This paper presents a dual active bridge (DAB) converter with reactive power control capability (Q-capability) for a battery energy storage system (BESS) or an electric vehicle (EV) to deliver vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services. The DAB topology is preferable for EV charging systems due to its galvanic isolation and bidirectional power flow capabilities. However, this topology increases reactive current peak and loses zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation at light loads if it is not controlled with improved modulation strategies and proper Q control. This paper proposes a mixed modulation method and a reactive power optimization (RPO) algorithm based on power system load flow concepts. Due to the complexities associated with the analytical solution using time domain analysis, this paper develops detailed universal expressions of a DAB converter using the harmonic analysis method. Analytical identification of ZVS boundaries and DSP implementation of the RPO algorithm become easier with these universal expressions. Multiple modes analysis for different operational states is no longer required. Simulation results have been shown for different modulation strategies of the DAB converters. The theoretical analysis of modulation strategies, RPO algorithm and ZVS operation are validated by experimental results on a DAB prototype. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are playing a pivotal role in the power sector with potential applications, such as interfacing renewable energy sources with the grid and several industrial drive applications. MLIs with a smaller number of switching devices are more promising due to their compact size, reduced cost, and higher efficiency compared with their traditional counterparts. This paper, therefore, presents a new three-phase seven-level inverter. This topology is a combination of two cascade-connected two-level voltage-source inverters (VSIs) and H-bridge cells with flying capacitors (FCs). This paper presents the operating principle and the balancing technique for the dc-link capacitors and FCs. The generation of various output voltage levels and the limitation of the sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation control for FC voltage balancing is also presented. The number of components in the proposed circuit configuration and their voltage ratings are considerably lower compared with the recently proposed topologies. The behavior of the proposed circuit configuration is first assessed with simulation studies and is then tested with a laboratory prototype. In a common dc-link dual-fed open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) topology, it is well known how the additional flow of a zero-sequence current (ZSC) is permitted. The low zero-sequence impedance characteristic of high-speed machines leads to high-intensity and high-frequency ripple of the ZSC. Therefore, there is a necessity to eliminate the zero-sequence-voltage (ZSV) produced by the two voltage source converters that feed the machine. Furthermore, the non-sinusoidal back electromagnetic force (back EMF) causes the circulation of a third harmonic ZSC. An OEW-PMSM high-speed starter-generator fed by a dual-inverter with a single dc-link is considered. Part I of this paper proposes a modulation for the considered topology able to eliminate instantaneously the ZSV produced. In this paper, a detailed analysis of the deadtime (DT) effect on the ZSV has been carried out and a novel hysteresis control for the ZSC using the DT as a control action is presented. This paper provides an experimental discussion on a real-time real-power emulator that plays an important role in achieving a total test of medium-voltage, high-power, high-speed induction motor drives. The use of the emulator brings cost and time savings to the test. The test bench including the emulator is characterized by connecting two modular multilevel double-star chopper-cell (DSCC) converters connected in a front-to-front way. This paper designs, builds, and tests a 400- ${\rm V}_{\rm dc}$ , 10-kW downscaled test bench. It mainly consists of the following two identical DSCC converters: 1) one DSCC converter is used as an inverter under test; and 2) the other as a real-time real-power high-fidelity emulator. Experimental waveforms confirm that the emulator can reproduce electrical and mechanical operating performance of the three-phase 200-V, 10-kW, four-pole, 9000-r/min induction motor loaded with a centrifugal compressor. The staircase modulation strategy is the best choice for asymmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACMI) because it makes the output voltage to present a high number of levels and makes one of the ACMI modules to operate at low frequency. However, the staircase modulation is usually employed without giving its deserved attention. This paper presents a clear understanding of the staircase modulation strategy and its applications in both isolated and grid-connected ACMI.  The main novelty of this paper is the obtaining of the switching function for each module. The principle of operation is carefully described, also indicating how to command the ACMI transistors. The output voltage of the two superior modules is evaluated for different values of iterations. Special attention is given to the power distribution among the ACMI modules when the staircase modulation is applied. It is demonstrated on how the power is processed in each module considering an ACMI with three modules. The analysis is presented showing the staircase modulation within a closed-loop control strategy for isolated and grid-connected modes of operation, showing that the content of this paper is valid for both modes. To improve power density and motor performance, new bearingless motor topologies combine torque and magnetic suspension coils into a single winding. Of these topologies, the parallel dual-purpose no-voltage winding is advantageous from the bearingless drive perspective because it requires the least amount of hardware. However, this topology can result in undesirable current controller performance from cross-coupling effects between the suspension and torque operation. This paper investigates these cross-coupling effects using rotating reference frame theory to derive relevant system disturbance transfer functions. The nature of this coupling is explained in relation to the machine and control parameters (inductances, resistances, controller gains) to provide insights for bearingless machine and control designers. The paper proposes and simulates different compensation techniques to minimize or eliminate the cross-coupling. It is shown that with careful machine design or with proper feedback control compensation, the motor controller can be implemented as a conventional motor drive, without knowledge of the magnetic suspension system. Emulation of an electric machine allows the testing of a drive inverter and controller of an electric drive system, prior to the manufacture of a machine prototype. This paper presents the emulation of a variable flux machine (VFM). The VFM emulator system proposed in this paper uses a detailed look-up table-based machine model for the purpose of emulation. This allows the emulator to mimic all machine magnetic and geometric behaviors such as saturation and torque ripple. In addition, the machine emulator proposed in this paper uses high-performance high-bandwidth linear amplifiers as power amplifiers. This enables a high bandwidth; leading to a high accuracy machine emulation. A detailed control description for the proposed machine emulator system and a machine model look-up table data verification against a prototype machine is initially presented. Experimental results are then presented to validate the utility of the proposed VFM emulator system to emulate various machine transient behaviors at different magnetization levels. Experimental results obtained from the emulator are subsequently compared against the experimental results obtained from a prototype VFM drive to verify the emulation accuracy. High-speed electrical drives normally require converters capable of high-frequency operation. For this reason, converters based on SiC mosfets have been spreading in this field. Nevertheless, the problems caused by the high dv/dt imposed by SiC mosfets, like the premature failure of the motor winding insulation and the electromagnetic interference generation, are drawing more and more attention of the experts of this sector. In fact, these issues can deeply affect the system reliability and, hence, can represent a limiting factor for all those applications where the continuity of operation is the highest priority. To avoid the use of SiC mosfets in the most sensitive applications, this paper presents a solution, which consists of a Si-insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based inverter fed by a Si-IGBT-based dc/dc converter performing a suitable dc voltage regulation. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to prove that a stable operation of a high-speed drive can be guaranteed through the proposed converter configuration. Interharmonic is an emerging issue in photovoltaic (PV) systems. It has been revealed in previous studies that the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is one potential source for interharmonics. In cascaded H-bridge (CHB) PV inverters, if the MPPT perturbations of the CHB cells are in-phase, the sum of the voltages of all CHB cells will oscillate with a higher amplitude, leading to an amplification of interharmonics delivered to the grid. To address this issue, a phase-shifting MPPT (PS-MPPT) method for interharmonic mitigation is proposed in this paper. By properly shifting the phase-angle of the MPPT perturbation of each CHB cell, the oscillation of the equivalent total dc voltage can be effectively mitigated, and in turn, the interharmonics can be suppressed to a large extent. The proposed PS-MPPT scheme has been demonstrated on CHB PV inverters through simulations and experimens. The implementation for generalized n-cell CHB PV inverters has further been discussed. Moreover, a hybrid PS-MPPT method is also developed to improve the interharmonic mitigation performance. The goal of the paper is to develop a hybrid modulation technique to combine space vector modulation (SVM) scheme and synchronous optimal pulsewidth modulation (SOPWM) technique for current source inverter (CSI). SVM provides better dynamic performance, but is unable to produce less total harmonic distortion (THD) on inverter current at low device switching frequency ($< $ 1 kHz). SOPWM provides less THD even at low device switching frequency, however it needs a conversion technique to operate CSI and it needs an additional control technique to improve dynamic performance. Hence to overcome these limitations, this paper develops a single modulation technique called optimal SVM technique that can achieve less THD as well as better dynamic performance. To develop optimal SVM technique, three methods have been proposed in this paper. These three methods do not require an additional conversion technique to operate CSI and they provide less THD even under low device switching frequency of 450 Hz. The huge untapped energy from ocean waves is one of the ideal solutions for world energy crisis. This paper proposes a linear-generator-based direct power conversion plant model to generate the electrical energy from ocean waves. The linear generator output is of variable magnitude and variable frequency in nature. In this paper, this variable output is converted to fixed dc voltage by using a diode bridge rectifier and a dc-link capacitor. The linear generator along with a diode bridge and a capacitor forms a wave power unit. These wave power units can be connected in series and parallel to meet the power ratings. A reliable multilevel inverter is fed from the wave power units to ensure uninterrupted tapping of power from this abundant renewable energy source. The reliable inverter operation is analyzed under open- and short-circuit faults in switches by reconfiguring the carrier waves of sine pulsewidth modulation during fault conditions. A fault detection algorithm using a single sensor at the output is also proposed to detect the faults in the switches of the proposed reliable inverter. The proposed plant model with a linear generator and a reliable inverter is simulated using ANSYS MAXWELL and MATLAB/Simulink. The plant model is tested using a programmable ac source for emulating the linear generator and the developed prototype of the diode bridge rectifier and the reliable multilevel inverter. This paper introduces a compensation strategy to deal with both current and voltage measurement errors in the three-phase pulsewidth modulated rectifier system. The dc offset and scaling errors in the voltage and current measurements cause the injection of undesired dc and unbalanced currents into the three-phase input current and subsequently lead to voltage ripple at the dc output voltage. This paper proposes a compensation scheme for current measurement error where the dc offset and scaling errors in the current measurement are estimated from the characteristic of the dc output voltage ripple combining with simple band-pass and low-pass filters. Meanwhile, an advanced current controller designed with a proportional integral plus two resonant controllers tuned at the fundamental grid frequency $({{\omega _s}})$ and $2{\omega _s}$ in the synchronous (d–q) reference frame is suggested to reject the impact of the dc offset and scaling errors in the voltage measurement. The proposed compensation method is developed without the need of extra hardware circuit, sensor, or precise information of system parameters so that it can be considered as more cost-effective and robust solution. Electric grid codes are expected to change in near future to accommodate an increased number of distributed generation units in the distribution power system without impairing its power quality. It is desired that the generators remain connected during voltage sags and provide ancillary services, such as voltage and reactive power control, ensuring the operational stability of the power system. This paper explores how the existing strategies for active and reactive power injection impact the operation of grid-tied inverters in terms of required power, current flowing, and reduction of active power delivery during the voltage sags. Such inputs are relevant to properly size converters for operation under fault events. In addition, this paper contributes to devise: 1) constant peak current control, 2) constant active current control, and 3) constant average active power control strategies for three-phase four-wire grid-tied inverters considering the natural (abc) reference frame. The design and implementation of the investigated power injection strategies are discussed, and their effectiveness and technical viability are analyzed through dynamic computational simulations under symmetrical/asymmetrical voltage sags, and variation of the short-circuit ratio. The switching speeds of next-generation power semiconductor devices, such as those made of silicon carbide and gallium nitride are roughly ten times those of conventional devices (e.g., silicon insulated-gate bipolar transistors). This increases the frequency range of the electromagnetic noise accompanying the switching operations of pulsewidth modulated (PWM) converters and worsens the influence of radiated noise. The authors have previously proposed an active common-mode filter (ACF) that reduces the radiated noise from the power cables connected to a PWM converter and evaluated its effect in reducing radiated noise by using a function generator as a common-mode (CM) noise source. In this paper, the ACF is applied to a motor drive system fed by a three-phase PWM inverter, and the attenuation characteristics of the CM voltage are evaluated. To avoid saturating the ACF, the combination of an active common-noise canceller and the ACF is discussed. The experimental results show that the system constructed in this paper can suppress the CM voltage produced by the PWM inverter over a wide frequency range from 100 to 100 MHz. This paper analyzes a cost-effective modification of the power topology commonly found in small wind turbine systems based on a passive rectifier and a boost converter. The boost-converter inductor and the input filter capacitor often placed at the rectifier output can be replaced by the generator-phase inductance. Different controller structures have been proposed for this low-cost inverter, but they have been focused on the converter itself rather than the overall turbine control. Moreover, only steady-state behavior has been demonstrated. This paper proposes a control structure only requiring retuning of the boost-current controller found in systems equipped with boost inductance, with other control loops remaining unchanged. The inductorless converter dynamic performance is studied and compared with the conventional topology in terms of current- and torque-control capability. The system efficiency, including the losses’ distribution in the generator, is analyzed. Simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the technical viability of this proposal. Many research works report the use of LCL filters for grid-interfaced PV systems. Indiscreet selection of passive LCL filter parameters may result in poor filtering and increased power losses. LCL filter parameter selection is critical to get a good performance and at the same time ensure that losses and costs stay low. This paper proposes a novel approach to design the LCL filter for a grid-interfaced PV system. A cost-based minimization approach on a cost per joule basis for each of the filter elements is explored to obtain the optimal filter design. Simulation results for a 10-kVA grid-connected inverter with an LCL filter are presented in order to verify the efficacy of the proposed design. The impact of designed filter parameters on the ripple current is also discussed in this paper. The total inductance of the LCL filter is varied and filter parameter values which give lowest cost is identified while meeting harmonic standard requirements and the fundamental voltage drop across the filter. Finally, the proposed design is also experimentally validated via a hardware prototype. Results validate the design method in terms of the harmonic attenuation and total harmonic distortion. Grid-interactive inverters allow distributed generation units to provide various ancillary services in microgrids. As the linear modulation region of inverters is restricted by the dc-bus voltage, providing ancillary services may drive the fundamental positive-sequence inverter voltage to the overmodulation region. Therefore, to operate in the linear modulation region the maximum active- and reactive-power of the inverter may have to be reduced unless pulsewidth modulation (PWM) references are adjusted. In this paper, an atypical PWM method is proposed for maximizing dc-bus utilization of grid-interactive two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSI) providing ancillary services. Two important ancillary services, i.e., negative-sequence compensation and harmonic compensation are considered in this paper. The proposed method increases the maximum active- and reactive-power that a 2L-VSI can deliver when providing ancillary services by injecting a common-mode component in the references computed based on instantaneous reference magnitudes. This paper analyzes the configuration, design, and operation of multi-MW grid connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with practical test cases provided by a 10-MW field development. In order to improve the capacity factor, the PV system operates at its maximum power point during periods of lower irradiance, and the power output is limited to a rated value at high irradiance. The proposed configuration also incorporates a utility scale battery energy storage system (BESS) connected to the grid through an independent inverter and benefits of the experience gained with a 1-MW 2-MWh BESS large demonstrator. The BESS power smoothing and frequency regulation capabilities are illustrated though combined theoretical and experimental studies. The behavior of the grid connected PV and BESS combined system is studied using a modified IEEE 14 bus test system implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC. In this paper, the theoretical analysis of the position estimation error in position-sensorless operation using pulsating square wave signal injection is presented. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon that the position estimation performance varies depending on the injection frequency. Mathematical derivation supported by simulation and experimental results shows that, in no-load condition, the voltage distortion induces position estimation error with 3rd-order harmonics if the frequency of the injected square wave is the same to the switching frequency. While, if the frequency is a half of the switching frequency or heavier load condition in either injection frequency, the effect of nonideal characteristics of inverter disappears and there is no 3rd harmonics in the position estimation error. Therefore, only the effect of cross-coupling inductance is reflected in the estimation error. As the result, the position estimation error appears in the form of 6th-order harmonics due to the spatial harmonics of inductances, and the error is relatively small compared with the switching frequency injection case. A multifunctional grid-connected inverter (MFGCI) has been a promising solution to mitigate power quality problems in distributed generation system and microgrid applications. However, the capability of a conventional MFGCI is limited when compensating a voltage-based power quality problem. In this paper, a new configuration of MFGCI is proposed to improve both voltage-based and current-based power quality issues and is named shunt-series-switched MFGCI (SSS-MFGCI). The SSS-MFGCI can be connected in series or parallel to the grid by implementing bidirectional switches to provide different modes of operation depending on various grid disturbances. The required compensating current and voltage are analytically derived considering the grid and load conditions for voltage regulation. This paper also presents the compensation strategies, control scheme, and transition scheme between different modes of the proposed SSS-MFGCI. The active power distribution network operation with the integration of various renewable distributed generations (DGs), storage units, and dynamic loads are attracting a lot of interest due to substantial benefits in maximizing the penetration of available renewable energy resources (RES). However, the risk of voltage violation in the active distribution system (ADS) is exacerbated due to increasing penetration of DGs. It has become a bottleneck to maximize the DG penetration into the system. This bottleneck can be handled by effective voltage regulation and reactive power support into ADS. Nowadays, power electronic devices are frequently used for voltage and reactive power support over the conventional approaches. In this paper, an approach to maximize the penetration of RES, such as solar, wind, etc., into ADS by maximum utilization of existing solar photovoltaic inverters (SPVI) in the system is presented. Optimal utilization of SPVI may enhance the voltage stability of the ADS and wind power penetration into the system. The proposed SPVI control approaches are depended on active power generation of solar photovoltaic (SPVG), rating and capability of SPVI, and required reactive power in the ADS. In this paper, the problem of maximum penetration of RES is formulated as an optimal power flow embedded nonlinear optimization problem subject to the physical limitations of the SPVI. The results of the analysis performed on an IEEE 33 bus system show that the proposed SPVI control strategies can improve the voltage profile of the ADS with minimization of curtailment of wind power generation. Grid-tied inverters and associated control techniques have gained importance in the domain of distributed generation. Different methods of control have been compared in the literature depending upon the ability to meet total harmonic distortion limits, damping offered to resonant oscillations, and stable operation. Multiple-loop methods compared to their single-loop counterparts have proved to be highly effective for meeting the grid regulations. In the literature, while single-loop and two-loop control systems for LCL filter have been assessed, not much study on three-loop control (TLC) has been done, possibly due to the hardware complexity and cost imparted by the increase in the number of sensors. In this paper, a TLC structure for grid connected inverters is analyzed for stability and parametric variations. Robustness of TLC is compared with single-loop grid current feedback control and a two-loop control structure. An approach to estimate the state variables is proposed in this paper, which cuts down the number of sensors and cost of implementation. The performance of the system is analyzed through simulations and results are validated in a hardware setup, under dynamic and steady-state conditions, thereby showing that this is a promising approach. This paper presents theoretical and experimental discussions on low-voltage-ride-through operation of a modular multilevel single-delta bridge-cell (SDBC) inverter intended for utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems. Modern grid codes require grid-tied inverters to provide dynamic grid support during grid-fault events by injecting reactive current. This paper discusses decoupled positive- and negative-sequence reactive-current control, focusing on asymmetric voltage sags with imbalanced magnitude and phase relationships. The main objective is to present a feedforward control method based on calculation of the zero-sequence current required for achieving power balance during normal and grid-fault conditions. Moreover, this paper demonstrates a practical method that minimizes overcurrent stress in the three inverter clusters by adjusting active power drawn from PV arrays. Experimental results on a three-phase 12.6-kVA system prove that the SDBC inverter is capable of seamlessly operating through asymmetric voltage sags. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes the enhancement of the control of a grid-connected inverter by a simplified virtual synchronous compensator (S-VSC) model working in parallel with the traditional inverter current control loops. The goal of the integration of this model into the inverter control scheme is to provide grid services, such as virtual inertia behavior, current harmonic compensation, as well as reactive grid support during faults. The S-VSC is only in charge of providing the aforementioned services, working, therefore, always at a low power level. On the other hand, the main power references are sent directly to the inverter control loops. This way, a more stable and damped operation of the inverter is obtained. In this paper, the characteristics of ripple current of a multimegawatt drive system fed by a pulse-width modulation (PWM) inverter are investigated. Based on the investigation, a novel PWM scheme is devised to reduce the switching loss of the inverter under an identical amount of torque ripple of a motor. The proposed PWM is composed of two parts. The first is minimum torque ripple PWM (MTRPWM), which is optimized in terms of the minimum torque ripple in high modulation index (MI). The second determines the minimum switching frequency while holding the average torque ripple less than the allowable value under various operating conditions. It is termed reduced switching frequency PWM (RSFPWM). Consequently, by simply changing the PWM method from conventional fixed switching frequency continuous PWM to the proposed PWM, MTRPWM and RSFPWM, simulation results show that the switching loss of the inverter driving a 3.5 MW induction motor is reduced to 51.6% while keeping the torque ripple in the allowable boundary, where MI is 1.12. This approach is applied to small-scale experimental sets consisting of an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) motor-generator set, and an induction machine MG set in an effort to verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed method. Based on these experimental results, the cost indexes of the IPMSM and the induction machine, as defined in this paper, decrease by up to 66% and 77%, respectively, when the proposed method is applied when MI is 1.12 compared with the outcome with the conventional PWM. Neutral-point-clamped (NPC) multilevel inverter fed high power drives operating at low switching frequency are prone to low-order torque pulsations. For a case of N switching angles per quarter, apart from maintaining the fundamental component, (N-1) voltage harmonics can be eliminated. Consequently, \fracN-12 or lower number of torque harmonics could be eliminated. This paper proposes an optimal pulse-width modulation (PWM), which minimizes the combined root mean square (RMS) value (\tau RMS ) of torque harmonics of order lower than $6N$ at any modulation index (M$) for an induction motor drive fed from an NPC three-level inverter. This paper considers cases of two, three, and four switching angles per quarter cycle of the pole voltage. Compared with synchronized sine-triangle PWM and selective harmonic elimination (SHE) PWM, the proposed PWM reduces the first (N-1$ ) torque harmonics (i.e., \tau _6 ) over a wide speed range. This paper presents a simplified implementation technique for direct torque control (DTC) of asymmetric six-phase induction motor drive. Current harmonics of fifth and seventh order are observed in the phase currents if conventional DTC scheme is extended for the asymmetric six-phase machine. These harmonic components are not responsible for torque production, thus causing losses in the motor winding. Synthetic vectors are generally used for reduction of current harmonics. Average voltage in $xy$ subspace is maintained to zero by synthetic vectors leading to reduction of currents in $xy$ subspace. A simplified method of implementation of synthetic vectors is proposed in this paper, which eliminates the need for designing of switching sequence and requirement of field-programmable gate array. Also, the number of synthetic vectors that can be possibly produced is increased compared with the ones developed by techniques available in the literature. This paper proposes a method to suppress the resonant current circulating between integrated half-bridge modules with phase-leg capacitors in two legs. This circuit configuration has the advantage of low stray inductance between power semiconductor devices and dc-link capacitors (phase-leg capacitors). This paper presents an analysis of the equivalent circuit for the circuit configuration that suggests that the dc-link capacitor current will increase depending on the relationship between resonant and switching frequencies. The capacitor current was experimentally evaluated under pulse-width modulation operation at switching frequencies up to 100 kHz using SiC-mosfet s. As a result, the resonant current may occur in the dc side when the resonant frequency between phase legs was close to either the fundamental or the third harmonic of the switching frequency. In order to suppress the circulating resonant current, a graphite bus bar is applied to the phase-connecting bus bar. Widespread deployment of voltage source inverter units in high penetration applications such as distributed generation and stand-alone renewable energy conditioning imposes stringent demands on reliability and output voltage regulation. Reported literature provides numerous solutions for output voltage regulation, which includes twin aspects of command tracking and output impedance control. Most of these methods rely on the measurement of at least two separate variables per phase, which compromises overall reliability. This paper focuses on a dual-loop voltage regulation approach requiring only output voltage measurement. The outer loop of a control scheme is used to assure prompt tracking of the inverter output voltage, whereas the inner derivative feedback loop improves system stability by damping the output filter resonance. Digital realization of this derivative term is generally a challenge with many methods currently developed for resolving it. These methods are, however, still facing drawbacks, which have inclusively been explained in this paper. Subsequently, a new digital derivative is proposed whose performance is predicted analytically and then validated through experimental results with a 7.5-kVA inverter prototype. The advent of microgrids paved the way for energy decentralization and self-sufficiency among consumers. Reciprocating engine-driven synchronous generators (also known as gensets) are one of the most commonly found distributed energy resources (DERs) installed in a microgrid. A key concern in microgrid operation is the frequency regulation, especially when it is islanded from the main grid. In recent years, the inverter-based DERs have witnessed huge growth. When fast-responding inverter-based DERs are working in parallel with the slow-acting gensets within the islanded mixed source microgrid, many challenges exist in coordinating their operation. In particular, an inverter-based DER is susceptible to collapse due to its large transient loading and this can bring down the entire system. This paper investigates load sharing and proposes new techniques for improved frequency regulation in an islanded mixed source microgrid. An improved coordination scheme between DERs is presented in this paper by accounting for their inertial and governor response characteristics. The unequal transient load sharing between gensets and inverter-based DERs is redistributed to prevent system collapse as well as achieve desired frequency regulation. This paper proposes a decentralized control scheme for controlling active and reactive power of grid-tied ac-stacked photovoltaic (PV) inverter architecture using single member phase compensation. Reactive power control is required for the next generation of grid-tied smart PV inverter systems in power networks with high PV penetration. The decentralized control scheme proposed in this paper allows for a fully distributed architecture, both in terms of active and reactive power control and physical implementation of a PV system. This will result in higher reliability and potentially lower cost with minimum communications requirements. A decentralized controller enables higher switching frequencies that can shrink passive components. Therefore, string voltage variations due to voltage drop across passive components will be negligible and the system will be controlled with minimum communications requirement. The relative gain array approach has been used to study the feasibility of the decentralized control scheme. Detailed modeling and analysis are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach and the effect of this approach on control implementation. Finally, effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach is verified using mathematical modeling, simulation, and a lab-scale experimental setup in different operation conditions. In this paper, a generalization for three-phase four-wire inverters is proposed. In this generalization, an arbitrary number of three-phase four-wire dc–ac converters are cascaded by means of injection transformers, in order to compose a resultant inverter with a single dc link. Its converters may have four or three legs composed by a pair of the complementary insulated-gate bipolar transistor. The injection transformers have different turns ratios calculated in order to maximize the number of levels produced in the output voltage. In this way, the converter cells within the inverter are asymmetrical in terms of power rating. In this paper, the proposed generalization is applied to a specific case, where two four-wire converters are cascaded, which generates four different proposed configurations. These configurations are analyzed in detail and compared with the conventional four-leg inverter by means of data acquired from simulation and experimental results. In these results, the proposed and conventional inverters feed an unbalanced three-phase load accordingly to the same reference voltage, and the load current total harmonic distortion, voltage weighted total harmonic distortion, transformers and semiconductors losses, switching frequency, and power rating are analyzed in order to conclude that proposed configurations present better performance, even though they have more semiconductors and demand injection transformers. This paper discusses and compares phase-shifted pulse-width modulation (PS-PWM) and level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) in a modular multilevel single-delta bridge-cell (SDBC) inverter for utility-scale grid-tied photovoltaic applications. This three-phase SDBC inverter provides the capability of operating even under power-distribution imbalances not only among three clusters, but also among cascaded bridge cells in each cluster. The main focus of this research lies in analyzing the capability of operation under severe power-distribution imbalances and presenting power-balancing methods based on zero-sequence current injection, which result in an extended power-balancing capability. This paper highlights that LS-PWM is superior to PS-PWM in both power-balancing capability and harmonic performance at the ac side of the SDBC inverter when operating under power-distribution imbalances. Finite state model predictive control (MPC) has been recently applied to several converter topologies, as it can provide many advantages over other MPC techniques. The advantages of MPC include fast dynamics, multitarget control capability, and relatively easy implementation on digital control platforms. However, its inherent variable switching frequency and lower steady-state waveform quality with respect to standard control, which includes an appropriate modulation technique, represent a limitation to its applicability. Modulated model predictive control (M2 PC) combines all the advantages of MPC with the fixed switching frequency characteristic of pulse-width modulation algorithms. The work presented in this paper focuses on the indirect matrix converter (IMC), where the tight coupling between rectifier stage and inverter stage has to be taken into account in the M2PC design. This paper proposes an M2PC solution, suitable for IMC, with a switching pattern that emulates the desired waveform quality features of space vector modulation for matrix converters. The switching sequences of the rectifier stage and inverter stage are rearranged in order to always achieve zero-current switching on the rectifier stage, thus simplifying the current commutation strategy. In this paper, it is described how the circulating current flows between inverters that have isolated dc link such as cascaded H-bridge (CHB) topology when they are operating in parallel. In this case, zero sequence circulating current, which normally flows through shared dc link, cannot flow between inverters in parallel. However, circulating current is provoked by asynchronous switching instant of devices, difference of dc-link voltages of parallel inverters, and unbalanced impedance. The circulating current should be suppressed by a sharing inductor that is inserted between inverters. Generally, all of the inverters should synthesize the same output voltage reference for load current control to minimize the size of this sharing reactor. However, this conventional method cannot guarantee diminishing circulating current in the transient state and even in the steady state. In this paper, in order to reduce sharing reactance, after deriving circulating current model from general case of n-parallel operation, circulating current control method is devised based on the model. This proposed algorithm is applied to active front end five-level-CHB inverter system for medium voltage drive. This paper proposes a coordinated multilayer control strategy for the energy management (EM) of grid-connected ac microgrids. The strategy predicts the customer's load demand and the photovoltaics (PV) power generation for a day-ahead EM. It utilizes the PV power generations and the bidirectional energy transactions from electric vehicles and battery storage to provide a combined response for load support. The system also predicts any uncertainties in customers demand and power generations and implements day-ahead precautionary measures to tackle that uncertainty. Two different prediction strategies are used, autoregressive moving average and artificial neural networks, and their performances for a day-ahead EM are investigated. The reference power from the tertiary layer EM is sent to the local controllers for power regulation at the inverter level. Additionally, the varying power output reference obtained from a day-ahead EM is classified into the slow, medium, and fast variations. The performance of the local controller employed in the interfacing grid-connected three-phase inverter is tested during the above-mentioned power reference variations. Energy storage deployment in residential and commercial applications is an attractive proposition for ensuring proper utilization of solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation. Energy storage can be controlled and coordinated with PV generation to satisfy electricity demand and minimize electricity purchases from the grid. For optimal energy management, PV generation and load demand uncertainties need to be considered when designing a control method for the PV-based storage system. Another resource available at the residential level is the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) which also has bi-directional power flow capability. The charging and discharging routines of the PEV can be controlled to help reduce the energy drawn from the power grid during peak hours. In this paper, a method of coordinated optimal control between PV-based storage and PEV storage is proposed considering the stochastic nature of solar PV generation and load demand. The stochastic dual dynamic programming algorithm is employed to optimize the charge/discharge profiles of PV-based storage and PEV storage to minimize the daily household electricity purchase cost from the grid. This paper proposes two hybrid asymmetric cascaded multilevel inverters for driving medium-voltage open-end winding motors. Each phase of the proposed systems consist of a three-level (3L) H-bridge cell and a nine-level (9L) H-bridge cell connected in series. An unequal dc-voltage ratio of 1:8 between cells is used, providing 19 phase voltage levels. The topologies of the 9L H-bridge cell are based on modular multilevel cascade converter (MMCC) with double-star chopper cells, while the 3L H-bridge cell is fed by a floating capacitor. Compared to conventional MMCC for open-end stator winding motor drives, the proposed inverters can produce more phase voltage levels. In addition, they require a smaller number of power semiconductor switches, drivers and capacitors. This paper proposes a new inverter topology based on the active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter with capability to integrate one energy storage system (ESS) per inverter leg with an independent state of charge control, so that each inverter leg has two dc ports and one ac port. The primary dc port is common to all inverter legs and it is connected to the main power source. The secondary dc port is suitable for ESS connection because of its two-quadrant operation, with bidirectional current capability, so that the ESS can be charged and discharged with regulated current. Integration of a secondary dc port with independent control also allows the use of different ESS technologies for each inverter leg to compose a hybrid ESS. Redundant switching states of the proposed structure are used to balance the energy exchanged between the secondary dc port and the dc bus capacitors. Theoretical propositions were experimentally validated through a 1-kW single-phase inverter with a secondary dc port connected to a 230-V ESS and ac port connected to an LC filter feeding a linear load. AC current regulators are susceptible to controller windup, i.e., the condition in which the controller dynamic states ramp the controller output up to very large values when the commanded reference cannot be achieved because of inverter saturation. Recovering from saturation can take considerable time once the linear mode has been restored, which degrades the current regulator's transient performance and can also impact on its stability. This paper proposes an improved formulation using the concept of signal conditioning, where windup is avoided by feeding the controller states entirely from the constrained inverter pulsewidth modulation command. Unlike previous approaches, this technique has the benefit of a simplified realization, since the controller transfer functions do not require algebraic reformulation. This makes it particularly suitable for multiple cascaded resonators used in harmonic compensation systems. Transformerless inverters are getting popular in distributed photovoltaic power generation (PVPG) system due to its light weight, low cost, and higher efficiency in power conversion. However, the production of leakage current leads to severe electromagnetic interference and operational insecurity, which declines the reliability and efficiency of the overall system. Besides that many of the topologies have been addressed with real power injection capabilities in the literature. Therefore, in this paper, an improved hybrid-bridge (IH-B) inverter for transformerless PVPG system is proposed with 1) reduced leakage current by abolishing the fluctuations in common-mode voltage (CMV) due to switch junction capacitances and 2) reactive power capability with a modified sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation technique. This topology is constructed with the combination of bidirectional clamping branch and hybrid-bridge (H-B) inverter topology to maintain CMV at half of the dc-link voltage and ensure better quality of output waveforms at different power factors of the grid. Further, MATLAB simulation results of the IH-B and H-B topologies are presented and compared to prove the potential benefits of the proposed topology. This paper investigates the need of coordinated operation of conservation voltage reduction (CVR) in the presence of electric vehicle (EV) penetration in the active distribution network. In order to analyze the impact of both the technologies (CVR and EV), a time horizon-based model predictive Volt/VAR optimization (VVO) methodology has been introduced in smart grid framework. The proposed VVO methodology operates in centralized as well as local controls under different time scale of operation, including cloud transient effects on solar photovoltaic (PV) power output. Moreover, the control algorithms also consider the uncertainties in load demand and PV power generation. The VVO methodology has been validated with and without presence of EV loads in the distribution network. The VVO includes the impact of different EV charging loads having the ability of participation in reactive power support at selected charging points. This is also referred to as vehicle-to-grid operation in terms of reactive power dispatch only. Besides, the voltage and VAR regulation through smart inverters of PVs and EV charging station has been fruitfully utilized in global as well as local domain. A real-time Volt/VAR droop based controller has been introduced to control the smart inverters reactive power dispatch. To validate the developed methodology, a real-time cosimulation framework, using real-time digital simulator and Python interface, has been built. The proposed model predictive VVO algorithm has been tested and validated on a modified IEEE 34 bus test system. The simulated results reveal that significant CVR energy savings and losses reduction has been achieved without violating the system constraints. Unipolar-pulsewidth modulation (UP-PWM) inverter takes advantages of high power efficiency and small output chokes which is widely used in the industry. However, UP-PWM inverters cannot be used in parallel operation due to a current unbalance problem. This paper studies the current unbalance problem of paralleled UP-PWM inverters with common dc bus and ac bus. First, the problem of unbalanced inductor current is defined and analyzed. Second, a technique to eliminate unbalanced currents is proposed. The proposed current balancing technique only requires one more current sensor in an inverter module rather than changing converter topology or modulation method, which makes it possible to apply UP-PWM inverters in parallel-operation while keeping the advantages of unipolar switching. The proposed current balancing method is verified by both simulation and hardware experiment. 1.5 kV dc link voltage has been a trend for the solar industry. Moving from 1 to 1.5 kV dc voltage can increase string length, enhance inverter conversion ability, increase array block sizes, and improve performance. Multilevel converters are the natural choices while control becomes more complicated. If a simple two-level converter is adopted, the 1.7 kV device may not be applicable considering the voltage derating for certain failure rate. Therefore, devices with higher blocking voltage should be considered. This paper reports for the first time the performance characterization of a 2.5 kV silicon carbide (SiC) mosfet. The integration of switched-capacitor techniques into multilevel inverters (MLIs) with a dc source string contributes to the boosting of voltage gain, renders it particularly attractive in reducing the number of input dc sources in the series string. However, the recent two-stage MLI topologies suffer from high voltage stress across the backend H-bridge. Addressing this concern, an improved topology, namely the one-switched-capacitor integrated MLI (1SCI-MLI) is proposed in this paper. An extended topology of 1SC-MLI is also established by appropriate incorporation of another switched-capacitor circuit. The two proposed topologies are endowed with voltage boosting capability. They also feature low switch count and low number of dc sources. More importantly, they resolve the high voltage stress problem in the existing counterparts. Their corresponding operational analysis and comparisons with recent MLI topologies are discussed. This paper proposes a new grid current controller for a photovoltaic (PV) module integrated buck inverter using a single pulsewidth modulation switch and an unfolding H-bridge, which significantly reduces switching losses. To achieve this, an internal grid current loop with active damping is presented with an LCL filter to connect it to the utility grid. The problem of the filter natural resonance is solved by means of a virtual impedance (active damping), demanding no additional sensor. Several wireless charging methods are under development or available as an aftermarket option in the light-duty automotive market. However, there are not a sufficient number of studies detailing the vehicle integration methods, particularly a complete vehicle integration with higher power levels. This paper presents the design, development, implementation, and vehicle integration of wireless power transfer (WPT) based electric vehicle charging systems for various test vehicles. Before having the standards effective, it is expected that WPT technology first will be integrated as an aftermarket retrofitting approach. Inclusion of this technology on production vehicles is contingent upon the release of the international standards. The power stages of the system are introduced with the design specifications and control systems, including the active front-end rectifier with power factor correction, high frequency power inverter, high frequency isolation transformer, coupling coils, vehicle side full-bridge rectifier and filter, and the vehicle battery. The operating principles of the control and communication systems are presented. Aftermarket conversion approaches, including the WPT on-board charger integration, WPT CHAdeMO integration, and WPT direct battery connection scenarios, are described. A hybrid modular multilevel converter (H-MMC) for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system is presented in this paper. The array of PV panels is connected in each submodule of the converter. The submodules are connected in series to form the dc link for each phase. The dc-link voltage is unipolar and multilevel in nature, which is converted to ac voltage by a low frequency converter. This topology can be applicable at high power by increasing number of submodules per phase. The H-MMC has many advantages compared to conventional MMC, e.g., more voltage levels, less capacitor count, no circulating current, higher efficiency, and less foot print. A global maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is proposed for this converter, which requires the voltage and current signals of only one submodule. The limitations of global MPPT under partial shading are overcome through distributed MPPT. A least-MPPT algorithm is presented to make the three phase powers balanced under nonuniform partial shading among the phases. The usefulness of this converter configuration with two different MPPT algorithms (global and distributed) is investigated through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation. A single-phase version of the converter with global and distributed MPPT is experimentally validated considering partial shading condition. The main objective of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter is to inject the PV power into the ac grid. Generally, due to variations in solar irradiance, inverters operate below their rated current. Therefore, this current margin can be used to perform ancillary services, such as reactive power control and harmonic current compensation. However, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of these ancillary services on the converter. The harmonic current compensation, for example, affects the efficiency of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms. Therefore, this paper presents a mathematical modeling that relates the harmonic current compensation with the oscillation in the dc-link capacitor voltage, validated through simulation and experimental results. Simulation results show the instantaneous and dynamic efficiency of MPPT algorithms during rapidly irradiance variations and harmonic current compensation. A gate driving for power devices is a key technology to further improve switching characteristics. With the help of digital gate driver IC, the switching behavior of power devices can be enhanced even under high-speed switching. In this paper, an evaluation platform for determining the optimal switching pattern of an active gate drive control is proposed for an inverter circuit. A high speed optimization system is built up to search for an advantageous switching pattern that reduces total switching loss of two power devices in an inverter circuit and constrains surge voltage simultaneously. The proposed online optimization demonstrates its feasibility for the full-bridge inverter circuit, which is rated at 500 V with digital active gate drive control. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization system is able to obtain optimal switching pattern from $64^{60}$ possible combinations of switching patterns within 15 min, which is 6 times faster than the previous study. Optimizations can also conducted under different load current conditions. Eventually, the obtained optimal pattern yields up to 42% reduction in the total switching loss when it constrains surge voltage to minimum compared with the conventional driving pattern.
