In this paper, a new modular and active snubber cell, easily applicable, and attractive for converters, especially have many switches proposed. This snubber cell is implemented on the single phase of a grid-connected three-phase T-type three-level inverter (T-3LI). In this new converter, the main switches turn-on under zero-voltage transition and turn-off under zero-voltage switching (ZVS). Also, auxiliary switches turn-on under zero-current switching and turn-off under ZVS. All snubber diodes operate under soft switching (SS). There are no additional current and voltage stresses on the main switches. During an SS operation, the switching energies are transferred to a dc voltage source. Then, these energies are processed to input with an independent dc–dc converter. Thus, all switching energies are recycled. In this paper, the principle operation and steady-state analysis of the modular and active snubber cell for a single-phase T-3LI are presented and experimental results, rated 1 kW and 100 kHz, are provided to verify theoretical analysis. A space vector modulation (SVM) technique of a dual-inverter system for an open-end winding motor drive is described in this paper, where one inverter has a battery power source and the other has an only capacitor across the dc bus. The SVM must be achieved to operate the motor with field-oriented control and simultaneously to control the capacitor voltage at a constant value by using redundant switching states of the dual-inverter system. The control of the capacitor voltage is carried out by selecting a charging or a discharging mode in each redundant switching state, taking the instantaneous motor power factor into account. In addition, it is also required to reduce the error voltage pulses, which are generated in output multilevel voltage waveforms during the dead time. The compensation method of the existing dead-time scheme and the improved SVM sequence to reduce the error voltage vectors are proposed in this paper. Multilevel inverters with dodecagonal (12-sided polygon) voltage space vector structure have advantages, such as complete elimination of fifth and seventh harmonics, reduction in electromagnetic interference, reduction in device voltage ratings, reduction of switching frequency, extension of linear modulation range, etc., making it a viable option for high-power medium-voltage drives. This paper proposes two power circuit topologies capable of generating multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure with symmetric triangles (for the first time) with minimum number of dc-link power supplies and floating capacitor H-bridges. The first power topology is composed of two hybrid cascaded five-level inverters connected to either side of an open-end winding induction machine. Each inverter consists of a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter, which is cascaded with an isolated H-bridge making it a five-level inverter. The second topology is for a normal induction motor. Both of these circuit topologies have inherent capacitor balancing for floating H-bridges for all modulation indexes, including transient operations. The proposed topologies do not require any precharging circuitry for startup. A simple pulsewidth modulation timing calculation method for space vector modulation is also presented in this paper. Due to the symmetric arrangement of congruent triangles within the voltage space vector structure, the timing computation requires only the sampled reference values and does not require any offline computation, lookup tables, or angle computation. In photovoltaic systems, common-mode voltage (CMV) generates leakage current, which shortens the insulation lifespan and causes safety problems. As for neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters, zero CMV PWM (ZCMV PWM) can be implemented to eliminate leakage current, but unable to balance neutral-point (NP) voltage in dc side. This article presents a novel modulation technique for NPC PV inverter. The strategy contains ZCMV PWM and another two modulation modes which keeps CMV constant in one switching period, so as to eliminate leakage current. In order to balance NP voltage, NP current is adjusted by selection of optimal modulation mode and the leakage current is still well eliminated during the process of balancing NP voltage. Compared with conventional ZCMV PWM, the proposed scheme can remove both leakage current and NP voltage deviation. Reduced switch active phase converters (APC) are cost-effective solutions for running three-phase loads from single-phase grids. This paper proposes a novel auxiliary-capacitor-based APC (AC-APC) for this application. The combination of the topological location of the auxiliary capacitor and the control of the AC-APC reduces current stress on the semiconductor devices. In this paper, a selection criterion for the optimal auxiliary capacitor value is formulated to reduce the device currents in such a way that the overall efficiency is enhanced. This paper presents a comparative analysis of converter volt-ampere (VA) rating and device power loss for conventional H-bridge active front-end and inverter-based topology, APC, and AC-APC. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed AC-APC, an experimental study is conducted on the APC and the AC-APC feeding a 3-hp three-phase induction motor. At a full load of $\text{2.5}\,\text{kW}$ and $\text{0.8 } \text{power factor}$ , the measured maximum efficiency of the AC-APC is $2\%$ higher than that of the APC. Motors and inverters are increasingly being used in vehicles. As more vehicle components are being adopted, requirement for safety and installation space are increasing. Growing attention is being paid to the use of six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and their parallel control by two inverters, because of their reduced size and enhanced safety. This paper proposes a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control algorithm for a six-phase PMSM. In low-voltage vehicle components such as electric power steering, the current is usually acquired with resistors placed under the low-side switching devices. In the proposed control algorithm, the neutral voltage of the two inverters is shifted to either a lower or higher voltage within a certain range to allow for the signal conditioning time delay after the switching device turns on or off, and the time taken for the phase current to rise or settle. The paper proposes a novel PWM control algorithm that ensures that the on-time of the low-side switching devices satisfies the restriction on current sensing with resistors and reduces the current in the capacitor at the same time. Multilevel inverters are now-a-days being applied in electric vehicles (EV). Considering the dynamic operating conditions of an EV propelled by an induction motor, this paper proposes a flexible discontinuous modulation strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter that can shift modulation pattern seamlessly from sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) to discontinuous PWM (DPWM). The modulation scheme is generalized at each degree of discontinuity to ensure minimum switching losses for variable load power factors. Additionally, a hybrid voltage balancing strategy, which comprises two sets of compensating offset signals with complementary features, has been introduced to mitigate voltage deviation problem at neutral point of the inverter. The unique feature of the proposed hybrid balancing approach is that it generates uniform compensating neutral current regardless of the level of discontinuity. This results in identical and predictable voltage balancing dynamics for the entire modulation transition covering SPWM and DPWM. It has been shown that the proposed hybrid balancing strategy does not lose its unbalance compensation strength even during transition from one modulation pattern to another. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for wide variations in operating conditions is studied through extensive simulation, and validated in experimentation using a prototype NPC inverter with induction motor loads. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. This paper analyzes the combination in a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHBI) based on transformers with the different turn ratios for increasing the voltage level and proposes the switching method for achieving the output voltage distribution among H-bridge cells (HBCs). The transformers used in this paper are connected to the output of the respective HBCs, and the secondary sides of all the transformers are connected in series for generating the final output voltage. Only one of the transformers, in particular, has a different turn ratio for increasing the output voltage level. In this paper, the possible turn ratio of the special transformer with a different turn ratio is discussed in detail, and a switching method based on the level-shifted switching method for the topology used in this paper is proposed. This paper presents a new multilevel converter topology based on a variable or multilevel dc-link stage. This stage is shared by all inverter output phases, thus increasing the number of output voltage levels while reducing the overall number of active devices compared to traditional topologies; therefore, it is called a reduced multilevel converter (RMC). The converter is not capable of reducing the blocking voltage of the devices; hence, unlike other multilevel converters aimed at medium-voltage applications, this converter is interesting for low-voltage- and high-power-quality-demanding applications such as photovoltaic inverters, wind energy conversion systems, and uninterruptible power supplies. The main novelty behind the proposed concept is the basic dc cell used to generate the variable dc-link voltage, which includes a controlled path through the floating capacitors to provide the necessary degree of control to enable a shared multilevel dc link for all the output phases of the converter. The dc cells are connected in a multicell structure to increase the number of levels of the converter. A five-level version of the RMC topology is briefly compared to other five-level converters such as the five-level active neutral-point-clamped converter and the five-level flying capacitor converter. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. As inverters are often used in critical applications, reliability is an important issue. In particular, the power electronic switches and gate drivers, the most essential components of the inverter, are vulnerable parts in real live operation. Therefore, this paper focuses on open-switch fault detection for multilevel inverters. When a single-switch open-circuit fault occurs in one of the power electronic switches, the algorithm can detect the fault and the switch that is causing it. The detection is worked out for both a linear resistive inductive load and an induction motor. The proposed algorithm is an extension of an already available finite-set model-based predictive control algorithm. Therefore, no extra hardware or measurements are required. This paper proposes an effective sliding mode controller (SMC) for a grid-connected 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) inverter. The aim is to design a simple controller that deals effectively with the complex control problem of the PUC7 inverter (multiobjective control problem). The selection of the control actions is achieved according to the system state error at every sampling time, regardless of the previous values, which makes the control technique model-independent. The control algorithm evaluates online two cost functions (one for each state error), which are derived on the basis of sliding mode theory, and it selects the optimal control input in order to satisfy the reaching conditions of the two cost functions. Compared with the existing solutions, the proposed SMC technique ensures lower average switching frequency by tuning the hysteresis bandwidth of the capacitor-voltage error. The fast implementation, needless of gains tuning, and simple design procedure are the main features of the proposed algorithm. This paper proposes a new multilevel inverter (MLI) topology that utilizes trinary sequence for the dc sources. It gives maximum output voltage level with minimum dc source and switch count when compared to other sequences, such as symmetric, natural, binary, and quasi-linear. This is due to the fact that the trinary sequence generates of all additive and subtractive combinations of input dc levels in the output voltage waveform. The concept is implemented on a 9-level asymmetric MLI using only four active devices. Multicarrier unipolar pulsewidth modulation technique is adopted to create the switching pulses. Theoretical calculation of total harmonic distortion in both voltage and current waveforms has been performed using asymptotic time domain formula. This paper presents a 5-level inverter topology for open-end induction motor drives by using a single dc source. The open stator windings of the drive are supplied with a 3-level flying capacitor inverter from one end and capacitor-fed 2-level inverter from another end. The voltage ratio of the dc link to the capacitor in 2-level inverter is maintained at 4:1 ratio to generate five-level voltage output. The capacitor in 2-level inverter is balanced by the switching redundant vector combinations from both the inverters while the floating capacitors in the 3-level inverter are balanced by using redundant switching states. The proposed topology gives 5-level operation with less number of floating capacitors and power semiconductor switches compared to other existing topologies. Also, the balancing of the capacitors is independent of load power factor and modulation index. This paper presents the current control design procedure of a single-phase grid-tied five-level packed U-cell inverter (PUC5) with an LCL output filter. The PUC5 inverter is used as an interface of renewable energy sources, such as solar applications. The LCL filter is calculated according to the grid-tied operation and converter ratings. An optimal controller, based on a linear quadratic regulator with integral action, is designed to inject a sinusoidal current with low harmonic distortion at unity power factor. For that design, the PUC5 inverter is modelled in the D–Q frame. The sensorless voltage control is incorporated into the switching technique to balance the PUC5 capacitor voltage and generate a five-level waveform at the output. Experimental tests are performed on a laboratory benchmark to confirm the theoretical design. The results prove the efficiency and accuracy of the adopted control strategy in a steady state and under transients of grid current, grid inductance, ac and dc voltage amplitudes. In this paper, many impedance-source inverters with coupled inductors have been investigated to obtain a high step-up boost ratio. However, the leakage inductors in these topologies induce great voltage spikes at the dc link, which will increase the voltage stress of switches. Thus, the power level of inverters is limited. Furthermore, the efficiency of the inverters can be degraded by the losses associated with leakage inductors. To address abovementioned issues, this paper proposes a family of low-spike high-efficiency Y-source inverters. The proposed inverters have the ability of eliminating voltage spikes at the dc link and recycling the leakage energy via the additional diode and capacitor. In order to show the excellent characteristics of the proposed topologies, this paper compares the performances of the proposed inverters and the improved-Y-source inverter in many aspects. In this paper, a model predictive scheme is proposed to control the grid-connected high-power four-level diode-clamped inverter. To predict the future behavior of active and reactive grid power values and dc link capacitor voltages, a discrete-time model of the inverter is developed in synchronous reference frame. The controller uses all the possible switching states of the inverter for the prediction and evaluates them using a cost function. The switching state, which minimizes the cost function, is then chosen and applied at the next sampling interval. The switching frequency minimization is also achieved by including an extra constraint in the cost function. A simplified extrapolation method with reduced computational burden is proposed to safeguard the semiconductor devices during the dynamic changes in reference power values. The performance of the proposed method is investigated with the perturbations in the grid filter and dc link parameters. The Z-source inverter (ZSI) employs an LC impedance network between the main inverter bridge and the power source. The unique feature of the ZSI is that it can operate either in buck or boost mode with a wide range of obtainable output voltages from a given input voltage. This topology also exhibits better electromagnetic-interference noise immunity when compared to a traditional voltage-source inverter (VSI). However, the LC impedance network of ZSI significantly increases the size and cost of the power converter and can make it unsuitable for low-power applications. This paper proposes a novel topology called switched boost inverter (SBI) which exhibits similar advantages of ZSI with lower number of passive components and more active components compared to ZSI. The steady-state and small-signal analyses of SBI, along with its pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control strategies, have been discussed in this paper. This paper also presents a comparison of SBI and ZSI with the same input and output parameters. The theoretical analysis given in this paper has been validated using a laboratory prototype of SBI, and the experimental results are presented for verification. The experimental harmonic spectrum of the inverter's output voltage with the proposed PWM technique is also plotted and compared with that of a traditional VSI. In this paper, a new topology for half-bridge Z-source inverter is proposed. The proposed topology has only one impedance network. Unlike to the conventional half-bridge inverter, the proposed topology can provide zero voltage level at the output. It also increases output voltage level and stabilizes it in the desired value. Capacitor voltage stress in the proposed topology is low, and, therefore, nominal voltage of capacitor and cost decreases. In this paper, the steady-state analysis of the proposed inverter in two new operations which are named synchronous operation of diodes and asynchronous operation of diodes is conducted based on mathematics calculations. A method to obtain high-voltage gains by cascading the Z-network and combining middle inductors is presented that leads to cost, size, and weight reduction. Zero-common-mode-voltage (CMV) operation of multilevel inverters results in reduced dc-bus utilization and reduced linear modulation range. In this paper, a method to increase the linear modulation range for zero-CMV operation without increasing the dc-bus voltage using a cascaded multilevel inverter with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the peak fundamental output voltage can be increased from 0.499 to 0.637  \textV\text{dc} with zero CMV inside the linear modulation range. Also, various pulse width modulation (PWM) switching sequences are analyzed in this paper, and the PWM sequence that gives minimum current ripple is used for the zero-CMV operation of the inverter. In this paper, a new Lyapunov-based model predictive controller is proposed for a 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) grid-connected inverter. A cost function of the proposed model predictive controller is designed from the system stability point of view, inspired by the Lyapunov control theory. The proposed controller eliminates the need for gains that are associated with cost function coefficients, as seen in classical model predictive control based controllers. Therefore, the control design problem is significantly simplified. In addition, the average switching frequency is also reduced, as shown in both simulation and experimental results, leading to a reduction in switching losses. Simulation and experimental tests, on a PUC7 lab prototype, demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed control system, in terms of high disturbance rejection, robustness to parameter mismatches, and fast dynamic response. The magnetic resonant wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a class E inverter has wide application in mid-range power transmission, especially for several megahertz scenario. However, it is cumbersome for the existing modeling and analysis methods to obtain the analytical solution to the system variables, which limits the evaluation of system characteristic. This paper proposes a nonlinear mathematical model for the WPT system with a class E inverter. The equivalent small parameter method (ESPM) is first adopted to solve the proposed six-order nonlinear model, and symbolic-form steady-state periodic solutions are yielded. During the whole solving process, only three iteration steps are needed for the proposed method. Compared with other existing modeling and analysis methods, the symbolic periodic results acquired by the ESPM exhibit sufficient accuracy by virtue of the combination of more higher harmonics. Soft-switching inverters can achieve high efficiencies and low switchdv/dtanddi/dt, but often impose additional stress on the switches due to their resonant behavior. Multicell converters, on the other hand, can process high voltages by arranging the switches to share the stress. This paper proposes a buck–boost multicell soft-switching inverter with inherent cell voltage balancing. Both the current and voltage stresses are shared by the cells. Soft-switching conditions are achieved for all switching transitions without any need for auxiliary circuitry or clamps. A multiple-winding transformer transfers energy between the terminals and provides galvanic isolation. This paper proposes a new dc–ac converter with a reduced number of semiconductor switches and gate drive and control circuit components. A salient feature of this inverter is its pure sinusoidal line-to-line voltages with no need for output filter. Also, the proposed inverter improves the voltage utilization factor of the input dc supply compared to the four-switch three-phase inverter (first best topology in the literature from the number of switches point of view) and standard six-switch inverter with sine pulsewidth modulation. The proposed inverter is capable of operating with a wide range of output voltages from zero to the full value of the dc input voltage by appropriately altering the instantaneous duty cycle. A three-phase universal inverter with only three power switch has been proposed in this paper for the first time ever, to our knowledge. This paper presents a model predictive control technique applied to a dual-active bridge inverter where one of the bridges is floating. The proposed floating bridge topology eliminates the need for isolation transformer in a dual inverter system and therefore reduces the size, weight, and losses in the system. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, the floating inverter dc-link capacitor is charged to the half of the main dc-link voltage. A finite-set model predictive control technique is used to control the load current of the converter as well as the floating capacitor voltage. Model predictive control does not require any switching sequence design or complex switching time calculations as used for space vector modulation; thus, the technique has some advantages in this application. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. A three-level NPC inverter is completely mature and very well-established topology in high-power applications. However, the three-level NPC inverter has an inheritance problem of the neutral-point voltage unbalancing due to the split dc-link capacitors. This structure can cause large neutral-point voltage ripple. Furthermore, output currents of the three-level NPC inverter are distorted by the neutral-point voltage ripple. Therefore, the neutral-point voltage must be controlled. In this paper, a new DPWM method using two different offsets for the neutral-point ripple reduction is proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed DPWM method is verified by using the simulation and the experimental results. This paper proposes an improved performance interactive distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) to address the limitations of conventional current control mode (CCM) and voltage control mode (VCM) operations. The proposed interactive scheme provides smooth transfer of modes of operation while remaining connected in the distribution system. In normal operation, the DSTATCOM operates in CCM to make source currents balanced, sinusoidal, and at a unity power factor. During voltage disturbances, the CCM operation cannot improve load voltage. In that case, DSTATCOM operation is changed to VCM, which maintains a constant voltage across the sensitive loads. Hence, this interactive DSTATCOM ensures continuous, flexible, and robust operation of the load. Moreover, the filter current requirements are reduced in the proposed scheme, which reduces the losses in the filter and feeder, improves inverter efficiency, and requires a reduced-rating inverter for sag mitigation. The principle of operation and control for both operating modes is analyzed. The detailed process of the flexible transfer between the two modes is derived. This paper proposes a technique to suppress low-order harmonics for an open-end winding induction motor drive for a full modulation range. One side of the machine is connected to a main inverter with a dc power supply, whereas the other inverter is connected to a capacitor from the other side. Harmonic suppression (with complete elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonics) is achieved by realizing dodecagonal space vectors using a combined pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control for the two inverters. The floating capacitor voltage is inherently controlled during the PWM operation. The proposed PWM technique is shown to be valid for the entire modulation range, including overmodulation and six-step mode of operation of the main inverter. This paper proposes an improved half-bridge inverter with wide-input-voltage capability for ozone-driven circuits. The study is motivated because the limited regulation of input voltage often affects the operation flexibility of ozone-driven circuits. Therefore, a modification of a half-bridge inverter along with a multiwinding coil design is proposed in this study, anticipating an increase in the range of input voltage and benefiting the industry applications. To confirm the practicality of this method, a hardware circuit was made with extensive validation. In this paper, finite-set model-predictive control (FS-MPC) methodologies for a grid-connected three-level neutral-point-clamped converter are investigated. The proposed control strategies produce fixed switching frequency, maintaining all the advantages of predictive control such as fast dynamic response, inclusion of nonlinearities and restrictions, and multivariable control using a single control loop. The first of the proposed FS-MPC strategies is based on a multiobjective cost function, designed to regulate both the inverter currents and the balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages. The second FS-MPC strategy is derived from the first one, and it is based on a cost function that regulates only the grid current, with the balancing of the capacitor voltages being realized by controlling the duty cycles of the redundant vectors. The proposed control systems are experimentally validated using a 5-kW prototype. The experimental results show a good performance for both strategies, in steady-state and transient response, with a total harmonic distortion lower than \text2\% for the currents supplied to the grid. Adding the auxiliary switches to the conventional H-bridge inverter is an effective way to eliminate the leakage current for transformerless PV systems, such as H5, H6, etc. Inspired by the newly developed embedded-switch H6 topology, a novel embedded-switch inverter (ESI) is proposed in this paper for three-phase transformerless PV systems. First, the operation principle and characteristics of the proposed ESI are analyzed. Second, the common-mode model of the three-phase ESI is established, based on which the main factors that affect the leakage current are discussed. The finding reveals that the switching states with conventional modulation strategy result in high-frequency common-mode voltage, which is the source of leakage current. In order to solve the problem, a new modulation strategy is presented for ESI to eliminate the high-frequency leakage current. This paper proposes a family of novel flying capacitor transformerless inverters for single-phase photovoltaic (PV) systems. Each of the new topologies proposed is based on a flying capacitor principle and requires only four power switches and/or diodes, one capacitor, and a small filter at the output stage. A simple unipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique is used to modulate the inverter to minimize the switching loss, output current ripple, and the filter requirements. In general, the main advantages of the new inverter topologies are: 1) the negative polarity of the PV is directly connected to the grid, and therefore, no leakage current; 2) reactive power compensation capability; and 3) the output ac voltage peak is equal to the input dc voltage (unlike neutral-point-clamped and derivative topologies, which requires twice the magnitude of the peak ac voltage). A complete description of the operating principle with modulation techniques, design guidelines, and comprehensive comparisons is presented to reveal the properties and limitations of each topology in detail. In this paper, two new topologies are proposed for multilevel inverters. The proposed topologies consist of a combination of the conventional series and the switched capacitor inverter units. The proposed topologies reduce the number of switches and isolated dc voltage sources, the variety of the dc voltage source values, and the size and cost of the system in comparison with the conventional topologies. In addition, the proposed topologies can double the input voltage without a transformer. There is no need for complicated methods to balance the capacitor voltage. This paper presents a comparison of two modulation methods for the seven-level switched-capacitor (SC) inverter using series/parallel conversion (SCISPC). The SCISPC is a multilevel inverter which has the less number of switching devices than the conventional multilevel inverters. The level-shifted pulsewidth modulation (PWM) (LS-PWM) was applied to the seven-level SCISPC in the previous research. In this paper, the level- and phase-shifted PWM (LPS-PWM) and the LS-PWM are applied to the seven-level SCISPC, and LPS-PWM is compared with LS-PWM for the seven-level SCISPC. The LPS-PWM has both the characteristics of the phase-shifted PWM (PS-PWM) and the LS-PWM. The voltage reduction during the discharging term of the SCs is reduced by means of the shorter discharging period compared to LS-PWM. The voltage ripple of the capacitors is also reduced, which leads to higher power conversion efficiency. In this paper, two topologies are presented for the enhanced-boost quasi-Z-source inverters (qZSI), namely continuous input current configuration and discontinuous input current configuration of enhanced-boost qZSI with two-switched impedance networks. Similar to enhanced-boost impedance-source inverters (ZSIs), these proposed inverter topologies possess very high boost voltage inversion at low shoot-through duty ratio and high modulation index to provide an improved quality output voltage. Compared to enhanced-boost ZSIs with two-switched Z-source impedance networks, these proposed inverter topologies share common ground with source and bridge inverter, overcome the starting inrush problem, and draw continuous input current and the lower voltage across the capacitors. In this paper, the near-state pulse width modulation (NSPWM), adapted to be used in dual-voltage source inverter (VSI) fed open-end load, is introduced primarily aiming to appreciably minimize the voltage total harmonic distortion (THD). Within the framework of the proposed method, the active time of pulses at the second inverter is relatively adjusted within switching interval (compared to the first VSI). The phase voltage harmonics are formulated for dual-inverter modulated by NSPWM; then, optimal adjustment is identified via a three-dimensional curve of phase voltage THD versus modulation index (MI) and phase angle displacement (PAD). Due to the limitation of MI in NSPWM, the desired output voltage is synthesized with modifying not only MI but also PAD between references of two VSIs. Furthermore, NSPWM inherently takes advantage of better efficiency compared to conventional space vector modulation due to switching only two phases within an interval (by clamping one phase to positive/negative dc-rail). The dual-VSI supplied by two isolated dc sources is assembled in the laboratory to experimentally evaluate the THD reduction feature of the proposed method; also, the simulation results obtained by means of a MATLAB/Simulink environment show close agreement with experimental data. This paper presents a new family of hybrid Z-source boost dc–dc converters intended for photovoltaic applications, where the high step-up dc–dc converters are demanded to boost the low-source voltages to a predefined grid voltage. Because the boost capabilities of the traditional Z-source networks are limited, the proposed converters are composed of combine traditional Z-source networks in different ways to enhance the boost abilities of the traditional Z-source networks. The new version of the proposed Z-source converters is termed as hybrid Z-source boost dc–dc converters to satisfy the traditional benefits of Z-source networks with stronger voltage boost abilities which can also be applied to dc–ac, ac–ac, and ac–dc power conversions. Cascaded converters are adopted in many power systems to manage sources and loads at different voltage levels simultaneously. DC bus capacitor is one of the key components in these converters due to its energy storage and fast response capabilities. However, the ripple current through the capacitor will influence its lifetime and the overall efficiency of the converter. Previous studies showed that the capacitor current of ac systems is optimized when the duty cycles are synchronized under in phase or antiphase condition. In this paper, the bus capacitor ripple current of cascaded two-stage converters for dc systems with different combinations of duty cycles is analyzed. It is found that the optimum capacitor current ripple varies depending on the values of individual duty cycles and the phase-shift angle between them. By properly adjusting the phase shift, the capacitor RMS current value can be reduced without affecting the converter normal operation or the need for extra sensing circuits, hence improving the energy conversion efficiency and prolonging the capacitor lifetime with relatively simple implementation. To illustrate, a case study of a two-stage dc/dc converter is carried out. A laboratory prototype converter confirmed a maximum efficiency improvement of 2.8% if the phase shift is adjusted properly when compared to the same converter with the worst case phase-shift angle. This paper introduces a combination of two proposed efficiency improvement techniques for a microinverter with current mode control zero-voltage switching output stages. The first technique is dynamic dead-time optimization wherein pulse width modulation dead times are dynamically adjusted as a function of load current. The second method is advanced phase skipping control which maximizes inverter efficiency by controlling power on individual phases depending on the available input power from the photovoltaic source. Neither of the techniques requires any additional circuit components and both can be easily implemented in digital controller firmware. The two techniques were designed and implemented in a 400-W three-phase microinverter prototype. The experimental results validate the theoretical analysis of these techniques and demonstrate that a significant efficiency improvement can be achieved by combining the two proposed control techniques. This paper presents a finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) for grid-tied packed U cells (PUC) multilevel inverter (MLI). The system under study consists of a single-phase 3-cells PUC inverter connected to the grid through filtering inductor. The proposed competitive topology allows the generation of 7-level output voltage with reduction of passive and active components compared to the conventional MLIs. The aim of the proposed FCS-MPC technique is to achieve, under various operating conditions, grid-tied current injection with unity power factor and low total harmonic distortion while balancing the capacitor voltage. This paper presents a harmonic elimination technique based on a three-level dodecagonal space vector structure for open-end winding induction motor (IM) drives with a single-dc supply. Advantages of dodecagonal space vector switching and multilevel inverters are achieved with a single-dc supply. A dc supply-fed three-level flying capacitor (FC) inverter feeds active power to one end of the IM winding terminals and H-bridge connected capacitors eliminate fifth- and seventh-order harmonics from the other end. A pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique is developed to switch the three-level dodecagonal space vectors and simultaneously control the H-bridge capacitors at 0.1445V\text{dc}. The fifth- and seventh-order harmonics are eliminated for the full modulation range of the three-level FC inverter, including the extreme 6-step operation. An increase in the linear modulation range has been achieved, resulting in improved dc bus utilization. Harmonic elimination is achieved by increasing switching frequency of the low-voltage capacitor connected H-bridge inverter; thus, switching frequency for the high-voltage dc supply-fed FC inverter is not increased. Using the proposed scheme, the instantaneous phase voltage never exceeds \frac23V\text{dc} (maximum phase voltage applied for hexagonal space vector structure) for which the machine windings are rated. This paper discusses the implementation of level-shifted and phase-shifted carrier-based modulation methods, in conjunction with a multiphase open-end winding drive topology. The considered drive is supplied using two five-phase two-level voltage source inverters (VSIs), with input provided from two isolated supplies of equal dc voltages. The topology is known to yield the same space-vector pattern as a corresponding three-level inverter in single-sided supply mode. It is shown in this paper that, with the application of a simple logic, the same phase voltage waveforms result as those obtainable with the appropriate carrier-based modulation scheme applied to the three-level VSI in single-sided supply mode. While the outcomes of the modulation techniques are the same, the open-end winding topology offers certain advantages, such as modularity and absence of capacitor voltage balancing requirements. A new pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is developed and presented in this paper. The proposed PWM scheme not only takes advantage of the special properties available in NPC inverters, but also reduces the switching loss of the inverter along with an inherent neutral point (NP) voltage control. Based on a circuit-level decoupling concept, the NPC inverter can be decoupled into two three-level Buck converters in every defined operating section, and thereby the controller design can be simplified. The salient features of the proposed scheme, as compared with the existing carrier-based DPWM strategies, are: 1) its reduced computational processing time, 2) its capability to balance the dc-link voltage without any additional control, and 3) its reduced complexity, e.g., only one carrier wave needed for pulse width modulating. Same as a space-vector modulation, the maximum modulation index, 1.1547, can be attainable by the proposed scheme. Moreover, compared to conventional continuous sinusoidal PWM, using this technique proposed here, the switching losses of the devices can be reduced by one third. In order to explain the operation of this topology properly, the decoupling principle including the driving signal synthesis and the NP potential variation are analyzed in detail in this paper. In this paper, an immune algorithm (IA) is developed for optimization of the harmonic performance of a three-phase inverter under the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation (SVPWM) control strategy. The presented algorithm employs the immune approach as the search method for finding the best optimal control vectors and action time of the three-phase inverter. As a result, the optimal control vectors and action time are calculated to minimize the objective function of the weighted total harmonic distortion of the output voltage waveforms. In addition, an experimental platform based on DSP and field-programmable gate array is built. This paper provides a detailed performance analysis of the method with comparison to the conventional SVPWM. This paper proposes a new space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SV-PWM) strategy for a three-level neutral point clamped inverter. The presented SV-PWM strategy makes it possible to control the neutral point voltage by optimum choice of switch sequence for any position and length of output voltage vector. The proposed solution takes into consideration the unbalance of the dc-link voltages. It also analyzes the influence of vector sequences on the predicted unbalance of the dc-link voltage. The solution allows selecting optimum vectors and their on-time durations in order to reduce quickly the dc-link voltage unbalance. The calculation of the space vector area proposed in this paper takes into consideration voltage unbalance and its influence on the length and position of vectors. The proposed approach assures properly generating the voltage output vectors, even in the case of the existing large voltage unbalance in the dc-link. Multilevel inverters (MLI) with reduced components are becoming popular to achieve higher voltage levels with lower cost and complexities of the circuit. Most of the reduced switch MLIs use a large number of isolated voltage sources that have a large total standing voltage (TSV) and higher losses. Moreover, many reduced component MLIs have been developed to reduce the number of switches only and have not utilized the dc-link voltages properly. Thus, an inverter needs to be designed in which the number of dc sources is also small and utilized fully. In this paper, a novel single-phase, multicell MLI configuration is presented that can generate a maximum number of output voltage levels using a minimum number of switches and dc sources. Two optimal configurations of the proposed MLI are proposed based on the minimum requirements of components with the optimum voltage stress of the highest rated switches. Moreover, the TSV of the proposed optimal MLI also becomes low. A generalized multicell optimum MLI is presented and the number of components, voltage stress of all the switches, and the TSV of the proposed as well as the other inverters also determined by the generalized expressions for comparison purpose. The prototype of a specimen 15-level inverter and the optimal 75-level inverter cell is further developed and implemented using DS 1103 in the laboratory to show the effectiveness of the proposed configuration. This paper presents a novel fault-tolerant method for active–neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter using a modified carrier-based pulsewidth modulation. At a fault event, the ANPC inverter is divided into subinverters, and the modulating signal is modified to two modulating signals. The modified modulating signals are used to control the subinverters and allow continuous operation of the three-level ANPC inverter during faulty conditions even up to four open-switch faults per phase. This technique provides the fault-tolerant capability of the ANPC inverter without the need to add any additional phase legs or complex control strategies. Furthermore, the proposed technique ensures the voltage balancing of the dc-link capacitors. The performance of the proposed fault-tolerant technique is verified through simulation studies in MATLAB/Simulink under different faulty conditions. A multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector generation scheme for variable-speed drive applications with single-dc-link operation requires a large value of capacitance for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) filters, when operated at lower speeds. In existing schemes, the multilevel dodecagonal structure is obtained by cascading a flying capacitor inverter with a CHB. In this paper, a new scheme has been proposed to minimize the capacitance requirement for full speed operation by creating vector redundancies using modular and equal voltage CHBs. Also, an algorithm has been developed to optimize the selection of vector redundancies among the CHBs in order to minimize the voltage ripple of the floating capacitors. The proposed algorithm considers instantaneous capacitor voltages and phase currents for optimal selection of vector redundancies. This paper deals with the analysis of the input dc-link voltage ripple in multilevel inverter based on H-bridge and level doubling network (LDN). The LDN is basically a half-bridge fed by a floating capacitor, with voltage self-balancing capability, recalling the concept of a flying capacitor configuration. The amplitude of the LDN voltage ripple is analytically determined considering both the low-order and the switching harmonic components. In particular, peak-to-peak distributions of voltage ripples over the fundamental period are analytically determined, making possible the design of dc-link capacitor relying only on the dc-voltage ripple requirements. The case study makes reference to negligible switching ripple in the output current. It well represents either grid connection or passive load having almost sinusoidal currents.
