This paper presents three unidirectional step-up ac–dc converter topologies with voltage multiplication on their outputs. The first topology is the hybrid boost rectifier and the other two are novel bridgeless structures, all based on the integration of boost rectifier and the ladder switched-capacitor (SC) cell. The new hybrid structures provide high voltage gain with low voltage stress across the switches, high-power factor, and output voltage regulation. This paper presents the principle of operation, steady-state and dynamic analysis, design methodology, and experimental verification. A different approach is also presented for the design methodology of the SC cell and for the analysis of its influence on the dynamic model. Three 1000-W prototypes with a 220-V input voltage, 800-V output voltage, and 100-kHz switching frequency were designed to corroborate the theoretical study. The best efficiency was 97.1$\%$ in the proposed bridgeless versions and the voltage stress across the switches stands around 400 V. In this paper, a voltage sensorless controller is developed for a two-switch single-phase rectifier that involves power factor correction and active pulsating power buffering without electrolytic capacitors. While a two-switch rectifier normally requires four sensed signals for control, only one current sensor is required in this proposal, thereby offering advantages such as low cost, high compactness, isolation between control and power circuits, and improved reliability. While the basic operating principle follows that of a conventional voltage sensorless controller for single-switch converters, several critical design considerations are the key to the success of the implementation which is explained in detail. For photovoltaic applications, the flyback microinverter with pseudo-dc-link is popular as a simple topology but brings large transformer turns ratio and thus large leakage inductance, which would deteriorate the converter efficiency. To solve this issue, based on the nonisolated pseudo-dc-link structure, this paper proposed a hybrid boost–flyback/flyback (BF/F) microinverter. This new topology is operated at the BF mode for the most segment of a half grid cycle and the F mode for the rest. During the BF mode, high voltage gain with low voltage stress is easily available in minimized transformer turns ratio. Besides, the leakage energy is recycled and the turn-off voltage spike of the main switch is clamped, as a result of a passive snubber inherently contained in this mode. Given that the BF mode is lack of step-down function, the F mode is developed to regulate the output voltage even for values lower than the input voltage. The operation and characteristic of the hybrid BF/F microinverter in boundary conduction mode are analyzed in detail, and the mathematical expression of reference current is derived theoretically to guarantee high power quality. This paper presents a new approach to controlling and optimizing a single-stage boost-integrated full-bridge dc–dc converter for a stand-alone photovoltaic-battery-powered dc motor system by combining pulse-frequency modulation (PFM), pulsewidth modulation (PWM), and phase angle shift (PAS). Unlike most of the existing multiport dc–dc converters, which aim at regulating the output voltage (first- or second-quadrant operation), the dc motor load requires both voltage and current reversals (four-quadrant operation). The converter is able to perform three tasks simultaneously: maximum power point tracking (MPPT), battery charging/discharging, and driving the dc motor at variable speeds including bidirectional and stall motions. To achieve these control objectives, the boost inductor and the motor inductance operate in different modes such that PFM and PWM can be used to achieve MPPT and a wide motor voltage range, respectively. By properly adjusting the PAS of the duty cycles, the capacitor and battery rms current value can be reduced, while the operation of the converter remains unchanged, hence improving the conversion efficiency. In this paper, an electrolytic capacitor-less ac–dc light-emitting diode (LED) driver, consisting of a power factor correction (PFC) converter and a buck/boost bidirectional converter, is investigated. The buck/boost bidirectional converter is connected in parallel with the output of the PFC converter and serves to absorb the second harmonic current in the PFC output current, leaving only a dc component to drive the LEDs. This paper proposes an adaptive voltage control scheme for the storage capacitor in the buck/boost bidirectional converter to make the storage capacitor voltage adaptively decrease as the load becomes lighter. Hence, the power losses of the buck/boost bidirectional converter could be reduced at light load. Experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. A quasi-Z-source modular cascaded converter (qZS-MCC) is proposed for dc integration of high-power photovoltaic (PV) systems. The qZS-MCC comprises series-connected front-end isolated qZS half-bridge (HB) dc–dc converter submodules (SMs). With the front-end isolation, the qZS-MCC achieves high-voltage dc capability, while maintaining modularity and PV panel grounded. The post-stage qZS-HB handles the PV voltage and power flows, dc-link voltage balance, and output-series power integration. Whereas, the front-end isolation converters of all SMs perform a constant duty cycle, lowing the control complexity. There is no double-line-frequency power flowing through the dc-side PV panels, qZS inductors, and qZS capacitors in the qZS-MCC, so small qZS impedance is possible compared to the existing qZS cascaded multilevel inverter. The configuration, operating principle, power loss evaluation, and passive components design of the proposed system are investigated in this part of the paper. The interleaved bidirectional buck–boost converter dual active half-bridge (IBBC-DAHB) dc–dc converter consists of two converters IBBC and DAHB and a coupled inductor. The IBBC-DAHB converter has significant features such as low ripple current at the low-voltage side, low current stress on the input inductors, voltage stress across the switches less than the high-voltage side, high voltage gain, and zero-voltage soft switching. The converter offers high efficiency using phase-shift modulation when it operates at a nominal design operating point. However, the efficiency decreases due to high circulating current, high current stress, and limited soft-switching range when the source and load voltages deviate from their nominal values. This paper employs both duty cycle and phase-shift modulation methods to improve the above mentioned shortcomings using voltage matching for the DAHB converter. The proposed converter is analyzed and a 500-W experimental prototype with 40–60 V input voltage and 400 V output voltage under 100 kHz switching frequency is implemented to verify the theoretical results. The maximum efficiency of 97.15% is achieved at 60 V and 400 W. A flat efficiency characteristic for the converter is derived by the proposed control method, where the efficiency at 20% of nominal load is 91% and much higher than the phase-shift control, which is 70.8%. In this paper, an input-series flyback converter with the coupled-inductor-based passive snubber is proposed, where the input-series converter is based on transformer integration, and the passive snubber is composed of inductors, capacitors, and diodes. The inductors of the snubber in various series modules are made on a common magnetic core, and the coupled-inductor scheme is adopted. With the help of the coupled inductor, active input voltage sharing of the input-series converter can also be achieved after the switches are turned off, and voltage sharing of the switch in each series module can be ensured, which overcome the shortcomings of the existing input-series flyback converter. Active voltage sharing processes caused by the coupled inductor are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the design guideline of the passive snubber is discussed. Finally, the experimental study has been done on a 1500 Vdc/60 W laboratory-made prototype composed of three flyback series modules, and the feasibility of the proposed method and the theoretical analysis is verified by the experimental results. Due to the nonlinear characteristics of a photovoltaic (PV) array, its regulation is highly dependent on the operating point. Focusing on a dc–dc boost converter, this paper first shows how the PV voltage and inductor current controls are affected by the PV array. It then proposes to emulate an impedance virtually connected to the PV array, making it possible to greatly improve the control robustness. Thanks to the proposed strategy, the crossover frequency variation for the whole operating range is reduced from 42 times for the traditional control to 3.5 times when emulating parallel resistance or to 1.4 times when emulating series and parallel resistances, all with simple implementation. This paper investigates robust control strategies for wind energy conversion systems with variable-speed permanent magnet synchronous generators, which are integrated into the grid to provide reliable, secure, and efficient electrical power. A three-phase grid-side converter without a grid transformer is connected to the grid using an LCL filter with low resistive losses. In these working conditions, an instantaneous power proportional integral (PI) controller for the outer voltage-loop in the grid-side converter is used to regulate the DC-link voltage and generate the required currents for the inner current-loop in the grid-side converter. Two integral-type terminal sliding-mode controllers are proposed to control the active and reactive powers exchanged between the converter and the grid. The switching signals in the controllers are softened to attenuate chattering. The time-varying gains in the controllers are constructed to reduce control energy wastage and avoid overestimation of the boundaries of system uncertainties. Switched-capacitor converter (SCC) featuring high efficiency and power density has attracted industry interest, but weak output voltage regulation hinders its application. This paper presents an optimized phase-shift (PS) control strategy for a bridge modular SCC, utilized in energy storage system, to obtain continuous conversion ratio and high-efficiency operation. By employing a small inductor as current buffer, the control strategy could be implemented to regulate output voltage conveniently with excellent steady and dynamic performance in step-down mode as well as step-up mode. Most importantly, the high-efficiency operation mechanism never reported before is revealed here. Correspondingly, the active circumfluence could be controlled through optimizing the range of PS time, which will avoid the loss in circuit self. Meanwhile, the soft-switching conditions of all the switches are comprehensively analyzed and soft-switching operations are achieved according to the logic timing control of the power devices, improving efficiency further. In this paper, a novel buck–boost converter with low electric stress on components and negative output voltage is proposed. The operational principle, steady-state analysis, and small-signal modeling of the proposed buck–boost converter in continuous conduction mode are presented. Comparisons among another five buck–boost converters and the proposed buck–boost converter are presented. It is found that the proposed converter's voltage gain is smaller than the other converters’ in step-down mode. Also, based upon the comparisons among the same kind and same number of components, the voltage and current stresses on the power switch of the proposed buck–boost converter are less than or equal to those of the comparative converters, and the voltage stress on the charge pump capacitor and the switching device power rating of the proposed buck–boost converter are always lower than those of other comparative converters. The efficiency of the proposed buck–boost converter is highest among those converters having the same number of elements. These advantages make component selection for the proposed converter much easier, and it can be used directly in applications needing a negative voltage source. This paper proposes a medium-/high-voltage high-power hybrid modular dc–dc converter to interconnect two different dc-voltage levels in medium-/high-voltage dc grids. The converter consists of half-bridge submodules (SMs) rated at a moderate voltage level, i.e., series connection of semiconductor devices is avoided while connecting two high dc-voltage levels. The proposed architecture provides self-balancing operation, i.e., unlike conventional modular converters, no need for capacitor voltage measurement, which enhances the system reliability and simplicity. Sequential charging/discharging of SMs capacitors is adopted in the proposed approach to ensure a self-balanced operation. The proposed architecture can provide a high conversion ratio as well as power transfer in both directions, i.e., bidirectional dc–dc converter. Detailed illustration of the proposed approach operational concept, design, and overall control system is presented. The dc–dc modular multilevel converter (MMC), derived from the ac–dc MMC, is an attractive converter topology for interconnection of medium-/high-voltage dc grids. The dc–dc MMC generates an ac voltage component in each arm to drive an ac circulating current for maintaining the energy balance of its submodule capacitors. The power transfer capability of the dc–dc MMC and the amplitude of the ac circulating current are closely coupled with the available arm ac voltage headroom. As the voltage conversion ratio of the dc–dc MMC deviates from 0.5, the power transfer capability of the converter diminishes. This paper proposes an enhanced closed-loop control strategy, which increases the power transfer capability and at the same time reduces the ac circulating current of the dc–dc MMC. Performance and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy are demonstrated by simulation studies in the MATLAB/Simulink as well as experiments conducted on a laboratory prototype. For a single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) dc–dc converter operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM), load variation of one output will affect the voltage of the other output, i.e., there exists cross regulation between its two outputs. To suppress the cross regulation of the SIDO dc–dc converter operating in CCM, a novel ripple based control technique, called capacitor current ripple (CCR) control technique, is proposed in this paper. The operation principle of the SIDO CCM buck converter and the proposed CCR control technique are presented. The small signal model of the CCR-controlled SIDO CCM buck converter is established by the state space averaging method. Bode plots based on small signal model show that the proposed CCR-controlled SIDO CCM buck converter significantly reduces cross regulation and improves the transient performance compared with the peak current mode controlled SIDO CCM buck converter. In addition, the effect of the variation of loads on the stability of the proposed CCR-controlled SIDO CCM buck converter is analyzed by eigenvalues analysis. This paper presents an interleaved converter that benefits the coupled inductor and built-in transformer voltage multiplier cell (VMC). Compared with the other converters with only a built-in transformer or only a coupled inductor, the combination of these techniques gives an extra degree of freedom to increase the voltage gain. The VMC is composed of the windings of the built-in transformer and coupled inductors, capacitors, and diodes. The voltage stress of MOSFETs is clamped at low values and can be controlled via the turns ratio of the built-in transformer and coupled inductor that increases the design flexibility. Moreover, the energy of the leakage inductances, is recycled to the clamp capacitors which avoids high voltage spikes across MOSFETs. In addition, the current falling rate of the diodes is controlled by the leakage inductances, and the reverse current recovery problem is alleviated. Meanwhile, due to the interleaved structure of the proposed converter, the input current ripple is minimized and the current stress of the power devices is decreased. All of these factors improve the efficiency of the proposed converter in high-current and high-voltage applications. In this paper, a novel integrated interleaved dual-mode time-sharing inverter (IIDMI) is proposed for grid-tied transformerless photovoltaic (PV) applications. While the dual-mode time-sharing conversion technique ensures minimum losses, the IIDMI also retains the advantages of interleaved topologies, such as low total harmonic distortion of the ac current with reduced filtering requirements, increased power density, and reduced current and thermal stresses of power devices. The leakage current problem, which is a main concern with the transformerless PV inverters, is solved by increasing the frequency of the main side band of the common-mode voltage above the resonance frequency of the common-mode impedance, while avoiding high switching losses. The current control, especially at transitions between the buck and the boost modes of operation, is highly improved by utilizing a fast-response deadbeat control scheme. This paper proposes a novel nonisolated single-input dual-output three-level dc–dc converter (SIDO-TLC) appropriate for medium- and high-voltage applications. The SIDO-TLC is an integration of the three-level buck and boost converters, whose output voltages are regulated simultaneously. Reducing voltage stress across semiconductor devices, improving efficiency, and reducing inductors size are among the main merits of the new topology. Moreover, due to the considerably reduced volume of the step-down filter capacitor, a small film capacitor can be used instead, whose advantages are lower equivalent series resistance and a longer lifespan. A closed-loop control system has been designed based on a small-signal model derivation in order to regulate the output voltages along with the capacitors’ voltage balancing. In order to verify the theoretical and simulation results, a 300-W prototype was built and experimented. The results prove the aforementioned advantages of the SIDO-TLC, and the high effectiveness of the balancing control strategy. In this paper, a three-level quasi-switched boost T-type inverter (3L qSBT2I) is proposed. A new pulse-width modulated (PWM) control method is presented to reduce the inductor current ripple of the qSBT2 I. In the introduced PWM technique, the shoot-through duty cycle is maintained constant to keep the modulation index as high as possible. Then, the only control parameters of the qSBT2I are the duty cycles of the two additional switches. By controlling the duty cycles of the two additional switches, the voltage gain of the proposed qSBT2 I can be improved to a value larger than that of the conventional 3L impedance source inverters. The steady-state analysis, operating principles, and comparisons with the impedance source-based 3L inverters are presented. A 1-kW prototype is constructed to verify the operating principle of the 3L qSBT2I. Voltage balance control of dc capacitors is the key problem of multilevel diode-clamped converters (DCCs). In this paper, a novel hybrid voltage balance method is proposed for five-level DCCs. First, to balance the upper or lower two capacitors, a novel flying-capacitor-based voltage balance circuit (VBC) is proposed, and the time-domain average model of the VBC is established. Then a state-machine-based control strategy is developed to balance capacitor voltages as well as to limit overcurrent of inductors in a transition process. To keep the midpoint voltage stable, a zero-sequence injection method is proposed, which inherently ensures the improved modulation signals locate within the linear modulation ranges. With the flying capacitor transferring energy between dc capacitors, the device voltage stresses of the VBC are equalized, and the steady-state current ripples of the inductors are much smaller than those of the conventional chopper-based VBCs, which can reduce the volume and weight of the inductor. Simulation and experimental results for both inverter and rectifier operations prove that the proposed hybrid voltage balance method can balance dc capacitors of five-level DCCs in both steady states and transition states, and the inductor currents of VBCs can also be restricted within safe ranges. This paper presents a transformerless inverter topology, which is capable of simultaneously solving leakage current and pulsating power issues in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. Without adding any additional components to the system, the leakage current caused by the PV-to-ground parasitic capacitance can be bypassed by introducing a common-mode (CM) conducting path to the inverter. The resulting ground leakage current is therefore well controlled to be below the regulation limit. Furthermore, the proposed inverter can also eliminate the well-known double-line-frequency pulsating power that is inherent in single-phase PV systems. By properly injecting CM voltages to the output filter capacitors, the pulsating power can be decoupled from the dc-link. Therefore, it is possible to use long-lifetime film capacitors instead of electrolytic capacitors to improve the reliability of the PV system. The mechanism of leakage current suppression and the closed-loop control of pulsating power decoupling are discussed in this paper in detail. Single-stage power-factor-corrected (S2PFC) power supplies usually suffer from high voltage stress, due to lack of control on the intermediate bus capacitor voltage. In the past, analysis of such voltage stress was mostly based on steady-state condition without providing sufficient explanation during the transient circuit operation. This paper revisits the problem at circuit level and reports that the root cause is due to the inherent negative current feedback property of the output inductor or the transformer operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). Based on the finding, this paper further proposes a new approach to reducing the voltage stress by adding an auxiliary circuit branch to existing S2PFC converters. The additional circuit branch limits the effect of negative current feedback by suppressing the change of output current slope due to change of load. This assists the pulsewidth modulation controller to track the change of load better such that the bus capacitor voltage range is reduced through duty cycle control. The auxiliary circuit branch also reduces reverse-recovery-related losses of the converter under CCM operation. An active method for double-frequency power ripple decoupling in single-phase inverters is presented in this paper, exhibiting the main advantage of not using additional power semiconductors besides the H-bridge. The proposed method requires only two capacitors placed between the midpoint and one end of each inverter leg. An original control solution of the inverter ensures the power ripple transfer toward the two decoupling capacitors without affecting the inverter output voltage. The simple design makes the proposed solution easy to adapt for single-phase inverters in H-bridge configuration. This paper focuses on the autonomous operation mode of the inverter, detailing its operating principle and the control analysis. This paper studies different circulating current references for the modular multilevel converter. The circulating current references are obtained from the instantaneous values of the output current and modulation signal of the phase leg. Therefore, the determination of the amplitude and phase of the output current is not needed, which is a significant improvement compared to other methods such as those based on injecting specific harmonics in the circulating currents. Among the different methods studied in this paper, a new method is introduced, which is able to reduce the capacitor voltage ripples compared to the other methods. A closed-loop control is also proposed which is able to track the circulating current references. With the discussed methods, the average values of the capacitor voltages are maintained at their reference while the voltage ripples are kept low. In this paper, the design and development of a novel interleaved tri-state boost converter (ITBC), which produces lower ripple and exhibits better dynamic response, is discussed. Boost converters are frequently connected in parallel and operate in an interleaving mode for the reduction of ripple content in source current and in output voltage. In this way, interleaved boost converter (IBC) is conceived, which improves the power handling capabilities and increases the overall system rating. It also has the advantage of reduction of the ripple content in source current and output voltage, but when control-to-output transfer function of IBC is derived under continuous conduction mode of operation, then a right-half-plane (RHP) zero appears in the transfer function. Due to the presence of RHP zero, IBC has nonminimum phase problem, which deteriorates the dynamic performance. The tri-state boost converter (TBC) is the best choice for RHP zero elimination, but due to the extra freewheeling mode, ripple content will also be increased. The proposed converter is a parallel combination of two TBC and operates in an interleaving mode. Therefore, the proposed converter has both of the advantages of TBC and IBC. The performance analyses of ITBC, TBC, and IBC have been studied based on simulation and experimental results. From the comparative analysis, it is observed that ITBC is performed better than other two converters. The ripple comparisons between three converters have also been done. Due to the relatively low output voltage of photovoltaic (PV) source, a high step-up converter with high efficiency is needed when the PV source is connected to the power grid. A novel high step-up converter based on two switched capacitors and a coupled inductor is proposed in this paper. The operating principle is analyzed and the voltage gain is derived. Cascaded multicell converter (CMC) is proved to be an effective solution for medium voltage drives. Three-phase diode bridge rectifiers are normally used in this converter, which do not have regeneration capability. Pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) rectifier-based power cells enable the drives with regeneration capability. However, due to their two-level voltage operation at the input side, an inductor is required for each cell to filter out the switching frequency components from the input current. In this paper, a new configuration with single-phase PWM rectifier-based power cell is proposed to achieve multilevel voltage operation at both the input and output sides of the converter. Therefore, the devices at the rectifier side are also operated at reduced switching frequency without using any filter inductor for each cell. In the proposed converter, simple modular transformers are used instead of a single large and complex transformer that is used in the conventional CMC. Further, input phase currents of the converter are controlled in the synchronously rotating d–q frame, which requires only two current sensors at the input side instead of individual current sensors for each cell. This paper proposes the combination of a novel modified quasi-Z-source (MqZS) inverter with a single-phase symmetrical hybrid three-level inverter in order to boost the inverter three-level output voltage. The proposed single-phase MqZS hybrid three-level inverter provides a higher boost ability and reduces the number of inductors in the source impedance, compared with both the single-phase three-level neural-point clamped quasi-Z-source inverter and the single-phase quasi-Z-source cascaded multilevel inverter. Additionally, it can be extended to obtain the nine-level output voltage by cascading two three-level pulse width modulation switching cells with a separate MqZS and a dc source, which herein is called a single-phase MqZS cascaded hybrid five-level inverter (MqZS-CHI). A modified modulation technique based on an alternative phase opposition disposition scheme is suggested to effectively control the shoot-through state for boosting the dc-link voltage and balancing the two series capacitor voltages of the MqZS. This paper extends the trans-Z-source concept to ac–ac power conversion and proposes a novel single-phase trans-Z-source ac–ac converter. The proposed converter retains the advantages of its existing Z-source/quasi-Z-source counterparts in which the output voltage can be boosted and in-phase with the input voltage or bucked/boosted and out-of-phase with the input voltage. Meanwhile, a coupled inductor is introduced into the proposed converter, and the turns ratio of the coupled inductor become another control variable beside the duty cycle to obtain extreme voltage gain. Importantly, the input voltage and output voltage share the same ground, and the input current could be continuous, which is a benefit for reducing input current harmonics. Most important of all, the safe-commutation strategy for the proposed converter is deep developed, and analytic expression between the switches state and loop circuit voltage/current condition is derived out. Hence, the current/voltage ripple can be avoided without a loss snubber circuit, which benefits a reduced cost and enhanced reliability. The control loop stability in boost converters operating in continuous conduction mode has been restricted due to its nonminimum phase nature: the presence of a positive zero (right-half plane zero) in the control to output voltage transfer function. This paper proposes a method to mitigate the effect of the zero on the control loop by shifting the position of the zero to the left-half plane and hence leading to increased stability for the control loop of the boost converter. Microinverters for photovoltaic (PV) modules can improve the energy generation by reducing the effects of shading, since the energy harvesting of each PV module can be controlled individually. In this context, this paper presents a topology of single-stage transformerless grid-connected boost microinverter. It promotes high voltage gain without using a preregulator circuit or a high/low-frequency transformer. A 500 W laboratory prototype was implemented and experimental tests were carried out so that the proposed microinverter was evaluated in a grid-connected PV system. In this paper, a power factor correction (PFC)-based switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive is proposed. Generally, the SRM drive is fed with a simple diode bridge rectifier followed by a bulky capacitor, which draws peaky current at low power factor and high-input-current total harmonic distortion (THD). Here, a dual output converter is proposed to control the SRM and to provide power quality improvement as well. This converter is a combination of Cuk and SEPIC converters, which produces two equal output voltages with neutral point N, to feed a midpoint converter of the SRM drive. The converter is designed to operate in discontinuous conduction mode of operation to obtain inherent PFC at supply side. The motor control is attained by regulating dc link voltage over a wide range. Test results on a prototype of the SRM drive demonstrate the excellent performance with high power factor and reduced input current THD. Three-level buck dc–dc converters have advantages over the traditional buck converters: half switch voltage stress, doubling effective switching frequency, smaller inductor size, and the higher power density. To benefit from those advantages, the flying capacitor voltage must be balanced at half of the input voltage. Most existing methods of balancing the flying capacitor voltage require current sensing, which increases the cost and noise sensitivity. This paper proposes a novel state-machine structure of second-order sliding-mode (SOSM) control for three-level buck dc–dc converters without sensing currents. With insensitivity to parameter variations of SOSM control, the proposed control approach tackles the strongly coupled problem of output voltage and flying capacitor voltage in three-level buck dc–dc converters. Compared to existing approaches, the controller achieves fast start-up without overshoots, fast load disturbances rejection, and robustness against parameter uncertainties for the output voltage, and balance of the flying capacitor voltage without sensing the current of flying capacitor. In this paper, a new type of matrix converter (MC) also called a single-phase high-frequency transformer isolated (HFTI) buck MC is proposed. The proposed converter can provide step-down operation of the input voltage with various types of output voltages such as in-phase and out-of-phase output voltages, rectified (or positive) output voltage, and output voltage with step-changed frequency. By incorporating HFT isolation, the proposed MC saves an extra bulky line frequency transformer, which is required for the conventional MCs to provide electrical isolation and safety, when used in application such as dynamic voltage restorers, etc. Two different circuit variations of the proposed HFTI MC are presented with and without continuous output currents, with the latter having less passive components. The safe-commutation strategy is also employed for the proposed HFTI MC to provide current path for the inductor during dead-time, which avoids switch voltage spikes without adding any snubber circuits. Single-phase power factor correction (PFC) ac–dc converters are widely used in the industry for ac–dc power conversion from single phase ac-mains to an isolated output dc voltage. Typically, for high-power applications, such converters use an ac–dc boost input converter followed by a dc–dc full-bridge converter. A new ac–dc single-stage high-power universal PFC ac input full-bridge, pulse-width modulated converter is proposed in this paper. The converter can operate with an excellent input power factor, continuous input and output currents, and a non-excessive intermediate dc bus voltage and has reduced number of semiconductor devices thus presenting a cost-effective novel solution for such applications. In this paper, the operation of the proposed converter is explained, a steady-state analysis of its operation is performed, and the results of the analysis are used to develop a procedure for its design. This paper introduces a novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique aimed at maximizing the power produced by photovoltaic (PV) systems. The largest part of the MPPT approaches presented in the literature are based on the sensing of the PV generator voltage. On the contrary, in this paper, a current-based technique is proposed: the sensing of the current in the capacitor placed in parallel with the PV source is one of the innovative aspects of the proposal. A dual control technique based on an inner current loop plus an outer voltage loop allows to take profit of the fast current tracking capability of the inner current loop while the voltage loop benefits from the logarithmic dependency of the PV voltage on the irradiation level. The features of the proposed algorithm, particularly in terms of tracking of irradiation variations and disturbance rejection, are supported by theoretical analysis, simulations, and experimental results. This paper proposes a high step-up dc-dc converter based on the Cockcroft-Walton (CW) voltage multiplier without a step-up transformer. Providing continuous input current with low ripple, high voltage ratio, and low voltage stress on the switches, diodes, and capacitors, the proposed converter is quite suitable for applying to low-input-level dc generation systems. Moreover, based on the n -stage CW voltage multiplier, the proposed converter can provide a suitable dc source for an n + 1-level multilevel inverter. In this paper, the proposed control strategy employs two independent frequencies, one of which operates at high frequency to minimize the size of the inductor while the other one operates at relatively low frequency according to the desired output voltage ripple. The dc–dc modular multilevel converter (MMC), which has originated from the ac–dc MMC circuit topology, is an attractive converter topology for interconnection of medium-/high-voltage dc grids. Proper operation of the dc–dc MMC necessitates injection of an ac circulating current to maintain its submodule (SM) capacitor voltages balanced. The ac circulating current, however, needs to be minimized for efficiency improvement. In addition, a unique type of imbalance amongst the SM capacitor voltages that is caused by dc power flow needs to be mitigated. This paper proposes a closed-loop control strategy for the dc–dc MMC to simultaneously regulate the dc-link currents, maintain the SM capacitor voltages balanced, and minimize the ac circulating current. A two-switch semiquadratic fifth-order buck converter belonging to a minimum-phase family is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter exhibits better dynamic performance, steady-state voltage gain in between conventional buck and quadratic buck converter. In view of this characteristic, it gives more bucking than the traditional buck converter. A time-domain analysis is formulated to predict the converter's steady-state performance. Also, the equations for designing the energy storage elements are established. Salient performance features, voltage bucking and source current ripples, of the proposed converter are compared to other competing/reported buck topologies. Transfer functions are obtained through state-space models, and then these are used in the controller design studies. The converter stabilization characteristics are studied through simulations. This paper proposes a power-factor-corrected bridgeless (BL) switched-mode power supply (SMPS) for welding applications that possesses output voltage control and current limiting feature even during extreme overloading conditions at the output terminals. Eliminating an input diode bridge rectifier minimizes conduction losses and improves thermal utilization of semiconductor devices. The front-end of the proposed SMPS consists of a BL boost converter operating in a continuous conduction mode to attain unity power factor, while at the rear end a pulse width modulation isolated full bridge dc–dc converter is used to regulate the output voltage. The design and implementation of this BL arc welding power supply (AWPS) is presented showing its fast dynamic response to supply voltage and load variations. The performance of the proposed AWPS is examined in terms of power factor, total harmonic distortion of the supply current, efficiency, and output current limit over a wide range of line/load variations. Test results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed AWPS in maintaining an impeccable power quality at utility interface apart from achieving an excellent output voltage regulation and current limiting capability. This paper proposes a novel modular multilevel dc–dc converter intended for transforming dc voltage and interconnecting dc grids for medium-voltage networks. The converter is composed by two strings of submodules, each of which consists of an upper arm and a lower arm with their middle points crossly connected through a dc capacitor. With assistant of the cross-connected capacitors, dc and ac power loops are formed for the dc–dc converter, leading to the power balance between primary and secondary sides, as well as between upper and lower arms. The avoidance of transformer brings the favorable features of low cost and light weight to the proposed dc–dc converter. In order to guarantee the normal operation of the dc–dc converter, a control strategy with focus on converter power balance control is presented. Simulation performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK validates the operation principle of the dc–dc converter. This paper proposes a novel family of cascade three-level (TL) ac–ac direct converters based on ac switch cells, which transfer unsteady high ac voltage with distortion into regulated sinusoidal voltage with low total harmonic distortion (THD). The topological family includes buck TL–boost, buck–boost TL, and buck TL–boost TL modes. In order to achieve a reliable TL ac–ac conversion, a double transient voltage feedback control strategy of the output voltage and the voltage across the flying capacitor is introduced in this paper. This paper presents a new dual-switch control structure for an ac/dc noninverting cascaded buck–boost power factor correction converter. The proposed converter operates at a discontinuous capacitor voltage mode providing an inherent high-power factor and a zero voltage turn-off switching. Additionally, the proposed control structure enables for a nondistorted sinusoidal current for a wide range of output voltage levels. Unlike the conventional methods, a mode detector is not required and consequently there is no hard transition between buck and boost modes. Although both converter switches are controlled, only one feedback control loop is required to obtain the desired power flow at a unity power factor. Compared with constant duty cycle-controlled discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) boost power factor (PF) correction (PFC) converter, constant duty cycle-controlled quadratic DCM–DCM boost PFC converter features with much lower second-order line frequency output voltage ripple, and however, it suffers from low PF. To increase PF of quadratic DCM–DCM boost PFC converter, a variable duty cycle control technique for quadratic DCM–DCM boost PFC converter is presented in this paper. An approximation equivalent for the variable duty cycle is employed to simplify the implementation circuit. The corresponding expressions of PF and output voltage ripple are analyzed. For input voltage range of 100–240 Vac, quadratic DCM–DCM boost PFC converter with variable duty cycle control benefits with very high PF, and tradeoff between PF and output voltage ripple of this converter is analyzed. There are various resonant tanks for constructing resonant converters. In this paper, the equivalence relations of resonant tanks are investigated, which bring a new perspective for analysis of resonant converters. On one hand, the equivalence relations can help select suitable resonant converter topologies for specific applications, which is illustrated by the examples of the LLC resonant converter and CLL resonant converter, and LCC resonant converter and hybrid series–parallel resonant converter (HSPRC). It is known that the ripple-based control of a switching dc–dc converter benefits from a faster transient response than a conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) control switching dc–dc converter. However, ripple-based control switching dc–dc converters may suffer from fast-scale oscillation. In order to achieve fast transient response and ensure the stable operation of a switching dc–dc converter over a wide load range, based on a conventional pulse train (PT) control technique, a peak capacitor current PT (PCC-PT) control technique is proposed in this paper. With a buck converter as an example, the operating modes, steady-state performance, and transient respond performance of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter are presented and assessed. To eliminate fast-scale oscillation, circuit and control parameter design considerations are given. An accurate discrete iteration model of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter is established, based on which the effects of circuit parameters on the stability of the converter operating in a discontinuous current mode (DCM), mixed DCM-continuous conduction mode (CCM), and CCM are studied. In this paper, a novel grid-connected high step-up inverter is proposed. The topology is composed of two stages. The first stage is a single-switch high step-up dc–dc converter with bipolar outputs, and the second stage is a conventional half-bridge dc–ac grid-connected inverter. Negative grounding of the photovoltaic (PV) module has resulted in elimination of unwanted ground leakage currents in the PV system. Simple structure, employing few semiconductor switches, simple control, and high efficiency are the features of the proposed topology. The compound active-clamp zero-voltage switching three-phase power factor correction (PFC) converter is used as the first stage converter of the heating power supply in the monocrystalline silicon growth furnace to achieve high efficiency and high power factor. Parameter uncertainty and variation are the main problems for the controller design of the converter. The conventional methods, including proportional–integral (PI) control, exact feedback linearization (EFL) control, etc., cannot deal with such problems. In this paper, we propose a model reference adaptive control for voltage outer loop to achieve adaptation for the load and capacitor variations, as well as a variable structure control with shrinking boundary layer for current inner loop to improve robustness to the parameters uncertainty. The simulation and experiment results show that the proposed controller improves the power factor and efficiency of the system, and it has better transient and steady-state performance with respect to the load variation, as compared with the traditional PI control method and the EFL control method. This paper presents high step-up dc-to-dc converter for low voltage sources such as solar photovoltaics, fuel cells, and battery banks. To achieve high voltage gain without large duty cycle operation, combination of coupled inductor and switched capacitor voltage doubler cells are used. By incorporating active clamp circuit, voltage spike due to the leakage inductance of the coupled inductor is alleviated and zero-voltage switching turn on of the main and auxiliary switch is obtained. Due to the use of MOSFETs of low voltage rating and soft turn on of the switches, conduction loss and switching losses are reduced. This improves the efficiency and power density of the converter. The proposed converter can achieve high voltage gain with reduced voltage stress on MOSFET switches and output diodes.
