Rising demand for distributed generation based on renewable energy sources (RES) has led to several issues in the operation of utility grids. The microgrid is a promising solution to solve these problems. A dedicated energy storage system could contribute to a better integration of RES into the microgrid by smoothing the renewable resource's intermittency, improving the quality of the injected power and enabling additional services like voltage and frequency regulation. However, due to energy/power technological limitations, it is often necessary to use hybrid energy storage systems (HESS). In this paper, a second-order sliding mode controller is proposed for the power flow control of a HESS, using a four-leg three-level neutral-point-clamped (4-Leg 3L-NPC) inverter as the only interface between the RES/HESS and the microgrid. A 3-D space vector modulation and a sequence-decomposition-based ac-side control allow the inverter to work in unbalanced load conditions while maintaining a balanced ac voltage at the point of common coupling. DC current harmonics caused by unbalanced load and the NPC floating middle point voltage, together with the power division limits, are carefully addressed in this paper. This paper presents a method for small-signal dynamic studies of power systems including utility-scale PV energy systems considering the effects of dc-side components. Existing methods commonly model a PV energy system as a dc source connected to a grid-tied inverter. This paper shows that the dc components of a PV energy system can also contribute in the dynamics of the power system in the range of small-signal studies. The paper first develops the model of a PV energy system by merging the submodels of dc- and ac-side components. Then, a method to obtain the augmented model of the power system including a PV energy system will be explained using a study system. The study system consists of a PV energy system in parallel with a synchronous generator connected to a grid. Then, based on eigenvalue analysis, verified by time-domain simulations, it is shown that the dc-link capacitor, front-end converter, and its controller can introduce oscillatory modes in subsynchronous range of frequencies. To achieve precise voltage value for modern model-based motor control strategies, an accurate voltage distortion compensation method for voltage source inverters is proposed in this paper. The voltage distortion principles of a mosfet-based inverter and an IGBT-based inverter are analyzed and compared. A graphical solution of compensating voltage error is proposed, all the voltage distortion factors are considered. A current observer is designed to overcome time delay, achieve precise current in each switching period for compensation. The proposed method is of high precision, intuitive, and easy to implement. This paper shows the feasibility of a novel decentralized control scheme for the grid-tied ac-stacked photovoltaic (PV) inverter architecture. The proposed decentralized control scheme with low-bandwidth communications requirements enables a fully distributed PV inverter architecture. Detailed modeling and theoretical analyses will be provided to support the existence of such decentralized control scheme. Simulation and experimental results on a representative laboratory-scale prototype will be presented under symmetrical and asymmetrical conditions as well as 10% grid voltage sag to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in different operating conditions. This paper deals with an analysis of a middle-frequency resistance spot-welding (RSW) system with a dc welding current controlled by a pulsewidth modulated inverter, which supplies a welding transformer with a full-wave rectifier mounted at the secondary. Welding transformers in the automotive industry are usually mounted on the arm of a moving robot, so the weight is important. To achieve the same welding power with a large welding current, the transformer's weight can be reduced with a higher PWM switching frequency. This higher frequency allows a reduction in the transformer's iron-core cross section with shorter primary and secondary windings. Unfortunately, the leakage inductances prevent the RSW system from achieving the same nominal welding current at higher frequencies. The frequency-dependent maximum welding current is a characteristic behavior of the RSW system, which can be determined by sophisticated and time-consuming simulations or with the expensive measurements. The third option presented in this paper is determination of an analytical solution, which allows calculation of the maximum welding current as function of frequency or any parameter of the RSW system circuit model. The analytically calculated frequency-dependent function of the maximum welding current was completely confirmed by measurements on an industrial RSW system and by numerical simulations. Inverter-based distributed generation (DG) system is becoming an attractive solution for high penetration of renewable energy sources to the main grid. DG system should be able to supply power to the local loads whenever necessary even in case of utility power outage. Thus, the inverters in DG systems are expected to operate in both grid-connected and islanded mode, where they are acting as a current source for the ac grid and a voltage-source for the load, respectively. Transition between modes of operation is nontrivial and can cause deviations in voltage and current, because of mismatch in frequency, phase, and amplitude between the inverter output voltage and the grid voltage. Thus, it is necessary to have seamless transition between grid-connected and islanded mode. This paper presents a new control strategy with seamless transfer characteristics for a grid-connected voltage-source inverter using model predictive control (MPC) framework. The main objectives of the proposed predictive controller are: 1) decoupled power control in grid-connected mode, which enables the proposed power electronics interface to provide ancillary services such as reactive power compensation; 2) load voltage control in islanded mode; and 3) seamless transition between modes of operation through proposed synchronization and phase adjustment algorithm. The proposed controller features simplicity to implement since only one cost function should be minimized for all modes of operation, and hence no ambiguity in the control algorithm that could cause mode transition problems. An autotuning strategy for weight factors in MPC cost function is proposed to simplify the weight factor tuning strategy. The stability analysis of the proposed controller is provided. In this paper, a switching loss-free (SLF) concept for the first six-switches H-bridge inverter (H6-I) topology is proposed. SLF means that its switches are able to operate with soft turn-on and turn-off transitions. In order to implement the SLF goal, a new resonance-trajectory is proposed. Compared with the zero-current-transition H6-I (ZCT-H6-I) topology published in previous literature, the proposed resonance-trajectory can precisely compensate for losses of resonant tanks every switching period. With this intention, an implementing circuit is structured based on the H6-I topology, and its detailed operation principle and performance characteristics are analyzed. As a result, all active switches of the new circuit are switched under zero-current turn-on and zero-current turn-off conditions. Also, the reverse recovery problem of freewheeling diodes is alleviated owing to the zero-current turn-off property of diodes. The SLF target is realized in theory. Finally, experimental results from a 1 kW prototype at 50 kHz switching frequency are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed SLF concept in practice. Specifically, the conversion efficiency of the new circuit is over 95% in a wide load range, and there is roughly a 1.5% efficiency improvement compared with the hard-switching H6-I topology. The paper presents an innovative concept of applying a combination of well-known selective harmonic elimination (SHE) and selective harmonics mitigation (SHM) methods to shape a spectrum of catenary current harmonics, generated by a traction drive system equipped with a voltage source inverter. Application of this method allows for reducing distorting influence of a modern rolling stock supplied by a 3 kV dc catenary on the railway signaling, command, and control systems. The efficiency of the proposed method is independent of synchronization of a vehicle's inverters and of load balance of traction motors, which makes it more reliable than as it is proposed in the literature. Results of computer simulations were presented and compared with laboratory measurements. The obtained dc-link current spectrum using the proposed SHE/SHM method was compared with spectra received using synchronized and unsynchronized sinusoidal pulse-width modulations (SPWMs). Based on the conducted tests, it was shown that the proposed method of control, which was implemented in a laboratory drive system, is effective in reducing dc side current harmonics in a frequency range of 1300–3100 Hz, which is used by track circuits on railway lines, e.g., in Poland. Silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs and gallium nitride (GaN) high-electron mobility transistors are perceived as future replacements for Si IGBTs and MOSFETs in medium- and low-voltage drives due to their low conduction and switching losses. However, it is widely believed that the already significant conducted common-mode (CM) electromagnetic interference (EMI) emission of motor drives will be further exacerbated by the high-speed switching operation of these new devices. Hence, this paper investigates and quantifies the increase in the conducted CM EMI emission of a pulse width modulation inverter-based motor drive when SiC and GaN devices are adopted. Through an analytical approach, the results reveal that the influence of dv/dt on the conducted CM emission is generally limited. LCL-filter is commonly used to attenuate the switching harmonics of grid-connected converters. LCL -filter creates resonances in the converter dynamics which shall be damped for ensuring robust performance of the converter. Active damping methods can be used to attenuate the resonant behavior effectively. Accordingly, the output impedance is affected and the grid-interaction sensitivity of the converter varies with the active damping design. In order to carry out impedance-based stability analysis or assessment of the harmonic rejection capability, an accurate analytical model to predict the output impedance is necessary. This paper investigates the output impedance properties of capacitor-current-feedback active damping, which are so far not considered thoroughly in the literature. The output impedance modification with the active damping design is explained, thus, the stability and harmonic rejection capability of the converter can be improved. In this paper, two topologies are presented for the enhanced-boost quasi-Z-source inverters (qZSI), namely continuous input current configuration and discontinuous input current configuration of enhanced-boost qZSI with two-switched impedance networks. Similar to enhanced-boost impedance-source inverters (ZSIs), these proposed inverter topologies possess very high boost voltage inversion at low shoot-through duty ratio and high modulation index to provide an improved quality output voltage. Compared to enhanced-boost ZSIs with two-switched Z-source impedance networks, these proposed inverter topologies share common ground with source and bridge inverter, overcome the starting inrush problem, and draw continuous input current and the lower voltage across the capacitors. Repetitive control (RC) with linear phase lead compensation provides a simple but very effective control solution for any periodic signal with a known period. Multirate repetitive control (MRC) with a downsampling rate can reduce the need of memory size and computational cost, and then leads to a more feasible design of the plug-in RC systems in practical applications. However, with fixed sampling rate, both MRC and its linear phase lead compensator are sensitive to the ratio of the sampling frequency to the frequency of interested periodic signals: 1) MRC might fails to exactly compensate the periodic signal in the case of a fractional ratio; 2) linear phase lead compensation might fail to enable MRC to achieve satisfactory performance in the case of a low ratio. In this paper, a universal fractional-order design of linear phase lead compensation MRC is proposed to tackle periodic signals with high accuracy, fast dynamic response, good robustness, and cost-effective implementation regardless of the frequency ratio, which offers a unified framework for housing various RC schemes in extensive engineering application. In this paper, novel remedial direct torque control (DTC) schemes are proposed for open-circuit faults in T-type neutral-point-clamping (T-NPC) three-level asymmetric six-phase permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. First, a simplified space vector modulation (SVM) is designed and applied for DTC-controlled asymmetric six-phase drive, in such a way that both good current harmonic performance and fast dynamic response are available. Based on the SVM-DTC scheme, a remedial strategy is proposed for the open-circuit faults in phase windings. The key is to derive the relationship between the stator fluxes and the stator voltages of all phases under faulty condition. Then, a derived perturbation term is compensated for normal voltage references, and the fault-tolerant scheme is, thus, implemented without changing control structure of normal condition. The remedial DTC schemes are also studied and proposed for open-switch faults in T-NPC six-phase drives. The modulation methods are redesigned for the faults in half-bridge switches and NPC switches. A single-phase common-mode transformerless grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) converter, which is based on the integration of two stages, is proposed in this paper. Transformer elimination in grid-connected PV systems has many advantages. It not only reduces cost, size, and weight but also increases the complete system efficiency. Since there is no galvanic isolation between grid and PV array, a leakage current may appear due to the PV parasitic capacitance to the ground, if this is not taken into account in the converter design. This paper presents a dc/dc boost converter integrated with a full-bridge inverter. The integration of these two stages reduces the ground leakage current. The neutral line of the grid is directly connected to the negative terminal of the PV array, eliminating any possibility of leakage current in this terminal. Conventional droop control methods cannot achieve accurate proportional reactive power sharing, due to the mismatch of components, system disturbances, etc. In this paper, an uncertainty and disturbance estimator (UDE)-based robust droop controller is proposed to address these problems. As a result, the model nonlinearity and uncertainty (e.g., power angle and uncertain output impedance) and system disturbances (e.g., variations of output impedance, load change, and fluctuating dc-link voltage) can be estimated and compensated. Experimental results from a single-phase system with two inverters are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. In order to further demonstrate the advantage and flexibility of the proposed UDE-based control strategy, simulation results from a three-phase system with two inverters are presented with comparison to a robust droop control strategy reported. Large transient inrush fault current in a synchronverter during a short-circuit fault can potentially damage the inverter and cause grid instability. It is therefore important to study the characteristics of and the way to restrain the inrush fault current. This paper investigates the characteristics of the synchronverter inrush fault current and proposes a new control method based on mode switching to protect synchronverters. First, an ideal voltage source inverter instantaneous inrush current calculation method for a grid symmetrical short circuit is discussed. Then, based on the inertia of synchronverter, the approximate calculation of the synchronverter instantaneous inrush current is described. The results show that the synchronverter's inrush current mainly consists of a gradually attenuated periodic component and a dc component when the phased voltage symmetry is lost. In our proposed new control approach, the synchronverter switches to the hysteresis controller to limit the output current quickly while staying connected to the grid, and supporting the grid voltage simultaneously. In this paper, a new general cascaded multilevel inverter using developed H-bridges is proposed. The proposed topology requires a lesser number of dc voltage sources and power switches and consists of lower blocking voltage on switches, which results in decreased complexity and total cost of the inverter. These abilities obtained within comparing the proposed topology with the conventional topologies from aforementioned points of view. Moreover, a new algorithm to determine the magnitude of dc voltage sources is proposed. The performance and functional accuracy of the proposed topology using the new algorithm in generating all voltage levels for a 31-level inverter are confirmed by simulation and experimental results. This paper presents a comparison of two modulation methods for the seven-level switched-capacitor (SC) inverter using series/parallel conversion (SCISPC). The SCISPC is a multilevel inverter which has the less number of switching devices than the conventional multilevel inverters. The level-shifted pulsewidth modulation (PWM) (LS-PWM) was applied to the seven-level SCISPC in the previous research. In this paper, the level- and phase-shifted PWM (LPS-PWM) and the LS-PWM are applied to the seven-level SCISPC, and LPS-PWM is compared with LS-PWM for the seven-level SCISPC. The LPS-PWM has both the characteristics of the phase-shifted PWM (PS-PWM) and the LS-PWM. The voltage reduction during the discharging term of the SCs is reduced by means of the shorter discharging period compared to LS-PWM. The voltage ripple of the capacitors is also reduced, which leads to higher power conversion efficiency. This paper presents the mathematical and harmonic analyses of output phase voltages of three-phase voltage source inverters which employ a hybrid two-dimensional–threedimensional (2-D–3-D) space vector modulation (SVM) voltage control algorithm. The explicit time-domain representation of the harmonic components in addition to the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output phase voltages is given in terms of system and control parameters. This paper also investigates the harmonic characteristics and THD performance against the linearity of the modulation region which helps in the harmonic performance and design studies of such inverters employing the hybrid 2-D–3-D SVM. The fundamental component of the output voltages follows the reference with lower THD in the linear modulation region rather than the overmodulation region. Experimental results are used to validate these analyses as well as the effectiveness of the hybrid 2-D–3-D SVM algorithm for generating balanced and low THD phase voltages. This paper proposes an adaptive control method of three-phase inverters for stand-alone distributed generation systems (DGSs). The proposed voltage controller includes two control terms: an adaptive compensating term and a stabilizing term. The adaptive compensating control term is constructed to avoid directly calculating the time derivatives of state variables. Meanwhile, the stabilizing control term is designed to asymptotically stabilize the error dynamics of the system. Also, a fourth-order optimal load current observer is proposed to reduce the number of current sensors and enhance the system reliability and cost effectiveness. The stability of the proposed voltage controller and the proposed load current observer is fully proven by using Lyapunov theory. The proposed control system can establish good voltage regulation such as fast dynamic response, small steady-state error, and low total harmonic distortion under sudden load change, unbalanced load, and nonlinear load. Finally, the validity of the proposed control strategy is verified through simulations and experiments on a prototype DGS test bed with a TMS320F28335 DSP. Neutral-point (NP)-clamped three-level inverter, which is a widely used topology of multilevel converters, suffers from the NP voltage drift as its main technical drawback. The nearest-three-virtual-vector (\NTV^2) modulation method can control the NP voltage balance for any load over the full range of inverter output voltage. However, compared with the nearest-three-vector (NTV) modulation method, \NTV^2 increases the switching frequency. This paper combines \NTV^2 with NTV, and the two methods are used alternately in a fundamental cycle. The duty-cycle coefficients of the redundant small vectors are analyzed to explore the intervals where NTV can control the NP voltage balance in a fundamental cycle. The proportional parameter, which represents the combination of the two methods in hybrid space vector pulsewidth modulation, can be selected to achieve a high-performance NP balance control and low switching frequency. In recent years, high photovoltaic array voltage up to 1000 V and transformerless grid-tied inverter have been increasingly researched and applied to elevate the inverter and the dc power collection efficiency. With the same reasons, a three-level neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) inverter featuring low power device voltage stress and low leakage current becomes increasingly attractive. In this paper, the operation and the features of a novel grid-tied 3L-NPC are presented. The proposed topology is a derivative of the three-level stacked neutral point clamped (3L-SNPC) structure. However, compared with the conventional 3L-SNPC and its pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy, the new topology with novel PWM strategy features completely inactive intrinsic body diodes. Furthermore, only two outer power devices are working with switching frequency, while the other four Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) are actually with the grid frequency. Therefore, the relatively high switching frequency is selected to reduce the inverter output filter inductance. A hybrid CoolMosfet and IGBT power module configuration is also proposed based on the new PWM strategy. The calculation shows that the total power device losses are reduced. Fault analysis in solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays is a fundamental task to protect PV modules from damage and to eliminate risks of safety hazards. This paper focuses on line–line faults in PV arrays that may be caused by short-circuit faults or double ground faults. The effect on fault current from a maximum-power-point tracking of a PV inverter is discussed and shown to, at times, prevent overcurrent protection devices (OCPDs) to operate properly. Furthermore, fault behavior of PV arrays is highly related to the fault location, fault impedance, irradiance level, and use of blocking diodes. Particularly, this paper examines the challenges to OCPD in a PV array brought by unique faults: One is a fault that occurs under low-irradiance conditions, and the other is a fault that occurs at night and evolves during “night-to-day” transition. In both circumstances, the faults might remain hidden in the PV system, no matter how irradiance changes afterward. These unique faults may subsequently lead to unexpected safety hazards, reduced system efficiency, and reduced reliability. This paper proposes a method to boost the terminal voltages using a capacitive network. The boosted voltage can improve the power capability of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). In the conventional drive system fed by a voltage-source inverter, the terminal voltages of the motor are limited by the dc-link voltage. Such a voltage limitation reduces the torque capability at high speeds. Thereby, the maximum output power is limited. To overcome this feature, series capacitor network between the inverter and the motor is introduced in the proposed IPMSM drive system. The series capacitors boost the motor terminal voltages higher than the inverter voltages to increase the rated speed, resulting in improved power capability. The rated speed in the proposed drive system can be redefined to the desired value through a capacitive network. The enhanced power capability and design freedom in the rated speed are particularly advantageous in fan-load applications where the load torque is proportional to the square of speed. This article presents the structure, d–q equivalent model, operating characteristics, and operable area of the proposed drive. A well-known issue of fuel-cell-powered single-phase uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) is that the input current from the dc source is coupled with the second-order current ripple due to the ac-side instantaneous power pulsating at twice the line frequency. The low-frequency ripple component has been confirmed to have detrimental impacts on fuel cell's reliability and lifespan. To solve this issue, a boost inverter that can work in both differential mode (DM) and common mode (CM) operations is adopted by this paper. The DM operation achieves active power conversion and a well-regulated ac output voltage. Meanwhile, the CM operation ensures effective dc current ripple reduction. In addition to operating with linear loads, the proposed control method extends its working scope to nonlinear loads, where meticulously designed repetitive controllers are employed to handle the multiple low-harmonic situations. Moreover, the proposed control method also introduces an interleaved pulse-width modulation to further reduce the switching frequency ripple in the dc current. The stability of the proposed control system is stringently examined. Grid-connected power conversion systems for renewable energy sources must fulfill several requirements, e.g., the high efficiency, the reduced cost and complexity, and, quite often, the boost capabilities that is usually achieved using a front-end dc–dc boost converter before the inversion stage, leading to a two-stage architecture. Meanwhile, single-stage power conversion systems, which perform the boosting operation within the inversion one, offer some potential advantages, in terms of reducing the complexity and the volume of the whole system. Among several proposed options, the split-source inverter (SSI) has been recently proposed by Abdelhakim et al. as an alternative option with some interesting features to the commonly used Z-source inverter. Taking into account that the SSI is controlled by a single parameter, i.e., its dc and ac sides are controlled by the modulation index, it is of paramount importance to investigate its control scheme in grid-connected mode, which has never been studied yet. Hence, this paper models the SSI dc side and proposes a modified modulation scheme combined with the commonly used synchronous reference frame control technique to achieve a decoupled control scheme of the SSI in grid-connected mode, i.e., the dc and the ac sides of the SSI can be controlled independently, which is convenient for many applications. The introduced control scheme is analyzed and simulated using a MATLAB/Simulink model, where a reduced scale 1-kVA grid-connected SSI is designed and simulated for the sake of experimental validation. In this paper, a novel large current rectifier using the fork-connected autotransformer and dc-side current injection method is proposed. The fork-connected autotransformer outputs two sets of three-phase voltages with 60° phase difference, and feeds two three-phase half-wave rectifiers. Compared with the isolated line-frequency transformer, the proposed autotransformer has lower kilovoltampere (kVA) rating under the same load power. An optimal designed single-phase full-bridge inverter is used to inject the compensation currents into the dc side of the two three-phase half-wave rectifier, which can reduce the harmonics in input line current to be an acceptable level. The kVA rating of the single-phase full-bridge inverter is very lower, and the proposed large current rectifier draws nearly sinusoidal currents from the ac main after using the dc-side injection. Clock drift in digital controllers is of great relevance in many applications. Since almost all real clocks exhibit drifts, this applies in particular to networks composed of several individual units, each of which being operated with its individual clock. In the present paper, we demonstrate via extensive experiments on a microgrid in the megawatt range that clock drifts may impair frequency synchronization in low-inertia power systems. The experiments also show that—in the absence of a common clock—the standard model of an inverter as an ideal voltage source does not capture this phenomenon. As a consequence, we derive a suitably modified model of an inverter-interfaced unit that incorporates the phenomenon of clock drifts. By using the derived model, we investigate the effects of clock drifts on the performance of droop-controlled grid-forming inverters with regard to frequency synchronization and active power sharing. Droop control strategy is widely applied in ac microgrid to realize the seamless mode transition and achieve average power sharing among different inverters. However, there is a lack of analysis about the operation performance of droop control strategy in grid-connected mode. In this paper, grid fluctuation and control accuracy of reactive power are illustrated to be the main influence factors for power flow control according to the small-signal model. The feedforward of grid frequency and voltage magnitude is proposed to mitigate the impacts of grid fluctuation on power flow control. Since the feedforward items are achieved through the synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop with the input of filter capacitor voltage, extra sensors for grid voltage are avoided. Moreover, voltage magnitude control is introduced to enhance the control accuracy of reactive power flow. In addition, modified droop control loops are also proposed to improve the system stability. With the implementation of the proposed control scheme, improved power flow control and enhanced system stability are achieved with the feature of seamless mode transition maintained. Accurate efficiency determination is very important in the field of electric drive research and development. Modern inverters generate pulse width modulated signals with short rise times and high frequencies. Thus, high-accuracy power measurements under nonsinusoidal conditions have to be performed. This requires high precision voltage and current probes, including frequency response flatness over a wide bandwidth and a high linearity up to a few hundred volts. This paper describes the development and characterization of a high-voltage differential probe, suitable for precise measurements in automotive electric drives. The main parts of the probe are two input voltage dividers with a further frequency compensation circuit and a difference amplifier. The complete circuit design and the compensation of parasitic effects are explained in detail. Final experiments show that the developed probe outperforms commercially available probes. The probe has a very flat frequency response up to 1 MHz, a bandwidth of 20 MHz, and a linearity better than 250 ppm up to the maximum differential input voltage of 1 kV. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper presents a three-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system, which is implemented using the neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter. A current feed-forward control loop (FFCL) is proposed to improve the PV system dynamic behavior, due to the PV array being constantly subjected to sudden solar irradiance change, which causes voltage oscillations in the dc bus and, hence, interferes in proper PV system operation. As the current FFCL acts to speed up the calculation of the inverter current references, the dynamic response of the currents injected into the grid is improved. As a consequence, the dynamic behavior of the dc-bus voltage is also enhanced, reducing both settling time and overshoot. Besides the injection of active power into the grid, the PV system is also controlled to perform active power-line conditioning, so that load harmonic currents are suppressed, as well as load reactive power is compensated. However, the NPC inverter must be properly designed to guarantee that its power rating will not be exceeded, since both fundamental and nonfundamental current components flow through the grid-tied inverter. This paper presents a new high-frequency modulation method for multilevel converters. The proposed method provides a broad linear operating range and can be digitally implemented with minimal computational effort. This modulation method creates a phase voltage composed of a rectangular component superimposed on the top of a quasi-square-shaped reference function. The reference functions are defined such that the utilization of the dc-link voltage is maximized in any modulation index, while the dv/dt of the switches is always the minimum possible value. In order to implement the proposed method, an update time that is much shorter than the fundamental period is defined in the algorithm for updating the rectangular components of the reference voltage. The high-frequency rectangular component can then be imposed on the reference function to generate the final switching function by switching between two voltage levels during the time between two update instances. In this paper, the near-state pulse width modulation (NSPWM), adapted to be used in dual-voltage source inverter (VSI) fed open-end load, is introduced primarily aiming to appreciably minimize the voltage total harmonic distortion (THD). Within the framework of the proposed method, the active time of pulses at the second inverter is relatively adjusted within switching interval (compared to the first VSI). The phase voltage harmonics are formulated for dual-inverter modulated by NSPWM; then, optimal adjustment is identified via a three-dimensional curve of phase voltage THD versus modulation index (MI) and phase angle displacement (PAD). Due to the limitation of MI in NSPWM, the desired output voltage is synthesized with modifying not only MI but also PAD between references of two VSIs. Furthermore, NSPWM inherently takes advantage of better efficiency compared to conventional space vector modulation due to switching only two phases within an interval (by clamping one phase to positive/negative dc-rail). The dual-VSI supplied by two isolated dc sources is assembled in the laboratory to experimentally evaluate the THD reduction feature of the proposed method; also, the simulation results obtained by means of a MATLAB/Simulink environment show close agreement with experimental data. LCL-filters are preferred over conventional L-filters for grid-connected voltage-source inverters (VSIs) due to their superior harmonic attenuation and smaller filter size and weight. The LCL-filter design process is complex and takes an iterative approach due to the considerations of resonance damping, reactive power compensation, harmonic attenuation limits, etc. This paper analyses the parameters of LCL-filter design in order to understand its significance in grid-connected applications. Secondly, based on the analysis, relationships between the resonance frequency, attenuation of switching ripple, reactive power production, and the ratio between the grid-side inductor and the inverter-side inductor are used to realize a simple LCL-filter design algorithm. The design considers LCL-filter as a single filtering unit rather than individual filtering contributions from passive components. The design is verified by simulations in MATLAB and validated experimentally via a hardware prototype. This paper presents an attempt to evaluate the building factor of a stator core made of nonoriented silicon steel laminations. The stator core is used in a synchronous motor with buried permanent magnets driven by a voltage source three-phase inverter with classical pulse-width modulation (PWM) control. The building factor is the ratio between the iron loss density in the stator core and the specific iron loss density of the material. It then gives an evaluation of the impact of the core manufacture and the motor geometrical configuration on the stator iron losses. A first experiment is conducted to measure the iron losses of the inverter-fed motor in no-load condition. The material-specific iron losses are then evaluated by trying to apply similar magnetic flux density conditions in a wound laminated ring. For large-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems, the multistring configuration is becoming more and more attractive compared with the classical central inverter, since it results in better energy yield by realizing distributed maximum power point tracking. Among the existing solutions, an attractive topology consists in a single dc bus bar collector cascaded H-bridge (CHB) inverter. Through the use of a single dc bus bar collector, the CHB inverter presents inherent balanced operation while the multistring PV-system is fully decoupled from the grid-tie inverter. This paper presents a new family of hybrid Z-source boost dc–dc converters intended for photovoltaic applications, where the high step-up dc–dc converters are demanded to boost the low-source voltages to a predefined grid voltage. Because the boost capabilities of the traditional Z-source networks are limited, the proposed converters are composed of combine traditional Z-source networks in different ways to enhance the boost abilities of the traditional Z-source networks. The new version of the proposed Z-source converters is termed as hybrid Z-source boost dc–dc converters to satisfy the traditional benefits of Z-source networks with stronger voltage boost abilities which can also be applied to dc–ac, ac–ac, and ac–dc power conversions. This paper is the continuation of Part I in which a quasi-Z-source modular cascaded converter (qZS-MCC), comprising front-end isolated qZS half-bridge dc–dc converter submodules (SMs), for dc integration of high-power photovoltaic (PV) systems is proposed. The qZS-MCC-based PV system features modular structure, high-voltage dc collection of PV power, simple control with a unified and constant duty cycle for the front-end isolation converter of all SMs, and low qZS impedance due to no double-line-frequency pulsating power. Here, control scheme of the qZS-MCC PV system integrated into the dc collection grid is investigated. Dynamic model of the system is established for controllers design and time-domain transient simulation. Repetitive control strategies have been commonly applied in pulse-width-modulated (PWM) voltage source inverters (VSIs) for many industrial applications. This paper presents a repetitive controller for voltage harmonic mitigation of VSI-based islanded microgrids. The phase delay in the overall control system, e.g., the delay caused by the digital duty cycle calculation, PWM generation, and repetitive controller, has to be compensated by elaborately designed phase lead filters in order to prevent control performance deterioration and system instability. Nevertheless, quantificational analysis and practical design of the time advance unit in such filters are hardly found in existing literature works. In view of this, this paper proposes an explicit analysis of the phase lead filters and a novel design method of the time advance unit in repetitive controllers to ensure system stability. Moreover, with the help of the proposed method, the overall system stability margin is predictable and improved controller performance is achieved as well. Leakage current reduction of the single-phase transformerless cascaded H-bridge PV inverter is investigated in this paper. The high-frequency common-mode loop model of a typical single-phase cascaded H-bridge PV system is established. Based on the model, the main factors that affect the leakage current are discussed. The reason why the typical single-phase cascaded H-bridge inverter fails to reduce the leakage current is explained. In order to solve the problem, a cascaded topology based on the H5 inverter is presented, along with a new modulation strategy, which can ensure that the stray capacitor voltage is free of high-frequency components. In this way, the leakage current can be effectively reduced. Finally, a prototype with TMS320F28335DSP + XC3S400FPGA digital control is built. Cascaded converters are adopted in many power systems to manage sources and loads at different voltage levels simultaneously. DC bus capacitor is one of the key components in these converters due to its energy storage and fast response capabilities. However, the ripple current through the capacitor will influence its lifetime and the overall efficiency of the converter. Previous studies showed that the capacitor current of ac systems is optimized when the duty cycles are synchronized under in phase or antiphase condition. In this paper, the bus capacitor ripple current of cascaded two-stage converters for dc systems with different combinations of duty cycles is analyzed. It is found that the optimum capacitor current ripple varies depending on the values of individual duty cycles and the phase-shift angle between them. By properly adjusting the phase shift, the capacitor RMS current value can be reduced without affecting the converter normal operation or the need for extra sensing circuits, hence improving the energy conversion efficiency and prolonging the capacitor lifetime with relatively simple implementation. To illustrate, a case study of a two-stage dc/dc converter is carried out. A laboratory prototype converter confirmed a maximum efficiency improvement of 2.8% if the phase shift is adjusted properly when compared to the same converter with the worst case phase-shift angle. This paper introduces a combination of two proposed efficiency improvement techniques for a microinverter with current mode control zero-voltage switching output stages. The first technique is dynamic dead-time optimization wherein pulse width modulation dead times are dynamically adjusted as a function of load current. The second method is advanced phase skipping control which maximizes inverter efficiency by controlling power on individual phases depending on the available input power from the photovoltaic source. Neither of the techniques requires any additional circuit components and both can be easily implemented in digital controller firmware. The two techniques were designed and implemented in a 400-W three-phase microinverter prototype. The experimental results validate the theoretical analysis of these techniques and demonstrate that a significant efficiency improvement can be achieved by combining the two proposed control techniques. In this paper, a control method based on the derivative of power is introduced for single-stage single-phase grid-connected cascaded H-bridge (CHB) photovoltaic inverters. The proposed scheme uses solar arrays derivative of power with respect to current to track maximum power point of each array individually. Using this method along with hybrid modulation technique allows utilization of CHB cells up to their full potential. The control system has a simple structure, and is inherently able to stabilize the system under heavy mismatching conditions where the modulation index goes higher than unity. Compensation of nonlinear effects generated by dead-time and semiconductors voltage drop has been widely studied in the literature about two-level converters. This paper takes a closer look at those analyses for multilevel converters, specifically for a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter modulated with phase-shifted pulse width modulation. The interaction between the cells is analyzed for a generic $n$ -cell converter, from which a general expression for the distortion generated by the nonlinearities has been obtained. Based on this expression, a compensation signal for the overall converter is calculated on each sample time, which is a fraction of the triangular carrier used to modulate each cell, thus significantly improving the quality of the output voltage signals. In high-power traction drive systems, the switching frequency of the inverter is strictly limited owing to the restrictions on switching losses and cooling conditions. In this case, the multimode modulation strategy is usually adopted. Based on the analysis of a modified 24-sector space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique, several synchronous modulation strategies with different pulse numbers are proposed in this paper, which can be applied to the two-level six-phase voltage-inverter-fed asymmetrical dual-stator induction machines. By comparing the harmonic performance of the synchronized modulations, the authors present a set of multimode SVPWM strategy, which is suitable for the high-power traction drive systems under low switching frequency. At the same time, the switching strategy for transitions between different modulation modes is proposed as well. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed synchronized modulation strategies and the switching strategy between different modulation modes. This paper presents an investigation on a nonredundant topology for two-leg fault at a back-to-back converter-fed induction motor drives. In the case of faults occurring in any two inverter legs, the six-leg back-to-back converter can be changed to a four-leg back-to-back converter by employing one motor phase connected to the rectifier leg and another phase connected to the dc-link capacitor mid-point for fault-tolerant operation. The four-leg back-to-back converter is very attractive for the merit of not requiring additional power switches for fault-tolerant. However, as the shared-leg connection between inverter and rectifier, the rectifier and the motor drive are deeply coupled. A novel scheme-based model-predictive control is presented to achieve independent control of the grid and motor currents. The voltage limitation for independent control of the rectifier and motor drive is analyzed, and the dc-link voltage utilization is improved by capacitor voltage suppression. With the proposed scheme, the output speed range of the converter is degraded, but other performances, such as output torque capability, unity power factor, and the dynamic response, are maintained after faults occur. This paper presents a finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) for grid-tied packed U cells (PUC) multilevel inverter (MLI). The system under study consists of a single-phase 3-cells PUC inverter connected to the grid through filtering inductor. The proposed competitive topology allows the generation of 7-level output voltage with reduction of passive and active components compared to the conventional MLIs. The aim of the proposed FCS-MPC technique is to achieve, under various operating conditions, grid-tied current injection with unity power factor and low total harmonic distortion while balancing the capacitor voltage. This paper presents a hybrid selective harmonic mitigation (SHM)-selective harmonic elimination (SHE) switching technique based on pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) concept. It has been applied on a four-leg neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter to eliminate and mitigate more harmonic orders than recently proposed hybrid SHM-SHE-pulse width modulation (PWM) method while generating switching pulses at the same frequency. In conventional SHE and SHM techniques, equations are solved to attain the switching angles. Regarding the PAM, value of inverter dc voltage can be considered as an additional degree of freedom by which the flexibility of such techniques would be increased maintaining the switching frequency. In the proposed SHM-SHE-PAM, the conventional equations are reformulated to obtain constant switching angles for a vast range of modulation index (ma) applied on a four-leg NPC inverter. Switching pulses of the three-phase legs and the fourth leg are calculated to mitigate the nontriplen harmonics and eliminate the triplen ones, respectively. Due to the unique switching angles valid in the whole range for ma, the calculation time and volume (storage capacity) are significantly reduced leading to a simpler controller implementable on a low-risk and cheap AVR chip. Experimental tests’ results of a four-leg NPC inverter as UPS application prove the good dynamic performance and accuracy of the proposed implemented switching technique in producing associated pulses for the inverter switches at very low frequency to mitigate/eliminate undesired harmonic orders from the output phase/line voltage waveforms without using bulky filters. This paper presents a harmonic elimination technique based on a three-level dodecagonal space vector structure for open-end winding induction motor (IM) drives with a single-dc supply. Advantages of dodecagonal space vector switching and multilevel inverters are achieved with a single-dc supply. A dc supply-fed three-level flying capacitor (FC) inverter feeds active power to one end of the IM winding terminals and H-bridge connected capacitors eliminate fifth- and seventh-order harmonics from the other end. A pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique is developed to switch the three-level dodecagonal space vectors and simultaneously control the H-bridge capacitors at 0.1445V\text{dc}. The fifth- and seventh-order harmonics are eliminated for the full modulation range of the three-level FC inverter, including the extreme 6-step operation. An increase in the linear modulation range has been achieved, resulting in improved dc bus utilization. Harmonic elimination is achieved by increasing switching frequency of the low-voltage capacitor connected H-bridge inverter; thus, switching frequency for the high-voltage dc supply-fed FC inverter is not increased. Using the proposed scheme, the instantaneous phase voltage never exceeds \frac23V\text{dc} (maximum phase voltage applied for hexagonal space vector structure) for which the machine windings are rated. This paper presents a new E-type module for asymmetrical multilevel inverters (MLIs) with reduced components. Each module produces 13 levels with four unequal dc sources and 10 switches. The design of the proposed module makes some preferable features with a better quality than similar modules such as the low number of semiconductors and dc sources and low switching frequency. Also, this module is able to create a negative level without any additional circuit such as an H-bridge, which causes reduction of voltage stress on switches. Cascade connection of the proposed structure leads to a modular topology with more levels and higher voltages. Selective harmonics elimination pulse width modulation (SHE-PWM) scheme is used to achieve high-quality output voltage with lower harmonics.
