This paper introduces a compensation strategy to deal with both current and voltage measurement errors in the three-phase pulsewidth modulated rectifier system. The dc offset and scaling errors in the voltage and current measurements cause the injection of undesired dc and unbalanced currents into the three-phase input current and subsequently lead to voltage ripple at the dc output voltage. This paper proposes a compensation scheme for current measurement error where the dc offset and scaling errors in the current measurement are estimated from the characteristic of the dc output voltage ripple combining with simple band-pass and low-pass filters. Meanwhile, an advanced current controller designed with a proportional integral plus two resonant controllers tuned at the fundamental grid frequency $({{\omega _s}})$ and $2{\omega _s}$ in the synchronous (d–q) reference frame is suggested to reject the impact of the dc offset and scaling errors in the voltage measurement. The proposed compensation method is developed without the need of extra hardware circuit, sensor, or precise information of system parameters so that it can be considered as more cost-effective and robust solution. Electric grid codes are expected to change in near future to accommodate an increased number of distributed generation units in the distribution power system without impairing its power quality. It is desired that the generators remain connected during voltage sags and provide ancillary services, such as voltage and reactive power control, ensuring the operational stability of the power system. This paper explores how the existing strategies for active and reactive power injection impact the operation of grid-tied inverters in terms of required power, current flowing, and reduction of active power delivery during the voltage sags. Such inputs are relevant to properly size converters for operation under fault events. In addition, this paper contributes to devise: 1) constant peak current control, 2) constant active current control, and 3) constant average active power control strategies for three-phase four-wire grid-tied inverters considering the natural (abc) reference frame. The design and implementation of the investigated power injection strategies are discussed, and their effectiveness and technical viability are analyzed through dynamic computational simulations under symmetrical/asymmetrical voltage sags, and variation of the short-circuit ratio. Low-voltage dc distribution systems have gained significant attention over the last years, since they provide simpler and more efficient integration of distributed generators and storage devices, establishing a pathway to net zero energy buildings. In low-power units, transformerless utility interface is preferred to reduce footprint and losses. However, the lack of galvanic isolation introduces a common-mode (CM) path between the dc distribution bus and the utility service grounding, leading to the presence of high CM voltages at the dc bus feeders. The attenuation of the CM voltage reduces the touch voltage amplitude and leakage current, contributing to a safer environment. In this paper, a feed-forward active compensation of the CM voltage is proposed. It relies on utility voltage parameters, estimated by a phase locked loop, to generate a counter CM voltage; hence, it does not require previous knowledge of the system CM path model or the addition of voltage sensors. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been a promising candidate in high voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission systems. Due to the features of simple structure, low cost, and low power losses, half-bridge (HB) is usually adopted as the submodule circuit in the traditional MMC. However, an HB submodule circuit-based MMC does not have the capability of blocking dc short-circuit fault, which obstructs the development of low-cost HVdc systems with overhead lines. In order to solve this problem, an MMC with active clamped T-type submodule (ACTSM) to own dc fault blocking capability is proposed in this paper. Compared with other submodule circuits, the proposed ACTSM has many features, such as symmetrical blocking capability, low power losses, low voltage stress, and low amount of independent drive signals. The topology, operation principle, dc fault blocking capability, and distribution of power losses of the ACTSM are presented in this paper. This paper studies the application of distributed and centralized solutions for voltage control in low voltage (LV) grids with high photovoltaic (PV) penetration. In traditional LV grids, the coordination of distributed PV converters and a centralized device would require massive investments in new communication and control infrastructures. The alternative of exploiting distributed PV converters for voltage control is discussed, showing that it can help to stabilize the voltage in the grid connection points also without coordination between them and/or with a centralized unit. The goal of this paper is to investigate how the setup of the voltage controllers inside PV inverters affects the operation of these controllers taking into account the limits for reactive power injection. In addition, the interaction of distributed PV converters with centralized devices (static var compensators and on load tap changers) is analyzed to assess whether additional benefits may come in these cases. Electric vehicles (EVs) are recently gaining traction in the power sector due to various challenges and opportunities they provide to utility operators. For electric utilities that incorporate demand side management (DSM) programs, EVs could become either a burden or an advantage depending on their charging control strategy and the signaling of the DSM program. This paper proposes a decentralized fuzzy-based controller to successfully integrate and coordinate the charging of EVs that ensures fair charging of EVs at different point of connections (POCs) in the distribution grid where voltage conditions might not be the same. The controller operates in an autonomous mode that reduces the monetary cost of the communication overhead and preserves bandwidth. The proposed controller takes into consideration the owner requirements in terms of energy needed and time to charge, the voltage at the POC with the grid, and the pricing signal coming from the utility. The controller is tested under different DSM programs that exist in the literature. This paper also proposes a new DSM program that is capable of benefiting from EVs as prosumers that can provide grid services. The controller's performance was validated through MATLAB simulations that showed the controller's ability to successfully coordinate the charging of EVs in a fair manner and achieve flat system peaks without any rebound effect. Grid-interactive inverters allow distributed generation units to provide various ancillary services in microgrids. As the linear modulation region of inverters is restricted by the dc-bus voltage, providing ancillary services may drive the fundamental positive-sequence inverter voltage to the overmodulation region. Therefore, to operate in the linear modulation region the maximum active- and reactive-power of the inverter may have to be reduced unless pulsewidth modulation (PWM) references are adjusted. In this paper, an atypical PWM method is proposed for maximizing dc-bus utilization of grid-interactive two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSI) providing ancillary services. Two important ancillary services, i.e., negative-sequence compensation and harmonic compensation are considered in this paper. The proposed method increases the maximum active- and reactive-power that a 2L-VSI can deliver when providing ancillary services by injecting a common-mode component in the references computed based on instantaneous reference magnitudes. This paper analyzes the configuration, design, and operation of multi-MW grid connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with practical test cases provided by a 10-MW field development. In order to improve the capacity factor, the PV system operates at its maximum power point during periods of lower irradiance, and the power output is limited to a rated value at high irradiance. The proposed configuration also incorporates a utility scale battery energy storage system (BESS) connected to the grid through an independent inverter and benefits of the experience gained with a 1-MW 2-MWh BESS large demonstrator. The BESS power smoothing and frequency regulation capabilities are illustrated though combined theoretical and experimental studies. The behavior of the grid connected PV and BESS combined system is studied using a modified IEEE 14 bus test system implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC. A multifunctional grid-connected inverter (MFGCI) has been a promising solution to mitigate power quality problems in distributed generation system and microgrid applications. However, the capability of a conventional MFGCI is limited when compensating a voltage-based power quality problem. In this paper, a new configuration of MFGCI is proposed to improve both voltage-based and current-based power quality issues and is named shunt-series-switched MFGCI (SSS-MFGCI). The SSS-MFGCI can be connected in series or parallel to the grid by implementing bidirectional switches to provide different modes of operation depending on various grid disturbances. The required compensating current and voltage are analytically derived considering the grid and load conditions for voltage regulation. This paper also presents the compensation strategies, control scheme, and transition scheme between different modes of the proposed SSS-MFGCI. This paper proposes a zero-voltage ride-through (ZVRT) method and an LCL filter design method to meet the fault ride-through (FRT) requirements for a single-phase grid-connected inverter with a minimized LCL filter. A high inverter output current overshoot occurs at a grid voltage sag and a grid voltage recovery, when a low-inductance LCL filter design is employed in order to minimize the filter volume. In order to suppress the current overshoot, a high-speed gate-block operation and the design method of the minimized LCL filter are proposed. In particular, the filter design considers the delay time in the gate-block operation in order to clarify the reduction limitation of the inductance in the LCL filter. As a result, the maximum inverter output current overshoot is suppressed to 146% by the high-speed gate-block operation and the designed LCL filter, where the impedances of an interconnected inductor and a filter inductor are 1.0% and 0.78% of the inverter normalized impedance, respectively. Dual-comparison one-cycle control for the bidirectional power flow in single-phase grid-connected converters is proposed in this paper. Advantages of dual-comparison one-cycle control when compared to conventional one-cycle control is that it does not give any steady-state dc offset, no light-load instability, and implements unipolar pulsewidth modulation without having to sense the grid voltage. Addition of a fictitious current term, which is generated from the gating signal of one of the active devices, using a bandpass filter, enables the bidirectional power flow. The quality factor of the bandpass filter is shown to impact the total harmonic distortion in current, fundamental displacement angle, and steady-state dc offset. The optimal value of a quality factor, obtained with aid of simulations, gives a superior performance. The current drawn or injected into the grid is seen to lag the grid voltage. The reason for a nonunity displacement power factor is analyzed and a compensation to achieve a unity displacement power factor is also proposed in this paper. Stand-alone operation of distributed generations (DGs) under an islanded mode is achieved by appropriate switching of controllers from grid-parallel to stand-alone mode. Conversely, during grid restoration, reverse switching operation is employed. These operations cause voltage quality issues; among these issues, voltage dips and swells are two crucial events that are encountered during and subsequent to islanding. This paper characterizes the voltage dips and/or swells caused by the islanding of DG and its subsequent pre- and post-islanding events. Pre-islanding events encompass the fault-initiated islanding scenarios, whereas postislanding events are associated with transitional state, island stabilization, and grid-reconnection states. Considering pre- and post-islanding scenarios, this paper classifies and characterizes the voltage dips and swells using an algorithm incorporating three-phase voltage ellipse and three-dimensional (3-D) polarization ellipse parameters. Three-phase voltage ellipse parameters, namely, major axis, minor axis, and inclination angle of an ellipse, are exploited for characterization and classification of voltage dips/swells based on their affected phases, whereas 3-D polarization ellipse parameters are employed for classifying seven dip types, namely, A, B, D, F, E, C, and G. Islanding and its subsequent scenarios are simulated using a test distribution network of Australia embedded with DG, and the voltage dips and swells are characterized using the proposed algorithm. This paper presents a novel digital control strategy for the islanding mode operation of a power electronics-based energy management system (EMS). Thanks to the use of a high-performance repetitive controller combined with active damping, the EMS is capable of supplying a high-quality sinusoidal voltage to critical loads when the ac grid is not available. The proposed control scheme is analyzed and implemented in a field-programmable gate array-based control platform; it achieves a very low output voltage total harmonic distortion and holds a large stability margin for a wide range of load conditions. Analysis and simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed controller versus open-loop control. A programmable electronic load (PEL) solution is usually needed for comprehensive testing of power supplies. In this paper, a novel PEL based on a hybrid five-level voltage source inverter (VSI) is introduced to emulate a variety of static load behaviors, such as R, L, C loads, high-frequency harmonic loads, and unbalanced loads. Dynamic load behavior, for example, modulation loads, can also be achieved in this paper. A dedicated control structure is proposed for the emulation of different load behaviors and the detailed compensator design is presented to evaluate the system dynamic performance. The proposed PEL system has isolated active dc links to support multilevel converter topology, and it can either dump the energy to a passive load or recycle the energy back to the utility grid through another VSI. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of proposed control methods in terms of successfully achieving a variety of load profile functions. This paper presents theoretical and experimental discussions on a practical speed-sensorless start-up method for an induction motor driven by a modular multilevel cascade inverter based on double-star chopper cells (MMCI-DSCC) from standstill to middle speed. This motor drive is suitable, particularly for a large-capacity fan- or blower-like load. The load torque is proportional to a square of the motor mechanical speed. The start-up method is characterized by combining capacitor-voltage control with motor-speed control. The motor-speed control with the minimal stator current plays a crucial role in eliminating a speed sensor from the drive system and in reducing an ac-voltage fluctuation occurring across each dc capacitor. Experimental results obtained from the 400-V 15-kW downscaled system with no speed sensor verify that the motor-speed control proposed for the DSCC-based drive system can enhance the start-up torque by a factor of three under the same ac-voltage fluctuation. This paper provides an intensive discussion on analysis, simulation, and experiment of a back-to-back (BTB) systemunifying two modular multilevel cascade converters based on double-star chopper cells (MMCCs-DSCCs). Each of the twoDSCCs connected back-to-back consists of multiple cascaded chopper cells and a center-tapped inductor per leg. Lowvoltage steps bring significant reductions in harmonic voltage and current to the BTB system. Neither dc-link capacitornor voltage sensor is required for regulating the dc-link voltage and controlling the dc-link current. A three-phase200-V, 10-kW, 50-Hz downscaled BTB system with phase-shifted PWM is designed, constructed, and tested to verify itsoperating principles and performance. This paper proposes a single-stage three-phase-to-single-phase current-fed high step-up ac–dc matrix converter. The proposed converter inserts a boost-type matrix converter, which is formed by three boost inductors and six bidirectional switches, between a three-phase ac source and a Cockcroft–Walton voltage multiplier (CWVM). By using this topology associated with power factor correction technique, the proposed converter not only achieves almost unity power factor and sinusoidal input currents with low distortion but also obtains high voltage gain at the output end. Moreover, the matrix converter generates an adjustable-frequency and adjustable-amplitude current, which injects into the CWVM to regulate the dc output voltage and smooth its ripple. With this flexible injection current, the performance of the proposed converter is superior to the conventional CWVM, which is usually energized by a single-phase ac source. This paper presents a modular push–pull PWM converter (MPC) for a battery energy storage system, which is intended for grid connections to medium- or high-voltage power systems. The converter per phase consists of a center-tapped transformer and two arms based on a cascade connection of multiple bidirectional PWM chopper-cells with floating dc capacitors. This paper discusses the operating performance and control method of the MPC, focusing on voltage balancing of all the floating dc capacitors. Moreover, a comparison is made between the MPC and a modular multilevel converter (MMC), under an assumption that both are used as the same battery energy storage system. The validity of the operating performance and control method is confirmed by both computer simulation using the “PSCAD/EMTDC” software package and experiment using a three-phase, 200-V, 5-kW downscaled model. The introduction of communication systems to power system controllers has brought in another layer of complexity in their design and operation. In this paper, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle charging facility is studied. A linearized model of the facility is built, including both the dc/dc and dc/ac converters of the distributed energy resources. In addition, a control strategy that includes both local and networked loops is proposed to monitor and control the dc bus voltage of a local energy storage unit. This dc bus voltage is crucial to the self-sustaining capabilities of the system. A review of challenges and opportunities in networked control systems is presented, and the impacts of communication factors to the charging facility stability are analyzed. Finally, a real-time simulation platform which combines both electrical and communication networks is presented to validate the small-signal model, control strategy, and stability analysis including the communication effects. In this paper, a control strategy for the parallel operation of three-phase inverters in a modular online uninterruptable power supply (UPS) system is proposed. The UPS system is composed of a number of dc/acs with LC filter connected to the same ac critical bus and an ac/dc that forms the dc bus. The proposed control includes two layers: 1) individual layer and 2) recovery layer. In individual layer, virtual impedance concept is employed in order to achieve active power sharing while individual reactive power is calculated to modify output voltage phases to achieve reactive power sharing among different modules. Recovery layer is mainly responsible for guaranteeing synchronization capability with the utility and voltage recovery. With the proposed control, improved voltage-transient performance can be achieved and also dc/ac modules can be plugged in and out flexibly while controlling the ac critical bus voltage, thus allowing plug’n’play or hot-swap capability. Managing power delivery from distributed generation systems is challenging when the grid voltages are unbalanced, since the negative sequence voltage causes power oscillations at twice the fundamental grid frequency. Current regulation using sequence components can be used to manage these real and reactive power oscillations, and thus help mitigate the unbalanced network voltages. This paper presents a consolidated control scheme using double sequence frame current regulators that can readily adjust between eliminating real or reactive power oscillations created by unbalanced grid voltages, or alternatively can simply balance the three-phase currents. The mitigation influence of these alternative control strategies on unbalanced grid voltages is then experimentally examined for a distribution feeder with a resistive and/or reactive series impedance. This paper presents a Scott-transformer-based power factor correction (PFC) rectifier for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter-fed induction motor drive (IMD) for enhanced power quality at ac mains. Here, the Scott-transformer-based PFC rectifier is digitally controlled by a current feedforward control. The torque component of the stator current is added to the output of the dc-bus voltage proportional plus integral (PI) controller as a feedforward term, which enhances the dynamic performance of the dc-bus voltage regulation. The three-level NPC inverter is controlled by a space vector-modulated (SVM) indirect vector control scheme. The performance of the proposed dc-bus voltage loop with feedforward control is compared with the conventional one and found to offer faster response with less overshoot and undershoot. The proposed IMD system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and the same is validated experimentally. Constant-volts-per-hertz induction motor drives and vector-controlled induction motor drives utilize pulsewidth modulation (PWM) to control the voltage applied on the motor. The method of PWM influences the pulsations in the torque developed by the motor. A space-vector-based approach to PWM facilitates special switching sequences involving the division of active state time. This paper proposes a space-vector-based hybrid PWM technique, which is a combination of the conventional and special switching sequences. The proposed hybrid PWM technique results in a lower peak-to-peak torque ripple than conventional space vector PWM (CSVPWM) at high speeds of an induction motor drive. Furthermore, the magnitude of the dominant torque harmonic due to the proposed hybrid PWM is significantly lower than that due to CSVPWM at high speeds of the drive. In this paper, a new technique to equalize light-emitting diode (LED) currents in multiarray LED lamps is proposed. The current through the LEDs is controlled by changing the inductance of a variable inductor. The proposed technique can be employed to control the current through each LED branch independently. The operation principle of this technique and a design example of the proposed system are presented in detail in this paper. As an example, a forward converter has been selected to supply the LED branches, which can be designed to operate with one or several outputs. The component values of the converter as well as the LED current control circuit are also calculated as a design example. A prototype of the circuit has been implemented. The experimental results obtained at the laboratory are satisfactory and in accordance to the proposed design methodology. This paper presents a novel finite-control-set model predictive control (FS-MPC) approach for grid-connected converters. The control performance of such converters may get largely affected by variations in the supply impedance, especially for systems with low short-circuit ratio values. A novel idea for estimating the supply impedance variation, and hence the grid voltage, using an algorithm embedded in the MPC is presented in this paper. The estimation approach is based on the difference in grid voltage magnitudes at two consecutive sampling instants, calculated on the basis of supply currents and converter voltages directly within the MPC algorithm, achieving a fast estimation and integration between the controller and the impedance estimator. This paper provides experimental verification of a modular multilevel cascade converter based on triple-star bridge cells (MMCC-TSBC) for a low-speed, high-torque motor drive. The TSBC is one of direct ac-to-ac power converters capable of achieving bidirectional power flow and drawing/feeding three-phase sinusoidal input (supply-side) and output (motor-side) currents with any power factor at both sides. This paper designs, constructs, and tests a downscaled drive system combining a 400-V, 15-kW, phase-shifted-carrier PWM TSBC equipped with four bridge cells per cluster and a 320-V, 38-Hz, 6-pole, 15-kW induction motor loaded at the rated torque. Experimental waveforms obtained from the downscaled drive system verify stable operation across a broad range from a standstill to the rated speed, showing satisfactory start-up performance. This paper proposes a comprehensive evaluation of stacked revenue generated from grid-connected energy storage systems (ESSs). The stacked revenue from an ESS cannot be calculated by merely aggregating the benefits from various applications (e.g., energy arbitrage, frequency regulation, and outage mitigation) as the ESS may not be available for all types of applications during the same time intervals. This is because a quantity committed to one market may not be committed to another. In this paper, different types of applications for grid-connected ESSs are identified, and a model incorporating component reliability, power system operation constraints, and storage system operation constraints is developed to evaluate the composite revenue generated from these applications. In this model, the types of applications of ESSs are prioritized according to their intended contributions and system operating conditions. Sequential Monte Carlo simulation is used for evaluating the reliability improvement and a quadratically constrained linear programing model is built for estimating the maximum revenue from arbitrage and regulation markets. This paper presents a technique based on the novel bat algorithm (NBA) for the design of the parameters of power system stabilizers and the generalized Unified power flow controller-power oscillation damping in a multimachine power system. The objective is to ensure minimal damping rates to low-frequency electromechanical oscillation modes. Simulations were carried out on the New England system to compare the performance of the NBA with three other techniques: particle swarm optimization, bacterial foraging optimization oriented by particle swarm optimization, and the bat algorithm. For the cases analyzed in this paper, the NBA produced results superior to other techniques. Moreover, the proposed methodology was able to obtain solutions with high damping levels, which showed to be robust when a wide range of loading conditions of the power system were considered. This paper puts into perspective the state-of-the art knowledge on bearing currents and diagnosis tools, which rely on shaft voltages and bearing currents phenomena. Today, shaft signals measurements are progressively included in predictive health monitoring of large turbo and hydro generators. In addition, bearing fault diagnosis through shaft signals have recently gained some attention to improve reliability and estimation of the remaining useful life in electrical drives. The main objective of this paper is to provide diagnosticians with a broad overview of the current trends in fault diagnosis through shaft signals. Therefore, the study presents a critical review of the measurements methods, advantages, and disadvantages of fault diagnosis methods, and suggests future possible enhancements for bearing health monitoring through shaft signals. This paper presents a single-stage nonisolated switched capacitor ac–dc converter for power-factor correction (PFC). This converter features reduced passive components, single switch, transformerless high voltage gain, and improves the power factor, reduces total harmonic distortion, and voltage stress across the switch. In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive backstepping controller is designed to control the common dc-bus voltage for different components in a dc microgrid under various operating conditions. The dc microgrid in this paper comprises a solar photovoltaic (PV) unit, a battery energy storage system (BESS), a backup diesel generator, and loads (both critical and noncritical). The controllers are designed for all components except loads where the main control objective for all controllers is to maintain a constant voltage at the dc-bus where all components are connected. This paper considers solar PV systems as the renewable energy source, whereas a diesel generator equipped with a rectifier is used as a backup supply to maintain the continuity of power supply in the case of emergency situations. The proposed controller is designed recursively based on the Lyapunov control theory, where all parameters within the model of different components are considered unknown. Adaptation laws are used to estimate these unknown parameters while the stability of the dc microgrid, with these adaptation laws, is ensured through the formulation of suitable control Lyapunov functions (CLFs) at different stages of the design process. The negative definiteness or semidefiniteness of these CLFs guarantees the stability of the dc microgrid. Finally, the performance of the proposed controllers is verified using both simulations and experiments on a test dc microgrid under different operating conditions. Replacing the batteries of wearable medical devices is an inconvenience to the user. Wireless power transfer (WPT) could be a solution for this problem. However, the structure should be compact to satisfy the wearable device requirements and the power efficiency should be as high as possible for prolonging the user experience. Besides, as algorithms embedded in these devices become more complex, the device power consumption also increases. Fulfilling these specifications in a compact structure with better efficiency is the aim of this research paper. This paper proposes a power processing module for WPT applications. This module is embedded within the WPT path to convert receiving end ac power to dc power, and to simultaneously provide multiple dc–dc power conversion for wearable medical devices. The ac–dc circuit is specifically designed using a compact topology to convert wireless ac power to stable dc power. The dc power is further regulated by different mode controls either to perform battery charging or to provide independent voltage supplies to dc loads. Widespread deployment of voltage source inverter units in high penetration applications such as distributed generation and stand-alone renewable energy conditioning imposes stringent demands on reliability and output voltage regulation. Reported literature provides numerous solutions for output voltage regulation, which includes twin aspects of command tracking and output impedance control. Most of these methods rely on the measurement of at least two separate variables per phase, which compromises overall reliability. This paper focuses on a dual-loop voltage regulation approach requiring only output voltage measurement. The outer loop of a control scheme is used to assure prompt tracking of the inverter output voltage, whereas the inner derivative feedback loop improves system stability by damping the output filter resonance. Digital realization of this derivative term is generally a challenge with many methods currently developed for resolving it. These methods are, however, still facing drawbacks, which have inclusively been explained in this paper. Subsequently, a new digital derivative is proposed whose performance is predicted analytically and then validated through experimental results with a 7.5-kVA inverter prototype. This paper proposes a decentralized control scheme for controlling active and reactive power of grid-tied ac-stacked photovoltaic (PV) inverter architecture using single member phase compensation. Reactive power control is required for the next generation of grid-tied smart PV inverter systems in power networks with high PV penetration. The decentralized control scheme proposed in this paper allows for a fully distributed architecture, both in terms of active and reactive power control and physical implementation of a PV system. This will result in higher reliability and potentially lower cost with minimum communications requirements. A decentralized controller enables higher switching frequencies that can shrink passive components. Therefore, string voltage variations due to voltage drop across passive components will be negligible and the system will be controlled with minimum communications requirement. The relative gain array approach has been used to study the feasibility of the decentralized control scheme. Detailed modeling and analysis are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach and the effect of this approach on control implementation. Finally, effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach is verified using mathematical modeling, simulation, and a lab-scale experimental setup in different operation conditions. Electric vehicles (EVs) and their application raise new questions and demands. Accordingly, the charging process of EVs is a novelty in everyday life when using such vehicles. This paper presents results of user charging behavior within a field test. In the field test, 500 people with above average yearly mileage took part in integrating the vehicles into their everyday lives. For the results of this paper, the charging behavior of 200 test people is taken into account. The differences in user behavior between battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and extended range electric vehicles (EREVs) are discussed. The results indicate that there are various opportunities for grid services based on EVs, as the vehicles are connected or parked close to a charging station the majority of the time. This paper proposes a repetitive learning-based phase locked loop (RLPLL) to improve power quality of the grid-connected dc microgrids under distorted grid voltage in a weak grid. The harmonic component present in grid current in a high impedance network amplifies the distortion in voltage, which often leads to instability. Since the behavior of the conventional synchronous reference frame PLL (SRF-PLL) varies, owing to the proportional-integral gains constrained to harmonic rejection bandwidth ultimately leading to a sluggish response. However, RLPLL accommodates this limitation with a comparable dynamic performance and enhanced harmonic attenuation properties. This has been achieved by using a Lyapunov-based approach for harmonic estimation, which facilitates the periodicity and boundedness of the harmonic component to obtain an adaptive learning-based update. To deal with the computational burden, this paper also provides a low-computing alternative model of the proposed strategy. The dynamic response of RLPLL along with a comparative analysis with SRF-PLL is governed by many events directly affecting the dc voltage, which is critical for the operation of dc microgrids. This paper analyzes the influence of frequency and voltage variation over the commutation of thyristors in high-power cycloconverters. The analysis demonstrates that frequency and voltage variations can cause commutation failures generating significant damages in cycloconverters. In addition, the paper proposes a method based on the energy required to commutate thyristors to determine the maximum frequency and voltage variations that will not affect commutation between thyristors, information that can be later used for the correct setting of protection relays. The analysis is complemented with simulated results using data obtained from high-power thyristors used in commercially available cycloconverters. The aim of this study is to design and implement an accurate virtual model of a basic feeder protection relay. This paper focuses on certain sets of ANSI functions and COMTRADE (Std C37.111) to interact with an online simulation subjects to different fault scenarios. The proposed methodology includes robust synchronization between power system simulations and the response of the virtual relay. The results validation integrates a distribution system simulation software running with remote control for time-based simulation, then it reproduces voltage and current signals with the virtual relay operation. The performance is assessed in three cases of study comparing real protection equipment and the operation of the virtual relay at the same fault scenarios. In this paper, verification of operation and control of a vertical stabilization (VS) converter for a superconducting coil by using a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) is described. The VS converter supplies voltage (±1000 V) and current (±22.5 kA) to the superconducting coil for plasma current VS, and four-quadrant operation must be achieved without a zero-current discontinuous section. To remove any zero-current discontinuous sections, circulation current control is required, but it is hard to analyze and design it because of the characteristics of thyristor nonlinearity. In this paper, delay time of the thyristor and processor is implemented using a zero-order hold, and an equivalent model is designed and analyzed. Circulation current control and difference current control are similarly analyzed because both equivalent circuits are the same, and are satisfied with a 54° phase margin and a 11 ms step response. In addition, gamma control is designed to restrict the firing angle to prevent commutation failure and commutation failure is prevented by the proposed gamma control, even if a short circuit or sag occurs in the grid. To verify the feasibility of the VS converter, a real Zynq-based controller is assembled and a power system, including the VS converter, is implemented in an RTDS for the hardware-in-the-loop simulation. This paper presents a flexible dc voltage balancing control technique of the modular multilevel cascaded converter with single-delta bridge-cells (MMCC-SDBC) in the distributed energy resources (DERs) system for maintaining the stable operation under different unbalanced conditions. This paper presents protection strategies for a medium-voltage dc (MVDC) microgrid at a remote area mine site. The microgrid is operated to provide high power quality and reliability to sensitive loads and to improve the energy efficiency of the mining equipment. In the MVDC microgrid, various local distributed energy resources have been used, including photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines, a fuel-cell stack, an energy storage system, and mobile diesel generators. For the protection of transmission lines, a communication-based differential protection scheme with solid-state electronic relays is employed to isolate the faulted part of the MVDC microgrid. This is further reinforced by dc overcurrent protection as a backup. Earlier research work had neglected the backup protection for dc systems. In addition, communication-based dc directional overcurrent protective relays are used for both source protection and load protection to support a bidirectional power flow. This paper presents an extended electromotive-force-based discrete-time sliding-mode observer (DSMO) for rotor position/speed sensorless control of interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs). Without using voltage sensors to measure IPMSM terminal voltages, the reference voltages generated by the vector control system are used as inputs for the DSMO. However, due to the inverter dead-time effect, the mismatch between the reference voltages and actual terminal voltages will degrade the performance of DSMO. In this paper, the periodically oscillating rotor position estimation error caused by the dead-time is first analyzed. Then, a dead-time compensation scheme is proposed to mitigate this position estimation error. This paper presents an economic evaluation of the hybrid voltage control scheme with distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) and active power curtailment for enhancing photovoltaic (PV) penetration in Taipower distribution systems. During the peak solar irradiation period, the hybrid voltage control scheme is utilized to avoid the voltage violation problem and, thus, to increase the PV installation capacity and reduce the feeder loss as well. The annual savings from feeder loss reduction, the annual revenue of PV power sales, the initial capital investment cost for a PV project with or without a DSTATCOM, and the operating and maintenance (O&M) cost are then taken into account to evaluate the benefit and cost of the PV investment. This paper covers analyses of net present value (NPV), benefit–cost ratio (BCR), incremental BCR (IBCR), and payback period (PP) for a new PV project or an existing one to employ the hybrid enhancing scheme. With proper selection of PV and DSTATCOM capacities, the investment can be very profitable. Comparison of the results by these indicators is also presented. This paper proposes a comprehensive and systematic approach in developing a new switching lookup table for direct power control (DPC) based on grid virtual flux estimation, implemented in a grid-connected three-phase ac-to-dc converter. The approach provides detailed information regarding the effects of a particular converter voltage space vector to the instantaneous input active and reactive power distributions in the converter system. Thus, the optimal converter switching states are able to be selected by the switching table, allowing the smooth control of the active and the reactive power for each sector. The usage of input ac voltage sensors for synchronization and input power calculation is avoided by applying a virtual flux concept in the control scheme. The grid virtual flux estimation technique is used to extract the grid voltage information from the converter switching states, line currents, and dc-link output voltage. Detailed explanation and analysis regarding the development of virtual flux DPC utilizing the proposed switching lookup table is given in this paper. Finally, the steady-state as well as dynamic performances of the proposed controller is tested both in simulations and laboratory experiments. This paper proposes a new circuit configuration and a control scheme for a single-phase current-source inverter with a power decoupling circuit which is called as the active buffer. The proposed inverter achieves a low-dc-input voltage ripple and also provides a sinusoidal current that can achieve unity power factor, without large passive components in the dc bus such as smoothing inductors and electrolytic capacitors. These components are conventionally required in order to decouple the power pulsation caused by the single-phase power source. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed inverter are demonstrated experimentally. From the experimental results, the input voltage ripple is 8.87%, and the output current total harmonic distortion is 4.24%. In addition, an output power factor of 99% and a maximum efficiency of 94.9% are obtained. Finally, it is confirmed that the maximum power densities of the conventional circuit and the proposed circuit are 2.75 kW/L at the switching frequency of 70 kHz and 4.86 kW/L at the switching frequency of 80 kHz, respectively. Distribution planning has been generally focused on providing sufficient base power delivery capacity to supply the peak load demand. Renewable generation and various smart grid technologies add the requirement that the time-varying characteristic of controls and loads be included in the planning problem. A sequential-time power flow solution capability is needed to properly account for the time-dependent impact of these technologies and any other technology that results in significant changes to the daily loadshape. Having the capability to perform chronological simulations allows the distribution planner to properly account for the effects of such things as shunt capacitor switching controls, modifying voltage regulation schemes to provide headroom for distributed generation and to optimize voltage profiles, and modeling advanced inverter controls. This paper presents a novel single-phase ac–ac converter with power factor correction and output current control for circuit-breaker testing according to the IEC 60898 standard. The important advantages of the proposed circuit are low component count and fast responses for the standard requirement, especially a current step at the beginning of the test. The proposed single-phase ac–ac converter can operate in either buck or boost mode to accommodate the need for a wide range of output current while satisfying the ramping and step current requirements in the standard. The control circuits consist of two parts, dc voltage control of dc-link capacitors and ac output current controls operating simultaneously. This paper introduces a novel isolated hybrid resonant converter with smooth transition between multiple operating modes. With the simple addition of a bidirectional ac switch, the highly efficient series resonant converter operating in the discontinuous conduction mode is combined with a phase-shifted full-bridge buck converter and a pulsewidth-modulated boost converter in order to provide high power conversion efficiency over a wide input-voltage operating range utilizing a simple topology and simple control techniques. First, the topology is introduced, and the converter's operating modes are discussed. Next, closed-loop input-voltage controllers are designed for the different operating modes, and a smooth transition technique is introduced using a two-carrier modulation scheme. Experimental results are provided to verify the proposed system using a 300-W prototype that achieved a 97.5% California Energy Commission weighted efficiency with a 30-V input including all auxiliary and control losses. This paper presents a modular multilevel cascade converter based on triple-star bridge cells (MMCC-TSBC), devoting itself to control and experiment. The TSBC is one of the direct ac-to-ac power converters capable of bidirectional power flow with three-phase sinusoidal currents with any power factor at both supply (input) and motor (output) sides. Therefore, it is suitable for medium-voltage high-power motor drives with regenerative braking, intended to replace a conventional line-commutated cycloconverter using thyristors. This paper provides an intensive discussion on how to control the whole TSBC system, how to regulate and balance the dc mean voltages of all the dc capacitors, and how to mitigate their ac voltage fluctuations. In this paper, a simple and robust method for parameter estimation at rotor standstill is presented for interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous machines. The estimated parameters are the stator resistance through dc test, the $dq$ inductances using high-frequency injection, and the permanent magnet flux by means of a closed-loop speed control maintaining rotor stationary. The proposed method does not require either locking the rotor or additional/special power supplies. The validity of the suggested method has been verified by implementation on two IPM motor prototypes. Finally, the estimated parameters have been compared against results obtained through finite-element simulations and with machine magnetic characterization, separately performed, to validate the method's effectiveness.
