Parallel interleaved two-level (2L) three-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) are widely used due to their distinct advantages of high power delivery, modularity, low current rating devices, etc. Along with these advantages, the parallel interleaved 2L VSIs could also be analyzed as a single three-level (3L) VSI. Conventionally parallel interleaved 2L VSIs are modulated using the 2L pulsewidth modulation (PWM) techniques. However, implementation of parallel interleaved 2L VSIs using the 2L PWM techniques may generate a higher ac side current ripple as compared to implementing the parallel interleaved 2L VSIs using 3L PWM techniques. This paper proposes a carrier-based method for implementing different 3L discontinuous PWM (DPWM) techniques for parallel interleaved 2L three-phase VSIs. Comparison of different 2L switching sequences for implementing a 3L DPWM switching sequence based on circulating current, line current ripple, and switching loss is also carried out. The integration of switched-capacitor techniques into multilevel inverters (MLIs) with a dc source string contributes to the boosting of voltage gain, renders it particularly attractive in reducing the number of input dc sources in the series string. However, the recent two-stage MLI topologies suffer from high voltage stress across the backend H-bridge. Addressing this concern, an improved topology, namely the one-switched-capacitor integrated MLI (1SCI-MLI) is proposed in this paper. An extended topology of 1SC-MLI is also established by appropriate incorporation of another switched-capacitor circuit. The two proposed topologies are endowed with voltage boosting capability. They also feature low switch count and low number of dc sources. More importantly, they resolve the high voltage stress problem in the existing counterparts. Their corresponding operational analysis and comparisons with recent MLI topologies are discussed. Recently multilevel inverters (MLIs) have received wide attention from industry and academia, as they are changing into a viable technology for diverse applications. To produce high-quality output using less switch count, development of novel reduced switch MLI (RS MLI) topologies has been a focus of current research theme. This paper presents design and control of a switched-diode dual source single switch MLI (SDDS MLI). The generalized SDDS MLI is first designed using an asymmetric basic unit. Proposed SDDS MLI requires less switch count and driver circuit count compared with the few recently developed RS MLI topologies. To improve the voltage quality by eliminating targeted low-order harmonics, a modified version of fish swarm optimization algorithm is examined for computing optimum switching angles required to control the SDDS MLI. Moreover, suitability and superiority of the derived algorithm are established by comparing with traditional selective harmonic elimination techniques. This paper proposes a new grid current controller for a photovoltaic (PV) module integrated buck inverter using a single pulsewidth modulation switch and an unfolding H-bridge, which significantly reduces switching losses. To achieve this, an internal grid current loop with active damping is presented with an LCL filter to connect it to the utility grid. The problem of the filter natural resonance is solved by means of a virtual impedance (active damping), demanding no additional sensor. A gate driving for power devices is a key technology to further improve switching characteristics. With the help of digital gate driver IC, the switching behavior of power devices can be enhanced even under high-speed switching. In this paper, an evaluation platform for determining the optimal switching pattern of an active gate drive control is proposed for an inverter circuit. A high speed optimization system is built up to search for an advantageous switching pattern that reduces total switching loss of two power devices in an inverter circuit and constrains surge voltage simultaneously. The proposed online optimization demonstrates its feasibility for the full-bridge inverter circuit, which is rated at 500 V with digital active gate drive control. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization system is able to obtain optimal switching pattern from $64^{60}$ possible combinations of switching patterns within 15 min, which is 6 times faster than the previous study. Optimizations can also conducted under different load current conditions. Eventually, the obtained optimal pattern yields up to 42% reduction in the total switching loss when it constrains surge voltage to minimum compared with the conventional driving pattern. Electrically excited synchronous machines have shown potential to be an alternative to permanent magnet synchronous machines in electromobility and wind power applications. High-frequency wireless power transferring technology enables a compact design of brushless exciters for the machine. In this paper, a dynamic model of high-frequency brushless exciters is proposed for the purposes of operating condition monitoring and excitation control. The modeling is done by using arithmetic and differential equations as well as considering different operation modes of the system. The operation modes are defined based on the physical behaviors of the excitation circuit. Experiments are performed to verify the model with variations of different circuit parameters. Furthermore, parameter sensitivity study, component parameter selection, and loss analysis are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. One of the recent trends in power electronics field is to achieve high efficiency and compact size by using wide bandgap power devices such as silicon carbide (SiC) or gallium nitride switches. This paper compares the efficiency, the motor terminal voltage quality (dv/dt), and the common mode current of the SiC-based variable frequency drives (VFDs) according to the inverter topologies with and without the output filters. For this purpose, both the 2-level (2L) and 3-level (3L) topologies with SiC devices are built and tested. Here, the well-known 2L half-bridge inverter is compared with the well-known 3L T-type neutral point clamped inverter. A dv/dt filter and a sine wave filter have been discussed to satisfy the National Electrical Manufacturers Association standards as well. The experiments have been carried out with a 380-V/60-Hz, 3.7-kW induction motor and the custom designed power stages. An improved bridgeless (BL) Cuk converter-based electric vehicle (EV) battery charger with high power factor and increased efficiency is designed and developed in this paper. It provides low cost and high-power-density-based charging solution for the EV. This charger incorporates less number of devices operating over one switching cycle, which reduces the additional conduction loss incurred by a diode bridge rectifier of the conventional charger. Hence, it improves the charger's efficiency. The added advantage of the proposed topology is that the unwanted capacitive coupling loop is removed, as well as the unwanted conduction through the body diode of the inactive switch in the previously developed BL Cuk converter is avoided. This significantly improves the charger's efficiency. For the constant current and constant voltage charging, the commands are synchronized by a flyback converter. The proposed charger draws a sinusoidal current from ac mains and the total harmonic distortion in the supply current is reduced to the limits specified by the IEC 61000-3-2 guidelines. Floating interleaved boost converter (FIBC) is a promising topology of the dc/dc converters to interface the fuel cell with dc bus in a hybrid powertrain. For the efficient control development of power converters, the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation plays an important role. The accuracy of the real-time model determines the credibility of the HIL simulation. In order to take the power losses and thermal stress into account in the control development, the device-level real-time model is becoming popular in recent years, which can effectively produce device transient voltage and current waveforms, switching power dissipations, and thermal behaviors. In this paper, a device-level electro-thermal model of FIBC is proposed and developed using the field programmable gate array based real-time simulation technology. The FIBC network model can effectively be simulated with a 500-ns time step while producing the insulated-gate bipolar transistor transient switching waveforms authentically with a 5-ns resolution. The switching power losses can thus be estimated in real time and then used for the computation of the IGBT thermal behavior. Therefore, the device junction temperature can be evaluated in the real-time simulation. The accuracy of the proposed FIBC device-level model is validated by the reference model in the Saber offline simulation tool. This paper proposes a novel open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (OW-BDFRG) with dual two-level converters in order to reduce the converter rating and switching frequency for large-scale wind turbine applications. The new converter topology is equivalent to a three-level converter directly connected to the control winding of typical BDFRG. The OW-BDFRG system with this topology structure requires lower converter rating and switching frequency, and has a more flexible control mode, better operation performance, and fault redundancy capability. For the OW-BDFRG, this paper also proposes a new control scheme combining direct power control (DPC) with sliding mode variable structure (SMVS) control to implement the power tracking. The voltage-vector switching table of DPC is redesigned according to the error signals of active and reactive powers of the power winding, as well as the sector location of control winding flux. The active and reactive powers of the OW-BDFRG can be directly decoupled and independently controlled by properly selecting the switching voltage vectors. The novelty of this paper lies in an OW-BDFRG topology driven by dual two-level converters to improve the system characteristics, and the use of SMVS control to improve the DPC accuracy and robustness to parameter variations. The hybrid modular multilevel converter with cascaded full bridges (HMMC-CFB) is a recently proposed dc fault tolerant converter topology for high-power applications. It has a director part (DP) consisting of a series of connected half-bridge submodules, and a wave-shaping part (WSP) composed of a series of connected full-bridge submodules (FBSMs). The submodules in DP avoid high voltage stresses and improve synchronization between DP and WSP by slowing down the change rate of DP output voltage. This slowdown is achieved by using a trapezoidal reference signal for DP. The WSP attenuates the voltage harmonics produced by DP. However, the energy exchanged by WSP changes with modulation index, which may cause improper voltage regulation of the submodule capacitors. This paper proposes a new control technique to regulate the energy exchanged by WSP, which uses a variable slope trapezoidal reference signal of DP. To obtain this slope, the feedforward and feedback controllers are used. The feedforward controller gives the value of slope depending on the modulation index (mv) to keep the energy exchanged by WSP nearly equal to zero, whereas the losses and nonideality of the converter are taken care of by the feedback controller. This technique guarantees proper voltage regulation of the submodule capacitors for all modulation indices. The efficacy of the proposed technique is confirmed using simulations and experimentations. This paper also presents a circulating current suppressing controller for HMMC-CFB. In this paper, the zero sequence circulating current in open winding permanent magnet synchronous machine (OW-PMSM) drives with common dc bus is systematically analyzed for the first time. It is revealed that the zero sequence circulating current is affected by zero sequence back-electromotive force, cross coupling voltages in zero sequence from the machine side, pulse-width modulation induced zero sequence voltage, and inverter nonlinearity from the inverter side. Particularly, the influences from the cross coupling voltages in zero sequence and parasitic effect of inverter nonlinearity are investigated for the first time in this paper. Then, the synthetic model of the equivalent zero sequence circuit is proposed as well. Each cause is studied independently via analytical modeling, finite element analysis, and experiments. Meanwhile, to tackle this issue, the relevant suppression strategy using frequency adaptive proportional resonant controller is presented and tested on the 3 kW OW-PMSM platform. Usually, the high-gain high-efficiency dc–dc converters consist of many passive components, which increases the order of the system. As the order increases, system modeling and control become more complex. Thus, there is a need for the simplification of the small signal modeling process of such converters. This paper presents a generalized small signal model and equivalent circuit for an $n$ th-order coupled-inductor-based high-voltage gain converters (CIHVGC) that can be conveniently used for the control design. The state variable representation of a generalized coupled inductor with p windings is included. A simplified step by step procedure to obtain small signal model using visual inspection is presented. Analysis is included and verified using simulations and experiments for the output voltage regulation of high-voltage gain converters. The usefulness and versatility of the proposed model is verified with three examples of high gain converters belonging to the CIHVGC family. Three-phase voltage-source inverters typically feature a significant amount of dc energy storage to maintain a stiff dc bus. In these cases, the dc-link capacitor is sized to store enough energy to maintain several tens of cycles of ac output at the rated power. In this paper, we propose to reduce the size of the dc-link capacitor dramatically to store enough energy to provide just one high-frequency switching cycle of the ac output power. The dc bus is no longer stiff, and hence, classical sinusoidal pulse-width modulation cannot be used. However, the stored energy modulation (SEM) proposed herein synthesizes high-quality sinusoidal output voltage waveforms, even with such tiny dc-link capacitors. In SEM, the switching intervals of the interconnecting switches are carefully determined nonlinear functions of various operating parameters such as reactive component sizing, switching frequency, load levels, etc. This paper presents the analytical and detailed design development of the SEM approach along with circuit simulation, experimental results, and comparative evaluation of a dc-to-three-phase system example. This paper proposes a multilevel series compensator (MSC) to deal with voltage sags/swells, harmonic compensation, or reactive power compensation. Such a device can be considered as a dynamic voltage restorer or a series active power filter (Series-APF). The MSC can improve the power quality of loads located in stiff systems. The configuration is based on three-phase bridge (TPB) converters connected by means of cascaded single-phase transformers. This arrangement permits the use of a single dc-link. A generalization for $K$ -stages in which $K$ -transformers are coupled with $K$-TPB converters is presented. The topology permits generating a high number of levels in the voltage waveforms with a low number of power switches in comparison with a classic topology. The multilevel waveforms are generated by the converters through a suitable pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy that takes into consideration the transformer turns ratios. Modularity and simple maintenance make the proposed MSC an attractive solution compared with some conventional configurations. Model, PWM strategy, and overall control are discussed in this paper. One of the main challenges of the solid-state transformer (SST) lies in the implementation of the dc–dc stage. In this paper, a quadruple-active-bridge (QAB) dc–dc converter is investigated to be used as a basic module of a modular three-stage SST. Besides the feature of high power density and soft-switching operation (also found in others converters), the QAB converter provides a solution with reduced number of high-frequency transformers, since more bridges are connected to the same multiwinding transformer. To ensure soft switching for the entire operation range of the QAB converter, the triangular current-mode modulation strategy, previously adopted for the dual-active-bridge converter, is extended to the QAB converter. The theoretical analysis is developed considering balanced (equal power processed by the medium-voltage (MV) cells) and unbalanced (unequal power processed by the MV cells) conditions. Variability in the solar irradiance level and ambient temperature of photovoltaic (PV) systems necessitates the use of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of PV systems to ensure continuous harvesting of maximum power. This paper presents a sensorless current (SC) MPPT algorithm using model predictive control (MPC). The main contribution of this paper is the use of model-based predictive control principle to eliminate the current sensor that is usually required for well-known MPPT techniques such as perturb and observe (P&O). By predicting the PV system states in horizon of time, the proposed method becomes an elegant, embedded controller that allows faster response and lower power ripple in steady state than the conventional P&O technique under rapidly changing atmospheric conditions. This becomes possible without requiring expensive sensing and communications equipment and networks for direct measurement of solar irradiation changes. The performance of the proposed SC-MPC-MPPT with reduced load sensitivity is evaluated on the basis of industrial European Efficiency Test, EN 50530, that assesses the performance of PV systems under dynamic environmental conditions. This paper proposes a novel single-switch dc/dc converter for the future renewable electric energy delivery and management system to implement the distributed renewable energy resources (DRER). The DRER is responsible for the maximum power point tracking of the photovoltaic panel (PV) module and also for the control of central energy storage device. Due to the characteristics of the PV module and the dc-bus, the single power stage must provide low current ripple in the input and output terminals, must operate with output current and voltage regulation, and present a high-voltage conversion ratio. To achieve such features, this paper proposes a novel integrated Boost–Zeta converter. To avoid a complex modeling and control, we propose a disaggregation concept for this. The control of an ultracapacitor (UC)-based dc–dc power supply is crucial to provide reliable energy backup to critical loads in the case of momentary power main failures. In this regard, smooth and seamless transition between charging and discharging controls of UC stack is of paramount importance. For ride-through applications where charging and discharging times are critical, provision of different control structures for charging and discharging subsystems is crucial. The conventional control techniques, though ensure seamless mode transition, does not allow different control structures for both the subsystems. This paper proposes an independent switch control strategy, which ensures seamless transition between charging and discharging control modes. The proposed control is based on pulse-width modulation blocking and is shown to ensure the fastest mode transition between control modes. The proposed control also elucidates an accurate method for identification of control modes, which is important to independent switch control. The advantages of the proposed control compared with conventional controls is presented in this paper. Compared with the conventional hard switching battery equalizers, hierarchical battery equalizer based on the bipolar continuous-conduction mode buck–boost units could effectively reduce the switching loss and improve the conversion efficiency. This paper mainly addresses the key technical challenges associated with the optimal design of this battery equalizer. The inductor current is controlled to enter into the negative region. Thus, the mosfet body diode provides a freewheeling path for the inductor current during the dead band. This ensures zero-voltage switching turn-on of both power mosfets in each buck–boost unit without auxiliary snubbers. Therefore, the switching losses are significantly reduced. Meanwhile, the integral of the inductor negative current is precisely controlled to minimize the circulating current. This guarantees both minimized conduction losses and suitable equalization speed. Furthermore, an equalization algorithm, which compensates the battery internal resistance induced state-of-charge error, is proposed to improve the equalization accuracy. The operating principles and design considerations are analyzed in detail. An experimental prototype to balance four series-connected lithium-ion battery cells is implemented. This paper presents an isolated auxiliary power supply for medium-voltage power electronics systems. The proposed converter comprises two stages: a non-isolated ac/dc stage that connects directly to the medium-voltage line, and an isolated dc/dc stage that provides 100-W output power at 24 V, with 10 kV isolation. The proposed modular ac/dc stage uses just one active semiconductor device per module, features an internal capacitor voltage balancing, and achieves power factor correction by employing predictive current control. High switching frequency operation of both converter stages enable a reduction in system size and weight when compared to traditional low-frequency transformer-based approach. Paralleled inverters have the merits of high power rating, improved reliability, and convenient maintenance. However, zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) will occur and lead to current distortion and system loss. The ZSCC control is more complicated when three-level topology is utilized and paralleled number is increased. Therefore, this paper proposes a simplified ZSCC suppression scheme for multi-paralleled three-level T-type inverters (3LT2Is). A novel equivalent model is developed and the ZSCC controller based on the new model is easier to implement. Thus, the number of paralleled inverters can be increased without complicating the control scheme and the inverters could be switched on or off optionally. Besides, Feed-Forward (FF) strategy is adopted to eliminate the ZSCC spikes caused by symmetrical three-level space vector modulation. This paper introduces a three-phase grid-connected inverter for commercial-scale photovoltaic systems. The circuit topology combines an ac-inductor-less active bridge with a parallel-connected pulsewidth modulation inverter acting as an instantaneous reactive power compensator. The active bridge, called a 120° conduction inverter, operates at a switching frequency equal to the grid frequency and outputs a 120° rectangular current, while the compensator eliminates the harmonic currents included in the rectangular current. The main advantage of this strategy is the reduction in size of the required ac inductor by a factor of 4, as well as the reduction of power losses in the switching devices. The theoretical analysis clearly shows that the compensator can synthesize a sinusoidal output current by controlling only instantaneous reactive power, thus eliminating the need for electrolytic capacitors. A 5-kW experimental setup validates the operating principle and the control method of the proposed inverter and exhibits an inverter efficiency as high as 99.2% with Si superjunction mosfets. This paper deals with the control and implementation of solar photovoltaic (PV) array-based multi-objective bi-directional charger beneficial for electric vehicle (EV), household load, and utility. For EV, the charger provides the charging facility. For household load, the charger acts as a standalone inverter, and for utility the charger acts as an active power filter. However, for providing the multi-functionality and the multi-mode operation capability of the charger, a reconfigurable control strategy is proposed. Moreover, an adaptive dc-link voltage strategy is proposed for achieving the optimum voltage at dc link under all voltage conditions for achieving minimum ripple in grid currents. The charger also uses a voltage synchronization strategy for achieving the seamless mode transition between the grid-connected and standalone modes. In grid-connected mode, the charger uses a double second-order generalized integrator-based positive sequence estimator along with the improved linear sinusoidal tracer-based algorithm for generating the balanced and sinusoidal reference grid currents, under the unbalanced and distorted grid voltages. In this paper, the intermittent control is proposed for switched reluctance machine (SRM) drive to both increase the efficiency and decrease the cost of the traction system for low-cost electric vehicles. With the purpose of maintaining the average machine torque required by the load, the intermittent control imposes a higher phase torque during a shorter time. The simulation and experimental results achieved with three different SRMs show that the intermittent control increases the system efficiency by reducing the converter losses and the core losses. Additionally, three different strategies of the control have been proposed to analyze their impact automotive application based on the criteria of efficiency, machine vibration, and torque pulsation. Three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters are being widely adopted in low-voltage low-power applications. For an intended application, the modulation strategy and the operating conditions are the two key factors that highly influence the major performance indices of the NPC inverter, such as efficiency, harmonic distortion, and voltage oscillations at neutral point (NP). Considering dynamic loading applications where the operating point varies significantly, this paper proposes an improved adjustable pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy for a three-level NPC inverter that can alter its modulation pattern to meet desired performance objectives for the full operation range. It has been shown that by varying two control parameters namely discontinuity control parameter and bias control parameter, the proposed modulation strategy changes its pattern between the most efficient generalized discontinuous PWM to NP oscillations-free partial dipolar PWM strategy. Additionally, to obtain a tradeoff between the performance parameters—efficiency, NP oscillations, and waveform quality—The proposed strategy has the ability to settle at the intermediate modulation patterns by transforming into a hybrid modulation signal. Furthermore, considering NP voltage unbalance mitigation as major technical challenge in adjustable modulation strategy, a voltage unbalance compensator that exhibits satisfactory balancing performance for the entire variations of modulation patterns and operating conditions has also been presented. The performance of the proposed modulation strategy in conjunction with voltage unbalance compensator has been evaluated in simulation by widely varying the speed and load of induction motor, and verified in experimentation. This paper presents design of an isolated high-step-down dc–dc converter based on a class-DE power stage, operating at a 10-MHz switching frequency using enhancement-mode gallium nitride transistors. The converter operating principles are discussed, and the power stage design rated for 20 W is presented for a step down from 200–300 V input to 0–28 V output. Commercially available magnetic materials were explored and the high-frequency resonant inductor and transformer designs using a low-loss Fair-Rite type 67 material are presented. Finite-element simulations have been performed to estimate the parameters of magnetics at 10-MHz. Experimental results are presented at 12 W, 254 V input to 22 V output and 5 W, 254 V input to 14 V output on a laboratory prototype operating at 10-MHz. This paper evaluates the temperature-dependent static and switching characteristics of SiC Trench mosfets in a low-inductance multiple-chip power module. First, a phase-leg power module package design with integrated decoupling capacitance is proposed and fabricated based on the P-cell/N-cell concept, and the module design including the substrate layout and packaging material selection are discussed. With the fabricated power module, the temperature-dependent static and switching characteristics of the SiC Trench mosfets are comprehensively investigated, and the key performance differences from the traditional SiC planar mosfets are discussed. Specifically, compared to the SiC mosfets with planar structure, the SiC Trench mosfets are observed to have a different temperature coefficient in term of the turn-off switching loss. This paper presents the development, analysis, and performance evaluation of a new topology for an isolated dc power electronic converter (PEC). The proposed topology (called the reverse flyback dc PEC) is developed to process a discontinuous input voltage and produce a continuous output voltage. The reverse flyback dc PEC is operated based on charging the inductive element in the high-frequency transformer, while discharging the energy to the output side through on–off actions of the switching element, which is located on the secondary side of the high-frequency transformer. A prototype for the proposed reverse flyback dc PEC is constructed to evaluate its performance under different operating conditions. Performance results show that the reverse flyback dc PEC is capable of processing discontinuous input voltages with different duty ratios and maintaining continuous output voltages with a minor sensitivity to the load type of ratings. This paper proposes a high-frequency isolated dc/dc converter, whose switching frequency is 20 MHz. Meanwhile, the switch voltage stress is reduced based on optimal switch impedance. In the proposed converter, the switch can operate in ZVS condition, which can help to reduce the switching loss. A mathematical model of the proposed high frequency converter is built, which provides an effective design method for the system parameters. This paper presents a novel model predictive torque control with discrete duty ratio optimization for a six-phase PMSM machine with high robustness against weighting factor variation. First, a two-step lookup table is developed to initially select the optimal voltage vector, which is to regulate the torque and flux in the energy conversion related subspace, as well as suppress the harmonic currents in the x–y subspace. Then, a null vector is inserted along with the selected optimal voltage vector to adjust the duty ratio with a set of value to avoid the complicated derivation. Subsequently, the optimal duty ratio is determined by a cost function to minimize the torque and flux error. So by using the proposed method, the torque ripple is reduced and even applying an improper weighting factor will not deteriorate the machine performance severely. This paper proposes a switching strategy for the Z-source inverter (ZSI), which has unequal short-through intervals to reduce the current ripple in the inductor of its impedance source. A size reduction of the inductor of the ZSI is one of the important issues in improving the power density of the ZSI, and the inductor current ripple reduction is required to achieve it. The proposed method can reduce the inductor current ripple by 27.8% compared with the conventional method that has equal short-through intervals without increasing the number of inverter switching. The proposed operation and ripple reduction were confirmed in experiments with a 3-kW-class laboratory prototype. Three-phase voltage source pulsewidth modulation (PWM) rectifiers can achieve constant dc voltage and sinusoidal grid currents under ideal grid voltages. However, under unbalanced grid voltage conditions, there are ripples at twice the grid frequency in the dc voltage, and the grid currents become highly distorted. To address the aforementioned problems, control methods developed under ideal grid voltage conditions should be modified. Various techniques have been proposed in the literature to calculate the new current reference or power reference. However, most methods use conventional pq theory and only consider the grid-side power control. Hence, the dc voltage ripples are not completely eliminated. Furthermore, the derived mathematical expressions for reference calculations are usually very complicated. In contrast to current methods, this paper proposes a very simple yet effective direct power control (DPC) method based on extended pq theory. By analyzing the instantaneous extended power of the line inductance, a simple and concise power compensation is analytically derived and added to the original power references. As a result, the dc voltage ripples are significantly reduced, and the grid currents remain sinusoidal even under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The utilization of wide band gap devices has enabled high frequency operation of totem pole bridgeless PFC rectifier. However, most of the designs reported in the literature with frequency higher than 100 kHz operate under discontinuous conduction mode or critical mode to reduce the switching loss. This paper proposes a zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) technique for totem-pole PFC rectifier under continuous conduction mode operation which enables efficient operation at switching frequencies well above 100 kHz. A simple auxiliary circuit consisting of a small auxiliary inductor and two active switches is placed in parallel with the main input filter inductor to achieve zero-voltage-switching of the main switches. The auxiliary switches operate with zero-current-switching (ZCS) and conduct current as short resonant pulses only during the critical turn-on transition which results in very low losses in the auxiliary circuit. The timing of the auxiliary switches is adaptively controlled with respect to the grid voltage angle for optimized overall efficiency. The effectiveness of the proposed ZVT scheme has been validated through experiments based on a 2.4 kW 400 kHz hardware prototype with 98.35% peak efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a highly reliable back-to-back (BTB) power converter is proposed for doubly fed induction generator-based wind turbines (DFIG-WTs). When a power switch open-circuit fault is encountered in either the grid-side converter (GSC) or the rotor-side converter (RSC), a four-switch three-phase (FSTP) topology is formed to avoid using redundant bridge arms, which reduces the power circuit complexity and minimizes the conduction and switching losses. A simplified space vector pulsewidth modulation technique is used to eliminate sector identification and complex trigonometric calculations. In addition, the influence of dc-bus capacitor voltage unbalance on the electromagnetic torque is analyzed in detail. The offset current components are calculated, and they are deducted from the reference values in the modified control strategies to suppress the dc-bus voltage deviation. Moreover, the power loss model of a BTB converter is analyzed in detail, and the efficiency study is performed in various post-fault situations. Simulations in MATLAB/Simulink are carried out to verify the performance of a DFIG-WT based on a FSTP BTB converter. Furthermore, the control hardware-in-the-loop setup with RSC and GSC separately simulated in a digital real-time simulator is applied for experimental verification of the proposed control strategy. In this paper, a new zero-sequence current suppression control strategy for the five-phase open-winding fault-tolerant fractional-slot concentrated-winding interior-permanent-magnet (FTFSCW-IPM) motor drive system with a common dc bus is proposed. By unequal distribution of the zero voltage vector, the proposed method can well suppress the zero-sequence current caused by the dead-time effect that the conventional eliminating method cannot be achieved. First, the dead-time effect to the zero-sequence current is discussed. Then the zero-axis controller is designed to obtain the reference common-mode voltage. Last, according to the principle of the unequal zero voltage vector distribution, the switching sequence of the two inverters can be calculated, and the maximum modulation index is also first deduced in detail. Three three-phase unidirectional open-end topologies with reduced active switch count are investigated in this paper. These configurations arise from the replacement of controlled switches by diodes, in order to reduce the system complexity. Furthermore, the costs are also reduced once less driver circuitry is needed. The proposed topologies make the ac–dc conversion of the power delivered by a permanent magnet synchronous machine operating at unity power factor. Each configuration is made out of two converters in which at least one is derived from the substitution of active switches in two-level legs or three-level neutral-point clamped legs. The proposed configurations have less switches, making it possible to obtain the same number of voltage levels (in relation with the conventional configurations) with half or quarter of the number of active switches. Also, the topologies are compared in terms of semiconductor power losses and harmonic distortion. Low-voltage dc distribution systems have gained significant attention over the last years, since they provide simpler and more efficient integration of distributed generators and storage devices, establishing a pathway to net zero energy buildings. In low-power units, transformerless utility interface is preferred to reduce footprint and losses. However, the lack of galvanic isolation introduces a common-mode (CM) path between the dc distribution bus and the utility service grounding, leading to the presence of high CM voltages at the dc bus feeders. The attenuation of the CM voltage reduces the touch voltage amplitude and leakage current, contributing to a safer environment. In this paper, a feed-forward active compensation of the CM voltage is proposed. It relies on utility voltage parameters, estimated by a phase locked loop, to generate a counter CM voltage; hence, it does not require previous knowledge of the system CM path model or the addition of voltage sensors. This paper extends the application of a frame-angle-based (FAB) direct torque controller (DTC) for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives to low and very low speeds. The FAB-DTC is intended for PMSM drives that are fed by $3\phi$ six-pulse wavelet-modulated dc–ac converters. The foundations of the FAB-DTC are based on regulating the $d\text{--}q$ -axis stator voltages, in response to variations in the load torque and/or drive speed. The adjustments in $d\text{--}q$ -axis stator voltages are created by changing the angle $\vartheta$ of the frame spanned by the $d\text{--}q$ -axis stator voltages. In order to extend the FAB-DTC to low and very low speeds, the changes in $\vartheta$ are accompanied by changes in the maximum scale. The values of maximum scale and $d\text{--}q$ -axis stator voltages are used to update or change the reference signals employed by the wavelet modulation to generate switching pulses to operate a $3\phi$ dc–ac converter. The complete PMSM drive system incorporating the modified FAB-DTC is implemented for a 10-hp PMSM drive system. The performance of the FAB-DTC is investigated for different changes in the command torque for various low and very low speeds. A switching-capacitor-based buck–boost converter (with common ground) for point of load applications is proposed in this paper. It is capable of operating in stand-alone buck or boost mode in addition to its primary operation of performing the buck–boost conversion. The striking feature of the proposed converter is low source current ripple content irrespective of its mode of operation (buck–boost, buck, or boost). First, feasible pulsewidth modulation schemes for the proposed converter are identified and thereafter the corresponding circuit performance analysis, steady-state analysis, and state-space modelling is established. Through steady-state analysis, voltage gain expressions are formulated and equations defining L-C components are derived in terms of their ripple quantities. The state-space models are used to formulate small-signal analysis and to obtain the relevant transfer functions required in the controller design. A voltage-mode/current-mode controller is designed, with a tradeoff in bandwidth, to control the proposed converter and transit it from buck to boost mode or vice versa seamlessly. A 30–55 W, 100 kHz, prototype point of load converter with 36-V input dc source is built to supply power at constant load voltage of either 48 or 28 V. The proposed converters’ effectiveness is demonstrated experimentally in terms of reduced source current ripple along with seamless transition from buck to boost mode and vice versa. In this paper, three generalized configurations of three-phase pulsewidth modulated (PWM) rectifiers are presented. They are composed of cascaded cells, each formed by a three-phase bridge of switching devices and a three-phase transformer to cascade the cells and isolate the load from the power source. One configuration is bidirectional, whereas the other two are unidirectional alternatives that replace power switches for diodes in some legs. The turns ratios of transformers from each cell are designed in order to provide the required gain and number of levels in the inverted multilevel voltage, enhancing power quality while attending requirements for proper operation in each case. Configurations with two and three cells are compared by means of simulations between themselves and with three conventional three-phase PWM rectifiers: the two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor bridge and the multilevel neutral point clamped (NPC) bridge and NPC H-bridge. Many degrees of asymmetry between the transformers in each cell, determined by the turns ratios, are considered to evaluate their impact on the topologies with relation to performance and cost. It is shown that proposed multilevel rectifiers present lower harmonic distortion, semiconductor losses, and switching stress, and some options with intermediate asymmetry are considered as good alternatives to the most asymmetrical cases. Experimental results are also provided for configurations with two cells, to demonstrate their lower harmonic distortion and power losses compared to the conventional isolated two-level PWM rectifier. This paper proposes an improved second-order generalized integrator with frequency-locked loop (ISOGI-FLL) based control scheme for a grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) array fed voltage source converter (VSC) to mitigate the power quality problems. The steepest descent algorithm based maximum power point tracking is used to achieve the crest power from a solar PV array to improve solar power generation (SPG) into the grid as well as to maintain dc bus voltage of the VSC. The ISOGI-FLL-based control scheme is very effective for grid currents balancing and harmonics mitigation, at a variation of SPG and unity power factor operation. Simulated results are demonstrated using MATLAB/Simulink for load unbalancing and variation in solar insolation. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated based on comparative performance with conventional algorithms. Test results of a developed prototype show satisfactory performance for different operating conditions like grid currents balancing, photovoltaic-distribution static compensator (PV-DSTATCOM) mode, and DSTATCOM-PV mode at variable solar insolation. The switched shunting resistor circuit is a classical and practical passive equalization scheme that nevertheless suffers from the voltage imbalance after the charging process. It results from the discrepancy of the shunting resistor and the physical characteristics of supercapacitor (SC) cells. In this paper, the distributed voltage equalization control strategies with the proportional-integral (PI) observer for the switched shunting resistor circuit are analyzed and compared. First, the charging and equalizing system is modeled as the switched system and the system observability is proved. The decentralized control and consensus control are analyzed and their shortages are presented. Then, the leader–follower cooperative control is proposed to improve the charging time while keeping the equalization performance. Meanwhile, the PI observer is designed to estimate the internal capacitance voltage of an SC precisely to avoid the effect of equal series resistance. The control convergence is proved by using the Lyapunov stability and switched system theory. This paper presents a new islanding detection method for synchronous distributed generation (DG). The proposed method is developed based on the combination of rate of change of exciter voltage (RCEV) and open–close circuit breaker (OCCB) at a DG connection point. Whenever the RCEV parameter is not sufficient enough to detect an islanding condition efficiently and correctly, the OCCB strategy will be triggered. The proposed OCCB strategy sends a switching command to one phase of the three-phase circuit breaker (CB), which connects the DG to the grid. In this way, the CB will be immediately opened and then closed. This switching condition will cause a variation in the value of RCEV. This variation is small for the conditions when DG operates in parallel with the main grid, whereas it will be large during the occurrence of islanding. The implementation of the proposed strategy is cost-effective because it only uses the CB at the DG output and does not require any extra equipment. The proposed approach is tested on two different systems including a hypothetical power system and the IEEE 33-bus test system in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulation results show that the proposed method eliminates the nondetection zone and also reveals high accuracy compared with previously introduced methods. A large grid-connected private industrial and residential 11 kV network in northern Australia has its own 11 kV diesel generators to supply essential loads during grid supply outages. The generators each have a neutral earthing resistor (NER). When islanded from the grid, one NER provides the system reference. Significant circulating current was causing overheating of the NER. A discontinuous pulsewidth modulation (DPWM) strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) traction inverter drive for electric vehicles (EVs) with minimum switching loss for the full power factor (PF) range is developed and presented in this paper. Considering the dynamic loading conditions in an EV propelled by an induction motor (IM), the discontinuous modulation strategy is generalized to obtain minimum switching loss for a wide variations in load PF and modulation depth. The dynamic operating conditions in EV may render frequent unbalances in dc-link capacitor voltages in NPC inverter. It is demonstrated that the addition of an appropriate offset signal with the reference discontinuous signals generates compensating neutral current in the right direction, which can be used to mitigate existing unbalance in two dc-link capacitor voltages. Minimum switching loss at variable PF is attained by positioning the nonswitching clamped regions of the reference auxiliary signals according to the load PF. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for a wide range of torque/speed variations is studied through simulation by developing a MATLAB/SIMULINK model of an IM traction inverter drive with field-oriented control strategy for closed loop control. In this paper, in response to the open-circuit fault scenario in the grid-side converter (GSC) of doubly fed induction generator-based wind turbines (DFIG-WTs), a fault-tolerant four-switch three-phase (FSTP) topology-based GSC is studied. Compared with other switch-level fault-tolerant converter topologies, fewer switches, less switching and conduction losses, and simpler converter structure are derived. A simplified space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique is proposed to improve the output current quality and reduce the computational complexity in the control process. Unified expressions of duty ratios for the two remaining healthy bridge arms are obtained. In addition, the three-phase unbalance phenomenon caused by the capacitive impedance in the faulty phase is analyzed from the ac point of view, and a current distortion compensation scheme is illustrated. Furthermore, a dc-bus voltage deviation suppression strategy is proposed to maximize the dc-bus voltage utilization rate and mitigate the damage to the dc-link capacitors. Simulations are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink2017a to demonstrate the validity of the proposed SVPWM technique and compensation schemes in FSTP GSC for a 1.5-MW grid-connected DFIG-WT when different working conditions are considered. In this paper, a multipulse ac–dc converter fed multilevel inverter (MLI)-based indirect vector controlled induction motor drive (IVCIMD) is proposed for medium-power application. A 54-pulse ac–dc converter is utilized at the supply side to suppress the input current total harmonic distortion, as per the IEEE-519 standard. Mainly three separate isolated transformers are utilized and each transformer is configured as an 18-pulse ac–dc converter. Due to the phase shift in primary windings, these three transformers are reconfigured as a 54-pulse ac–dc converter. A 15-level binary-based cascaded MLI is utilized at the motor side to enhance the required performance of IVCIMD. A 15-level inverter is switched at fundamental frequency, which ensures the very low switching losses in the proposed IVCIMD. A modified nearest level modulation strategy is proposed to achieve fundamental switching frequency. The performance of the proposed IVCIMD is simulated at various operating conditions by utilizing Simulink/MATLAB platform. This paper presents a methodology of the battery modeling based on experimental tests results. As a main contribution, authors conducted an analysis of the main constraints and effects of each parameter of the batteries model on its behavior and lifetime. This can help to improve the accuracy of the model. Due to its capability to model the recovery effect and the rate-capacity one, the kinetic battery model serves as the basis of the study. Results of experimental tests are used to realize the analysis and to define the suitable methodology of batteries parameters identification.
