Soft-switching ac-link universal power converters, also called partial resonant converters and ac-link buck–boost converters, have received noticeable attention during the last few years. In these converters, each of the inputs and outputs can be dc, single-phase ac, or multiphase ac; therefore, they can be used for dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, or ac–ac power conversion systems. The soft-switching ac-link universal power converters are compact, reliable, and expected to offer longer lifetime compared with the other types of converters. However, they require more switches, which make the control process more involved. The sparse ac-link buck–boost converters were proposed to partially solve this problem. The sparse configuration reduces the number of switches from 24 to 20 in a three-phase ac–ac configuration. This paper proposes a modified configuration, which further reduces the number of switches without changing the principles of operation. This converter, which is named ultrasparse ac-link buck–boost converter, reduces the number of switches from 24 to 16, in a three-phase ac-to-ac case, and from 20 to 10, in a dc-to-three-phase-ac configuration. The proposed converter is applicable to systems with unidirectional flow of power, such as PV and wind power generation systems. This converter is expected to offer higher reliability compared with the original converter and higher reliability and efficiency compared with the sparse configuration. Another important feature of this configuration is that it can be fabricated by insulated-gate bipolar transistor modules, which are more compact and more cost effective compared with discrete devices. Multilevel converters are a proven solution for medium-voltage and high-power applications, including renewable energy conversion. Developing 6.6-kV converters is a key goal for the wind turbines industry. Considering the voltage rating of commercially available semiconductors, five-level converters are necessary to reach 6.6 kV. The five-level active neutral-point-clamped converter (5L-ANPC) is one of the most advantageous topologies among five-level multilevel converters. This paper presents a new 5L-ANPC topology that overcomes the features of the previously employed 5L-ANPC topology. Along this paper, the properties and working principle of this new 5L-ANPC are explained. Finally, the validity of the new converter is validated via simulation and experimental results. This paper presents a novel dc–dc converter configuration, which successfully integrates two technologies, including a switched capacitor and a switched coupled inductor, into one converter. By adopting a coupled inductor to charge a switched capacitor, the voltage gain can be effectively increased, and the turns ratio of the coupled inductor can be also reduced. Not only lower conduction losses but also higher power conversion efficiency is benefited from a lower part count and lower turns ratios. The proposed converter is simply composed of six components, which can be further derived to varied converters for different purposes, such as a bidirectional converter. The operating principle and steady-state analysis are discussed in this paper. A 250-W laboratory hardware prototype is completed and verified. The voltage gain is up to 11. This paper proposes a vector control strategy for independent control of two permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) using a single four-leg inverter (4LI). An expanded two-arm modulation to obtain a balanced three-phase output voltage is described. This paper also proposes a method to compensate for the fluctuations in the neutral point voltage of two split capacitors in the dc link. This paper proposes a single-stage high-power-factor (HPF) LED driver with coupled inductors for street-lighting applications. The presented LED driver integrates a dual buck–boost power-factor-correction (PFC) ac–dc converter with coupled inductors and a half-bridge-type $LLC$ dc–dc resonant converter into a single-stage-conversion circuit topology. The coupled inductors inside the dual buck–boost converter subcircuit are designed to be operated in the discontinuous-conduction mode for obtaining high power-factor (PF). The half-bridge-type $LLC$ resonant converter is designed for achieving soft-switching on two power switches and output rectifier diodes, in order to reduce their switching losses. This paper develops and implements a cost-effective driver for powering a 144-W-rated LED street-lighting module with input utility-line voltage ranging from 100 to 120 V. The tested prototype yields satisfying experimental results, including high circuit efficiency ( $>$ 89.5%), low input-current total-harmonic distortion ( $<$ 5.5%), high PF ( $>$ 0.99), low output-voltage ripple ( $<$ 7.5%), and low output-current ripple ( $<$ 5%), thus demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed LED driver. This paper presents a high-power-density high-power-factor GaN-based two-stage electrolytic-free offline LED driver. The LED driver achieves high power density through the use of a hybrid film–ceramic stacked switched capacitor (SSC) energy buffer, and a comprehensive optimization methodology that evaluates various converter topologies and designs and minimizes overall system volume while maintaining high efficiency. Based on this optimization approach, a totem-pole bridgeless boost power factor correction (PFC) converter is selected for the first stage, while a stacked-input isolated LLC dc–dc converter is selected for the second stage. The optimization procedure also minimizes the passive volume of the SSC energy buffer incorporating the volumetric energy density of commercially available capacitors. The optimized SSC energy buffer utilized in the proposed LED driver has 50% less passive volume than a capacitor-only solution. A 600-W prototype LED driver designed using the proposed approach for universal input voltage ${{(90}}-{ 305 \ \text{V}}_{{\text{rms}}})$ and 24-V output voltage is built and tested. This paper reports an elegant approach to address two major challenges of transformerless grid-connected microinverters, common-mode earth leakage current and double-frequency power pulsation across the photovoltaic (PV) terminal. The proposed solution uses an embedded decoupling capacitor in a doubly grounded boost–buck ( $\acute{\mathrm{C}}$ uk) derived topology. An intelligent switching scheme ensures that a large swing of the decoupling capacitor voltage is easily accommodated. Thus, film capacitors can be used instead of electrolytic capacitors, which helps increase equipment lifetime. In this paper, a modified single-phase current source inverter (CSI) with improved multiloop control is proposed for a transformerless grid–photovoltaic interface application. A split capacitor arrangement with the middle point connected to the grid neutral and a common mode choke are used to modify the conventional CSI structure to attenuate the ground leakage current. The proposed control method permits the use of reduced value of dc side inductor by maintaining the quality of the grid current as if a high value of input inductor is used. Furthermore, virtual resistance damping is incorporated in the control loop to reduce the effect of LC resonance without compromising the efficiency, thus proving the feasibility of using CSI for the grid interface. Rigorous study, analysis, and validation of the modified CSI structure with the proposed control technique are carried out with exhaustive simulations and experiments. This paper proposes a new high-gain soft-switching dc–dc topology based on a switched inductor boost converter (SIBC). A conventional SIBC as a high gain boost topology has the issues of high conduction loss in switching diodes and high switching loss in the main switches. Also, it has severe electromagnetic interference (EMI) issue due to high-frequency ringing formed by parasitic inductance and diode junction capacitors. The new topology is derived with the objective of achieving zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn on of the main switch. Instead of adding extra active clamp zero voltage transition (ZVT) path at the switching node, the proposed topology augments the auxiliary ZVT path to the switching diode path. This is achieved by replacing the switching diodes with synchronous switches. The new topology can achieve soft switching for all the switches and alleviate the EMI issue. All the diodes achieve zero current switching (ZCS) turn off without reverse recovery. Auxiliary switches have ZCS turn on and ZVS turn off, and the main switches have ZVS turn on. The soft-switching SIBC also reduces the conduction loss in the switching diodes. A numerical simulation in PLECS and a prototype hardware are built corresponding to a micro-inverter application with 100 kHz switching frequency. In this paper, a three-phase three-switch three-level boost (Vienna) type pulse-width modulation rectifier is proposed as an active front-end power factor correction (PFC) rectifier for power quality improvement in telecom load. A sensorless voltage control technique is proposed and it does not rely on any input voltage information results in reliable and robust operation. A brief description on the principle of operation and the most advantageous modulation method of the proposed system are discussed. The feasible switching states are identified for the proposed active front-end converter resulting in reduced switching stress and dc ripples. A triangular carrier based control logic is applied and the input current reaches sinusoidal shape without the need of sensing the input voltage. The detailed analysis of front-end PFC converter is carried out by equivalent circuit analysis. Also, the complete loss and efficiency calculation of the converter is explicitly carried out with the help of hardware design guidelines. The performance of the proposed system and its capability of operating satisfactorily in the event of failure of one phase of the mains is verified through MATLAB Simulation, and the results obtained are presented. The experimental setup rated for 9 kW is developed in the laboratory to validate the simulation results. This paper presents a reverse mapping based space vector pulse-width modulation strategy for five- and seven-level diode-clamped multilevel inverters. In this method, the space vector is expressed as a sum of a contender vector and an error vector. Here, the actual sector, which contains the tip of the reference space vector, needs not to be found. The vector nearest to the reference space vector is the contender vector. By calculating the vector difference of the contender vector from the reference vector, the error vector is determined. Using translation method, the error vector is translated to the origin of space vector diagram. There will be (n–1) steps in space vector diagram for an n-level inverter. As the error vector amplitude will be less than one step of the space vector diagram, the two-level space vector method can be applied. To obtain a vector that is very close to the reference vector, the determined switching states can be added to the contender vector. This technique can be extended to any n-level multilevel inverter. The performance of five-level and seven-level diode-clamped multilevel inverters is presented using MATLAB/Simulink. The performance of inverters is evaluated by using induction motor load. Space vector modulation (SVM) is a widely used method for multilevel inverters. Most of the SVM methods are nearest three vector (N3V) based schemes. Therefore, several researchers have proposed advanced implementation algorithms with reduced complexity for N3V methods. However, topologies like neutral point (NP) clamped inverter (NPCI) require some distinctive methods (called as non-N3V methods) to balance NP voltage for high modulation index and low power factor operations. Currently, the existing non-N3V methods exercise highly complex algorithms for duty ratio calculation and subtriangle identification. This paper presents a new approach, suitable for both N3V and non-N3V methods, with reduced implementation complexity. The proposed algorithm is based on an equivalent two-level space vector diagram and does not require any trigonometry, coordinate transformation, or volt-second balance solution. Unlike other carrier-based methods, it can change the switching sequence as well as the duration of redundant vectors. Moreover, the proposed approach does not require extra steps for implementing hybrid modulation and it can also be extended to multilevel topologies. One N3V, two non-N3V, and hybrid methods are developed using the proposed modulation algorithm, and are compared in detail. In this paper, a hybrid bidirectional dc–dc converter is presented, which is a combination of a switched-capacitor converter and an inductor-based converter with low component counts. The input current ripple and peak charging current are small with the help of the inductor. The proposed converter is applicable in the battery charge/discharge systems, such as the distributed renewable energy systems, battery equalizer, auxiliary power supplies, traction drive system, and dual-voltage automotive systems based in new electrical architecture concept, where common ground is not required and within the voltage-gain range of 2–6. A comprehensive analysis of the steady-state operation, small-signal model, and component stress is given. The comparison with an alternative topology shows the advantages of low component counts, low total capacitor voltage stress, low inductor current, and low total active switch stress for the 42/14 V voltage level. This paper presents a single-stage light-emitting diode (LED) driver based on a bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converter and a half-bridge CLCL resonant converter for street lighting applications. The proposed single-stage topology integrates the PFC converter and the CLCL resonant converter by sharing active power switches. The bridgeless PFC converter adopts two buck–boost circuits operating in discontinuous-conduction mode to achieve input-current shaping. It uses two diodes instead of a rectifier bridge to reduce the power loss caused by the diodes. Owing to its superior soft-switching characteristics, the CLCL resonant converter is used. The proposed LED driver has superior features, such as high efficiency, near unity power factor, low total harmonic distortion, and relatively few diodes. This paper presents a variable switching point predictive current control (VSP $^2$CC) for the quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). The proposed VSP $^2$CC aims to remove the output current error on the ac side, as well as the inductor current and capacitor voltage errors of the quasi-Z-source network on the dc side of the converter. Unlike the previously presented direct model predictive control (MPC) strategies for the qZSI, the proposed control scheme can directly apply the switching signals not only at the discrete time instants, but at any time instant within the sampling interval. Consequently, the shoot-through state can be applied for a shorter time than the sampling interval, resulting in lower output and inductor currents ripples. Experimental results based on field programmable gate array are provided to verify the effectiveness of the introduced control method. A trend for low-power conversion system is to integrate every component to a single chip. Magnetic component has been the key to determine the power density of the integrated switching power converter. In this paper, a hybrid resonant buck-type converter with an ultracompact custom-designed coupled inductor is presented for low-power integrated on-chip applications. This converter achieves zero-voltage switching for the high-side switch and near zero-voltage zero-current switching for low-side and auxiliary switches. The soft-switching condition allows the circuit operating at high switching frequencies. An ultracompact planar coupled inductor with a dimension of 5.25 mm × 1.95 mm × 3.86 mm is designed and customized for future integrated on-chip applications. The high-power density of this magnetics component is achieved by high switching frequency and optimized printed circuit board (PCB) windings design. A hardware prototype with 24 to 60-V input and 3.3 to 5-V, 3-A output operating at 2–3 MHz is presented to verify the circuit operation. Cascaded bidirectional dc–ac converters are commonly used in uninterruptible power supply applications and battery chargers for electric vehicles. Power conversion units for such applications employ a large electrolytic capacitor at high-voltage dc bus, which not only reduces the lifetime but also adds to the weight of the converter. In this paper, a novel bidirectional dual active bridge cascaded three-phase converter (DABCC) with six-pulse dc link is proposed. Also, a new closed-loop control scheme to implement the six-pulse modulation (SPM) technique in DABCC is proposed. The advantages of the proposed control scheme in DABCC are that the electrolytic capacitor is eliminated and is replaced with a low-value film capacitor resulting in increased reliability, compactness, and reduced cost. SPM technique also increases the dc bus utilization and decreases the inverter average switching frequency to 33% when compared with the conventional sine pulse-width modulation (SPWM). Harmonic components introduced in the pole voltages of the SPM-modulated DABCC due to inverter dead time are analyzed, and a resonant controller is designed to mitigate them. Also, root mean square current stress for high-voltage dc-link capacitor is studied, and it is shown that the capacitor requirement for SPM modulation is lower than the conventional SPWM. A new zero-voltage switching full-bridge dc–dc converter for battery charging is proposed in this paper. The proposed isolated dc–dc converter is used for the dc–dc conversion stage of the electric vehicle charger. The primary switches in dc–dc converter turn-on at zero voltage over the battery-charging range with the help of passive auxiliary circuit. The diode clamping circuit on the primary side minimizes the severity of voltage spikes across the secondary rectifier diodes, which are commonly present in conventional full-bridge dc–dc converters. The main switches are controlled with an asymmetrical pulse-width modulation (APWM) technique resulting in higher efficiency. APWM reduces the current stress of the main switches and the circulating losses compared with the conventional phase-shift modulation method by controlling the auxiliary inductor current over the entire operating range of the proposed converter. The steady-state analysis of auxiliary circuit and its design considerations are discussed in detail. A 100-kHz 1.2-kW full-bridge dc–dc converter prototype is developed. In this paper, a robust voltage control is designed for a floating interleaved boost converter with high voltage gain. The proposed controller has an inner loop based on super-twisting sliding mode algorithm, which has continuous control signal and the sliding surface is defined for the inductor current. The reference current value is generated by active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) algorithm in the outer loop, based on the output voltage error. The stability of the sliding mode inner loop and the ADRC outer loop are proven using Lyapunov stability theorem and Routh–Hurwitz criteria, respectively. High-voltage wide bandgap semiconductor devices such as the 15 kV SiC mosfet have attracted great attention because of their potential applications in high-voltage and high-frequency power converters. However, these devices are not commercially available at the moment, and their high cost due to expensive material growth and fabrication may limit their widespread adoption in the future. In this paper, a 15-kV 40-A SiC three-terminal power switch, the Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) supercascode, is reported for the first time, which is based on a series connection of 1.2-kV SiC power devices. Compared with the monolithic 15-kV SiC mosfet, the FREEDM supercascode demonstrates obvious advantages in cost and thermal conductivity. The design and voltage-balancing mechanism of the FREEDM supercascode are introduced, and the performance including the voltage balancing, conduction characteristics over a wide range of temperatures, and dynamic switching performance, is analyzed. The FREEDM supercascode's low cost and excellent thermal dissipation capability will facilitate early applications of SiC in very high voltage and high frequency power converters. This paper proposes a new nine-level inverter for medium- and high-power applications. The proposed topology comprises of a three-level (3L) active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter connected in series with a floating capacitor (FC) fed H-bridge. Besides, two additional switches operating at line frequency are appended across the dc link of the 3L ANPC structure. Compared with conventional hybrid cascaded inverters, the primary advantage of this addition is doubling of the resulting root mean square output voltage. This amelioration is achieved while preserving the standard 3L ANPC and H-bridge structures with minimum topological modification. A simple logic-gate-based voltage balancing scheme is developed to regulate the FC voltage. The proposed voltage balancing method is independent of load power factor, inverter modulation index, and can balance the voltage across FC instantaneously. The step-by-step formulation of logical expressions for the generation of gating pulses is deliberated in detail and can be generalized for any $n$-level inverter. Further, simulation results as well as the experimental measurements obtained from the laboratory prototype are presented to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed configuration. Transformer-less grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems face the challenge of keeping low leakage current due to their nonisolation configurations. To better attenuate the leakage current in the single-phase systems, a few neutral-point-clamped (NPC) topologies have been proposed. This paper further proposes an active NPC method by only employing one additional switch to connect the midpoint dc link and the freewheeling circuit of traditional single-phase PV inverters. After exploring the operational principles of freewheeling circuits, the construction method and the implementation of active NPC circuits in transformer-less single-phase inverters are elaborated in detail. Since only the leakage current flows through the additional NPC switch, the presented single-phase NPC inverters could still maintain the high operational efficiency with the further attenuated leakage current. This paper aims at the design and development of an efficient photovoltaic (PV) array powered switched reluctance motor (SRM) driven pump utilizing a dual supply buck–boost converter. The buck–boost converter, having dual supply, is used as an intermediate dc–dc power conditioning stage between PV array and SRM-pump. To optimize the power of the PV array and to provide soft starting to the SRM drive are the two major concerns of this converter. It also provides voltage balancing of split capacitors, owing to which there is considerable reduction in torque ripple and the required size of it. Moreover, the continuous conduction mode operation of dual supply dc–dc converter minimizes current and voltage stresses on converter indices and reduced electromagnetic interference. The electronic commutation of the SRM drive at fundamental frequency offers reduced switching losses in the midpoint converter and, therefore, considerable enhancement in the efficiency of the proposed system. A dwell angle self-starting control algorithm for a four-phase 8/6 SRM is also implemented in the proposed system. Soft-switching techniques have become very attractive in bidirectional grid-tie dc–ac converters utilizing high-frequency link transformers for galvanic isolation. This paper presents a new pulse-width modulation (PWM) switching technique for controlling a bidirectional isolated dc–ac–ac converter along with its soft-switching method. The proposed PWM technique has the ability to control the input dc current and to inject a sinusoidal three-phase current to the grid at unity power factor. In the first stage, an H-bridge converter is used to convert the dc voltage to a high-frequency square-wave single-phase voltage. In the second stage, a matrix converter is used to convert the high-frequency voltage waveform to conventional three-phase voltage synchronized with the grid. Therefore, a single-phase high-frequency transformer is used to link the H-bridge output voltage to the matrix converter input voltage. The proposed soft-switching technique is achieved by connecting shunt ceramic capacitors across all converter switches. The mathematical model and the circuit operation for soft-switching are presented along with the voltage controllable limits. This paper proposes a control method to balance capacitor voltages in a four-switch single-stage two-phase-switched-reluctance motor drive with integrated power factor correction during startup and at low speeds. Initial alignment process is incorporated for switched-reluctance machine before startup. However, the phase currents are unbalanced during that time. This will cause overvoltage on dc capacitors in split-ac configuration leadings to their failure. This problem also exists when the motor speed is very low, as observed in the startup process of compressors. Based on a unified model, an effective control method is proposed to eliminate the voltage difference between the capacitors. This method does not require any additional circuits or components. In order to increase the output voltage levels and reduce the isolated dc sources, a symmetrical hybrid nine-level inverter for high-speed motor drive applications is presented in this paper. Each phase of this inverter is composed of a five-level dc/dc converter cell and an H-bridge cell. The dc/dc converter is operated at high frequency with low-voltage devices and the H-bridge is operated at fundamental frequency with high-voltage devices. The three phases are connected to a common dc-link and each drives an isolated winding of an open-winding motor. The operating principles and modulation method are introduced. A detailed analysis of the average currents through the flying capacitor and neutral point of the dc-link is presented and a capacitor voltage balancing method based on phase-shifted pulse-width modulation is proposed. Boost-derived hybrid converter (BDHC) is a single-stage converter that produces both dc and ac output voltages. The operation of BDHC under continuous conduction mode is satisfactory. However, the nonzero discontinuous conduction mode (NZ-DCM) and standalone ac operation restrict the stable operation of the converter. To mitigate these limitations, modified BDHC (MBDHC) is proposed in this paper. The main idea behind these changes is to redeem NZ-DCM by forced continuous conduction mode (FCM). The adverse effect of NZ-DCM in a BDHC is analyzed in terms of ac output voltage total harmonic distortion, and dc output voltage ripple. This paper presents an optimized topology for a \text3-\phi three-level inverter with complete elimination of common-mode voltage (CMV). The proposed multilevel inverter (MLI) configuration is realized by modifying a T-structure \text3-\phi inverter. The proposed configuration is an optimized solution with respect to the pulse-width modulation strategy used for CMV elimination. The given three-level inverter structure uses only 16 power semiconductor switches, which is much lower than the existing configurations. A reduced number of power semiconductor devices results in a diminished number of driver circuits, less installation space, and low cost. Further, due to the complete elimination of CMV, the proposed MLI is free from issues such as electromagnetic interference and leakage current with a reduction in filter requirement. The presented topology is also compared with other existing topologies to prove its advantage. It is an optimized solution with respect to the dc bus voltage requirement and the total voltage rating of the devices or the components used in the system. A novel hybrid five-level voltage-source converter for high-efficiency applications is investigated in this paper. Compared with traditional multilevel converters, this hybrid multilevel converter generates desired staircase voltage levels with a reduced number of power devices and isolated drivers at higher voltage levels. It has redundant switching state combinations in hybrid multilevel converter, which makes it easy to balance flying capacitor voltages and realize fault-tolerant operation. A voltage-balancing control strategy based on switching state redundancies is presented for the hybrid multilevel converter to generate desired levels and also keep voltage balance of flying capacitors at the same time. The performance of the hybrid multilevel converter under various operating conditions is investigated in MATLAB/Simulink. This paper proposes a multilevel shunt active power filter (SAPF) to deal with either harmonic current compensation or reactive power compensation. Such a device can reduce the harmonic distortion at the grid currents provided by nonlinear loads located in stiff systems. The proposed SAPF is based on three-phase bridge converters connected to cascaded single-phase transformers. The transformer arrangement permits the compensator to use a single dc-link unit, which simplifies the control strategy and the number of sensors. The multilevel waveforms are generated by using a suitable pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy associated with the transformer turns ratio. Modularity and simple maintenance make the proposed SAPF an attractive solution compared with some conventional configurations. The model, the PWM technique, and the control strategy are presented, as well as studies considering harmonic distortion and semiconductor losses estimation. In recent years, a three-level T-type inverter has attracted considerable attention due to its advantages, such as simple structure and higher efficiency. However, the reliability of a three-level T-type inverter is particularly important as increased power switches are used. Therefore, a fault-tolerant three-level T-type inverter is proposed in this paper. Fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control strategies for power switches both in half-bridge and neutral-point bridge are investigated. Under fault-tolerant operation, redundant fourth-leg is used to balance neutral-point voltage and the low-frequency voltage oscillation is eliminated completely. The fault ride-through capability and high-quality output waveforms can be obtained. Three-phase inverters in uninterrupted power supply, electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles use an intermediate dc-link electrolytic capacitor, which has reliability issues and is one prominent cause of inverter failure and limited life. The large volume of an electrolytic capacitor increases the size and cost of the system. Recent research on electrolytic capacitorless inverters using six-pulse modulation technique along with high-frequency power conversion has attempted to address this issue. However, closed-loop operation and control has some issues due to capacitorless dc-link. In this paper, closed-loop operation, design, and implementation of an electrolytic capacitorless inverter is presented. A proof-of-concept 1-kW hardware prototype has been built and tested in a laboratory under different loading conditions. In total, 98% rated efficiency of the inverter is obtained with total harmonic distortion within 2%. This paper discusses a new circuit configuration and a new control method for a single-phase ac–dc converter with power factor (P.F.) correction and a power pulsation decoupling function. The proposed converter can achieve low total harmonic distortion (THD) on the input current and the power pulsation decoupling function between the input and output sides, which allows low output voltage ripple even on a small output energy buffer at the same time using an active buffer. Therefore, the proposed converter does not require large smoothing capacitors or large smoothing inductors. The buffering energy is stored by a small capacitor, which controls the variation of the capacitor voltage through the active buffer. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed converter are investigated experimentally. The experimental results reveal that the input current THD is 1.44%, the rate of the output voltage ripple is 6.33%, and the input P.F. is over 99%. The stacked switched capacitor (SSC) energy buffer is a recently proposed architecture for buffering energy between single-phase alternating and direct current. When used with film capacitors, it can increase the life of grid-interfaced power converters by eliminating limited-life electrolytic capacitors while maintaining comparable energy density. This paper introduces an enhanced version of the bipolar SSC energy buffer that achieves higher effective energy density and round-trip efficiency while maintaining the same bus voltage ripple ratio as the original design. Furthermore, the enhanced buffer uses fewer capacitors and switches than the original design. The enhancement in performance is achieved by modifying the control and switching patterns of the buffer switches. A prototype enhanced SSC energy buffer, designed for a 320-V bus and a 135-W load, has been built and tested. The design methodology and experimental results for the enhanced SSC energy buffer are presented and compared with the original design. This paper also presents a comparison of unipolar and bipolar SSC energy buffers. It is shown that, although bipolar designs are superior in terms of effective energy density at low ripple ratios, unipolar designs can outperform bipolar designs at high ripple ratios. This paper proposes an electronic driver for public lighting systems. The input stage is based on the integration of two flyback converters with different polarities, in order to avoid the use of the input diode bridge rectifying stage. The output stage is a boost converter with an output current control. The proposed circuit is introduced and analyzed, and a design example for a 50-W light-emitting diode lamp is presented. The most relevant simulation and experimental results are also shown, in order to validate the idea. A comparison in terms of efficiency for the input stage is carried out between the proposed topology and the conventional flyback converter, showing an efficiency enhancement in the proposed converter. However, the most important advantage of the proposed converter is outlined in the final part of this paper. This advantage comes from the avoidance of the input diode bridge, thus enabling the bidirectional power flow at the input stage. Therefore, the topology can be used to deliver energy into the power grid. In recent lighting applications, the use of micro renewable generators in lighting points has made the use of special electronics to handle the energy flows in the ballast necessary. High-brightness light-emitting diodes (HB-LEDs) are becoming omnipresent across all aspects of illumination products, due to their incredible characteristics such as efficiency, reliability, long lifetime, controllability, etc. This paper proposes power conversion topologies to drive medium to high power HB-LEDs in three-phase power grids when these connections are available. For that reason, an evaluation of several drivers for medium to high power HB-LEDs in three-phase power grids is done. Moreover, a new topology is proposed, which complies with IEC 1000-3-2 Class C requirements, achieves high power factor, low total harmonic distortion, and the capability to have a flicker free behavior while disposing of the bulk capacitor and having galvanic isolation. The HB-LED driver is based on a modular approach with several cells working together with their inputs connected to the three-phase network and their outputs connected in parallel generating a dc output. Each one of these cells is a dc–dc converter operating as a loss free resistor. In order to validate the concept, a prototype has been built by the use of flyback converters operating in discontinuous conduction mode. Furthermore, it operates in the full range of the European three-phase line voltage, which varies between 380 and 420 V, and it supplies an output voltage of 48 V with maximum power of 90 W. This paper proposes and analyzes a new power electronics circuit topology for wireless inductive power transfer application using current-fed half-bridge converter with CCL-LC resonant network. The major focus is analysis and implementation of a new current-fed resonant topology with current-sharing and voltage doubling features. Generally, inductive power transfer circuits with current fed converter use parallel CL resonant tank to transfer power effectively through air gap. However, in medium power application, this topology suffers from a major limitation of high voltage stress across the inverter semiconductor devices owing to high reactive power consumed by loosely coupled coil. In proposed topology, this is mitigated by adding a capacitor in series with the coil developing series-parallel CCL tank. The power flow is controlled through variable frequency modulation. Soft-switching of the devices is obtained irrespective of the load current. For grid-to-vehicle or solar-to-vehicle, the converter is analyzed and detailed design procedure is illustrated. This paper presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of a method for fault prognosis for power electronics systems using an adaptive parameter identification approach. The adaptive parameter identifier uses a generalized gradient descent algorithm to compute real-time estimates of system parameters (e.g., capacitance, inductance, parasitic resistance) in arbitrary switching power electronics systems. These estimates can be used to monitor the overall health of a power electronics system and to predict when faults are more likely to occur. Moreover, the estimates can be used to tune control loops that rely on the system parameter values. The parameter identification algorithm is general in that it can be applied to a broad class of systems based on switching power converters. We present a real-time experimental validation of the proposed fault prognosis method on a 3 kW solar photovoltaic interleaved boost dc-dc converter system for tracking changes in passive component values. On-line condition monitoring is of paramount importance for multilevel power converters used in safety-critical applications. A novel on-line nonintrusive diagnostic method for detecting open-circuit switch faults in silicon carbide (SiC) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs)-based T-type multilevel converters is introduced in this paper. The principle of this method is based on monitoring the abnormal variations of the dc-bus neutral-point current in combination with the existing information on instantaneous switching states and phase currents. Advantages of this method include faster detection speed and simpler implementation compared to other existing diagnostic methods in the literature. Moreover, this diagnostic method is immune to the disturbances of inverter's dc-bus voltage unbalance and load unbalance. In this method, only one additional current sensor is required for measuring the dc-bus neutral-point current; therefore, the implementation cost is low. For the high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) power transmission system of offshore wind power, dc/dc converters are the potential solution to collect the power generated by off-shore wind farms to HVDC terminals. The converters operate with high-voltage gain, high efficiency, and fault tolerance over a wide range of operating conditions. In this paper, an isolated ultrahigh step-up dc/dc converter with a scalable modular structure is proposed for HVDC offshore wind power collection. A flyback-forward converter is employed as the power cell to form the expandable electrically isolated modular dc/dc converter. The duty ratio and phase-shift angle control are also developed for the proposed converter. Fault-tolerant characteristics of the converter are illustrated through the redundancy operation and fault-ride-through tests. Redundancy operation is designed to maintain high operation efficiency of the converters and fault-ride-through operation improves the converter reliability under harsh operating conditions. Analytical studies are carried out, and a 750-W prototype with three modular cells is built and experimentally tested to verify the performance of the proposed modular dc/dc converter. This paper presents multilevel ac–dc single-phase power conversion cells for applications in which the regenerative operation is either not required or prohibited. The ac primary power source is a single phase from a permanent magnet generator or from an electrical grid. The cells are composed of two h-bridges in cascade: 1) an unidirectional high-voltage h-bridge with two controlled switches; and 2) two power diodes, processing the active power, and a low-voltage h-bridge with four controlled switches and a floating capacitor. These cells can be part of multiphase systems, in which it is required one cell for each phase. Some examples of application for three-phase systems are given, exploring different ways of connection between the single-phase cells. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme for reducing the common-mode voltage (CMV) in the three-phase five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed, where only the 55 selected voltage vectors among the entire 125 that produce low values of the CMV are utilized. This PWM scheme can significantly reduce the CMV without the increase of switching losses and total harmonic distortion of the output voltages. With the 55 selected voltage vectors, the inverter can still operate up to the maximum modulation index. In addition, the capacitor voltages are controlled by redundant switches of the 5L-ANPC inverters. In this paper for power factor correction (PFC), a modified Landsman converter is introduced. The application is targeted for high-brightness (HB) projection application with brightness control for HB red–green–blue (HB-RGB) light-emitting diode (LED). A pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique is used for intensity control to achieve brightness control of the LED driver. The proposed PFC converter is used to feed a dual output flyback dc–dc converter that supplies power to the forced cooling unit and the LED module with galvanic isolation. The brightness control of LED is performed by synchronous buck converter. The modified Landsman converter operates in discontinuous output inductor current mode for PFC at universal ac mains. A prototype of the proposed LED driver is experimentally verified. The performance of proposed driver is evaluated at full and light-load condition for universal ac mains (90–265 V) over a full range of brightness. This paper presents a case study of a medium-voltage three-phase capacitor bank (CB) energization, based on an unsynchronized switching scheme using three independent pole vacuum switches simultaneously commanded. The motivations are cost reduction and simplification of the switching scheme. The maximum current and voltage peaks during transients caused by connection of CB with three independent pole switches or a three-phase mechanically coupled switch are compared. A probabilistic assessment for the overcurrents and overvoltages based on Monte Carlo simulation is also performed. In order to solve the problems caused by the pulsating current ripple of switching-mode power converters, a passive pulsating ripple canceling circuit (PPRCC) is proposed in this paper. The features of the proposed PPRCC include simple, modular structure, and high degree of design flexibility. By integrating the proposed PPRCC, an input current ripple-free flyback-type converter is adopted and analyzed as an example because of its comprehensive utilization in small power rating commercial products. In addition, the switch voltage spike of flyback converter can be suppressed by integrating the proposed PPRCC without using snubbers, it turns out that the efficiency can be further improved. The corresponding operating principle, steady-state analysis, and zero ripple design criteria of the proposed PPRCC are provided. Finally, a 100 W laboratory prototype is constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed principle. Experimental results show that the resulting peak-to-peak input current ripple is reduced by 96% and nearly 0.5% and 1.7% improvement in efficiency can be achieved by the proposed PPRCC, at 80 W and 100 W load conditions, respectively. This paper presents the analysis and the validation of the large-signals model of a new five-level T-type unidirectional three-phase rectifier topology known as 5L T-RECT. Proposed modeling approach is mainly based on the well-known state-space averaging technique. According to this technique, the averaging process is applied across one pulse width modulation sampling period T_S , thus resulting in the basic 5L T-RECT mathematical model. Consequently, the ac–dc steady-state operation is analyzed through the achieved model. The large-signals model of the 5L T-RECT has been verified by means of the direct comparison with the converter full digital-switching model, realized in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. In LLC-based onboard battery charging architectures used in plug-in electric vehicles (PEV), the dc link voltage can be actively regulated to follow the battery pack voltage so that the LLC converter can operate in proximity of resonant frequency and achieve high efficiencies over the wide range of battery pack voltage. However, conventional boost-type power factor correction (PFC) converters are unable to provide ultrawide dc link voltages since their output voltages should always be larger than their input voltages. This paper proposes a Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based onboard PEV charger using single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) PFC converter followed by an isolated LLC resonant converter. With the proposed charger architecture, the SEPIC PFC converter is able to provide an ultrawide range for dc link voltage, and consequently enhance the efficiency of the LLC stage by ensuring operation in proximity of resonant frequency. A 1-kW SiC-based prototype is designed to validate the proposed idea. The experimental result shows that the SEPIC PFC converter achieves unity power factor, 2.72% total harmonic distortion, and 95.3% peak conversion efficiency. The LLC converter achieves 97.1% peak efficiency and always demonstrates a very high efficiency across the ultrawide dc-link voltage range.
