Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been a promising candidate in high voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission systems. Due to the features of simple structure, low cost, and low power losses, half-bridge (HB) is usually adopted as the submodule circuit in the traditional MMC. However, an HB submodule circuit-based MMC does not have the capability of blocking dc short-circuit fault, which obstructs the development of low-cost HVdc systems with overhead lines. In order to solve this problem, an MMC with active clamped T-type submodule (ACTSM) to own dc fault blocking capability is proposed in this paper. Compared with other submodule circuits, the proposed ACTSM has many features, such as symmetrical blocking capability, low power losses, low voltage stress, and low amount of independent drive signals. The topology, operation principle, dc fault blocking capability, and distribution of power losses of the ACTSM are presented in this paper. A single-phase bridgeless Cuk ac/dc power factor correction (PFC) rectifier with positive output voltage is proposed in this paper. For low output voltage product applications, the rectifier is designed to convert high input voltage to low output voltage. Due to no bridge diodes required and thus decreased input conduction losses, the proposed rectifier efficiency can be improved. The proposed rectifier operates in discontinuous conduction mode, and the current-loop circuit is hence not needed. In addition, only a single switch is used in the rectifier to simplify the control circuit design. A simple translation method to have the positive output voltage in the Cuk converter is presented in the rectifier to reduce the component counts and the cost. The operational principles, steady-state analysis, and design procedure of the proposed rectifier are addressed in detail in this paper. Simulation and experimental results obtained from a 150-W rated prototype circuit with input of 90–130 Vrms, 60 Hz, and output of 48 Vdc have verified the validity of the proposed rectifier. This paper discusses the use of a cascaded multilevel converter for flexible power conditioning in smart-grid applications. The main feature of the proposed scheme is the use of independent dc links with reduced voltages, which makes such a topology an ideal candidate for medium- and high-power applications with increased reliability. The developed control strategy regulates independent dc-link voltages in each H-bridge cell, and allows the selective and flexible compensation of disturbing currents under a variety of voltage conditions without requiring any reference frame transformation. The selective control strategies are based on the decompositions proposed in the conservative power theory, which result in several current-related terms associated with specific load characteristics. These current components are independent of each other and may be used to define different compensation strategies, which can be selective in minimizing particular effects of disturbing loads. This paper investigates the utilization of two different six-leg configurations of single-phase to three-phase converters. One of the topologies is transformerless and the other is transformer based. The studied converters allow feeding the load voltage with sinusoidal voltages with constant amplitude and frequency, and to operate with sinusoidal grid current with high power factor. The system model and pulse-width modulation techniques for one of the topologies are given. Control strategies for both topologies are provided. The studied topologies are compared with the conventional in terms of dc-link specification, voltages harmonic distortions, semiconductor losses, and other characteristics. This paper discusses a new circuit configuration and a new control method for a single-phase ac–dc converter with power factor (P.F.) correction and a power pulsation decoupling function. The proposed converter can achieve low total harmonic distortion (THD) on the input current and the power pulsation decoupling function between the input and output sides, which allows low output voltage ripple even on a small output energy buffer at the same time using an active buffer. Therefore, the proposed converter does not require large smoothing capacitors or large smoothing inductors. The buffering energy is stored by a small capacitor, which controls the variation of the capacitor voltage through the active buffer. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed converter are investigated experimentally. The experimental results reveal that the input current THD is 1.44%, the rate of the output voltage ripple is 6.33%, and the input P.F. is over 99%. Energy harvesting has become a popular source for low-power electronic systems such as wireless sensors and biomedical implants. Energy can be extracted from a number of ambient conditions such as vibration, solar, and thermal gradient. Just like renewable sources, the associated switching power converters can be controlled to harvest maximum power from these miniature systems. However, conventional schemes, such as a conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller for solar cells, are complex and cannot be utilized in low-power energy systems due to their cost and power requirements. In this paper, a novel optimum energy harvesting scheme is proposed, which controls the duty cycle of the converter to maximize the output power of the system. The control system employs only simple mixed-signal components and can be applied to low-power systems. The proposed scheme does not depend on the characteristics of a specific source and is applicable for different energy systems. In this paper, it is utilized to achieve optimized energy harvesting for two completely different fixed excitation systems, namely, a low-voltage vibration-based electromagnetic microgenerator and a miniature solar cell array. A multilevel boost power factor correction (PFC) rectifier is presented in this paper controlled by cascaded controller and multicarrier pulse width modulation technique. The presented topology has less active semiconductor switches compared to similar ones reducing the number of required gate drives that would shrink the manufactured box significantly. A simple controller has been implemented on the studied converter to generate a constant voltage at the output while generating a five-level voltage waveform at the input without connecting the load to the neutral point of the dc bus capacitors. Multicarrier pulse-width modulation technique has been used to produce switching pulses from control signal at a fixed switching frequency. Multilevel voltage waveform harmonics has been analyzed comprehensively which affects the harmonic contents of input current and the size of required filters directly. Full experimental results confirm the good dynamic performance of the proposed five-level PFC boost rectifier in delivering power from ac grid to the dc loads while correcting the power factor at the ac side as well as reducing the current harmonics remarkably. This paper proposes three dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) topologies. Such configurations are able to compensate voltage sags/swells in three-phase four-wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. The proposed systems use two independent dc links. Proposed configurations present advantages in terms of switch blocking voltages and consequently lower dc-link voltage rating. The complete control system, including the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique, is developed, and comparisons between the proposed configurations and a conventional one are performed. This paper proposes a new vector-based dead-time compensation method for three-level T-type converters. The origins and effects of the dead-time voltage errors are analyzed in detail for different switching commutations and load conditions. In order to eliminate the dead-time distortion in each phase, a dead-time error voltage vector is introduced to adjust the reference voltage vector depending on load current polarity. The proposed vector-based dead-time compensation scheme has several advantages. First, it can be applied to multilevel converters with any number of voltage levels using any modulation schemes. Second, the pulse loss issue which is common in conventional pulse-based compensation strategies can be eliminated. In addition, the pulse saturation can be mitigated by operating the converters in overmodulation regions. Finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) offers many advantages over more traditional control techniques, such as the ability to avoid cascaded control loops, easy inclusion of constraint, and fast transient response of the control system. This control scheme has been recently applied to several power conversion systems, such as two, three, or more level converters, matrix converters, etc. Unfortunately, because of the lack of the presence of a modulation strategy, this approach produces spread spectrum harmonics which are difficult to filter effectively. This may result in a degraded power quality when compared to more traditional control schemes. Furthermore, high switching frequencies may be needed, considering the limited number of switching states in the converter. This paper presents a novel multiobjective modulated predictive control strategy, which preserves the desired characteristics of FCS-MPC but produces superior waveform quality. Photovoltaic (PV) systems have become a popular type of distributed generation units (DGUs) for small and medium levels of renewable energy generation. When grid connected, these DGUs are designed and operated to deliver electric power to their host grid through power electronic converters. The nonlinear and switched natures, along with the control actions, of these PECs can influence the voltage–current behaviors during faults in grid-connected PV systems. This paper experimentally investigates the voltage–current behaviors during faults occurring in grid-connected PV systems. Results of these investigation show that voltages and currents at the point-of-common-coupling (PCC) experience changes in their magnitudes and harmonic distortions due to faults occurring on both sides of PCC. A new online parameter tuning method for digital power factor corrector (PFC) with transition current mode (TCM) control is proposed in this paper. The proposed method copes with the parameter variation issue, which results in discontinuous current mode operation and larger current ripple. The proposed method is to give one more current sample in one sampling period in order to estimate the inductance of a boost inductor online, thereby tuning the parameter of the predicted switching period. It will be shown by experimental results that the proposed online parameter tuning method can retain TCM operation even under full-load condition and slightly increase the converter efficiency. Experimental results derived from a digital-signal-processor-based controller are presented for confirmation. The PFC is with 270-W power rating, 100-V/50-Hz input, and 385-V/dc output. Fault-tolerant permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) drives for wind turbine applications play a major role in improving reliability and availability levels, since power converters are very prone to fail. In this paper, a fault-tolerant converter with the ability to handle power switch open-circuit faults is addressed. The main concern of the proposed converter topology is the minimization of the hardware requirements, leading to a low increase of the system cost. First, the employed fault diagnostic technique does not require additional measurements, nor high computational effort. Secondly, the circuit topology reconfiguration implies a minimum number of extra components as well as minimal oversizing of the standard ones. Accordingly, a four-switch three-phase converter with the dc bus midpoint connected to the transformer neutral point and a three-switch three-phase rectifier are adopted for post-fault operation of the grid- and PMSG-side converters, respectively. Vector control strategies are proposed for both converters under analysis, focusing the issues of capacitor voltages balancing and torque ripple minimization. This paper investigates the operation of space-vector-based hysteresis current control in the synchronous reference frame (SRF) for grid-connected voltage source converters. The space-vector-based approach allows for the systematic application of zero-voltage vectors and prevents high switching frequencies caused by phase interaction. The average switching frequency can be minimized by always selecting the zero-voltage vector that is closest to the previous switching state. Implementation in the SRF ensures a simple structure based on two three-level hysteresis comparators and a switching table that fits well into the traditional structure of vector-oriented current control. For operation in a grid-connected converter with an LCL filter, the current references to the hysteresis controllers are given by a dc-link voltage controller and an active damping mechanism for suppressing filter oscillations. Results from simulations and laboratory experiments are presented to illustrate the features of the investigated approach compared to traditional phase-current hysteresis controllers.
