In applications that demand single-input dual-output (SIDO) or dual-input single-output (DISO) dc–dc converters, employing two separate single-input single-output (SISO) converters is a solution. However, the number of components is doubled, resulting in high overall cost. In order to reduce costs, this paper proposes a novel topology synthesis methodology, with which a variety of SIDO and DISO dc–dc converters with reduced components can be derived. The principle of topology synthesis states that integrated SIDO and DISO dc–dc converters can be easily developed from conventional SISO converters by replacing a diode with a basic cell inclusive of additional input/output port. The principle is effective for many SISO dc–dc converters, and as an example, topology synthesis based on buck, boost, buck–boost, Cuk, sepic, and zeta SISO converters is performed in this paper. In order to achieve better understanding of the proposed converters, the integrated SIDO Cuk converter is specifically analyzed and experimentally verified. In comparison with the conventional scheme of two separate SISO Cuk converters, good cross regulation is retained while the number of diodes, inductors, and capacitors is reduced in the proposed SIDO Cuk converter. In addition, zero-voltage-switching operation of one switch is achieved, contributing to lower switching losses. This paper presents primary-side voltage regulated multitransformer quasi-resonant flyback converter (MTFC) for supplying isolated power switch drivers. The proposed topology offers distinct advantages over frequently used flyback converter possessing one high frequency transformer with isolated multiple outputs. Particularly, when a large number of separate dc supply units is required, then MTFC enables improved regular distribution of magnetic coupling between the common primary and the multiple secondary transformers’ windings providing a high degree of galvanic and electromagnetic isolation between multiple outputs. Primary side voltage regulation is based on the average output voltage estimation using auxiliary RDC circuit mounted across the primary windings. Operation principles of MTFC are enhanced with analytical study of cross regulation of multiple output voltages at unbalanced load conditions, indicating reduced voltage deviation of multiple outputs by applying the primary-side average voltage regulation. Experimental results of prototype 2-, 3-, and 6-transformer quasi-resonant flyback converters confirmed their cross regulation quality and application potential for independent multiple output supplies. In this paper, a fixed switching frequency model predictive current controller is designed and implemented on a sensorless five-level packed U-cell (PUC5) inverter interfacing the utility. The predictive control methodology is based on a voltage vector generation technique for the cost function optimization by nullifying its derivative. The aim of the controller is to allow a fixed-frequency operation with no iterations while operating as a utility line current regulator. A pulsewidth modulator based on employing PUC5 redundant switching states fixes the PUC5 auxiliary dc bus capacitor voltage to its desired level with no necessity of a regulator; the overall technique reduces system complexity with less sensors and no loops in the predictive algorithm making it suitable for industrial applications. System discrete model is developed and experimental results verify the performance of the designed controller in making a fast response in regulating the grid current and balancing the capacitor voltage. Series connection of individual semiconductors is an effective way to achieve higher voltage switches. However, the inherent unequal dynamic voltage sharing problem needs to be solved, even when well-matched gate drivers and semiconductors are used. A majority of the existing voltage balancing schemes are developed for slow-switching silicon (Si)-based semiconductors, and are also associated with a significant amount of additional losses in the control circuit or on the switches. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for balancing the dynamic voltages among series-connected silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs with highdv/dtrates. The method takes advantage of a small capacitor to provide additional current to the gate of the MOSFETs at turn-off, meaning the switching speed (and thus, the device voltage after turn-off) is controlled. The proposed method generates negligible losses in the control circuit, and also does not significantly increase the switching losses of the semiconductors. Experimental results are provided to prove the effectiveness of the proposed voltage balancing scheme on two SiC MOSFETs inside a module connected in series. The parameters of electrical energy such as voltage amplitude are very important, particularly from the viewpoint of the final consumer and sensitive loads connected to the grid. The dynamic states in the power grid—deep voltage sags and swells—might cause faults and defects in sensitive loads. This paper deals with a three-phase hybrid transformer (HT) without dc energy storage to compensate voltage sags and swells and to protect sensitive loads against the rapid and extensive changes in supply voltage amplitude. The analyzed HT contains two main units: the first one is the conventional electromagnetic transformer, realizing an electromagnetic coupling, and the second one is the buck–boost matrix-reactance chopper, realizing an electrical coupling in the HT unit. In the presented solution, output voltage is transformed in two ways—electromagnetically and electrically. This paper presents an operational description, the theoretical analysis, and the experimental test results from a 2-kVA laboratory model. On the basis of the authors' research, it can be stated that the HT makes it possible to compensate deep voltage sags (deeper than 50% of nominal source voltage) and overvoltages (up to 140% of nominal source voltage) while maintaining good dynamic properties. The main advantages of the proposed solution, in comparison to other conventional solutions, are the ability to control the output voltage in the range of 0.66–3.5 US, good dynamics (transient state during source voltage uS amplitude change is shorter than 10 ms), and galvanic separation between source and load (such as in the case of the conventional electromagnetic transformer). Cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverters (MLIs) have been widely used for power electronics systems. While high-voltage blocking across power switches is not a constraint for low voltage applications, the research trend has been oriented to the design of more compact module topologies as an alternative for CHB. Despite the generation of more voltage levels with reduced switch count, the existing module topologies in recent literature take no account of the freewheeling current path during dead-time, thus, inducing multistep jumps in voltage levels and giving rise to undesirable voltage spikes. Addressing this concern, this paper proposes two symmetrical compact-module topologies for cascaded MLI, where freewheeling current path during dead-time is provided for smooth transition between voltage levels to prevent voltage spikes. The proposed 7-level and 13-level compact-modules demonstrated low number of conducting switches for all voltage levels. Comprehensive analysis and comparison with the latest module topologies are conducted. The control loop stability in boost converters operating in continuous conduction mode has been restricted due to its nonminimum phase nature: the presence of a positive zero (right-half plane zero) in the control to output voltage transfer function. This paper proposes a method to mitigate the effect of the zero on the control loop by shifting the position of the zero to the left-half plane and hence leading to increased stability for the control loop of the boost converter. This paper presents a solution for the voltage balance problem of the series-connected devices that can be applied to multilevel converters in which the series-connected devices need to block twice their switched voltage. The solution is based on two ideas, the control of the switching commands to achieve proper switching losses balance and the use of additional circuitry to achieve proper voltage balance during their blocking state. The proposed strategy is experimentally validated into a 5-level multipoint clamped full-scale converter. Conventional hysteresis-modulation-based sliding-mode (SM) controller exhibits a varying switching frequency. Existing SM controllers for achieving constant-switching-frequency operation often have complicated structures and/or are less straightforward to design to meet different steady state, transient, and loading requirements. In this paper, a new direct SM voltage controller based on parabolic modulation (PM) is proposed and applied to a buck converter. The objective is to achieve constant-switching-frequency operation of a switching converter with simple control structure and good operating performance. Both theoretical study and experimental work on a buck converter show that the proposed PM-based SM control can achieve 1) constant switching frequency in the continuous-conduction mode (CCM) and quasi-constant switching frequency in the discontinuous-conduction mode (DCM) of operation, 2) inherent input-disturbances rejection and superior reference tracking performance, and 3) seamless mode transition between CCM and DCM. In this paper, a new type of matrix converter (MC) also called a single-phase high-frequency transformer isolated (HFTI) buck MC is proposed. The proposed converter can provide step-down operation of the input voltage with various types of output voltages such as in-phase and out-of-phase output voltages, rectified (or positive) output voltage, and output voltage with step-changed frequency. By incorporating HFT isolation, the proposed MC saves an extra bulky line frequency transformer, which is required for the conventional MCs to provide electrical isolation and safety, when used in application such as dynamic voltage restorers, etc. Two different circuit variations of the proposed HFTI MC are presented with and without continuous output currents, with the latter having less passive components. The safe-commutation strategy is also employed for the proposed HFTI MC to provide current path for the inductor during dead-time, which avoids switch voltage spikes without adding any snubber circuits. The operation principle and circuit analysis of the proposed MC are presented, and switching strategies are also developed to obtain various output voltages. This paper proposes a digitally implemented charge control for LLC resonant converters. By analyzing the small-signal characteristics of the resonant capacitor, it is revealed that the resonant capacitor has exactly the same functionality as a resettable integrator in the charge control for a PWM converter. Based on the analyzed results, the proposed charge control is implemented simply by sensing the voltage across the resonant capacitor in a switching period. The proposed method features simple implementation with resistive voltage divider and suitability for digital control as well as good performance as other multiloop controls have. The design guideline for the charge controller is given based on the loop gain analysis. This paper presents a novel soft-switching galvanically isolated buck-boost dc–dc converter as a module-integrated converter for photovoltaic (PV) applications. It features three major operating modes: boost, normal, and buck mode. Their proper distribution over the input voltage range enables wide voltage regulation capabilities, i.e., close to those of nonisolated power optimizers. The proposed control algorithm requires only one buck-boost switching stage that performs voltage regulation by means of the switching stage reconfiguration with smooth transition between the modes. The design guidelines and the digital control system for PV applications are provided. The module-integrated converter was verified experimentally with a solar array simulator. In this paper, a novel discontinuous current-source driver (CSD) is proposed, in which the power MOSFET gate-source voltage is increased to more than the drive supply voltage. The proposed CSD is able to recover gate energy dissipated in a conventional driver. In comparison to the conventional gate driver, the proposed CSD achieves fast switching speed to reduce switching losses. A wide range of operating duty cycle, low circulating losses, and high Cdv/dt immunity are other features of the proposed CSD. In comparison to previous discontinuous CSDs, the special advantage of the proposed circuit is power MOSFET gate voltage boosting, which leads to reduction of Rds(on) and, thus, the conduction loss. The proposed circuit is appropriate for voltage regulators (VRs) with synchronous rectifier and also it is suitable for two-stage 48-V power pod applications and low-voltage converters. Two-stage VR for laptop computer CPUs is another application of this gate driver circuit to improve light load performance. This paper presents a new multicell topology based on flying capacitor (FC) structure suitable for multilevel converters. The proposed topology employs the concept of phase-shifted carrier pulse width modulation (PWM) with modified modulating signals to generate appropriate PWM signals. The modulation strategy along with all possible switching states are explained. The implementation of the proposed PWM technique is shown by the help of illustrating waveforms. To show the advantages of the proposed structure, different performance criteria are compared with other FC multicell (FCM) structures. Simulation results are used to further evaluate the potential merits of the proposed topology. It is shown that the proposed structure is superior to other FCM-based structures from different standpoints. Specifically, it reduces the number of high-frequency switches, the number of FCs, and at the same time improves the quality of output voltage. This paper proposes a unified PWM method for matrix converters so as to establish a common platform which can generate various types of PWM methods in real time by adjusting the free parameters in the modulation algorithm. As a foundation for unification, the general form of the modulation functions for matrix converters is derived using geometric transformation approach. All eligible direct modulation matrices are shown to be of indirect form and are expressed in terms of instantaneous phase quantities. This paper also presents a new viewpoint to consider a matrix converter as a generalized three-level inverter and to apply the double-carrier-based dipolar modulation technique of the three-level inverter to the matrix converter. This paper proposes a novel family of cascade three-level (TL) ac–ac direct converters based on ac switch cells, which transfer unsteady high ac voltage with distortion into regulated sinusoidal voltage with low total harmonic distortion (THD). The topological family includes buck TL–boost, buck–boost TL, and buck TL–boost TL modes. In order to achieve a reliable TL ac–ac conversion, a double transient voltage feedback control strategy of the output voltage and the voltage across the flying capacitor is introduced in this paper. A 500-VA 220-V \pm10% 50-Hz ac/220-V 50-Hz ac prototype is presented with the experimental results to prove that the converters have four improved advantages simultaneously, including lower voltage across power switches, bidirectional power flow, low THD of output voltage, and higher input power factor. The flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMLI) is one of the well-known structures of multilevel inverters having attracted considerable attention because of its merits. In spite of its many advantages, it has some limitations such as high volume and complicated control method because of its bulky capacitors and their voltage balancing requirement. Moreover, the high number of power semiconductors required makes this structure susceptible to failure. To increase the ratio of the number of levels to the number of components, an uneven distribution of capacitor voltages has been suggested in previous reports; however, this approach complicates the control method. Up to now, almost all presented methods suffer from high computational load and/or structure-dependent algorithm. In this paper, a simple state-based and structure-independent method is proposed for capacitor voltage regulation. The proposed method is straightforward and can perform online computation of switching sequences in a computationally efficient manner without any need for stored information or look-up tables. The method is conveniently extendible to any number of cells and levels in an FCMLI structure with arbitrary dc link voltage distribution schemes. This paper presents a single-phase transformerless grid-connected photovoltaic converter based on two cascaded full bridges with different dc-link voltages. The converter can synthesize up to nine voltage levels with a single dc bus, since one of the full bridges is supplied by a flying capacitor. The multilevel output reduces harmonic distortion and electromagnetic interference. A suitable switching strategy is employed to regulate the flying-capacitor voltage, improve the efficiency (most devices switch at the grid frequency), and minimize the common-mode leakage current with the help of a novel dedicated circuit (transient circuit). This paper presents a novel switched Z-source isolated bidirectional dc–dc converter. The converter employs two unique switched impedance networks to couple the main circuit and the power source and load. Compared with the traditional isolated bidirectional dc–dc converter, the proposed converter has a wider regulation range of voltage. In addition, due to the fully symmetrical circuit configuration, there is neither a high-voltage side nor a low-voltage side in the circuit structure, and the sources connected to the dc side of each H-bridge can be both voltage sources and current sources. At the same time, the converter can bear shoot-through phenomenon in H-bridges, so it has high reliability. The topology configuration and operating principle of this converter are analyzed, and a unique phase-shifting shoot-through bivariate coordinated control strategy is designed and implemented. This paper extends the Z-source concept to matrix converters and explores a family of Z-source matrix converters. Their principles and characteristics are analyzed, and a simplified voltage-fed Z-source matrix converter is used as an example to demonstrate its operation, voltage gain versus modulation index, PWM method, boost control, and implementation of the control. Both simulation and experimental results verify operation of the proposed Z-source matrix converter, analytical results, and control method. The Z-source converters can achieve buck and boost operation with reduced number of switches needed, therefore achieving low cost, high efficiency, and reliability, compared to the traditional matrix converters. The matrix converter is an array of controlled bi-directional semi-conductor switches that allows direct ac–ac conversion without an intermediate dc link. This converter has several attractive features that have been investigated in the last two decades. Multilevel converter technology has become increasingly popular in recent years due to high power quality, high-voltage capability, low switching losses and low EMI issues. This paper is concerned with applying multilevel techniques to direct ac–ac power converters and concentrates on developing the concepts of space vector modulation for a multilevel matrix converter. The design and characterization in high-voltage (HV)-CMOS technology of an innovative intelligent power switch (IPS) for harsh automotive applications is proposed in this paper. To safely handle the ordinary and extraordinary automotive electrical and environmental conditions, a systematic design flow is followed: several design solutions are presented at the architectural and circuital level, integrating on-chip self-diagnostic capabilities and full protection against the high voltage and reverse polarity, the effects of wiring parasitics, and the over-current and over-temperature phenomena. Moreover, the current slope and soft start integrated techniques ensure a low electromagnetic interference, and the IPS is also configurable to efficiently drive different interchangeable loads. The innovative IPS has been implemented in a 0.35-\mu\m HV-CMOS technology and has been embedded in mechatronic third generation brush-holder regulator system-on-chip for an automotive alternator. The electrical simulations and experimental characterization and the testing at component and on-board system levels prove that the proposed design allows a compact and smart power switch realization facing the harshest automotive conditions.
