Emulation of an electric machine allows the testing of a drive inverter and controller of an electric drive system, prior to the manufacture of a machine prototype. This paper presents the emulation of a variable flux machine (VFM). The VFM emulator system proposed in this paper uses a detailed look-up table-based machine model for the purpose of emulation. This allows the emulator to mimic all machine magnetic and geometric behaviors such as saturation and torque ripple. In addition, the machine emulator proposed in this paper uses high-performance high-bandwidth linear amplifiers as power amplifiers. This enables a high bandwidth; leading to a high accuracy machine emulation. A detailed control description for the proposed machine emulator system and a machine model look-up table data verification against a prototype machine is initially presented. Experimental results are then presented to validate the utility of the proposed VFM emulator system to emulate various machine transient behaviors at different magnetization levels. Experimental results obtained from the emulator are subsequently compared against the experimental results obtained from a prototype VFM drive to verify the emulation accuracy. Some inverter-fed motors, particularly at higher power ratings, are supplied with a shaft brush in order to help mitigate bearing currents. As more inverters are applied to motors in Class I Division 1/Zone 1 and Class I Division 2/Zone 2 locations, there is a need to understand whether a shaft brush can be safely applied in such an environment. This paper addresses the physics of why this is a concern and a methodology to evaluate the relative safety of two example cases. These issues are considered from the perspective of users, manufacturers of inverters and motors, and certifying bodies. The question posed in the title of this paper is answered by considering whether the addition of a shaft brush to an inverter-fed motor in a Class I hazardous location makes the system more safe or less safe. The staircase modulation strategy is the best choice for asymmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACMI) because it makes the output voltage to present a high number of levels and makes one of the ACMI modules to operate at low frequency. However, the staircase modulation is usually employed without giving its deserved attention. This paper presents a clear understanding of the staircase modulation strategy and its applications in both isolated and grid-connected ACMI.  The main novelty of this paper is the obtaining of the switching function for each module. The principle of operation is carefully described, also indicating how to command the ACMI transistors. The output voltage of the two superior modules is evaluated for different values of iterations. Special attention is given to the power distribution among the ACMI modules when the staircase modulation is applied. It is demonstrated on how the power is processed in each module considering an ACMI with three modules. The analysis is presented showing the staircase modulation within a closed-loop control strategy for isolated and grid-connected modes of operation, showing that the content of this paper is valid for both modes. This paper is concerned with the use of a three-level inverter for a synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM). The SynRM suffers from a poor power factor due to poor machine saliency. This makes it harder to operate the three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter due to a strict requirement to have the two dc-link capacitor voltages balanced. This paper proposes a new nearest three vector modulation algorithm which can balance the two dc-link capacitors even at poor machine saliency ratio (poor power factor). In this paper, a method of sizing the two dc-link capacitors based on the machine power is also proposed. A comparison between two- and three-level inverters was conducted. This paper proposes a vector control strategy for independent control of two permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) using a single four-leg inverter (4LI). An expanded two-arm modulation to obtain a balanced three-phase output voltage is described. This paper also proposes a method to compensate for the fluctuations in the neutral point voltage of two split capacitors in the dc link. This paper presents theoretical and experimental discussions on low-voltage-ride-through operation of a modular multilevel single-delta bridge-cell (SDBC) inverter intended for utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems. Modern grid codes require grid-tied inverters to provide dynamic grid support during grid-fault events by injecting reactive current. This paper discusses decoupled positive- and negative-sequence reactive-current control, focusing on asymmetric voltage sags with imbalanced magnitude and phase relationships. The main objective is to present a feedforward control method based on calculation of the zero-sequence current required for achieving power balance during normal and grid-fault conditions. Moreover, this paper demonstrates a practical method that minimizes overcurrent stress in the three inverter clusters by adjusting active power drawn from PV arrays. Experimental results on a three-phase 12.6-kVA system prove that the SDBC inverter is capable of seamlessly operating through asymmetric voltage sags. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pump-back test is widely adopted in the industry for characterizing and qualifying high-power converters. One popular pump-back test configuration is to tie the dc links of two converters together and circulate the current through the inductor connected between the ac terminals. In this configuration, one of the converters operates in the voltage mode to generate the virtual grid and the other converter regulates the circulating current, where hysteresis control could be applied. However, the switching characteristics of hysteresis control are unique due to the pulsewidth modulation type voltage being the virtual grid. This paper contributes to analyzing the switching frequency characteristics of the hysteresis control in this pump-back test configuration. The switching frequency tracking phenomenon is revealed and reported in this paper for the first time. The ever growing penetration of distributed generation (DG) in a distribution network has a profound impact on network protection and stability. Traditional protection schemes and algorithms need to be extensively investigated as more and more DGs get introduced into the network. The current version of IEEE Standard 1547 does not present a comprehensive solution for fault current detection in the presence of various kinds of DGs. Power electronic inverter-based DGs (IBDGs) are of special concern in distribution network protection as they are often incapable of providing sufficient fault current and their controllers play a principal role in the DG behavior. In this paper, the effects of voltage and current controllers for IBDGs on industrial and commercial power system protection schemes are investigated. It is shown that the inverter control mode has a direct impact on its fault current levels and duration. A simplified distribution network model with IBDG operating under voltage and current control modes was tested to verify the effects of these controllers. This paper proposes a family of hybrid converter topologies which can supply simultaneous dc and ac loads from a single dc input. These topologies are realized by replacing the controlled switch of single-switch boost converters with a voltage-source-inverter bridge network. The resulting hybrid converters require lesser number of switches to provide dc and ac outputs with an increased reliability, resulting from its inherent shoot-through protection in the inverter stage. Such multioutput converters with better power processing density and reliability can be well suited for systems with simultaneous dc and ac loads, e.g., nanogrids in residential applications. The proposed converter, studied in this paper, is called boost-derived hybrid converter (BDHC) as it is obtained from the conventional boost topology. The steady-state behavior of the BDHC has been studied in this paper, and it is compared with conventional designs. A suitable pulse width modulation (PWM) control strategy, based upon unipolar sine-PWM, is described. A DSP-based feedback controller is designed to regulate the dc as well as ac outputs. A 600-W laboratory prototype is used to validate the operation of the converter. The proposed converter is able to supply dc and ac loads at 100 V and 110 V (rms), respectively, from a 48-V dc input. The performance of the converter is demonstrated with inductive and nonlinear loads. The converter exhibits superior cross-regulation properties to dynamic load-change events. The ability of an electrical drive to continue operation without tripping in spite of short-duration voltage sags or power supply interruptions is known as power failure ride-through capability. Critical production processes in industries require the drives to smoothly ride-through during momentary power interruptions. The reliability of the drive is dependent on the maximum duration for which a total power supply failure can be tolerated without process interruption. This paper presents a method to extend the duration of the ride-through in voltage-source-inverter-fed vector-controlled induction motor drives with a front-end diode bridge rectifier. The proposed method minimizes the losses in the system during the ride-through, thereby enabling a longer ride-through duration. The method only requires a modification of the control software and hence is easy to implement. This paper also briefly describes two conventional methods used for ride-through and compares the proposed method with the conventional methods to clearly bring out its advantage. Simulation study using MATLAB/PLECS verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. Hardware implementation of the method on a 30-kW induction machine indicates an extension of up to 34% in the ride-through duration with the proposed method, as compared with the conventional method. This paper presents an improved dc-link voltage balancing algorithm for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter by considering phase current direction. Detailed studies on the effects of change in load current direction on the dc-link capacitor voltages are presented. A maximum value of power factor is numerically derived, above which it affects the capacitor voltage balancing capability. Compared with the previously presented research work, the inputs to the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation block are the three phase currents and the difference between the two capacitor voltages. Depending on the states of the two dc-link capacitor voltages and phase current direction, redundant voltage vector sequences are selected. The selected vectors keep the capacitor voltage deviations within 5% of the total dc-link voltage. Two zero switching vectors (i.e., PPP and NNN) are also removed from all subsectors of the earlier proposed strategy, which one used to produce higher common-mode voltages. Detailed simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper for a 6.0-kW surface permanent-magnet synchronous machine. This paper presents the bilateral operation of a transformer-less H-bridge inverter as a power flow controller and fault current limiter in low-voltage distribution network. A novel control strategy has been developed to initiate and activate the H-bridge inverter to control the power flow at point of common coupling (PCC). On the other hand, the H-bridge inverter operation like a short-circuit current limiter during grid disturbance event and its smooth reinsertion after fault clearance have also been clarified. Besides, an island mode control strategy incorporating synchronization controller, and proper coordination with flip flops have been implemented in order to synchronize the microgrid with the main grid before reclosing the circuit breaker. The results confirm: The effectiveness and feasibility of the novel control methodology in activating the real power flow; the inverter capability of minimizing the short-circuit current during fault and the successful resynchronization of the microgrid voltage source inverter (VSI) and the H-bridge inverter to the main grid. This paper proposes a method to suppress the resonant current circulating between integrated half-bridge modules with phase-leg capacitors in two legs. This circuit configuration has the advantage of low stray inductance between power semiconductor devices and dc-link capacitors (phase-leg capacitors). This paper presents an analysis of the equivalent circuit for the circuit configuration that suggests that the dc-link capacitor current will increase depending on the relationship between resonant and switching frequencies. The capacitor current was experimentally evaluated under pulse-width modulation operation at switching frequencies up to 100 kHz using SiC-mosfet s. As a result, the resonant current may occur in the dc side when the resonant frequency between phase legs was close to either the fundamental or the third harmonic of the switching frequency. In order to suppress the circulating resonant current, a graphite bus bar is applied to the phase-connecting bus bar. This paper discusses and compares phase-shifted pulse-width modulation (PS-PWM) and level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) in a modular multilevel single-delta bridge-cell (SDBC) inverter for utility-scale grid-tied photovoltaic applications. This three-phase SDBC inverter provides the capability of operating even under power-distribution imbalances not only among three clusters, but also among cascaded bridge cells in each cluster. The main focus of this research lies in analyzing the capability of operation under severe power-distribution imbalances and presenting power-balancing methods based on zero-sequence current injection, which result in an extended power-balancing capability. This paper highlights that LS-PWM is superior to PS-PWM in both power-balancing capability and harmonic performance at the ac side of the SDBC inverter when operating under power-distribution imbalances. This paper deals with the design of the power train for a hybrid electric motorcycle (HEM). The HEM power train is composed of an internal combustion engine coupled to a synchronous electric machine (EM). The EM is fed by a standard three-phase inverter connected to a high-voltage battery pack. Low weight and volume are the main requirements for HEMs, and the energy storage system (ESS) is the most critical part. Different kinds of ESSs are compared to choose the best solution balancing cost, volume, and weight. A methodology of investigation is proposed in order to recognize all the data necessary to find out the ESS. Moreover, the design choices adopted for the electric drive are reported. In order to predict EM, power converter, and battery pack performances, efficiency maps have been computed. The whole power train has been prototyped. Experimental tests of the HEM prototype on test bench and on a real racetrack are presented. All the experimental measurements highlight a significant performance enhancement of the new HEM with respect to the original one. This paper introduces a three-phase grid-connected inverter for commercial-scale photovoltaic systems. The circuit topology combines an ac-inductor-less active bridge with a parallel-connected pulsewidth modulation inverter acting as an instantaneous reactive power compensator. The active bridge, called a 120° conduction inverter, operates at a switching frequency equal to the grid frequency and outputs a 120° rectangular current, while the compensator eliminates the harmonic currents included in the rectangular current. The main advantage of this strategy is the reduction in size of the required ac inductor by a factor of 4, as well as the reduction of power losses in the switching devices. The theoretical analysis clearly shows that the compensator can synthesize a sinusoidal output current by controlling only instantaneous reactive power, thus eliminating the need for electrolytic capacitors. A 5-kW experimental setup validates the operating principle and the control method of the proposed inverter and exhibits an inverter efficiency as high as 99.2% with Si superjunction mosfets. Many research works report the use of LCL filters for grid-interfaced PV systems. Indiscreet selection of passive LCL filter parameters may result in poor filtering and increased power losses. LCL filter parameter selection is critical to get a good performance and at the same time ensure that losses and costs stay low. This paper proposes a novel approach to design the LCL filter for a grid-interfaced PV system. A cost-based minimization approach on a cost per joule basis for each of the filter elements is explored to obtain the optimal filter design. Simulation results for a 10-kVA grid-connected inverter with an LCL filter are presented in order to verify the efficacy of the proposed design. The impact of designed filter parameters on the ripple current is also discussed in this paper. The total inductance of the LCL filter is varied and filter parameter values which give lowest cost is identified while meeting harmonic standard requirements and the fundamental voltage drop across the filter. Finally, the proposed design is also experimentally validated via a hardware prototype. Results validate the design method in terms of the harmonic attenuation and total harmonic distortion. In this paper, the theoretical analysis of the position estimation error in position-sensorless operation using pulsating square wave signal injection is presented. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon that the position estimation performance varies depending on the injection frequency. Mathematical derivation supported by simulation and experimental results shows that, in no-load condition, the voltage distortion induces position estimation error with 3rd-order harmonics if the frequency of the injected square wave is the same to the switching frequency. While, if the frequency is a half of the switching frequency or heavier load condition in either injection frequency, the effect of nonideal characteristics of inverter disappears and there is no 3rd harmonics in the position estimation error. Therefore, only the effect of cross-coupling inductance is reflected in the estimation error. As the result, the position estimation error appears in the form of 6th-order harmonics due to the spatial harmonics of inductances, and the error is relatively small compared with the switching frequency injection case. A multifunctional grid-connected inverter (MFGCI) has been a promising solution to mitigate power quality problems in distributed generation system and microgrid applications. However, the capability of a conventional MFGCI is limited when compensating a voltage-based power quality problem. In this paper, a new configuration of MFGCI is proposed to improve both voltage-based and current-based power quality issues and is named shunt-series-switched MFGCI (SSS-MFGCI). The SSS-MFGCI can be connected in series or parallel to the grid by implementing bidirectional switches to provide different modes of operation depending on various grid disturbances. The required compensating current and voltage are analytically derived considering the grid and load conditions for voltage regulation. This paper also presents the compensation strategies, control scheme, and transition scheme between different modes of the proposed SSS-MFGCI. In this paper, we investigate the variation in performance of variable speed induction motors fed by inverters with grades of core materials used for stators and rotors from both results of measurement and finite element analysis. Identical shaped stator/rotor cores are manufactured by using several kinds of electrical steel sheets from low to high grades. Then, the characteristics of these motors are measured. Finite element analysis is applied to these motors to understand the measured results by separating losses and torques according to origins. The measured motor characteristics are found to be in good agreement with the results of the analysis. The analysis reveals the variation in each loss component with electrical steel sheets. Finally, the strong and weak points of the application of high-grade electrical steel sheets to the variable speed induction motors are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a zero-voltage ride-through (ZVRT) method and an LCL filter design method to meet the fault ride-through (FRT) requirements for a single-phase grid-connected inverter with a minimized LCL filter. A high inverter output current overshoot occurs at a grid voltage sag and a grid voltage recovery, when a low-inductance LCL filter design is employed in order to minimize the filter volume. In order to suppress the current overshoot, a high-speed gate-block operation and the design method of the minimized LCL filter are proposed. In particular, the filter design considers the delay time in the gate-block operation in order to clarify the reduction limitation of the inductance in the LCL filter. As a result, the maximum inverter output current overshoot is suppressed to 146% by the high-speed gate-block operation and the designed LCL filter, where the impedances of an interconnected inductor and a filter inductor are 1.0% and 0.78% of the inverter normalized impedance, respectively. A programmable electronic load (PEL) solution is usually needed for comprehensive testing of power supplies. In this paper, a novel PEL based on a hybrid five-level voltage source inverter (VSI) is introduced to emulate a variety of static load behaviors, such as R, L, C loads, high-frequency harmonic loads, and unbalanced loads. Dynamic load behavior, for example, modulation loads, can also be achieved in this paper. A dedicated control structure is proposed for the emulation of different load behaviors and the detailed compensator design is presented to evaluate the system dynamic performance. The proposed PEL system has isolated active dc links to support multilevel converter topology, and it can either dump the energy to a passive load or recycle the energy back to the utility grid through another VSI. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of proposed control methods in terms of successfully achieving a variety of load profile functions. This paper presents theoretical and experimental discussions on a practical speed-sensorless start-up method for an induction motor driven by a modular multilevel cascade inverter based on double-star chopper cells (MMCI-DSCC) from standstill to middle speed. This motor drive is suitable, particularly for a large-capacity fan- or blower-like load. The load torque is proportional to a square of the motor mechanical speed. The start-up method is characterized by combining capacitor-voltage control with motor-speed control. The motor-speed control with the minimal stator current plays a crucial role in eliminating a speed sensor from the drive system and in reducing an ac-voltage fluctuation occurring across each dc capacitor. Experimental results obtained from the 400-V 15-kW downscaled system with no speed sensor verify that the motor-speed control proposed for the DSCC-based drive system can enhance the start-up torque by a factor of three under the same ac-voltage fluctuation. There are several ways to model three-phase gridconnected voltage-source inverters (VSIs) with an $LCL$ filter. Such models often use simplifications like constant dc-link voltage or averaging over a switching period. These simplifications remove transistor switching and dc-link capacitor dynamics from the model. In this paper, a comprehensive modeling of a three-phase VSI, including an $LCL$ filter, is described and compared to models using one or more of the aforementioned simplifications. In this paper, a control strategy for the parallel operation of three-phase inverters in a modular online uninterruptable power supply (UPS) system is proposed. The UPS system is composed of a number of dc/acs with LC filter connected to the same ac critical bus and an ac/dc that forms the dc bus. The proposed control includes two layers: 1) individual layer and 2) recovery layer. In individual layer, virtual impedance concept is employed in order to achieve active power sharing while individual reactive power is calculated to modify output voltage phases to achieve reactive power sharing among different modules. Recovery layer is mainly responsible for guaranteeing synchronization capability with the utility and voltage recovery. With the proposed control, improved voltage-transient performance can be achieved and also dc/ac modules can be plugged in and out flexibly while controlling the ac critical bus voltage, thus allowing plug’n’play or hot-swap capability. Detailed control architecture of the individual and recovery layers is presented in this paper. The power factor and total harmonic distortion (THD) are important considerations when designing an output filter. In the case of the photovoltaic (PV) ac-module, the size and weight also have to be taken into consideration. This paper proposes an output filter to reduce size and weight, and provides the optimal design method for a PV ac-module. The proposed output filter consists mainly of a conventional CL filter with a trap filter. The trap filter is used to eliminate the harmonic at the switching frequency that contains most of the harmonics. Therefore, total inductance and the size of the filter can be reduced although the output filter components are increased. This paper presents analysis of the proposed filter characteristics in detail. Also, an optimal design method reducing the size of the output filter components including the damping resistor is proposed. The proposed methods are verified on the experimental prototype rated at 320 W with an ac-module based on the interleaved flyback inverter. This paper proposes the enhancement of the control of a grid-connected inverter by a simplified virtual synchronous compensator (S-VSC) model working in parallel with the traditional inverter current control loops. The goal of the integration of this model into the inverter control scheme is to provide grid services, such as virtual inertia behavior, current harmonic compensation, as well as reactive grid support during faults. The S-VSC is only in charge of providing the aforementioned services, working, therefore, always at a low power level. On the other hand, the main power references are sent directly to the inverter control loops. This way, a more stable and damped operation of the inverter is obtained. Paralleled inverters are not only a suitable approach to increase the power capacity, but also have the capability of common mode voltage (CMV) reduction, or even elimination. The original zero CMV modulation scheme for paralleled inverters suffers from the current jump problem in phase-leg currents. This current jump phenomenon amplifies the peak values of differential-mode circulating current (DMCC) and zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC), which is adverse for the design of coupled inductor and common-mode inductor. This paper introduces the modified modulation scheme, which can keep volt-seconds balance in whole fundamental period and mitigate the current jump in phase-leg currents. In addition, the reduction effect of the DMCC and ZSCC can be achieved. To verify the analysis, both the simulation and experimental results are presented, which validates the proposed methods and show that they are beneficial for DMCC and ZSCC reduction. This paper presents a new compact three-phase cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI) topology with reduced device count and high-frequency magnetic link. The proposed topology overcomes the predominant limitation of separate dc power supplies, which CMLI always require. The high-frequency magnetic link also provides a galvanic isolation between the input and output sides of the inverter, which is essential for various grid-connected applications. The proposed topology utilizes an asymmetric inverter configuration that consists of cascaded H-bridge cells and a conventional three-phase two-level inverter. A toroidal core is employed for the high-frequency magnetic link to ensure compact size and high-power density. Compared with counterpart CMLI topologies available in literature, the proposed inverter has the advantage of utilizing the least number of power electronic components without compromising the overall performance, particularly when a high number of output voltage levels is required. In this paper, the characteristics of ripple current of a multimegawatt drive system fed by a pulse-width modulation (PWM) inverter are investigated. Based on the investigation, a novel PWM scheme is devised to reduce the switching loss of the inverter under an identical amount of torque ripple of a motor. The proposed PWM is composed of two parts. The first is minimum torque ripple PWM (MTRPWM), which is optimized in terms of the minimum torque ripple in high modulation index (MI). The second determines the minimum switching frequency while holding the average torque ripple less than the allowable value under various operating conditions. It is termed reduced switching frequency PWM (RSFPWM). Consequently, by simply changing the PWM method from conventional fixed switching frequency continuous PWM to the proposed PWM, MTRPWM and RSFPWM, simulation results show that the switching loss of the inverter driving a 3.5 MW induction motor is reduced to 51.6% while keeping the torque ripple in the allowable boundary, where MI is 1.12. This approach is applied to small-scale experimental sets consisting of an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) motor-generator set, and an induction machine MG set in an effort to verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed method. Based on these experimental results, the cost indexes of the IPMSM and the induction machine, as defined in this paper, decrease by up to 66% and 77%, respectively, when the proposed method is applied when MI is 1.12 compared with the outcome with the conventional PWM. This paper proposes an adaptive power management strategy for photovoltaic (PV) generation units in a standalone microgrid. In existing microgrid configurations, the PV units are controlled using droop control technique, which ensures load sharing among the distributed generation (DG) inverters. However, the intermittency in power generation of PV-based DG poses many challenges to the standalone operation of a microgrid, the ineffective volt-ampere (VA) utilization being one among them. This paper proposes an adaptive droop control, which enables the maximum utilization of the VA rating of the interfacing inverter in a PV/battery hybrid system. With the proposed technique, as the generation goes down, the DG inverter is controlled to support the reactive power demand of the load, thereby utilizing the rating of the inverter switches effectively. To minimize the ripple on the dc-link current and torque due to carrier signal injections, conventional saliency based self-sensing control schemes using voltage and current carrier signals for interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs) are optimized in this paper. Carrier signal oriented coordinates are introduced to model the high-frequency behavior of IPMSMs and are used for the analysis and signal processing of proposed methods. Moreover, stability issues are discussed in this paper. In this paper, it is described how the circulating current flows between inverters that have isolated dc link such as cascaded H-bridge (CHB) topology when they are operating in parallel. In this case, zero sequence circulating current, which normally flows through shared dc link, cannot flow between inverters in parallel. However, circulating current is provoked by asynchronous switching instant of devices, difference of dc-link voltages of parallel inverters, and unbalanced impedance. The circulating current should be suppressed by a sharing inductor that is inserted between inverters. Generally, all of the inverters should synthesize the same output voltage reference for load current control to minimize the size of this sharing reactor. However, this conventional method cannot guarantee diminishing circulating current in the transient state and even in the steady state. In this paper, in order to reduce sharing reactance, after deriving circulating current model from general case of n-parallel operation, circulating current control method is devised based on the model. This proposed algorithm is applied to active front end five-level-CHB inverter system for medium voltage drive. This paper presents an extended electromotive-force-based discrete-time sliding-mode observer (DSMO) for rotor position/speed sensorless control of interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs). Without using voltage sensors to measure IPMSM terminal voltages, the reference voltages generated by the vector control system are used as inputs for the DSMO. However, due to the inverter dead-time effect, the mismatch between the reference voltages and actual terminal voltages will degrade the performance of DSMO. In this paper, the periodically oscillating rotor position estimation error caused by the dead-time is first analyzed. Then, a dead-time compensation scheme is proposed to mitigate this position estimation error. This paper introduces a detailed nonlinearity characterization technique for insulated-gate bipolar transistor inverters in a drive system which is able to measure device nonlinearities. Methods are derived from measurements of the voltage on the inverter phases. These measurements are obtained while applying a set of direct currents to an electrical machine. These methods are then applied to tests using alternating current. The study of inverter nonlinearities is useful in order to conduct condition monitoring. These methods fulfill the need to characterize each device in an inverter. In addition to characterizing every device using either ac or dc current, the method is resistant to noise; for these reasons, the method is applicable in the field. The incremental efficiency improvements achieved with induction motors have been mostly accomplished by adding material to the designs of the prior efficiency level. In order to achieve levels beyond NEMA Premium (or beyond IE3), it has been recognized that a different technology must be employed. The working groups for International Electrotechnical Committee efficiency levels have stated that inverter-fed permanent-magnet motors are the likely technology to reach IE4 levels. Other motor technologies (such as synchronous reluctance) which also require inverters for operation have also been proposed for higher motor efficiency. This paper will discuss a technology which can be utilized without requiring an inverter and that can achieve beyond-IE4 levels of efficiency while using less active material in the motor. This paper proposes a new inverter topology based on the active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter with capability to integrate one energy storage system (ESS) per inverter leg with an independent state of charge control, so that each inverter leg has two dc ports and one ac port. The primary dc port is common to all inverter legs and it is connected to the main power source. The secondary dc port is suitable for ESS connection because of its two-quadrant operation, with bidirectional current capability, so that the ESS can be charged and discharged with regulated current. Integration of a secondary dc port with independent control also allows the use of different ESS technologies for each inverter leg to compose a hybrid ESS. Redundant switching states of the proposed structure are used to balance the energy exchanged between the secondary dc port and the dc bus capacitors. Theoretical propositions were experimentally validated through a 1-kW single-phase inverter with a secondary dc port connected to a 230-V ESS and ac port connected to an LC filter feeding a linear load. A gate driving for power devices is a key technology to further improve switching characteristics. With the help of digital gate driver IC, the switching behavior of power devices can be enhanced even under high-speed switching. In this paper, an evaluation platform for determining the optimal switching pattern of an active gate drive control is proposed for an inverter circuit. A high speed optimization system is built up to search for an advantageous switching pattern that reduces total switching loss of two power devices in an inverter circuit and constrains surge voltage simultaneously. The proposed online optimization demonstrates its feasibility for the full-bridge inverter circuit, which is rated at 500 V with digital active gate drive control. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization system is able to obtain optimal switching pattern from $64^{60}$ possible combinations of switching patterns within 15 min, which is 6 times faster than the previous study. Optimizations can also conducted under different load current conditions. Eventually, the obtained optimal pattern yields up to 42% reduction in the total switching loss when it constrains surge voltage to minimum compared with the conventional driving pattern. High slew rate of the line voltage $(\boldsymbol {dv}/\boldsymbol {dt})$ has been a concern for power inverters based on the emerging wide bandgap switching devices, such as silicon carbide (SiC) mosfets. Particularly, for SiC-based power inverters feeding electric machines interconnected with long cables, there could be more severe insulation stress on the stator windings in electric machines, due to the higher dv/dt output from the SiC inverters. Compared to the conventional lower voltage electric transportation applications (e.g., 270 V dc), higher dc bus voltage of 500–600 V can dramatically reduce cable weight and systematic copper losses, hence improve the power density and efficiency of power converters. However, high dc bus voltage further increases the $\boldsymbol {dv}/\boldsymbol {dt}$ level in the converter ac line voltages. Driven by the necessity of developing SiC inverters with 500 V dc bus in electric transportation applications while attenuating the $\boldsymbol {dv}/\boldsymbol {dt}$ stress to a low level, this paper presents a multi-domain design approach for dv/dt filters that comprehensively considers the constraints in electrical, magnetic, and thermal domains. Future applications of wireless power transfer will include powering various devices in a room, charging electric vehicles in a parking area, charging moving robots, and so on. Therefore, practical wireless power transfer must be able to support complicated configurations, for example, combination of multireceiver and repeaters. Many past works have discussed methods for improving efficiency and, more recently, extended the methods to multireceiver systems. However, controllable power division among receivers is also an important feature as receivers nearer to the transmitter tend to absorb more power compared to further ones. In this paper, a new impedance matching and power division method utilizing impedance inverters only at the receiver sides is proposed. Transformerless photovoltaic (PV) inverters are going to be more widely adopted in order to achieve high efficiency, as the penetration level of PV systems is continuously booming. However, problems may arise in highly PV-integrated distribution systems. For example, a sudden stoppage of all PV systems due to anti-islanding protection may contribute to grid disturbances. Thus, standards featuring with ancillary services for the next-generation PV systems are under a revision in some countries. The future PV systems have to provide a full range of services as what the conventional power plants do, e.g., low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) under grid faults and grid support service. In order to map future challenges, the LVRT capability of three mainstream single-phase transformerless PV inverters under grid faults is explored in this paper. Control strategies with reactive power injection are also discussed. The selected inverters are the full-bridge (FB) inverter with bipolar modulation, the FB inverter with dc bypass, and the Highly Efficient and Reliable Inverter Concept (HERIC). A 1-kW single-phase grid-connected PV system is analyzed to verify the discussions. The tests confirmed that, although the HERIC inverter is the best candidate in terms of efficiency, it is not very particularly feasible in case of a voltage sag. The other two topologies are capable of providing reactive current during LVRT. A benchmarking of those inverters is also provided in this paper, which offers the possibility to select appropriate devices and to further optimize the transformerless system. A method for the seamless transition of three-phase inverters switched between grid-tied and stand-alone modes of operation is presented in this paper. In this method, only the inverter current and voltage sensors are utilized, and no control over the grid-side static transfer switch is needed. The presented method contains two strategies for grid-tied-to-stand-alone and stand-alone-to-grid-tied transitions. In the stand-alone-to-grid-tied transition strategy, a novel algorithm is presented for estimating the grid angle nearly instantaneously, which allows the three-phase inverter to respond very quickly if the grid and point-of-common-coupling voltages are out of phase. This fast response allows the inverter to effectively eliminate the transient overcurrent that would normally occur if it was connected to the grid without first being synchronized. The fast response also allows the inverter to return to normal operation very quickly after such an event. The strategy for the seamless transition from grid-tied to stand-alone mode is also presented. These strategies have been verified through experiments, and the results are presented in this paper. This paper presents the study of a series-resonant inverter for the supply of a dielectric barrier discharge excimer lamp. Causal analysis, based on the fundamental properties of the load, is used to detail the reasoning which has led to this topology. In order to effectively control the lamp power, the operating mode of this converter combines discontinuous current mode and soft commutation (zero-current switching), obtaining low electromagnetic emissions and reduced switching losses as well. The model of the lamp is briefly presented, and it allows a simple state plane analysis to calculate all the electric variables involved in the converter and, consequently, to select the components of the supply. The mathematical relationships obtained from this process, for injected power control by means of the available degrees of freedom, are validated with simulations and experimental results. This paper introduces a transformer inrush current reduction technique for the conventional double-conversion uninterruptible power supply (UPS) feeding multiple loads and their transformers. As these loads are engaged or disengaged, their transformers are also connected or disconnected from the power lines. To avoid the inrush current, a closed-loop flux linkage control and a phase winding energizing sequence control for the incoming transformer are proposed to maintain the flux of transformers which are already engaged and of the transformer which is switched on. The proposed method can utilize the existing voltage and current sensor feedback of the UPS, and it can be seamlessly integrated with the voltage and current control. In this paper, a multiport high-frequency ac link inverter is proposed as the power electronic interface between the photovoltaic (PV) modules, battery energy storage system, and three-phase ac load. In this inverter, a single-stage power conversion unit fulfills all the system requirements, i.e., inverting dc voltage to proper ac, stepping up or down the voltage, generating low harmonic ac current at the output, and input/output isolation. The ac link is formed by a parallel ac inductor/capacitor (LC) pair having low reactive ratings. A single-input/single-output partial resonant inverter has already been proposed by the present authors. This paper verifies the possibility of extending this topology to multiport partial resonant converters. The proposed converter is believed to overcome most of the shortcomings associated with the currently available multiport PV inverters. It is a single-stage ac link power conversion system with zero voltage turn on and soft turn off of the switches, which has very small switching losses, compact size, and light weight. The proposed converter does not contain any electrolytic capacitors at the link, which increases the reliability of this converter to a great extent. In the proposed inverter, PV side and ac side are isolated; however, if galvanic isolation is required, a single-phase high-frequency transformer can be added to the link. This converter can both step up or down the voltage, regardless of the presence of a transformer. Although this configuration is extendable to the grid-connected applications, in this paper, only the stand-alone application is considered. Harmonic instability is threatening the operation of renewable energy based power plants where multiple grid connected voltage source inverters (VSIs) are connected in parallel. To analyze and improve the stability of the grid-connected VSIs, the real part of the output admittance of the VSIs is first investigated in this paper. It has been shown that the negative real part of the output admittance will make the system unstable under certain grid condition. Based on the stability analysis, this paper proposes a method to cancel the negative real parts by using VSIs with different LCL filters, sampling frequencies, and control strategies. The proposed method does not require the VSIs to have any active damping function. Three specific cases are studied where the LCL parameters, sampling frequencies, and current control strategies of the VSIs are different. The performance of a novel three-phase four-leg fault-tolerant T-type inverter topology is introduced in this paper. This inverter topology provides a fault-tolerant solution to any open-circuit and certain short-circuit switching faults in the power devices. During any of the fault-tolerant operation modes for these device faults, there is no derating required in the inverter output voltage or output power. In addition, overload capability is increased in this new T-type inverter compared to that in the conventional three-level T-type inverter. Such increase in inverter overload capability is due to the utilization of the redundant leg for overload current sharing with other main phase legs under healthy condition. Moreover, if the redundant phase leg is composed of silicon carbide metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors, quasi-zero-voltage switching, and zero-current switching of the silicon insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) in the conventional main phase legs can be achieved at certain switching states, which can significantly relieve the thermal stress on the outer IGBTs and improve the whole inverter efficiency. This paper identifies possible topological reconfigurability of a T-type inverter for direct torque controlled (DTC) induction motor drives when an open-switch fault occurs. In open-switch fault, inverter current path is different than normal path. This causes undesirable inverter switching states. Since DTC is based on a voltage vector selection criterion, open-switch fault causes ambiguous torque control. Analysis of DTC drive under two different inverter open-switch fault conditions viz. half-bridge and neutral-point switch fault are presented. Three-phase voltage-source inverters typically feature a significant amount of dc energy storage to maintain a stiff dc bus. In these cases, the dc-link capacitor is sized to store enough energy to maintain several tens of cycles of ac output at the rated power. In this paper, we propose to reduce the size of the dc-link capacitor dramatically to store enough energy to provide just one high-frequency switching cycle of the ac output power. The dc bus is no longer stiff, and hence, classical sinusoidal pulse-width modulation cannot be used. However, the stored energy modulation (SEM) proposed herein synthesizes high-quality sinusoidal output voltage waveforms, even with such tiny dc-link capacitors. In SEM, the switching intervals of the interconnecting switches are carefully determined nonlinear functions of various operating parameters such as reactive component sizing, switching frequency, load levels, etc. This paper presents the analytical and detailed design development of the SEM approach along with circuit simulation, experimental results, and comparative evaluation of a dc-to-three-phase system example.
