Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been a promising candidate in high voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission systems. Due to the features of simple structure, low cost, and low power losses, half-bridge (HB) is usually adopted as the submodule circuit in the traditional MMC. However, an HB submodule circuit-based MMC does not have the capability of blocking dc short-circuit fault, which obstructs the development of low-cost HVdc systems with overhead lines. In order to solve this problem, an MMC with active clamped T-type submodule (ACTSM) to own dc fault blocking capability is proposed in this paper. Compared with other submodule circuits, the proposed ACTSM has many features, such as symmetrical blocking capability, low power losses, low voltage stress, and low amount of independent drive signals. The topology, operation principle, dc fault blocking capability, and distribution of power losses of the ACTSM are presented in this paper. Achieving high efficiency and high power density features of intermediate bus converter (IBC) in data center application is very critical. This paper proposes a nonisolated switched-tank dc–dc converter (STC) to meet the high requirement of IBC. The proposed STC has fixed voltage conversion ratio. Theoretical analysis provides the guideline for designing resonant tank and nonresonant tank as well as selecting proper deadtime for the proposed circuit. With resonant operation feature of the proposed circuit, zero current switching is realized on all switching devices to help the high-efficiency operation of the proposed converter. Through the proposed design methodology in this paper, power loss on switching devices and planar inductors can be minimized. In addition, detailed power loss analysis and breakdown provide hints for further efficiency improvement. Simulation has been performed to validate the operating principle of the proposed STC. A designed 6x STC (450 W nominal/600 W maximum) based on eGaNFETs is demonstrated. With 54 V typical input voltage, the output of the 6x STC is 9 V. The GaN-based prototype achieves a peak efficiency of 98.55%. Also, it achieves 97.18% efficiency and 750 W/in3 power density at 450 W. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a new configuration of high gain (HG) single ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) with a ripple-free input current to maximize the efficiency of the PV panel for standalone water pumping system (WPS). The ripple eliminating circuit combined with the HG SEPIC converter to achieve reduced ripples in photovoltaic (PV) current is independent to the duty cycle control and hence, it can be easily integrated to the main power circuit of configuration. This circuit does not need any active switches, control, or drive circuit for its execution. The ripple eliminating circuit yields a complete removal of the electrolytic capacitor connected across the PV array and significantly reduces the inductance of the HG SEPIC converter. It also improves the response and power density of the dc–dc converter. The large gain of dc–dc converter enables the use of low-voltage PV panel and minimizes the partial shading and parasitic capacitance effects on PV array source. Due to the substantial compatibility between natural characteristics of switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive and WPS, a four-phase SRM drive is utilized in the proposed scheme. In addition, a single current sensor based maximum power point tracking technique is utilized in the proposed system, which helps to reduce the cost and improve the accuracy of the overall system. This paper proposes a high-frequency isolated dc/dc converter, whose switching frequency is 20 MHz. Meanwhile, the switch voltage stress is reduced based on optimal switch impedance. In the proposed converter, the switch can operate in ZVS condition, which can help to reduce the switching loss. A mathematical model of the proposed high frequency converter is built, which provides an effective design method for the system parameters. A single-phase bridgeless Cuk ac/dc power factor correction (PFC) rectifier with positive output voltage is proposed in this paper. For low output voltage product applications, the rectifier is designed to convert high input voltage to low output voltage. Due to no bridge diodes required and thus decreased input conduction losses, the proposed rectifier efficiency can be improved. The proposed rectifier operates in discontinuous conduction mode, and the current-loop circuit is hence not needed. In addition, only a single switch is used in the rectifier to simplify the control circuit design. A simple translation method to have the positive output voltage in the Cuk converter is presented in the rectifier to reduce the component counts and the cost. The operational principles, steady-state analysis, and design procedure of the proposed rectifier are addressed in detail in this paper. Simulation and experimental results obtained from a 150-W rated prototype circuit with input of 90–130 Vrms, 60 Hz, and output of 48 Vdc have verified the validity of the proposed rectifier. In order to increase the output voltage levels and reduce the isolated dc sources, a symmetrical hybrid nine-level inverter for high-speed motor drive applications is presented in this paper. Each phase of this inverter is composed of a five-level dc/dc converter cell and an H-bridge cell. The dc/dc converter is operated at high frequency with low-voltage devices and the H-bridge is operated at fundamental frequency with high-voltage devices. The three phases are connected to a common dc-link and each drives an isolated winding of an open-winding motor. The operating principles and modulation method are introduced. A detailed analysis of the average currents through the flying capacitor and neutral point of the dc-link is presented and a capacitor voltage balancing method based on phase-shifted pulse-width modulation is proposed. Boost-derived hybrid converter (BDHC) is a single-stage converter that produces both dc and ac output voltages. The operation of BDHC under continuous conduction mode is satisfactory. However, the nonzero discontinuous conduction mode (NZ-DCM) and standalone ac operation restrict the stable operation of the converter. To mitigate these limitations, modified BDHC (MBDHC) is proposed in this paper. The main idea behind these changes is to redeem NZ-DCM by forced continuous conduction mode (FCM). The adverse effect of NZ-DCM in a BDHC is analyzed in terms of ac output voltage total harmonic distortion, and dc output voltage ripple. This analysis is further extended for MBDHC to highlight the benefits of FCM. Moreover, for hybrid loads, the efficiency of MBDHC is compared with its counterpart BDHC and cascaded boost inverter. This paper discusses a new circuit configuration and a new control method for a single-phase ac–dc converter with power factor (P.F.) correction and a power pulsation decoupling function. The proposed converter can achieve low total harmonic distortion (THD) on the input current and the power pulsation decoupling function between the input and output sides, which allows low output voltage ripple even on a small output energy buffer at the same time using an active buffer. Therefore, the proposed converter does not require large smoothing capacitors or large smoothing inductors. The buffering energy is stored by a small capacitor, which controls the variation of the capacitor voltage through the active buffer. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed converter are investigated experimentally. The experimental results reveal that the input current THD is 1.44%, the rate of the output voltage ripple is 6.33%, and the input P.F. is over 99%. This paper proposes an electronic driver for public lighting systems. The input stage is based on the integration of two flyback converters with different polarities, in order to avoid the use of the input diode bridge rectifying stage. The output stage is a boost converter with an output current control. The proposed circuit is introduced and analyzed, and a design example for a 50-W light-emitting diode lamp is presented. The most relevant simulation and experimental results are also shown, in order to validate the idea. A comparison in terms of efficiency for the input stage is carried out between the proposed topology and the conventional flyback converter, showing an efficiency enhancement in the proposed converter. However, the most important advantage of the proposed converter is outlined in the final part of this paper. This advantage comes from the avoidance of the input diode bridge, thus enabling the bidirectional power flow at the input stage. Therefore, the topology can be used to deliver energy into the power grid. In recent lighting applications, the use of micro renewable generators in lighting points has made the use of special electronics to handle the energy flows in the ballast necessary. Two new configurations of static ground power unit based on 5L active neutral point clamped (ANPC) and novel modular 9L-ANPC converter are proposed. First, a new level shifted phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation (LS-PSC-PWM) switching method for the 5L-ANPC converter is defined. By utilizing the proposed method, total harmonic distortion of output voltage is reduced in comparison with traditional PSC-PWM switching method. Then, a novel modular 9L-ANPC multilevel converter and its suggested modulation method is proposed in this paper. In comparison with traditional 9L-ANPC converter, the main advantages of proposed modular 9L-ANPC converter are halving the applied voltages on flying capacitors (FC), reduced number of FCs, and self-balancing of FCs, which is provided by suggested switching method. This results in reduction of the size and cost of converter, and makes it more feasible and reliable. Furthermore, inductance reduction of output LC filter enhances static ground power unit dynamic performances. A multilevel boost power factor correction (PFC) rectifier is presented in this paper controlled by cascaded controller and multicarrier pulse width modulation technique. The presented topology has less active semiconductor switches compared to similar ones reducing the number of required gate drives that would shrink the manufactured box significantly. A simple controller has been implemented on the studied converter to generate a constant voltage at the output while generating a five-level voltage waveform at the input without connecting the load to the neutral point of the dc bus capacitors. Multicarrier pulse-width modulation technique has been used to produce switching pulses from control signal at a fixed switching frequency. Multilevel voltage waveform harmonics has been analyzed comprehensively which affects the harmonic contents of input current and the size of required filters directly. Full experimental results confirm the good dynamic performance of the proposed five-level PFC boost rectifier in delivering power from ac grid to the dc loads while correcting the power factor at the ac side as well as reducing the current harmonics remarkably. This paper proposes an isolated universal-link ac–ac power converter suitable for grid connection. The proposed power converter can have multiple ports to connect various loads or electric energy sources, and the configuration can be arranged according to the situation. The proposed power converter does not need to employ the large interface inductor at input side and the huge electrolytic capacitor at dc link. Moreover, it utilizes high-frequency transformers for the galvanic isolation instead of bulky line-frequency transformers. These characteristics of the proposed power converter result in the reduction of the system volume and weight remarkably. The proposed power converter is the modular structure, and an H-bridge works as a basic module of the converter. By stacking the modules, the power converter can be adapted to the high-voltage grid and the various types of loads and/or sources. This paper addresses the structure of the proposed power converter and the fundamental principle of power flow. This paper proposes a current-fed non-isolated soft-switching bidirectional dc/dc converter for interfacing energy storage to dc microgrid. The proposed converter employs a current-fed half-bridge boost converter at front-end followed by an LCL resonant circuit to aid in soft-switching of semiconductor devices. A voltage doubler at output is selected to enhance the gain by $2 \times $. The LCL resonant circuit also adds a suitable voltage gain. Therefore, the topology offers overall high voltage gain without transformer or large number of multiplier circuits. For buck operation, high side voltage is first divided by half with capacitor divider to gain higher stepdown ratio. Converter operates at high switching frequency to realize merits of reduced magnetics and filters. Zero voltage turn-on is achieved for all switches and zero current turn-on and turn-off is achieved for all diodes for both buck/boost operation. Voltage across switches and diode is clamped naturally without any external snubber circuit. Detailed analysis and design have been proposed. A proof-of-concept experimental prototype rated at 350 W has been designed, developed, and tested in the laboratory to demonstrate the performance and validate the claims of the converter for wide load variation. This paper proposes three dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) topologies. Such configurations are able to compensate voltage sags/swells in three-phase four-wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. The proposed systems use two independent dc links. Proposed configurations present advantages in terms of switch blocking voltages and consequently lower dc-link voltage rating. The complete control system, including the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique, is developed, and comparisons between the proposed configurations and a conventional one are performed. This paper proposes a new vector-based dead-time compensation method for three-level T-type converters. The origins and effects of the dead-time voltage errors are analyzed in detail for different switching commutations and load conditions. In order to eliminate the dead-time distortion in each phase, a dead-time error voltage vector is introduced to adjust the reference voltage vector depending on load current polarity. The proposed vector-based dead-time compensation scheme has several advantages. First, it can be applied to multilevel converters with any number of voltage levels using any modulation schemes. Second, the pulse loss issue which is common in conventional pulse-based compensation strategies can be eliminated. In addition, the pulse saturation can be mitigated by operating the converters in overmodulation regions. This paper presents the performance analysis and comparison of two types of bidirectional dc–dc converters—cascaded buck–boost capacitor in the middle and cascaded buck–boost inductor in the middle for use in plug-in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The comparison of the two converters is based on device requirements, rating of switches and components, control strategy, and performance. Each of the converter topologies has some advantages over the other in certain aspects. Efficiency analysis has been carried out for specific scenarios in vehicle applications. Fault-tolerant permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) drives for wind turbine applications play a major role in improving reliability and availability levels, since power converters are very prone to fail. In this paper, a fault-tolerant converter with the ability to handle power switch open-circuit faults is addressed. The main concern of the proposed converter topology is the minimization of the hardware requirements, leading to a low increase of the system cost. First, the employed fault diagnostic technique does not require additional measurements, nor high computational effort. Secondly, the circuit topology reconfiguration implies a minimum number of extra components as well as minimal oversizing of the standard ones. Accordingly, a four-switch three-phase converter with the dc bus midpoint connected to the transformer neutral point and a three-switch three-phase rectifier are adopted for post-fault operation of the grid- and PMSG-side converters, respectively. Vector control strategies are proposed for both converters under analysis, focusing the issues of capacitor voltages balancing and torque ripple minimization. This paper presents a novel topology for a nonisolated bidirectional dc–dc converter with soft-switching capabilities, which usually operates at a zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) condition. A nonisolated dc–dc converter combines a buck converter and a backward boost converter into one circuit, which consists of a half-bridge power switch, an inductor, and capacitors. In order to realize ZVS conditions, the proposed converter utilizes a coupled inductor, a small independent inductor, and auxiliary switches and diodes. Due to ZVS, switching stress on switch components is reduced, and the reverse recovery problem of MOSFET antiparallel body diodes is also eliminated. Moreover, the operating modes of the proposed converter can be switched between a ZVS mode and a conventional hard-switching mode on the basis of load conditions. The soft-switching mode is for heavy loads, and the hard-switching mode is for light-load conditions. Therefore, the highest efficiency can be obtained at almost all load ranges. In this paper, an average switch model approach to the power stage modeling, feedback compensation network design, and dynamic analysis of power factor correction (PFC) boost converters with ripple steering is presented. The model is expressed by the derivation of power stage transfer functions for a conventional boost converter and then followed by the derivation of the power stage transfer functions for a boost converter with ripple steering. A detailed design procedure and comparison of both voltage and current feedback loops are given in a conventional PFC boost converter and boost converter with ripple steering. Experimental and simulation results of a prototype boost converter converting universal ac input voltage to 400 V dc at 1.6 kW are given to verify the proof of concept and analytical work reported. Most of the ac–ac converters used in home appliances are based on single-output dc-link inverters, which provide a cost-effective and straightforward solution. However, a two-stage power conversion decreases power density and efficiency. A direct ac–ac conversion has been thoroughly studied in the past. Nevertheless, the complex control scheme and higher cost have prevented it from being used in cost-oriented applications, such as home appliances. This paper proposes a direct ac–ac conversion scheme by means of a multiple-output resonant matrix converter applied to multiple inductive load systems. The proposed topology reduces significantly the number of devices and complexity, leading to an efficient, versatile, and cost-effective solution. This paper presents a quasi-resonant technique for multilevel modular switched-capacitor dc–dc converter (MMSCC) to achieve zero-current switching (ZCS) without increasing cost and sacrificing reliability. This ZCS-MMSCC employs stray inductance distributed in the circuit as the resonant inductor to resonate with the capacitor and provide low dv/dt and di/dt switching transition for the device. The ZCS-MMSCC does not utilize any additional components to achieve ZCS and meanwhile solves the current and voltage spike problem during the switching transition, thus leading to reliable and high-efficiency advantages over traditional MMSCC. Furthermore, the ZCS-MMSCC reduces the capacitance needed in the circuit to attain high efficiency. In this case, the bulky capacitor bank with high capacitance in a traditional MMSCC to reduce voltage difference and achieve high efficiency is no longer necessary. A 150-W four-level ZCS-MMSCC prototype has been built.
