Motors and inverters are increasingly being used in vehicles. As more vehicle components are being adopted, requirement for safety and installation space are increasing. Growing attention is being paid to the use of six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and their parallel control by two inverters, because of their reduced size and enhanced safety. This paper proposes a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control algorithm for a six-phase PMSM. In low-voltage vehicle components such as electric power steering, the current is usually acquired with resistors placed under the low-side switching devices. In the proposed control algorithm, the neutral voltage of the two inverters is shifted to either a lower or higher voltage within a certain range to allow for the signal conditioning time delay after the switching device turns on or off, and the time taken for the phase current to rise or settle. The paper proposes a novel PWM control algorithm that ensures that the on-time of the low-side switching devices satisfies the restriction on current sensing with resistors and reduces the current in the capacitor at the same time. This paper proposes a new dc–ac converter with a reduced number of semiconductor switches and gate drive and control circuit components. A salient feature of this inverter is its pure sinusoidal line-to-line voltages with no need for output filter. Also, the proposed inverter improves the voltage utilization factor of the input dc supply compared to the four-switch three-phase inverter (first best topology in the literature from the number of switches point of view) and standard six-switch inverter with sine pulsewidth modulation. The proposed inverter is capable of operating with a wide range of output voltages from zero to the full value of the dc input voltage by appropriately altering the instantaneous duty cycle. A three-phase universal inverter with only three power switch has been proposed in this paper for the first time ever, to our knowledge. For the purpose of providing a good compromise between fast transient response and stability, a model predictive controller is proposed. All the design expressions have been derived. A comparison with other dc–ac converters is given to show the merits of the proposed converter. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. This paper analyzes the combination in a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHBI) based on transformers with the different turn ratios for increasing the voltage level and proposes the switching method for achieving the output voltage distribution among H-bridge cells (HBCs). The transformers used in this paper are connected to the output of the respective HBCs, and the secondary sides of all the transformers are connected in series for generating the final output voltage. Only one of the transformers, in particular, has a different turn ratio for increasing the output voltage level. In this paper, the possible turn ratio of the special transformer with a different turn ratio is discussed in detail, and a switching method based on the level-shifted switching method for the topology used in this paper is proposed. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. This paper proposes an effective sliding mode controller (SMC) for a grid-connected 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) inverter. The aim is to design a simple controller that deals effectively with the complex control problem of the PUC7 inverter (multiobjective control problem). The selection of the control actions is achieved according to the system state error at every sampling time, regardless of the previous values, which makes the control technique model-independent. The control algorithm evaluates online two cost functions (one for each state error), which are derived on the basis of sliding mode theory, and it selects the optimal control input in order to satisfy the reaching conditions of the two cost functions. Compared with the existing solutions, the proposed SMC technique ensures lower average switching frequency by tuning the hysteresis bandwidth of the capacitor-voltage error. The fast implementation, needless of gains tuning, and simple design procedure are the main features of the proposed algorithm. In this paper, a new Lyapunov-based model predictive controller is proposed for a 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) grid-connected inverter. A cost function of the proposed model predictive controller is designed from the system stability point of view, inspired by the Lyapunov control theory. The proposed controller eliminates the need for gains that are associated with cost function coefficients, as seen in classical model predictive control based controllers. Therefore, the control design problem is significantly simplified. In addition, the average switching frequency is also reduced, as shown in both simulation and experimental results, leading to a reduction in switching losses. Simulation and experimental tests, on a PUC7 lab prototype, demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed control system, in terms of high disturbance rejection, robustness to parameter mismatches, and fast dynamic response. The magnetic resonant wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a class E inverter has wide application in mid-range power transmission, especially for several megahertz scenario. However, it is cumbersome for the existing modeling and analysis methods to obtain the analytical solution to the system variables, which limits the evaluation of system characteristic. This paper proposes a nonlinear mathematical model for the WPT system with a class E inverter. The equivalent small parameter method (ESPM) is first adopted to solve the proposed six-order nonlinear model, and symbolic-form steady-state periodic solutions are yielded. During the whole solving process, only three iteration steps are needed for the proposed method. Compared with other existing modeling and analysis methods, the symbolic periodic results acquired by the ESPM exhibit sufficient accuracy by virtue of the combination of more higher harmonics. In this paper, a generalized switching modification method is proposed to reduce the root-mean-square (rms) current flowing into a dc-link capacitor in a dc–dc–ac structure consisting of a boost converter and a three-phase inverter. To analyze the current flowing into the capacitor, we analyze the currents at the respective converter and inverter sides. Based on this analysis, we derive an analytical method to find the modification time between the converter and inverter pulsewidth modulation (PWM) carriers through a Fourier series and approximation to facilitate real-time implementation. Real-time implementation of the modification time calculated by the derived method is described. To verify the validity of the proposed method, experimental results are presented based on a 1-kVA dc–dc–ac prototype. The proposed method has a better capacitor rms current reduction performance than the conventional method in various inverter power factors and PWM strategies. In this paper, a new topology for half-bridge Z-source inverter is proposed. The proposed topology has only one impedance network. Unlike to the conventional half-bridge inverter, the proposed topology can provide zero voltage level at the output. It also increases output voltage level and stabilizes it in the desired value. Capacitor voltage stress in the proposed topology is low, and, therefore, nominal voltage of capacitor and cost decreases. In this paper, the steady-state analysis of the proposed inverter in two new operations which are named synchronous operation of diodes and asynchronous operation of diodes is conducted based on mathematics calculations. A method to obtain high-voltage gains by cascading the Z-network and combining middle inductors is presented that leads to cost, size, and weight reduction. Zero-common-mode-voltage (CMV) operation of multilevel inverters results in reduced dc-bus utilization and reduced linear modulation range. In this paper, a method to increase the linear modulation range for zero-CMV operation without increasing the dc-bus voltage using a cascaded multilevel inverter with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the peak fundamental output voltage can be increased from 0.499 to 0.637  \textV\text{dc} with zero CMV inside the linear modulation range. Also, various pulse width modulation (PWM) switching sequences are analyzed in this paper, and the PWM sequence that gives minimum current ripple is used for the zero-CMV operation of the inverter. This paper presents a model predictive control technique applied to a dual-active bridge inverter where one of the bridges is floating. The proposed floating bridge topology eliminates the need for isolation transformer in a dual inverter system and therefore reduces the size, weight, and losses in the system. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, the floating inverter dc-link capacitor is charged to the half of the main dc-link voltage. A finite-set model predictive control technique is used to control the load current of the converter as well as the floating capacitor voltage. Model predictive control does not require any switching sequence design or complex switching time calculations as used for space vector modulation; thus, the technique has some advantages in this application. This paper presents a three-phase open-end winding induction motor drive. The drive consists of a three-phase induction machine with open stator phase windings and dual-bridge inverter supplied from a single dc voltage source. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, a floating capacitor bank is used for the second of the dual bridges. The capacitor voltage is regulated using redundant switching states at half of the main dc-link voltage. This particular voltage ratio (2:1) is used to create a multilevel output voltage waveform with three levels. A modified modulation scheme is used to improve the waveform quality of this dual inverter. This paper also compares the losses in the dual-inverter system in contrast with a single-sided three-level neutral point clamped converter. This paper presents a new reconfiguration module for asymmetrical multilevel inverters in which the capacitors are used as the dc links to create the levels for staircase waveforms. This configuration of the multilevel converter makes a reduction in dc sources. On the other hand, it is possible to generate 13 levels with lower dc sources. The proposed module of the multilevel inverter generates 13 levels with two unequal dc sources (2VDC and 1VDC). It also involves two chargeable capacitors and 14 semiconductor switches. The capacitors are self-charging without any extra circuit. The lower number of components makes it desirable to be used in wide range of applications. The module is schematized as two back-to-back T-type inverters and some other switches around it. Also, it can be connected as a cascade modular which leads to a modular topology with more voltage levels at higher voltages. The proposed module makes the inherent creation of the negative voltage levels without any additional circuit (such as H-bridge circuit). Nearest level control switching modulation scheme is applied to achieve high-quality sinusoidal output voltage. Due to the pulsating power at the inverter output terminals, the passive storage elements of the boost stage of the current-fed switched inverter (CFSI) contain a power frequency harmonic component (100 Hz), apart from dc and switching frequency components. In prior designs, the second harmonic component is suppressed by increasing the size of the input filter inductor and capacitor or by using additional circuits. This paper presents a complete characterization of a control-based approach to suppress the power frequency harmonic component in the input inductor current of a CFSI. It also presents a comprehensive characterization of the harmonic power redistribution. Using the proposed approach, it is demonstrated that the inductor value of a CFSI is reduced by 61% for the same peak-to-peak ripple. This leads to an improvement in the conversion ratio, efficiency, and power density of the overall converter. This paper explores a power-conversion system for single-phase transformerless ac module application. A nonisolated high-gain dc–dc stage is coupled with a doubly grounded dynamic dc-link inverter to implement the microinverter topology. The front-end boost stage steps up the single-module voltage to a higher dc voltage, typically to 200 or 400 V as required for the following inverter stage. It is a hybrid of an interleaved boost and switched capacitor concept capable of achieving high gain while simultaneously maintaining reduced voltage and current stress, and thus lowering switching and conduction loss for most of the switches. By directly connecting the grid neutral to the photovoltaic (PV) negative, the doubly grounded voltage swing inverter has the advantage of zero capacitive-coupled common-mode ground currents, critical for transformerless PV inverters. The two dc links of the inverter stage share the double-line frequency power decoupling with a combination of higher value of mean voltage and relatively large 120-Hz ripple component–the dynamic dc-link approach. Through an optimization algorithm, the decoupling capacitance is minimized enabling an all-film capacitor implementation while satisfying the converter's operating constraints over a wide range of power factors. In this paper, a fixed switching frequency model predictive current controller is designed and implemented on a sensorless five-level packed U-cell (PUC5) inverter interfacing the utility. The predictive control methodology is based on a voltage vector generation technique for the cost function optimization by nullifying its derivative. The aim of the controller is to allow a fixed-frequency operation with no iterations while operating as a utility line current regulator. A pulsewidth modulator based on employing PUC5 redundant switching states fixes the PUC5 auxiliary dc bus capacitor voltage to its desired level with no necessity of a regulator; the overall technique reduces system complexity with less sensors and no loops in the predictive algorithm making it suitable for industrial applications. Multilevel inverters are now-a-days being applied in electric vehicles (EV). Considering the dynamic operating conditions of an EV propelled by an induction motor, this paper proposes a flexible discontinuous modulation strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter that can shift modulation pattern seamlessly from sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) to discontinuous PWM (DPWM). The modulation scheme is generalized at each degree of discontinuity to ensure minimum switching losses for variable load power factors. Additionally, a hybrid voltage balancing strategy, which comprises two sets of compensating offset signals with complementary features, has been introduced to mitigate voltage deviation problem at neutral point of the inverter. The unique feature of the proposed hybrid balancing approach is that it generates uniform compensating neutral current regardless of the level of discontinuity. This results in identical and predictable voltage balancing dynamics for the entire modulation transition covering SPWM and DPWM. It has been shown that the proposed hybrid balancing strategy does not lose its unbalance compensation strength even during transition from one modulation pattern to another. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for wide variations in operating conditions is studied through extensive simulation, and validated in experimentation using a prototype NPC inverter with induction motor loads. Wireless power transfer with a self-tuning LCC inverter using pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controlled switched capacitor is proposed in this paper in order to compensate for the variations of Tx inductance. Usually, receivers contain magnetic and conductive materials for shielding and mechanical support. The inductance of the Tx coil is sensitive to the variation of Tx–Rx alignment because the interaction between the Tx coil and the Rx magnetic–conductive materials is also varied. It is shown that the detuning of the Tx inductance value exacerbates the losses in the LCC inverter. In the proposed method, the PWM duty ratio of a single capacitor adjusts the effective output impedance of the LCC inverter. The PWM feedback loop is designed such that the power factor and the real-part impedance of the LCC inverter are maximized. The PWM switch is turned on at zero voltage and turned off with low dv/dt, minimizing switching losses. Such a soft-switching tunable capacitor can handle higher power compared to the traditional hard-switching capacitor, p-n junction capacitor, or an analog IC capacitor. Another advantage of the proposed technique is the continuity in achievable capacitance value using only one capacitor. The feedback can be fully implemented by analog components, obviating the necessity of digital samplings, ADC/DACs, and microcontrollers. Soft-switching inverters can achieve high efficiencies and low switchdv/dtanddi/dt, but often impose additional stress on the switches due to their resonant behavior. Multicell converters, on the other hand, can process high voltages by arranging the switches to share the stress. This paper proposes a buck–boost multicell soft-switching inverter with inherent cell voltage balancing. Both the current and voltage stresses are shared by the cells. Soft-switching conditions are achieved for all switching transitions without any need for auxiliary circuitry or clamps. A multiple-winding transformer transfers energy between the terminals and provides galvanic isolation. In this paper, a three-level quasi-switched boost T-type inverter (3L qSBT2I) is proposed. A new pulse-width modulated (PWM) control method is presented to reduce the inductor current ripple of the qSBT2 I. In the introduced PWM technique, the shoot-through duty cycle is maintained constant to keep the modulation index as high as possible. Then, the only control parameters of the qSBT2I are the duty cycles of the two additional switches. By controlling the duty cycles of the two additional switches, the voltage gain of the proposed qSBT2 I can be improved to a value larger than that of the conventional 3L impedance source inverters. The steady-state analysis, operating principles, and comparisons with the impedance source-based 3L inverters are presented. A 1-kW prototype is constructed to verify the operating principle of the 3L qSBT2I. Microinverters operating into the single-phase grid from new energy source with low-voltage output face the challenges of efficiency bottleneck and twice-line-frequency variation. This paper proposed a multilevel inverter based on bridge modular switched-capacitor (BMSC) circuits with its superiority in conversion efficiency and power density. The topology is composed of dc–dc and dc–ac stages with independent control for each stage, aiming to improve system stability and simplify the control method. The BMSC dc–dc stage, which can be expanded to synthesize more levels, not only features multilevel voltage gain but also partially replaces the original bulk input capacitor and functions as an active energy buffer to enhance power-decoupling ability between dc and ac sides. In dc–ac stage, the control strategy of optimized unipolar frequency doubling sine-wave pulse width modulation is proposed to improve the quality of output waveform. Meanwhile, the multilevel voltage phase has been optimized to further reduce the power loss. Finally, a prototype has been built and tested. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. A three-level NPC inverter is completely mature and very well-established topology in high-power applications. However, the three-level NPC inverter has an inheritance problem of the neutral-point voltage unbalancing due to the split dc-link capacitors. This structure can cause large neutral-point voltage ripple. Furthermore, output currents of the three-level NPC inverter are distorted by the neutral-point voltage ripple. Therefore, the neutral-point voltage must be controlled. In this paper, a new DPWM method using two different offsets for the neutral-point ripple reduction is proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed DPWM method is verified by using the simulation and the experimental results. As inverters are often used in critical applications, reliability is an important issue. In particular, the power electronic switches and gate drivers, the most essential components of the inverter, are vulnerable parts in real live operation. Therefore, this paper focuses on open-switch fault detection for multilevel inverters. When a single-switch open-circuit fault occurs in one of the power electronic switches, the algorithm can detect the fault and the switch that is causing it. The detection is worked out for both a linear resistive inductive load and an induction motor. The proposed algorithm is an extension of an already available finite-set model-based predictive control algorithm. Therefore, no extra hardware or measurements are required. Multilevel inverters with dodecagonal (12-sided polygon) voltage space vector structure have advantages, such as complete elimination of fifth and seventh harmonics, reduction in electromagnetic interference, reduction in device voltage ratings, reduction of switching frequency, extension of linear modulation range, etc., making it a viable option for high-power medium-voltage drives. This paper proposes two power circuit topologies capable of generating multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure with symmetric triangles (for the first time) with minimum number of dc-link power supplies and floating capacitor H-bridges. The first power topology is composed of two hybrid cascaded five-level inverters connected to either side of an open-end winding induction machine. Each inverter consists of a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter, which is cascaded with an isolated H-bridge making it a five-level inverter. The second topology is for a normal induction motor. Both of these circuit topologies have inherent capacitor balancing for floating H-bridges for all modulation indexes, including transient operations. The proposed topologies do not require any precharging circuitry for startup. A simple pulsewidth modulation timing calculation method for space vector modulation is also presented in this paper. Due to the symmetric arrangement of congruent triangles within the voltage space vector structure, the timing computation requires only the sampled reference values and does not require any offline computation, lookup tables, or angle computation. This paper presents a comparison of two modulation methods for the seven-level switched-capacitor (SC) inverter using series/parallel conversion (SCISPC). The SCISPC is a multilevel inverter which has the less number of switching devices than the conventional multilevel inverters. The level-shifted pulsewidth modulation (PWM) (LS-PWM) was applied to the seven-level SCISPC in the previous research. In this paper, the level- and phase-shifted PWM (LPS-PWM) and the LS-PWM are applied to the seven-level SCISPC, and LPS-PWM is compared with LS-PWM for the seven-level SCISPC. The LPS-PWM has both the characteristics of the phase-shifted PWM (PS-PWM) and the LS-PWM. The voltage reduction during the discharging term of the SCs is reduced by means of the shorter discharging period compared to LS-PWM. The voltage ripple of the capacitors is also reduced, which leads to higher power conversion efficiency. This paper proposes the combination of a novel modified quasi-Z-source (MqZS) inverter with a single-phase symmetrical hybrid three-level inverter in order to boost the inverter three-level output voltage. The proposed single-phase MqZS hybrid three-level inverter provides a higher boost ability and reduces the number of inductors in the source impedance, compared with both the single-phase three-level neural-point clamped quasi-Z-source inverter and the single-phase quasi-Z-source cascaded multilevel inverter. Additionally, it can be extended to obtain the nine-level output voltage by cascading two three-level pulse width modulation switching cells with a separate MqZS and a dc source, which herein is called a single-phase MqZS cascaded hybrid five-level inverter (MqZS-CHI). A modified modulation technique based on an alternative phase opposition disposition scheme is suggested to effectively control the shoot-through state for boosting the dc-link voltage and balancing the two series capacitor voltages of the MqZS. This paper presents a nine-level active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) based multilevel inverter (MLI) topology for grid-connected applications requiring only ten switches. The envisaged structure comprises two parts, namely five-level ANPC unit, and a two-level converter leg whose midpoint is used as another ac terminal. An ad hoc switching state redundancy based modulation strategy is used to ensure that the voltage across the flying capacitor is tightly balanced and is implemented using a look-up table further simplifies the control complexity. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed topology with its control scheme are validated through simulations and experimental tests. Comparison with other MLIs is included to highlight the merits of the proposed topology. Cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverters (MLIs) have been widely used for power electronics systems. While high-voltage blocking across power switches is not a constraint for low voltage applications, the research trend has been oriented to the design of more compact module topologies as an alternative for CHB. Despite the generation of more voltage levels with reduced switch count, the existing module topologies in recent literature take no account of the freewheeling current path during dead-time, thus, inducing multistep jumps in voltage levels and giving rise to undesirable voltage spikes. Addressing this concern, this paper proposes two symmetrical compact-module topologies for cascaded MLI, where freewheeling current path during dead-time is provided for smooth transition between voltage levels to prevent voltage spikes. The proposed 7-level and 13-level compact-modules demonstrated low number of conducting switches for all voltage levels. Comprehensive analysis and comparison with the latest module topologies are conducted. In this paper, two switched-capacitor quasi-switched boost inverters (qSBIs) are proposed. By adding one capacitor and one diode to the qSBIs, the proposed inverters achieve high voltage gain with low voltage stress on active switches, capacitors, and diodes. The proposed inverters can extend to n-cell for voltage gain improvement. The operating principle, steady-state analysis, and impedance parameter selections of the proposed inverter are presented. A full comparison between the proposed inverter and other impedance-source inverters is addressed. A 500-W prototype is built to verify the operating theory of the proposed inverter in both the standalone mode and the grid-connected mode. In this paper, finite-set model-predictive control (FS-MPC) methodologies for a grid-connected three-level neutral-point-clamped converter are investigated. The proposed control strategies produce fixed switching frequency, maintaining all the advantages of predictive control such as fast dynamic response, inclusion of nonlinearities and restrictions, and multivariable control using a single control loop. The first of the proposed FS-MPC strategies is based on a multiobjective cost function, designed to regulate both the inverter currents and the balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages. The second FS-MPC strategy is derived from the first one, and it is based on a cost function that regulates only the grid current, with the balancing of the capacitor voltages being realized by controlling the duty cycles of the redundant vectors. The proposed control systems are experimentally validated using a 5-kW prototype. The experimental results show a good performance for both strategies, in steady-state and transient response, with a total harmonic distortion lower than \text2\% for the currents supplied to the grid. The hybrid modulation strategy using both low-frequency square-wave modulation and high-frequency pulse-width modulation can extend the stable operating region of a cascaded H-bridge converter. However, it does not control accurately dc voltages of converter but balances them by charging or discharging dc capacitors based on the state of system, which could aggravate fluctuation of dc voltages. If cascaded H-bridge converter is used in photovoltaic field, the aggravated fluctuation on dc capacitor voltages will result in further losses in energy harvesting of solar cells. To address this issue, a modified hybrid modulation strategy is presented in this paper. When dc-bus measured voltages are close to their reference voltages, these H-bridges operate in a zero mode. Adding appropriate zero state can prevent grid current charging or discharging the dc capacitors whose voltages have already reached their control goals. Therefore, the proposed technique is capable of suppressing dc voltage fluctuation, and, thus, improving the output power of solar cells. This paper presents an optimized topology of 3-$\phi$ , multilevel inverter (MLI) configuration for five or higher level operation with reduced switch count. The proposed solution consists of two basic units (BUs) of multilevel converter and a T-structured 3-level inverter (3-LI). Both BUs are equally shared by the three phases maintaining symmetry among the phases. Moreover, for a higher level operation of the proposed MLI, the modifications required are at two BUs only and not at three legs of the inverter. It further helps in reducing the requirement of extra components for higher level operation compared to the conventional solutions. Furthermore, the topology also has the benefits of reduced switching and conduction loss. An algorithm is also devised to generate the switching pulses for the BUs and the 3-LI, using a carrier-based space vector modulation technique. Presented topology is compared with other existing topologies to prove its advantage. Adding the auxiliary switches to the conventional H-bridge inverter is an effective way to eliminate the leakage current for transformerless PV systems, such as H5, H6, etc. Inspired by the newly developed embedded-switch H6 topology, a novel embedded-switch inverter (ESI) is proposed in this paper for three-phase transformerless PV systems. First, the operation principle and characteristics of the proposed ESI are analyzed. Second, the common-mode model of the three-phase ESI is established, based on which the main factors that affect the leakage current are discussed. The finding reveals that the switching states with conventional modulation strategy result in high-frequency common-mode voltage, which is the source of leakage current. In order to solve the problem, a new modulation strategy is presented for ESI to eliminate the high-frequency leakage current. Compared with multilevel space vector modulation, level-shifted multicarrier sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) for nested neutral point-clamped (NNPC) inverters requires much less calculations and implementation efforts, but the existing conventional SPWM cannot suppress the severe flying-capacitor (FC) voltage ripples under low output-frequency conditions. In order to solve this problem, a multicarrier-based PWM strategy with complete voltage balance control (VBC) capacity is proposed in this paper. For NNPC inverters operating under low output-frequency conditions, two preprocessing steps, the zero-sequence injection and the modulation-signal rearrangement, are proposed before the comparisons between level-shifted carriers and modulating signals. These preprocessing steps make the average currents flowing through FCs zero, which is beneficial to greatly reduce the FC voltage ripples under low output-frequency conditions. Together with additional VBC, the proposed modulation can assure the FC voltages balanced under the entire output-frequency conditions. Principles and implementation processes of proposed modulation techniques and VBC methodsare elaborated in detail and compared with conventional modulation methods. This paper proposes a high-efficiency two-stage three-level grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter. The proposed two-stage inverter comprises a three-level step-up converter and a three-level inverter. The three-level step-up converter not only improves the power-conversion efficiency by lowering the voltage stress but also guarantees the balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages using a simple control algorithm; it also enables the proposed inverter to satisfy the VDE 0126-1-1 standard of leakage current. The three-level inverter minimizes the overall power losses with zero reverse-recovery loss. Furthermore, it reduces harmonic distortion, the voltage ratings of the semiconductor device, and the electromagnetic interference by using a three-level circuit configuration; it also enables the use of small and low-cost filters. To control the grid current effectively, we have used a feed-forward nominal voltage compensator with a mode selector; this compensator improves the control environment by presetting the operating point. The proposed high-efficiency two-stage three-level grid-connected PV inverter overcomes the low efficiency problem of conventional two-stage inverters, and it provides high-power quality with maximum efficiency of 97.4%. This paper proposes a family of novel flying capacitor transformerless inverters for single-phase photovoltaic (PV) systems. Each of the new topologies proposed is based on a flying capacitor principle and requires only four power switches and/or diodes, one capacitor, and a small filter at the output stage. A simple unipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique is used to modulate the inverter to minimize the switching loss, output current ripple, and the filter requirements. In general, the main advantages of the new inverter topologies are: 1) the negative polarity of the PV is directly connected to the grid, and therefore, no leakage current; 2) reactive power compensation capability; and 3) the output ac voltage peak is equal to the input dc voltage (unlike neutral-point-clamped and derivative topologies, which requires twice the magnitude of the peak ac voltage). A complete description of the operating principle with modulation techniques, design guidelines, and comprehensive comparisons is presented to reveal the properties and limitations of each topology in detail. In this paper, an improved transformerless single-phase single-stage grid-tied flying inductor inverter is presented. The negative terminal of the photovoltaic (PV) array is grounded in the improved topology, which increases reliability and suppresses the leakage current. The proposed topology has buck–boost capability without increasing the number of required components and has a high efficiency. An improved control algorithm for proper operation of the proposed topology which decreases switching losses has been investigated. Moreover, a perturbation and observation maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm has been adapted to the proposed inverter, which does not utilize proportional–integral (PI) controllers, for the purpose of the MPPT. Furthermore, a design procedure of the passive elements of the converter based on the corresponding operating has been demonstrated. Photovoltaic (PV) microinverters dispense with the line frequency transformer, however at the cost of system grounding and ground leakage current problems. These have been erstwhile resolved by the topologies derived from buck, boost, buck–boost, Zeta, Watkins–Johnson, and Ćuk converters, or combinations of these. The Ćuk derived inverters, employing second-order input and output filters, offer the most efficient, lightweight, and economical solution in the class. This paper presents design and detailed operation of a Ćuk derived, common-ground PV microinverter in continuous conduction mode operation. The inverter is shown to be compatible with both linear and nonlinear loads, in stand-alone and grid-connected modes of operation. Optimal design rules of passive components are rigorously derived to ensure attenuation of input voltage ripples arising from the twin effects of switching and double-frequency output power oscillation. Additionally, the design rules also incorporate considerations of efficiency maximization and some aspects of easing control complexity. This paper presents the design and implementation of a simple neutral point potential (NPP) regulator for a three-level diode-clamped inverter employing a sine-triangle regulator in conjunction with a closed-loop controller with reduced switching losses. The regulator principle is based on adding a continuous variable offset voltage which regulates the midpoint potential of the dc bus. The novelty of the proposed NPP regulator is in the determination of the magnitude of variable offset voltage based upon the average value, peak-to-peak amplitude, total harmonic distortions, and third harmonic content in NPP. Aside from maintaining dc-bus voltage balance, the proposed regulator leads to a significant reduction in the voltage distortion at the NP, resulting in the reduction of the required dc-bus capacitance. It also reduces the switching losses of the inverter by inserting the “no-switching” zone within each half cycle of the fundamental voltage wave. The Z-source inverter (ZSI) employs an LC impedance network between the main inverter bridge and the power source. The unique feature of the ZSI is that it can operate either in buck or boost mode with a wide range of obtainable output voltages from a given input voltage. This topology also exhibits better electromagnetic-interference noise immunity when compared to a traditional voltage-source inverter (VSI). However, the LC impedance network of ZSI significantly increases the size and cost of the power converter and can make it unsuitable for low-power applications. This paper proposes a novel topology called switched boost inverter (SBI) which exhibits similar advantages of ZSI with lower number of passive components and more active components compared to ZSI. The steady-state and small-signal analyses of SBI, along with its pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control strategies, have been discussed in this paper. This paper also presents a comparison of SBI and ZSI with the same input and output parameters. The theoretical analysis given in this paper has been validated using a laboratory prototype of SBI, and the experimental results are presented for verification. The experimental harmonic spectrum of the inverter's output voltage with the proposed PWM technique is also plotted and compared with that of a traditional VSI. In this paper, an immune algorithm (IA) is developed for optimization of the harmonic performance of a three-phase inverter under the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation (SVPWM) control strategy. The presented algorithm employs the immune approach as the search method for finding the best optimal control vectors and action time of the three-phase inverter. As a result, the optimal control vectors and action time are calculated to minimize the objective function of the weighted total harmonic distortion of the output voltage waveforms. In addition, an experimental platform based on DSP and field-programmable gate array is built. This paper provides a detailed performance analysis of the method with comparison to the conventional SVPWM. A new pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is developed and presented in this paper. The proposed PWM scheme not only takes advantage of the special properties available in NPC inverters, but also reduces the switching loss of the inverter along with an inherent neutral point (NP) voltage control. Based on a circuit-level decoupling concept, the NPC inverter can be decoupled into two three-level Buck converters in every defined operating section, and thereby the controller design can be simplified. The salient features of the proposed scheme, as compared with the existing carrier-based DPWM strategies, are: 1) its reduced computational processing time, 2) its capability to balance the dc-link voltage without any additional control, and 3) its reduced complexity, e.g., only one carrier wave needed for pulse width modulating. Same as a space-vector modulation, the maximum modulation index, 1.1547, can be attainable by the proposed scheme. Moreover, compared to conventional continuous sinusoidal PWM, using this technique proposed here, the switching losses of the devices can be reduced by one third. In order to explain the operation of this topology properly, the decoupling principle including the driving signal synthesis and the NP potential variation are analyzed in detail in this paper. In this paper, a new cascade switch-ladder multilevel inverter topology is presented which can generate a large number of output voltage levels. First, a fundamental switch-ladder multilevel inverter structure is described. Then, the structure of recommended cascade topology based on series connection of fundamental switch-ladder topologies is presented. To generate maximum number of levels with minimum number of switching elements, dc sources, and voltage on switches, the proposed cascade topology is optimized. Comparison results prove that the presented cascade topology requires fewer numbers of components. Also, the value of voltage rating on switches is less than other structures. This paper proposes a unique carrier-based pulse width modulation strategy for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter that works satisfactorily and with uniform convergence time over the full power factor (PF) range of the load variation. It has excellent control over capacitor voltages and mitigates low-frequency oscillations in the neutral point for the full PF range. First, an investigation is made to see how the load currents get modulated to generate compensating neutral current causing charging and discharging of dc-link capacitors. It is observed that when an additional modulating voltage signal that is in phase with the corresponding phase current is added in each phase, a neutral current is produced in the right direction which can be used to compensate for any prior unbalance in capacitor voltages. It is demonstrated that the performance of this scheme is insensitive to the load PF variation (full range from zero to unity). It performs satisfactorily throughout the entire linear modulation range and eliminates any undesirable low-frequency harmonic component in the compensating neutral current. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through simulation and experimental results by varying load PF as well as modulation index with both passive and motor loads. The high number of power semiconductors in multilevel converters makes them susceptible to failure. Therefore, one of the main concerns in utilizing multilevel inverters is their reliability. This paper proposes a new simple fault-diagnosis and fault-handling method to increase the robustness and reliability of a flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMLI) which is one of the most prominent multilevel inverters. The proposed method is capable of diagnosing failed switch(es) and reconfiguring the switching sequence such that the output voltage is maintained similar to a normal operation condition. The proposed scheme identifies failed switch(es) by using the information about the charging state of the capacitors and the applied switching sequence. After identifying the failed switch(es), the algorithm bypasses the failed switch(es) and converts the control signals of the faulty leg from an M -cell L-level configuration to an (M-F)-cell L -level configuration (where F is the number of failed switches). The most attractive feature of the proposed control scheme is that any number of failed switches can be tolerated, as long as the number of functional switches is higher than the minimum number of cells required to build a full-binary L-level FCMLI. In this paper, the near-state pulse width modulation (NSPWM), adapted to be used in dual-voltage source inverter (VSI) fed open-end load, is introduced primarily aiming to appreciably minimize the voltage total harmonic distortion (THD). Within the framework of the proposed method, the active time of pulses at the second inverter is relatively adjusted within switching interval (compared to the first VSI). The phase voltage harmonics are formulated for dual-inverter modulated by NSPWM; then, optimal adjustment is identified via a three-dimensional curve of phase voltage THD versus modulation index (MI) and phase angle displacement (PAD). Due to the limitation of MI in NSPWM, the desired output voltage is synthesized with modifying not only MI but also PAD between references of two VSIs. Furthermore, NSPWM inherently takes advantage of better efficiency compared to conventional space vector modulation due to switching only two phases within an interval (by clamping one phase to positive/negative dc-rail). The dual-VSI supplied by two isolated dc sources is assembled in the laboratory to experimentally evaluate the THD reduction feature of the proposed method; also, the simulation results obtained by means of a MATLAB/Simulink environment show close agreement with experimental data. In this paper, a novel single-stage three-port inverter that connects photovoltaic (PV) panel to a single-phase power grid is introduced. In a single-phase grid-connected PV panel, the input power is constant during the line-frequency period, while the output power oscillates at double-line frequency. A series active power decoupling circuit utilizing thin-film capacitors is incorporated to a conventional flyback inverter to handle input and output power differences. Therefore, popularly low-reliable electrolytic capacitors are replaced with small long-lifetime thin film. The proposed inverter can extract the maximum power from PV, deliver a low total harmonic distortion sinusoidal current to the output, and decouple the input and output powers. The proposed power decoupling circuit shares the inverter main switch. Thus, these functions are achieved using just three switches and a simple control scheme which is applicable for both charging and discharging states. A novel flying-capacitor-clamped five-level inverter based on bridge modular switched-capacitor topology is proposed in this paper. The inverter features the switched-capacitor circuit with dc–dc boosting conversion ability and the multilevel inverter circuit with flying-capacitor-clamped performance. With the special composite structure, the number of components is cut down compared to the topology of the conventional cascaded multilevel inverter. Meanwhile, part of switches can be operated under line voltage frequency, resulting in switching loss reduction. Hence, the potential of system efficiency and power density is released due to embed switched-capacitor circuit. More importantly, the optimized carrier-based phase disposition pulse width modulation method is employed as a control strategy. Cascaded converters are adopted in many power systems to manage sources and loads at different voltage levels simultaneously. DC bus capacitor is one of the key components in these converters due to its energy storage and fast response capabilities. However, the ripple current through the capacitor will influence its lifetime and the overall efficiency of the converter. Previous studies showed that the capacitor current of ac systems is optimized when the duty cycles are synchronized under in phase or antiphase condition. In this paper, the bus capacitor ripple current of cascaded two-stage converters for dc systems with different combinations of duty cycles is analyzed. It is found that the optimum capacitor current ripple varies depending on the values of individual duty cycles and the phase-shift angle between them. By properly adjusting the phase shift, the capacitor RMS current value can be reduced without affecting the converter normal operation or the need for extra sensing circuits, hence improving the energy conversion efficiency and prolonging the capacitor lifetime with relatively simple implementation. To illustrate, a case study of a two-stage dc/dc converter is carried out. A laboratory prototype converter confirmed a maximum efficiency improvement of 2.8% if the phase shift is adjusted properly when compared to the same converter with the worst case phase-shift angle.
