A multi-level boost topology based on a flying capacitor is compared in this work with the hybrid, multi-level, partial power processing topology already presented in the literature for use as a highly efficient and compact dc/dc stage in 1500-V, two-stage, grid-connected PV systems. Different variations of the resonant stage of the hybrid topology are analyzed and compared in terms of losses, volume and complexity. Full multivariable optimization is conducted for the multi-level boost topology with different number of levels and for all the analyzed variations of the resonant stage of the hybrid topology. Appropriately rated new classes of 650-V and 900-V WBG devices are included in the optimization algorithm. It is concluded that due to the dominant conduction losses and gap in the voltage rating of the commercially available WBG devices between 650V and 200V, increase of the number of levels over 4 leads to the deteriorated loss and volume performances. All the analysis related to the resonant stage of the hybrid topology is confirmed by detailed and comprehensive measurements of two prototypes of 4kW of nominal and 7kW of maximal power. Additionally, all the loss models applied in the optimization algorithms presented in this paper are confirmed by detailed measurements, thermal calibration and finite element thermal simulations of the wide bandgap devices and inductor designs employed in this work. This paper proposes a soft-switched modulation technique with synchronous rectification for an isolated single-stage single-phase matrix-type dc–ac converter. The dc side consists of a full bridge inverter, and the ac side is a 2×2 matrix converter-based cycloconverter. The proposed unipolar modulation strategy provides zero current switching/zero voltage switching (ZVS) for the ac side devices and ZVS-on for the dc side devices. It also allows natural commutation of the current flowing through the secondary side leakage inductor of the isolation transformer and the grid inductor during unity power factor (UPF) condition, thus eliminates the requirement of snubber circuit. An improved soft-switched flyback-based regenerative snubber circuit is also presented for non-UPF operation. Proposed snubber circuit recycles the energy stored in the snubber capacitors in every switching cycle. A guideline to design snubber circuit along with a comparative study is discussed in this paper. Performance of the proposed hybrid modulation technique is evaluated in an SiC mosfet based 1.2-kW dc–ac converter prototype. The use of electronic equipment and other dc-compatible appliances in homes and offices is increasing at a very fast rate, as well as the distributed generation of energy. These two statements will most likely trigger, in a near future, the adoption of district-scale dc grids, connecting dc microgeneration plants and consumers, in an effort to cut the number of conversion steps required to deliver power to dc appliances. DC–DC converters will be fundamental in these systems, allowing the establishment of several voltage levels. The reliability of these converters plays a critical role, ensuring service continuity of the loads connected to them. With the increment of reliability in mind, this paper proposes a simple yet effective open-circuit fault diagnostic method suitable for interleaved dc–dc boost converters, but equally functional for other dc–dc converter topologies. The improvements introduced in this paper greatly simplify the diagnostic action, while making the correct diagnostic of faults independent of the switching duty cycle. Moreover, an alternative reconfiguration scheme is proposed to mitigate the adverse impacts of such faults. Multioutput converters with single input source are currently studied as an alternative to conventional dc–dc topologies in order to improve power density in low-power multiload applications. This paper reviews three different ways in which a boost topology can be customized to supply multiple outputs. The first way uses a charge-sharing approach using individual switches to distribute inductor energy to different capacitors. The second method of creating a multiport converter (MPC) combines two converters with similar front end to generate two outputs using only one controlled switch. Using this method, a boost converter can be combined with single–ended primary–inductor converter (SEPIC), Cuk, and current source converter topologies. The third method uses time multiplexing of switches to produce two regulated ports and is referred to as switched-boost action. This method uses relatively less number of switches and allows regulation and control of all the outputs. Practical utility of switched-boost action based MPC is reported in this paper. This switched-boost MPC is applied to a renewable power converter system to interface a solar panel, a battery, and home loads to produce a 12-V and a 48-V bus. The 12-V bus is interfaced to battery and capable of optimally charging the battery in constant current–constant voltage (CC-CV) mode. The converter is demonstrated to operate with solar panel as it supplies a 12-V battery and a 48-V load bus. In this paper, it is described how the circulating current flows between inverters that have isolated dc link such as cascaded H-bridge (CHB) topology when they are operating in parallel. In this case, zero sequence circulating current, which normally flows through shared dc link, cannot flow between inverters in parallel. However, circulating current is provoked by asynchronous switching instant of devices, difference of dc-link voltages of parallel inverters, and unbalanced impedance. The circulating current should be suppressed by a sharing inductor that is inserted between inverters. Generally, all of the inverters should synthesize the same output voltage reference for load current control to minimize the size of this sharing reactor. However, this conventional method cannot guarantee diminishing circulating current in the transient state and even in the steady state. In this paper, in order to reduce sharing reactance, after deriving circulating current model from general case of n-parallel operation, circulating current control method is devised based on the model. This proposed algorithm is applied to active front end five-level-CHB inverter system for medium voltage drive. Unipolar-pulsewidth modulation (UP-PWM) inverter takes advantages of high power efficiency and small output chokes which is widely used in the industry. However, UP-PWM inverters cannot be used in parallel operation due to a current unbalance problem. This paper studies the current unbalance problem of paralleled UP-PWM inverters with common dc bus and ac bus. First, the problem of unbalanced inductor current is defined and analyzed. Second, a technique to eliminate unbalanced currents is proposed. The proposed current balancing technique only requires one more current sensor in an inverter module rather than changing converter topology or modulation method, which makes it possible to apply UP-PWM inverters in parallel-operation while keeping the advantages of unipolar switching. The proposed current balancing method is verified by both simulation and hardware experiment. An improved bridgeless (BL) Cuk converter-based electric vehicle (EV) battery charger with high power factor and increased efficiency is designed and developed in this paper. It provides low cost and high-power-density-based charging solution for the EV. This charger incorporates less number of devices operating over one switching cycle, which reduces the additional conduction loss incurred by a diode bridge rectifier of the conventional charger. Hence, it improves the charger's efficiency. The added advantage of the proposed topology is that the unwanted capacitive coupling loop is removed, as well as the unwanted conduction through the body diode of the inactive switch in the previously developed BL Cuk converter is avoided. This significantly improves the charger's efficiency. For the constant current and constant voltage charging, the commands are synchronized by a flyback converter. The proposed charger draws a sinusoidal current from ac mains and the total harmonic distortion in the supply current is reduced to the limits specified by the IEC 61000-3-2 guidelines. A switching-capacitor-based buck–boost converter (with common ground) for point of load applications is proposed in this paper. It is capable of operating in stand-alone buck or boost mode in addition to its primary operation of performing the buck–boost conversion. The striking feature of the proposed converter is low source current ripple content irrespective of its mode of operation (buck–boost, buck, or boost). First, feasible pulsewidth modulation schemes for the proposed converter are identified and thereafter the corresponding circuit performance analysis, steady-state analysis, and state-space modelling is established. Through steady-state analysis, voltage gain expressions are formulated and equations defining L-C components are derived in terms of their ripple quantities. The state-space models are used to formulate small-signal analysis and to obtain the relevant transfer functions required in the controller design. A voltage-mode/current-mode controller is designed, with a tradeoff in bandwidth, to control the proposed converter and transit it from buck to boost mode or vice versa seamlessly. A 30–55 W, 100 kHz, prototype point of load converter with 36-V input dc source is built to supply power at constant load voltage of either 48 or 28 V. In this paper, a fifth-order boost point-of-load converter is developed by cascading a modified fourth-order boost converter with a combination of L–C and diode. This topology has the following salient features: Single-switch topology, common ground between source and load, low-voltage stress across intermediate capacitors, and voltage gain same as other reported fifth-order boost converters with no common ground. Steady-state and dynamic analyses demonstrate the proposed converter's boosting feature and dynamic performance, respectively. A contoured robust Bode plot methodology is employed to design the robust voltage-mode controller to ensure load voltage regulation in the presence of uncertainties. The necessary and sufficient conditions under which the designed controller guarantees the load voltage regulation and robust stability are obtained. A step-by-step robust controller design procedure is outlined. The salient features of the proposed converter and its robust performance are studied analytically, using the MATLAB platform, and validated experimentally on a 60-W prototype module. This paper investigates a multilevel inverter composed of series/parallel-connected H-bridges. The presented structure can be used for applications in which the use of semiconductor switches with low-voltage and low-current ratings is intended. A comprehensive system model, an overall control strategy to adjust the output voltage with constant magnitude and frequency, and a level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) strategy based on a voltage vectors unidimensional analysis and a plane analysis are presented. The LS-PWM is capable of mitigating the low-frequency circulating current, thus generating multilevel voltage signals with low harmonic distortion, maximum number of levels, and low dv/dt. In addition, considering a wide range of values of voltages and currents and various power levels, the total converter losses are reduced compared with the conventional multilevel converters. Two multilevel conventional inverters with the same number of semiconductor switches are used for comparison. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the studied converter. Parallel ac-link universal power converters are a relatively new class of power converters that can be configured as dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, and ac–ac. These converters are extensions of a buck–boost converter in which the current of the inductor is alternating and the input and output can have any number of phases with any forms, voltage amplitude, or frequency. By placing a small capacitor in parallel with the link inductor, all the switches can benefit from soft switching. The main limitation of the parallel ac-link universal power converter is its large number of switches. A three-phase ac–ac configuration requires 24 unidirectional switches. This paper proposes two topologies based on the parallel ac-link universal power converters that significantly reduce the number of switches. One of the proposed topologies reduces the number of switches in a three-phase ac–ac configuration to 16. The other topology reduces the number of switches to 10. The latter can offer galvanic isolation with only a single-phase high-frequency transformer. This paper reports an elegant approach to address two major challenges of transformerless grid-connected microinverters, common-mode earth leakage current and double-frequency power pulsation across the photovoltaic (PV) terminal. The proposed solution uses an embedded decoupling capacitor in a doubly grounded boost–buck ( $\acute{\mathrm{C}}$ uk) derived topology. An intelligent switching scheme ensures that a large swing of the decoupling capacitor voltage is easily accommodated. Thus, film capacitors can be used instead of electrolytic capacitors, which helps increase equipment lifetime. Details of circuit operation are provided along with dynamic modeling and controller design for close-loop operation. In this paper, a novel nonisolated bidirectional soft-switching dc–dc converter based on series power units (PU-BDC) with unipolar and bipolar structure for dc networks interconnection is proposed. All semiconductor devices in the PU-BDC operate under soft-switching conditions in both directions with low voltage stress. By operating in the discontinuous conduction mode, all switches and diodes are turned on naturally under zero current. By introducing an auxiliary zero-current-transition commutation cell in each power unit, zero current turn-off of all switches and diodes is achieved to reduce the turn-off loss. Besides, the PU-BDC has a transformerless structure with small volume and low cost, which makes it more suitable for small-scale or medium-scale dc networks and distributed generation systems. In addition, two types of bipolar PU-BDC are proposed to extend its application to bipolar dc networks interconnection. The control system was also optimized for grid-connection applications by providing an output voltage control strategy, a voltage gain control strategy, and a power control strategy to maintain the voltage level or keep a constant voltage gain of the networks and performing precise power control. Finally, simulations of a unipolar PU-BDC and a bipolar PU-BDC with three power units were implemented, and a 1.6-kW experimental prototype of the unipolar PU-BDC with three power units was developed to verify the effectiveness of the converter. This paper proposes a new high-gain soft-switching dc–dc topology based on a switched inductor boost converter (SIBC). A conventional SIBC as a high gain boost topology has the issues of high conduction loss in switching diodes and high switching loss in the main switches. Also, it has severe electromagnetic interference (EMI) issue due to high-frequency ringing formed by parasitic inductance and diode junction capacitors. The new topology is derived with the objective of achieving zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn on of the main switch. Instead of adding extra active clamp zero voltage transition (ZVT) path at the switching node, the proposed topology augments the auxiliary ZVT path to the switching diode path. This is achieved by replacing the switching diodes with synchronous switches. The new topology can achieve soft switching for all the switches and alleviate the EMI issue. All the diodes achieve zero current switching (ZCS) turn off without reverse recovery. Auxiliary switches have ZCS turn on and ZVS turn off, and the main switches have ZVS turn on. The soft-switching SIBC also reduces the conduction loss in the switching diodes. A numerical simulation in PLECS and a prototype hardware are built corresponding to a micro-inverter application with 100 kHz switching frequency. In this paper, a hybrid bidirectional dc–dc converter is presented, which is a combination of a switched-capacitor converter and an inductor-based converter with low component counts. The input current ripple and peak charging current are small with the help of the inductor. The proposed converter is applicable in the battery charge/discharge systems, such as the distributed renewable energy systems, battery equalizer, auxiliary power supplies, traction drive system, and dual-voltage automotive systems based in new electrical architecture concept, where common ground is not required and within the voltage-gain range of 2–6. A comprehensive analysis of the steady-state operation, small-signal model, and component stress is given. The comparison with an alternative topology shows the advantages of low component counts, low total capacitor voltage stress, low inductor current, and low total active switch stress for the 42/14 V voltage level. This paper presents a single-stage light-emitting diode (LED) driver based on a bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converter and a half-bridge CLCL resonant converter for street lighting applications. The proposed single-stage topology integrates the PFC converter and the CLCL resonant converter by sharing active power switches. The bridgeless PFC converter adopts two buck–boost circuits operating in discontinuous-conduction mode to achieve input-current shaping. It uses two diodes instead of a rectifier bridge to reduce the power loss caused by the diodes. Owing to its superior soft-switching characteristics, the CLCL resonant converter is used. The proposed LED driver has superior features, such as high efficiency, near unity power factor, low total harmonic distortion, and relatively few diodes. This paper presents a dc/dc buck–boost converter topology with high-voltage gain and dual outputs. Unlike many of the high step-down/step-up dc/dc converters, this topology uses a relatively ower number of LC components and three active semiconductor devices switched in a nonoverlapping way. Due to the duty cycle limitation, high gain (typically more than 4) is very difficult to achieve in a single-stage regular buck–boost dc/dc converter. In the proposed converter, the overall gains at both the output ports are nonlinear functions of duty-cycles of the power devices, which help achieve an overall step-down/step-up gain of 10–15. An experimental prototype converting 48 V dc to ±5 V dc at 100 W with closed loop control is developed in order to verify the operation and effectiveness of the proposed converter structure. Boost-derived hybrid converter (BDHC) is a single-stage converter that produces both dc and ac output voltages. The operation of BDHC under continuous conduction mode is satisfactory. However, the nonzero discontinuous conduction mode (NZ-DCM) and standalone ac operation restrict the stable operation of the converter. To mitigate these limitations, modified BDHC (MBDHC) is proposed in this paper. The main idea behind these changes is to redeem NZ-DCM by forced continuous conduction mode (FCM). The adverse effect of NZ-DCM in a BDHC is analyzed in terms of ac output voltage total harmonic distortion, and dc output voltage ripple. This analysis is further extended for MBDHC to highlight the benefits of FCM. Moreover, for hybrid loads, the efficiency of MBDHC is compared with its counterpart BDHC and cascaded boost inverter. For the high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) power transmission system of offshore wind power, dc/dc converters are the potential solution to collect the power generated by off-shore wind farms to HVDC terminals. The converters operate with high-voltage gain, high efficiency, and fault tolerance over a wide range of operating conditions. In this paper, an isolated ultrahigh step-up dc/dc converter with a scalable modular structure is proposed for HVDC offshore wind power collection. A flyback-forward converter is employed as the power cell to form the expandable electrically isolated modular dc/dc converter. The duty ratio and phase-shift angle control are also developed for the proposed converter. Fault-tolerant characteristics of the converter are illustrated through the redundancy operation and fault-ride-through tests. Redundancy operation is designed to maintain high operation efficiency of the converters and fault-ride-through operation improves the converter reliability under harsh operating conditions. Analytical studies are carried out, and a 750-W prototype with three modular cells is built and experimentally tested to verify the performance of the proposed modular dc/dc converter. A non-isolated impulse commutated current-fed voltage doubler based non-isolated inverter for a solar photovoltaic, battery or fuel cell application is proposed in this paper. Impulse commutation enables device voltage clamping with zero current commutation of the semiconductor devices. It eliminates the traditional problem of turn-off voltage spike across the devices in current-fed converters. Unlike resonant converters, resonance pulse appears for a very short interval leading to zero current turn-off of devices. It therefore, limits peak and circulating currents through the components. Voltage doubler is selected to achieve 2 $\times$ gain. Variable frequency modulation ensures output voltage regulation with input and load variations. Diode rectifier front-ends with large dc bus capacitors used in variable-frequency drives draw discontinuous current from the power system, resulting in a poor input power factor and high input current distortion. The 12-pulse and 18-pulse techniques used to reduce input current harmonics are popular because of their simplicity but are bulky and expensive. Autotransformer techniques require additional external magnetic components that are bulky and add to the cost of the system. A new electronically isolated 12-pulse autotransformer topology that does not need bulky external magnetic components is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology employs active switches to achieve electronic isolation between the two rectifiers, resulting in continuous input current with reduced harmonics. The proposed nonregenerative active scheme achieves less than 5% total harmonic distortion at a much lower cost compared with other passive or active topologies currently in the market. This paper presents the performance analysis and comparison of two types of bidirectional dc–dc converters—cascaded buck–boost capacitor in the middle and cascaded buck–boost inductor in the middle for use in plug-in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The comparison of the two converters is based on device requirements, rating of switches and components, control strategy, and performance. Each of the converter topologies has some advantages over the other in certain aspects. Efficiency analysis has been carried out for specific scenarios in vehicle applications. A single-stage offline power supply for LED lighting applications, based on the integration of a buck power factor corrector (PFC) and a tapped buck dc/dc converter, is presented in this paper. In addition to the high step-down capability and the output current regulation, the proposed topology effectively provides PFC to comply with the harmonic injection and energy-saving standards EN 61000-3-2 and Energy Star. The low bus voltage level, resulting from the use of an input step-down PFC stage, actually allows the use of film technology capacitors, instead of short lifetime electrolytic capacitors, to filter the bus voltage and reduce the LED current ripple component at twice the line frequency. Due to the high reliability, the simple structure, the good line-side spectral performance, and the low component count, the proposed topology effectively results to be very suitable for medium-power solid-state lighting applications, as in the case of LED downlighting. This paper presents a new nonisolated buck/boost-type multilevel dc–dc converter suitable for high-power and medium/high-voltage application. The main features of the proposed topology are as follows: low voltage across the semiconductors, low switching losses, and reduced volume of the output filter. The theoretical analysis is carried out for a five-level bidirectional structure of the proposed converter, operating in Buck mode. The proposed topology presents some capacitors, and their voltage must be balanced for proper operation of the converter. Thus, a capacitor voltage balancing active control using a feedforward technique is proposed and analyzed in detail. In order to validate the theoretical analysis, a prototype with 10 kW output power capability, 1.3 kV to 800 V input-to-output voltage, and 20 kHz of switching frequency was built and experimented. This paper introduces a novel isolated hybrid resonant converter with smooth transition between multiple operating modes. With the simple addition of a bidirectional ac switch, the highly efficient series resonant converter operating in the discontinuous conduction mode is combined with a phase-shifted full-bridge buck converter and a pulsewidth-modulated boost converter in order to provide high power conversion efficiency over a wide input-voltage operating range utilizing a simple topology and simple control techniques. First, the topology is introduced, and the converter's operating modes are discussed. Next, closed-loop input-voltage controllers are designed for the different operating modes, and a smooth transition technique is introduced using a two-carrier modulation scheme. Experimental results are provided to verify the proposed system using a 300-W prototype that achieved a 97.5% California Energy Commission weighted efficiency with a 30-V input including all auxiliary and control losses.
