In this paper, the switching cell concept is extended to isolated ac–ac converters, and a highly reliable double step-down ac–ac converter is proposed with high-frequency transformer (HFT) isolation. By using the switching cell structure and coupled inductors, the proposed converter has no commutation problem as it is immune from both short-circuit and open-circuit problems, even when all the switches are turned on or turned off, simultaneously. Therefore, it does not require pulse width modulation dead times along with bulky and lossy RC snubbers or voltage-sensing circuitry to implement soft-commutation strategies, resulting in high reliability and high quality output waveforms. The HFT in the proposed converter provides electrical isolation and safety which is required in applications such as dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), solid-state transformer (SST), etc., without the need for external bulky line frequency transformer. Moreover, all the passive components experience twice the switching frequency; therefore, their size can be reduced. The proposed converter is very suitable for application as DVR, to compensate both voltage sags and swells, owing to its ability to provide both inverting and noninverting outputs. A detailed theoretical analysis and operation of the proposed ac–ac converter are provided, and its applications as DVR and SST are also discussed. This paper identifies the characteristics of a current source inverter operating in discontinuous conduction mode, and proposes a new multiobjective pulse-width modulation (PWM) method to mitigate voltage boosting and harmonic distortion effects. The method takes into account load impedance effects. Controls are also developed to enable transition between the multiobjective PWM method and conventional PWM as the current source inverter operates in discontinuous and continuous modes of operation. Two new configurations of static ground power unit based on 5L active neutral point clamped (ANPC) and novel modular 9L-ANPC converter are proposed. First, a new level shifted phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation (LS-PSC-PWM) switching method for the 5L-ANPC converter is defined. By utilizing the proposed method, total harmonic distortion of output voltage is reduced in comparison with traditional PSC-PWM switching method. Then, a novel modular 9L-ANPC multilevel converter and its suggested modulation method is proposed in this paper. In comparison with traditional 9L-ANPC converter, the main advantages of proposed modular 9L-ANPC converter are halving the applied voltages on flying capacitors (FC), reduced number of FCs, and self-balancing of FCs, which is provided by suggested switching method. This results in reduction of the size and cost of converter, and makes it more feasible and reliable. Furthermore, inductance reduction of output LC filter enhances static ground power unit dynamic performances. A multilevel boost power factor correction (PFC) rectifier is presented in this paper controlled by cascaded controller and multicarrier pulse width modulation technique. The presented topology has less active semiconductor switches compared to similar ones reducing the number of required gate drives that would shrink the manufactured box significantly. A simple controller has been implemented on the studied converter to generate a constant voltage at the output while generating a five-level voltage waveform at the input without connecting the load to the neutral point of the dc bus capacitors. Multicarrier pulse-width modulation technique has been used to produce switching pulses from control signal at a fixed switching frequency. Multilevel voltage waveform harmonics has been analyzed comprehensively which affects the harmonic contents of input current and the size of required filters directly. Full experimental results confirm the good dynamic performance of the proposed five-level PFC boost rectifier in delivering power from ac grid to the dc loads while correcting the power factor at the ac side as well as reducing the current harmonics remarkably. Current sharing controller/functionality is commonly utilized for multiphase converters to achieve current balancing between converter phases. Conventional current sharing control schemes generally require sensing the current of each phase, leading to increased size and cost in addition to issues associated with current sensing inaccuracies. A sensorless current sharing control scheme is proposed in this paper that utilizes the difference between the input capacitor voltage ripple values to indicate the phases' current distribution status. The duty-cycle value of each phase is autotuned in a way to minimize the difference between the input capacitor voltage ripple values based on a single voltage sensing point, which results in equal current sharing with no need for current sensing. In addition, the input capacitor voltage ripple sensing does not need to be very accurate, and the sinusoidal frequency component of interest of the ripple is obtained by using a low-cost bandpass filter for improved ripple sensing resolution and noise immunity. This paper proposes an isolated universal-link ac–ac power converter suitable for grid connection. The proposed power converter can have multiple ports to connect various loads or electric energy sources, and the configuration can be arranged according to the situation. The proposed power converter does not need to employ the large interface inductor at input side and the huge electrolytic capacitor at dc link. Moreover, it utilizes high-frequency transformers for the galvanic isolation instead of bulky line-frequency transformers. These characteristics of the proposed power converter result in the reduction of the system volume and weight remarkably. The proposed power converter is the modular structure, and an H-bridge works as a basic module of the converter. By stacking the modules, the power converter can be adapted to the high-voltage grid and the various types of loads and/or sources. This paper addresses the structure of the proposed power converter and the fundamental principle of power flow. This paper presents the experimental results of the independent drive characteristics of two three-phase induction motors (IMs) fed by a four-leg inverter (FLI). The FLI is a single inverter that can drive two three-phase ac motors independently. The inverter consists of four legs and two capacitors connected in a series. The U and V phases of both motors are connected in each leg, respectively, whereas the W phase of both motors is connected in the neutral point of two-sprit capacitors. The pulsewidth modulation technique in three-phase voltage source inverter is not directly applicable for the FLI because only two phases must be modulated. Then, this paper also analyzes about the neutral point potential of two-sprit capacitors and inverter output voltage. Next, the modulation technique in the FLI is also shown. This paper presents the design and experimental results of a Thomson coil-based fast mechanical switch for hybrid ac and dc circuit breakers rated at 30-kV voltage and 630-A current. The compact design with optimized circuit parameters and geometric dimensions of components targets 2-mm travel within 1 ms when driven by a 2-mF capacitor bank precharged to 500 V. The use and design of a disc spring as the damping and holding mechanism is presented. Structural design of a complete switch assembly rather than just the actuator is given. Experimental results show that the switch can travel 1.3 mm in the first 1 ms and 3.1 mm in the first 2 ms when driven by a 360-V 2-mF capacitor bank. Such fast mechanical switches facilitate hybrid circuit breaker interruptions within 2 or 3 ms for ultra-fast and highly efficient protections in 5–35 kV medium-voltage dc as well as ac systems. The fault-tolerant multilevel converters are gaining increased interests for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) applications due to their ability to suppress the fault current during dc-side faults. However, most of these topologies use full-bridge submodules (FBSMs) resulting in the requirement of a large number of semiconductor switches. In this paper, a new generalized cross-connected SM (GX-SM) structure is presented, which requires lesser number of switching devices and provides the same functionality as the FBSM. A comparison of the switches required in the different converter topologies using FBSMs and GX-SMs is performed. The performance evaluation of two of the dc-side fault-tolerant converter topologies, namely alternate arm modular multilevel converter (AAMMC) and hybrid cascaded modular multilevel converter (HCMC) with the GX-SM, is performed using simulation studies done in PSCAD/EMTDC. The modulation and control schemes for these GX-SMs-based converters are presented. A new mixed-SM configuration of AAMMC is proposed which utilizes an optimal combination of GX-SMs and half-bridge SMs. The study results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed GX-SM structure, and satisfactory responses of the GX-SMs-based AAMMC and HCMC systems controlled using the presented modulation and control strategies under various system conditions. In this paper, a novel multilevel dc–ac inverter is proposed. The proposed multilevel inverter generates seven-level ac output voltage with the appropriate gate signals’ design. Also, the low-pass filter is used to reduce the total harmonic distortion of the sinusoidal output voltage. The switching losses and the voltage stress of power devices can be reduced in the proposed multilevel inverter. The operating principles of the proposed inverter and the voltage balancing method of input capacitors are discussed. Finally, a laboratory prototype multilevel inverter with 400-V input voltage and output 220\ \textV\text{rms}/2\,{\text{kW}} is implemented. The multilevel inverter is controlled with sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) by TMS320LF2407 digital signal processor (DSP). This paper proposes a simple, cost-effective, and efficient brushless dc (BLDC) motor drive for solar photovoltaic (SPV) array-fed water pumping system. A zeta converter is utilized to extract the maximum available power from the SPV array. The proposed control algorithm eliminates phase current sensors and adapts a fundamental frequency switching of the voltage source inverter (VSI), thus avoiding the power losses due to high frequency switching. No additional control or circuitry is used for speed control of the BLDC motor. The speed is controlled through a variable dc link voltage of VSI. An appropriate control of zeta converter through the incremental conductance maximum power point tracking (INC-MPPT) algorithm offers soft starting of the BLDC motor. The proposed water pumping system is designed and modeled such that the performance is not affected under dynamic conditions. This paper proposes a current-fed non-isolated soft-switching bidirectional dc/dc converter for interfacing energy storage to dc microgrid. The proposed converter employs a current-fed half-bridge boost converter at front-end followed by an LCL resonant circuit to aid in soft-switching of semiconductor devices. A voltage doubler at output is selected to enhance the gain by $2 \times $. The LCL resonant circuit also adds a suitable voltage gain. Therefore, the topology offers overall high voltage gain without transformer or large number of multiplier circuits. For buck operation, high side voltage is first divided by half with capacitor divider to gain higher stepdown ratio. Converter operates at high switching frequency to realize merits of reduced magnetics and filters. Zero voltage turn-on is achieved for all switches and zero current turn-on and turn-off is achieved for all diodes for both buck/boost operation. Voltage across switches and diode is clamped naturally without any external snubber circuit. Detailed analysis and design have been proposed. A proof-of-concept experimental prototype rated at 350 W has been designed, developed, and tested in the laboratory to demonstrate the performance and validate the claims of the converter for wide load variation. In this paper, two modulation strategies called Mod-1 and Mod-2 are compared for a three-level diode neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM) drive. These modulation strategies do not operate at a fixed switching frequency. A new modulation strategy which operates at a fixed switching frequency is proposed called Mod-3. The SynRM suffers from a poor power factor which makes it harder to archive capacitor voltage balancing for a three-level NPC inverter. These modulation strategies are of the nearest three vector (NTV) family. Mod-1 and Mod-3 choose certain vector states to achieve capacitor voltage balancing, whereas Mod-2 strategy makes use of the inverter vector state’s dwell time. The parameters of interest are the torque ripple, the neutral point (NP) voltage ripple, the inverter efficiency, and the $d$-axis current ripple. Though lower torque ripple and better power quality are registered on Mod-2 strategy. Mod-1 strategy has 14% improvement in inverter efficiency at lower modulation index ($m_i = 0.4$). Mod-2 strategy has 11% more NP voltage ripple at a modulation index of 0.4. One of the disadvantages of Mod-1 strategy is the varying switching frequency. Mod-3 scheme produced higher inverter efficiency, better balancing of the capacitor voltages, and guaranteed fixed inverter switching frequency. The disadvantage with Mod-3 strategy is that it generated higher torque ripple, $d$-axis current ripple, and current total harmonic distortion when compared to Mod-1 and Mod-2 at the same load conditions. In this paper, a bidirectional, nonisolated dc–dc converter with several interleaved phases of multilevel modules for dual low-voltage automotive power systems is presented. Instead of using a two-level stage with short-circuit protection elements, a three-level module in a multiphase structure is proposed to achieve improved fault-tolerance. The dimensioning of the required flying capacitor for multilevel dc–dc converters is described. Further, benefits such as ripple reduction, automatic fault current limitation, and enhanced efficiency are achieved. Moreover, the control strategy for normal operation including the stability of the flying capacitor voltage as well as reconfiguration after semiconductor open- and short-circuit failure for ongoing degraded operation are explained. This paper proposes three dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) topologies. Such configurations are able to compensate voltage sags/swells in three-phase four-wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. The proposed systems use two independent dc links. Proposed configurations present advantages in terms of switch blocking voltages and consequently lower dc-link voltage rating. The complete control system, including the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique, is developed, and comparisons between the proposed configurations and a conventional one are performed. This paper proposes a new vector-based dead-time compensation method for three-level T-type converters. The origins and effects of the dead-time voltage errors are analyzed in detail for different switching commutations and load conditions. In order to eliminate the dead-time distortion in each phase, a dead-time error voltage vector is introduced to adjust the reference voltage vector depending on load current polarity. The proposed vector-based dead-time compensation scheme has several advantages. First, it can be applied to multilevel converters with any number of voltage levels using any modulation schemes. Second, the pulse loss issue which is common in conventional pulse-based compensation strategies can be eliminated. In addition, the pulse saturation can be mitigated by operating the converters in overmodulation regions. A non-isolated impulse commutated current-fed voltage doubler based non-isolated inverter for a solar photovoltaic, battery or fuel cell application is proposed in this paper. Impulse commutation enables device voltage clamping with zero current commutation of the semiconductor devices. It eliminates the traditional problem of turn-off voltage spike across the devices in current-fed converters. Unlike resonant converters, resonance pulse appears for a very short interval leading to zero current turn-off of devices. It therefore, limits peak and circulating currents through the components. Voltage doubler is selected to achieve 2 $\times$ gain. Variable frequency modulation ensures output voltage regulation with input and load variations. Steady-state operation and analysis of front-end converter is explained. Smart grid technologies are expected to increase system efficiency and reliability using advancement in automation, communication, computation, and optimization. Several control algorithms have been developed or enhanced for operation and control of smart distribution grid. In recent years, volt/var control (VVC) algorithms have been proposed for energy saving in distribution systems due to advancement provided by smart grid automation and control. VVC helps to lower distribution feeder voltage to decrease energy consumption. However, quantification of this impact is hard due to several external factors such as weather and end users' behavior. On the other hand, existing evaluation methods of VVC algorithms are either not suitable for long-term study or intrusive. This paper addresses these issues by proposing a new technique to estimate “distribution system demand without smart grid implementation” utilizing “data measured from system with smart grid implementation.” Interdependence of voltage and load is considered based on estimated load characteristic. Our key contribution is developing a method for quantifying the real-time energy saving of smart grid automation and control focused on VVC and implementing in an electric utility in eastern Washington, USA. Brushless dc motor drive system employing minimized dc-link capacitor is becoming popular for the reason of compactness and long lifetime. However, once the capacitance is reduced, reversal dc-link current will lead to excessive voltage rise in the dc link when conventional current limit strategy is used. In order to avoid the damage caused by oversize pumping-up voltage, a novel current limit strategy without reversal dc-link current is necessary. In this paper, the traditional all-turn-off current limit logic is replaced by half-turn-off logic. Then, an improved current sampling scheme is presented to replace the cycle-by-cycle mode, which induces failure of current limiting after the elimination of reversal current. Diode rectifier front-ends with large dc bus capacitors used in variable-frequency drives draw discontinuous current from the power system, resulting in a poor input power factor and high input current distortion. The 12-pulse and 18-pulse techniques used to reduce input current harmonics are popular because of their simplicity but are bulky and expensive. Autotransformer techniques require additional external magnetic components that are bulky and add to the cost of the system. A new electronically isolated 12-pulse autotransformer topology that does not need bulky external magnetic components is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology employs active switches to achieve electronic isolation between the two rectifiers, resulting in continuous input current with reduced harmonics. The proposed nonregenerative active scheme achieves less than 5% total harmonic distortion at a much lower cost compared with other passive or active topologies currently in the market. This paper presents the performance analysis and comparison of two types of bidirectional dc–dc converters—cascaded buck–boost capacitor in the middle and cascaded buck–boost inductor in the middle for use in plug-in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The comparison of the two converters is based on device requirements, rating of switches and components, control strategy, and performance. Each of the converter topologies has some advantages over the other in certain aspects. Efficiency analysis has been carried out for specific scenarios in vehicle applications. This paper proposes a new isolated three-port bidirectional dc–dc converter for simultaneous power management of multiple energy sources. The proposed converter has the advantage of using the least number of switches and soft switching for the main switch, which is realized by using an inductor–capacitor–inductor ( $LCL$) -resonant circuit. The converter is capable of interfacing sources of different voltage–current characteristics with a load and/or a dc microgrid. The proposed converter is constructed for simultaneous power management of a photovoltaic (PV) panel, a rechargeable battery, and a load. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed converter is capable of maximum power point tracking control for the PV panel, when there is solar radiation, and controlling the charge and discharge of the battery, when there is surplus energy and power deficiency with respect to the load, respectively. Utility company standards for power quality are making it difficult for industrial users to start large induction and synchronous motors due to high inrush current. This paper will present a large oil company's challenges in starting large motors driven by the utility company in a relatively weak power system in East Texas while not violating the utility company's standards. A workable solution is an air-cooled pulsewidth-modulated voltage source variable-frequency drive system designed to start multiple large-horsepower medium-voltage synchronous motors without any measurable voltage flicker. Various combinations of motor design (induction versus synchronous) and starting methods are reviewed, and final design schematic diagrams are documented. A single-stage offline power supply for LED lighting applications, based on the integration of a buck power factor corrector (PFC) and a tapped buck dc/dc converter, is presented in this paper. In addition to the high step-down capability and the output current regulation, the proposed topology effectively provides PFC to comply with the harmonic injection and energy-saving standards EN 61000-3-2 and Energy Star. The low bus voltage level, resulting from the use of an input step-down PFC stage, actually allows the use of film technology capacitors, instead of short lifetime electrolytic capacitors, to filter the bus voltage and reduce the LED current ripple component at twice the line frequency. Due to the high reliability, the simple structure, the good line-side spectral performance, and the low component count, the proposed topology effectively results to be very suitable for medium-power solid-state lighting applications, as in the case of LED downlighting. This paper proposes a novel modulation technique and a new balancing control strategy for a single-phase five-level flying-capacitor (FC)-based active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter. The proposed modulator can control the FC voltage to follow the requested reference value and simultaneously generate the required ac output voltage regardless of the values of the dc capacitor voltages of the converter. By implementing this method, smaller values of the dc-link capacitor and FC can be used even in applications that could experience ripple or transient in the capacitor voltage. In a single-phase five-level ANPC converter applications, where the capacitors can experience pulsation power and dc-link balancing issues, such as grid-connected photovoltaic system, the selection of the reference voltage value for the FC can play an important role to balance the average values of the dc-link capacitor voltage. The proposed new control strategy uses a new reference voltage for the FC to be applied by the new modulator to have an average balanced dc-link voltages as well as an ac output voltage with good power quality. Simulation studies and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modulation technique and control strategy even with relatively small dc capacitors to produce high-quality output voltage and current waveforms while maintaining an average balanced dc-link voltages. This paper presents a power factor correction (PFC)-based bridgeless Luo (BL-Luo) converter-fed brushless dc (BLDC) motor drive. A single voltage sensor is used for the speed control of the BLDC motor and PFC at ac mains. The voltage follower control is used for a BL-Luo converter operating in discontinuous inductor current mode. The speed of the BLDC motor is controlled by an approach of variable dc-link voltage, which allows a low-frequency switching of the voltage source inverter for the electronic commutation of the BLDC motor, thus offering reduced switching losses. The proposed BLDC motor drive is designed to operate over a wide range of speed control with an improved power quality at ac mains. The power quality indices thus obtained are under the recommended limits of IEC 61000-3-2. Various kinds of differential power processing converters and voltage equalizers have been proposed for series-connected photovoltaic (PV) modules to prevent negative influences of partial shading, such as significant reduction in power generation and the occurrence of multiple maximum power points (MPPs), including local and global MPPs, that hinders and confuses MPP tracking algorithms to operate properly. However, since conventional topologies are based on multiple individual dc–dc converters, the required switch count increases proportionally to the number of modules connected in series, increasing the complexity. A two-switch voltage equalizer using an LLC resonant inverter and voltage multiplier is proposed in this paper. The circuitry can be dramatically simplified compared with conventional topologies due to the two-switch configuration. Detailed operation analyses for the LLC resonant inverter and voltage multiplier are separately performed. Experimental equalization tests emulating partially shaded conditions were performed for four PV modules connected in series. With the proposed voltage equalizer, local MPPs successfully disappeared, and extractable maximum power increased compared with those without equalization, demonstrating the effectiveness and performance of the proposed voltage equalizer. This paper deals with the design, analysis, simulation, and development of a power-factor-correction (PFC) multiple-output switched-mode power supply (SMPS) using a bridgeless buck–boost converter at the front end. Single-phase ac supply is fed to a pair of back-to-back-connected buck–boost converters to eliminate the diode bridge rectifier, which results in reduction of conduction losses and power quality improvement at the front end. The operation of the bridgeless buck–boost converter in discontinuous conduction mode ensures inherent PFC operation and reduces complexity in control. The performance of the proposed multiple-output SMPS is evaluated under varying input voltages and loads by simulating this circuit in MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the results obtained through simulation are validated experimentally on a developed prototype. This paper proposes an offline single-stage light-emitting diode (LED) driver based on a novel approach to reduce low-frequency ripple in LED arrays supplied from mains, while assuring high input power factor (PF). The proposal employs a series resonant dc–dc converter integrated into a bridgeless boost power factor correction (PFC) stage. The resonant stage works to reduce the low-frequency ripple transmitted from the output of the PFC stage to the LEDs with only small power losses. This solution achieves three main goals: 1) reduction of the bulk capacitance used at the dc bus, allowing for the use of long-life film capacitors; 2) increase in the overall efficiency of the LED driver owing to the low switching and conduction losses in the shared switching network; and 3) assuring high input PF. Experimental results of a driver without electrolytic capacitors for a 100-W street lighting LED luminaire are presented, showing overall efficiency in excess of 92%, input PF greater than 0.97, and line current harmonic content in compliance with the IEC 61000-3-2 standard. This paper presents a dual-purpose offline LED driver with illumination control and visible light communications (VLC). LEDs, due to their nonlinear $I$– $V$ characteristics, are driven by constant current sources. The proposed dual-purpose offline LED driver realizes a constant current source by a buck converter without a capacitor using average current mode control. VLC is implemented through variable pulse position modulation scheme using a shunt switch in parallel to LED string. Conventional LED drivers are typically designed to perform illumination control with pulsewidth modulation (PWM) dimming at low frequencies ( $<$ 20 kHz), which results in audible noise due to the mechanical vibrations of inductors and piezoelectric properties of ceramic capacitors. The proposed converter presents an illumination control with PWM dimming frequencies above the audible range. The detailed control and modeling of the proposed dual-purpose LED driver using high-frequency model of LED string is discussed. The effects of the phosphor on phosphor-based white LEDs for VLC are reported. The proposed driver is experimentally evaluated on 110/120 ac mains with 450-lm output. In this paper, a passive ripple canceling circuit (PRCC) is proposed to eliminate the output power reduction effect of photovoltaic (PV) systems caused by the current ripple of the PV converters. Special features of the proposed PRCC include having low-cost simple modular structure and being independent of the duty ratio control of the main power circuit. Hence, it can be easily integrated to the main power circuit to achieve zero input current ripple, yielding less filter size, loss, and fast response. Meanwhile, the linear line maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is also integrated with the proposed module integrated converter (MIC) to achieve instantaneous tracking response. Finally, a 90-W laboratory prototype is constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed principle. It is seen that the resulting peak-to-peak input current ripple is reduced to about 2% of the original dc converter input ripple. In other words, the input current ripple is almost zero. This paper proposes a novel single-stage electronic ballast with high power factor (HPF) for supplying fluorescent lamps. The presented electronic ballast integrates a dual boost converter with coupled inductors and a half-bridge series-resonant parallel-loaded inverter into a single-stage power conversion topology. The features of the ballast are cost-effectiveness, HPF (\PF > 0.98), high circuit efficiency ( $ > $90%), low input current total harmonic distortion (\THD < 7\%), low level of crest factor (\CF < 1.4), and zero-voltage switching obtained on both two power switches. Operational principles, design equations, and experimental results of one T5-type fluorescent lamp with a rated power of 21 W operating at 50 kHz switching frequency with 110 V-RMS line input voltage are presented. Natural balancing of the cell voltages is observed in many multilevel converters, however, this was not previously described for the modular multilevel converter (MMC). This paper introduces a method whereby the self-balancing behavior of the MMC can be described and analyzed. A novel equivalent circuit of the two cell single phase MMC is introduced whereby the unbalance in the system is clearly stated. Using this equivalent circuit a method, using the frequency domain as basis for analysis, is proposed whereby the self-balancing properties of the converter can be described. This paper presents a new nonisolated buck/boost-type multilevel dc–dc converter suitable for high-power and medium/high-voltage application. The main features of the proposed topology are as follows: low voltage across the semiconductors, low switching losses, and reduced volume of the output filter. The theoretical analysis is carried out for a five-level bidirectional structure of the proposed converter, operating in Buck mode. The proposed topology presents some capacitors, and their voltage must be balanced for proper operation of the converter. Thus, a capacitor voltage balancing active control using a feedforward technique is proposed and analyzed in detail. In order to validate the theoretical analysis, a prototype with 10 kW output power capability, 1.3 kV to 800 V input-to-output voltage, and 20 kHz of switching frequency was built and experimented. This paper proposes a switched capacitor-based converter to drive high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In contrast to conventional constant current dc drivers, the current pulse is provided by a switched capacitor. The proposed approach differs from the traditional switched-capacitor-based one, because it uses a small inductor to improve the switching behavior of the converter. Based on the charge control analysis, the effects of switching devices on the proposed converter are evidenced and evaluated. In this paper, a new bridgeless single-phase ac–dc power factor correction (PFC) rectifier based on buck topology operating in discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM) is proposed. The bridgeless topology and the presence of only one or two semiconductor switches in the current flowing path during each interval of the switching cycle result in lower conduction losses compared with the conventional DCVM buck PFC rectifier. The DCVM operation offers additional advantages such as zero-voltage turn-off in the power switches, zero-voltage turn-on in the output diode, and continuous input current. Hence, the electromagnetic interference noise emission is minimized. The converter achieves high power factor naturally with low total harmonic distortion in the input current. Theoretical analysis and experimental results for 100 W/48 \Vdc at 100 \Vrms line voltage are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. The fault ride-through capability of distributed generation systems is an important factor for the stability of the grid. Particularly for medium-voltage converters with low switching frequency, this requirement is difficult to fulfill. In case of sudden voltage dips, the dynamics of a common grid control is normally too slow to prevent unacceptable converter current transients, which can cause destruction of power semiconductors. To avoid this, a predictive control strategy is presented in this paper. For the steady state and in case of reference value changes, a common $dq$-oriented control of the positive and negative sequence is used. Only in case of serious grid faults, the proposed predictive control strategy will take over the calculation of the switching states for a few milliseconds. This paper presents a hybrid switch that parallels a power MOSFET and an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) as the main switch of a zero-voltage switching (ZVS) inverter. The combination features the MOSFET conducting in the low-current region and the IGBT conducting in the high-current region, and the soft switching avoids the reverse recovery problem during the device turn-on. A custom hybrid switch module has been developed for a variable-timing-controlled coupled-magnetic-type ZVS inverter with a nominal input voltage of 325 V and the continuous output power of 30 kW for a traction motor drive. Experimental results of the hybrid-switch-based inverter with the total loss projected by temperature indicate that the inverter achieves 99% efficiency at the nominal condition and demonstrate ultrahigh-efficiency operation over a wide load range. There are several ways to model three-phase gridconnected voltage-source inverters (VSIs) with an $LCL$ filter. Such models often use simplifications like constant dc-link voltage or averaging over a switching period. These simplifications remove transistor switching and dc-link capacitor dynamics from the model. In this paper, a comprehensive modeling of a three-phase VSI, including an $LCL$ filter, is described and compared to models using one or more of the aforementioned simplifications. Fault-tolerant permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) drives for wind turbine applications play a major role in improving reliability and availability levels, since power converters are very prone to fail. In this paper, a fault-tolerant converter with the ability to handle power switch open-circuit faults is addressed. The main concern of the proposed converter topology is the minimization of the hardware requirements, leading to a low increase of the system cost. First, the employed fault diagnostic technique does not require additional measurements, nor high computational effort. Secondly, the circuit topology reconfiguration implies a minimum number of extra components as well as minimal oversizing of the standard ones. Accordingly, a four-switch three-phase converter with the dc bus midpoint connected to the transformer neutral point and a three-switch three-phase rectifier are adopted for post-fault operation of the grid- and PMSG-side converters, respectively. Vector control strategies are proposed for both converters under analysis, focusing the issues of capacitor voltages balancing and torque ripple minimization. The three-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) topology is widely employed in rectifiers, active power filters, and electric machine drives. This paper proposes an alternative control strategy for the NPC topology based on the one-cycle control technique and the hybrid pulsewidth modulation strategy. Optimal unbalanced load compensation is achieved with the proposed scheme, of which the principal advantages are simplicity, robustness, and low cost. The acceptability of pulsed electric field (PEF) processing as an alternative method for liquid food preservation requires the elimination, or at least the reduction, of all the effects accompanying the flow of electric current. Metallic particles might be released from the electrode material as a result of electrically driven electrochemical reactions. The presence of such metallic particles can affect the quality and the safety of PEF-processed food. This paper investigates the effect of varying the parameters of applied electric pulses on the amount of released metals, aiming to reach the optimum conditions. This paper develops a novel single-switch resonant power converter for renewable energy generation applications. This circuit topology integrates a novel single-switch resonant inverter with zero-voltage switching (ZVS) with an energy-blocking diode with zero-current switching (ZCS). The energy-blocking diode with a direct-current output filter filters the output stage of the novel single-switch resonant inverter. Only one active power switch is used for power energy conversion to reduce the cost of active power switches and control circuits. The active power switch is controlled by pulsewidth modulation at a fixed switching frequency and a constant duty cycle. When the resonant converter is operated at discontinuous conduction mode, the inductor current through the resonant tank could achieve ZCS of the energy-blocking diode. Accordingly, a high energy conversion efficiency is ensured. Operating principles are derived, and analyses are carried out based on the equivalent circuits for the proposed power converter under different operating modes. The operating principles of the converter were verified using a 32.4-W 70-kHz experimental photovoltaic-powered load system. Given appropriately chosen circuit parameters, the active power switch can be operated with ZVS, and a measured energy conversion efficiency of the proposed topology of 97.3% can be achieved. Experimental results demonstrate a satisfactory performance of the proposed topology, which is particularly suited to the energy conversion applications in renewable energy generation systems. This paper presents single- to three-phase dc-link converters with a reduced number of controlled switches for either usual or reduced currents in switches of the rectifier. A suitable model and a control strategy, including a synchronization approach, are developed to obtain the maximum dc-link voltage utilization. Such a synchronization method, associated with the pulse-width-modulated generation signal, forces the input current to have the same phase angle as the input voltage. The main advantage of the proposed converters along with the synchronization method is the reduction of the zero-crossing distortion normally caused by the use of diodes. This paper presents a novel topology for a nonisolated bidirectional dc–dc converter with soft-switching capabilities, which usually operates at a zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) condition. A nonisolated dc–dc converter combines a buck converter and a backward boost converter into one circuit, which consists of a half-bridge power switch, an inductor, and capacitors. In order to realize ZVS conditions, the proposed converter utilizes a coupled inductor, a small independent inductor, and auxiliary switches and diodes. Due to ZVS, switching stress on switch components is reduced, and the reverse recovery problem of MOSFET antiparallel body diodes is also eliminated. Moreover, the operating modes of the proposed converter can be switched between a ZVS mode and a conventional hard-switching mode on the basis of load conditions. The soft-switching mode is for heavy loads, and the hard-switching mode is for light-load conditions. Therefore, the highest efficiency can be obtained at almost all load ranges. In this paper, a novel control strategy is presented, which is capable of controlling a 12-V–1.5-V main buck converter and an auxiliary circuit to achieve significantly improved unloading response performance. While the charge balance controller minimizes the settling time of the main buck converter, the auxiliary circuit is controlled in boundary conduction mode (BCM) for a predictable pattern of auxiliary switching to reduce the output overshoot. Therefore, the reliability and dynamic performance of the entire system is significantly enhanced. Compared with existing technologies, the proposed BCM auxiliary switching strategy achieves improved output voltage overshoot and reduced auxiliary power losses at the same time. Furthermore, numerical analysis of the improved output voltage overshoot and reduced auxiliary power losses has been conducted for a design guideline. In this paper, an average switch model approach to the power stage modeling, feedback compensation network design, and dynamic analysis of power factor correction (PFC) boost converters with ripple steering is presented. The model is expressed by the derivation of power stage transfer functions for a conventional boost converter and then followed by the derivation of the power stage transfer functions for a boost converter with ripple steering. A detailed design procedure and comparison of both voltage and current feedback loops are given in a conventional PFC boost converter and boost converter with ripple steering. Experimental and simulation results of a prototype boost converter converting universal ac input voltage to 400 V dc at 1.6 kW are given to verify the proof of concept and analytical work reported. The five-level active neutral-point-clamped converter is a recently introduced topology that offers low harmonic distortion and a high output voltage. In addition to a neutral point potential in the dc link, this topology features, in each phase, a flying phase capacitor. Balancing these four internal converter voltages around their references while providing fast torque and/or current control for the machine is an intrinsically challenging control problem. Model predictive direct torque control (DTC) (MPDTC) is an ideal control methodology to address this problem. It is shown, in this paper, how MPDTC, originally developed for three-level inverters, can be adapted to this new five-level topology. Compared to DTC, the performance results of MPDTC are very promising—for the same switching frequency, the harmonic distortions of the stator currents and the torque can be more than halved. In this paper, several modular converter topologies based on a switched-capacitor-cell concept are introduced for high-power applications. Two types of switched-capacitor cells, including the full cell and the half-cell, are discussed. The full cell can be used for dc–ac inversion, and the half-cell is utilized in both dc–dc and dc–ac applications. A rotational charging scheme is adopted for the half-cell-based dc–dc voltage multiplier to eliminate the large output capacitor that exists in many traditional switched-capacitor topologies. A soft-switching scheme, which does not require extra components, is adopted to reduce the switching loss and electromagnetic interference. A variable switching frequency control scheme is proposed to realize soft switching for dc–ac inverters. The experimental results on a 2-kW prototype are presented to verify the proposed topologies. This paper proposes a bidirectional switched-capacitor dc–dc converter for applications that require high voltage gain. Some of conventional switched-capacitor dc–dc converters have diverse voltage or current stresses for the switching devices in the circuit, not suitable for modular configuration or for high efficiency demand; some suffer from relatively high power loss or large device count for high voltage gain, even if the device voltage stress could be low. By contrast, the proposed dc–dc converter features low component (switching device and capacitor) power rating, small switching device count, and low output capacitance requirement. In addition to its low current stress, the combination of two short symmetric paths of charge pumps further lowers power loss. Therefore, a small and light converter with high voltage gain and high efficiency can be achieved.
