This paper proposes a new configuration for static ground power unit (GPU) based on the novel 25-level hybrid active neutral-point-clamped (HANPC) converter. The superiority of the proposed converter, as compared with conventional and other suggested multilevel converters, is significant decreasing the number of switches and minimizing the number of flying capacitors (FC) in converter. This improvement is possible by using suggested low-voltage submodule converter to the ANPC converter and proposed modulation method. This results in reduction of the size and cost of converter and makes it more feasible and reliable. Applying the active voltage balancing method for FC in the proposed HANPC converter guaranties fast charging and voltage-level regulation of FC without using balance booster circuit. Improving output voltage spectrum leads to inductance reduction of output L–C filter which enhances static GPU performance. In this paper, a novel cascaded seven-level inverter topology with a single input source integrating switched-capacitor techniques is presented. Compared with the traditional cascade multilevel inverter, the proposed topology replaces all the separate dc sources with capacitors, leaving only one H-bridge cell with a real dc voltage source and only adds two charging switches. The capacitor charging circuit contains only power switches, so that the capacitor charging time is independent of the load. The capacitor voltage can be controlled at a desired level without complex voltage control algorithm and only use the most common carrier phase-shifted sinusoidal pulse width modulation strategy. The operation principle and the charging–discharging characteristic analysis are discussed in detail. In this paper, the two-input buck converter is proposed as the dc/dc stage for photovoltaic (PV) cascaded converters. This converter is attractive for this application because it is cost effective and reliable and can achieve dual maximum power point tracking (MPPT) with only one power transistor. However, due to the simplified and integrated structure, the nonlinear characteristics of the converter and the two PV arrays complicate the control. By means of a small-signal modeling, the control theme of the two PV voltages is formulated, and the effect of the nonlinearities is presented. It is shown that, while fast voltage dynamics are achieved for the first input, the second-input voltage response depends on the second-stage converter control. Cascaded H-bridge multilevel power electronic converters generally require several dc sources. An alternative option is to replace all the separate dc sources feeding the H-bridge cells with capacitors, leaving only one H-bridge cell with a real dc voltage source. This will yield a cost-effective converter. However, the required capacitor voltage balancing is challenging. In this paper, using the phase-shift modulation approach, a new control method for cascaded H-bridge multilevel converters fed with only one independent dc source is presented. The proposed method has a wide voltage regulation range for the replacement capacitors in the H-bridge cells. Experimental and simulation results support the proposed control method. The five-level active neutral-point (NP)-clamped (ANPC) converter is a newly emerging topology which can overcome the drawbacks of traditional NP-clamped and flying-capacitor multilevel converters. This paper presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the NP potential balancing issue and demonstrates that the NP potential can be naturally balanced under ideal and steady conditions. An NP potential balancing method based on zero-sequence voltage injection is presented. By calculating the average NP currents of all key zero-sequence voltages, the most appropriate zero-sequence voltage is selected to generate the demanded NP current, which can also limit the switching frequency of the series-connected insulated-gate bipolar transistors to the fundamental frequency. A three-phase five-level ANPC inverter prototype is built up, and both steady and dynamic experimental results are presented to verify the validity of this method. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Power converters consisting of naturally commutated thyristors such as cycloconverters and current source inverters were the first to be used in driving electrical motors with variable speed, but now, due to their inferior performance compared to forced commutated converters, their use is restricted in the high voltage/high power range where the performance and cost of forced commutated switching devices are not yet competitive. Hybrid cycloconverters proposed recently are capable of improving the performance of cycloconverters by adding an auxiliary forced commutated inverter with reduced installed power. It will be shown that the new topology is not only able to improve the quality of the output voltage but is also able to enhance the control over the circulating current and, therefore, for some of the cycloconverter arrangements, to improve the input power quality.
