This paper proposes a capacitor voltage regulation method for the dual converter with a floating bridge for aerospace applications. This topology has previously been reported, but with a constrained voltage utilization factor due to the need for capacitor voltage regulations. In this paper, the effect of switching states on the voltage variation of capacitor is quantitatively modeled and an enhanced space vector modulation scheme with current feedback is proposed to achieve an active control of the floating capacitor voltages. This proposed method also allows further exploitation and utilization of converter voltage. The relationship between the allowed modulation index of dual converter and load power factor is obtained and expressed using a fitted polynomial equation. The advantages of the proposed method include boosted voltage utilization and superior performance in term of capacitor voltage balance. These advantages have been proven through simulation and experimental results on RL loads as well as with an open-end winding induction motor. The proposed modulation scheme can boost the converter voltage utilization by at least 10% while achieving full four-level operation. A trinary multilevel converter uses a few heterogeneous H-bridge submodules (SMs) to synthesize an output voltage with multiple levels. Two major limitations of this converter are that it needs multiple dc sources and it cannot operate under pulsewidth modulation (PWM). This paper addresses these limitations by adding a low-voltage H-bridge SM to this converter and proposing a new switching algorithm. The resulting PWM-based asymmetric cascaded H-bridge converter uses only one dc source and synthesizes a high-quality output voltage. This improved converter can be a potential choice for real and reactive power support in power system applications. This paper also proposes methods for stability analysis and design of this converter. For an LLC converter, it is difficult to realize the wide output range with conventional pulse frequency modulation control because of the limited operating frequency. This paper proposes a new hybrid control method. The proposed strategy combines the burst-mode control and phase-shift control methods for the LLC converter. The burst-mode control can regulate the output voltage from zero to its maximum value, and the phase-shift control can reduce the increased resonant current during burst-on time. By using this method, the wide output voltage range is realized with the low resonant current during burst-on time and zero-voltage switch (ZVS) for all switches. The reliability and efficiency of the converter can be improved accordingly. The burst duty ratio is regulated by the reference output voltage, and the phase-shift angle is derived when realizing ZVS for lagging-leg switches. Moreover, the resonant parameters and the maximum phase-shift angle are optimized under the constraints of current stress and ZVS condition. This method is easy to be implemented in a low-cost microcontroller because high-frequency real-time calculations are not necessary. In a conventional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) formulation, active and reactive power control loops rely on the predictive controller, whereas the dc-bus voltage is usually governed by a PI-based control loop. This originates from fact that the dynamic equations for describing the predictions of these variables are heavily coupled. In this paper, a cascade-free FCS-MPC for single-phase grid-connected power converters is presented. The proposed control algorithm is formulated in terms of established dynamic references design, which was originally proposed to directly govern active and reactive power, and dc-voltage in three-phase power converters. In this paper, the dynamic reference design concept is extended to control single-phase grid-connected power converters. The proposed control algorithm does not use instantaneous ac-power calculations; instead, it directly formulates the optimal control problem on the grid-current in the original stationary reference frame. The experimental results obtained with a single-phase grid-connected neutral point clamped (NPC) converter confirm a successful design, where system constraints, e.g., maximum power and weighted switching frequency, are easily taken into account. This paper presents a novel model predictive control (MPC) for the T-type single-phase three-level inverters. The cumbersome procedure in tuning of weighting factors is eliminated so that the implementation of the proposed MPC becomes easy. The constant switching frequency is achieved during the control implementation in order to facilitate the filter design. In order to optimize the distribution of the output current harmonics, multiple voltage vectors are employed in each control cycle with their application times setting inversely proportion to the respective cost function. The redundant small voltage vectors are utilized to balance the neutral point voltage of the inverter by directly regulating the upper and lower dc-link capacitors voltages. Finally, the proposed MPC algorithm is experimentally evaluated and compared with other two unfixed switching frequency MPC algorithms in terms of the steady state, transient performance, and parameter sensitivity. When fast voltage control is used in a power factor control, the ripple of the dc link causes current harmonics. This paper proposes a method to reduce the harmonic content of a fast voltage loop in a power factor correction, which can both produce low distortion during steady-state operation and fast recovery from a load transient. The performance is achieved by using a Takagi–Sugeno-type nonlinear controller for dc-link voltage control. The proposed nonlinear control is compared with linear proportional–integral (PI) control, which is tuned to meet the standardized regulations for the harmonic content in a 3-kW single phase power supply. The results show that the presented nonlinear voltage controller can maintain the dynamic performance of the linear control with reduced current harmonics. The interleaved bidirectional buck–boost converter dual active half-bridge (IBBC-DAHB) dc–dc converter consists of two converters IBBC and DAHB and a coupled inductor. The IBBC-DAHB converter has significant features such as low ripple current at the low-voltage side, low current stress on the input inductors, voltage stress across the switches less than the high-voltage side, high voltage gain, and zero-voltage soft switching. The converter offers high efficiency using phase-shift modulation when it operates at a nominal design operating point. However, the efficiency decreases due to high circulating current, high current stress, and limited soft-switching range when the source and load voltages deviate from their nominal values. This paper employs both duty cycle and phase-shift modulation methods to improve the above mentioned shortcomings using voltage matching for the DAHB converter. The proposed converter is analyzed and a 500-W experimental prototype with 40–60 V input voltage and 400 V output voltage under 100 kHz switching frequency is implemented to verify the theoretical results. The maximum efficiency of 97.15% is achieved at 60 V and 400 W. A flat efficiency characteristic for the converter is derived by the proposed control method, where the efficiency at 20% of nominal load is 91% and much higher than the phase-shift control, which is 70.8%. In this paper, an input-series flyback converter with the coupled-inductor-based passive snubber is proposed, where the input-series converter is based on transformer integration, and the passive snubber is composed of inductors, capacitors, and diodes. The inductors of the snubber in various series modules are made on a common magnetic core, and the coupled-inductor scheme is adopted. With the help of the coupled inductor, active input voltage sharing of the input-series converter can also be achieved after the switches are turned off, and voltage sharing of the switch in each series module can be ensured, which overcome the shortcomings of the existing input-series flyback converter. Active voltage sharing processes caused by the coupled inductor are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the design guideline of the passive snubber is discussed. Finally, the experimental study has been done on a 1500 Vdc/60 W laboratory-made prototype composed of three flyback series modules, and the feasibility of the proposed method and the theoretical analysis is verified by the experimental results. This paper presents a sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) based direct digital control with average-voltage model (AVM) and division–summation process for paralleled three-phase three-wire (3φ3W) grid-connected converters to reduce circulating currents. With the direct digital control, plant of each single-phase converter can be derived directly, and a controller is then designed to cover the variation effects of filter inductance and grid voltage. Based on SPWM and AVM over a switching cycle, each 3φ3W converter can be decomposed into three single-phase converters and each converter is controlled individually to track its sinusoidal reference current tightly, reducing circulating currents significantly. Equal current sharing is therefore also achieved. The control laws for achieving grid connection are derived in detail. In the design and implementation, the inductances corresponding to various inductor currents are measured offline and stored in the controller for scheduling loop gain cycle by cycle. This paper presents a comprehensive and generalized analysis of the bidirectional dual active bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter using triple phase shift (TPS) control to enable closed-loop power regulation while minimizing current stress. The key new achievements are a generic analysis in terms of possible conversion ratios/converter voltage gains (i.e., Buck/Boost/Unity), per unit based equations regardless of DAB ratings, and a new simple closed-loop controller implementable in real time to meet desired power transfer regulation at minimum current stress. Per unit based analytical expressions are derived for converter ac rms current as well as power transferred. An offline particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is used to obtain an extensive set of TPS ratios for minimizing the rms current in the entire bidirectional power range of –1 to 1 per unit. The extensive set of results achieved from PSO presents a generic data pool, which is carefully analyzed to derive simple useful relations. Such relations enable a generic closed-loop controller design that can be implemented in real time avoiding the extensive computational capacity that iterative optimization techniques require. A detailed Simulink DAB switching model is used to validate the precision of the proposed closed-loop controller under various operating conditions. The conventional design of voltage-source power converters is based on a two-level half-bridge configuration and the selection of power devices designed to meet the full application specifications (voltage, current, etc.). This leads to the need to design and optimize a large number of different devices and their ancillary circuitry and prevents taking advantage from scale economies. This paper proposes a paradigm shift in the design of power converters through the use of a novel configurable device consisting on a matrix arrangement of highly optimized switching cells at a single voltage class. Each switching cell consists of a controlled switch with antiparallel diode together with a self-powered gate driver. By properly interconnecting the switching cells, the switching-cell array (SCA) can be configured as a multilevel active-clamped leg with a different number of levels. Thus, the SCA presents adjustable voltage and current ratings, according to the selected configuration. For maximum compactness, the SCA can be conceived to be only configurable by the device manufacturer upon the customer needs. For minimum cost, it can also be conceived to be configurable by the customer, leading to field-configurable SCAs. Filters for switching ripple attenuation are essential at the input, and sometimes at the output for certain applications, for the deployment of matrix converters (MCs). Due to the absence of inertial elements in the MC structure and the consequent tight input–output coupling, the filter parameters significantly affect its dynamic behavior. This paper presents an exhaustive filter design method for synchronous applications of the MC in power systems. Apart from the usual considerations of ripple attenuation, voltage regulation, reactive current loading, and internal losses, this paper also addresses additional constraints which may be imposed by requirements of dynamic performance and reliable commutation. Rigorous analytical justification of each design step is provided and the sequential design process is summarized. Relevant experimental results are presented to validate the proposed design tool. Due to the relatively low output voltage of photovoltaic (PV) source, a high step-up converter with high efficiency is needed when the PV source is connected to the power grid. A novel high step-up converter based on two switched capacitors and a coupled inductor is proposed in this paper. The operating principle is analyzed and the voltage gain is derived. Modern development of semiconductor power-switching devices has promoted the use of power electronic converters as power transformers at the distribution level. This paper presents an ac–ac dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter for a solid-state transformer. The proposed converter topology consists of two active H-bridges and one high-frequency transformer. Four-quadrant switch cells are used to allow bidirectional power flow. Because power is controlled by the phase shift between two bridges, output voltage can be regulated when input voltage changes. This paper analyzes the steady-state operation and the range of zero-voltage switching. It develops a switch commutation scheme for the ac–ac DAB converters. A switching power-converter closed-loop online autotuning controller is presented in this paper. The presented controller is based on tuning the closed-loop-compensator parameters by simply observing the compensated-error-signal time-domain characteristics. Moreover, the presented online autotuning controller does not require the knowledge of the power-stage frequency response, does not depend on any conventional rule-of-thumb control-design criteria such as gain and phase margins, can be used without interrupting the normal operation of the power converter, and is relatively simple when compared to other methods particularly those that require measuring the frequency response of the power stage or closed-loop converter system. A new three-phase single-stage rectifier is proposed in this paper. The outstanding features of the proposed rectifier are that it can produce input currents that do not have deadband regions and an output current that can be continuous when the converter is operating from maximum load to at least half of the load. A microconverter serves as a front-end dc–dc stage of a microinverter to convert the power from a photovoltaic module to a dc bus. These front-end microconverters require isolation, high-boost ratio, wide-input voltage regulation, and high efficiency. This paper introduces an isolated resonant converter with hybrid modes of operation to achieve wide-input regulation while still maintaining high efficiency. The proposed converter is designed as a series resonant converter with nominal-input voltage and operates under two additional modes: a boost converter with low-input voltage and a buck converter with high-input voltage. Unlike conventional resonant converters, this converter operates at discontinues conduction mode with a fixed frequency, simplifying the design and control. In addition, this converter can achieve zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and/or zero-current switching (ZCS) of the primary-side MOSFETs, ZVS and/or ZCS of the secondary-side MOSFETs, and ZCS of output diodes under all operating conditions. Experimental results using a 300-W prototype achieve a peak efficiency of 98.1% and a California Energy Commission efficiency of 97.6% including all auxiliary and control power at nominal-input voltage. This paper presents a new buck converter with optimum-damping and dynamic-slope compensation techniques. The optimum-damping control is a well-known current control method, and the proposed dynamic-slope generator can achieve frequency compensation to prevent subharmonic oscillation. When the system is disturbed, the proposed dynamic-slope generator can stabilize the circuit in a single cycle. Hence, the dynamic-slope compensation can be used to replace traditional extra slope compensation in the optimum-damping-control circuit. The measured transient time of the load current is 2 μs from 50 to 500 mA, and 3 μs from 500 to 50 mA. The optimum-damping-control techniques can rapidly reach desired output voltage in 2–3 switching cycles. The experimental and simulation results confirm that the proposed approach can achieve the slope compensation and accelerate the transient response. The proposed converter has been fabricated with TSMC 0.18 μm CMOS 1P6M technology. The converter's operating frequency is 1 MHz, the maximum output current is 500 mA, and the peak power efficiency is 89.68% under 300-mA load current. Compensation of nonlinear effects generated by dead-time and semiconductors voltage drop has been widely studied in the literature about two-level converters. This paper takes a closer look at those analyses for multilevel converters, specifically for a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter modulated with phase-shifted pulse width modulation. The interaction between the cells is analyzed for a generic $n$ -cell converter, from which a general expression for the distortion generated by the nonlinearities has been obtained. Based on this expression, a compensation signal for the overall converter is calculated on each sample time, which is a fraction of the triangular carrier used to modulate each cell, thus significantly improving the quality of the output voltage signals. This paper proposes a new configuration for static ground power unit (GPU) based on the novel 25-level hybrid active neutral-point-clamped (HANPC) converter. The superiority of the proposed converter, as compared with conventional and other suggested multilevel converters, is significant decreasing the number of switches and minimizing the number of flying capacitors (FC) in converter. This improvement is possible by using suggested low-voltage submodule converter to the ANPC converter and proposed modulation method. This results in reduction of the size and cost of converter and makes it more feasible and reliable. Applying the active voltage balancing method for FC in the proposed HANPC converter guaranties fast charging and voltage-level regulation of FC without using balance booster circuit. Improving output voltage spectrum leads to inductance reduction of output L–C filter which enhances static GPU performance. In this paper, a novel cascaded seven-level inverter topology with a single input source integrating switched-capacitor techniques is presented. Compared with the traditional cascade multilevel inverter, the proposed topology replaces all the separate dc sources with capacitors, leaving only one H-bridge cell with a real dc voltage source and only adds two charging switches. The capacitor charging circuit contains only power switches, so that the capacitor charging time is independent of the load. The capacitor voltage can be controlled at a desired level without complex voltage control algorithm and only use the most common carrier phase-shifted sinusoidal pulse width modulation strategy. The operation principle and the charging–discharging characteristic analysis are discussed in detail. The model predictive control has an ability to achieve multiple control objectives for a modular multilevel converter. This approach has high computational complexity and causes the unwanted switching's leading to a higher ripple in output current and harmonic distortion in output voltage and current waveforms. To solve the issues of computational burden and unwanted switchings, this paper proposes a dual-stage model predictive control approach for a modular multilevel converter. In this approach, the primary objectives are evaluated in first stage corresponding to the redundancy of voltage vectors, while the secondary objectives are evaluated in second stage corresponding to the submodule redundancy. Therefore, the computational burden is significantly minimized without affecting the dynamic response. In addition, a discrete-time model of modular multilevel converter incorporating the common-mode voltage is proposed. The simulation and experimental studies are conducted on a three-phase modular multilevel converter to verify the dynamic and steady-state performance of the proposed approach. This paper provides a characterizationr analysis for the voltage balance of modular cascaded converter in a medium-voltage direct-current distribution grid. Specifically, voltage stability and traditional auxiliary resistor solution are analyzed from the theoretical level. On this basis, a minimum voltage tracking balance (MVTB) control based on a switched resistor is proposed. The voltage balance during startup and normal locked processes can be adjusted effectively by MVTB control. Moreover, the resistor does not need to absorb power continuously; instead, it is just switched into operation for a while when a difference occurs, and the power loss can be decreased after the system recovers to a steady state. A new resonant converter having low voltage stress and nearly constant efficiency against line variation for high- and wide-input-voltage applications is presented in this paper. It is similar to a three-level zero-voltage-switching pulsewidth modulation converter (TL ZVS PWMC) with two flying capacitors. In the proposed converter, however, two flying capacitors are used as the resonant capacitors, and the output voltage regulation is achieved by frequency modulation. The main advantages of the proposed converter are that, since the sum of the voltages of two resonant capacitors is constant and is equal to half of the input voltage, the voltage across each switch clamps to half of the input voltage and keeps the balance. Moreover, all main switches and rectifier diodes are softly switched under full-line and full-load conditions, and high efficiency can be constantly achieved over a wide input voltage range. These advantages solve the drawbacks on TL ZVS PWMCs. The features, operation principles, and relevant analysis results over a wide input voltage range of the proposed converter are presented in this paper. The validity of this study is confirmed by the experimental results of a prototype converter with 400–600-V input, 48-V/10-A output, and 200-kHz resonant frequency. The experimental results show that the maximum efficiency of the proposed converter is 95.08% under a full-load and a 600-V input and slightly varies across the 400–600-V input voltage range. This paper proposes a unified PWM method for matrix converters so as to establish a common platform which can generate various types of PWM methods in real time by adjusting the free parameters in the modulation algorithm. As a foundation for unification, the general form of the modulation functions for matrix converters is derived using geometric transformation approach. All eligible direct modulation matrices are shown to be of indirect form and are expressed in terms of instantaneous phase quantities. This paper also presents a new viewpoint to consider a matrix converter as a generalized three-level inverter and to apply the double-carrier-based dipolar modulation technique of the three-level inverter to the matrix converter. The matrix converter can be used in a wide range of applications. Nevertheless, it does not yet represent a sufficiently mature option for industrialization. In order to resolve this problem, this paper examines the hardware of the matrix converter and identifies all the circuits that should be included in this. It also quantifies the operating conditions and provides practical guidelines for the step-by-step design of a matrix converter. These considerations are validated with experimental results. This paper proposes a novel family of cascade three-level (TL) ac–ac direct converters based on ac switch cells, which transfer unsteady high ac voltage with distortion into regulated sinusoidal voltage with low total harmonic distortion (THD). The topological family includes buck TL–boost, buck–boost TL, and buck TL–boost TL modes. In order to achieve a reliable TL ac–ac conversion, a double transient voltage feedback control strategy of the output voltage and the voltage across the flying capacitor is introduced in this paper. A 500-VA 220-V \pm10% 50-Hz ac/220-V 50-Hz ac prototype is presented with the experimental results to prove that the converters have four improved advantages simultaneously, including lower voltage across power switches, bidirectional power flow, low THD of output voltage, and higher input power factor. Multilevel power electronic converters have gained popularity in high-power applications due to their lower switch voltage stress and modularity. Cascaded H-bridge converters are a promising breed of multilevel converters which generally require several separate dc voltage sources. By utilizing the redundant switching states, it is possible to replace the separate dc voltage sources with capacitors and keep only the one with the highest voltage level. Redundancy in the charge and discharge modes of the capacitors is assumed to be adequate for their voltage regulation. However, the effects of the output current of the converter as well as the time duration of the redundant switching states have been neglected. In this paper, the impacts of the connected load to the cascaded H-bridge converter as well as the switching angles on the voltage regulation of the capacitors are studied. This paper proves that voltage regulation is only attainable in a much limited operating conditions that it was originally reported. In addition, based on the analysis of the converter, a simplified formula is found which can be used to find those modulation indices that regulate the voltage of the capacitor. This formula can be used in harmonic minimization problems while capacitor voltage regulation is ensured. Simulation and laboratory results are provided to confirm the analysis. This paper proposes improvements to the control method based on the complete dynamical model published by Kömürcügil and Kükrer, which is very simple by operation in the stationary reference frame and lacks ac-line-current sensors. Nevertheless, the basic control method is very sensitive to variations of the line inductances, which provide difficulties in many industry applications. The modifications proposed in this paper overcome this disadvantage using a fuzzy logic controller to tune parameters and do more robust the basic control in view of line inductance parameters variations. Unfortunately, the new tuning method needs information about the reactive line current; therefore, ac-line-current reconstruction algorithm based on the dc-link current measurement has been included to keep the same number of sensors as the basic solution. In this paper, a cascaded H-Bridge (CHB)-multilevel converter (MC)-based photovoltaic (PV) system with no voltage or current sensors at the dc-side is proposed. Eliminating the dc-side sensors simplifies the hardware, leading to lower cost and higher reliability of the PV system. A novel scheme estimating the capacitors’ voltages from the ac output voltage of the inverter is developed. The scheme allows replacing all dc-side voltage sensors by a single-voltage sensor at the ac-side of the converter. Furthermore, the dc current sensors, conventionally required for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), are also eliminated. Instead, the outputs from the capacitors’ voltage control systems are utilized for the MPPT. This paper presents a new dual-switch control structure for an ac/dc noninverting cascaded buck–boost power factor correction converter. The proposed converter operates at a discontinuous capacitor voltage mode providing an inherent high-power factor and a zero voltage turn-off switching. Additionally, the proposed control structure enables for a nondistorted sinusoidal current for a wide range of output voltage levels. Unlike the conventional methods, a mode detector is not required and consequently there is no hard transition between buck and boost modes. Although both converter switches are controlled, only one feedback control loop is required to obtain the desired power flow at a unity power factor. Semiactive quadrupler rectifiers (SAQRs) are proposed in this paper to serve as the secondary rectification circuits, which make the secondary-side voltages to be controllable and help reduce current stress and conduction losses. An interleaved isolated boost converter is developed based on the proposed SAQRs. By utilizing the pulse-width modulation (PWM) plus phase-shift (PPS) control strategy, the primary- and secondary-side voltages are well matched to reduce the current values and circulating conduction losses. With the proposed SAQRs, the voltage gain is extended and the voltage stresses on power devices and passive components used in rectification circuits are reduced to the half of the high output voltage. Hence, the efficiency is improved by using a transformer with a smaller turns ratio and reduced parasitic parameters, and by employing low-voltage rating devices with better switching and conduction performance. With optimal design, lower voltage, and current stresses on the primary-side switches, minimized input current ripple can be realized. Moreover, the zero-voltage turn on switching of the active switches and the zero-current turn off switching of the diodes can be achieved over a wide load and voltage range by the proposed SAQR-based converter and the control strategy. Meanwhile, the higher voltage gain, the lower voltage, and the current stresses on power devices can be obtained with the proposed SAQR-based converter compared with passive quadrupler rectifier-based converter. This paper presents a robust model-based control in natural frame for a three-phase shunt active power filter. For the proposed control method, a linear converter model is deduced. Then, this model is used in a Kalman filter (KF) to estimate the system state-space variables. Even though the states estimation do not match the variables of the real system, it has allowed to design three sliding-mode controllers providing the following features to the closed-loop system: 1)  robustness due to the fact that control specifications are met independently of any variation in the system parameters; 2)  noise immunity, since a KF is applied; 3)  a lower total harmonic distortion (THD) of the current delivered by the grid compared with the standard solution using measured variables; 4)  the fundamental component of the voltage at the point of common coupling is estimated even in the case of a distorted grid; and 5)  a reduction in the number of sensors. Thanks to this solution, the sliding surfaces for each controller are independent. This decoupling property of the three controllers allows using a fixed switching-frequency algorithm that ensures a perfect current control. This paper presents a model predictive voltage control (MPVC) method for the single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) dc–dc converter. The proposed MPVC method is able to solve the cross-regulation problem, which is a critical issue in SIMO dc–dc converters. The design of the proposed method including augmented state-space model, cost function, enumerated algorithm, and constraints for the SIMO dc–dc converter is discussed. Simulation for the influences of predict horizon NP, control horizon NC, and Lagrange multiplier $\lambda$ on the voltage ripple is conducted to guide the control parameters’ setting for hardware implementation. Steady-state operation and dynamic performance of the proposed MPVC method are conducted in simulation and experiment based on the single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) buck converter to verify the proposed MPVC method. In addition, the comparison between the proposed method and state-of-art methods for the SIMO dc–dc converters is presented. This paper presents a new phase current-balance control method of unbalanced phase currents in multiphase converters. The phase current reconstruction process, in which the sampled dc-link current from a dc-link current sensor is used to reconstruct the phase currents, is comprehensively investigated, taking account of both the region of duty ratio and the operating mode of the continuous current mode (CCM) and discontinuous current mode (DCM). DCM operation reveals that the phase current reconstruction cannot coincide with the average value of the respective phase current. Eventually, it is confirmed that this proposed balance control based on a circular chain control makes it possible to establish an exact current sharing among the phase currents all over the operating condition including the DCM. The actual phase currents do not show any distorted waveforms due to the multisamplings of dc-link current that do not provoke any extra switching of the converter switches at all. For interleaved boost-type converters, both functions of voltage regulation and current balance are important. In this paper, the decoupled current-balancing control (DCBC) with two parallel loops is proposed. At first, the small-signal transfer functions of the voltage-regulation loop and the current balancing loop to the controller output are derived. The results show that the voltage-regulation loop and the proposed current-balancing loop are nominally decoupled. That is, two PI-type controllers can be designed independently and included to implement the proposed DCBC. Additionally, the single-sensor sampling-current strategy is proposed to obtain two average inductor currents by sensing only the sum of diode currents. A novel complementary phase disposition pulsewidth modulation method for the modular multilevel converter (MMC) with a limited number of submodules is proposed in this paper. Compared with the previous works, more practical issues have been considered, and the corresponding solutions have been provided. First, a new preset PWM signal mapping sequence and an improved virtual loop mapping (VLM) are used in the modulation. This method not only achieves a favorable capacitor voltage balance in the symmetry system but lowers the switching frequency of MMC's devices. Second, to further reduce the switching frequency, the unbalance margin of capacitor voltages is adopted to achieve the switching between the VLM and the selective VLM (SVLM). Moreover, the system robustness has been improved by considering the situation of symmetry losing, like cell fails; in these cases, the capacitor voltages of the upper and lower arms are balanced through the collaboration of the SVLM and the reconfigurable VLM. In conventional control systems for a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on a cascaded H-bridge multilevel converter, the action of individual voltage controllers that balance capacitor voltages can alter the output of a cluster voltage controller and a current controller due to a coupling effect. In this paper, first, the conditions that eliminate this coupling effect are derived, and then, a control system that enforces the derived decoupling conditions is proposed. It is also shown that an additional advantage of the proposed decoupled control system is that it enables the linearization of a cluster voltage control loop. Experimental studies on a single-phase seven-level STATCOM demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed decoupled control system in improving the transient performance of the STATCOM. This paper proposes a hybrid modulation strategy for asymmetrical cascaded multilevel converters operating under normal and faulty conditions on power cells. The proposed algorithm explores the advantages of both space vector (SV) and carrier-based modulation approaches. An SV is used for higher voltage cells to properly choose their voltage vectors in a way such as to avoid converter saturation, particularly under fault conditions. A generic algorithm to identify the domains of higher voltage vectors in which a reference lies, without the need for separation lines, is proposed. Then, to simplify the implementation of the algorithm, carrier-based modulation is employed for lower voltage cells, which switch with pulsewidth modulation. This suppresses the need for defining multiple switching sequences for different operational conditions, and it avoids converter saturation as much as possible, particularly under fault conditions on power cells. Simulation and experimental results for normal and faulty operational conditions are given, validating the theoretical analysis and demonstrating the good performance of the proposed hybrid modulation approach. A novel CLL resonant converter with a semi-bridgeless active rectifier (S-BAR) is analyzed, and its hybrid control strategy is proposed in this paper. This topology is developed by replacing rectifier lower diodes with synchronous switches and regulation by a phase-shifted pulsewidth-modulation signal. Theoretical and simulation results show that the performance of the proposed S-BAR is appropriate for resonant converters and secondary-side controlled infrastructure requiring a wide voltage range control at the secondary side. The hybrid control algorithm is obtained with the phase-shift and frequency tuning considering the voltage at the load terminal. High efficiency can be maintained by this proposed control, reducing conduction losses and providing zero-voltage switching soft-switching condition with a wide output voltage range. To confirm the performance of the proposed converter, experimental results are provided for which the output voltage/current range from 0 to 80 V/0 to 8.75 A with an input of 120 V and an average efficiency value of 93%. Phase-shifted carrier modulation is an industry standard in its application to multilevel H-bridge converters. The major advantage of this scheme over level-shifted and space vector modulation schemes is its inherent ability to evenly distribute losses between semiconductor devices. However, until now, its implementation has necessitated a capacitor voltage balancing scheme that degrades converter harmonic performance. This paper develops two phase-shifted carrier modulation schemes that avoid harmonic degradation by exploiting an extra degree of freedom in the available switching states. In this paper, the two-input buck converter is proposed as the dc/dc stage for photovoltaic (PV) cascaded converters. This converter is attractive for this application because it is cost effective and reliable and can achieve dual maximum power point tracking (MPPT) with only one power transistor. However, due to the simplified and integrated structure, the nonlinear characteristics of the converter and the two PV arrays complicate the control. By means of a small-signal modeling, the control theme of the two PV voltages is formulated, and the effect of the nonlinearities is presented. It is shown that, while fast voltage dynamics are achieved for the first input, the second-input voltage response depends on the second-stage converter control. The three-level boost power factor correction (PFC) converter has advantages of lower inductor current ripple and lower switch withstanding voltage compared with the boost PFC converter. Interleaved pulsewidth modulation had been used in the multiphase boost PFC converter. In the literature, interleaved current sensorless control (ICSC) for the multiphase boost PFC converters had been proposed. In this paper, the behavior of the three-level boost PFC converter is first analyzed. The results show that three-level converter has the same average equation as the interleaved boost PFC converter. Then, ICSC is modified for the three-level boost PFC converter with considering the voltage imbalance and the zero-crossing current distortion. The proposed modified ICSC (MICSC) is implemented in a field-programmable gate array board. Simulation results and experimental results are also provided to validate the proposed MICSC. While current-mode control of dc–dc converters provides numerous benefits over voltage-mode control, previous models of the control strategy have been limited to the form of classical control models. Through the use of a state-space averaged (SSA) model of current-mode control, both the open-loop and closed-loop circuit parameters of open-loop control-to-output frequency response, conducted susceptibility, input admittance, output impedance, and any other desired response can be easily obtained. In this paper, SSA models of current-mode-controlled converters are derived and presented for buck, boost, and flyback topologies operating in continuous conduction mode. The new model allows for simpler and more accurate modeling than possible with previous methods, facilitates the modeling of cascaded converters, and allows for the use of state-variable feedback and other modern control methods in applications that use current-mode control. In a photovoltaic (PV)- or fuel-cell-based grid-connected power system, a high step-up dc–dc converter is required to boost the low voltage of a PV or fuel cell to a relatively high bus voltage for the downstream dc–ac grid-connected inverter. To integrate the advantages of the high voltage gain of a switched-capacitor (SC) converter and excellent output regulation of a switching-mode dc–dc converter, a method of combining the two types of converters is proposed in this paper. The basic idea is that when the switch is turned on, the inductor is charged, and the capacitors are connected in series to supply the load, and when the switch is turned off, the inductor releases energy to charge multiple capacitors in parallel, whose voltages are controlled by a pulsewidth modulation technique. Thus, a high voltage gain of the dc–dc converter can be obtained with good regulation. Based on this principle, a series of new topologies are derived, and the operating principles and voltage gains of the proposed converters are analyzed. Pulse train (PT) control technique realizes the output voltage regulation of switching dc–dc converters by using preset high power control pulse PH and low power control pulse PL. In steady state, PH and PL in some successive switching cycles constitute a control pulse repetition cycle. The control pulse combination of PH and PL in the control pulse repetition cycle has a significant effect on the performances of PT controlled switching dc–dc converters. In this paper, by taking PT controlled discontinuous conduction mode buck converter as an example, the control pulse combination of PT controlled buck converter is studied. Some lemmas to reveal the control pulse combination are presented, and the combination of PH and PL in a control pulse repetition cycle is obtained. Based on which, the steady-state and transient performances of PT controlled buck converter are investigated. This paper proposes a voltage balancing method for a flying capacitor multilevel converter based on the phase-disposition sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (PD-SPWM). This voltage balancing method uses redundant switching states, which are determined by the minimization of a cost function. The implementation of the PD-SPWM using standard triangular carriers leads to additional switching events that are due to the transitions within the same voltage level, thus increasing the switching frequency of the power devices. Such drawback can be avoided by using sawtooth carrier waveforms. Another characteristic of the proposed voltage balancing method is that it does not require the tuning of parameters to achieve optimal performance. An architecture of multiple-integrated converter modules sharing an unfolding full-bridge inverter with a pseudo dc link (MIPs) is proposed for grid-connected photovoltaic systems in this paper. The proposed configuration can improve the power conversion, the control circuit complexity, and the cost competitiveness. The proposed MIP is composed of distributed flyback dc–dc converters (DFCs) and an unfolding full-bridge inverter with an ac filter. The DFCs can eliminate the shading effect by using the individual maximum power point tracking. In conventional flyback-type single-phase utility-interactive inverters, discontinuous conduction mode and boundary conduction mode are popular because of the inherent constant current-source characteristics more desirable for grid connection and of the simple procedures for the controller design. However, the operating mode suffers from a large current stress of the circuit components, which leads to the low power efficiency. To avoid this, the DFCs operate under continuous conduction mode that allows reduced current stresses and increased power efficiency, as well as low material cost. The current control loop of the converters employs primary-side regulation contributing to improvement of dynamics as well as the cost reduction significantly due to the elimination of the high-linearity photocoupler device. Development of a new dc-current loop that maintains the level of dc-current injection into the grid within the levels stipulated by IEEE 1547 will be dealt as well. This paper presents a power factor corrected (PFC) bridgeless (BL) buck–boost converter-fed brushless direct current (BLDC) motor drive as a cost-effective solution for low-power applications. An approach of speed control of the BLDC motor by controlling the dc link voltage of the voltage source inverter (VSI) is used with a single voltage sensor. This facilitates the operation of VSI at fundamental frequency switching by using the electronic commutation of the BLDC motor which offers reduced switching losses. A BL configuration of the buck–boost converter is proposed which offers the elimination of the diode bridge rectifier, thus reducing the conduction losses associated with it. A PFC BL buck–boost converter is designed to operate in discontinuous inductor current mode (DICM) to provide an inherent PFC at ac mains. The performance of the proposed drive is evaluated over a wide range of speed control and varying supply voltages (universal ac mains at 90–265 V) with improved power quality at ac mains. The obtained power quality indices are within the acceptable limits of international power quality standards such as the IEC 61000-3-2. In the modern point-of-load (POL) applications, a number of low- and medium-power converters are used very close to the actual load. These applications require superior dynamic response and better power processing density to save space on the motherboard. Hysteretic modulators are one of the obvious choices for these applications because of their superior dynamic response with minimal number of filter capacitors. This paper presents a new carrier (synthetic ripple based)-generation-based digital hysteretic modulator for POL converters. The proposed structure creates a piecewise linear synthetic ripple using sensed converter voltages, without the need of direct inductor current sensing. The artificial synthetic ripple is then added to the output voltage and fed as a carrier to the hysteretic comparator, which helps in natural load current feedforward. This proposed digital modulator helps in the reduction of the output capacitors and exhibits superior large-signal dynamics for a POL converter. It is a simple solution and gives immediate fault detection (within one switching cycle) in case of the main switch (top MOSFET) failure of the converter, thus providing adequate protection to the microprocessor load.
