2. An Innovative Pipe Inspection Tool Utilizing Electromagnetic Resonance Coupling and Machine Learning

Abstract

This article describes an advanced tool that uses electromagnetic resonance coupling and machine learning techniques to detect and characterize metal loss on the inner surface of a metallic pipe. The proposed tool uses a transmitter coil placed along the axis of the pipe and four sensor coils installed around the transmitter coil. Any defect on the pipe surface leads to changes in the impedance of the transmitter and sensor coils as well as in the mutual coupling between them, thus creating a detectable variation in the outputs of one or multiple sensor coils. An artificial neural network is developed to reconstruct two-dimensional pipe cross-sections and to completely characterize the defects using these variations. The proposed tool is tested and validated via simulations, and data are collected using an experimental prototype. Results show that the tool can fully characterize the size, location (azimuthal angle), and level (thickness) of metal loss.

Abstract

This paper presents a new high-voltage pulse generator, which is based on positive and negative buck-boost (BB) converters fed from a relatively low voltage dc supply. The proposed generator is able to generate unipolar or bipolar high-voltage pulses via operating the BB converters with series or parallel connected outputs respectively using a common input dc source. The components of each converter are rated at half of the pulsed voltage magnitude in the unipolar mode. The converters in the proposed pulse generator operate in discontinuous conduction mode. This enhances system efficiency, as the circuit only operates when it is desired to generate a pulsed output voltage, otherwise the circuit is switched to idle mode with zero current. Detailed illustration of the proposed approach is presented along with a full design of the system components for given output pulse specifications. Abstract

The increased integration of fuel cells with power electronics, critical loads, and control systems has prompted recent interest in accurate electrical terminal models of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. Advancement in computing technologies, particularly parallel computation techniques and various real-time simulation tools, has allowed the prototyping of novel apparatus to be investigated in a virtual system under a wide range of realistic conditions repeatedly, safely, and economically. This paper builds upon both advancements and provides a means of optimized model construction boosting the computation speeds for a fuel cell terminal model on a real-time simulator which can be used in a power hardware-in-the-loop application. An elaborate simulation model of the fuel cell stack system has been developed, and a significant improvement in the computation time has been achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed model developed on Opal RT's RT-LAB MATLAB/Simulink-based real-time engineering simulator is verified using the experimental results with a Ballard Nexa fuel cell stack system.
