In this paper, a single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) dc–dc converter is proposed. The significant feature of the proposed converter is feeding a constant power load in low-voltage side (LVS) port, where even feeding a variable load at LVS does not have any cross regulation to high-voltage side port with the desired approximation. Magnificently, both merits are obtained in open-loop manner, which is an outstanding characteristic in comparison with that of the existed converters. In this paper, soft commutation and soft switching of switches and diodes are investigated along with the aforementioned main novelty. Moreover, detailed theoretical analyses of the proposed SIDO dc–dc converter in continuous conduction mode are presented besides the comparisons with some other structures. In this paper, a series-capacitor-based interleaving buck power factor correction (PFC) converter is proposed, the intermediate energy storage capacitance of which is operated at discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM), and automatic power factor (PF) correction for this converter is obtained. Moreover, the voltage across the series capacitor of the proposed PFC converter is clamped at the input voltage, and thus peak voltage stress existed in the traditional DCVM buck PFC could be relieved. By effectively regulating the charge/discharge time for the series capacitor, ultrahigh step-down conversion ratio of the proposed converter is achieved, the conversion ratio of which is independent of the duty cycle and only related to the switching frequency and circuit parameters. Therefore, high PF can be obtained due to very narrow deadtime of the input current. Meanwhile, the proposed PFC converter can realize the soft turn-on of part power switch and soft turn-off of part power diodes. In addition, comparing with the traditional discontinuous inductor current mode PFC, the input current of the proposed PFC converter is continuous so that the peak value and root-mean-square value of input current can be reduced. The operational principle, performance analysis, and parameter design principle are given in this paper. The analysis results show that the PF and total harmonic distortion are also independent of the duty cycle. This paper proposes an “isolated soft switching current fed LCC-T resonant dc–dc converter for PV/fuel cell applications.” This converter is able to achieve zero voltage switching for front-end inverter switches and zero-current switching for voltage doubler diodes. The majority of dc–dc converters have compact capacitive (C) filter in output, but high harmonic currents through transformer makes them bulky. The proposed converter attempts to improve harmonic content through a transformer under wide load and input variations as well as it can significantly reduce required turns ratio of transformer to achieve required output voltage. For the above reasons, the proposed converter can offer better footprints and therefore it can be a potential candidate for PV/fuel cell applications. This paper presents basic operating principal, detailed analysis, control, and design of the proposed converter with the help of an example. This converter operates in two modes, i.e., constant duty cycle mode and constant frequency mode, depending on load demand, and is explained through operating curves. This paper describes a bipolar pulsed power supply for strategic mineral exploration. Depending on the operating conditions, the bipolar pulsed power supply is capable of delivering the required high voltage and low current or low voltage and high current when operated, respectively, in either the grounded dipole mode or the loop mode. Based on a 500-V 12.5-A unit module, series and parallel connections of four modules are configured to satisfy both the grounded dipole mode (2000 V) and the loop mode (50 A), respectively. A unit module comprising an LCC resonant converter and a full-bridge-based bipolar pulse-switching unit is designed. In order to achieve high power density, the leakage inductance of the transformer is used as a resonant inductor in place of an external inductor. Accordingly, the resonant tank parameters are designed to give the resonant current a trapezoidal shape to reduce conduction loss and provide high efficiency. In addition, a simple gate-driving algorithm that uses the repetitive short pulse to cover the frequency range from dc to 8 kHz is proposed to allow the compact design of a minimized gate transformer. In this paper, the detailed design of the resonant circuit and the transformer of a unit module is described, and the operation is verified through simulation and experimental results. Reduced switch active phase converters (APC) are cost-effective solutions for running three-phase loads from single-phase grids. This paper proposes a novel auxiliary-capacitor-based APC (AC-APC) for this application. The combination of the topological location of the auxiliary capacitor and the control of the AC-APC reduces current stress on the semiconductor devices. In this paper, a selection criterion for the optimal auxiliary capacitor value is formulated to reduce the device currents in such a way that the overall efficiency is enhanced. This paper presents a comparative analysis of converter volt-ampere (VA) rating and device power loss for conventional H-bridge active front-end and inverter-based topology, APC, and AC-APC. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed AC-APC, an experimental study is conducted on the APC and the AC-APC feeding a 3-hp three-phase induction motor. At a full load of $\text{2.5}\,\text{kW}$ and $\text{0.8 } \text{power factor}$ , the measured maximum efficiency of the AC-APC is $2\%$ higher than that of the APC. This paper introduces modeling and control of a cascaded flying capacitor bridge (CFCB) multilevel converter for a solid-state transformer. The finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is easy and simple to implement for many applications. However, the computational complexity increases with the increase in the number of switches. Furthermore, as the number of control variables increases, the weighting factors also increase. Thus, it is difficult to apply to a system with a large number of switches and variables to be controlled similar to a CFCB multilevel converter. In this paper, the proposed method divides variables such as current, dc-link voltage, and flying capacitor voltage into layers. The proposed method reduces the number of states to be considered in the control, which shortens the computational time and simplifies expansion of the flying capacitor bridge. In addition, since weighting factors are not used, there is no tradeoff between current quality and voltage quality, and there is no difficulty in selecting weighting factors. Algorithms that include a method for compensating for the distortion caused by the delay of the digital control system are also described. This paper proposes a new developed switched-capacitor converter to achieve high-voltage pulses with adjustable voltage level and frequency. The proposed topology generates repetitive high-voltage pulses by using low-voltage power supply with reduced number of components, including power semiconductors and capacitor. Therefore, a converter based on switched-capacitor units with high voltage gain and high efficiency can be achieved. Operation principles and design steps of the converter as well as comparative study with conventional converters are described in this paper. In this paper, a new nonisolated high step-down dc–dc converter with ultrahigh step-down conversion ratio is proposed. Advantages of the proposed converter are high step-down ratio, extended duty cycle, reduced switching losses by a converter operation under zero-voltage switching (ZVS) conditions, reduced reverse reco-very losses of diodes by achieved zero-current switching turn-off condition, and reduced voltage spikes by the inherent active-clamping structure of the converter. In this converter, series capacitors and coupled inductors have been used in power path to achieve the low voltage gain and extended duty cycle. By the inherent active-clamping structure of the proposed converter, the leakage inductance energy is totally recovered in the output; therefore, the high voltage spike across the semiconductor devices is suppressed. The switches of the proposed converter can operate under ZVS conditions, which cause reduced switching losses and improved efficiency. This paper presents three unidirectional step-up ac–dc converter topologies with voltage multiplication on their outputs. The first topology is the hybrid boost rectifier and the other two are novel bridgeless structures, all based on the integration of boost rectifier and the ladder switched-capacitor (SC) cell. The new hybrid structures provide high voltage gain with low voltage stress across the switches, high-power factor, and output voltage regulation. This paper presents the principle of operation, steady-state and dynamic analysis, design methodology, and experimental verification. A different approach is also presented for the design methodology of the SC cell and for the analysis of its influence on the dynamic model. Three 1000-W prototypes with a 220-V input voltage, 800-V output voltage, and 100-kHz switching frequency were designed to corroborate the theoretical study. The best efficiency was 97.1$\%$ in the proposed bridgeless versions and the voltage stress across the switches stands around 400 V. This paper proposes an analytical design procedure for the LLCL and the LCCL filters for grid integration of high-power voltage-source converters. The low switching frequency and stringent limits on grid-injected harmonics in high-power applications lead to large smoothing filters. In order to reduce the size and weight, high-order filters are already proposed and wise design procedures with the main goal of minimizing the overall filter size are being suggested. In this paper, the parameters of the LLCL and the LCCL filters are designed in the per-unit system to satisfy the requirements on the injected grid current and at the same time minimize the overall filter size through minimizing the total energy stored in the filter components. The series-resonant converter (SRC) has been used in several application and it recently became popular for smart transformers (STs). In this application, the efficiency and reliability are of paramount importance. Although many papers have addressed the design challenges to improve the converter efficiency, discussions about the reliability are still missing in the literature. In this context, this paper presents a design procedure focusing on the efficiency and reliability improvement of the SRC for ST application. High efficiency is achieved through the use of silicon-carbide MOSFETs, reducing conduction and switching losses, and the detail design procedure based on accurate losses modeling. High reliability is achieved through a fault-tolerant topology and reliability-oriented design of the resonant circuit passive components. A single-phase common-mode transformerless grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) converter, which is based on the integration of two stages, is proposed in this paper. Transformer elimination in grid-connected PV systems has many advantages. It not only reduces cost, size, and weight but also increases the complete system efficiency. Since there is no galvanic isolation between grid and PV array, a leakage current may appear due to the PV parasitic capacitance to the ground, if this is not taken into account in the converter design. This paper presents a dc/dc boost converter integrated with a full-bridge inverter. The integration of these two stages reduces the ground leakage current. The neutral line of the grid is directly connected to the negative terminal of the PV array, eliminating any possibility of leakage current in this terminal. Circuit analysis and design criteria of a two-phase bidirectional converter with high voltage gain are presented in this paper. The operating principle of the forward or reverse mode is similar to that of the conventional buck or boost converter. Compared with the conventional converter, the switch stresses can be reduced significantly depending on the operating region of the voltage ratio in the two-phase converter. The power losses can also be reduced due to the use of low-voltage rating switches. The derivate converters are discussed to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed topology. The back-to-back (BTB) converter is one of the most popular converter topologies for the control of electrical machines, power transmission systems, and power quality applications. The conventional cascade control structure is commonly used due to its simple design procedure and reliable operation. However, the bandwidth of the dc-link voltage controller has to be limited in order to avoid instability issues and be restrictive in high-performance applications. This paper presents a differential- and common-current (power)-based state-feedback control for BTB converters. This controller features a fast control of active and reactive powers, and a stiff regulation of the dc-link voltage. A theoretical analysis of the proposed controller along with a strategy for current limiting is presented. Its robustness was tested against variations of the filter parameters, the dc capacitance, the grid inductance, and the grid voltage values. This paper presents a novel switch current stress reduction technique for a single switch boost-flyback high step up dc–dc converter. Coupled inductor-based converters do not have a sufficiently higher inductance value of their windings. This creates current surge during transient and steady state, which in turn increases current stress at main switch. To compensate this difficulty in coupled inductor-based boost flyback converter, an inductor–diode parallel combination has been connected in series with the switch. This technique increases the effective inductance of the coupled inductor primary winding during switch turn-on operation and helps to reduce current stress. Steady-state operating principle with the proposed technique is analyzed in continuous conduction mode. The current reduction technique is discussed with a proper mathematical derivation. To verify theoretical findings, simulation study is carried out in MATLAB/Simulink R2014b. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are connected in a bank to meet the requirement of capacitance, voltage, and current rating for dc-link of power electronic converters. The performance of capacitor bank deteriorates with time due to the degradation of AECs in the bank. Further, each AEC in the bank degrades differently based on its core temperature, which in turn depends on the current and its equivalent series resistance (ESR). Therefore, health monitoring of a bank would require monitoring of individual AECs in the bank. However, extending the available literature on health monitoring of an AEC to the capacitor bank would require voltage/current sensors for individual AECs. To address the aforementioned issue, this paper suggests a method to assess the health of individual AECs online in the bank without using sensors for each AECs. The proposed method involves estimation of current through each capacitor, which is used to determine the core temperature by using a thermal model of AEC. The core temperature is used for estimation of ESR and capacitance of each capacitor using physics-of-failure based degradation model. For the consistent matching of the degradation model to the actual degradation of the capacitor, the coefficients of the model are sequentially updated. For updating, an algorithm based on extended Kalman filter is used. The nine-arm modular multilevel converter (9A-MMC) has been recently proposed as a reduced MMC topology variation for six-phase drive applications, with 25% reduction in the number of employed arms and associated components, compared to a standard dual three-phase MMC, however with a limited output voltage amplitude. This paper proposes a hybrid 9A-MMC comprised of half-bridge submodules (SMs) in both the upper and lower arms, and full-bridge SMs in the middle arms. By employing the negative-voltage state of the full-bridge SMs, the hybrid 9A-MMC avoids the limitations imposed on the dc-link voltage utilization, while achieving further reduction in the component count, compared to a standard 9A-MMC with identical half-bridge SMs. The operating principles of the proposed hybrid 9A-MMC are illustrated with mathematical analysis, whereas its characteristics are verified through both simulation and experimentation. A new transformerless bidirectional buck-boost converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter has a simple circuit structure, low component count, low voltage stress on the power transistors, and a wide voltage gain range. This makes it applicable in the energy storage charge/discharge systems, such as electric vehicles (EV), microgrids and nanogrids with energy storage units, and uninterruptible power supplies. In addition, synchronous rectification between the complementary transistors is employed to improve the converter efficiency. A comprehensive analysis of the steady-state operation, small-signal model, component parameters design, and efficiency analysis of the proposed converter operating in a continuous conduction mode is given. In this paper, several new coupled-inductor-based soft-switching dc–dc converters are proposed. These converters are obtained by changing the coupled branch of several existing dc–dc converters. Meanwhile they have similar characteristics to these existing converters, and provide more choices for the practical application. Then by applying an existing efficiency improvement method, which is used in the buck-type soft-switching converter, to all abovementioned converters, several new converters with efficiency improvement characteristics are obtained. This efficiency improvement method utilizes the low conduction performance of the transistor to reduce the loss. In addition, this method has the same control complexity to original topologies, because the auxiliary transistor has the same control timing to one of main transistors. The characteristic of new converters and efficiency improvement method are presented by analyzing two new topologies (boost-type converters). In this paper, a novel noncoupled inductor high voltage gain single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) is presented. The proposed converter has various advantages, such as lower voltage stress on the switches, noninverting output voltage, high efficiency, and high voltage gain. Also, the introduced converter has a continuous input current which makes it suitable for renewable energy and fuel cell applications. Moreover, high voltage gain is achieved without using any transformer and coupled inductor, thus there is not any voltage overshoot for the switches during the turn-off process. This effect allows low conduction losses by using lower voltage rating switches and also additional clamping circuit is not needed. The control system of the presented converter is simple and the converter can be easily controlled in continuous conduction mode mode operation. Because, the gating pulses for both of the switches are the same and wide output voltage range is achieved only by changing the duty cycle. Furthermore, the number of the components compared to the other noncoupled inductor, SEPIC-based converters which provide near voltage gain to the proposed converter, is reduced. This paper presents an approach for dealing with the control of five-level, diode-clamped rectifiers. The control of such converters is challenging, as voltage balancing among capacitors is not a trivial task. Some of the existing approaches that cope with this problem use specific modifications of one of the traditional modulation techniques, such as using redundant vectors in space vector modulation (SVM). The main feature of the proposed technique is that part of the modulation is considered in the system equations and, in this way, the voltage balance can be solved designing a specific controller for this problem. As a result, several levels are used within a switching period. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed approach hardly affects the control of active and reactive powers and total dc-link voltage in such a way that the well-known direct power control can be applied. As a consequence, the resultant modulation stage is simpler than other techniques based on, e.g., SVM. This paper presents a new approach to controlling and optimizing a single-stage boost-integrated full-bridge dc–dc converter for a stand-alone photovoltaic-battery-powered dc motor system by combining pulse-frequency modulation (PFM), pulsewidth modulation (PWM), and phase angle shift (PAS). Unlike most of the existing multiport dc–dc converters, which aim at regulating the output voltage (first- or second-quadrant operation), the dc motor load requires both voltage and current reversals (four-quadrant operation). The converter is able to perform three tasks simultaneously: maximum power point tracking (MPPT), battery charging/discharging, and driving the dc motor at variable speeds including bidirectional and stall motions. To achieve these control objectives, the boost inductor and the motor inductance operate in different modes such that PFM and PWM can be used to achieve MPPT and a wide motor voltage range, respectively. By properly adjusting the PAS of the duty cycles, the capacitor and battery rms current value can be reduced, while the operation of the converter remains unchanged, hence improving the conversion efficiency. In this paper, a new step-up dc–dc converter module that consists of three resonant submodules interconnecting with 1:1 turns ratio three-phase transformer and coupled current-fed voltage doubler modules is presented for medium voltage dc converter design in wind energy application. By utilizing step-up resonant circuits with three-phase transformer and combining it with a “multistring” inverter, the proposed circuit structure completely utilizes all the switching circuits to transfer power to the output. In addition, the proposed topology is able to achieve high voltage gain without using large turns ratio high frequency step-up transformers. Zero voltage switching turn-on and near zero current switching (ZCS) turn-off are maintained for all the switches. A modular 1.5 MW, 1 kV (dc-link), 20 kV (output) converter system is presented to validate the performance of the proposed circuit. Experimental results on a laboratory-scale 2.8 kW, 0.3 kV (dc-link), 6 kV (output), prototype are provided to highlight the merits of this work. Cascaded H-bridge (CHB) is a promising topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. CHB consists of low-power H-bridge modules in each phase, and these modules are connected in a cascade manner to achieve multilevel operation. However, CHB requires a phase-shifting transformer with multiple secondary windings to generate an isolated dc source for each module, and this requirement increases the overall system cost. In this paper, a series connection of low-power modules is employed to realize a new power converter called a series-connected multilevel converter. Each phase of the proposed topology requires a single isolated dc source. Hence, the required number of secondary windings is considerably reduced. This approach also minimizes the complexity and cost of the overall system. The operation of the proposed topology is presented by using three-level neutral point clamped modules in each phase. Model predictive control (MPC) is employed to control the dc-bus capacitor voltage and output currents of the proposed topology. A discrete-time mathematical model of the proposed topology is also developed to predict the future behavior of control variables. In this paper, a fully soft-switched bidirectional dc–dc converter is proposed. All semiconductor devices are soft switched, while its control circuit remains pulsewidth modulated. This condition is achieved only by one auxiliary switch. So, the proposed topology has less complexity in comparison with other similar structures. The energy conversion through the proposed topology during buck and boost modes is highly efficient due to achieved soft-switching condition. This paper proposes two coupled-inductors-based Z-source networks, called the modified series and tapped switched-coupled-inductors quasi-Z-source networks (mSSCL-qZSN and mTSCL-qZSN, respectively). These networks offer high voltage gains with less-than-unity winding turn ratios $(n < {\text{1)}}$ , resulting in a reduced inductive element size. Other advantages include a less number of active components and their lower ratings and a higher efficiency. In addition, a lower magnetic core size is required for the proposed ZSNs due to the lower peak magnetizing current. In this paper, a generic framework for a rectifier to continuously take part in the regulation of grid voltage and frequency is proposed. It can automatically change the power consumed to support the grid, without affecting the normal operation of the load. Such a rectifier has a built-in storage port, in addition to the normal ac and dc ports. The flexibility required by the ac port to support the grid is provided by the storage port without affecting the dc port. The grid support of the ac port is achieved through the recently proposed universal droop controller (UDC). A dc-bus voltage controller cascaded to the UDC is proposed to regulate the dc-bus voltage of the storage port within a wide range so as to provide the flexibility needed, while the dc-port voltage is maintained constant. An illustrative example is presented with the recently proposed $\theta$ -converter, which consists of three ports with only four switches. This paper presents a three-phase open-end winding induction motor drive. The drive consists of a three-phase induction machine with open stator phase windings and dual-bridge inverter supplied from a single dc voltage source. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, a floating capacitor bank is used for the second of the dual bridges. The capacitor voltage is regulated using redundant switching states at half of the main dc-link voltage. This particular voltage ratio (2:1) is used to create a multilevel output voltage waveform with three levels. A modified modulation scheme is used to improve the waveform quality of this dual inverter. This paper also compares the losses in the dual-inverter system in contrast with a single-sided three-level neutral point clamped converter. Finally, detailed simulation and experimental results are presented for the motor drive operating as an open-loop v /f controlled motor drive and as a closed-loop field-oriented motor controller. In this paper, a high step up converter consisting of an integrated quadratic-boost converter and a voltage doubler is proposed. The integration of the quadratic-boost converter makes the system easier to lift up its voltage gain through slightly increasing the duty ratio of the single switch. The voltage doubler further increases the voltage gain of the system as the turn ratio rises. The voltage stresses on the switch and the diodes are decreased for such cascaded topology. Different operation modes are analyzed and mathematical analysis of the converter is presented in detail. The leakage inductance contributes to realizing zero current switching of the diodes in the second boost stage and the doubler and the energy can be recycled to the load. In recent years, modular multilevel converter (MMC) is considered for medium-voltage variable speed drives (VSD) due to its modularity and higher reliability. However, the major drawback of the MMC-based VSD is the higher capacitor ripple voltage at lower operating speeds. In literature, this ripple voltage is reduced by injecting a high-frequency circulating current into each arm. This additional circulating current increases the overall current rating of the devices, inductors, and capacitors. Alternatively, the capacitor ripple voltage can be reduced at the lower output frequency by reducing the dc-bus voltage. This paper proposes a new configuration using a multipulse diode-bridge rectifier to reduce the dc-bus voltage when the drive is operated at lower speeds. Therefore, the capacitor ripple voltage decreases without injecting any circulating current. In addition, a new technique is proposed to maintain the peak-to-peak value of the submodule capacitor ripple voltage constant at near-zero speed. The proposed converter with 24-pulse rectifier configuration is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink, and the experimental validation is carried out on a prototype with 12-pulse rectifier. In this paper, a new modified single-switch single-ended primary inductor converter (MS2-SEPIC)-based high step-up dc–dc converter is presented. The proposed topology uses the coupled-inductor (CL) technique and a voltage tripler rectifier, which results in a high voltage gain for the converter. Here, the switching loss has been reduced significantly owing to the quasi-resonance operation of the circuit created by the leakage inductance of the CL along with circuit capacitors. This paper investigates robust control strategies for wind energy conversion systems with variable-speed permanent magnet synchronous generators, which are integrated into the grid to provide reliable, secure, and efficient electrical power. A three-phase grid-side converter without a grid transformer is connected to the grid using an LCL filter with low resistive losses. In these working conditions, an instantaneous power proportional integral (PI) controller for the outer voltage-loop in the grid-side converter is used to regulate the DC-link voltage and generate the required currents for the inner current-loop in the grid-side converter. Two integral-type terminal sliding-mode controllers are proposed to control the active and reactive powers exchanged between the converter and the grid. The switching signals in the controllers are softened to attenuate chattering. The time-varying gains in the controllers are constructed to reduce control energy wastage and avoid overestimation of the boundaries of system uncertainties. A 1-MHz-modified single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) circuit is presented in this paper as an LED driver for automotive headlights. On the basis of traditional SEPIC, only a diode and two capacitors are added; therefore, the circuit structure is relatively simple and the volume is relatively small. High step-up capability is obtained with moderate duty cycle. Compared with traditional step-up circuit such as boost, low-voltage stress is gained which is beneficial to device selection. Zero-voltage switching is achieved at the same time to reduce switching loss. Planar inductors are used with the advantages of low profile and good thermal characteristic. Operational principle and parameters design process are introduced in detail. A 36-W prototype has been designed to demonstrate theoretical analysis. Switched-capacitor converter (SCC) featuring high efficiency and power density has attracted industry interest, but weak output voltage regulation hinders its application. This paper presents an optimized phase-shift (PS) control strategy for a bridge modular SCC, utilized in energy storage system, to obtain continuous conversion ratio and high-efficiency operation. By employing a small inductor as current buffer, the control strategy could be implemented to regulate output voltage conveniently with excellent steady and dynamic performance in step-down mode as well as step-up mode. Most importantly, the high-efficiency operation mechanism never reported before is revealed here. Correspondingly, the active circumfluence could be controlled through optimizing the range of PS time, which will avoid the loss in circuit self. Meanwhile, the soft-switching conditions of all the switches are comprehensively analyzed and soft-switching operations are achieved according to the logic timing control of the power devices, improving efficiency further. In this paper, a novel buck–boost converter with low electric stress on components and negative output voltage is proposed. The operational principle, steady-state analysis, and small-signal modeling of the proposed buck–boost converter in continuous conduction mode are presented. Comparisons among another five buck–boost converters and the proposed buck–boost converter are presented. It is found that the proposed converter's voltage gain is smaller than the other converters’ in step-down mode. Also, based upon the comparisons among the same kind and same number of components, the voltage and current stresses on the power switch of the proposed buck–boost converter are less than or equal to those of the comparative converters, and the voltage stress on the charge pump capacitor and the switching device power rating of the proposed buck–boost converter are always lower than those of other comparative converters. The efficiency of the proposed buck–boost converter is highest among those converters having the same number of elements. These advantages make component selection for the proposed converter much easier, and it can be used directly in applications needing a negative voltage source. Resonant converters with capacitive output filters are quite popular for their higher voltage gain and compact designs. But the majority of the converters underutilize the transformer as they are subjected to discontinuous currents. This discontinuous current possesses huge current ripples that produce huge core losses and aggravate the temperature rise of the transformer. This often leads to saturation of the transformer. This paper presents an LCC-T resonant dc–dc converter with a capacitive output filter operating all switches in the zero current switching (ZCS) switching mode and whose transformer current is a continuous sinusoidal with minimum stress on resonant tank components. This is achieved by bringing the transformer in series to a resonant inductor. The proposed converter is simulated in power simulation (PSIM) 11.0.1. The dc-link capacitors are important components that tend to be one of the weakest part of power converters. Thus, it is necessary to monitor the aging parameters of dc-link capacitors in valuable power electronic systems. This paper proposes a simple yet effective variable electrical network (VEN) condition monitoring method for dc-link capacitors in three-phase pulsewidth modulation (PWM) ac–dc–ac power converters. The capacitance (C) and equivalent series resistance of dc-link capacitors are estimated through the designed VEN unit during the discharging process. This VEN method does not need the current sensor or injecting signals into the control loop. The above property is favorable for the hardware and controller design. Besides, the designed monitoring circuit can be an external unit or a built-in unit which offers a flexible solution for electrical devices. When the designed VEN is used as an external unit, neither the hardware design nor the programs in the controller needs to change, which is practical and economic for electrical devices in use. Conventional two-level as well as multilevel voltage-source-inverter topologies with a hexagonal voltage-space vector structure generate low-order harmonics in the machine terminal voltages when operated beyond the linear modulation range in variable speed drive application. Progressing from hexagonal to a higher sided polygonal voltage-space-vector structure (VSVS) suppresses significant low-order harmonics throughout the modulation range. In addition, the linear modulation range will also be enhanced very near to the base speed. In this paper, for the first time, the generation of a multilevel 24-sided VSVS using a single dc source for induction-motor drives is proposed. A cascaded topology with a dc-source-fed flying-capacitor inverter and two low-voltage capacitor-fed H-bridge cells forms the power circuit. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become the most promising converter topology for medium- and high-power applications. In this paper, a sliding mode control (SMC) based method is proposed for the MMC. Based on analysis of the system dynamics under the proposed control method, relations among control parameters and their validity conditions are obtained, which provide a guidance for systematic controller design. Compared with the conventional proportional-integral based method, the proposed SMC-based method provides comparable steady state performance and faster dynamic responses, without compromising the computational effort or requirement for precise system model. Simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment are carried out to validate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed control method in the context of an HVdc transmission system. It is difficult for a single converter to handle the high voltages involved in dc–dc conversion with a high-voltage input bus. Input-series–output-parallel (ISOP) technology can be used to solve this problem. In this paper, an input voltage sharing control scheme based on peak current (IVSPC) control to guarantee power balance between the modules of the ISOP system is studied. Owing to the peak current control, the output voltage of the system has a good ability to suppress input bus perturbations, and it exhibits good dynamic characteristics even when the input voltage changes significantly with a high slope. The IVSPC control method has two kinds of loops: a common output voltage regulation (OVR) loop and individual input voltage sharing (IVS) loops. The OVR loop provides the same current reference component for all modules, whereas the IVS loops provide different components. The peak current reference signal for each module is the sum of the reference components from the OVR and IVS loops. In this paper, a family of automatic interleaved Dickson switched-capacitor converters (AIDSCC) and its zero-voltage switching (ZVS) resonant configuration are proposed. Different from the traditional Dickson switched-capacitor converter, the AIDSCC has symmetrical configuration with the features of automatic interleaved input current, small output voltage ripple, and lower peak capacitor voltage stress. To improve the line regulation capability, one small resonant inductor is inserted and two bulky capacitor banks are replaced by two much smaller resonant capacitors, forming the resonant AIDSCC. The transistors are ZVS turned on and diodes are zero-current switching turned off by operating above the resonance. With frequency modulation within a reasonable range, the voltage-gain range of the resonant AIDSCC is expanded significantly, while sacrificing the maximum efficiency due to the higher conduction loss. This paper presents a novel single-phase multicell converter for ac–dc power conversion, which is formed by a series connection of several full-bridge converter stages through passive components. The proposed topology employs a simple control scheme based on the carrier-based sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation technique. Detailed design procedure of the passive filter components are analyzed and discussed. An efficient optimization method based on a differential evolution algorithm is utilized to optimize the filter parameters. Considering the filter structure, active damping is introduced in the control scheme to improve the stability of the overall system, which is later verified by experiments. The systematic design approach of the controller parameter is also highlighted, focusing a specific set of goals. This paper presents a fast fuzzy logic control algorithm for a Takagi–Sugeno–Kang fuzzy controller, which is applied to integrated \textLED drivers with the purpose of getting a good dynamic response and the reduction in the low-frequency (120 Hz) ripple. The algorithm uses the high-speed mathematical engine of a digital signal controller \text(DSC) that is capable to achieve fast multiplications during a common one-cycle instruction. Therefore, the execution time of the controller is improved with the use of a \textDSC. A scaling procedure is included in the program in order to use and to improve the accuracy of the multiplications and divisions in the \textDSC mathematical engine. A low-range \textDSC was used to program the proposed controller; therefore, the cost is affordable for \textLED driver applications. In this paper, a self-oscillating soft-switched converter for light-emitting-diode (LED) driver application is presented. In the proposed converter, the self-oscillation conditions are provided with a low number of additional components, and this converter provides a zero-current switching (ZCS) condition for instant switch turn-OFF. This converter does not need additional output current feedback because the output current changes only 10% when the output voltage changes by 33%. The self-oscillating part of this converter applies three low-power BJT and guarantees a soft-switching condition. The proposed self-oscillating control circuit can be implemented with a low cost since it does not need any IC and power supply for the control circuit. The proposed self-oscillating circuit detects the proper moment to turn the switch OFF under the ZCS condition. In order to justify the validity of theoretical analysis, the results of the implemented prototype for driving an LED string are presented. The measured power factor of the prototype shows that, although the input current of the converter is not sinusoidal, this converter can meet the IEC61000-3-2 standard at an operating power of less than 25 W, in addition to having a simple structure and achieving the robust ZCS condition. Delta-channel modular multilevel converter (MMC) proved successful for zero/low-fundamental-frequency operation without injecting common-mode voltage. However, its application in a medium-voltage variable-speed motor drive is not verified. This paper develops a variable-speed motor drive system based on a delta-channel MMC. The converter power losses together with the compensation strategies are analyzed, and accordingly the submodule capacitor voltage controls are elaborated. The converter controls cascaded with the advanced motor control form the entire control scheme for the drive system. The system performances are tested based on a 4160-V 1-MW simulation model and 208-V 5-kW experimental setup. The results show that the delta-channel MMC along with the proposed control algorithm performs satisfactorily in a driving motor from standstill to a rated speed even under rated torque condition. Multilevel cascade H-bridge (CHB) converters are one of the promising solutions for medium- and large-scale grid-connected photovoltaic power plants. However, there is a lack of a complete study about their operation during voltage sags. This paper proposes a flexible control strategy for the operation of photovoltaic grid-connected CHB inverters during unbalanced voltage sags. The key novelty is that the proposed strategy is able to inject both active and reactive powers to the grid with either balanced or unbalanced currents, while ensuring that all dc-link capacitor voltages remain balanced. The simulation and experimental evaluations of a 9-kVA grid-connected seven-level CHB illustrate and validate the performance of the proposed strategy for the operation of the grid-connected CHB converter during different unbalanced voltage sags. Microinverters operating into the single-phase grid from new energy source with low-voltage output face the challenges of efficiency bottleneck and twice-line-frequency variation. This paper proposed a multilevel inverter based on bridge modular switched-capacitor (BMSC) circuits with its superiority in conversion efficiency and power density. The topology is composed of dc–dc and dc–ac stages with independent control for each stage, aiming to improve system stability and simplify the control method. The BMSC dc–dc stage, which can be expanded to synthesize more levels, not only features multilevel voltage gain but also partially replaces the original bulk input capacitor and functions as an active energy buffer to enhance power-decoupling ability between dc and ac sides. In dc–ac stage, the control strategy of optimized unipolar frequency doubling sine-wave pulse width modulation is proposed to improve the quality of output waveform. Meanwhile, the multilevel voltage phase has been optimized to further reduce the power loss. Finally, a prototype has been built and tested. This paper presents a new insertion index generation method to control modular multilevel converter's (MMC) topology. Unlike classical closed-loop methods, where the sum of all measured capacitor voltages per arm is used in the generation process of insertion indices, the proposed method uses available leg average voltage, i.e., the arithmetic mean of per leg available upper and lower arm voltages. Full mathematical development of available arm voltage ripple expressions is presented. Impact of the insertion method on arm voltages driving input and output currents is thoroughly evaluated and discussed. The proposed method inherently stabilizes arm stored energy; thus, no additional control loops are required to achieve regulation of arms energy difference. Moreover, the number of measured signals to be fed back to a high-level controller is reduced to half. Voltage balance control of dc capacitors is the key problem of multilevel diode-clamped converters (DCCs). In this paper, a novel hybrid voltage balance method is proposed for five-level DCCs. First, to balance the upper or lower two capacitors, a novel flying-capacitor-based voltage balance circuit (VBC) is proposed, and the time-domain average model of the VBC is established. Then a state-machine-based control strategy is developed to balance capacitor voltages as well as to limit overcurrent of inductors in a transition process. To keep the midpoint voltage stable, a zero-sequence injection method is proposed, which inherently ensures the improved modulation signals locate within the linear modulation ranges. With the flying capacitor transferring energy between dc capacitors, the device voltage stresses of the VBC are equalized, and the steady-state current ripples of the inductors are much smaller than those of the conventional chopper-based VBCs, which can reduce the volume and weight of the inductor. Simulation and experimental results for both inverter and rectifier operations prove that the proposed hybrid voltage balance method can balance dc capacitors of five-level DCCs in both steady states and transition states, and the inductor currents of VBCs can also be restricted within safe ranges. This paper proposes a modular isolated dc–dc converter, based on the input-series and output-series association of the full-bridge PWM dc–dc converter with capacitive filter. The main attribute of the proposed architecture is its ability to provide self-balance of the input and output voltages across the individual converters, without voltage loop control scheme, both in the steady-state and transient operations. Circuit operation, theoretical analysis, and modeling are included in this paper, along with experimental results taken from a laboratory prototype with four modules, 1600-Vdc total input voltage, 1600-Vdc total output voltage, 4-kW output power, and 40-kHz switching frequency.
