique for the proposed class of isolated ZSIs is also discussed. This technique provides benefits not only in improving the output voltage quality, but also in reducing voltage stress of the active and passive components by minimizing the voltage spikes across the switching devices. In this paper, several high-frequency isolated ZSIs are presented, and an example isolated improved ΓZSI design is shown and discussed in detail. Simulations are provided for the proposed class of isolated inverters to verify their working. Further experimental investigation has been done for which results for the isolated improved ΓZSI are reported. In this paper, a series-capacitor-based interleaving buck power factor correction (PFC) converter is proposed, the intermediate energy storage capacitance of which is operated at discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM), and automatic power factor (PF) correction for this converter is obtained. Moreover, the voltage across the series capacitor of the proposed PFC converter is clamped at the input voltage, and thus peak voltage stress existed in the traditional DCVM buck PFC could be relieved. By effectively regulating the charge/discharge time for the series capacitor, ultrahigh step-down conversion ratio of the proposed converter is achieved, the conversion ratio of which is independent of the duty cycle and only related to the switching frequency and circuit parameters. Therefore, high PF can be obtained due to very narrow deadtime of the input current. Meanwhile, the proposed PFC converter can realize the soft turn-on of part power switch and soft turn-off of part power diodes. In addition, comparing with the traditional discontinuous inductor current mode PFC, the input current of the proposed PFC converter is continuous so that the peak value and root-mean-square value of input current can be reduced. The operational principle, performance analysis, and parameter design principle are given in this paper. The analysis results show that the PF and total harmonic distortion are also independent of the duty cycle. This paper proposes an “isolated soft switching current fed LCC-T resonant dc–dc converter for PV/fuel cell applications.” This converter is able to achieve zero voltage switching for front-end inverter switches and zero-current switching for voltage doubler diodes. The majority of dc–dc converters have compact capacitive (C) filter in output, but high harmonic currents through transformer makes them bulky. The proposed converter attempts to improve harmonic content through a transformer under wide load and input variations as well as it can significantly reduce required turns ratio of transformer to achieve required output voltage. For the above reasons, the proposed converter can offer better footprints and therefore it can be a potential candidate for PV/fuel cell applications. This paper presents basic operating principal, detailed analysis, control, and design of the proposed converter with the help of an example. This converter operates in two modes, i.e., constant duty cycle mode and constant frequency mode, depending on load demand, and is explained through operating curves. A hybrid switched-capacitor/interleaved boost converter able to provide a high voltage gain and to cancel the input current ripple at a preselected duty cycle was recently presented in the literature. This paper extends that work by proposing an optimized switching strategy for operating conditions at other values of duty cycle. The switching strategy effect on the converter's voltage gain and input current ripple is quantified and compared against the performance under the conventional switching strategy. The phasor-PWM-based current source inverter (CSI) is a boost inverter. The difference between conventional CSIs and the boost inverter is that the boost ratio (VLLrms/Vdc ) in the boost inverter can easily be above 3.0, whereas this ratio is around 1 in conventional CSIs. In order to realize the potential capabilities of the boost inverter and to assist its penetration into renewable energy systems, the boost inverter dynamic behaviors are studied in this paper. First, the large- and small-signal models as well as the dq-equivalent circuits of the boost inverter are presented. Then, the developed models are verified using circuit simulations and experiments on a laboratory-scale 2-kW 208/240- V_{\rm LLrms} V_{\rm dc}=65\ \hbox{V} $ boost inverter made of reverse-blocking IGBTs. Finally, the developed small-signal model is used to study the stability of the boost inverter through root locus of small signal poles (eigenvalues) as control inputs, and load parameters vary within the boost inverter's operating limits. This paper proposes a novel isolated bidirectional two-switch flyback converter with two integrated non-dissipative inductor–capacitor–diode (LCD) snubbers. In the proposed topology, the main flyback transformer and the LCD snubbers are cross coupled to minimize circulating current that would occur in the non-cross-coupled case, in addition to recycle leakage energy and protect the power transistors. The same current circulation issue also occurs in the bidirectional flyback converter with conventional resistor–capacitor–diode (RCD) snubbers. The main objective of this paper is to illustrate this issue and propose an alternate circuitry to reduce the current circulation and improve the conversion efficiency. This paper presents a multifunctional control system for interlinking converters interfacing microgrids and ac mains. Applicable standards pose power quality and grid-support function requirements for converters that interface energy resources of dc nature with an ac utility grid. At the same time, the forthcoming smart grid scenario calls for additional functionalities, enabling the effective integration of hybrid (i.e., dc or ac) microgrids, that are applicable to both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. This requires novel interlinking converter controllers with extended flexibility. The control system described in this paper fulfills both connected and islanded operation needs and provides seamless transitions between the two modes. Such valuable functionalities are attained owing to an underlying, large-bandwidth, triple-loop control organization. The target converter is meant to be connected to a local dc subgrid at the dc side and to a local ac subgrid at the ac side. The controller manages the connection of the ac-side subgrid with the utility grid, ensuring a fast response control of the ac grid current. Therefore, it allows interfacing of renewable sources and loads, aggregated in dc and ac nanogrids or microgrids, with smart power systems, providing enhanced power quality, stability, and flexibility of operation. In this paper, a new nonisolated high step-down dc–dc converter with ultrahigh step-down conversion ratio is proposed. Advantages of the proposed converter are high step-down ratio, extended duty cycle, reduced switching losses by a converter operation under zero-voltage switching (ZVS) conditions, reduced reverse reco-very losses of diodes by achieved zero-current switching turn-off condition, and reduced voltage spikes by the inherent active-clamping structure of the converter. In this converter, series capacitors and coupled inductors have been used in power path to achieve the low voltage gain and extended duty cycle. By the inherent active-clamping structure of the proposed converter, the leakage inductance energy is totally recovered in the output; therefore, the high voltage spike across the semiconductor devices is suppressed. The switches of the proposed converter can operate under ZVS conditions, which cause reduced switching losses and improved efficiency. For interleaved boost-type converters, both functions of voltage regulation and current balance are important. In this paper, the decoupled current-balancing control (DCBC) with two parallel loops is proposed. At first, the small-signal transfer functions of the voltage-regulation loop and the current balancing loop to the controller output are derived. The results show that the voltage-regulation loop and the proposed current-balancing loop are nominally decoupled. That is, two PI-type controllers can be designed independently and included to implement the proposed DCBC. Additionally, the single-sensor sampling-current strategy is proposed to obtain two average inductor currents by sensing only the sum of diode currents. Single-stage power-factor-corrected (S2PFC) power supplies usually suffer from high voltage stress, due to lack of control on the intermediate bus capacitor voltage. In the past, analysis of such voltage stress was mostly based on steady-state condition without providing sufficient explanation during the transient circuit operation. This paper revisits the problem at circuit level and reports that the root cause is due to the inherent negative current feedback property of the output inductor or the transformer operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). Based on the finding, this paper further proposes a new approach to reducing the voltage stress by adding an auxiliary circuit branch to existing S2PFC converters. The additional circuit branch limits the effect of negative current feedback by suppressing the change of output current slope due to change of load. This assists the pulsewidth modulation controller to track the change of load better such that the bus capacitor voltage range is reduced through duty cycle control. The auxiliary circuit branch also reduces reverse-recovery-related losses of the converter under CCM operation. Back-to-back converters have been typically used to interconnect microgrids. For a back-to-back current-source converter, the dc-link current ripple is one of the important parameters. A large ripple will cause electromagnetic interference, undesirable high-frequency losses, and system instability. Conventionally, with a given switching frequency and rated voltage, the current ripple can be reduced by increasing the dc-link inductor, but it leads to bulky size, high cost, and slow dynamic response. To solve this problem, this paper reveals that the current ripple can be significantly reduced by adjusting the gate patterns of space vector modulation between the rectifier and the inverter in a back-to-back converter. A merit of the interleaving reducing the switching harmonics allows for the reduction of the filter inductance. However, in the case of direct parallel voltage source inverters (VSIs), a severe circulating current occurs. To suppress the high frequency circulating current, coupled inductors (CIs) for the high impedance is inserted. However, the employed CIs induce a positive- or negative-sequence circulating current (i.e., a cross current) besides the zero-sequence circulating current already mentioned in the other papers. Due to different impedances developed by the current characteristics and the cross current in the CIs, VSIs becomes unstable when the resonant controllers are applied for the harmonic compensation such as 5, and 7th harmonics. In this paper, the cross currents and the impedances of CIs varying with the current characteristics are mathematically analyzed, and a novel current controller is proposed to solve this stability problem. Induction heating technology is leading technical advances in home appliances due to the benefits inherent to the contactless energy transfer including high efficiency, fast heating, safety, cleanness, and accurate control, among others. Recent design trends are focused on developing more versatile cooking appliances for an improved user performance. To achieve such implementations, new multicoil architectures and power converters must be developed. This paper proposes the series-resonant multiinverter as an efficient, versatile, and cost-effective alternative to supply multiinductor systems. One of the main design challenges is the high blocking voltage of power devices, which may compromise the converter performance. This paper proposes an optimized modulation strategy to reduce the maximum device voltage, enabling an optimized converter design with improved reliability and performance. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Microinverters require high voltage gain capability for interfacing the low dc voltage output of photovoltaic (PV) module to single-phase ac grid. A two-stage nonisolated inverter is proposed in this paper, with a first boost stage and a second traditional pulse width modulated grid-tied inverter stage. The proposed boost stage consists of a coupled inductor added with a voltage multiplier to achieve the required high voltage gain at high efficiency and to operate over a wide input voltage range. Among the coupled inductor topologies, adding a clamp circuit is a common solution to limit the voltage spike caused by leakage inductance. In the proposed converter, the resonance between the coupled inductor and voltage multiplier is used to address the issue of voltage spike, thereby reducing both component count and device voltage stress. Detailed analysis and design procedure of the proposed converter is presented in this paper. Experimental results of a 250-W microinverter are presented to validate the proposed converter. In applications that demand single-input dual-output (SIDO) or dual-input single-output (DISO) dc–dc converters, employing two separate single-input single-output (SISO) converters is a solution. However, the number of components is doubled, resulting in high overall cost. In order to reduce costs, this paper proposes a novel topology synthesis methodology, with which a variety of SIDO and DISO dc–dc converters with reduced components can be derived. The principle of topology synthesis states that integrated SIDO and DISO dc–dc converters can be easily developed from conventional SISO converters by replacing a diode with a basic cell inclusive of additional input/output port. The principle is effective for many SISO dc–dc converters, and as an example, topology synthesis based on buck, boost, buck–boost, Cuk, sepic, and zeta SISO converters is performed in this paper. In order to achieve better understanding of the proposed converters, the integrated SIDO Cuk converter is specifically analyzed and experimentally verified. In comparison with the conventional scheme of two separate SISO Cuk converters, good cross regulation is retained while the number of diodes, inductors, and capacitors is reduced in the proposed SIDO Cuk converter. In addition, zero-voltage-switching operation of one switch is achieved, contributing to lower switching losses. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. A novel hybrid pulse width modulation (PWM) technique is proposed in this paper for two parallel interleaved, two-level, three-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs). The two parallel interleaved VSIs are analyzed as a three-level (3L) inverter. A 3L inverter provides minimum line current ripple when nearest three voltage vectors are applied. In this paper, a novel carrier-based PWM technique is developed that ensures the application of nearest voltage vectors, keeping average circulating current to zero over a switching period. For carrier-based implementation of the proposed PWM, generalized common-mode (CM) offsets are derived in terms of maximum and minimum values of reference signals. Each 3L space-vector sector is divided into seven subsectors. For each subsector, a CM offset is calculated, addition of which to reference signals ensures the minimum line current ripple and zero average circulating current. The phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter is widely employed in high-power applications. However, circulating current, narrow range of zero-voltage switching (ZVS), duty-cycle loss, and secondary parasitic oscillation are the main drawbacks of the traditional PSFB converter. This paper proposes an improved full-bridge converter to solve the drawbacks of the traditional PSFB converter. In the proposed converter, a coupled inductor with three windings is introduced to adjust the available ZVS energy and to transfer power to the output side during freewheeling period. Due to this structure, output filter requirement, circulating current, the required ZVS energy, and secondary voltage oscillation can be reduced. Thus, the proposed converter can obtain higher conversion efficiency than the traditional PSFB converter. In this paper, the detailed operation principles and experimental results are presented. This paper investigates and evaluates the performance of a single-phase split-source inverter (SSI), where an alternative unidirectional dc–ac configuration is used. Such configuration is utilized in order to use two common-cathode diodes in a single device instead of using two separate diodes, resulting in minimum parasitic inductance in the commutation paths. In this paper, the analysis and modulation of the single-phase SSI using this alternative configuration is discussed, and the analysis of the low-frequency component in the dc side is introduced. Moreover, the features behind employing the triangular, the trailing-edge sawtooth, and the leading-edge sawtooth carriers with the single-phase SSI are discussed, and the differences among these carriers are highlighted. In order to highlight the performance of the proposed SSI, a comparative study is conducted with the two-stage architecture and the single-phase quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). The introduced analysis is enhanced with simulation results using MATLAB/PLECS models, where a 1-kVA single-phase SSI is designed and simulated. This paper proposes a wide-range zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) active-clamped current-fed push–pull converter for fuel cell application. The presented converter achieves ZVS for all of the primary switches and ZCS for secondary diodes from rated load to 10% full load over the wide input voltage variation, improving the overall efficiency. The ZVS of switches is realized by the energy stored in the transformer leakage inductance aided by the secondary parallel inductor. An additional active clamping circuit suppresses the voltage spike as well as assists in realizing ZVS of switches. Low-voltage-rated switches with low on-state resistance can be used. Moreover, the voltage-doubler rectifier is adopted to release the reverse-recovery problem of rectifier diodes and reduce turns ratio of the high-frequency transformer. This paper proposes a family of soft-switching bidirectional converters. In many applications, the bidirectional converters operate over a wide range of duty cycle and load variations. In the proposed converters, in order to extend the zero-voltage switching operation range, two supplemental voltage sources utilizing passive components are implemented in the auxiliary circuit. By using this method, the soft-switching features are ensured for an extensive range of the converter duty cycles. This is achieved independent of the output power value or the converter operation mode, and so, soft switching is ensured within the entire converter operating region. In these converters, all semiconductors components are soft switched, and the auxiliary circuit does not contribute to the complexity of the control circuit. Also, no extra voltage stress exists on the main switches and the voltage stress on the auxiliary switches is lower than the main switches voltage stress. An active method for double-frequency power ripple decoupling in single-phase inverters is presented in this paper, exhibiting the main advantage of not using additional power semiconductors besides the H-bridge. The proposed method requires only two capacitors placed between the midpoint and one end of each inverter leg. An original control solution of the inverter ensures the power ripple transfer toward the two decoupling capacitors without affecting the inverter output voltage. The simple design makes the proposed solution easy to adapt for single-phase inverters in H-bridge configuration. This paper proposes an interleaved buck converter (IBC) with continuous input current, extremely low output current ripple, low switching losses, and improved step-down conversion ratio. Unlike the conventional IBC, the proposed converter has a continuous input current, and its output current ripple is extremely low. The proposed converter has a lower voltage stress in comparison to the conventional IBC and can also provide a high step-down ratio, which makes it a proper choice for high-power applications where a nonisolated step-down converter with low output current ripple and continuous input current is required. Also, the proposed converter can provide current sharing between two interleaved modules without using additional current-sharing control method. A high-voltage tapped-inductor buck converter utilizing a novel autonomous high-voltage valve is presented in this paper. Its application as auxiliary power supply for high-power cascaded-converter submodules is discussed, followed by a presentation of the most challenging problems in designing a low-power high-voltage step-down converter. The TI-buck converter topology is analyzed, which together with the novel autonomous high-voltage valve overcomes most of the problems. Analytical expressions describing the operation as well as circuit simulations are presented. Connecting legs in parallel in a voltage source inverter is a way to increase the output current and, thus, its rated power. The connection can be made using either coupled or uncoupled inductors, and achieving an even contribution to the output current from all the legs is a crucial issue. Circulating currents produce additional losses and stress to the power devices of the converter. Therefore, they should be controlled and minimized. An efficient technique to attain such balance when coupled inductors are used is presented in this paper. The proposed technique can also be used when the inductors are uncoupled, since it is a particular case where the coupling coefficients are zero. This technique does not include proportional–integral controllers and does not require any parameter tuning either. The exact control action needed to reach current balance is straightforwardly calculated and applied. In this paper, the soft-switching ac-link ac–ac buck–boost converter will be studied in more detail. This single-stage converter, which is, in essence, an extension of the dc–dc buck–boost converter, can be an excellent alternative to dc-link converters. Being a buck–boost converter, this converter is capable of both stepping-up and stepping-down the voltage. The link current and voltage are both alternating, and their frequency can be as high as permitted by the switches and the sampling time of the microcontroller. This eliminates the need for dc inductors or dc electrolytic capacitors, and the main energy storage element is an ac inductor $(L)$. Moreover, in this converter, galvanic isolation can be provided by adding a single-phase high-frequency transformer to the link. Therefore, the proposed converter is expected to be more compact compared to the conventional dc-link converter. The other advantage of this converter is the soft switching of the switches, which is feasible by adding a small capacitor $(C)$ to the link. In this paper, the design and analysis of this converter will be studied in detail. In order to accurately analyze this converter, the effect of the $LC$ link resonance on the performance of the converter will be studied. This analysis helps in evaluating the performance of the converter at low power levels when the resonating time of the $LC$ link is not negligible. Using this analysis, the link peak current and the link frequency may be calculated at any point of operation. The accuracy of this method is verified through simulations and experiments. Detailed comparison of the proposed converter with the dc-link converter will be also presented in this paper. It will be shown that, despite having more switches, the current rating of the switches is lower in this converter. Moreover, the efficiencies of the two converters will be compared. Finally, the performance of the soft-switching ac-link ac–ac buck–boost converter is experimentally evaluated in this paper. The quasi- $Z$ source (qZS) cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI) (qZS-CMI) presents attractive advantages in application to photovoltaic (PV) power system. Each PV panel connects to an H-bridge qZS inverter (qZSI) to form a power generation module. The distributed maximum power point tracking and all modules' dc-link peak voltage balance can be achieved. However, it is the same with the conventional CMI that the second-harmonic ( $2\omega$) voltage and current ripples exist in each qZSI module. It is crucial for a qZS-CMI to design the reasonable qZS network parameters to limit the ripples within a desired range. This paper proposes an analytic model to accurately calculate the $2\omega$ voltage and current ripples of each qZSI module. A qZS impedance design method based on the built model is proposed to limit the $2\omega$ ripples of dc-link voltage and inductor current. Simulated and experimental results through using the designed 1.5-kW prototype validate the proposed analytic model and the design method. Furthermore, this paper analyzes all of the operating states for a qZSI module and calculates the power loss. In this paper, a novel transformerless interleaved high step-down conversion ratio dc–dc converter with low switch voltage stress is proposed. In the proposed converter, two input capacitors are series-charged by the input voltage and parallel-discharged by a new two-phase interleaved buck converter for providing a much higher step-down conversion ratio without adopting an extreme short duty cycle. Based on the capacitive voltage division, the main objectives of the new voltage-divider circuit in the converter are for both storing energy in the blocking capacitors for increasing the step-down conversion ratio and reducing voltage stresses of active switches. As a result, the proposed converter topology possesses the low switch voltage stress characteristic. This will allow one to choose lower voltage rating MOSFETs to reduce both switching and conduction losses, and the overall efficiency is consequently improved. Moreover, due to the charge balance of the blocking capacitor, the converter features automatic uniform current sharing characteristic of the interleaved phases without adding extra circuitry or complex control methods. A significant reduction of electromagnetic interference (EMI) for a fine-motion control rod drive (FMCRD) in a nuclear reactor is presented in this paper. A reactor design with the FMCRD can achieve high performance. However, the FMCRD produces electromagnetic noise, which affects the startup-range neutron monitoring (SRNM) system. Moreover, because the FMCRD and the SRNM system are arranged near each other under a reactor vessel, the SRNM unit is influenced by the FMCRD electromagnetic noise, leading to uncertain monitoring results and system alarms. Strong EMI could even result in a system trip. To alleviate the EMI, a grounded metal sheet is wrapped around the FMCRD cable, partially shielding it from radiation. To further overcome the EMI, a proposed three-dimensional (3-D) low-pass filter (LPF) structure is combined with the SRNM wire for noise reduction. To implement the 3-D LPF structure, an industrial passive electronic device (zippered cable shielding) is adopted in this paper. This approach not only achieves a remarkable noise amplitude reduction but also minimizes the radiated emissions from the FMCRD cables, yielding an improved and stabilized nuclear reactor. In addition, a real-time analytical method is utilized to capture events while the FMCRDs are active, and the captured waveforms are transferred to the frequency domain by using a fast Fourier transform to analyze the experiment data, lending more insight into the actual situation. This paper discusses the analysis and experimental validation of bidirectional Z-source breaker and bidirectional Z-source breaker using coupled inductor for low-voltage dc microgrid application. The proposed topologies use an SCR as a switch to isolate the fault from the system, and LC network to generate required commutation conditions for the SCR under fault conditions. Thus, both topologies are able to isolate the fault naturally within a few microseconds without any fault detection and sensing circuit. In this paper, the breaker operating principle is discussed during fault condition and breaker design criteria are derived. When the breaker is connected in series with power electronic converter, Z-source components offer filtering characteristic. The filtering characteristic offered by the breaker components is analyzed. A hybrid self-powered synchronous electric charge extraction (HSP-SECE) interface circuit based on double stack resonance is presented in this paper. The proposed HSP-SECE interface circuit can simultaneously extract energy from piezoelectric transducer (PZT) and thermoelectric generator (TEG) when the peak open-circuit voltage of the PZT is detected by passive peak detector. The output power of the proposed interface circuit can reach three times of that of full-bridge rectifier circuit at the maximum power point, and the maximum efficiency of harvesting thermoelectric energy can reach 76% at 200 mV of the open-circuit voltage of the TEG. As a high-efficiency converter for photovoltaic power generation, the integrated boost series resonant (IBSR) converter includes three inductors, two capacitors, and one transformer, which occupy a significant volume. In order to further increase the power density, this paper proposes a novel passive integrated unit with the flexible multilayer foil integration technique for the above six passive components. First of all, the distributed electromagnetic component model of one new flexible three-layer film shows that the distributed parasitic capacitors formed by the insulation film are combined into the resonant capacitance. Then, the configuration of the proposed integrated unit is described in detail, and the electromagnetic analysis is given. Furthermore, the design procedure for the proposed integrated unit is demonstrated. In this paper, closed-loop control and boundary condition for continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode of nonisolated inverting N× multilevel boost converter (MBC) are articulated. Inverting N× MBC combines the features of classical boost converter and voltage multiplier to attain inverting N times higher voltage. Consequently, the inverting N× MBC provides a viable solution for high-voltage step-up photovoltaic applications with low voltage rating reactive components and semiconductor devices. The control strategy with saturation limiter is employed to achieve highly stable voltage. The modes of operation, benefits of inverting N× MBC, and key factors for the selection of semiconductor devices and sizing of the reactive components are discussed. Additionally, the effects of reactive components and semiconductor devices on the output voltage are examined. In this paper, a voltage sensorless controller is developed for a two-switch single-phase rectifier that involves power factor correction and active pulsating power buffering without electrolytic capacitors. While a two-switch rectifier normally requires four sensed signals for control, only one current sensor is required in this proposal, thereby offering advantages such as low cost, high compactness, isolation between control and power circuits, and improved reliability. While the basic operating principle follows that of a conventional voltage sensorless controller for single-switch converters, several critical design considerations are the key to the success of the implementation which is explained in detail. This paper studies how an outer fractional winding can impact the equivalent parallel capacitance (EPC) of a differential-mode inductor, which is a critical passive component in a power electronic converter to combat with electromagnetic noises, and proposes a winding scheme that can reduce EPC and increase inductance, achieving both high-frequency filtering performance and high density. To perform these studies, a comprehensive layer capacitance model based on energy equivalence principle is established, which decouples EPC contribution among three elements, i.e., outer fraction layer, layer-to-layer, and layer-to-core, thus enabling the impact evaluation of different winding elements and schemes. Experimental comparison results have validated the accuracy of this EPC model and excellent performance of the proposed winding scheme with EPC reduction by 4×. It reveals that contrary to previous understanding, the inverse winding, in fact, is more effective for EPC reduction than the direct winding in most of the partial layer scenarios, and that by using this scheme with the outer fraction layer, 45% higher inductance and slightly less EPC can be achieved, compared to the single-layer winding design. In this paper, a novel quasi-resonant flyback converter that mainly comprises two modules of flyback converters is proposed. A relay is connected in series to the input terminals of two transformers, and the transformer input structure is adjusted according to the input voltage to improve the conversion efficiency. In addition, a novel frequency-limiting quasi-resonant control strategy for solving the limitations of the conventional quasi-resonant control strategies is proposed, wherein the switching frequency is increased under light load conditions. This paper proposes a 20 MHz low-profile dc–dc converter with magnetic-free characteristics based on aircore planar inductors. The switch and diode of the proposed converter operate in soft-switching modes, which significantly reduces the switching loss. Furthermore, the parasitic capacitances are taken as part of corresponding resonant capacitors. A high-performance aircore inductor with a variable width and an optimal connecting angle is analyzed. This paper develops a 200 W two-stage rail grade dc–dc module based on gallium-nitride devices. It converts a wide input voltage (64–160 V) to a constant output voltage (24 V). Different devices and topologies are evaluated for the target application, based on which a two-stage configuration is proposed. The first stage is a two-phase regulated buck converter working under critical mode ($>$ 400 kHz), which is followed by an unregulated 48-V/24-V LLC converter (2 MHz) for 3000-V dc isolation. The voltage regulation is discussed for the buck converter when the inductors are negatively coupled, and then the zero voltage switching (ZVS) extension is explored. However, due to the limitation of the digital controller, a tradeoff is made between the dynamic response and the footprint. The compromise solution is to use a small and slow microcontroller for high frequency control (including voltage regulation, critical mode operation, phase interleaving) and various demands (including soft start-up, external communication, and various protections). This paper presents a new highly integrable hybrid step-down converter that merges switched-inductor and switched-capacitor operations and significantly reduces onboard loss by using the input cable's parasitic inductance as its main inductor. This converter has the inductor placed at the input with a smaller voltage swing, leading to possible use of a smaller inductor and low-voltage rating switches that generally translate to reduced conduction losses. Analyses of converter operation and losses to reveal its original characteristics and design guidelines are presented to facilitate the components optimization. The converter architecture is verified by a proof-of-concept 15-W inductor-less lithium-ion battery charger prototype that uses a 1-m USB 3.0 cable as inductor. The converter, switched at 2 MHz from a 5-V input, experimentally achieves 89.7% peak efficiency and 6% higher efficiency at full load than a Buck converter counterpart. This high efficiency and zero onboard inductor yield a relative 45.7% onboard loss reduction at full load, promising excellent integration feasibility and superior system thermal management.
